10 myths about being vegan that you should stop believing

eating strawberries

Being vegan is a huge life decision that more and more Americans are making. There’s been a rise in veganism from 1% of the US population to 6% in just three years, according to a recent study. But despite its growing popularity, there are still a lot of things about veganism people don’t understand.

If you spend any time online, you’ll see memes depicting vegans as pretentious, their food as bland and tasteless, and non-experts warning about the dangers of the diet. To put it bluntly, vegans have gotten a bad rap that they don’t necessarily deserve. Even Natalie Portman has recently tried to debunk some of the most egregious myths about the lifestyle she’s chosen.

If you’re looking to understand veganism more, or if you’re thinking about going vegan yourself, there are some key things you need to know about the lifestyle. To start, here are 10 myths about veganism that you need to stop believing.

Veganism and vegetarianism are the same thing.

Vegetarians don’t consume meat products, but will usually consume dairy and eggs — products the animal didn’t have to die for. Vegans, on the other hand, abstain from any and all products that come from animals and instead follow a fully plant-based diet. They’ll often carry that same dedication to products other than food. If you’re considering a shift towards a plant-based diet, it’s best to start vegetarian and work your way towards vegan.

People become vegans just to act better than other people.

There are a variety of reasons someone might become vegan, like a concern for animal welfare, a desire to do their part to help the environment, or an interest in a healthier lifestyle overall. And while vegans may also be outspoken about the environment or animals, it’s illogical to think they would make such an extreme choice about the way they live their life purely to get a feeling of moral superiority.

Being vegan is expensive.

If you’re looking purely at processed faux meat or prepackaged foods, then vegan foods can seem expensive, but the same can be said of prepared foods in any variety.

When you instead look at some of the staples of a vegan diet — rice, legumes, vegetables, and fruit — the price tags drop pretty dramatically. I compared the prices of several items at my local grocery store to get a feel for whether this myth held any weight. I found a pound of dry black beans were $1.29, while a pound of chicken breast was $2.09/lb and a pound of ground beef was $3.99.

Of course, it's worth noting that food accessibility and pricing varies based on your region and how expensive it is comes down to what exactly you're eating. Still, price doesn't necessarily need to be an inhibitor to going vegan.

And, whether you look for a spot with an element of adventure, peace and quiet, or you simply don't like your towel to be too close to a stranger, many of them fly under-the-radar to tourists despite their spectacular beauty.

Jet-setters in our own office also contributed. Together, their choices don't disappoint.

From a red sand beach in Maui to a sandy spot in Thailand inhabited entirely by monkeys, scroll down for a list of 100 under-the-radar beaches everyone should visit in their lifetime.

Furore, Italy.

"This little hidden beach is off the beaten path, but expect many locals to be frolicking in the waters around the Amalfi Coast," said James Asquith, the youngest person to travel to every country.

"The tiny strip of sand is wedged between a gigantic Fjord and you can get a fantastic view down from the nearby coastal road bridge. Don’t expect beach shacks or cafes but prepare yourself for a quintessential Italian summer experience."

Red Sand Beach, Maui, Hawaii, USA.

"Continuing with the colour theme and unique views, welcome to Red Sand Beach in Maui," Asquith said. "Caused by lava flows this time, instead of the dark volcanic rock in the neighbouring Big Island, this beach not only attracts some great wildlife but also is self-contained by rustic-looking rocks and vegetation."

Punalu'u Beach, The Big Island, Hawaii, USA.

This is "not your regular beach," according to Asquith. "This secluded stretch of sand is completely black," he said. "Caused by crushed volcanic rock particles and ash over millions of years, at first you may think the black sand looks ugly compared to traditional beaches, you will soon come to see the true and unique beauty of this beach, along with some pretty cool pictures for Instagram too!"

