The next major PlayStation 4 exclusive is a thrilling 'Spider-Man' game that lets you web sling around New York City — take a look

0
0

Good news, PlayStation 4 owners — there's a gorgeous new game from Sony that's only available on your platform of choice.

Better yet: It stars your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!

Spider-man (PS4)

In "Spider-Man," Sony has a gorgeous, charming, thrilling new game. I've been playing the new game for the past week, and have near-universally positive things to say about it.

Whether you like "Spider-Man" (the character) or not, there's something for everyone in the new "Spider-Man" game.

Check it out:

SEE ALSO: We just got our first real look at 'Cyberpunk 2077' — here are 31 things we learned about the futuristic video game people can't stop buzzing about

"Spider-Man" is set in a stunning re-creation of New York City's borough of Manhattan.

The version of Manhattan that "Spider-Man" lives in is almost as beautiful as the real thing. It's not quite as large, or as detailed, but it's got all the familiar landmarks you'd expect to see: Union Square, Central Park, and much more.

As a NYC resident, I found it shockingly easy to navigate the Manhattan of "Spider-man" without using the in-game map — while it's not a perfect re-creation of America's best city (I'm admittedly biased), it's a damn good one.

That it's possible to navigate solely based on my knowledge of the actual Manhattan is incredibly impressive, and a testament to the level of detail in "Spider-Man."

The biggest difference in Spider-Man's Manhattan is that the police are seemingly incapable of stopping near-constant terrorism.

In Spider-Man's Manhattan, heavily armed militias are a shockingly normal thing to see. That's largely due to the presence of supervillains like Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk (among others, who I won't spoil here).

We're talking about a superhero game here, so it's no huge surprise that the city is rife with bad guys to beat up as Spider-Man. That's the whole game — beating up bad dudes and slingin' webs!

That said, it's a little disconcerting that the police are so dependent on Spidey.

It's insanely fun to just swing around Manhattan.

It's hard to overstate how much fun basic movement is in "Spider-Man."

After over 20 hours with the game across the past week, I've yet to tire of high-velocity traversal. If you've seen any of the "Spider-Man" movies, you're already familiar with how swinging around Manhattan works — it's nearly identical in the PS4 game, but you're in control.

Spidey can run up buildings, dart forward through the air, and — of course — shoot lengthy lines of web that he can swing from. Manhattan feels like a giant playground that Spider-Man gets to play in.

Since he's Spider-Man, there's no negative impact from falling hundreds of feet to the ground, or from smashing into a building at full speed while swinging. In every possible instance, Spider-Man turns impediments into opportunities for more fluid movement.

While some startups are bootstrapped, many others seek external funding to help with operating costs and growth plans. Big venture capital firms like Andreessen Horowitz or Sequoia Capital and accelerators like Y Combinator dominate most people's conceptions of the "typical" investor.

A number of popular retail startups, however, have investors who you might recognize from ventures that couldn't be more different from the world of Silicon Valley: movies and TV, music, and sports.

When they're not starring in your favorite shows, singing on stage, or winning championships, these celebrities are funneling their money into up-and-coming companies. They see potential in and care about the startups that are helping people live the lives they want to lead.

Tropical Storm Gordon has slammed into the Gulf Coast, killing a child — here's what it looks like on the ground

tropical storm gordon

Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall Tuesday night, slamming into the Alabama-Mississippi border with heavy rains, a storm surge, and flooding.

Coastal communities such as Dauphin Island in Alabama and Shell Beach, Mississippi were among the hardest hit. The National Hurricane Center issued a storm surge warning for those and other areas along the Mississippi and Alabama coastlines, and sea levels rose as much as five feet there on Tuesday night.

Though Gordon weakened from a category 1 hurricane — which has a minimum wind speed of 74 miles per hour — to a tropical depression before it made landfall, the storm unfortunately still claimed the life of a young child when a tree fell on a mobile home in Pensacola, Florida, according to local officials.

Had the storm remained a hurricane when it hit land, it would have been the first hurricane to make landfall in the US in the 2018 hurricane season.

The storm is expected to continue lashing the region through Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center.  Some areas in the storm's track could see a total of over 12 inches of rain through the week.

