The 10 Highest-Paid Players In The NHL Finals

0
0

Duncan Keith

With the Stanley Cup Finals starting tonight, one of the biggest differences between NHL players and those in the NBA Finals is the amount of money they make.

While players like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh are all making more than $17 million this season, all the players in the NHL Finals are making less than $5 million this season.

In fact, the highest-paid player on either team hasn't played since the 2010-11 season. Marc Savard of the Bruins was paid $6.5 million this season. However, because of post-concussion syndrome, it is believed that Savard will never play again.

#10 Patrice Bergeron — $2.7 Million

Team: Boston Bruins

Position: Center

Contract: 3 years, $15.0 million (Free agent after 2013-14 season)

Key Stats: Has five goals and six assists in the playoffs after scoring ten times with 32 points in the regular season.

#9 David Krejci — $3.1 Million

Team: Boston Bruins

Position: Center

Contract: 3 years, $15.8 million (Free agent after 2014-15 season)

Key Stats: Leads all players in the playoffs with nine goals and 21 points. His 12 assists are also second. During the regular season he scored ten goals and had 23 assists in 47 games.

#8 Nathan Horton — $3.2 Million

Team: Boston Bruins

Position: Right Wing

Contract: 6 years, $24.0 million (Free agent after this season)

Key Stats: Has seven goals and ten assists in the playoffs. His 17 points are second among all players. During the regular season he had 13 goals and nine assists in 43 games.

What Interns Really See In Their First Week At Google

0

Google HQ

Google has made a video that documents the first week at Google for five actual interns, in an attempt to  portray the work experience accurately — and not the way it's seen in the movie "The Internship."

The Mountain View Google HQ is plenty quirky, filled with unique features such as an outdoor volleyball court, spherical work stations, and a campus filled with Android sculptures and other art.

Who knows, you might even run into someone like Sergey Brin.

While not as in-your-face-Google as the movie "The Internship," there are certainly similarities to the actual headquarters, such as the Noogle hats for newcomers.

Get ready for some team bonding — Google has lots of group activities to help interns acclimate.

Feeling restless at your desk? Google offers some unique work spaces such as these spheres for a more comfortable work environment.

You get to check out some of Google's experimental tech such as this massive six-monitor display, which appears to be running Google Earth.

Where You've Seen 'This Is the End' Bros Together Before

This Is The End movie james franco

In "This Is the End," we see the likes of Seth RogenJames FrancoJonah Hill, and a slew of other stars gather together to face the apocalypse.

The funny thing is, most of these guys are friends in real life — and have costarred together a lot of times before.

Don't believe us?

"Freaks and Geeks" (1999-2000): Seth Rogen and James Franco

"This Is the End" may have never happened if not for the short-lived series "Freaks and Geeks." The cult favorite only lasted one season, but it marks the first major roles for Seth Rogen and James Franco. The show is referenced many times throughout the film, and costars Jason Segel and Martin Starr make cameo appearances.

"Undeclared" (2001-2002): Jay Baruchel, Jason Segel, and Seth Rogen

Like "Freaks and Geeks,""Undeclared" is an underrated (and short-lived) TV show that was brought to us by Judd Apatow. It doesn't have the same following as "Freaks and Geeks," but it does feature the same caliber of now-famous stars, like Jay Baruchel, Jason Segel, and Seth Rogen (bonus: Charlie Hunnam also starred!).

"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" (2005): Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Paul Rudd

We used the following three factors to determine the overall growth score of each city:

  1. Population: Population growth in the working-age population (16+) between 2007 and 2011
  2. Employment: Growth in the percentage of employed residents 16+ between 2007 and 2011

New Orleans: The Big Easy has made an inspirational comeback since 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

Rising out of the tragedy, New Orleans has rebuilt itself into a thriving energy, education and tech hub.  Rich with music, food and culture, New Orleans has plenty to offer, and the schools are improving as well—in the past 10 years, the percentage of eighth-grade students passing Louisiana’s LEAP test has more than doubled.

The city’s universities show a commitment to public service and community enrichment, and Tulane University’s GIST Program connects seventh grade girls with female role models and mentors in STEM fields.  Additionally, Dillard University has expanded their campus in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, thereby supporting the New Orleans community.

2. Gainesville, Florida: A growing startup hub (Gainesville is home to music startup Grooveshark), Gainesville has plenty of resources for entrepreneurs.

The Gainesville Technology Enterprise Center provides tools and training for early-stage startups.

High schoolers can benefit from this entrepreneurial environment as well by participating in the University of Florida’s outreach and youth program, such as the Young Entrepreneurs for Leadership and Sustainability Summer Program.

3. Fargo, North Dakota: Fargo’s thriving manufacturing, education and healthcare industries contribute to its growing economy.

Businesspeople can take advantage of the city’s Department of Economic Development

There is a variety of entertainment in Fargo as well.  The city holds plenty of parks, a yearly winter carnival, the largest art museum in the state and the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra.

The 25 Most Dangerous Cities In America

0
0

flint michiganViolent crime rose in the U.S. in 2012 for the first time in six years, according to preliminary crime data released by the FBI.

Business Insider analyzed the report to determine the cities with the most violent crime per capita. In the three years we have published this ranking, many cities have repeatedly made the list.

From the decaying Rust Belt, Flint, Mich. emerged as the most dangerous city in 2012, 2011, and 2010, according to our analysis.

Detroit, Mich., Oakland, Calif., and St. Louis, Mo. were also consistently among the most dangerous cities.

Click here to skip to see the most dangerous cities >

To improve our ranking and understand its limitations, we consulted several experts.

The main problem with the FBI's Uniform Crime Report, according to UCLA professor Mark Kleiman, is that some cities have broader boundaries and include safer, suburban areas in their crime reports. The center of the city might be crime-ridden, but the safer outskirts skew the overall picture.

Another problem with the UCR is that different police precincts have different ways of classifying aggravated assault versus "simple assault,"Carnegie Melon's Alfred Blumstein told us.

Despite these problems, the UCR remains the definitive source of crime data in the U.S. "There is no perfect system, but this is best that we have," says criminal justice professor Tod Burke.

Our preliminary 2012 ranking includes all cities with a population over 100,000. We compared the cities' rates of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, and robbery against 2011 national averages, with the percent deviations averaged to determine overall ranking for violent crime. We did not count aggravated assault due to inconsistent reporting of this crime.

We have included a brief discussion of crime in each city and will add to it any useful insight or responses shared in the comment section or by email.

Now with no further ado ...

18 Extremely Religious Big American Companies

0

In n out bible cupTalking about religion and politics can be dangerous among friends. It's doubly so for businesses.

That double-edged sword became crystal clear last year after Chick-Fil-A's COO made comments about the chain's opposition to gay marriage. It sparked a massive backlash from the media, gay and lesbian couples, and even the mayor of Boston.

The controversy also helped the company shatter sales records after former Arkansas governor and Fox commentator Mike Huckabee organized a "Chick-Fil-A appreciation day."

Many other big companies in America are also religious, including some that might surprise you.

[Kim Bhasin and Melanie Hicken contributed to an earlier version of this article.]

Chick-fil-A provoked a firestorm of criticism after its COO made comments about gay marriage.

Founded by devout Southern Baptist Truett Cathy in 1946 in Hapeville, Georgia, Chick-fil-A has since expanded to become a major American fast-food chain, with more than 1,500 locations in 39 states.

Throughout its success, the company has stuck to its founder's religiously-motivated decision to be closed on Sundays, and has donated significant amounts of money to conservative groups.

The chain's religious bent turned controversial last year after Truet's son and Chick-Fil-A COO Dan Cathy made controversial comments about gay marriage, saying, about the company that "We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit"

Forever 21 prints a reference to one of the most oft quoted passages of the New Testament on the bottom of all of its bags.

Purchase a skimpy $15 top or $19 skirt from trendy but budget-conscious clothing retailer Forever 21 and you may notice "John 3:16" printed on your shopping bag.

Printed on the bottom of each of the store's bags, the biblical reference is perhaps the most obvious reference to the religious beliefs promoted by the store's owners, the Chang Family, who are born-again Christians.

Mrs. Chang told Bloomberg Businessweek last year that the store had religious roots, citing that "God told her she should open a store and that she would be successful."

The store provoked criticism in the summer of 2011 when it released a slew of religious-themed tees emblazoned with slogans such as "Jesus ♥ You" and "Holy."

Since 2000, the company has employed approximately 120 office chaplains who are there to provide "compassionate pastoral care" to employees, according to Tyson's website

FACT OR FICTION? The Craziest Fast Food Urban Legends

0
0

burger king foodDid you hear the one about a finger appearing in a cup of Wendy's chili?

Rumors about fast food crop up all the time, from where chains source their ingredients to how food is served.

We dug up some of the most persistent rumors about fast food, and shed some light on what's fact and what's fiction, so you can rest easy next time you pull up at the drive-thru.

McDonald's milkshakes are made with animal fat

FICTION

A prominent rumor on the web is that McDonald's milkshakes are made with reconstituted animal fat.

This is fiction. Though this rumor might seem believable, given each milkshake contains as many as 560 calories, nowhere in any of the chain's lists of ingredients for milkshakes is animal fat listed.

Kentucky Fried Chicken does not actually contain chicken

FICTION

Whether or not KFC is using "chicken" in the fast-food chain's recipes is called into question on a number of websites.

A website claims Kentucky Fried Chicken became KFC to conceal a government mandated name change after the "organisms" used by the chain as a source of meat could no longer be considered chickens.

It goes on to allege the genetically modified birds have no beaks, feet or feathers.

This is fiction. In KFC's Ingredient Guide, the company lists chicken, indicating no such name change was mandated. And the name change had nothing to do with ingredients sourced by the company.

In-N-Out Burger prints bible citations on cups and wrappers

FACT

Most companies shy away from any religious affiliation, but one west coast fast-food chain is rumored to print the gospel on cups and wrappers.

This is a fact. In-N-Out Burger prints bible citations (like John 3:16) on wrappers.

The 9 Deadliest Foods On The Planet

0
0

Elderberries

Humans are one of the few creatures on this planet who have the capability of ignoring our basic survival instinct.

We jump out of perfectly good airplanes, something that still sets off alarms in the most veteran skydivers.

We push ourselves to the edge of death and back with physical demands on our bodies that defy reason: ultramarathons in the desert, living in microgravity, setting the world record for holding one’s breath under water.

Yet as contradictory as it sounds, testing these limits is probably what makes us feel the most human, the most attuned to nature and our own potential.

Potential when it comes to soaring above the skies, jumping eight feet in the air… and eating the most bizarre, even dangerous, dishes set in front of us on the dinner table.

What are some of the deadliest foods the world has ever seen? Poisonous or harmful by design, not accident, and something that has us questioning our sanity when we choose to take a bite?

FUGU – SHIMONOSEKI, JAPAN

Fugu (河豚), also known as pufferfish, is a fish whose liver and internal organs contain deadly amounts of the poison tetrodotoxin, for which there is no known antidote.

It might surprise many to know, however, that any fugu chef worth his weight in Japan will attempt to leave just the right amount of poison for a tingling sensation to pass through the diner’s tongue, leaving him satisfied with the taste and experience.

Just like climbing the picturesque Mt. Fuji, many westerners try this dish for the experience, the risk you may be poisoned.

In all honesty, I found it to be somewhat less thrilling than gambling (and this is coming from an adrenaline junkie), even with the threat of death tossed in.

Thirty years ago, it caused a stir throughout Japan as Bando Mitsugoro, a famous Kabuki actor, died after eating four servings … though he may have overindulged a bit.

If you are in the mood to “risk your life”, be sure to travel to the city of Shimonoseki in western Japan where no fugu-related deaths have ever been reported.

In addition, you have the choice of raw fugu sashimi, fried fugu (tastes like chicken), boiled fugu, fugu with miso, and fugu sake.

ACKEE – JAMAICA

Turning our attention to the Caribbean, we find the delicious but dangerous Ackee fruit.

Although rich in vitamins and protein, if the fruit is eaten before it is fully ripe, it prevents glucose from being released from the liver, quickly lowering one’s blood sugar and ensuring violent illness or death.

Many have called the symptoms following ingestion of the unripe fruit “Jamaican Vomiting Sickness.”

BULLFROG – NAMIBIA

Why settle for mere legs in France when you can have the whole frog?

The Giant Namibian Bullfrog is a delicacy in this African nation, but when you consume them, timing is everything.

People are generally advised to dine “after the third rain” or when the frogs start croaking and breeding.

Failure to do so will usually result in kidney failure, what the locals call Oshiketakata.

There's A Lot More To Tasting Chocolate Than Just Eating It

0

Richart Macarons

I'm usually satisfied with a plain Hershey's bar, but I do know good chocolate when I taste it. I was definitely in the company of good chocolate when I sat down for a private chocolate tasting with Michel Richart, the genius behind Paris-based chocolatier Richart.

Richart stands by the belief that chocolate should bring pleasure to the taster, the same belief his father Joseph Richart had when he started the company in 1925.

The chocolatier has gained some serious accolades for his work: National Geographic's Inside Travel named him one of the world's top chocolatiers, and has been awarded the Ruban Bleu, France's most prestigious confectioner's honor, a total of seven times.

Richart has several retail locations in Paris, but in the U.S., his sweets can be found at Gastronomie 491 on New York City's Upper West Side.

During our private tasting, Richart walked me through his unique five-part method of tasting and enjoying his chocolate and macarons, giving me a real joie de vivre. It turns out there's a lot more to tasting chocolate than just stuffing your face.

A delicate display was laid out for me when I entered the room, and my gastronomical journey began. Richart explained his "QuintEssence" method of tasting, a way to enjoy the taste experience on five levels.

The first level is presentation. Richart said like with any art, you need to set the stage.

The temperature, humidity, organization of the product on the table, and even the light in the room can give the product more or less pleasure. We had these chocolates at room temperature in a moderately lit, dry space.

Cisco Robo boss 08

How many times have you made a Skype call where you picked up your computer and walked it around to show your caller something?

The problem is, your buddy is utterly dependent on you to move around.

Cisco and iRobot have solved that problem with a new robo-boss that will be available in 2014. It lets the person on the other end control their whereabouts and it uses some pretty cool autonomous and sensor tech to do it, Youssef Saleh, an iRobot VP, told us.

Just outfit the robot with a schematic of the building in the robot's iPad app. Tap the place you want to go and it rolls there on its own, avoiding objects and other people. No joystick steering required, Saleh says.

The companies wouldn't announce pricing, but iRobot charges $4,000 to $6,000 for a similar Robo doctor unit designed for hospitals. We expect this unit to cost about the same.

Meet the iRobot Ava 500 for enterprises.

The robot uses iRobot’s autonomous navigation to drive and avoid people, objects.

It integrates with Cisco TelePresence and can post instant messages and presence info.
