10 filmmakers who should direct the next James Bond movie now that Danny Boyle is out

0
0

james bond

11 filmmakers have directed one or more of the 24 "007 James Bond" films to date — but Danny Boyle will not be one of them.

The official James Bond Twitter account announced on Tuesday that Boyle — the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind "Slumdog Millionaire,""Steve Jobs,""28 Days Later," and more — exited the untitled 25th Bond film over "creative differences."

The movie is scheduled for a November 2019 release date and was supposed to start production later this year, which means a replacement director will probably be announced soon if it wants to meet the release date.

Of those 11 Bond directors, none have been a woman or person of color, so with Boyle gone, it feels like a good time to consider the likes of Steve McQueen, Kathryn Bigelow, and more.

But no matter who replaces Boyle, they'll most likely be directing star Daniel Craig in his last Bond film after he reluctantly came back for his fifth outing as the character. The pressure's on.

Below are 10 filmmakers who should direct the next James Bond movie:

SEE ALSO: Director Danny Boyle has exited the next James Bond movie over 'creative differences'

Kathryn Bigelow

Films include:"The Hurt Locker,""Zero Dark Thirty,""Detroit"

If MGM is looking for Oscar-winning filmmakers to take over the Bond franchise, then it should set its sights on Bigelow, the only woman to ever win the best directing Oscar for the 2009 film "The Hurt Locker." Bigelow is an expert in crafting tension, as seen in her films of real-life high stakes like "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Detroit."

Scott Cooper

Films include:"Crazy Heart,""Out of the Furnace,""Black Mass,""Hostiles"

Cooper's "Hostiles," about a 19th century Army captain who reluctantly escorts a Native American family back to their tribal land, was his best film to date. It was criminally overlooked in the 2017-2018 awards circle, but proved he's ready to take on something bigger like Bond. (It's also on Netflix in the US.)

Debra Granik

Films include:"Winter's Bone,""Leave No Trace"

Granik went eight years without releasing a feature film between this year's "Leave No Trace" and 2010's "Winter's Bone," which earned a best picture Oscar nomination and Jennifer Lawrence her first best actress nomination. But she didn't lose her edge with "Leave No Trace" and would be a worthy replacement for Boyle on Bond.

7 things that could be hurting your mental health without you even knowing it

0
0

woman depressed mental healthAccording to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 16 million adults in America suffer from depression, so if that's something you face, you're definitely not alone. Even if your depression is being treated by a doctor, it can still be difficult to cope with.

Of course, it's hard to do positive things for yourself when you're struggling with mental illness. But there are definitely things you can stop doing to make your daily life a little easier, which might seem more manageable to you when things get bad.

Here are ways you're sabotaging your mental health — and what you can do to change these bad habits. Dealing with depression is never easy, but there are definitely things you can try to make that mental and emotional mode a little lighter.

It's worth noting that everyone's journey with mental health — including their coping mechanisms — vary, so you should always do what is best for you.

You're getting too little or too much sleep.

Insomnia and sleeping a lot are, somehow, both symptoms of depression. Giving into those symptoms, however, can make your depression worse. When you're down, it can be easy to want to spend your days in bed, but it's more important to do whatever you need to to stay up and awake and ideally productive.

And if you're not sleeping? According to Psych Central, sleep hygiene is necessary. Only use your bed for sleeping, develop a nighttime ritual, and go to bed and wake up at the same times every day.

If you're still having trouble sleeping, it's worth talking to your doctor about it.

You're obsessing over social media.

Scrolling through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or even Snapchat can have negative effects on anyone's mood, but it can make things especially worse for you if you're depressed already.

A study released earlier this year revealed that people who are depressed are more likely to be addicted to social media and to compare themselves to others. If you need to, delete the apps from your phone for now. They'll still be there when your head is in a better place.

You're spending too much time dwelling on the negative things in your life.

Dwelling on the same negative thoughts is called rumination, and this could be one of the ways you're sabotaging yourself. Obviously, it's easier said than done to think positively, but what you can do is distract yourself when you realize you're caught in that negative thought cycle. Watch a movie, take a walk, color in a coloring book — anything to keep your mind (and maybe even your hands) busy until the wave of negativity passes.

11 surprising things that could be slowing down your metabolism

0
0

An unidentified jogger runs past a billboard with posters about the consultative referendum on the association between Ukraine and the European Union in a park in Utrecht, the Netherlands, April 6, 2016.

It's hard to deny that metabolism definitely has a correlation to our overall weight, as those with a fast metabolism may be able to burn calories quickly compared to those with a slow and sluggish metabolism. Board-certified cardiologist Dr. Luiza Petre explained that metabolism is the process through which the food we ingest gets converted into energy blocks measured in calories. Every time you eat, she suggested that a set of chemical reactions in your body’s cells breaks down the food and turns it into energy.

Although genetics play a big role in predetermining your metabolism, Dr. Petre suggested that there are many factors that can affect your metabolism whether it’s fast or slow. Among those factors include diet and exercise habits you indulge in daily.

However, there are other surprising factors that can influence your metabolism negatively if you aren’t careful. To bring these potentially harmful habits to the forefront, we spoke to Dr. Petre and other nutritional experts on the subject to help you determine what lifestyle habits are actually ruining your metabolism without you even knowing it. Here are some of the things they recommend keeping in mind.

You’re not drinking enough water.

Being dehydrated can lead to many metabolic disasters, according to registered dietitian Jenn Fillenworth MS, RD. Fillenworth explained to INSIDER that water is essential in keeping our metabolism running, and also prevents you from overeating. Not drinking enough water, she added, can also make the body think it's hungry when it could really benefit from drinking some H2O.

You are consuming way too much sugar.

"Drinking that large sugary coffee every morning can definitely cause metabolic havoc," Fillenworth said. Refined sugars, she said, can cause our body to produce lots of insulin to contain our blood sugars. This is hard on our metabolism, she added, and can lead to diseases like type two diabetes.

You’re indulging in too many happy hour drinks.

Alcohol is a major metabolism enemy, Fillenworth said. Once alcohol enters the body, she explained that our metabolism immediately begins using that as fuel. This means our body stops metabolizing other fuel sources which can lead to increased fat storage, she said.

We compared Instagram with the photo-editing app VSCO — here's which app I'd recommend to everyone

0
0

VSCO

Instagram is one of the most popular social media apps currently available, allowing users to share pictures, videos, and livestreams of their daily lives. The Facebook-owned app is pretty casual — with face filters, stickers, and location tags — but it might leave some more serious photographers wanting more.

VSCO, a photo-editing and social media app, is aimed at artsy photographers who want a little more control over their photo editing. It's focused on artistic photography, while Instagram is more centered around snapshots of daily life. The two aren't mutually exclusive, but both apps serve different needs for different people.

Here are some of the differences between the two apps, and which app I would recommend to anyone:

SEE ALSO: We tried out 4 phone lenses that let you take photos that aren't possible with your stock iPhone camera — take a look

Both apps have an in-app camera. VSCO's gives you more control over how the final product turns out. You can choose to use separate points for focus or exposure within the frame, while Instagram is limited to one point for both focus and exposure.

Instagram's camera is less technical and has more social-based features. Since Instagram has the 'Stories' feature, there are additional filters and lenses focused around it.

In total, Instagram's story camera has type (text over a background), live, normal, boomerang (a looping video), music, focus, superzoom, rewind (a video that plays in reverse), and hands-free. Instagram's regular camera, meant for posting photos to the feed, only has flash and focus/exposure.

VSCO has a few additional features, like a bar that shows how much your phone is tilted.

8 online startups that make affordable and sustainable fine jewelry

jewelry startups main

With its inaccessible prices, technical terminology, and nebulous production practices, the world of fine jewelry is intimidating to step into and, for a generation that cares simultaneously about value, style, sustainability, and ethics, a world to be altogether avoided.

Not too long ago, we wouldn't even have considered buying nice jewelry online, but then again, that's what we thought about mattresses, luxury watches, and wine. With direct-to-consumer jewelry companies taking center stage, no middlemen or mark-ups mean that you can pay a palatable price that's closer to the true cost of making that beautiful gold necklace, while high standards for sourcing and production quell any fears that your purchase sets other livelihoods or the environment back.

Whether it takes the form of a single, thin gold ring, a heavy statement necklace, or dangling earrings that sparkle with every subtle head movement, jewelry is a very personal purchase. These online jewelry companies will help you make the decision without overcharging you in the process.

Mejuri

Mejuri's mission is to have women "embrace a daily dose of luxury." With plenty of under-$100 options, it makes fulfilling this mission very achievable.

I ate at the most beautiful McDonald's in the world, with crystal chandeliers, stained glass windows, and outrageously delicious pastries

  • Many travelers believe the most beautiful McDonald's in the world is in Porto, a coastal city in northwest Portugal.
  • Opened in 1995, the restaurant is located in a renovated space previously occupied by Cafe Imperial, a famous coffee shop open in the city since the 1930s.
  • I stopped by "the McDonald's Imperial" to see if it truly is the "World's Most Beautiful McDonald's."