Here's what the damage looks like in Alabama and Mississippi:

Luckily, by the time it made landfall on the Alabama-Mississippi border, the storm had been downgraded to a tropical depression, with wind speeds of around 30 miles per hour.

By Tuesday, the storm brought large waves, storm surges, and heavy rains to coastal counties around the Alabama-Mississippi border.

Here's what happens when you break up with a narcissist

0
0

fantasising

  • Breaking up with a narcissist is likely to be a draining experience.
  • Either they won't let you go without a fight, or they will discard you without looking back.
  • Both experiences are extremely hurtful.
  • Narcissists are highly skilled at making you feel as though you were the most important person in the world, only to tear it all away.
  • It's important to remember that however much it hurts right now, you're better off without the toxic person in your life.

It is challenging and exhausting being romantically involved with a narcissist, but they can also cause havoc when they leave. Breakups are always hard, but when you've been in a relationship with someone who uses others and is obsessed with themselves, it can be even harder.

On the surface, narcissists can seem charming, engaging and charismatic, which can make them difficult to leave in the first place.

Dr Judith Orloff, a clinical psychiatrist at the University of California Los Angeles, wrote in a blog post on Psychology Today that narcissists can make you "fall in love with them so hard that it feels like you're giving up a part of your heart to leave them," because they're very good at becoming the centre of your universe while you're with them.

Here's what to expect if you break up with a narcissist.

SEE ALSO: All the sacrifices you'll have to make for a relationship with a narcissist to work

It can feel brutal and sudden

One minute you may feel like everything your partner has ever wanted, and the next you're left wondering what on Earth went wrong. This is because narcissists are great at playing a part while they're getting something from their source, according to Orloff. But when they're done using you, they have no difficulty in casting you aside like a used tissue.

There will be no apologies or remorse, and you may well never hear from them again, regardless of how long your relationship was. If they do return, it will be because they've realized they can get something from you.

Be prepared for begging, pleading or bargaining

If you're the one who chose to leave, good for you because Orloff says that's hard to do. They are likely to give you the fight of your life because they're not done with you yet. Narcissists hate losing their supply, so they won't let you go easily.

Prepare for them to promise "to change." They might suddenly start doing things for you that you'd been complaining about. They may say "you'll be lost without me," or "you'll never find someone like me."

Don't listen, Orloff advises. It's just a trick to get you to come back to them out of fear.

What next? Establish no contact

No contact is exactly what it sounds like: no contact whatsoever. That means blocking their number, making sure any emails from their address go into your spam folder, and deleting them off social media. This is tough, but mental health counselor Dr Stephanie Sarkis explains in a blog post on Psychology today that it's the best option because sooner or later the narcissist will find a way to return.

The narcissist will try to contact you if you cut off their supply, and they know just what to say to make you come back. So you have to be brutal, and fast. It may be best to break up with them over text also, so they can't manipulate you any further.

If you left something at the narcissist's house, Sarkis adds, you should just leave it and let it go. Consider it a very small price to pay for your own sanity and well-being.

athleta performance underwear

For such a small piece of fabric, underwear can be deceivingly complicated. Depending on the clothes you wear over it, it can roll and bunch up, or feel increasingly restrictive throughout the day. After you wash it, it might pill, shrink, or stretch out.

Because no one likes thinking about their underwear as they work out, drive, walk, or conduct any other part of their daily life, finding high-quality, comfortable underwear is a must. It's easy to place it as a bottom priority as you shop for your closet, but we've found that you should actually do the opposite — if you set the foundation with a really comfortable piece of underwear that fits and supports you well, you'll be able to wear anything over it and feel great.

We've personally tried all the brands below and can attest to their comfort. Our favorites include everything from affordable $10 and $12 pairs to styles that cost upwards of $30 (but are completely worth the investment). Whatever your budget and style, you'll be able to find an online brand that prompts you to throw out your current collection of underwear.

Shop underwear at various price points from these 6 online brands:

LIVELY ($)

Led by a former Victoria's Secret senior merchant, LIVELY draws inspiration from lingerie, swimwear, and activewear to make comfortable and cute underwear that women can afford. You can pick up three pieces for $25, which, sure, is more expensive than the bulk deals at your regular retail store, but keep in mind these also won't fall apart after just a few washes. For their fit, comfort, and style, LIVELY's underwear is actually a bargain buy.

