hollywood offspring collage melia

Children of celebrities often inherit something more valuable than, well, their inheritance.

Talent? Diana Ross' son sings like an angel.

Personality? Robin Williams' daughter got his clownish sense of humor.

Looks? Here's a slideshow of the blessed Baldwin women to prove it.

Of course, there are exceptions. Jack Nicholson's daughter turned out exponentially better-looking. Tom Hanks' middle son raps. Not well.

We rounded up the 25 hottest celebrity offspring, 18 and older, who are making waves in entertainment.

Prepare to ogle.

25. Sasha Spielberg

Age: 23

Celeb Parent: Steven Spielberg

What She's Up To: Sasha stepped out of her father's shadow hand-in-hand with adopted brother Theo, creating the soulful alternative-rock band Wardell.

The keyboard and ukulele player lulls listeners into a folksy summer anthem in the debut track, "Opossum."

Last year, the Brown University graduate caught Nicole Richie's eye at a concert and became the face of her bohemian-chic fashion lines, Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960.

24. Indio Johnson

Age: 18

Celeb Parent: Robert Downey, Jr.

What He's Up To: The "Iron Man" actor's son shreds on guitar and vox in his band, The Seems.

The trio's debut single, "Buysexual," features a bluesy garage sound and edgy, lovestruck lyrics.

The LA-based rocker, brooding like his father and now sporting platinum blonde locks, says he strives to find the sentimental in a world of excess.

23. Billie Lourd

Age: 20

Celeb Parent: Carrie Fisher

What She's Up To: Princess Leia's little princess dreamed of being a comic.

"You have plenty of material," Fisher told her daughter, a New York University student, according to an interview with The Daily Mail. "Your father's gay, your mother is a drug addict and manic depressive, your grandmother tap-dances for a living and your grandfather took speed."

Billie's extra-curriculars include volunteering for the Obama for America campaign in 2008 and interning with HBO Documentary Films.

unruly media office tour

Unruly Media is a social media-focused company that has cracked the code of what makes videos go viral.

Unruly has tracked 329 billion video views, worked with more than 400 brands (including Coca-Cola, Volkswagen, Microsoft, and T-Mobile) on their viral content, and tracked viewers' video reactions in its Social Media Lab in London for years.

Now Unruly is bringing that technology to the United States.

We took a tour of Unruly's cool New York office, which opened the doors of its Social Video Lab Tuesday, and were impressed with the digs.

Unruly's office swaps cups for beakers, incorporates popular memes into its decor, has a Vine production suite, and even has a facial recognition station to gauge how viewers are reacting to videos.

Unruly's office is located in New York's Flat Iron district. While the exterior isn't impressive ...

... the fourth floor of the building is a cozy space entirely dedicated to all things viral. The waiting area is even decorated with YouTube and Facebook pillows.

Unruly measures the most sharable branded videos on the web, helping companies fine tune their creative content. So its hardly surprising that employees take meetings in Psy-themed conference rooms.

The Most Gag-Worthy Quotes From Kanye West's New York Times Interview

$

0

Kanye WestKanye West gave a ridiculous, gag-worthy, self-important new interview to Jon Caramanica of The New York Times.

In the article titled "Behind Kanye's Mask," Caramanica talks to the rapper about his new album "Yeezus" out Tuesday, his place in the music industry, impending fatherhood and "Keeping up with the Kardashians."

The interview spanned several hours over three days and resulted in a lengthy, revealing piece inside the unique mind of Kanye West.

So you don't have to read through the entire 5-page article, we've pulled out the 20 most ridiculous Kanye quotes (yes, there were that many legitimate ones) that everyone will be talking about today:

  1. "If anyone’s reading this waiting for some type of full-on, flat apology for anything, they should just stop reading right now."
  2. “I was on the junior team when I was a freshman, that’s how good I was. But I wasn’t on my eighth-grade team, because some coach — some Grammy, some reviewer, some fashion person, some blah blah blah — they’re all the same as that coach.”
  3. “You know, if Michael Jordan can scream at the refs, me as Kanye West, as the Michael Jordan of music, can go and say, ‘This is wrong.’”
  4. "I don’t know if this is statistically right, but I’m assuming I have the most Grammys of anyone my age, but I haven’t won one against a white person."
  5.  "I am so credible and so influential and so relevant that I will change things."
  6. "I don’t have some type of romantic relationship with the public. I’m like, the anti-celebrity, and my music comes from a place of being anti."
  7. "[I knew]  I was going to be a big star. At the time, they used to have the Virgin music [stores], and I would go there and just go up the escalator and say to myself, 'I’m soaking in these last moments of anonymity.' I knew I was going to make it this far; I knew that this was going to happen."
  8. “I am in the lineage of Gil Scott-Heron, great activist-type artists. But I’m also in the lineage of a Miles Davis — you know, that liked nice things also.”
  9. "I don’t believe that it’s luxury to go into a store and not be able to afford something. I believe luxury is to be able to go into a store and be able to afford something."
  10. On "Keeping up with the Kardashians":  "It’s not that I have an issue with the show; I just have an issue with the amount of backlash that I get. Because I just see like, an amazing person that I’m in love with that I want to help."
  11. "I don’t want to explain too much into what my thoughts on, you know, fatherhood are, because I’ve not fully developed those thoughts yet. I don’t have a kid yet ... Like, this is my baby. This isn’t America’s baby."
  12. On his "Yeezus" album: "This one Corbusier lamp was like, my greatest inspiration ... Like I say, I’m a minimalist in a rapper’s body."
  13. On the moment he called out President Bush at the Hurricane Katrina telethon: "Yeah, it was pretty bugged out. When you think about it, I was wearing like, a Juicy Couture men’s polo shirt. We weren’t there, like, ready for war."
  14. On his outfits from five years ago: "Yeah, kill self. That’s all I have to say. Kill self."
  15. "The idea of Kanye and vanity are like, synonymous. But I’ve put myself in a lot of places where a vain person wouldn’t put themselves in. Like what’s vanity about wearing a kilt?"
  16. "If you don’t make Christmas presents, meaning making something that’s so emotionally connected to people, don’t talk to me."
  17. "Like, I want the world to be better! All I want is positive! All I want is dopeness!"
  18. "Yeah, respect my trendsetting abilities. Once that happens, everyone wins. The world wins; fresh kids win; creatives win; the company wins."
  19. On whether his instinct to fight for what's fair has led him astray, as in the instance he tried to take Taylor Swift's MTV Video Music Award away from her during her acceptance speech: "It’s only led me to complete awesomeness at all times. It’s only led me to awesome truth and awesomeness. Beauty, truth, awesomeness. That’s all it is."
  20. "I will be the leader of a company that ends up being worth billions of dollars, because I got the answers. I understand culture. I am the nucleus."

Paris to Peking Rally 2013 Car 99, a 1950 Bentley MKV1 Special, drives through the sands

On May 28, 96 classic cars left Beijing for an epic race that will take them all the way to Paris.

It's the 5th Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, one of the planet's toughest rally races.

The cars in competition are rarely seen on roads today, and span from a 1913 Ford Model T to a 1982 Renault 4.

They're being driven by teams of two, who hail from 26 countries and are made up of spouses, parents and children, and siblings.

Some are doing it just for fun, while others are raising money for charity (causes include environmental conservation and brain research).

Seven cars were forced to drop out within the first week, but the rest are aiming to reach Paris by June 29.

Standing between them and their goal are 7,500 miles of deserts, mountains, gravel and dirt roads, through China, Mongolia, Russia, Ukraine, Switzerland, France, and more.

On May 28, the cars took off from Beijing, starting the 7,500 mile journey.

Things quickly got muddy.

The 1913 Ford Model T is the oldest entrant in the rally. On day two, its oil cap vibrated loose and ended up breaking a fan blade.

Controversial Artist Damien Hirst Finally Reveals How Many Spot Paintings He's Made

$

damien hirst artControversial artist Damien Hirst has flooded the art market with nearly 1,400 of the same painting.

Well, virtually the same — Hirst's famous multi-colored "spot" paintings have dots ranging from the size of a pin to over five feet across.

But they all have the same industrial uniformity, mainly due to the fact that Hirst has assistants who manufacture the paintings for him.

Hirst has openly admitted that he is only responsible for the first 25 spot paintings, and his assistants have done the rest. But he still told Reuters last year that "every single spot painting contains my eye, my hand, and my heart."

Whether they are the products of assistants or Hirst himself, the artist's name has guaranteed the paintings have sold well at recent auctions — from $53,000 to $1.7 million in the past 18 months, according to The New York Times.

Even so, those numbers are not what they used to be. Hirst's golden boy status in the art world began to tank in 2008 along with the economy, and since then his works of art have resold for 30% less than the original price, according to The Independent.

Perhaps that's why Hirst is now drumming up publicity by revealing exactly how many spot paintings actually exist in a new book by his publisher Other Criteria — 1,365, to be precise.

That number is significantly lower than the rumored 2,000-7,000 paintings in the series, which may increase future auction prices, but it's still a lot.

And despite the market saturation, Hirst is in the process of creating even more spot paintings:

"Damien is working on some spot paintings with very small spots, including a painting with one million spots, which will take number of years to complete," James Kelly, director of Hirst's London company Science Ltd, told The New York Times in an email.

Of course he is.

Dotcom Distribution, an e-commerce logistics and fulfillment company, looked at the 11 biggest flash sale sites— such as Gilt, Fab, RueLaLa, etc. — and ranked them by customer complaints on Facebook.

The company found nearly half of Facebook comments about these brands was negative, and of those the biggest complaint was shipping.

The good news: Fab.com had the lowest percentage of negative customer comments.

The bad: 61% of Zuliliy's Facebook comments were complaints about the company.

Here's a detailed breakdown of who's winning and who's losing the flash sales battle on Facebook. (It's also worth bearing mind that some of these brands are clients of Dotcom, and some are not.)

The problem for flash sale sites on Facebook is that the companies need the referral traffic that Facebook generates, but customer complaints can be very public.

Shipping is the biggest issue.

Fab.com has the lowest rate of complaints about shipping. Zulilly, HauteLook and Beyond the Rack have the highest rate of complaints.

1. United States

As a Marine Corps veteran, I would like to point out that there’s more to military prowess than firepower. There’s no statistic for leadership, no metric for the stuff they pump into you at Parris Island.

But firepower matters ... a lot.

In a world rife with global conflicts, the ability to project power and wield that power decisively is an important national security and diplomatic asset.

The folks at Global Firepower have figured out a way to rank who has the most powerful military.

They measure 40 different stats about a country, including number of aircraft characters, available manpower, and labor force, to produce a  “Power Index,” in which lower numbers equal more firepower.

Note: Nuclear capabilities are not included in this calculation — but Russia and the United States far outpace the rest of the world in nuclear armament, with 8,500 and 7,700 nuclear weapons, respectively.

In the first quarter of 2013, 9.7 million or 19.8% of all residential properties with a mortgage were still in negative equity, according to CoreLogic's latest negative equity report.

Homeowners are in negative equity when they owe more on their mortgage than their home is worth.

This is down from 10.5 million or 21.7% of all residential properties at the end of Q4 2012.

Higher home prices helped lift 850,000 mortgage borrowers out of negative equity. But a large part of the country is still deep underwater.

Using CoreLogic data, we ranked the 12 states that had the most underwater mortgages as a percentage of all mortgages. The five states with the highest negative equity accounted for 32.8% of negative equity in the U.S.

Note: Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio is a measure used by financial institutions to gauge risk before approving a mortgage. The higher the LTV ratio, the higher the risk and the more expensive the loan.

Underground Bicycle Parking Systems in Japan

As complaints about the placement of New York's new bike share stations have shown, parking bicycles in an urban setting can be tricky.

A company in Japan has found a novel solution: Put them underground.

On the television show Culture Japan, which airs in Japan, host Danny Choo takes a look at the Eco Cycle bike garages at Tokyo's Shinagawa Station.

Each high-tech garage, built by construction company Giken, can hold 204 bikes in a 38-foot deep well beneath the ground.

As the human, all you have to do is get a membership and roll your bike up to the station. Robots park it underground, and fetch it when you want it back.

It's like valet parking, but with bikes and robots.

Watch the Culture Japan video, or click through to take a look.

To park a bike, find a garage.

Each garage has room for about 200 bikes.

As a member, you get an electronic badge to put on your bike.

9 Famous Whistle-Blowers: Where Are They Now?

$

Daniel Ellsberg

It's one of the big questions concerning Edward Snowden, the self-confessed leaker and National Security Agency whistle-blower: What next? While legal experts debate whether he will be extradited from Hong Kong, where he's hiding out, and how much jail time he could face? AOL Jobs decided to glean some insight into Snowden's fate by looking at past whistle-blowers. What happened to government officials, corporate execs and lowly clerks who went up against the powers-that-be and revealed secrets? (AOL, like other tech companies, said in a statement it does "not have any knowledge of the Prism program" that Snowden revealed in his leak.)

While some went on to have high-paying careers, many others went to jail or were ostracized, forced to live in obscurity. One famous whistle-blower, Bradley Manning, who handed over classified videos, cables and other documents to Wikileaks, is currently standing trial for the charge of aiding the enemy. He faces life in prison.

Indeed, one thing is clear: the life of a whistle-blower is never easy, even though President Obama himself has signed laws that are supposed to protect them. Read on, and then tell us: What do you think should happen to Edward Snowden?

Mark Felt, the Federal Bureau of Investigation

How he blew the whistle:  As the associate director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the early 1970's, Mark Felt was aware of illegal attempts by the Nixon Administration to spy on political opponents, breaking into offices and reading their mail. So when J. Edgar Hoover died in 1972, and Nixon bypassed Felt and appointed another ally as FBI director, Felt became a critical source to Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward, as he and fellow reporter Carl Bernstein investigated the Watergate Hotel break-in and resulting scandal.

What happened: He retired from the FBI in 1973. For years, Felt's identity was kept secret; Woodward and Bernstein only referred to him as "Deep Throat." At his request, his true identity was disclosed in 2005, when he was 91 years old.  He died in 2008.

In 1978, he faced felony charges in connection with FBI surveillance of radical groups like the Weather Underground. He was pardoned by President Ronald Reagan in 1982. During legal proceedings he was the beneficiary of many private donations, including gifts from Nixon himself. Felt wrote several books about his time in the Bureau.

Daniel Ellsberg, U.S. Pentagon

How he blew the whistle: In the early 1970's, military leaders and the White House claimed America was winning the Vietnam War. In private, however, they wrote an encyclopedic history that detailed America's failures. In 1969, young, defense analyst Daniel Ellsberg began photocopying the Department of Defense records, which documented how four presidential administrations misled the American public. It also revealed the secret bombing campaign in Cambodia.  In 1971, Ellsberg handed over the secret war files, known as the "Pentagon Papers," to the New York Times.

What happened:  Ellsberg was charged under the Espionage Act of 1917, but the charges were dropped in 1971. Ellsberg began a career as a political activist.

What he's doing now: As a member of the New York-based Campaign for Peace and Democracy, Ellsberg was an outspoken opponent of the 2003-2011 Iraq War, among other issues. He lives in Kensington, Calif. and has called Edward Snowden a "hero."

Mordechai Vanunu, Israeli Government

How he blew the whistle: As a matter of policy, Israel refuses to acknowledge its nuclear program. But as a nuclear technician for the Israeli government, Vanunu confirmed the program to the Sunday Times of London in 1986, saying he was morally opposed to weapons of destruction. At the time, he said the state had between 100 to 200 nuclear weapons.

What happened: Israeli agents captured him in Italy in 1986, and Vanunu was sentenced to 18 years in Israeli prisons for being a traitor. He spent 11 in solitary confinement. After he was  released in 2004, Vanunu was sent back to jail in 2010 for three months for meeting with foreigners, including his Norwegian girlfriend.

What he's doing now: He is still monitored by the Israeli government, and is reported to be living in East Jerusalem.

People Are Furious With Damien Hirst For Not Making His Own Art

$

damien hirst art

There are nearly 1,400 of Damien Hirst's "spot" paintings in existence.

The artist has only painted around 25 of them himself.

So who made the other 1,340 or so paintings, which regularly sell for tens of thousands of dollars?

They were done by Hirst's coterie of assistants — a well-known fact. Even so, he told Reuters last year that "every single spot painting contains my eye, my hand, and my heart."

And they all contain his signature.

Damien Hirst was once the art world's golden boy. His conceptual art was snapped up for millions by art collectors, showcased in museums, and taught in art history classes.

But he has also been lambasted by famous critics like Roberts Hughes, who once said of Hirst's famous shark suspended in a tank of formaldehyde: "One might as well get excited about seeing a dead halibut on a slab."

And for many, his art has become a symbol of selling out, with concepts that either shock or disgust and only appeal to rich art collectors with questionable taste.

But the real reason Hirst is such a sore spot for many in the art community is that he doesn't physically create most of his own work.

His $78 million diamond-encrusted skull was made by royal jewelers Bentley & Skinner. The artist's stuffed shark was produced by MDM Props of London, a theatrical company. And his famous spot paintings were, of course, painted by his assistants.

Why? Because he couldn't be bothered to do the work himself.

Hirst once said he didn't paint his own spot paintings because, "I couldn't be f***ing arsed doing it," according to The Guardian.

He's even gone so far as to recommend his assistants' work over his own: "The best person who ever painted spots for me was Rachel [Howard]. She's brilliant. Absolutely f***ing brilliant. The best spot painting you can have by me is one painted by Rachel," he once said, according to Artlog.

As one story goes, one of Hirst's assistants asked the artist for a spot painting. Hirst told her to "make one of your own," he wrote in the book On The Way To Work. When she said she wanted one made by him, he responded, "But the only difference, between one painted by her and one of mine, is the money.'"

Hirst sees the real creative act as the conception, not the execution, of art. As the progenitor of the idea, he is therefore the artist.

Of course, he's not the only artist who feels this way. Andy Warhol had a factory. Mr. Brainwash has a factory. Jeff Koons has a team of assistants, too. Virtually all of these men admit to little talent and a bunch of ideas.

But no one is quite as annoying about it as Hirst. "I can’t wait to get into a position to make really bad art and get away with it,"he told The Times UK in 2003. "At the moment if I did certain things people would look at it, consider it and then say 'f off'. But after a while you can get away with things."

Since 2009, a third of Hirst's works have failed to sell at auction, and those that have been sold were for 30% less than in 2008.

Turns out, you can only "get away with things" for so long.

The 5 Worst Damien Hirst Spot Paintings Of All Time

$

Damien Hirst's spot paintings are not all the same.

Sure, colorful spots on 1,365 canvases may start to sound repetitive, but don't worry! They're all totally original.

Each work in the series has spots of a consistent size, though some are as big as 40 inches across and some are just a few millimeters. No two colors are repeated on a single canvas.

One thing does set some of the paintings apart — the artist himself only painted around 25 of the works. The rest were done by his assistants.

Below are the five worst Damien Hirst spot paintings. In the name of fairness, we've also compiled the five best (keep scrolling to see).