You've probably eaten a Big Mac or McNuggets at dozens of McDonald's restaurants throughout your life, but have you ever stopped to think which of the chain's 36,899 locations is the most beautiful?

Many travelers believe the most beautiful McDonald's in the world is in Porto, an age-old coastal city in northwest Portugal known for its gorgeous cobblestone streets and historic medieval city center.

Opened in 1995, the restaurant is located in a renovated space previously occupied by Cafe Imperial, a famous coffee shop open in the city since the 1930s. The coffee shop was seen as a prime example of Art Deco architecture of the period and, thus, McDonald's retained most of the main architectural features when it took over the location.

One of my favorite things to do when traveling is to visit American fast food joints in other countries — you never know how much companies cater to local tastes. When I visited China in April, I found that KFC is by far the most popular American fast food chain there and it is far better than in the US.

When I got to Porto earlier this week, I decided that I had to check out the McDonald's Imperial — as it is called by locals — to see if it lived up to the hype as the "World's Most Beautiful McDonald's."

Here's what it was like:

SEE ALSO: KFC is by far the most popular fast food chain in China and it's nothing like the US brand — here's what it's like

DON'T MISS: One of the best airlines in the world is one you've probably never heard of — here's what it's like to fly Air Astana

The McDonald's was pretty busy when I stopped by for a late afternoon lunch one day this past week. It being summer in Portugal, there were tons of tourists dining al fresco. The restaurant is located in Liberdade Square in the center of the city and near many attractions.

The first thing you notice upon approaching the McDonald's is the giant bronze eagle by Portuguese sculptor Henrique Moreira. When Cafe Imperial opened in 1936, the entrance had a revolving door, but that is long gone.

When you first enter the restaurant, you notice the hallmarks of the Art Deco style (think Empire State Building-style): the ornate friezes along the ceiling, the crystal chandeliers, and, most famously, the massive stained glass window behind the counter.

Everything we think we know about the new 3 iPhones that could come out next month (AAPL)

0
0

iphone X

The most common questions most people have about the upcoming iPhone are as follows:

  1. When is it coming out?
  2. What's going to be new?

Apple doesn't give release dates or details about upcoming products before they're officially announced. The company usually reveals new features as well as when you can a new product at one of its annual launch events.

But based on previous years, you can predict pretty closely when you can buy the latest iPhone model, and it's coming up soon: September.

And based on analysts and reports, we have an idea what Apple could be launching this fall.

Here's everything you need to know about the 2018 iPhone lineup:

You will almost certainly be able to buy it this September.

Since 2012, Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone in September. Typically, the new iPhone is available to preorder a few days after Apple's announcement.

The current speculation suggests Apple's most likely date for launch is September 13.

Here's the recent history:

2012: iPhone 5 was announced on Wednesday, September 12, and started shipping on Friday, September 21.

2013: iPhone 5S was announced on Wednesday, September 10, and started shipping on Friday, September 20.

2014: iPhone 6 was announced on Tuesday, September 9, and started shipping on Friday, September 19.

2015: iPhone 6S was announced on Wednesday, September 9, and started shipping on Friday, September 25.

2016: iPhone 7 was announced on Wednesday, September 7, and started shipping on September 16.

2017: iPhone 8 and iPhone X were announced together on Tuesday, September 12. The iPhone 8 started shipping on September 22. In a change from previous years, iPhone X started shipping on November 3, almost two months after the announcement.

Reliable analysts and journalists have predicted Apple will release three new iPhones.

The short answer to what to expect from the new iPhones is more Face ID, Apple's facial recognition software that replaced the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone X. Signs are pointing to it becoming a default feature on this year's models.

Apple watchers are expecting three new iPhones this year: One that looks like the iPhone X but with updated components, a super-sized version of the iPhone X, and a less expensive iPhone with an edge-to-edge LCD screen and facial recognition that costs between $649 and $749.

The two higher-end iPhones could be pricey. This year's iPhone X started at $999. A "plus" version could be even more expensive.

The best travel clothes for men

0
0

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best travel clothes for men

The Insider Pick:

There are those for whom travel is a means to an end. And then there are those for whom travel is an end in and of itself. But regardless of which philosophical camp you fall into, it seems that we can all agree on one point. When traveling, you should be comfortable. Regardless of whether your idea of fun is jetting off by plane to some far-off island or taking a road trip in order to eat your way through every fast food joint on the interstate, you’ll want to be 100% comfortable as you do it. No more business casual, collared shirts, or belted pants. No matter how you’re traveling, you’ll want to have the right wardrobe for it.

When it comes to the perfect travel clothes, it’s really all about two things: comfort and function. First and foremost, you’ll want to be sure that whatever you’re wearing is something you’re willing to spend a very long day in (and most likely, without a shower). Then, you’ll want to ensure that your clothing serves a purpose. Those socks, for example, should probably be of the compression variety, and those pants should probably have ample pockets for all the snacks, passports, and other important items you’ll be carrying around all day.

It’s also wise to dress in layers when it comes to traveling. Be sure that you can always take something off or put something on. Who knows when you’ll want to use your hoodie as a pillow, or when the AC in your car will give out?

And finally, you’ll want to keep in mind portability when it comes to the right travel clothes. Don’t bring shoes, for example, that take up a ton of space in your luggage. Rather, you’ll want to find a pair that's light and compact as well as easy on your feet.

Ultimately, we’re confident that all of our favorite travel clothes will make your next vacation all the more enjoyable.

Here are the best men's travel clothes you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best travel pants you can buy

Why you'll love them: For dudes, it seems that comfort on the lower half of the body is more important than comfort elsewhere, and to that end, you’ll find few pairs of pants more comfortable and stylish than the ADED pants from Public Rec.

Don’t be the guy who travels in sweatpants. You’re better than that guy. You’re older than that guy. You’re going on a better vacation than that guy. Instead, wear pants that look and feel even better than sweatpants (yes, such a thing does exist). They’re called the All Day Every Day Pant from Public Rec, and they’re just as good for running errands as they are for running as they are for traveling.

Known for its technical leisure apparel for men, Public Rec launched in 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. With an original goal of raising $15,000, the company exceeded that by more than $160,000.

Using a blend of nylon and spandex, the All Day Every Day Pant is very soft, with the right amount of stretch, and a look suitable for wearing in public. Designed to be more stylish than sweatpants and more comfortable than jeans, the pants quickly sold out and even generated a 1,200-person long waiting list.

While most other sweatpants come in sizes like small, medium, and large, the ADED Pant uses waist and inseam measurements, so you'll get a fit that's not baggy or sloppy. The waist also features a drawstring for added comfort and fit. The ADED Pant is super soft and stretchy. With the same attributes that made the T-shirt so great, the pants are amazing, too. The stretch allows for full range of motion, compared to being restricted in jeans.

While most sweatpants have shallow front pockets and maybe one rear pocket, the ADED Pant has two front pockets and two rear pockets — all of which are stretchy, allowing for ample space for your wallet, phone, keys, and other belongings.

Pros: Extremely comfortable, great fit thanks to more precise sizing, plenty of pockets

Cons: Somewhat expensive

Buy the ADED Pant from Public Rec for $95

The best travel shoes that are packable

Why you'll love them: Not only are shoes from Vivo Barefoot supremely comfortable, they’re also extremely compact, making them perfect for stuffing in luggage.

There’s nothing quite as masculine as being vegan (some would say), and there’s certainly nothing quite as comfortable as vegan shoes. Both my boyfriend and I were surprised to find this to be the case when we tried out Vivo Barefoot footwear for the first time. The shoes are produced using animal-free products and processes so that you'll not only be comfortable, but guilt-free, too.

One of the best travel shoes for guys comes in the form of the Rif Swimruns for men. Inspired by the Moroccan sand dune running shoe, this is one shoe that is seriously lightweight and seriously comfortable.

Like all Vivo Barefoot shoes, you can wear the Rif Eco Suede without socks. The upper is, of course, constructed with an eco-friendly suede, while the sole is made of the company's signature TPU Compound, which is extremely thin and lightweight but sacrifices nothing in terms of durability.

In fact, the shoe is five times more puncture resistant than a standard sole of the same thickness. But because of how thin and flexible these shoes are, you can easily roll them up, which makes packing them away as easy as slipping them on.

While the Rif Eco Suede is certainly ideal for traveling, it's also a shoe that most men wouldn’t shy away from on a daily basis. It’s meant for the “urban minimalist,” as Vivo Barefoot describes, and is certainly eye-catching enough to start conversations even in environments as sterile as your office.

Vivo Barefoot has dozens of other styles as well, so if the Rif Eco Suede isn’t exactly your cup of tea, you're sure to find a pair that suits you.

Pros: Capable of being rolled, no socks, breathable, vegan construction

Cons: Fit can be a bit tricky, expensive

Buy Vivo Barefoot Shoes for $130+

The best compression socks for travel

Why you'll love them: If your travel schedule requires you to be on your feet a lot of the day, the Sockwell Circulator Graduated Compression Socks are great for relieving pressure in your lower back.

The Sockwell Circulator Graduated Compression Socks will soon become a mainstay in your suitcase, or more realistically, on your feet. They both have four zones of graduated compression from the ankle on up, which keeps the toes feeling comfortable.

Thanks to its spandex, bamboo rayon, stretch nylon, and merino wool construction, these socks are comfortable, but more importantly, ensure good circulation throughout your legs. And if you suffer from swelling feet on airplanes, these socks could be a real lifesaver.

The Circulator only comes in two sizes (though 89% of Amazon buyers say they fit as expected.) While most socks that spend all day on your feet, in a shoe, and in some form of transportation smell pretty unpleasant by the time you’re ready to take them off, reviewers have noted that this particular pair doesn’t tend to retain any odor or moisture.

These socks are especially useful not only in promoting circulation but also in minimizing swelling and reducing fatigue. So whether you’re preparing for a long day of sightseeing or just looking to make it through your flight without bloated ankles and calves, you should be able to make use of the Circulator.

Although some compression socks are almost comically long, these guys are a bit less conspicuous. The sock should fit over your calf, and thanks to accu-fit technology (which is basically dependent on spandex running throughout the sock), you won’t have to deal with the sock slipping down your leg throughout the day.

Pros: Reduces foot and ankle swelling, super comfortable, affordable

Cons: Some people have noted holes developing in socks after continual wear

Buy the Sockwell Circulator Graduated Compression Socks on Amazon for $20

Roger Ailes

"Fair and Balanced," an upcoming biopic about the rise of Fox News and the fall of its disgraced former chief Roger Ailes, is putting together an all-star cast.

Variety reported on Wednesday that "The Crown" star John Lithgow will play Ailes in the movie, and he'll be joined by an already impressive lineup of co-stars who are playing the likes of former Fox News hosts Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson.

The drama will be directed by "Trumbo" and "All the Way" director Jay Roach and does not currently have a release date.

Below is everyone who has been cast in the movie and who they are playing:

Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly

Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, who now works for NBC, told investigators in 2016 that Ailes made unwanted sexual advances toward her in 2006.

Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson

Variety reported earlier this month that Kidman would be playing former Fox News host Carlson, who filed a harassment lawsuit in 2016 against Ailes that prompted more revelations and led to Ailes' eventual downfall.

Big Bang theory

As the year flies by, the list of canceled TV shows piles up.

While there's been somewhat of a quiet period since May, some networks are still cutting shows throughout the summer.

The most recent cancellation comes Netflix, which got rid of two talk shows in August: "The Break with Michelle Wolf" and "The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale."

ABC also canceled the previously renewed "Roseanne" revival in late May, after Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. However, ABC announced a spin-off called "The Conners" without Barr coming this fall.

Amazon kicked off the year with a slew of cancellations, announcing the end of three quirky comedies, including the Golden Globe nominee "I Love Dick" and the comedian Tig Notaro's semi-autobiographical show, "One Mississippi." It canceled Golden Globe nominee "Mozart in the Jungle" in April, after four seasons, and recently canceled "Transparent," which will end after the upcoming fifth season.

The long-running "The Jerry Springer Show" is ending after 27 seasons and 4,000 episodes. NBC's "Timeless," was also canceled for the second year in a row. NBC reversed its first decision to cancel the show last year after fan outcry. However, fans may have a movie to look forward to that gives the series a proper finale, though no official decision has been made.

We'll update this list as more are announced.

Here are all the shows that have been canceled this year, including those from networks and Netflix:

10 signs your home might have bed bugs

0
0

bed bugsBed bugs are flat, oval insects that hide in household furniture and feed on human blood. Just the thought of them is enough to make some people itch.

While they don’t carry any diseases and generally aren’t dangerous, bed bugs can be annoying and stressful to live with.

Here are a few signs of a bed bug infestation that you should never ignore.

1. You wake up with itchy red spots.

The most noticeable sign of a bed bug problem may be found on your skin.

Bed bug bites are typically small and red, and can be itchy. The bite might also become inflamed. However, not all people react to bed bug bites by experiencing a red spot or itchy area.

"People may have bed bugs and not know it because many people have no physical reaction to bed bug bites," Orkin Entomologist Dr. Ron Harrisontold AOL. "That’s why it’s important for people everywhere to inspect for bed bugs regularly."

2. And you notice those bites are in a line across your skin.

One hallmark of a bed bug problem is waking up with a very distinctive bite pattern on your skin.

According to the NHS,bed bug bites often occur in a line. This means that you might be able to differentiate them from the bites of fleas or mosquitoes, which don’t normally appear in such a formation.

3. You notice an unexplained musty odor.

If you detect an unfamiliar and musty odor in your home, it could be a sign of a bed bug infestation.

The NHS advises thatan unpleasant, musty scent in your bedroom could signal the presence of the pesky critters. This is because bed bugs release pheromones that can be quite strong when large amounts of the insects are present.

Prosecutors went to extraordinary lengths to document Paul Manafort's life of luxury. Here are the custom suits, lavish cars, and sprawling properties they tried to show the jury.

During the tax evasion trial of President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort, prosecutors entertained the jury with details of the political consultant's lavish lifestyle.

They said Manafort earned more than $60 million working on political campaigns in Ukraine, and detailed the ways he used that money to buy a closet full of custom-made suits, luxury cars for his wife and kids, and homes up and down the East Coast.

But when one of his clients fled to Russia and the consulting work dried up, Manafort lied about his wealth to avoid paying his taxes, prosecutors said.

Manafort pleaded not guilty, but the jury found him guilty on August 21 on two counts of bank fraud, five counts of tax fraud, and one count of failing to disclose foreign bank accounts. They were unable to reach a verdict on the other 10 counts he was accused of, and the judge declared a mistrial on those charges.

Here are the extravagant items prosecutors accused Manafort of spending all that money on.

  • Sometimes the difference between popular destinations in the summer versus the off-season can be stark.
  • Iceland sees a huge dip in tourists in the winter months.
  • Bali's beaches are virtually empty during the off-season.

Tourism levels vary greatly from season to season, and photos show just how big the difference is.

While there are a few cons to traveling during the off-season, the biggest difference is the amount of people that you'll be surrounded by on your trip, which is why some people actually prefer traveling during shoulder or off-season.

Here are some popular destinations that experience wildly different amounts of tourists based on the time of year you visit.

Coney Island in New York City is packed throughout the summer months.

Around 6 million people gather on Coney Island's shores during the summer months before winter strikes. And they're often there rain or shine.

In the winter, it gets hardly any visitors.

When it's cold out, Coney Island doesn't see many tourists at all. In fact, its beaches and amusement park, a main draw, are closed September through May.

Venice, Italy, is a super popular destination in the summer.

Venice, Italy, sees so many tourists annually that they have tried to ban cruise ships and restrict visitor numbers.

The city gets 30 million visitors each year, most of which come between the months of June and August.

24 surprising athletes who have made an insane amount of money

sam bradford cardinals

We tend to think of the best athletes in sports as the highest-paid and best-compensated.

And LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Roger Federer do rank highly in career earnings in their respective sports.

But every sport has some surprising athletes who have made a ton of money, despite not ranking as perhaps the best at what they do or sustaining greatness over a long period of time.

We went through the career earnings of major sports and found a few athletes that would surprise even hardcore fans with how much money they've made. Of course, "surprising" also depends on the sport. For instance, only one golfer (Tiger Woods) has ever made over $100 million in winnings, while it's not uncommon for MLB or NBA players to make well over $100 million in their careers.

Below are 24 surprising athletes who have made a ton of money in their sports.

Data via Spotrac, PGA Tour, ATP, and WTA.

24. Agnieszka Radwanska — $27.6 million

Sport: Tennis

Age: 29

All-time rank in sport: 6th

One thing to know: Radwanska hasn't made a major final since Wimbledon in 2012, when she lost to Serena Williams. Ranked as high as No. 2 in the world in 2012, Radwanska hasn't yet won a tournament this year.

23. Tomas Berdych — $28.9 million

Sport: Tennis

Age: 32

All-time rank in sport: 9th

One thing to know: Like many of the men in tennis, with the Big 4 dominating, Berdych hasn't completely broken through. Since losing to Rafa Nadal in the Wimbledon final in 2010, Berdych has made five major semifinals but hasn't won one yet.

22. David Ferrer — $31.2 million

Sport: Tennis

Age: 36

All-time rank in sport: 7th

One thing to know: From 2007 to 2016, Ferrer lingered mostly in the top 10, getting as high as third in the world. But since sliding out of the top 10 in May of 2016, Ferrer has fallen to 148th in the world. Still, longevity, including 27 career titles (but no majors) has helped make him one of the highest-paid players in the history of the game.

7 reasons why you might gain weight over the summer — and how to easily get back on track

0
0

ice creamWhile winter gets a bad rep for weight gain — from sugar cookies to cranberry sauce to all of the hearty casseroles that inexplicably taste better when there’s a chill to the air — summer can also wreak havoc on your eating patterns.

There are a number of reasons why summer can actually promote gaining weight instead of shedding it. Summer weight gain is also pretty common, and it is usually not something to fret over.

We’ve rounded up a few reasons why the sweltering months might actually encourage weight gain — and a few tips from experts on how to get healthy this fall.

We have a vacation mindset.

With the lazy, hazy days of summer in full swing, it can be difficult to establish a routine. The season is peppered with weddings, long weekends, and trips to the beach, which can make meal prepping and staying healthy an afterthought. Eating well and exercising regularly can be made even more difficult in the summer months for parents with kids who are suddenly home all of the time.

You can combat this in the fall by getting back on a routine and getting back to cooking at home.

It’s too uncomfortable to work out outdoors.

In the summertime, many of us are already sweating enough with poor air conditioning - the notion of splurging for a gym membership to sweat some more seems ludicrous. It’s also difficult to work out outside with temperatures in the 80s and 90s.

It can be a little easier to work out outside when the temperature is a little more manageable.

The most refreshing drinks are high in calories.

An ice-cold lemonade tastes best in the summer months, but it has nearly 100 calories. As for more adult summer beverages, those are even worse.  Amy Goodson, a sports nutritionist for the Dalla Cowboys, explained to Health.com that a piña colada or Long Island iced tea "can clock in at 600 to 800 calories."

In any season, staying healthy means drinking mostly water.

16 women throughout history who famously fought for equality

0

Susan B Anthony grave i voted stickersOn August 26th, 1920 the 19th Amendment of the US Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote. Here are 16 influential women from the 18th century through today who have championed the cause of equality, raising their voices for others in the fight against sexism, racism, and marginalization.

1. Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) fearlessly fought for gender and racial equality.

Sojourner Truth was an African-American abolitionist who was a lifelong defender of gender equality. Though she was born into slavery, Truth escaped to freedom with her young daughter at the age of 29.

In 1828, she became the first black woman to win a custody court battle against a white man, and was able to recover her son from slavery. At the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention of 1851, Truth delivered a speech titled "Ain’t I a Woman?" that stirred hearts and became widely told during the Civil War era.

Truth was fearless in her fight for racial equality. She recruited black troops for the Union Army and attempted to secure land grants for former slaves after abolition. In the 1860s, she often rode streetcars in Washington D.C. to promote desegregation and publicly protest racism.

2. Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was a powerful social activist.

Susan B. Anthony was a social activist and icon in the early women’s rights movement. Raised by a family of Quakers, Anthony grew up handing out anti-slavery petitions as a child and teenager.

Though she was a lifelong supporter of gender and racial equality, Anthony and close friend Elizabeth Stanton diverged from the American Woman Suffrage Association when the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified in 1870. Controversially, they posited that no more men should be allowed to vote until women and men — of all races — could also vote.

In 1872, Anthony was arrested for attempting to vote. The trial would, years later, lead to her presentation to Congress introducing the 19th Amendment. Though it was not ratified until 1920, it was widely known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment.

3. Ida B. Wells (1862-1931) was a founding member of the NAACP.

Ida B. Wells was an African-American journalist and educator who was also an early civil rights leader. She was one of the founding members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Similarly to Sojourner Truth, Wells was born into slavery. Later freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, she lost the majority of her family to yellow fever when she was only 16 years old. She spent most of her life working as a teacher and investigative reporter, documenting lynching and racial violence in the US during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

7 times customers turned on the companies they once loved

Companies

  • Companies keep customers by providing exceptional products or services that exceed expectations.
  • In turn, companies depend on loyal customers to keep their cash flowing and their businesses thriving.
  • But it can often take only one controversial incident to turn companies’ most dedicated fans against them, costing them millions.
  • Here are 7 companies that found themselves in a scandal that moved customers to turn on them immediately.

The goal of successful companies is not only to satisfy the value they promised to their customers in whatever product or service they’re offering, but also to exceed expectations and keep those customers coming back.Repeat customers who become brand loyalists are often the golden ticket to success.

Tesla and Apple are prime examples of great customer retention. Tesla has multiple fan clubs,  such as the Tesla Motors Club and the Model 3 Owners Club, and the average American household has more than two Apple products, according to a CNBC survey from 2017 that polled 800 people.

When a company enjoys a client base of  devoted fans, it can generally count on consistent sales.

That is, unless the customers turn against the brand. Over the past few decades, some  companies have suffered severe turns of fortune when their most rabid fans turned against them.

People abandon once-beloved companies for various reasons. A brand may have a drop in product quality, corruption may come to light, or a company could fail to keep up with cultural trends.

Whatever the reason for the change of heart, when a company’s fans turn into foes, some brands never recover.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia

According to a report issued by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Martha Stewart was charged with insider trading based on her sale of thousands of shares of ImClone stock shortly before the company announced a new cancer treatment had been rejected by the FDA in 2001.

Stewart was convicted and hit with a five-month jail term and a $30,000 fine, ABC News reported. But the financial losses didn’t stop there. In 2004, Stewart owned 60% of Martha Stewart Omnimedia. ABC News reported that her company’s value dropped 50% after Stewart’s insider trading scandal, netting the founder’s personal loss at more than $325 million in company holdings.

Today, Town & Country estimates Stewart’s net worth at $300 million, down from about $1 billion in 2000 — though this is likely also a reflection of the decline of the magazine industry as a whole.

BP

In the spring of 2010, a deadly blowout at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig led to one of the worst petroleum spills in history. Nearly 210 million gallons of oil poured into the Gulf of Mexico, CNN reported.

Then-CEO of BP Tony Hayward drew criticism during the disaster by telling The Today Show, "I'd like my life back."

Eleven people and hundreds (if not thousands) of animals lost their lives to this disaster that BP was responsible for as operator of the oil rig at the time. Hayward later apologized for the insensitive remark and promised that BP's priority was to restore the lives of people living in the Gulf region.

2018 estimates say the total cost of the spill to BP is expected to reach $65 billion, according to Reuters.

A study published in 2014 in Harvard Business Review examined the effects of the spill on BP's sales. The researchers found that initially, sales dropped by 3.6% after the spill, as customers "punished" the company for the disaster. However, this effect peaked in August of that year, about four months after the leak began.

Ratners

Back in the late 20th century, there were hundreds of Ratners jewelry shops spread throughout Great Britain and the US, according to The Guardian. It was a multimillion-dollar jewelry chain, until Ratners' CEO made a fatal comment about the quality of his company's products.

During a speech at a conference in 1991, Gerald Ratner made a joke that one of his own company's products was "total crap," the Birmingham Post reported.

A year after the 1991 speech took place, Ratners had shut down 330 locations, fired more than 2,000 employees, and watched its profits plummet, according to the Independent. Eventually Ratners replaced its founder and changed its name to Signet Group, BBC reported.

If you shopped at these 16 stores in the last year, your data might have been stolen

Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen

  • Data breaches are on the rise. Since January 2017, at least 16 retailers were hacked and likely had information stolen from them.
  • A report from cybersecurity firm Shape Security showed that almost 90% of the login attempts made on online retailers' websites are hackers using stolen data.
  • Many of these breaches were caused by flaws in payment systems that were taken advantage of by hackers.

At least 16 separate security breaches occurred at retailers from January 2017 until now. Many of them were caused by flaws in payment systems, either online or in stores.

Data breaches are on the rise for both retailers and other businesses.

A recent report published by cybersecurity firm Shape Security showed that 80% to 90% of the people that log in to a retailer's e-commerce site are hackers using stolen data. This is the highest percentage of any sector.

These data breaches are a real danger for both companies and customers and can affect the trust shoppers have in brands.

According to a study by KPMG, 19% of consumers would completely stop shopping at a retailer after a breach, and 33% would take a break from shopping there for an extended period.

Here are 16 retailers that have been affected by data breaches since January 2017:

Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen

Darden Restaurants announced on Wednesday it was notified by government officials on August 16 that it had been the victim of a cyberattack.

Customers who visited Darden-owned Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen between November 3, 2017 and January 2, 2018 may have had their credit-card information stolen. Darden estimates that 567,000 payment card numbers could have been compromised.

Customers affected would have visited a Cheddar's location in any one of these states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Macy's

Macy's confirmed that some customers shopping online at Macys.com and Bloomingdales.com between April 26 and June 12 could have had their personal information and credit card details exposed to a third party.

Macy's did not confirm exactly how many people were impacted. However, a spokesperson for the company said the breach was limited to a small group of people.

Macy's said in a statement: "We have investigated the matter thoroughly, addressed the cause and, as a precaution, have implemented additional security measures. Macy’s, Inc. will provide consumer protection services at no cost to those customers. We have contacted potentially impacted customers with more information about these services."

Adidas

Adidas announced in June that an "unauthorized party" said it had gained access to customer data on Adidas' US website. Currently, the company believes only customers who shopped on and purchased items from the US version of Adidas.com may have been affected by the breach.

The data that is potentially at risk includes customer contact information, like email addresses and physical addresses, as well as login information, like usernames and passwords. The passwords were stored with an encryption, however, which would need to be unencrypted before they could be used.

Adidas did not say exactly how many customers could have been affected by the breach, but an Adidas spokeswoman confirmed it is likely "a few million."