2 former Clarks and Allen Edmonds employees left their jobs and launched a startup that makes luxury dress shoes the average guy can afford — all under $250

Moral Code

  • Moral Code is a relatively new startup specializing in premium dress shoes and accessories for the modern gentleman.
  • Founded by two veteran footwear industry professionals with over 50 years of experience, Moral Code is taking a completely different approach to men's footwear with a vertically integrated, direct-to-consumer business model.
  • I tested several shoes and accessories and they're all consistently impressive. The quality and craftsmanship are that of much more expensive brands, which makes Moral Code a luxury brand that the average person can afford.

As the foundation to any impressive outfit, a man's shoes say a lot about his style and character. Dressing professionally is all about looking polished and put-together, but finding shoes that personify that can be difficult — especially if you're on a budget. Most times you're met with subpar inexpensive options or overpriced high-end ones. Brands that can successfully balance fine quality and affordable prices are few and far between — but Moral Code, a new startup designed for the modern gentleman, is filling that gap.

Co-founded by Mark Kohlenberg and Laura Engerman, Moral Code brings together over 50 years of collective experience, having worked for brands like Allen Edmonds, Florsheim, and Clarks. The company launched less than a year ago in August 2017, and even with valuable insight from some of the biggest brands in men's footwear, it's taking a different completely approach to its process.

In contrast to the brands that the founders came from, Moral Code uses a direct-to-consumer business model. When you buy a pair of Moral Code shoes, you're paying for the cost of premium materials, some of the company's overhead, and of course a bit of profit. However, since there isn't an astounding retail markup like that of shoes sold in department stores, you get a lot more value for your money, and more savings, too.

To stand out in a market flooded with seemingly identical shoes, Moral Code puts a tremendous amount of energy into designs that showcase a close attention to detail that style-conscious consumer can appreciate. "When you look at some of the 'traditional' men’s footwear brands, they have not kept up with today’s consumer," said Moral Code CEO and co-founder Mark Kohlenberg. "The styling is dated, the silhouettes are tired, and comfort is nonexistent. We integrated unique styling, bespoke materials, and incredible comfort technology into our footwear."

Moral Code

Designing fresh takes on iconic dress shoe styles isn't the only attribute that separates Moral Code from other brands. The startup prides itself on creating truly premium goods, and that's executed by using a vertically integrated manufacturing process and handcrafting everything at a state-of-the-art facility in India. Instead of outsourcing parts of the shoe-making process, vertical integration between the brand's own tannery, cutting and stitching operations, and manufacturing facility ensures a high level of quality every step of the way.

"India really has positioned themselves as a base of high-quality production, whereas [countries like] China have been known as a high volume producer of inexpensive footwear," Kohlenberg told Business Insider. "The craftsmanship, creativity, and beauty that our teams put into our products really set us apart."

While Moral Code's emphasis is on high-end footwear, they've been able to apply the same level of design creativity and craftsmanship to an assortment of fine leather goods. To complement the growing line of shoes, the brand also sells backpacks, briefcases, Dopp kits, wallets, glasses cases, watch boxes, and much more.

moral code

With Kohlenberg and Engerman's combined resumé, building a menswear brand suitable for conventional retail outlets was definitely possible, but was never the goal for Moral Code. They took everything they knew about the industry and went a completely different route, which effectively created a brand that's higher quality, more stylish, and better priced than its department store counterparts. "It honestly comes down to two things — building a relationship with the end consumer and enabling us to provide an extraordinary price point relative to the value of the product," explained Kohlenberg.

Kohlenberg attributes his brand as "the best of timeless constructions for an affordable price" and that's a claim I can attest to. I had the opportunity to test two pairs of shoes — the August double monk strap in cognac and the Reed wingtip chukka in black, as well as two bags — the Atticus briefcase in brown leather and the Desmond backpack in black leather. It's been a few months since I was introduced to the products and they've all held up extremely well. They're comfortable, fashionable, and each item looks and feels much more expensive than they actually are.

Read on to check out my full thoughts on each product I tried, along with several other great styles from Moral Code.

The August Double Monk Strap

Moral Code August Double Monk Strap, $198

The Moral Code August is a very attractive take on the classic double monk strap dress shoe. My first impression was how well made they are. They're made of premium calfskin leather done in a really nice cognac color. The attention to detail is showcased through the stylish brogue pattern, silver buckles, and leather-lined padded insoles. I enjoy wearing the Moral Code August because they're comfortable right out of the box and more unique than a traditional pair of oxfords.

The Reed Wing-Tip Chukka Boot

Moral Code Reed Wing-Tip Chukka Boot, $228

The Moral Code Reed is special for several reasons — one being that it features the mid-height cut of a Chukka Boot, but all the elegance of a classic wing-tip dress shoe. During the fall and winter months, I almost exclusively wear boots, so most of my dress shoe stay tucked away. With the Reed, I was able to pull off a more formal look without sacrificing warmth or comfort.

The Atticus Briefcase

Moral Code Atticus Briefcase, $498

Handcrafted from premium leather, this is the type of bag that will last a lifetime. It comes  in naturally distressed brown leather or premium black calf leather and is styled to fit perfectly with your business professional attire. More often than not, I prefer backpacks, but the Moral Code Atticus is a briefcase that I thoroughly enjoy carrying. It's spacious and has plenty of compartments for organization. You can comfortably fit a very large laptop and charger, multiple files, a water bottle, pens, keys, and more inside. A leather shoulder strap is also included for those that prefer to carry it over the shoulder. While this bag might not be for you if you're looking for lightweight and compact commuter briefcase, it's ideal for guys interested in a traditional look who don't mind the extra bit of weight from thick leather and hardware.

Sacha Baron Cohen will return to television on Sunday at 10 p.m. with the premiere of his new Showtime series, "Who Is America?"

14 years after "Da Ali G Show" ended its two-season run on HBO, Cohen's new series for Showtime is billed to follow a similar format of covert, satirical interviews with unsuspecting guests.

Cohen first previewed the show last week with a cryptic Twitter video that featured Donald Trump mocking Cohen.

On Monday, Showtime confirmed the series will be called "Who Is America?," and Cohen teased an interview with former vice president Dick Cheney.

On Tuesday, Sarah Palin wrote a Facebook post saying that Cohen had "duped" her and her daughter into participating in an interview for the show, which looks like it will feature a number of other prominent guests, including Bernie Sanders.

Here's everything we know about Cohen's new Showtime series:

SEE ALSO: Sarah Palin says she was 'duped' into participating in a sham interview with Sacha Baron Cohen, alleges she was dropped off at the wrong airport

The seven-episode series has been more than a year in the making

On Monday, Cohen released a promotional clip on Twitter announcing the debut of a show that had been more than a year in the making.

"Imagine if Sacha Baron Cohen had been undercover secretly filming a new show for a year," read the text of the clip.

Showtime officially announced on Tuesday that the series, titled "Who Is America?," will have a seven episode first season.

Per a release, the show, written and directed by Cohen, "will explore the diverse individuals, from the infamous to the unknown across the political and cultural spectrum, who populate our unique nation."

It will feature new characters from Cohen

Showtime previewed "Who Is America?" in a clip this week that teased images of new character disguises from Cohen.

Cohen previously said that he would abandon the characters that originated from "Da Ali G Show," including Borat, Ali G, and Brüno — each of which received its own feature film in the years following the HBO show's final season.

We know that at least one of Cohen's characters for the new series will resemble a "disabled US Veteran," according to Sarah Palin's account of her interview for the show.

In a release, Showtime described the show's "lead character" as "shameless,""unhinged" and "cold-blooded."

Dick Cheney signs a "waterboard kit" in his interview for the show

In a teaser video Cohen released on Monday, an off-screen Cohen interviews former vice president Dick Cheney.

In the clip, Cohen asks Cheney to sign a "waterboard kit," which Cheney does with a smile and says, "That's the first time I ever signed a waterboard."

Another promotional clip released this week showed Cheney facing the camera and saying, "I hope you'll tune in next week for an interview with me."

10 vacation mistakes that could be costing you hundreds of dollars

beach ocean water couple surfing surf

Contrary to popular belief, a vacation does not have to put a huge dent in your bank account. In fact, you might be making mistakes that are making the cost of your vacation unnecessarily high.

We rounded up some easy ways to avoid these pitfalls and save cash on your next vacation.

When you wait too long to book a flight, prices can go up.

When it comes to snagging the best deals on airfare, philosophies range from purchasing on certain days of the week to scouring the web for error fares. But the one thing we know for sure is that it’s all about timing. And the longer you wait to book, chances are prices are going to skyrocket.

Travel search engine Kayak estimated that domestic flight prices drop three months to seven weeks before the desired date. A survey by online travel agency Cheapair.com found that an average of 47 days in advance was ideal for finding a lower fare. The same study revealed that travelers who book within 14 to seven days of a flight pay $111 to $174 more. It’s not an exact science, but it’s fair to say the early bird catches the worm.

Foreign transaction fees add up.

It’s wise to carry a card instead of a wad of cash during international travel but watch out for those dreaded foreign transaction fees. Credit card companies typically charge up to 3% to process transactions made overseas, according to Credit Karma. Depending on the length of your trip and number of purchases, this could quickly add up. Fortunately, there are credit cards available with no fees attached.

Watch out for cell phone roaming charges.

It’s hard to disconnect from the world especially when you’re on vacay. But that doesn’t mean it needs to cost you a pretty penny. Instead of racking up roaming charges, get a sim card. Most newer phones are easy to unlock, allowing your freedom to swap to a more economical prepaid sim card overseas. You can also use your phone on WiFi. Take advantage of free apps like WhatsApp, Skype, Viber, and FaceTime to keep in touch with loved ones for less.

Kylie Jenner Met Gala 2018

Kim Kardashian West, might be the most prominent of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, but Kylie Jenner is by far the richest

According to the most recent issue of Forbes — which features the 20-year-old on the cover with the heading, "America's Women Billionaires"— Jenner's set to become the youngest self-made billionaire ever with a current net worth of $900 million.

This is almost three times the net worth of Kardashian West, who is the next-wealthiest of the family with a net worth of $350 million.

Jenner, who will turn 21 in August, has built up a cosmetics empire, starred alongside her family in "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" as well as in her own spin-off show "Life of Kylie," started a clothing line with her sister, and made millions promoting products on Instagram.

Here are all the ways Jenner makes her money.

Her cosmetics company, Kylie Cosmetics, sold more than $630 million worth of makeup in just two years.

Jenner owns 100% of Kylie Cosmetics and has personally made an estimated $60 million from the company after taxes, according to Forbes.

Much of Jenner's work on Kylie Cosmetics happens on social media.

The manufacturing, packaging, and sales are all outsourced to private companies, and the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch and Kylie's mother, Kris Jenner, handles the financial and public relations aspects of the brand, Forbes reported.

That leaves Jenner to promote her products on Instagram and other platforms, which she does frequently.

"Social media is an amazing platform," Jenner, who has 110 million followers on Instagram, told Forbes. "I have such easy access to my fans and my customers."

Kylie Cosmetics is on track to be a billion-dollar company by 2022, according to Fortune.

She makes millions starring on "Keeping Up With The Kardashians."

In October 2017, the Kardashian-Jenners scored a $150 million joint deal to renew their contract for "Keeping Up With The Kardashians," according to The Blast.

We don't know exactly how the millions are split up between the family, but Jenner's exact cut must be impressive nonetheless.

On top of that, Jenner started starring in her own spin-off show, "Life of Kylie," in 2017.

She has profitable endorsement deals with Puma and many other brands.

Jenner has a lucrative endorsement deal with Puma, according to Forbes. She frequently endorses multiple other brands on Instagram, including Fashion Nova, Quay Australia eyewear, SugarBearHair vitamins— and the list goes on.

thai rescue 2x1

After surviving 17 days inside a flooded cave in northern Thailand, the final members of a boys soccer team and their coach were rescued on Tuesday.

An international team of hundreds of rescuers from around the world pulled the final five stranded members of the team — four boys and their coach — on Tuesday evening local time, ending a three-day rescue operation.

Here is a timeline that shows exactly how the Thai soccer team rescue unfolded.

SEE ALSO: Meet the 25-year-old coach of the Thai soccer team who was trapped in a cave for 17 days — here's what could happen to him now that they've all been rescued

SEE ALSO: ALIVE: All 12 boys and their coach are safely out of the Thai caves after a 17-day ordeal that gripped the world

Saturday, June 23: 12 members of a Thai boys soccer team and their coach get trapped in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave by torrential rain.

The boys were apparently performing a sort of initiation ceremony in the cave, and got stuck when the cave flooded, blocking their way out.

Park officials discover the boys' bikes at the entrance to the cave, and worried parents call the police when they realize their children are missing.

A major search and rescue operation is launched to find them.

Monday, July 2: The Thai soccer team and their coach are found showing "signs of life" after being trapped for nine days in the flooded cave.

Nine days later, divers find all 12 boys and their coach, huddled together above the lapping water in the cave — 2.5 miles from the entrance.

The coach of the soccer team, Ekkapol Chantawong, taught his players how to meditate so they could stay calm and conserve energy while they waited to be rescued. Divers found the team meditating when they arrived at the cave.

Getting into the cave wasn't easy — and getting the team out will be even harder.

Thai Navy SEAL divers and rescue workers entered a narrow passageway after passing through a key chamber where high, murky waters had previously blocked their progress.

In the course of their search, rising water filled sections of the cave, repeatedly forcing them to withdraw for safety reasons.

When water levels dropped, the divers went forward with a more methodical approach, deploying a rope line and extra oxygen supplies along the way.

10 life-saving first aid hacks everyone should know

$
0

first aid kit cold compress ice pack

Would you be able to keep a cool head if you or someone you know needed first aid? It can be difficult to be prepared for every sort of emergency situation, but having some basic knowledge is always helpful.

Learn these quick tips to help save a life or to help keep you and your loved ones more prepared in case of emergency.

Download a first aid app.

There's really an app for everything. From cuts to CPR to broken bones, these apps have what you need for assistance in many emergency situations. A few of the most popular first aid phone apps available for iOS and Android are First Aid by the American Red Cross (there's even a pet version!), Army First Aid, and Pocket First Aid & CPR.

These apps aren't just for show, either. With the help of a first aid app, a man survived being under rubble for over 60 hours after the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

And if you'd like to help those in need or more easily find a trained bystander, you can also download Pulsepoint, an app which connects CPR-trained individuals to nearby emergencies.

Remove splinters with glue.

A splinter might not seem like the most life-threatening condition, but unremoved splinters may embed themselves deeper in the skin and cause infection. Instead of resorting to the dreaded tweezers, simply place a thin layer of craft glue on the area of skin with the splinter, let dry, peel off, and voilà. The splinter will be easily lifted from the skin.

Learn hands-only CPR.

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can be performed in many situations, including cardiac arrest or drowning. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), even knowing the basics of hands-only CPR (no mouth-to-mouth or defibrillator use) can save a life.

"If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of any tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute,"The AHA website states. That's about the tempo of "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees or "Yeah!" by Usher. Also according to the AHA: immediate hands-only CPR can double or triple a person's chance of survival.

Getting fully certified in CPR is a great idea, too. To find a CPR certification course near you, check out the AHA's course finder.

China just slammed massive tariffs on $34 billion worth of US goods — here's what will get hit

trump xi trade war china us

  • President Donald Trump and China are engaged in a nasty trade war, with both sides hitting the other with large tariffs on a variety of goods.
  • In response to Trump's tariffs on Friday, China released a tariff list that will apply to $34 billion worth of US exports to China.
  • The list of goods affected by the tariffs includes soybeans, pork, fish, orange juice, and whiskey.
  • Here's a rundown of the major goods that will be subject to the new tariffs.

After months of threats and negotiations, the trade war between the US and China officially launched on Friday with both countries imposing tit-for-tat tariffs.

Soon after the imposition of US President Donald Trump's 25% tariff on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods, China's Ministry of Commerce struck back with tariffs of equal size on some US exports to China.

It said the first $34 billion would be followed up by another $16 billion once the US's second wave of tariffs goes into effect in a few weeks.

While Trump's tariffs mostly target industrial and tech goods, China is focusing heavily on agricultural products from the US — a move that is likely to not only cause pain to Trump's political supporters, but leave US farmers with fewer options to divert their crops.

For instance, a US cherry producer told The Washington Post this week that a shipment to China was diverted for further inspection and went bad, resulting in a loss for the US firm. While it's unclear whether the delay was due to the trade fight, it highlights the danger for farmers caused by increased protectionism.

In response to China's retaliation, Trump on Tuesday released a list of another $200 billion worth of Chinese goods that could get hit by an additional 10% tariff. China's Commerce Ministry promised a response were Trump to move forward with the additional measures.

Using China's product list and the international harmonized system for identifying goods, we picked out the major US products that will get slammed by the new tariff. Check out the list below:

trader joe's 4

  • Trader Joe's jobs have a sterling reputation in the world of retail.
  • Glassdoor named the grocery chain as one of the best places in the US to work in 2018.
  • Business Insider scoured the web to find out what crew members like about working at Trader Joe's.

Trader Joe's jobs have a solid reputation — no small feat in the often grueling world of retail work.

This year, Glassdoor named the grocery chain with a cult-like following as one of the best places to work in the US. That's not a fluke. Trader Joe's also made the list in 2017, 2013, 2012, and 2011.

"If you want it to be a positive experience, it will be a positive experience," a Trader Joe's crew member wrote in a 2017 Reddit AMA.

Business Insider spoke to employees and trawled Reddit and Quora to find out what people like best about working at the grocery chain.

Here's what Trader Joe's crew members had to say:

The sense of freedom

Two Trader Joe's crew members who spoke to Business Insider emphasized the sense of freedom and flexibility the chain fosters.

"There's no script," one crew member from New York told Business Insider. "As long as I make sure the customer is having a great time, and I'm emphasizing Trader Joe's values, I can talk to people about whatever I want."

The employee added that they had never had a manager tell them to avoid speaking about certain topics with customres.

"They all love that I'm engaged," the crew member said. "I've discussed politics, religion, movies, philosophy, parenting, and so many other things, all while bagging people's groceries. It's the best."

And, according to one California-based employee who spoke to Business Insider, that sense of flexibility also manifests itself in the chain's scheduling procedures.

"The scheduling is flexible and school-friendly," the crew member told Business Insider.

A strong set of benefits

"As far as benefits are concerned, TJ's does quite well," former crew member Devon Hammer wrote in a 2012 Quora post.

He cited the chain's "good system for vacation pay" and comprehensive health insurance plans, in particular.

Trader Joe's insurance plans come out to $75 a month, according to the chain's website. The store also offers a retirement plan, contributing "10% of annual salary to eligible crew members" and paid time off.

A California-based crew member told Business Insider that the store's benefits and "great hourly wages" were a huge draw.

A focus on boosting morale

"I could list off the several little things done day-to-day in order to keep morale high, but that in and of itself is a big contributor to the attitude of the employees," crew member Alden Aust wrote on Quora. "The company knows their reputation and bends over backwards to maintain that via free food, friendly managers and fringe benefits."

The best American Express cards

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network.

best amex card

The Insider Pick:

  • Although the credit card and rewards space has become a bit crowded, American Express remains a popular and prestigious company, offering compelling and competitive products.

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express is the best product offered, with generous benefits, valuable perks, and solid rewards that more than make up for its high annual fee — for example, I got more than $2,000 of value from the card my first year.

American Express offers credit and charge card products for just about every lifestyle need. Although American Express is famous for its travel connections and premium experiential offerings, it also offers credit and charge card products with other advantages. Whether you're looking for cash back, frequent flyer miles, travel insurance, purchase protections, extra points on groceries, access to airport lounges, or more.

If you're looking for the best Amex card for you, here are the ones you should consider.

Keep in mind that, unless it's otherwise noted in the card description, we're focusing on benefits, perks, and rewards that make these cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which can far outweigh the value of any rewards.

When you're working to earn credit-card rewards, it's important to practice financial discipline, like paying your balances off in full each month, making payments on time, and not spending more than you can afford to pay back — or spending more than you would otherwise. Basically, with a few rare exceptions, you should treat your credit card like a debit card.

Here are our top picks for the best Amex cards:

Read on in the slides below to see which Amex card is right for you.

SEE ALSO: The best credit card rewards, bonuses, and perks

The best Amex overall

Why you'll love it: The Platinum Card offers incredibly valuable benefits, perks, and rewards, and is a must-have for any frequent traveler.

Welcome offer: 60,000 points (after spending $5,000 in the first three months)

At $550, the Platinum Card has one of the highest annual fees of any mainstream card. However, as long as you're willing to float it up front, you can get way more value back from the card — for instance, I got more than $2,000 in value from it during my first year.

The Platinum Card earns American Express Membership Rewards. These points can be redeemed for travel, merchandise, or more. However, the best option is to transfer them to a frequent flyer partner.

The card offers 5x points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline, as well as flights and pre-paid hotels booked through Amex Travel. It earns 1x point on everything else. It also offers up to $200 in Uber credits each cardmember year, as well as $200 in airline credits each calendar year — if you open the card mid-year, it's possible to earn that twice in your first cardmember year.

The card comes with a number of perks, including access to more than 1,200 airport lounges within the Priority Pass network, as well as Delta Sky Clubs and proprietary American Express Centurion Lounges. It also offers complimentary gold elite status with Marriott, Starwood, and Hilton hotels, as well as up to $100 per year in shopping credits at Saks Fifth Avenue.

The annual fee may turn a lot of people off from this card, but if you can get past that, the return it offers is tough to beat.

Pros: Valuable perks, useful benefits, possible to get outsized value

Cons: High annual fee — even though you can make it back, and more, you'll still have to float that at first

The best premium Amex for earning rewards

Why you'll love it: The Premier Rewards Gold has a lower annual fee than the Platinum Card, but it offers better rewards and solid benefits.

If the Platinum Card's annual fee is too much to stomach, but you still want a card that offers compelling travel rewards, the Premier Rewards Gold card, or "PRG," is a compelling option. While it doesn't offer the same flashy perks and outsized value, it has a great points-earning structure to make up for that, and a lower annual fee of $195, waived the first year.

The card earns 3x points on airfare, 2x points at US supermarkets, gas stations, and restaurants, and 1x points on everything else. Travel website The Points Guy assigns a value of 1.9¢ to every Membership Reward point, so using that, you'll earn a generous 5.7% back on flights, 3.8% on groceries, dining, and gas, and 1.9% on everything else.

Points can be redeemed the same way as with the Platinum Card, and they can be combined with any other points-earning Amex card.

The PRG also offers a $100 airline fee credit each calendar year, which, like the Platinum Card's, can be double-dipped.

The card has a number of other benefits, including access to benefits through Amex Travel's exclusive Hotel Collection, travel insurance, purchase protection, Amex Offers, a complimentary ShopRunner membership, and more. Check out our full review of the PRG for more details.

Keep in mind that it's possible to be targeted for a higher welcome bonus.

Pros: Great rewards earning structure, useful benefits, lower annual fee than the Platinum Card.

Cons: Relatively high annual fee compared to some other cards.

The best Amex for families

Why you'll love it: The EveryDay Preferred earns bonus points at US grocery stores and gas stations, making it a strong product for families and others who spend a lot in these categories.

Welcome offer: 15,000 points (after spending $1,000 in the first three months)

The EveryDay Preferred is a strong option for anyone looking for a Membership Rewards card, but who's not interested in a premium card like the Platinum or PRG. It also has a strong points-earning scheme and a lower annual fee of $95.

The card earns 3x points per dollar spent at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 each year — 1x point per dollar after that), 2x points at US gas stations, and 1x point on everything else. You can also get 2x points on reservations made through Amex Travel.

Best of all, if you make 30 or more purchases in a billing period, you'll earn a 50% bonus. That means that those little $3 and $4 charges for things like coffee or a snack can help you get a ton of points quickly.

The card also offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months, before switching to a variable 14.74–24.74% APR. If you have a big purchase coming up and want some time to pay it off, but don't want to pay interest fees, this is a great option.

Pros: Low annual fee, strong rewards structure, earns valuable points, 50% bonus when you make at least 30 transactions in a billing period

Cons: Relatively low welcome offer

Taylor Swift rounds out the list this year at No. 60, with an estimated net worth of $320 million. That's $60 million more than the minimum net worth required to make the list in 2017.

These newlyweds transformed a grain silo into a gorgeous tiny home — and they say it’s done wonders for their relationship

SILO WINQUIST 6246

One Phoenix couple put their own spin on "tiny living" when they transformed a 366-square-foot grain silo into their home.

Among the challenges of adapting the metal structure was when the pair, Shauna Thibault, a stylist and boutique owner, and architect Christoph Kaiser, moved into the mini dwelling as newlyweds.

"It makes you confront issues more and it brings you together — there's camaraderie there that I don't think would be otherwise,"Kaiser told Zillow, which featured Kaiser and Thibault's unique home in a company blog post.

Here's their story:

Kaiser originally bought the silo, which is designed to hold grain in bulk, off of Craigslist as a means to store his garden tools. He and Thibault eventually changed their minds about its purpose and embarked on an 18-month long project to fashion it into the tiny home of their dreams.

And tiny it is: The 366-square-foot home doesn't have any rooms, just an upstairs bed loft and a downstairs, which includes the kitchen and a bathroom. The two moved into the pint-sized abode as newlyweds a couple of years ago.

Kaiser said spending their first year of marriage in such a small space afforded the pair an intimacy that they may not have had had they lived in a bigger home. For them, tiny living simplified life. "We affectionately called it the 'pressure cooker' for a while," he told Zillow.

10 vegan menu items you need to try at your favorite fast-food chains

Chick-fil-A.

Eating out as a vegan can difficult. Salads get boring and sandwiches stuffed with lettuce and not much else are bland and unappetizing. Luckily, popular fast food chains like Taco Bell and Domino’s have started catering to a vegan-specific audience. Although the options are limited, this is a delicious step in the right direction.

We rounded up some of the vegan options you can take advantage of at your favorite chains.

Chipotle’s Sofritas are exactly what the Tex-Mex fast food chain needed.

While Chipotle has an assortment of vegan options, including their fajita vegetables and yummy beans, the chain’s Sofritas is the meat-alternative vegans didn’t know they needed. Wrap your sofritas in a warm flour tortilla and top with plenty of guac and salsa for the ultimate vegan lunch.

Taco Bell knows how to cater to vegans.

While their commercials might tout a plethora of meat items, eating vegan at Taco Bell isn’t difficult. In fact, the chain released its own guide to eating vegan at its establishments, and it all sounds pretty good. My favorite? The Crunchwrap Supreme — hold the beef, sour cream, and cheese, and request black beans instead.

Burger King’s fries are safe to eat!

Vegans rejoice because Burger King’s fries aren’t made with animal fat. In addition to having real fries, vegans can enjoy BK’s French Toast Sticks for breakfast and Dutch Apple Pie for dessert.
