WHERE ARE THEY NOW? The 1999 U.S. Women's National Team

Brandi Chastain Shirtless Championship

The 1999 Women's World Cup remains one of the most seminal sporting events in American history.

The United States Women's National Team, playing on home soil, in front of a packed crowd at the Rose Bowl in California, gave women's soccer a match for the ages against China, one that went all the way to penalty kicks. U.S. goalkeeper Briana Scurry came up with a crucial save on China's third penalty kick, clearing the way for Brandi Chastain to clinch the World Cup trophy with a successful penalty kick.

The image of Chastain celebrating on the field afterward has since become one of the most iconic in women's sports. And with Tuesday being the anniversary of the U.S. victory, now is the perfect time to look back on the women who participated in that legendary match.

Carla Overbeck was a defender and the captain of the 1999 team, as well as a seasoned veteran who had already won one Women's World Cup, in 1991. She made the first penalty kick.

Overbeck finished her career with over 150 caps for the U.S.W.N.T. is currently an Assistant Coach for the Duke Blue Devils Women's Soccer team.

10 cheap wines that will fool your friends into thinking you bought an expensive bottle

sparkling wine

If you’re a wine drinker, you know that a lot of restaurant wine lists and wine-shop selections cater to a deep-pocketed clientele. If you’re trying to drink high-quality stuff on a reasonable budget, it’s easy to feel like you’re fighting a losing battle.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. INSIDER spoke with a group of bartenders, wine servers, and beverage directors from across the country, all of whom offered personal-favorite bottles that ring in for 20 bucks or less.

Sangiovese is a great red.

The red Tuscan grape behind Italian-restaurant staples like Chianti and Brunello, Sangiovese produces wines with pointed acidity and ripe fruit flavor that pair beautifully with an giant bowl of pasta. Of course, these well-established wines often come at a steep price. According to Benjamin Appleby, sommelier at Abe & Louie’s in Boston, name recognition does a lot to inflate these bottle prices:

"In Tuscany, Brunello di Montalcino is king, and the price tag reflects that renown," Appleby told INSIDER. "However, there are many lesser known, and therefore less expensive, Sangiovese based wines from Tuscany and the surrounding regions that are absolutely delicious."

But no need to worry: if you’re planning a romantic "Lady and the Tramp"-style spaghetti dinner (or just want something nice to drink with your delivery pizza), you can get in on the Sangiovese action without shelling out for high-end Super Tuscan.

Wanna try a Tuscan Sangiovese for less than a twenty? TryIl Poggione Rosso di Montalcino ($18.99), a particular favorite of Appleby’s. He calls it "complex but very approachable, with more fruit and less mustiness than its "big brother" Brunello. Rosso is intended to be a more casual drinking experience.  It's fresher, needs less aging, and doesn't require a long time in a decanter to open up."

Xinomavro might be a new favorite for you.

If you like the taste of Italian reds but want to try something a bit more under-the-radar, Xinomavro, a popular grape in Greece and Macedonia, may be just the thing for you. "If you like Nebbiolo, but you don’t feel like springing for a bottle of Barolo or Barbaresco, I recommend checking out Greece’s native Xinomavro. Greek wines are experiencing a renaissance of quality, and Xinomavro is a big part of the reason why. Medium in body, it still has a wonderful, mouth-watering acidity and plenty of tannic structure, making it a great food wine," raves Greg DeForest Campbell, wine server at Corkbuzz in New York City.

If you want to take Xinomavro for a trial run, its low price makes that an easy endeavor. DeForest Campbell suggests Thymiopoulos Young Vines Xinomavro Naoussa ($14.99), a well-balanced red with pointed acidity that pairs beautifully with late-summer BBQ eats.

Gamay is a light red.

A lightweight red varietal from the Burgundy region of France, Gamay is often compared to Pinot Noir both because they’re grown in similar areas and because they’re relatively-delicate red wines that pair equally well with a juicy lamb chop or a grilled fish. According to sommelier Tim Wallace of Stowe Mountain Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, you can find affordable bottles of Gamay from its home country of France or from newer plantings in the United States.

"Gamay is the grape that I want to drink every day.  The style of the wine can vary wildly, there are bright, light, fun, gluggable (or ‘glou glou’ in French slang) options all the way up to serious, single vineyard Cru options with everything delicious in between.  Traditionally hailing from Burgundy, Gamay is starting to see a surge of plantings in America with exciting results. When it comes to a fun, easy-drinking yet affordable everyday wine, you just can't go wrong with Gamay," Wallace explained.

Wallace considers Gamay grown in the Willamette Valley a particularly solid buy, and he’s partial to the Bow & Arrow Gamay ($18.99). "I absolutely love everything that winemaker Scott Frank makes, but I just keep reaching for another bottle of this beautiful wine time after time.  Everything Mr. Frank does is sourced from small, sustainably grown vineyards in the blue collar Willamette Valley. The liveliness in this bottle that comes from bright, mineral acidity and notes of bright berries lends itself to anything from slices of watermelon on the beach to my dad's famous barbecue grilled chicken. When it's 100 degrees outside, go ahead and drink it chilled and it's as refreshing as your favorite rose," Wallace told INSIDER.

12 gross things you didn't realize could be living on your body right now

Woman with Stomach ache

  • From your scalp to your toes, your body is covered in bacteria, fungi, viruses, and even microscopic animals.
  • Demodex mites can live on eyelashes and in eyebrow hair follicles.
  • Hands are constantly exposed to organisms from the outside, and every time you touch your face or scratch an itch you're moving those organisms from one part of the body to another.

No matter how much you shower, wash, scrub, soap, or brush, your body is a veritable jungle of trillions of tiny organisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and even microscopic animals.

Bacteria on your scalp

The most common scalp bacteria are Propionibacterium and Staphylococcus, and new research has found that which of these species is more dominant may determine whether or not you suffer from dandruff, as nearly half of all adults do. When there are many more Propionibacterium bacteria than Staphylococcus, the scalp is healthy. But a preponderance of Staphylococcus leads to dandruff. Now, of course, scientists need to develop shampoos that help keep these battling scalp bacteria in balance.

Critters in your eyelashes and eyebrows

Of all the microbes living in or on the body, the Demodex mites that live on eyelashes and in eyebrow hair follicles — along with hair follicles all over the body — might elicit the loudest "Ewwwwww's"! These teensy animals have long bodies and stumpy legs and they spend their entire life on your face or body hair. They sleep, eat, and even have sex there. But while they're rather disgusting to think about, the mites don't usually cause any problems unless they overpopulate or spark an allergic reaction. Then they can lead to skin conditions like rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis. Some people may think their eyes are just dry or irritated when the mites are actually responsible. The mites seem to like us more as we age, so while only about 20 percent of people under 20 have them, nearly all senior citizens do. Check out these 9 body parts that are as unique as your fingerprint.

Bugs on your face

Your skin is one of the body's most important defenses against outside threats, and the bacteria that live on the skin's surface are important sentries. Your skin's overall health is dependent on the balance between your own skin cells and the microbes that live on the surface — on average, about a trillion bacteria. Julie Segre, PhD, a principal investigator at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health, says that among the most common of these bacteria are Staphylococcus epidermidisStaphylococcus hominisCorynebacterium simulans, and Cornyebacterium accolens. "Basically, the healthy bacteria are filling all those little niches so that the more dangerous bacteria can't get a foothold onto the skin," says Segre.

6 hacks for waiting in line at Disney World

Mad Tea Party ride Disney World INSIDER

Planning a Disney World vacation is fun, but actually going on the trip? Even better. Unfortunately, there are a few things that can make your trip a little less than a dream come true, like dealing with crowds, hot temperatures, and of course, waiting in line. Even though waiting in line for at least some attractions is unavoidable, there are a few hacks you can use to make that part of your visit as short and easy as possible, because spending your day in line isn’t necessary to hit all the attractions you want to see, even in the summertime.

Heading to Walt Disney World soon? These hacks will help you spend more time having fun with your family and friends and less time waiting to hop on Space Mountain. With a little planning ahead of time, you can keep those valuable hours of your vacation to spend crossing off everything on your Disney to do list instead of entertaining cranky kids while you wait to meet Mickey.

Download the My Disney Experience app.

If you’re planning a visit to Disney World, even just for a day, the My Disney Experience app is a lifesaver. Before your trip, you can use it to make fastpass and dining reservations, link tickets to your Magicband, and manage your plans for your connected friends and family. And once you get there, when it comes to waiting in line, it’s essential.

You can check out the wait times for any ride in any of the four parks straight from the app, which means instead of running from Fantasyland to Adventureland to see if you can hop on Pirates of The Caribbean, you can check out the line first. It makes your entire trip so much simpler.

Make Fastpasses as early as possible.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Fastpass+ system, it’s pretty easy: If you have a linked ticket on the My Disney Experience app, you can make three Fastpass reservations per each day of your trip, as long as all three of those passes are in the same park. You can choose which rides you’d like and the time that works for you, and once you’ve used all three passes, you can make more one at a time for the rest of the day.

To take full advantage of Fastpass+, get your tickets early and make sure you’re getting those reservations at the first opportunity. If you’re staying at a Disney resort (or select Disney Springs resorts), you can make them 60 days in advance from the first day of your stay for your entire stay. If you’re not, you are clear to reserve your Fastpasses 30 days in advance. And of course, this service is free.

It’s also important to utilize Fastpass+ for the rides that are most important to you or that frequently have the longest waits. In Magic Kingdom, that means Seven Dwarves’ Mine Train, Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Good picks in Hollywood Studios would be anything in the newly opened Toy Story Land, and in Animal Kingdom, the same goes for Pandora — or rides like Expedition Everest or Kilimanjaro Safaris. In Epcot, you’ll want to score a Fastpass for Frozen Ever After if you have any Disney princess fans in your group, since that ride usually has waits upwards of an hour, even during the slower months.

Use rider switch if you have little ones.

If you’re traveling with a child who is too young or not yet tall enough to ride certain rides at Disney, rider switch is going to be key for your trip. All you have to do is talk to a cast member at the entrance of the ride you’d like to go on and ask about rider switch. You’ll be given a pass for the non-riding adult in your party. One of you can proceed to the ride and wait in line as usual while the other adult hangs out with the kiddo, and when the first adult is back, the second can skip the line and ride with up to two other people. That way, you’re only waiting in line once, and everyone in your party can still experience the attraction.

Pro tip: You can do this in addition to making Fastpass reservations, so don’t be shy about taking full advantages of these services that Disney offers to make your stay more pleasant.

11 things you can do before bed to wake up with glowing skin

marie antoinette sleeping tired bed

You might think that your daily skin-care regimen is over by the time you hit the sheets, but there’s actually plenty that you can do to improve your skin even while you sleep. From avoiding certain evening indulgences to using the right kind of pillowcase, here are a few tips that will have you glowing by morning.

First of all, wash your face.

There are nights when taking the time to splash some water on your face feels like an impossibly big task. But you have to do it — even if you didn’t wear makeup that day, and even if you didn’t make it to the gym.

Your precious dermis is actually picking up pollutants, dirt, and skin oils from your hair and fingers throughout the day. During the night, your skin cells regenerate and the dead ones rub off. However, this process doesn’t go as smoothly if your skin isn’t clean.

Mona Gohara, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine told Prevention, "when you have a buildup of grime or makeup or other pollutants, it makes it hard for your skin to get rid of those dead skin cells."

Washing your face at night, even if just with plain water, makes a real difference to what you see in the mirror the next day.

Skip the cheese.

Joy McCarthy, author of "Joyous Detox," holistic nutritionist and Genuine Health Ambassador also suggests giving cheese and other dairy products a pass if you’re looking to cultivate a flawless visage while you sleep.

"Research has proven that dairy promotes acne, but particularly pasteurized dairy," shesaid to Best Health magazine. The theory is that dairy ramps up inflammation, which in turn can trigger breakouts.

If you’re craving a snack before bed, opt for something that will give your skin a boost like antioxidant-packed blueberries or strawberries.

Eat the right kind of dinner.

What you put in your belly in the evening can have a big impact on how your skin looks in the morning. When it comes to dinner, stick to food that will help you look your best.

"There’s a growing body of research showing that diet really does affect your complexion," dermatologist Jessica Wu toldPrevention.

She recommends treats like olive oil, tomatoes, oatmeal, dark chocolate, and green tea for optimal skin happiness.

Huge changes are coming to ‘Fortnite’ tomorrow — here’s what we know

Tilted Towers rocket launch Fortnite

In "Fortnite: Battle Royale," the changing of seasons is a big deal, and Thursday's transition to Season 5 may be the biggest one yet.

Each season brings a new theme to the game's Battle Pass, and often many cosmetic changes to the map. For example, in the days leading up to the beginning of Season 4, the game hinted that a meteor shower would change the island forever. When the meteor did hit, it caused a large crater in the enter of the map, turning Dusty Depot into the craterous Dusty Divot.

However, in lieu of ever simply announcing what the newest additions and changes to the game will be, the developers at Epic Games will often leave cryptic hints and Easter eggs scattered across the island (or in the game's code) for the most dedicated fans to decode.

This time around the clues are weirder and more mysterious than ever, and even now, just one day away from the beginning of Season 5, we still know very little about what to expect.

Here's what we do know ahead of the big reveal tomorrow:

SEE ALSO: 'Fortnite: Battle Royale' just got a huge new update — here's the new mode and weapons

Two weekends ago, a one-time in-game event featured a rocket launch and rifts in the space-time continuum, and nothing has been the same on the island since.

You can watch a full cinematic-style recording of the launch, recorded and edited by YouTube filmmaker Enzait Films here:

The rifts — which look like bright blue cracks in the sky — have been steadily growing and multiplying since the launch, and have been seen making landmarks disappear mysteriously, as well as spitting out a few objects that don't seem like they belong on the island, like this stage coach, spotted near Moisty Mire...

... or this anchor, seemingly plopped on a hillside by another rift.

The rifts are almost certainly key to Season 5's overall theme, especially because they are the only reasonable way to explain the fact that hints have started popping up in real life.

For starters, the disappeared Durr Burger statue was seen in the California desert:

chrissy teigen john legend

  • We can't seem to get enough of our favorite celebrity romance stories
  • Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton while on vacation in Kenya in December 2010.
  • From Emily Blunt and John Krasinski to George and Amal Clooney, here is how some of the most romantic celebrity proposals went down.

If you're anything like us, proposal stories never get old. Whether the people involved are our
parents or two random people on the internet, proposals never fail to make us cry for the beginning of two people's happily-ever-after—or so we hope. Even celebrity couples whom we've never met before, such as Chrissy Teigen and John Legend and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, still produce the same love-filled emotions every time we hear about their famous hubbies getting down on one knee.

Because everyone loves a good love story, we've rounded up the most romantic celebrity proposals we've ever heard about. From over-the-top arrangements to plans that went awry, these funny and heartwarming stories will make you swoon. Find out how your favorite stars fell in love ahead.

Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian

To understand the romance behind Ohanian's proposal to Williams, you have to understand how they met. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Williams revealed that she met Ohanian at a hotel pool area in Rome. Annoyed that Ohanian was sitting next to her and her friends when there were dozens of tables still available, Williams lied and told him that there was a rat where he was sitting. His response? "I’m from Brooklyn. I see rats all the time."

Williams laughed and the two started dating. A year and half later, when Ohanian proposed, he did it in the same spot in Rome where the two met. When he got down on one knee, there was also—yup, you guessed it—a plastic rat on a table nearby.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

Markle and Harry were roasting a chicken on a night in November 2017 in their home in Nottingham Cottage when the prince proposed. As the chicken was roasting (fun fact: they were using Ina Garten's roast chicken recipe), Harry got down on one knee and presented his future wife with a diamond from Botswana that incorporated two stones from his mother Princess Diana's jewelry collection.

"It was just an amazing surprise," Markle told the BBC. "It was so sweet and natural and very romantic."

Emmy Rossum and Sam Esmail

Rossum and Esmail, a director on "Mr. Robot," have a tradition of reading The New York Times' "Modern Love" section every Sunday. One week, as Rossum read, she slowly realized that the article was about her and Esmail's love story, which is when her future husband got down on one knee.

"Then one weekend we didn't read it—I don't remember why exactly—and the following Friday he reminded me that we hadn't. I was actually in kind of a bad mood that day, so I said, 'Oh, well I'll read it eventually.' And he said, 'No, no, no, I think you should read it.' And I said, 'I'm having a back spasm. I'm actually going to take a bath and have a glass of wine, but if you really want to hear it, I'll read it to you from the bathtub. So I got in the bathtub with the 'Modern Love' section as he's posted up on the sink. I didn't notice any kind of ring in his pocket, and I began to read the article, and the story is about a director who falls in love with an actress, and I started to think: Huh, that's strange. And then I realized that it was our love story," Rossum told Vogue.

The company formerly known as Google is far bigger than most people realize (GOOG, GOOGL)

Letters spell the word

Several of the projects and companies overseen by Alphabet Inc., the holding company Google created in 2015, have generated news of late.

On Tuesday,  RBC Capital analyst Mark Mahaney issued a bullish report about the future of Waymo, the self-driving car company is due to launch commercial operations in Phoenix, Ariz., before the end of the year.

And on Wednesday, Alphabet's  research and development arm, X, announced that two projects, Loon and Wing, would become independent companies within Alphabet.

This slight surge in news reminded us that it's been nearly three years since Google blew up its entire corporate structure to form a new parent company: Alphabet.

The shake-up was intended to help all of its businesses operate more efficiently, a move CEO Larry Page was working on for years as a secret project he called "Javelin."

This move also allowed Page to step back from day-to-day operations to "focus on the bigger picture."

Now, Alphabet is a massive corporation that encompasses everything from internet-beaming hot air balloons to self-driving cars to Google Cloud.

This seemed like a good time to revisit how Alphabet is structured.

SEE ALSO: Alphabet says 2 of its ambitious side projects are ready for the big leagues

SEE ALSO: A Wall Street analyst says Google has 2 different choices for its car spinoff, and one of them could make Waymo a $180 billion company

Google officially became Alphabet in October, 2015, with the hope of allowing businesses units to operate independently and move faster. Google cofounder Larry Page is the CEO of the umbrella company, Alphabet.

Alphabet is divided into two main units: Google and Other Bets. Other Bets is best known for its "moonshot" R&D unit, X, but it also houses several other companies. Let's start with the smaller companies under Other Bets.

Alphabet's Access division includes Google Fiber, which launched in Kansas City in 2012 and expanded to about 9 cities. Fiber offers extremely fast high-speed internet (up to 1G) and some TV. It's billed as an alternative to traditional cable companies. It currently has about 200,000 subscribers.

A complete timeline of Justin Bieber's dating life before he suddenly became engaged to Hailey Baldwin

$

justin bieber

It's hard to remember a time before Justin Bieber posters were featured on bedroom walls across the world. He rocketed to fame at just 13 years old, sauntered through an impossibly seamless puberty (in a physical sense, at least), and continues to capture the hearts of Beliebers everywhere.

Now that the pop star is officially off the market, let's take a look at all the women who have managed to capture his coveted attention — and perhaps why his engagement has been seen as a complete wild card.

January 2011 - October 2012: Selena Gomez assumed her role as Bieber's first love.

Bieber and Selena Gomez, who had already been friends for some time, more or less confirmed their official status when they were photographed kissing on vacation in the Caribbean, according to Billboard. The storied relationship that followed included numerous red carpet appearances and grand romantic gestures.

The public first sensed tension in May 2012, when, according to the Mirror, Gomez posted a photo of herself firing a gun at a shooting range with the caption "releasing some stress today." She then deleted her Instagram account.

Five months later, Justin posted (and quickly deleted) a photo with the caption "Lingse." His eagle-eyed fans figured out that this was likely an anagram of the word "single," signaling that he and Selena had broken up.

October 2012 - November 2012: Bieber was linked to Miranda Kerr.

In the midst of rumors that Bieber and Gomez had trouble in paradise, Bieber was reportedly exchanging flirty texts with model Miranda Kerr.

Just days after the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on November 7 — where Bieber performed and was reportedly seen giving Kerr a peck on the cheek— the Associated Press and E! News confirmed his breakup with Gomez.

Neither Bieber nor Kerr have ever commented on their alleged relationship, but Bieber did eventually have an aggressive confrontation with Kerr's then-husband, Orlando Bloom. Multiple witnesses told TMZ that Bloom swung at Bieber after the pop star "said something to the effect of, 'I had sex with your wife.'"

November 2012: Bieber was also linked to Barbara Palvin.

Other outlets reported that Bieber was "hanging out" with model Barbara Palvin backstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Multiple photos surfaced of the two together, presumably taken at the Victoria's Secret after party.

One day later, the rapper Lil Twist posted a photo of himself, Bieber, and Palvin on Twitter — but quickly deleted it. Gomez later re-posted the photo to her own Twitter account, adding a vague comment ("……"), according to Hollywood Life, but then deleted hers as well.

Bieber and Palvin were also photographed attending the same performance of "The Lion King" on Broadway — although the model later denied romance rumors to Celeb Buzz.

"It was my sister's first time in New York and we so wanted to go to Broadway, but there were no more tickets," she told Celebuzz in January 2013. "I just came up and was telling him, 'My sister is here, but she's sad because we can't go to Broadway, no more tickets.' And he was like, 'Well, I can get you one.' And his friends came ... like six people and then me, my sister and agent. So [we're] friends."

13 bus trip stories that will make you want to shell out the extra money for a plane ticket

packing

School kids, commuters, and travelers have one thing in common — they all know how bad bus rides can be at times. And it makes sense, really. If you cram enough people, all anxious to reach their destination, into a small space for an extended period of time, tensions are bound to run high.

Despite this, people still choose to ride the bus, even after their school days are long gone. With their low fares, they can be an extremely attractive form of transportation, but they do come with another kind of price.

The stories we've collected here are some of the worst bus stories of all time from Reddit and include accidents, broken-down buses, overflowing toilets, passengers having sex, and a lot of vomit. You may be willing to pay a little extra for a plane ticket after these.

Of course, these are just for fun as we can't independently authenticate these stories.

The toilet exploded.

"On a bus back home from seeing my girlfriend, the toilet in the back ruptured. Blue/brown p---/s--- water kept trickling in small streams down the entire length of the bus, moving and congealing with the motion of it. It was the smelliest 1.5 hours of my life."— Redditor Squeaky_Lobster

I spent most of the trip throwing up.

"My family went on a Christmas light bus tour when I was 7 or 8. We had gone to lunch and I had popcorn shrimp. I'm not sure if there was something wrong with the shrimp or if I just had a stomach virus, but I spent most of the trip throwing up in a tiny bus bathroom. That was over 15 years ago and it's only within the past week that I was brave enough to try shrimp again."— Redditor underleaves

Our bus hit a car.

"One time our bus hit a car in a roundabout. Guy we hit was completely at fault. He must not have understood the turning radius of a bus or something. We were close to school and our bus driver was like, 'well, I gotta deal with this.' So we got off the bus and walked to school."— Redditor anirishman15

11 photos show how close Merkel was with Obama, and how different things are with Trump

The NATO summit in Brussels has put the strained relationship between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel back in the spotlight.

Over the past year and a half, Trump has consistently attacked Germany over trade and accused them of not contributing their fair share to NATO's budget, leading to several tense interactions between him and Merkel.

Based on Trump's remarks at a Wednesday breakfast meeting with NATO's general secretary, things won't seem to be getting better anytime soon.

"Germany is totally controlled by Russia, because they will be getting from 60-70% of their energy from Russia and a new pipeline," Trump said. "You tell me if that's appropriate, because I think it's not, and I think it's a very bad thing for NATO, and I don't think it should have happened. And I think we have to talk to Germany about it."

It seems hard to believe that less than two years ago, Germany was one of the US' closest allies, and Merkel was working harmoniously with former President Barack Obama.

Merkel and Obama not only shared perspectives on various issues — they were also close friends. These 11 photos show just how different Merkel's relationship has been with the two American presidents.

DON'T MISS: One amazing photo with Trump and NATO leaders says it all

Trump and Merkel's relationship got off to a rocky start. After months of harshly criticizing Merkel for her handling of the refugee crisis on the campaign trial, the two leaders had an awkward first meeting at the White House in March 2017.

While Obama defended Merkel's immigration policies as president, Trump had previously accused Merkel of "ruining Germany" by admitting Syrian refugees. He even suggested his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton would be "America's Merkel."

At their first time meeting face-to-face at the White House in March 2017, awkwardness ensued when Trump appeared to ignore Merkel asking him for a handshake during their photo-op in the Oval Office.

Trump later claimed not to have heard her or the photographers asking them to shake hands.

During the previous 8 years when Obama was president, the US and Germany worked together on important global issues — including responding to Russia's annexation of Crimea, tackling ISIS and the refugee crisis, and recovering from the global financial meltdown.

Obama and Merkel also developed a close diplomatic partnership and friendship.

"She is giving voice, I think, to the kinds of principles that bring people together rather than divide them, and I'm very proud of her for that, and I'm proud of the German people for that," Obama said in a 2016 speech in Germany while reflecting on his time working with Merkel.

Source: Business Insider

Trump, on the other hand, does not see eye-to-eye with Merkel on many issues. He has consistently decried the US' trade deficit with Germany, which comes out to around $65 billion.

In May 2017, Merkel launched a subtle jab at Trump, saying at a campaign event: "The times in which we could fully rely on others are partly over. I have experienced this in the last few days. We Europeans really have to take our destiny into our own hands."

Trump then hit back on Twitter a few days later, writing, "We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change."

But economists say the trade deficit is not necessarily a bad thing, because while Americans spend more on German goods, Germans tend to save at a higher rate, meaning that much of those savings end up being invested in the United States economy.

When you’re health conscious, it’s a given that you’re going to spend time thinking about what you eat. But what you might be surprised to know is how many calories are in most alcoholic drinks. Some of the most popular drinks ring in at over 500 calories, and others at less than 100 calories.

This doesn’t mean you should never drink them, or that you should drink more than one, but it is something to be aware of as you decide on your drink of choice. It's also worth noting that every bartender will make drinks differently and that calories are not the only thing to be considered.

With that in mind, we rounded up the average calorie count of some of your favorite alcoholic drinks — and how to lower the calorie count on some with simple swaps.

Pina Coladas can be pretty high in calories.

According to Newsweek, a traditional pina colada, composed of rum, pineapple juice and cream of coconutcan contain as much as 650 calories. Opt for light rum, or substitute unsweetened coconut water for cream of coconut to get more drink for fewer calories, suggests registered dietitian and author of "The New You (and Improved) Diet," Keri Glassman in Fitness magazine.

Mimosas hover around 100 calories.

The average 8-ounce mimosa contains 150-200 calories, according to The Daily Meal.

You can opt for less ginger beer for a low-calorie Moscow Mule.

This refreshing drink, typically served in a copper mug contains 138 calories per serving, according to Eat This Not That. The recipe calls for 2 ounces of vodka, 4-6 ounces of ginger beer, and a half-ounce of lime juice. Opt for 3-4 ounces of ginger beer in your recipe to have a 100 calorie Moscow Mule.

  • Trader Joe's jobs have a sterling reputation in the world of retail.
  • Glassdoor named the grocery chain as one of the best places in the US to work in 2018.
  • Business Insider scoured the web to find out what crew members like about working at Trader Joe's.

Trader Joe's jobs have a solid reputation — no small feat in the often grueling world of retail work.

This year, Glassdoor named the grocery chain with a cult-like following as one of the best places to work in the US. That's not a fluke. Trader Joe's also made the list in 2017, 2013, 2012, and 2011.

"If you want it to be a positive experience, it will be a positive experience," a Trader Joe's crew member wrote in a 2017 Reddit AMA.

Business Insider spoke to employees and trawled Reddit and Quora to find out what people like best about working at the grocery chain.

Here's what Trader Joe's crew members had to say:

The sense of freedom

Two Trader Joe's crew members who spoke to Business Insider emphasized the sense of freedom and flexibility the chain fosters.

"There's no script," one crew member from New York told Business Insider. "As long as I make sure the customer is having a great time, and I'm emphasizing Trader Joe's values, I can talk to people about whatever I want."

The employee added that they had never had a manager tell them to avoid speaking about certain topics with customers.

"They all love that I'm engaged," the crew member said. "I've discussed politics, religion, movies, philosophy, parenting, and so many other things, all while bagging people's groceries. It's the best."

And, according to one California-based employee who spoke to Business Insider, that sense of flexibility also manifests itself in the chain's scheduling procedures.

"The scheduling is flexible and school-friendly," the crew member told Business Insider.

A strong set of benefits

"As far as benefits are concerned, TJ's does quite well," former crew member Devon Hammer wrote in a 2012 Quora post.

He cited the chain's "good system for vacation pay" and comprehensive health insurance plans, in particular.

Trader Joe's insurance plans come out to $75 a month, according to the chain's website. The store also offers a retirement plan, contributing "10% of annual salary to eligible crew members" and paid time off.

A California-based crew member told Business Insider that the store's benefits and "great hourly wages" were a huge draw.

A focus on boosting morale

"I could list off the several little things done day-to-day in order to keep morale high, but that in and of itself is a big contributor to the attitude of the employees," crew member Alden Aust wrote on Quora. "The company knows their reputation and bends over backwards to maintain that via free food, friendly managers and fringe benefits."

Here's the full agenda for Donald Trump's UK visit

  • Donald Trump will arrive in the UK on the afternoon of Thursday, July 12, for the start of a four-day visit.
  • He will be the guest of honour at a black-tie dinner with 100 business leaders and travel to Windsor Castle to meet the Queen.
  • The president will mostly avoid London where large protests against his visit are expected.
  • Trump will spend most of his visit in Scotland, where he owns a number of golf courses.

LONDON — UK and US officials have revealed the full details of Donald Trump's controversial trip to Britain.

Plans for a formal "state visit" by the president were put on hold last year after millions of people threatened to protest against it and the Speaker of the House of Commons effectively banned him from visiting parliament due to his "sexist and racist" views.

Trump will now instead arrive on the afternoon of Thursday July 12, for a more low-key four day visit, almost all of which will take place outside of London.

Plans for the visit include a formal dinner with around 100 business leaders, a military demonstration and the first meeting between the president and the Queen at Windsor Castle.

Here's everything you need to know about the US president's trip to the UK.

SEE ALSO: Trump will be barred from speaking in Parliament

Avoiding London

Trump will fly into the UK on Thursday afternoon at an officially undisclosed airport in the South East where he will be met by the International Trade Secretary Liam Fox. Unusually for a trip of this type, the president will not travel to Downing Street to meet the prime minister once he arrives, but will instead almost entirely avoid the capital.

The reluctance to spend much time in London is likely due to the large-scale protests that have been planned in the city, including plans approved by London mayor Sadiq Khan, to fly a huge balloon depicting the president as a baby wearing a nappy, above central London.

Asked whether the president was deliberately avoiding the capital, a spokesperson for Theresa May told Business Insider: "We're looking forward to making sure the president can see and appreciate the United Kingdom beyond London and the South East."

Black tie dinner at Blenheim Palace

Once in the UK, Trump and the First Lady will travel to the magnificent Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire for a black tie dinner with around 100 leading business figures and UK politicians, which will start around 19.00 GMT. Blenheim is the birthplace of Winston Churchill and the evening will begin with a military ceremony in the Great Court performed by the bands of the Scotch, Irish and Welsh guards.

The band will play the Liberty Fanfare, Amazing Grace and the National Emblem march before Trump and Melania will sit down with around 100 business leaders from the worlds of financial services, travel, creative sector, food and drink sector, engineering, tech, infrastructure, pharma and defence.

During the dinner the Countess of Wessex's Orchestra will perform "a series of classic British and American hits" and the Royal regiment of Scotland will "pipe the President out at the end."

A night at the embassy

After dining in Oxfordshire, Trump will fly by helicopter for an overnight visit to the British capital. He will will travel with the First Lady, Melania to stay at the US ambassador's official residence at Winfield House in Regent's Park. His arrival is expected to be met with huge protests in the capital on Friday.

8 free fitness apps that can help you get in shape — and what they're best for

fitness workout exercise push-up

Getting in shape can change your life.

Regular exercise is the closest thing to a miracle drug that we have. It can improve your physical health, fight disease, extend your life, boost your mood and memory, combat anxiety and depression, and more. Plus, it just feels good to be fit.

If you don't already have an established exercise routine, it's hard to go from intending to work out to actually getting it done. That could be one reason why more than 75% of Americans don't get enough exercise.

If you're trying to figure out how to start a fitness routine or looking to track your fitness journey, apps can help.

No single app is perfect, but depending on your goals, free fitness apps can help you build strength, get better at running, and improve your stretching or recovery.

For a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research in 2017, a team of researchers analyzed how well 28 different fitness apps matched the exercise guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The 28 apps were chosen because they'd been reviewed before in a previous study on fitness apps, and were selected from the more than 100,000 health- and fitness- apps available.

In general, the government's recommended physical activity guidelines call for healthy adults to do at least two and a half hours of moderate-intensity activity — or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity — per week, along with muscle-strengthening exercises at least twice a week.

The ACSM takes guidelines for exercise programs a few steps further, stating that all workout programs should include safety precautions, warm-up, conditioning that includes strengthening, and cool-down. Plus, they say programs should progress at a safe rate for each individual, and that workout programs should include components of aerobic fitness, strength and resistance exercise, and flexibility.

A comprehensive program that does all of that is a lot for any app — many apps don't include full safety precautions, warm-ups and cool-downs, or all the details that a novice might want to know. Plus, most apps focus on one aspect of fitness, like getting stronger or building running endurance.

That's why no app in the study scored more than 35 points out of 70 in the evaluation scale that the researchers devised. (Apps could receive 30 points for aerobic fitness guidelines, 30 points for strength and conditioning guidelines, and 10 points for flexibility guidelines.)

But a few of the top-scoring apps can serve as a good guide to overall workouts or for more targeted goals like building aerobic endurance, strength, or flexibility. All these apps guide users through exercises, offering videos that show how to perform moves and voice guidance to signal when it's time to change pace or position.

Here are the best choices, according to the research.

SEE ALSO: How much you have to exercise and what kind of workout to do to get different types of benefits

Best overall score: The Johnson & Johnson Official 7-Minute Workout

What it is: The Johnson & Johnson Official 7-Minute Workout app was designed by Chris Jordan, Director of Exercise Physiology at the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute. It's designed to meet the American College of Sports Medicine's fitness guidelines, and includes both aerobic and strength-training exercises done in the style of a quick, fitness-building interval program.

Best for:Beginners. This app ranks very highly on safety, making it a great choice for beginners. It provides an effective full-body workout that can help people meet fitness guidelines, but doesn't particularly excel in any one area. So anyone seeking a more specialized, less general program may want to look elsewhere.

Relevant scores: 16.3 out of 30 for aerobic training; 17.2 out of 30 for strength training

Second highest overall: Nike+ Training Club

What it is: The Nike+ Training Club app includes more than 100 workouts designed by Nike trainers, with video and audio guidance for workouts of different lengths. You can also log your other fitness activities on the app.

Best for:Full-body strength training. This app doesn't perform as well in the aerobic exercise portion (Nike has another app exclusively for running which is worth checking out). But it did well in the strength section. Reviewers noted that both the individual workouts and the multi-week training programs were good.

Nike+ is great for tracking overall fitness and offers good strength-training options. This app is a promising choice if you want a varied selection of workouts using anything from simple body-weight exercises to gym equipment. And unlike most apps, there's no pressure to upgrade to a premium program.

Relevant scores: 10 out of 30 for aerobic training; 19.5 out of 30 for strength training; 3.1 out of 10 for flexibility

The app with the third-best overall score was the only aerobic fitness app that scored highly: Weight Loss Running by Verv

What it is: This app was named Running for Weight Loss: Interval Training when it was reviewed for the study, but that's since changed. It's specifically focused on interval training, with runs that alternate between easier and harder levels of intensity. There's also a meal-planning component, which is important for weight loss.

Best for:  Aerobic training and running. This app is targeted towards people who want to lose weight, but it'll also help you build endurance and speed as a runner. Interval training is one of the best ways to get in shape, so no matter what your aerobic fitness goals are, plans that incorporate this approach are worth considering.

The app also includes training programs for specific runs: one helps you prepare for a 5k within seven weeks, and another is a 16-week marathon training program (which assumes you already run a fair amount). Another program is designed for those just starting to run.

To get to the free version, you need to sign up for a free premium trial and cancel the auto-renew. Some users report that the pop-ups asking you to sign up for a paid membership are intrusive.

Relevant scores: 26.7 out of 30 for aerobic training; 3.5 out of 10 for flexibility

Panera Bread employee

  • Panera Bread employees know all about how things are run at the popular fast-food chain.
  • A number of current and former employees have posted about their experiences on social media.
  • Here are some insider facts, tips, and hacks that Panera Bread employees have shared online.

Panera Bread store employees know all about what it takes to run the popular casual chain of restaurants.

According to the company's website, Panera Bread now boasts "2,000 bakery-cafés" and employs around 100,000 associates. Some Panera Bread employees work at corporate-run stores, while others work for franchisees.

Either way, all of these employees glean valuable insight into their store's inner-workings.

Here are a few things all Panera Bread employees know.

You can always try asking for a specialized order...

If you want an order tweaked at Panera Bread, it can't hurt to ask.

In a 2018 Quora post, associate trainer Ariana Dickerson wrote that calorie-conscious customers should ask for help.

"If you're worried about calories or how many just ask any associate, they'll grab their nutrition guide and help you create your perfect salad," she wrote on Quora.

Former Panera Bread employee Josh Benner took to Quora to make all sorts of suggestions, including asking for free granola toppings on fruit salads, requesting toasted sandwiches, and swapping the bread on certain sandwiches.

"Some sandwiches are on breads that just don't make sense," he wrote. "I'm looking at you turkey avocado on sour dough. Nobody should have to deal with the hassle of fitting that big sandwich on such a small piece of bread."

... and you can also ask for options other than the standard baguette side order

Not in the mood for one of Panera Bread's traditional side baguettes?

That's okay. You've got options.

"You also have the option of a sprouted grain dinner roll," Panera Bread catering coordinator Laura Biermann wrote in a 2018 Quora post.

What's more, associate Luis Torres wrote in a 2017 Quora post that customers also "have the option to pick two slices of any of the other breads we offer."

The bread is really baked in the store

At Panera Bread, the titular product is really baked at the restaurant. Individual stores receive daily shipments of pre-mixed dough.

"I do really bake the bread," a Panera Bread baker wrote in a 2015 Reddit AMA. "The bread is just mixed at a big factory and than transported to us every night or morning, so we can let it rise."

The baker added that Panera Bread employees bake all the breads — including sourdough, ciabatta, focaccia, croissants, and challah— the sweets behind the glass, and soufflés.

Likewise, the employee added that Panera Bread soups are delivered in bag, and then heated up into "this scary-looking thing called a thermalizer."

Another Panera Bread baker wrote in a 2013 Reddit post that "the final baked product was always baked during the night before" at Panera, and surplus product is typically donated to local charities.

Apple just launched new MacBook Pro laptops — and they have a updated keyboard (AAPL)

  • Apple launched new MacBook Pro laptops on Thursday.
  • The 13-inch model with Touch Bar and the 15-inch model with Touch Bar have new processors and a few other updates.
  • They're not cheap though — the 13-inch starts at $1799, and the least powerful 15-inch model will cost $2399.
  • The thin-and-light MacBook and the MacBook Air didn't get updates.

Apple launched new MacBook Pro laptops on Thursday with updated processors, displays, and a "quieter" keyboard.

There are several new configurations for both the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar model. They have updated components, but the computer design is unchanged.

  • The starting price for the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is $1799, the same as before. It now can be configured with quad-core Intel chips.
  • The entry price for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is $2399, also unchanged, which comes with a 6-core Intel processor.

Here's how Apple summarizes the specs:

MacBook Pro 2018 specs

Apple says its battery life estimates are unchanged. The new computers are available today to order through Apple. Stores will get them later this week.

One big update is that Apple has a "third-generation keyboard" that Apple says is capable of quieter typing. That's one complaint with the current MacBook Pro keyboards. The other main complaint, which has spurred class action lawsuits, is that it's fragile and can feel "sticky."

Apple also updated its embedded ARM chip that controls the Touch Bar, Touch ID, and Siri. The new chip, T2, which is also installed in the iMac Pro, is capable of activating Siri, a voice assistant, by saying "Hey Siri."

Apple also updated the laptop displays with "True Tone," which the company says will deliver more natural color.

The entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro without the Touch Bar didn't get an update, and neither did the thin-and-light MacBook nor the more inexpensive MacBook Air.

Here are the pictures Apple provided for the new laptops:
