  • Humans produce an estimated 300 million tons of plastic every year.
  • But plastic is increasingly being recognized as one of the biggest threats to the environment.
  • Reuters sent photographers around the world to document what a week's worth of plastic looks like for average families.

The use of plastic has exploded in the last half century, so much that we produce an estimated 300 million tons of the stuff every year.

But plastic is increasingly being recognized as one of the biggest threats to the environment — it takes so long to decompose that much of our plastic waste ends up in oceans, rivers, beaches, and other natural habitats.

How much plastic are we really using at a household level? Reuters sought to answer that question by sending photographers around the world to document a week's worth of plastic waste generated by a typical family.

The photos are a sobering reminder of how ubiquitous plastic is in our everyday lives, from the packaging our food comes in to the shopping bags we use to carry it home.

Read on to see how much plastic a typical family generates in a week:

Roshani Shrestha, a mother from Kathmandu, Nepal, said it's hard to avoid plastic bags where she lives. "We would use alternatives to plastic since it helps the environment, but it is not possible, since most of the products come either in plastic wrap or some other forms of plastic," she said.

The waiting is over — the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia has finally begun.

On Thursday, English pop singer Robbie Williams and Russian opera singer Aida Garifullina joined forces to deliver a memorable three-song concert ahead of the tournament's opening match between host country Russia and Group A opponents Saudi Arabia.

The opening ceremony had everything — from gymnastics and pyrotechnics to Williams giving the FOX TV camera the middle finger.

Russian president Vladimir Putin even delivered a speech.

Check out all the best, most mesmerising, and controversial photographs from the opening ceremony below.

The 2018 World Cup has officially kicked off. Soccer teams from Saudi Arabia and Russia — the tournament's host country — play the first match Thursday morning.

In preparation for the games, Russia has devoted more than $2.8 billion toward building and updating 12 massive stadiums across 11 cities. The arenas pay tribute to traditional Russian architecture — characterized by sculptural fixtures — while also nodding to Putin-era building design, which have sharp angles and flamboyant patterns.

Take a tour below:

4 easy ways to beat the heat at Disney World

$

Disney World

With summer quickly approaching and temperatures beginning to rise, spending all day in the Disney theme parks can be exhausting.

Here are the four best ways to beat the heat and cool down during your Disney vacation:

Water parks

The Walt Disney World Resort is home to two exciting and unique water parks that are definitely worth the visit.

Both water parks are chock full of thrilling water slides, relaxing lazy rivers, waves pools, and sandy lounge areas that will not only help you cool down in that infamous Florida heat but transport you to a watery world of fun.

Home to one of the world’s largest wave pools, Typhoon Lagoon is a tropical paradise retreat with sandy beaches and exciting attractions such as the roller-coaster-like, Crush ‘N’ Gusher and Miss Adventure Falls, the longest ride in Disney Water Parks history. Typhoon Lagoon is also the  home to my favorite lazy river experience on Disney property I could spend an entire day lounging there.

You can also sunbathe and splash around Disney’s other water park, Blizzard Beach. Blizzard Beach poses itself as a ski resort that has melted away into a watery wonderland.  Guests who are looking for thrills can travel up to Mount Gushmore and experience extreme water slides including one of the world’s tallest and fastest water slides, Summit Plummet.

Resort pools

If one thing is certain about visiting Florida during the summer, it is that you’re going to need to spend some time in the pool.

The Walt Disney World Resort is home to more than 25 themed resorts each possessing their own unique feature pool as well as several additional quiet pools and children pool areas.

Trust me, these feature pools are totally worth diving into. For example, one of my favorites is The Lost City of Cibolo pool area at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort (pictured above). This enormous area boasts a massive Mayan pyramid, cascading wall of water, a water slide, hot tubs and playground area.

Another standout is the three-acre Stormalong Bay at Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts. Between the zero-entry sandy-bottomed pool, lazy river, and massive water slide, this pool experience honestly feels like a water park.

Indoor attractions and entertainment

So when you aren’t soaking up the sun at Disney’s water parks or pools, chances are you’re in one of the theme parks. Although many of the attractions and entertainment are outdoors, there are plenty of indoor options in each park that are out of the sun and into the air conditioning.

Many of the classic attractions at the Magic Kingdom such as The Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and, my personal favorite cool down attraction, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, are perfect for visiting on a hot day. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy some of the old school attractions that you may not have experienced in a while.

EPCOT offers great indoor e-ticket attractions (with indoor queues) such as Soarin’ Around the World , Test Track and Frozen Ever After.

Personally, if I am feeling hot, the best opportunity to cool down is to take in one of the indoor theatrical performances such as Finding Nemo - the Musical at Disney’s Animal Kingdom or For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Not only are these shows perfect breaks from the Florida sun, but they’re also really entertaining.  Make sure to check your time’s guides when you enter the park.

20 discontinued candies we wish would make a comeback

Not all candy is created equal.

For every smash success like Snickers or Twix, you have little-remembered, discontinued candies like Summit Bars or Life Savers Holes. But even though these 20 sweets are gone from this world, it doesn't mean we don't miss them whenever we walk past the candy aisle at the grocery store.

Whether they suffered from low sales, poorly received recipe changes, or were literally ruled illegal, these snacks are impossible to get — at least in the way you remember them from when you were a kid.

In honor of National Candy Month, take a stroll down memory lane and remember these 20 candies that you're probably still craving today.

The Wonder Ball was outlawed due to choking hazards.

We'll never be over Wonder Balls. This chocolate ball used to be filled with a plastic toy, but, due to choking concerns, Nestlé was forced to change the center from toys to candy. This lasted until 2004, when Nestlé sold the Wonder Ball to the Frankford Candy & Chocolate Company, which chose to discontinue them.

Cookies-N-Creme Bars weren't long for this world, but made a big impression.

Twix released two flavors in 1990: Cookies-n-Creme and Chocolate Fudge. However, only Cookies-N-Creme inspired a petition and a Facebook page begging for its return.

Instead of the classic caramel inside, these bars featured a chocolate cookie surrounded by creme and a layer of chocolate. They were only around for a year.

If you hated roasting marshmallows, Hershey S'mores bars were the candy for you.

Hershey's S'mores was the answer for anyone too lazy or too far from a campfire to make their own s'mores. The bars combined chocolate, marshmallow, and graham crackers into one prepackaged snack.

Sadly, this delicious candy bar didn't last too long, and was discontinued shortly after its 2003 creation, most likely due to low sales. But the internet never forgets. There's a Quora thread asking the important question: Why did this happen? There's also a Facebook page dedicated to getting these bars back on shelves and into our lives once more.

best backpack

The Insider Pick:

  • Backpacks are perfect for anyone who commutes to work every day or just tends to carry a lot of gear with them when they go out.

  • The Herschel Supply Co. Little America Backpack is the perfect work-to-weekend bag because it's roomy enough to pack for a short vacation, but not so large that it looks comical at the office.

I got really into everyday backpacks when I worked in an office. Simply put, I found them to be the best way to carry all my daily essentials — laptop, book for the commute, lunch when I remembered to pack it — without destroying my already tension-prone shoulders.

Although the word “backpack” still reminds me of middle school, modern-day backpacks are anything but childish. It’s entirely possible to find a backpack that is equal parts cool and functional, no matter your style or your daily needs.

A good everyday backpack should fit what you need for a busy day in a well-organized manner, without being so bulky that it becomes difficult to carry. The right daily backpack should cater to your lifestyle, but on the whole, our top picks will take you from the gym to the office to your after work plans in style.

Here are the best backpacks you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best backpack overall

Why you'll love it: The Herschel Supply Co. Little America Backpack is designed to carry all your daily essentials, including your laptop, and look good while doing it.

I know. It seems like everyone has a Herschel Supply Co. backpack these days. But there’s a good reason for that. The company's designs are iconic and they go with everything from polished work clothes to more relaxed jeans-and-a-t-shirt outfits.

The Little America Backpack is our top choice because it’s roomy and durable without being over-the-top. You don’t need a hiking pack for a trip to the office, but this backpack comes with a 15-inch laptop sleeve that’s padded and lined with fleece for scratch-proof travel, an easy access front pocket, a key clip, and an interior pocket that's ideal for storing headphones and chargers. Padded and contoured shoulder straps allow for maximum comfort during your commute.

This Herschel backpack is beloved by many. It has more than 1,000 reviews on Amazon and has been recommended by Popular Mechanics, Travel + Leisure, and NYMag’s The Strategist.

“I’ve been traveling with this backpack for a year and a half, and I love it! It’s big enough to fit all of my essentials while being small enough to fit as a carry-on on all airlines,” travel blogger Raya Encheva told The Strategist.

“Most backpacks would leave your shoulders or back strained but this bag is as comfortable as it gets,” an Amazon reviewer named Bobby writes.

Pros: Roomy and durable, front pocket and internal “media pocket,” padded for comfort, comes with a laptop sleeve

Cons: Not waterproof

Buy the Herschel Supply Co. Little America Backpack for $70 - $99

The best backpack with great storage

Why you'll love it: If you could stock an entire Staples’ with the contents of your work backpack, you need lots of storage. The Incase Icon Pack has seemingly endless pockets hidden in a sleek design.

As any freelancer on their way to make the local coffee shop their office for the day will tell you, nothing beats a backpack with lots of pockets. The Incase Icon Pack is basically the clown car of everyday backpacks. It has 21 compartments!

There are multiple zippered sections inside the can hold countless items, including a middle section large enough to fit a laptop, tablet, and other gadgets. You can store your electronics separately from any food or liquids that you don’t want to spill and possibly ruin them. The pack is “tech-optimized,” according to the brand, with individual pockets sized to fit your devices.

“The Incase Icon manages to fit an almost absurd amount of organization and storage into a bag that maintains the clean lines of a more refined backpack,” says The Wirecutter, which lists this bag as a top pick.

The backpack has also been featured by FastCompany and Forbes, and we’ve reviewed it here at Insider Picks.

“The pack itself is compact and slender, but holds everything my (much bigger) model did before it,” writes our reporter Mara Leighton about the brand’s smaller version, the Icon Lite.

Pros: Ample storage space, padded pocket for laptop, sleek no-frills design, comes in a smaller “Lite” size

Cons: Bulkier than other options, additional storage might not be necessary for the average commuter

Buy the Incase Icon Pack for $97.96 (originally $199.95)

The best backpack for bad weather

Why you'll love it: The Fjällräven Kanken Classic Pack is dirt- and water-resistant so your stuff stays clean and dry, even when it’s torrential outside. Plus, it's super cute.

There’s nothing worse than getting caught in the rain during your commute, only to open your backpack and find that everything inside is soaked through. The Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack is our favorite weatherproof option. It keeps your electronics and papers dry, even if you’re caught off-guard by a rainstorm.

Though it lacks the sophisticated storage solutions of, say, the Incase Icon, it’s still roomy enough to house necessary items, including laptops up to 15-inches. Plus, it’s made of durable Vinylon F material that is resistant to both dirt and water damage and easily cleaned. In addition to the main compartment, there are front and side pockets where you can store items that need to be accessible while you travel.

The Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack is remarkably well-rated. It has 4.1 out of 5 stars on Amazon based on over 2,200 reviews.

“Even when I'm carrying heavy things, I don't feel much of the weight on my shoulders,” writes one buyer. “It is definitely spacious and can hold numerous things; nice and rectangular shape which makes organizing easy.”

Pros: Made of dirt- and water-resistant material that’s easy to clean, multiple pockets, includes a laptop sleeve

Cons: Doesn’t have as many storage options as some of the other packs on this list

Buy the Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack for $69 - $80

  • Working moms and working dads often need a more flexible work environment.
  • But just one in 30 job postings tout their family-friendly or flexible work options.
  • The most flexible jobs were sales manager, sales engineer, and team assembler.

Just one in 30 job postings tout their family-friendly or flexible work options, according to a recent study by Indeed Hiring Lab economist Andrew Flowers.

Indeed mined the descriptions of jobs that have at least 10,000 openings for keywords like work-life-balance, flexible working hours, or working remotely.

There were two types of jobs that broke into the top twenty. One was high-skill, high-paying careers, like those in engineering. That follows tech companies' reputation for competitive perks.

The other category included jobs that have flexible schedules due to the nature of the job. That included sales positions, home health aide, and assembler.

"Flexible in these cases may just mean, 'You'll work when we want you to,'" according to the Indeed report.

Ordered from least to most likely to advertise their flexible work options, here are the most flexible jobs for working parents, or anyone who wants out of the typical 9-to-5.

12 body language tricks to help you nail your next job interview

resume, job interview

In a job interview, what your body says is just as — if not more — important than your actual words.

"Like it or not your future employer is assessing you from head to toe — from your movements, to your facial expressions, to your voice, to what you say and how you say it," body language expert Lillian Glass told INSIDER. "If you don't have the right body language —  which encompasses how you move, your facial movements and expression, voice and speech — you can turn off your employer to the point you won't get hired. So your interview may be over before you think it has begun."

Here are 12 body language tips and tricks to help you nail your next job interview.

1. Walk in with your shoulders pulled back and head held high.

"Remember that the job interview begins as soon as you exit your car, as you have no idea who is watching you," body language expert Tonya Reiman told INSIDER.

She advised walking in with your shoulders pulled back and head held high.

"Walk directly toward the person you are reaching out to by making eye contact and introducing yourself (this is typically the receptionist)," she said.

2. Nix sweaty palms with cold water.

After you've checked in, you'll likely have a few minutes to wait. During this time, Reiman recommends using the bathroom.

"Go into a stall – do 10 deep diaphragmatic breaths to keep you calm and when you leave the stall, run your wrists under cold water for roughly 20 to 30 seconds," she said. "This will ensure cool palms during the handshake (if you tend to have nervous, sweaty palms)."

3. Give a firm handshake.

With your palms sufficiently cooled, you're ready for that first handshake with your potential next boss.

"Have a solid palm-to-palm handshake," Glass advised. "Don't shake their hand too hard or too delicately."

These photos reveal what it's like to shop at Walmart in Japan (WMT)

Walmart Japan

  • Walmart operates the Japanese supermarket chain Seiyu, which looks surprisingly similar to Walmart stores in the United States.
  • Walmart acquired the Seiyu grocery chain in 2008, six years after initially investing in it.
  • Seiyu carries a lot of American candy bars, sodas, meats, and more. It also has an arcade and food court.

Even though the store goes by a different name, shopping at Walmart in Japan is a lot like shopping at Walmart in the United States.

Walmart first invested in the Japanese grocery chain Seiyu in 2002, taking full control of the chain in 2008. Although the stores still operate under the name Seiyu, the chain is a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart.

There are 328 Seiyu locations in Japan, including 236 supermarkets, 91 hypermarkets that sell apparel in addition to food and consumables, and one Tokyo location that stocks general merchandise but no food. It recently partnered with the Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten to form a grocery delivery service that will launch in the second half of 2018.

Seiyu opened in 1963, long before Walmart was involved in the business. There are a lot of similarities between Seiyu in Japan and Walmart in the US. One similarity is the products offered — the Japanese stores offer products like American beef,  Coca-Cola, Snickers, and Kit Kat. However, products like Kit Kats are often sold in varieties that aren't available in the US, like green tea and purple sweet potato.

Japanese supermarkets tend to be impeccably clean and organized, and Seiyu is no exception. At the same time, the stores are reminiscent of American Walmart stores, with bright fluorescent lights and wide aisles.

Here's what Walmart is like in Japan:

Walmart Japan operates under the name Seiyu. Walmart first invested in the supermarket chain Seiyu in 2002 and officially acquired it in 2008.

The stores are huge, and many locations are open for 24 hours. Like Walmart in the US, the stores can often be found in strip malls.

The stores are generally very well maintained and spotlessly clean. The stores sell a lot of American brands, like Coca-Cola and Disney.

best android tablet

The Insider Pick:

Android tablets never really caught on in the same way that Apple's iPad did, but that doesn't mean there aren't some good ones out there.

We've tested about a dozen Android tablets over the years, and some have really impressed us with their solid performance, unique features, or low price tags.

Whether you're looking for a cheap tablet, a sturdy one for your kids, a productive one for students, or the best of the best in Android tablets, there's a tablet for everyone in our buying guide.

Here are the best Android tablets you can buy:

You can also check out our guide to the best tablets and the best iPads if you want more choices.

Updated on 06/14/2018 by Malarie Gokey: Added the new Huawei MediaPad M5 tablets as our top pick and removed older models. Also updated prices and formatting.

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

SEE ALSO: The best iPads you can buy

The best Android tablet overall

Why you'll love them: The 8.4- and 10.8-inch Huawei MediaPad M5 tablets are excellent high-end Android devices with sharp screens and a slick aluminum design.

If you want a high-end tablet that runs Android, your choices are fairly limited — or at least, they were. Huawei recently introduced two new MediaPad tablets that have slick aluminum builds, sharp screens, and solid processing power. If you want an Android tablet with high-end specs and looks, Huawei's are the best.

We tested both tablets for several weeks to put them through their paces, and they excelled at all the tasks we want a tablet to do well: streaming video, playing games, and handling web browsing.

The 8.4-inch MediaPad is the most portable of the two and the easiest to hold one-handed. Its slim design, light weight, and aluminum casing make it the perfect tablet to stash in your bag when you travel or commute. It's also very comfortable to use at home on the couch or in the bed when you want to kick back with Netflix.

Huawei's larger 10.8-inch MediaPad is also very high-end with the same sturdy aluminum casing as the smaller model. The larger screen is an obvious plus for watching video, and it's still portable enough to take with you on the go.

Both the 8.4 and 10.8-inch versions of the tablet have crisp 2K screens with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels. We watched Netflix on both tablets and the colors, contrast, and overall image quality of both tablets' screens was impressive. You can also download quite a few movies and shows from Netflix or Prime Video for offline access, thanks to the 64GB of storage onboard.

The audio quality on the 10.8-inch MediaPad was quite a bit better, largely because it has four speakers versus the two found on the smaller version. However, both tablets sound quite good, thanks to Harmon Kardon's tuning and Huawei's inclusion of the AK4376 audio chip and its Histen technology for Hi-Res audio.

The great screen quality combined with these speakers make both the new MediaPads ideal for watching video or playing games — the two main reasons why people buy tablets. Beyond looking good and sounding great, the MediaPad tablets also perform well, thanks to Huawei's speedy Kirin 960 Octa-core processor and 4GB of RAM.

As far as battery life goes, the 8.4-inch tablet has a 5,100mAh battery that's good for about 11 hours of video playback, while the 10.8-inch tablet has a 7,500mAh battery that should last you about 12 hours when playing video.

When it comes time to juice the tablets back up, Huawei's Quick Charge tech fully charges the 8.4-inch tablet in about 2 hours and the 10.8-inch tablet in about 3 hours.

Although a tablet isn't a necessity, it's a nice thing to have for entertainment while you travel, commute, or relax at home. The 8.4-inch MediaPad will cost you $320 and the 10.8-inch MediaPad costs more at $359, but both are a very good deal and much cheaper than our former top pick from Samsung, which is now our runner-up in this guide.

Pros: Great screen, solid metal build, fast processors, good audio, 64GB of storage, 10-12 hour battery life during video viewing

Cons: Bit pricey

Buy the 8.4-inch Huawei MediaPad M5 on Amazon for $319.99

Buy the 10.8-inch Huawei MediaPad M5 on Amazon for $359.99

The best Android tablet with a stylus

Why you'll love it: Samsung's Galaxy Tab S3 is as stylish as it is powerful, it has a stellar screen for watching Netflix, and it comes with the S Pen stylus for drawing.

Samsung has been making excellent Android tablets for years, and its recently launched Galaxy Tab S3 continues that tradition. It's a high-end Android tablet that can compete with Apple's 9.7-inch iPad Pro on nearly every level.

The Tab S3 is a stylish, well-made tablet with a metal frame and glossy glass back. It borrows design cues from Samsung's Galaxy S8 phone, though the Tab S3's screen has more normal bezels around it. If you hate fingerprints or simply fear that the glass back is in danger of shattering or scratching, we recommend you check out this case by Poetic or Samsung's keyboard case.

The keyboard case is sturdy and turns your tablet into a quasi-laptop. Android isn't really meant for laptop tasks, so the Tab S3 probably won't replace your trusty laptop, but it'll do in a pinch. The real appeal of this tablet is for entertainment and creative purposes.

Samsung sure knows how to make astonishingly beautiful screens. The Tab S3 has a gorgeous display that supports HDR content. I watched some demo videos on the tablet, and I was really impressed by the clarity, color reproduction, and intensity of the brilliant screen.

Reviewers across the board at Business InsiderCNET, Digital Trends, Engadget, and Ars Technica agree that the Galaxy Tab S3 has one of the best screens you'll find on any tablet. It's the perfect tablet for Netflix in bed.

Every Tab S3 comes with Samsung's new S Pen stylus, which is great for drawing and feels like a real pen. I love to draw on tablets, and I was impressed by the lack of lag on the Tab S3. Palm rejection was a little spotty in some apps, but overall, it's a decent tablet for drawing or note taking.

If you have about $450 to spend on a high-end Android tablet, you can't do better than the Galaxy Tab S3. You should also take a peek at the best micoSD cards you can buy to expand your tablet's storage.

Pros: Gorgeous screen, fast processor, S Pen stylus is included, and powerful speakers

Cons: Expensive and the glass back can easily break with rough handling

Buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 on Amazon for $443 (originally $599.99)

Buy the Poetic Slimline case for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 on Amazon for $7.95

The best Android tablet for less than $100

Why you'll love it: Amazon's Fire HD 8 may be incredibly cheap, but it's a good Android tablet for anyone on a budget.

Amazon makes lots of cheap Android tablets. Some are low-powered, low-resolution slates, but others, like the newly updated Fire HD 8, are actually great bang for your buck based on our testing. Now that Amazon is offering deals on select phones and its Fire tablets, this cheap tablet is even cheaper — provided you don't mind seeing ads on your screen.

Since it's a budget tablet, the new Fire HD 8 isn't top-of-the-line, but it offers just enough quality tech to make it a great deal. The 8-inch screen has a HD 1,280 x 800-pixel resolution, which is sharp enough to make watching videos on it a good experience. It's just the right size for reading, and the grippy plastic body is comfortable to hold.

Amazon offers some fun colors, too, making this a great tablet for anyone who's bored with metallic tones and plain black budget devices. It should be relatively durable, though it isn't water resistant, so don't go dunking it in the bath or pool.

The new Fire HD 8 offers decent performance, and Amazon's custom version of Android, Fire OS, runs smoothly. You can choose between 16 or 32GB of storage, but no matter how much you pick, you can expand it via a microSD card slot up to 256GB. We recommend that you do so, and you can check out the best micoSD cards you can buy here.

You'll have access to the Alexa voice assistant, 400,000 apps, and Amazon's Mayday customer support service, which connects you with a real person via a live video chat to help you solve any problem with your device.

If you're a Prime member, you can watch Prive Video, read dozens of ebooks, stream free music, and access shopping quickly on Fire OS. Prime buyers have the option of getting the tablet with special offers, which are ads on the lockscreen and elsewhere. The price will be lower, but ads may be annoying to some. We've included both prices, so you can decide.

It's a very good deal for people who want a cheap Android tablet. If you have a young kid who would also love a cheap tablet, read all about the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet in the next slide.

child migrant shelter brownsville texas

  • Images of a detention center for immigrant children show the conditions in which nearly 1,500 boys are sheltered in Brownsville, Texas.
  • Murals of presidential quotes could be seen inside, some of which feature quotes in both English and Spanish — including one of President Donald Trump saying, "Sometimes losing a battle you find a new way to win the war."
  • Children are allowed to leave the complex for only two hours each day. Many apparently have spent time inside watching the Disney animated film "Moana" and learning about US history.

Images of a detention center for immigrant children show the conditions in which nearly 1,500 boys are being sheltered in Brownsville, Texas.

A small group of reporters from outlets including MSNBC and The Washington Post were allowed to tour the facility on Wednesday. MSNBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff reported his observations and some pictures of the facility in a lengthy Twitter thread that evening.

The Administration for Children and Families at the US Department of Health and Human Services shared the photos with Business Insider on Thursday.

Casa Padre, which used to be a Walmart, is operated by Southwest Key, a firm that runs more than a dozen shelters in Texas housing unaccompanied immigrant children, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

The organization is contracted by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a division of HHS that manages minors suspected of crossing the US border illegally and oversees their transfer to family custody or foster care.

While some children cross the border illegally without family members, the Trump administration has also implemented what it calls a "zero-tolerance" policy with regard to illegal border crossings by immigrant families. The policy calls for adults to be criminally prosecuted, causing them to lose custody of the children accompanying them.

The policy has been deeply controversial and emotionally fraught.

Miguel Nogueras, an assistant federal public defender, told CNN that roughly 500 children had been separated from their parents since May.

Here are some photos of Casa Padre:

10 horror stories that will make all socially-awkward people cringe

broad city awkward

Awkward situations happen to all of us. If you don’t have social anxiety, you can probably just laugh off embarrassment and move on with your life. If you do have social anxiety, those moments will haunt you for roughly the rest of your life.

We combed Reddit for some of the most subtly-brutal social situations out there. They’re definitely not for the faint of heart and, yes, one involves public bathrooms. Of course, these are just for fun as we can't independently authenticate them.

“Realize at the last minute I have no angle to properly insert myself into the group.”

"At pretty much any large group gathering I'm forced to attend (the worst are for work)... everyone standing in groups of two-five, chatting away. I look around quickly for someone who's either super chatty and will fill up the conversation or someone I can actually think of something to say to. Walk up to the group. Realize at the last minute I have no angle to properly insert myself into the group. End up standing slightly behind someone who can't see me, who continues chatting away.

"Other person/people try to focus on the conversation but clearly see me loitering creepily. Five-30 seconds pass. Anxiety rises, and I bail to the next group. /repeat until I finally get too flustered and make a break to the bathroom to regroup. EVERY F------ TIME.” – Redditor NomiTheMad

“Pray they weren’t asking a question.”

“Not being able to hear what someone is saying, so you say ‘what?’ Then they say it again but you STILL can’t hear them so you just laugh and say ‘yeah’ and pray they weren’t asking a question.” — Redditor raisethecurtain

“You both are waiting for the other one to leave.”

“Having to poop with people in the stalls next to you ... And knowing you both are waiting for the other one to leave so you can poop in peace. — Redditor numberfourbackinshow

Mistletoe Before and After

It can be sad to think about all the animals in the world who are in need of a loving home.

Luckily, there are plenty of shelters that are dedicated to helping these pets get adopted.

For this story, we decided to focus on cats who have found their happily ever after. We reached out to both individuals and animal shelters, asking them to share some success stories.

Keep scrolling for some before and after shots that are sure to make your day.

Hardy had been abused and tortured for weeks before someone who claimed to have found the cat wandering around brought him to animal control.

Alley Cat Rescue Inc. saved Hardy and helped rehabilitate him. He now lives in a loving home with a couple who both work in the veterinary field.

Lefty struggles with a goopy eye and an autoimmune disorder known as "pillow paw" that causes a cat's paw pads to become swollen and cracked.

Luckily, he was adopted by two volunteers at Purrfect Pals Cat Sanctuary and Adoption Centers in January of 2016, who are plenty cat savvy and will make for the perfect caretakers for little Lefty.

When Lady was first adopted in November of last year, she was both underweight and terrified. She spent two weeks hiding from her new owners under the bathroom sink.

Now, her adopters describe her as "cuddly and confident."

8 signs your partner is gaslighting you

gaslighting

  • Gaslighting is a psychologically abusive form of manipulation that occurs in dating and relationships.
  • When someone is gaslighting you, they exert power over you and make you think you’ve lost your ability to think, remember, and rationalize.
  • There are several key signs to watch out for. Here’s how to spot it if your partner is gaslighting you.

There are so many dating terms these days, it’s hard to keep up. Some may be more popular than others, such as ghosting — disappearing on the person you’re seeing without a trace — while others may be more dangerous.

Gaslighting falls into the latter category, since it’s a manipulative tool some people use in their romantic relationships.

“Gaslighting is a psychological tactic used to make another person believe they are losing their mind,” Joshua Klapow, a clinical psychologist and host of “The Kurre and Klapow Show,” told Business Insider. “It is literally a manipulative attempt at making another person think they are losing their ability to think, remember, and be rational.”

According to Vox, the term “gaslighting” became popular with the 1944 movie “Gaslight,” which was based on the 1938 play by Patrick Hamilton. In the psychological thriller, a husband, Gregory (Charles Boyer) “gaslights” his wife, Paula (Ingrid Bergman).

Throughout the movie, she questions her sanity, and her husband convinces her she’s acting strange. For example, when Paula notices that the gaslights in the home have been dimmed, Gregory lies and tells her she’s imagining things, which makes her believe she’s going crazy.

Here are some signs of gaslighting to watch out for.

SEE ALSO: I'm a serial 'ghoster' in dating — here's why I do it

1. They deny things you’ve said or done.

Being forgetful sometimes happens to everybody, but gaslighters take “forgetfulness” to a whole other level.

“If your partner begins to call into question things you have said or done by saying they didn’t happen, it’s a sign they may be gaslighting you,” Klapow said. “Or they will make statements about things you have said or done that you know you didn’t do. You may temporarily ask yourself ‘Could this be true?’ or ‘Did I really not say or do that?’”

He said to pay attention to how you are feeling if something doesn’t seem right.

2. They use manipulative language.

Manipulative language is another sign of gaslighting. “Gaslighting is very commonly found in those with narcissistic-personality disorder” relationship therapist Carolyn Cole, told Business Insider.

“It often occurs in abusive relationships, as it is a form of emotional abuse. For example, if you don’t do something they want you to do, they may say something like, ‘Mhmm, you know, if you really loved me, you would do this for me,’” she said.

3. They project what they’re doing onto their partner.

If the gaslighter is guilty of something, they may project it on to their partner instead.

“A common one is if they are cheating,” Cole said. “If so, they will continually accuse their partner of being unfaithful. Maybe the partner has to stay late at work and the gaslighter will say, in an aggressive tone, something like, ‘Sure, you had to stay late at work. Who were you with? Who is she/he?’”

Millennials skip breakfast, Baby Boomers read the paper, and other ways generations differ in their morning routines

  • Generation Z, Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers begin their days in different ways.
  • Some of the differences in their morning routines can be attributed to age. Baby Boomers are increasingly retiring, so they tend to wake up later than working folks.
  • But some of it can be attributed to generational differences. Millennials, for instance, are the most likely to get their news from online.

Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers are very different — and their differences are apparent from the moment they wake up.

A poll from MSN surveyed Americans on their morning routines. It then used machine learning and big data, such as the census, to model how a representative sample of the US would have responded. It's as accurate as a traditional scientific survey, MSN said.

Some of the differences in their morning routines can be attributed to age.

Baby Boomers are increasingly retiring, so they tend to wake up later than the working population. Nearly a third of them wake up after 7 a.m., compared to 15% of those aged below 65.

Older age also correlates with healthier mornings. Those aged 65 and up tend to exercise and eat breakfast — two recommended components of any morning routine.

Some discrepancies are also unsurprising, considering generational trends. Millennials, for instance, are the most likely to get their news online, while 13% of Baby Boomers read the paper every morning. (Just 1% of 20-somethings say they read the morning paper.)

Here's how the generations differ in their sunrise habits.

Adults aged 64 and under are more likely to lay out their outfits the night before.

Of those younger than 65, 85% wake up before 7 a.m. That drops to 68% once folks reach retirement age.

The older you are, the more likely you prioritize breakfast. Two-thirds of young adults never or seldom eat breakfast.

8 signs you're better with money than you think

miley cyrus money cash dollars pop star happy

Financial stability can be an intimidating proposition, especially if you've only felt like an actual adult for a short period of time (or you're still waiting for that feeling to kick in). Regardless of exactly how much money you're actually making, there might be some fairly subtle cues that you're actually more financially stable than you might have thought. If you're doing some of these things or keep an eye on these sorts of numbers, those might be good indications that you're better off than you think.

1. You know your credit score — and understand how it works.

If you don't know what your credit score is, it's important that you find out. Denise Winston, a financial expert, former banker, and the founder and CEO of Money Starts Here, said that you should think of your credit score as your financial GPA because it gives employers, landlords, and others an idea of how financially secure you really are.

Doing things that will help you improve your credit score, as well as regularly keeping an eye on what it is (and how successful your efforts are), can help you feel more in charge of your financial future and might mean that you're already more financially stable than you think you are.

2. You live within your means.

It sounds almost too simple, but living within your means, not spending more than you make, is also an indication that you're financially stable, author and investor Anna Belov, told INSIDER.

"Financial stability can be defined by how long one can survive for, should they lose their job, without sacrificing much of their current lifestyle," she explained. If you're living relatively modestly and following a general budget that allows you to live according to your income, that likely means that you'd be OK if you didn't have the same paycheck coming in any longer.

3. You automatically save for retirement.

Some young adults don't see a need to save for retirement because it feels like a faraway prospect, but it's super important, and people who are financially stable are definitely doing this.

"The commitment to automatic savings through employer-sponsored retirement plans or directly from bank accounts is one of the first steps to financial freedom,"Adam Holt, a former financial advisor and founder of Asset-Map, told INSIDER. "Good habits of forced savings, or ‘paying oneself first' in the short-term doesn't seem rewarding but has long-term financial rewards."