Price:

  • $10 for all women's styles (or 3 for $25)

Simplicity has always been Everlane's strong suit, and its underwear is just another example of basics done right. The soft, breathable, and slightly stretchy Supima cotton pieces come in an array of neutral colors, and what they lack in frilly bells and whistles they more than make up for in fit and comfort. Everlane's progressive manufacturing practices might further convince you of the value of its underwear and frankly, the rest of its offerings, too

Price:

  • $12 for all women's styles (or 3 for $27)
  • $18 for all men's styles (or 2 for $28)

Senegal is building a $2 billion futuristic city to help cut down on overcrowding in Dakar — check out its abstract design

0

Diamniadio Senegal

Senegalese leaders have long dreamed of building a new urban center amid mounting congestion and overcrowding in the capital city of Dakar. With a population that exceeds three million, the city plays host to skyrocketing housing costs and visibly high levels of unemployment. On any given day, locals encounter gridlocked roads, cramped minibuses, and large groups of unemployed workers lingering on street corners.

A new development promises to alleviate some of this pressure. After securing approval in 2013, developers are set to finish construction of Diamniadio, a $2 billion futuristic city less than 20 miles outside Dakar, by 2035. At the end of last year, the minister in charge of the project, Cheikh Kanté, said it was around 80% complete.

When finished, Diamniadio will span 4,000 acres and feature an industrial park, state ministries entertainment facilities, and a university for around 30,000 students. The project will also provide a mix of luxury, middle-class, and affordable housing for around 350,000 residents.

In addition to reducing congestion, the development is part of a national strategy to promote economic growth. Although Senegal's economy is growing at around 6% annually, its public debt has risen to nearly 61% of its GDP.

Critics of the project worry that the $2 billion price tag will sink the country even further into debt. They're also skeptical of its motivation, with many drawing connections between the project's timing and the reelection campaign of current president Macky Sall. Others fear that the development will be unaffordable for most Senegalese residents.

Despite these concerns, the city is a masterpiece in urban planning. One of its principal projects, the Diamniadio Lake City (DLC), combines contemporary, abstract architecture with an homage to the nation's rich history and culture. Check out the design below.

DLC's design was inspired by the Senegalese culture and landscape.

Its sharp curves and sloping lines mimic the amorphous patterns of algae in a nearby lake, as well as the silhouettes of traditional female sculptures.

To stay connected to the natural landscape, each structure is made with copper — an element found in the earth's crust.

Other materials used during construction include glass, steel, and concrete panels, which coalesce to form a shimmering mosaic of buildings.

Senegal's most famous tree, the baobab, was a key source of inspiration for the project.

Although they can live for 2,500 years, baobabs have been victims of climate change and rising global temperatures. DLC works to combat these forces by installing green roofs and implementing renewable energy technology. It's also one of the first LEED certified projects in the country.

10 rice alternatives to try if you want to cut down on carbs

0
0

turning rice into sharp kitchen knife video youtubeThough there's nothing wrong with healthy carbohydrates in moderation, with the popularity of low-carb and keto diets, some people might like to swap out high-carb items in their diet for other options.

Rice is a classic side dish and comfort food and has a place in a healthy diet, but it's definitely high in carbs. A single cup of cooked rice has37 grams of carbohydrates, according to the USDA.

Here are some low-carb alternatives to rice that are healthy, delicious, and won't leave your stomach growling.

1. Rutabaga rice is a low-carb rice alternative you probably haven't tried.

Rutabaga is a root vegetable that is sometimes used as a low-carb alternative to potatoes, but it's an equally good substitute for rice.

According to Self Nutrition Data, this veggie has justnine grams of net carbohydrates per cup, along with two grams of protein and plenty of vitamins. Opting for rutabaga rice is a good way to make sure you're staying under your carb limit while maximizing your nutrient intake.

2. Cauliflower rice is a nearly perfect dupe for normal rice.

It's white, it's fluffy, and looks just like rice if you squint. Cauliflower rice is a simple and tasty way to swap out grains for veggies. A single cup of cauliflower rice has justfour grams of carbs, compared to 37 grams of carbs in regular rice.

You can use cauliflower rice pretty much the same way you'd use regular rice: employ it as a base for stews, stuff it into taco shells, or serve it by itself with a bit of butter and salt.

3. Shirataki rice is also known as "miracle rice."

Shirataki rice is made with flour prepared from the root of the konnyaku plant. The miraculous part is that this rice actually only has10 calories and just one net carb per three ounce serving, according to Eat This Much.

How is this possible? Shirataki rice is composed entirely of soluble fiber, which can aid digestion and help you feel full. Try substituting it for pilaf rice or putting it in a stew instead of barley or brown rice.

With their spending power estimated to surpass $3.39 trillion this year, millennials remain one of the most important demographics for brands.

And that is why, love them, or hate them, if you're a brand you can't ignore them.

Ad agency Moosylvania has just released its annual ranking of the 'Top 100 Millennial Brands.' This is the sixth year that the company has released such a ranking, based on interviews with over 3,000 people between the ages of 18 to 38.

While a lot of the highest ranked brands from previous years retain the top spots, this year's list has several significant new additions, including beauty brands like ULTA cosmetics and ELF cosmetics, among others.

"We can tell a lot when we see new brands break through the list,” said Norty Cohen, CEO of Moosylvania. "You’ll see a predominance of retail, fashion, beverage, cars and gaming."

Here are the top brands according to the survey.

Note: The rankings are Olympic Style, with several ties.

100. Wegman's

Headquarters: Rochester, New York

Place on last poll: N/A

Why it’s hot: The supermarket chain has an unbeatable corporate reputation and is known for treating its employees exceptionally well. The brand also has a do-good social agenda, and recently rolled out an app-based service to assist blind shoppers.

100. True Religion

Headquarters: Manhattan Beach, California

Place on last poll: N/A

Why it’s hot: The denim brand is on the comeback trail post its bankruptcy late last year, and its bet on model and millennial favorite Bella Hadid as its new face seems to be working.

Why it’s hot: Millennials care about brands with a purpose, and REI's focus on sustainability and the environment has surely helped it land a spot in this year's ranking.

16 celebrities who don't drink coffee

0
0

zendaya mtv tv and movie awards carpetIf you rely on a cup of coffee to get you going in the morning, or to help you push through that mid-afternoon slump, you probably can't imagine life without your daily dose of caffeine.

But plenty of people never drink coffee, whether it's because they feel they're too sensitive to the effects of caffeine or simply prefer a different morning beverage to start their day.

These are the famous people — from our current president to two of the three Kardashian sisters — that claim to never (or rarely) drink coffee … and some of them will surely surprise you.

Jennifer Lopez avoids caffeine for her skin's health.

Lopez is a style and beauty icon, so it's no secret why people always want to know her top secrets. And it turns out her strict diet and fitness routine excludes a morning Starbucks run.

"'I don't drink or smoke or have caffeine," Lopez reportedly told Us Weekly in 2016, adding, "That really wrecks your skin as you get older."

Kim Kardashian West enjoys coffee only when she's jet-lagged.

Few people are on the go as much as Kardashian West, but she doesn't immediately turn to her morning java for an energy boost. In 2015, she told Harper's Bazaar magazine, "I'm not really a coffee drinker. I like it, and I'll have some when I'm really jet-lagged, maybe once a month."

As for what she does drink in the morning, she said, "I try to drink water. I think after you have a baby you want everything to be as pure as possible."

She's also more of an iced tea fan, revealing, "I used to drink a ton of iced tea, but I've cut back. I had the craziest addiction to Equal — I'd put 10 Equals in every iced tea. My sister Kourtney would always say, ‘You can't have that much sweetener!'"

Kourtney also skips coffee in lieu of tea.

Kim isn't the only Kardashian that doesn't start her day with coffee — older sister Kourtney doesn't, either. In a post on her official app in 2017, the mom of three shared, "First off, I'm allergic to coffee — it makes me insane! I get really hyper and really on edge when I drink it, so I stopped drinking it when I was 21 or 22."

Instead, she prefers green tea, sharing that she'll enjoy a "hot green tea late in the late morning or early noon," and she loves "a cup with honey and a little splash of almond milk," adding, "that's my thing at a restaurant."

5 ways to make your outfit look more expensive than it is

0

Fur Coats

When it comes to style, many of us have champagne taste with beer pockets. While we'd all love to splurge on $1,000 dresses, our bank accounts usually lead us to the clearance section. And there's no shame in being a bargainista, because you don't need an expensive price tag to have fashion week-worthy style.

INSIDER talked to celebrity stylist and author Caroline Vazzana for some tips and tricks on making your outfit look more expensive — without emptying your bank account.

Add a statement piece.

When it comes to enhancing your look, Vazzana suggests adding an eye-catching accessory to make your outfit appear more polished and put together.

"By adding a statement piece of jewelry, a beautiful handbag or a classic shoe you can easily make a simple outfit look and feel more expensive," she said. "I always feel that gold colored jewelry gives an outfit a more luxe feel."

Play with your hairstyle.

While most people put all of the attention into their outfits, sometimes all you need to do is switch up your hairstyle. Vazzana suggests trying out new looks, which can be as simple as putting your hair into a sleek bun, to give your style a more posh feel. She also recommended playing with new and larger earrings to give your hairstyle an added statement.

Rock som faux fur.

As more and more brands go faux with their fur, it's the perfect time to snag yourself a piece. One of the best parts about faux fur is that it's a fraction of the cost of real fur, but it still gives your outfit a luxurious appeal.

"You can find inexpensive pieces that will really pull a look together and make it feel luxe," said Vazzana.

Faux fur can be found in just about any store, so grab a statement faux fur coat or handbag to give your style a sophisticated touch at bargain prices.

The best men's T-shirts you can buy

0
0

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best t shirt for men

The Insider Pick:

  • In the past hundred years, the T-shirt has evolved from an unseen undergarment into one of the most popular and prominent articles of clothing a man wears.

  • The Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Tee is our top pick because the shirt is comfortable, flattering, and made to last.

In the course of any given day, I go through an average of three T-shirts. Which might seem (and might be) excessive, but it will make sense if I lay things out for you. In the morning, after my son wakes me up with loving taps on my forehead sometime in the six o'clock hour, I slip on the T-shirt I was wearing right before bed the night prior and head downstairs for coffee and playtime and such. I'll sometimes change into a different T-shirt when I get dressed for work, but as I work from home, usually I just put on real pants and step into my office.

Midday, I go for a run, during which I wear a shirt specifically designed for athletics and which we're not featuring here. Most of my running shirts are great performance-wise but are about as stylish as neon Crocs. After exercising and showering, I put on another T-shirt which, depending on the shape of the rest of the day, may serve through to the next morning, or which may be replaced yet again.

So I own and wear a lot of T-shirts. If you're looking to add a few fine T-shirts to your wardrobe, you've come to the right guy. Today, I've selected six of the best men's T-shirts that are perfect for guys who treat this noble garment not as a layer, but as the grace note to the ensemble. Oh, and I also threw in one that is ideal for layering. And one that's best suited to lazy days spent at home. And one that looks good enough to wear out to a coffee shop or bar but that's also ready for an impromptu hike or pickup ball game.

One note before we start our odyssey: Except where a brand's product name is specified otherwise, I'll be using the term "T-shirt." Not tee, not t shirt, but just T-shirt. After all, these garments are named for their T-shape, and they are shirts.

Here are the best T-shirts you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best men's T-shirt overall

Why you'll love it: You can feel the quality of the Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Tee the first time you put one on, and you'll enjoy the shirt for years to come.

As the name suggests, the Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Tee is made from 100% pima cotton. Pima is American cotton prized for its long fibers that allow for a tight, durable weave and that yield an amazing softness despite that durability.

Also as the name suggests, the hem of this shirt has a curved arc along the front and back that adds a bit of stylish accent, hides your stomach when you lift your hands, and helps keep the T-shirt in place should you ever tuck it in.

The Pima Curved Hem Tee comes in a dozen different colors, all of which are muted yet masculine. And it arrives pre-shrunk, so you should choose a size that will fit you well right out of the box. Oh and one more note: Not only is this Buck Mason shirt made with American cotton, but it's made in America, too.

A writer with Time Magazine was effusive in his praise for Buck Mason T-shirts, saying they have a "perfect fit" and held up well even after repeated washings.

Pros: Comfortable from day one, well-made and durable, available in many colors

Cons: I haven't found one yet, folks...

Buy the Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Tee for $28

The best men's T-shirt for casual comfort

Why you'll love it: The Everlane Cotton Crew is comfortable the first time you put it on, but even softer and more comfy the hundredth time.

To be honest, there's nothing all that interesting about the appearance of the Everlane Cotton Crew T-shirt. Sure, it comes in 14 different solid colors and in a few two-color striped patterns as well, but the shirt's cut, length, collar, and really all of its design elements are rather basic and certainly just what you'd expect from any good slim-fit T-shirt.

It's how the Everlane Cotton Crew feels that sets this shirt apart. Made from a durable mid-weight cotton that softens over time, the more you wear and wash an Everlane T-shirt, the more comfortable it will get. As a go-to hang around the house or walk the dog shirt, there are few better options out there. And given how well these T-shirts hold up over time, the $20 price tag is more than fair.

One Everlane customer called his Cotton Crew a "great everyday shirt" that was comfortable and clearly of "great quality." Another said he "loved the fit... and the feel" of the T-shirt, a garment he had grown to "treasure."

A quick note to keep in mind for sizing: Some customers felt the shirt ran a bit too long.

Pros: Fabric softens over time, available in solid and stripes, good price point

Cons: Shirts run a bit long

The best men's V-neck T-shirt

Why you'll love it: The Mott & Bow V-Neck Driggs will fit most men to a T, if you'll pardon the pun, thanks to the "not too slim, nor too loose" cut.

Finding a T-shirt that fits your body well, that both looks good and feels comfortable, can be a harrowing journey. Many T-shirts are too tight for one body type; some are too baggy for others. Few manage to suit myriad men's torsos with a fit that's flattering and comfortable, but into that narrow space marches the (still relatively) new line of T-shirts from Mott & Bow.

The V-Neck Driggs T-shirt has a cut the company describes as "not too slim, nor too loose," and while I take issue with the company's grammar ("neither too slim, nor too loose" or "not too slim, or too loose" for the record. Also, that comma is superfluous), I'm a fan of its wares.

The Mott & Bow V-Neck Driggs shirt is woven in Peru using cotton jersey fibers that give the garment a soft, flexible feel. It's a great shirt to wear on days when you want to stay comfortable while active, such as when you're traveling, touring a city, or spending a long evening with friends. And while $32 per shirt starts to edge out of my usual comfort zone for spending money on a T-shirt, these are worth it. They weather well.

Several writers and editors from Business Insider also tested out Mott & Bow T-shirts and found them "comfortable with a cool and lightweight feel" and durable in construction.

Pros: Cut fits many body types, preshrunk, soft and flexible feel

Cons: Slightly overpriced

The rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes, who started Theranos when she was 19 and became the world's youngest female billionaire before it all came crashing down

Elizabeth Holmes

In 2014, blood-testing startup Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, were on top of the world.

Back then, Theranos was a revolutionary idea thought up by a woman hailed as a genius who styled herself as a female Steve Jobs. Holmes was the world's youngest female self-made billionaire, and Theranos was one of Silicon Valley's unicorn startups.

Then it all came crashing down.

The shortcomings and inaccuracies of Theranos's technology were exposed, along with the role Holmes played in covering it all up. Theranos and Holmes were charged with massive fraud, and the company was forced to close its labs and testing centers.

In June, Theranos announced Holmes was stepping down as CEO, and the Justice Department announced that a grand jury had indicted Holmes and former Theranos president and COO Sunny Balwani for "alleged wire fraud schemes." Now, Theranos will shut down for good after it finishes repaying its creditors over the coming months.

This is how Holmes went from precocious child, to ambitious Stanford dropout, to an embattled startup founder charged with fraud.

When she was 7, Holmes tried to invent her own time machine, filling up an entire notebook with detailed engineering drawings.

At the age of 9, Holmes told relatives she wanted to be a billionaire when she grew up. Her relatives described her as saying it with the "utmost seriousness and determination."

That same year, Holmes wrote a letter to her father: "What I really want out of life is to discover something new, something that mankind didn't know was possible to do."

11 tips for making traveling with a baby easier

0

airplane baby window flightWhen my daughter was six months old, we took her to Chicago for a family get together. It was her first time on a plane and our first time with a baby on a plane. It was only a two-hour flight from New York to Chicago and yet, I frantically packed and repacked the diaper bag with multiple changes of clothing, dozens of diapers, and four meals worth of food. She slept the entire time.

Traveling and vacationing with a baby is not as bad as people make it out to be. Just prepare ahead of time, without going overboard of course, adjust your mindset, and keep your expectations low.

Here are 11 hacks to help make the unpredictable part of baby travel slightly easier.

Pack lots of snacks.

Now, I'm no seasoned vet when it comes to this mom thing — I've only been doing it for about four years. But if there's one thing I've learned on all the family trips we've taken with our two kids, it's snacks are our friends. Under normal circumstances, we obviously don't allow our kids to eat too many snacks before breakfast, but when you're traveling, especially if it's during weird hours, and your kid starts to lose it, having an arsenal of snacks ready to shove in their little face will save you. I've learned this hard way.

Bring lots of diapers and extra clothes.

Extra clothes and diapers go a long one, but don't go overboard. Pack your diaper bag like you normally do for the day plus one extra outfit and three to five extra diapers, depending on the length of your trip. That is more than enough supplies for at least two major diaper explosions.

Pack your baby's “sleep” toy or blanket, if they have one.

If your baby is not good at sleeping in other places besides their crib, this may help. My son was this exact same way and it led to some very long and exhausting nights away from home. Then a friend suggested I bring his blanket the next time we go away so that he at least recognizes something, and it actually worked. Now, whenever we travel anywhere overnight, I always pack the blue and white blanket he's had since birth and he manages to fall asleep a little bit easier.

Science says people decide these 11 things within seconds of meeting you

woman boss work

  • People develop first impressions of you even before you open your mouth.
  • Research demonstrates that your appearance changes how trustworthy, promiscuous, and powerful people think you are.
  • You can change some people's first impressions of you by changing your behavior and how you present yourself.

A lot of first impressions come from things we can't control at all — our natural scent, how "baby-like" our faces are, and whether or not we need to wear glasses or are bald.

For instance, men who have feminine facial features, like thinner eyebrows and a pointier chin, are more likely to seem trustworthy.

There's not much folks who want to give off a good first impression can do about their facial structure, but they can change their body language by enacting small changes like smiling more, making more eye contact, and nodding.

Keep reading below to find out what other judgements people make about you within seconds of meeting you:

If you're high-status

A Dutch study found that people wearing name-brand clothes — Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger, to be precise — were seen as higher status than folks wearing non-designer clothes.

"Perceptions did not differ on any of the other dimensions that might affect the outcome of social interactions," the authors wrote. "There were no differences in perceived attractiveness, kindness, and trustworthiness."

Just status.

If you're trustworthy

People decide on your trustworthiness in a tenth of a second.

Princeton researchers found this out by giving one group of university students 100 milliseconds to rate the attractiveness, competence, likeability, aggressiveness, and trustworthiness of actors' faces.

Members of another group were able to take as long as they wanted. Their judgments were the same for most of the traits as the folks who had only a tenth of a second.

Much of that judgement is based on things you can't really change. For instance, research suggests that more feminine, baby-like, and happy faces are perceived to be more trustworthy.

You can alter your body language to boost others' trust in you. As Business Insider previously reported, try smiling more, leaning forward, looking people in the eye, and mimicking the other person's body language.

Your sexual orientation

People can read a man's sexual orientation in a twentieth of a second — the minimum amount of time it takes to consciously recognize a face.

"The rapid and accurate perception of male sexual orientation may be just another symptom of a fast and efficient cognitive mechanism for perceiving the characteristics of others," wrote study authors Nicholas O. Rule and Nalini Ambady.

These are the world's 7 worst aircraft carriers that are currently in service

0

Chakri Naruebet 2001 thailand aircraft carrier

There are at least 42 commissioned aircraft carriers in service with at least 14 navies around the world.

Aircraft carriers come in many shapes and sizes: some carry large aircraft fleets of fighters and electronic attack planes, some only carry helicopters; some are nuclear powered, some are fueled by gas; some have vertical take-off and landing, some have short take-off and vertical landing, some have catapult assisted take-off and arrested recovery, where a tail hook snags a cable to catch the plane on landing.

Whatever the specifications, a carrier is not much use to any navy if it's breaking down or not able to launch the full range of combat sorties it was built to perform.

So we put together a list of seven of the worst commissioned flattops, which have a history of breaking down or limitations on the missions that these ships were built to perform.

Check them out below:

SEE ALSO: We toured the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world's largest aircraft carrier, which can house 75 aircraft

SEE ALSO: Step aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's aircraft carrier that's considered one of the worst in the world

SEE ALSO: China's newest aircraft carrier is actually very outdated — but its next one should worry the US Navy a lot

China's Liaoning (16).

Commissioned in 2012, the Liaoning is a Kiev-class aircraft carrier that Beijing tricked Ukraine into selling by sending a Hong Kong businessman to purchase it under the guise of it being used as a casino in 1998.

The Liaoning was later commissioned in 2012, becoming China's first aircraft carrier.

But just a few years later, the Liaoning was spewing steam and losing power, and in at least one incident, a steam explosion blew out the ship's electrical power system

Since then, the Liaoning has been rather unreliable, like most Soviet Kiev-class carriers, and used mostly as a training carrier.

Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov (063).

The Kuznetsov is a Kiev-class carrier that is currently undergoing repairs and won't be ready for service until 2021.

In October 2016, the Kuznetsov was sailing to Syria through the English Channel on a combat deployment when it was spotted belching thick clouds of black smoke.

"The main problem with the ship is that is has a very problematic propulsion system," Dmitry Gorenburg, a senior research scientist at the Center for Naval Analyses, previously told Business Insider. "It's just unreliable."

Commissioned in 1995, the Kuznetsov experienced a serious breakdown in 1996, and wasn't available again until 1998.

The National Interest recently even placed the Kuznetsov on its list of 5 worst aircraft carriers ever built

Take a tour of the Kuznetsov here

Thailand's Chakri Naruebet (911).

Commissioned in 1997, the Chakri Naruebet was once a fleet carrier, but was later relegated to a helicopter carrier in 2006, mostly because of budgetary issues.

Although the Chakri Naruebet was used after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsnuami and in rescue operations after flooding in Thailand in 2010 and 2011, the carrier has mostly resided in port for much of its 20-year career with the Thai Navy.

So while the Chakri Naruebet has not necessarily suffered from design flaws or repeated maintenance issues, we included it on the list because it's simply not being used for what it was supposed to.

Drake's No. 1 hit single "In My Feelings" has racked up another milestone by being named Billboard's top-performing song of the summer.

"In My Feelings," the fifth single from Drake's fifth studio album, "Scorpion," also topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week for an eighth consecutive week. The song went viral early this summer on the strength of a video dance challenge that Will Smith ended up participating in.

Billboard reported that Drake has become the sixth artist to score two No. 1 singles on the outlet's songs of the summer chart, following up on his No. 1 2016 hit "One Dance." He joins Andy Gibb, Mariah Carey, Usher, Jay-Z, and Katy Perry on the list of artists with two career top songs of the summer.

Bizarre food items that disappeared from McDonald's menu (MCD)

McDonalds fish mcbites

  • McDonald's menu has changed a number of times since the chain was founded in 1955.
  • Some of the menu additions have survived until 2018, but many ended up being short-lived.
  • McDonald's discontinues foods for a number of reasons, whether it's because of poor sales, to make room for a different new item, or because it was a limited-edition product.
  • Regardless of the reason, you likely won't be able to try McDonald's Hula Burger, McLobster, or Cheddar Melt ever again.

McDonald's menu has seen some pretty big changes since the chain was founded in 1955.

While some of its menu additions have survived until 2018, many were short-lived. McDonald's discontinues items for a number of reasons, whether it's because of poor sales, to make room for a different new item, or because it was a limited-edition product.

Some experimental menu items actually end up costing chains millions, like McDonald's Arch Deluxe, a "gourmet" burger that aimed to appeal to a more adult crowd but failed miserably. McDonald's spent an estimated $150 million to $200 million advertising the Arch Deluxe's rollout, which, at the time, was the most expensive promotional campaign in fast-food history, The New York Times reported.

Other items are meant to be available only for a limited time, like McDonald's Superhero Burger, which promoted a new "Batman" movie in the 1990s. Sometimes, products' flavors just aren't a hit with customers, like the McGratin Croquette, which was made from deep-fried macaroni, shrimp, and mashed potatoes.

Here are some other McDonald's items that didn't make it:
