8 Cringeworthy High School Yearbook Typos [NSFW]

0
0

Hitter Yearbook TypoYearbooks are supposed to be a space for students to reflect on their time at school and celebrate their accomplishments of the past year.

However, for some students yearbooks have become a source of humor and humiliation, as simple typos create entirely new meanings for their year-end sendoffs.

Through Reddit, we've found some of the most cringeworthy examples of yearbook typos from around the country. Some are funny and some are mean, but all of them are certainly not what the author intended.

Warning: Some of these typos are not safe for work.

Her intentions were certainly in the right place.

Mom and Dad were just trying to say congrats!

Actually, flapjacks would make finals a lot better.

These Are The Best And Worst Things To Buy In July

0

tablet

The dealnews staff published more than 6,000 deals last July, which we've analyzed so that we can offer our readers a bit of advice while planning purchases this month.

And it's a particularly important month to do so, since a number of sales will appear to be better than they are.

So in order to protect your wallet and spend your money wisely, be sure to read through our July buying guide below for everything you need to know to shop smart this month.

SEE ALSO: Here's What You Should Or Shouldn't Have Bought In June

Shop Independence Day Sales For In-Season Items

The Fourth of July is an excellent time to score a discount on summer items while they're still in-season, which means you can finally find a deal on a grill during the holiday weekend; gas grills in particular experienced above average discounts last year.

Summer clothing will also see strong price cuts, with stores taking up to 62% off on average. Also be on the lookout for extra coupons that slash up to an additional 50% off sale prices. That said, keep in mind that the prices will only continue to drop as the season progresses; patio furniture, for example, saw better discounts in August last year.

Wait Until Labor Day For Bedding Sales

The one "usual suspect" for holiday weekend sales that we actually recommend skipping in July is bedding; for the past three years, Labor Day sales have taken much stronger discounts on these items than Independence Day promotions. If you wait until September, you'll find a much higher number of Editors' Choice sets, too.

Tablets Are So Hot Right Now

July is primed to be an excellent month for Android tablet deals, as we've recently seen an influx of high-quality discounts. In fact, the number of Editors' Choice deals on tablets quadrupled in the month of May, and the stream of sales has held strong through June.

While it tapered off slightly last month, there was still double the number of Editors' Choice deals than normal. Slate shoppers should look for sales from stores like Staples, Lenovo, Best Buy, Amazon, and Walmart. And if you're open to a refurbished or used model, then both Android tablets and iPads are fair game; keep an eye on CowBoom and eBay for these top-notch used deals.

6 Celebrity Endorsement Deals We'd Love To See

0
0

166932631

Earlier today, we took a look at some hot celebrities making a quick buck by endorsing brands. The perfect example: Pop diva Beyonce’s monster deal with Pepsi (PEP).

But let’s be honest — celebrity endorsements are often chosen without rhyme or reason. They’re just a quick way to boost a brand and make stars some extra cash. The choice of Beyonce, for example, is just a vague grab at coolness on Pepsi’s part.

Beyond that, Danica Patrick’s GoDaddy commercials make me want to root again the racing star, while Tiger Woods’ partnership with Nike (NKE) makes sense, but is also plain old boring.

Meanwhile, countless celebrities out there are actually perfect marriages for select companies.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at five honest celebrity endorsements that we would love to see … but probably never will.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Men’s Wearhouse

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has more than just acting skills — he has style. The onetime awkward child star has matured into a sophisticated, well-dressed swag machine. In fact, readers of Esquire voted him the “Best Dressed Man” just last year.

While good style, good looks and his simple “cool factor” could make Gordon-Levitt the face of just about any company, I think it would make far more sense to pair him up with one that actually cares about helping you look good.

Enter Men’s Wearhouse (MW). The retailer has been running the same ad campaign for years — a gray, bearded George Zimmer telling shoppers: “You’re gonna like the way you look. I guarantee it.” Until this month, that is, when the founder/spokesperson got the boot.

If you ask me, this is the perfect opportunity for a little rebranding. If you want to guarantee that I like the way I look, make me look like JGL.

Taylor Swift: eHarmony

First things first, before Taylor Swift lovers go crazy like they did over Abercrombie & Fitch‘s (ANFrecent t-shirt, let me clarify: I don’t mean this one in a bad way.

It’s just that … well … Taylor Swift simply has to be the spokesperson for eHarmony. No one represents love, or at least the desire for it, more than the break-up-song writer.

And we all know her past relationships — from Joe Jonas to Harry Styles to John Mayer to … OK, you get the point — simply haven’t worked out because they weren’t matched on 29 levels of compatibility!

Plus, Swift could be a face of inspiration to even the most desperate online daters. If eHarmony can keep find Taylor Swift a lasting love, it can work for any of us. All Swift needs to do is embrace her status as jilted young lover ready for an online dating fairy tale.

Seth Rogen: Medical Marijuana Inc.

Seth Rogen is best-known for two things: making funny movies and smoking weed. Well, or just one thing: making funny movies about smoking weed. Either way, why the heck is he one of the faces of Samsung (SSNLF)?

Instead, the two-time “Stoner of the Year” winner would be better off promoting Medical Marijuana Inc. (MJNA). He makes no secret of his use (and indeed his love) of the drug and can be found on Bro Bible demonstrating joint-rolling techniques.

Plus, Medical Marijuana Inc. sure could use some better marketing. On the company’s website, it explains its purpose:

“Our mission is to be the premier cannabis and hemp industry innovators, leveraging our team of professionals to source, evaluate and purchase value-added companies and products …”

Proud pothead Rogen would be much better at getting the message across: ”Let’s get high.”

15 Of The Coolest, Most Incredible Science Fair Projects You've Ever Seen

0

Shree Bose Google Science Fair's First ever grand prize winner

In honor of Google's announcement of the 15 finalists for its 2013 Science Fair, we compiled our list of the most wild, inspiring, and exciting science fair projects from years past.

These are 16 of the most impressive teenager-led science projects we could find. And they all began with a simple question and a love of science.

These aren't foam volcanoes. These are cancer preventing chicken marinades and self-driving cars, nuclear fusion reactors and microbes that "eat" plastic.

These teenagers have made world-changing discoveries at a time in their lives when many of us were just trying to get through geometry class.

Ria Chhabra found that fruit flies that eat organic produce are healthier.

The teen from Dallas, Texas settled a long-standing debate between her parents over the merits of organic produce by feeding organic and conventional foods to fruit flies.

She began the project while still in middle school, and eventually submitted it to the 2011 Broadcom Masters science fair and was named one of the fair's 30 finalists.

She found that organically fed flies lived longer, had more babies, and showed more resistance to stress. Her research garnered headlines and settled the argument between her proud parents.

Here is her game-changing paper, which she published in the journal PLoS ONE in January.

Chhabra told the New York Times that she is considering MIT and Brown University for college, though she "has not ruled any school in or out."

Daniel Burd bred microbes that "eat" plastic trash.

Plastic bags are cheap and handy, but they suck for the environment. They last for years before they finally break down and wreak a lot of havoc in the process.

Canadian high-schooler Daniel Burd wondered why we can't just isolate the microorganisms that slowly 'eat' the plastic and concentrate them to speed up the process. In just six weeks his microbes reduced the volume of plastic by 43%.

The technology has to be tested much further, and the microbes would have to be contained somehow, said Karl Burkhardt on Mother Nature Network.

He took home first prize in the Canada-Wide Science Fair for his research called Plastic Not Fantastic and gave both environmentalists and dolphins a new reason to be stoked.

Eesha Khare developed supercapacitor technology that in the future could charge a battery. Fast.

We're getting ever closer to the day when smartphones are sewn right onto our hands, but battery technology is still pretty lame. But the problem is not necessarily that batteries run out, its that they take so. Long. To. Charge.

Eesha Khare of Saratoga designed a supercapacitor that might cut that process down a lot... to 30 seconds. Important to note that Khare used her device to charge a tiny LED, not a bulky smartphone, but this is still a huge leap in the right direction.

The project earned Khare a $50,000 check and second place at Intel ISEF 2013.

This Is The Incredible Cafe At Microsoft Where The Food Is Better Than (Almost) Anything In Your Home Town For A Third Of The Price (MSFT)

Microsoft Cafe 16 08

Microsoft's corporate campus in Redmond, Washington has one of the best cafeterias we've ever eaten at.

It's called Cafe 16, and it just reopened after some renovations. We were on campus recently and got two excellent meals at Cafe 16.

The food isn't free at Microsoft, like it is at Google. But, the prices are great. A steak with asparagus and quinoa was just $6.50. A hand made personal pizza was only $5.50. And both of those meals tasted as good as anything you're going to find in the best local restaurant in your neighborhood.

If we worked at Microsoft we would definitely eat dinner and lunch here every day.

While we were on the campus, Microsoft had a photographer take photos of its cafe for us. The place is seriously awesome.

Behind that fountain, tucked into a totally normal looking Microsoft office, is Cafe 16.

Step inside, and this is the first thing you see. It's a bright, open cafe with a lot of food options.

The cafe was under construction for a while and is now being reopened with all sorts of fantastic food choices.

Need Hiring Help? Here's A How-To-Hire Deck From One Of The Valley's Hottest VC Firms

dan portillo

Greylock Partners is a pretty impressive venture capital firm.

The partners there bet on massively successful tech firms Facebook, LinkedIn, DropBox, Tumblr, and Airbnb back when they were tiny, risky startups.

The firm tells us one reason it's had so many startups do so well is that Greylock helps its portfolio companies hire.

What kind of help does it offer? What kind of insights into hiring does it provide?

Ordinarily, you'd have to be a brilliant entrepreneur willing to sell a portion of your fast-growing startup to find out.

Not today.

Today you get to see the PowerPoint deck Greylock's "VP of Talent," Dan Portillo, uses to coach up portfolio CEOs on hiring.

Portillo is famous for being the guy who staffed non-profit Mozilla between 2005 and 2010 – back when Mozilla's browser, Firefox, was kicking Microsoft's butt.

"When working with Greylock's 50+ portfolio companies, one of the most common requests I get is for advice on hiring new talent," Portillo tells us.

"I created this deck to serve as a resource not only for founders and hiring managers, but anyone who is part of the interview process."

12 Former Porn Stars That Now Lead Boring, Normal Lives

0

asia carrera after porn ends 10Ever wonder what happens to pornstars once the bright lights go out on their careers? What do they do when they retire from "The Business?"

They become real estate agents, nurses, Christian activists, stay-at-home moms, and private investigators.

The 2010 documentary "After Porn Ends" begged the question "Can they really live a normal life after porn?" and followed former pornstars in their new, mostly ordinary lives.

They could be your neighbor, and you probably wouldn't even know about their previous career between the sheets.

But the road to societal normalcy isn't always easy and often presents financial struggle, parent-child conflicts — like being recognized at their preteen daughter's track meet —  and relapses into the industry.

Still, few former pornstars in "After Porn Ends" say they have regrets.

We rounded up the 12 erotic actors and actresses turned contributing members of society — and the few who came out of retirement.

Asia Carrera was the first half-Asian female to become an A-list porn star, appearing in 389 videos.

The Mensa International member walked away from a full academic scholarship to college to instead pursue a career in porn. She enjoyed learning all the crew members' jobs in between scenes.

Today, Asia is a stay-at-home mother of two living in Mormon country in St. George Utah, where porn is illegal and she's less recognized.

21 Nearly Identical Pairs Of Movies That Came Out Around The Same Time

0

white house down olympus has fallen

Action thriller "White House Down" came out over the weekend, debuting to less than favorable box-office numbers.

The film earned nearly $10 million less than the $35 million analysts predicted the Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx hostage crisis would make.

Surely this wasn't because Channing Tatum's popularity has worn out at theaters.

He was one of the biggest box-office draws of 2012 AND crowned People's "Sexiest Man Alive."

Rather, the film's critics were turned off by how strikingly similar the film was to previous March Film District release, "Olympus Has Fallen."

In a bloated box-office summer where there are so many options to see, it's little surprise crowds would opt out of seeing something that looks vaguely familiar from months ago.

This isn't the first time two films with eerily similar plots have been released around the same time. We've rounded up a number of "twin" films that have come out months apart in theaters over the years.

Why does this happen so frequently?

It's the same reason we'll see multiple shows aboutvampires, finding truelove, and serialkillers flood the airwaves.

It's all about the competition.

Forbes contributor Mark Hughes summed it up best in a 2011 post on Quora saying sometimes it's just coincidence. However, it could be to piggyback off a competitor's potentially successful — or already successful — project. We often see this with knockoff direct-to-DVD films that sometimes confuse buyers.

"Other times, a studio/filmmaker finds out about another studio's/filmmaker's project and wants to match them, so both are hurrying to get their film out first. This might be a case of both knowing the topic and films will be popular, or they might think it's a good idea but only one can be a success, or it could be that they are counting on the success and critical acclaim of one to help the other. So in this case, it can sometimes be a zero-sum game and other times they expect a coattail effect or that in general one positive will lead to a second positive.

Sometimes a big film will come out and be a hit, so a smaller studio will hurry up and rush through creating their own film to cash in on it -- this happens with a lot of direct-to-DVD films, for example."

Read the rest of his explanation here.

1997: "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano" both revolve around the cast outrunning erupting volcanoes.

Box Office
"Dante's Peak": $178 million
"Volcano": $122.8 million

Fox got a little excited with its over-the-top posters for "Volcano." The Fox film did nowhere near as well as Pierce Brosnan's volcano epic in the states; however, the Los Angeles centered movie picked up overseas.

1998: The Earth was nearly destroyed in both "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact."

Box Office
"Armageddon": $553.7 million
"Deep Impact": $349.5 million

Bruce Willis saves the world from an asteroid in the first film, while Robert Duvall tries to stop a massive comet from colliding with the planet.

1998: "Antz" and "A Bugs Life" both follow life from an ant's point of view.

Box Office

"A Bug's Life": $363.4 million

Even animated distributors can't avoid releasing similar films. Disney and Pixar's bug film went up against Sylvester Stallone's ant crew and took him down.

In The Post-Script Of A Letter, Ernest Hemingway Explained His Deep Love Of Alcohol

0
0

Ernest Hemingway really loved his liquor.

He liked his Martinis dry, his Mojitos sweet, and was rumored to be drinking a quart of whiskey a day later in his life.

And now we have even more proof.

Shaun Usher  — who publishes the extraordinary site Letters Of Note— tweeted out a picture of Hemingway's postscript to a letter to Ivan Kashkin, a Russian translator and critic, in 1935.

Here it is in full:

"P.P.S. Don't you drink? I notice you speak slightingly of the bottle. I have drunk since I was fifteen and few things have given me more pleasure. When you work hard all day with your head and know you must work again the next day what else can change your ideas and make them run on a different plane like whisky? When you are cold and wet what else can warm you? Before an attack who can say anything that gives you the momentary well being that rum does? I would as soon not eat at night as not to have red wine and water. The only time it isn't good for you is when you write or when you fight. You have to do that cold. But it always helps my shooting. Modern life, too, is often a mechanical oppression and liquor is the only mechanical relief. Let me know if my books make any money and will come to Moscow and we will find somebody that drinks and drink my royalties up to end the mechanical oppression."

Apple's Radical Overhaul Of The iPhone's Software May Have Been Influenced By This Legendary German Designer (AAPL)

0
0

olt aicher olympic posterOne of the mny shocking changes in iOS 7, Apple's new version of the iPhone's software, is the new color palate.

Jony Ive, who led the design, threw away Apple's muted color set for something much more vibrant. It's almost a neon color scheme.

Apple blogger John Gruber and supremely talented software designer Craig Hockenberry talked about the influences for iOS 7 on Gruber's podcast

They mentioned the work of Otl Aicher as a likely influence.

Aichen's career-defining work came for the 1972 Olympics in Munich. He designed the images used to represent each sport in a simple way. The icons were designed as a universal language to help people get around the grounds of the games easily.

He also chose a set of colors for each sport. Those colors are quite bright, and to Gruber, they look a lot like the colors Ive used in iOS 7. The font style is also similar, with thin, sparse typography.

Apple has long used influence from classic designers.

The clocks used in the iPad were a copy and paste of the classic clocks designed by the Swiss Federal RailwaysIts hardware designs have leaned on the work of Dieter Rams and Braun

Therefore, it wouldn't be a shock if Ive was inspired by the classic design work of Aichen for iOS 7.

We've rounded up some of his work, so you can compare it to iOS 7.

First, a look at Apple's new icons for iOS.

And, here's a look at the quick access options in the new "control center" for iOS 7.

And here are some of the designs and colors from Aicher for the Olympics.

RANKED: The 30 Most Creative People In Social Media Marketing

0
0

draftfcb creative social media

Brands are finally beginning to understand that dedicating resources to reaching consumers on social media — be it Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or another platform du jour— is not only beneficial, but necessary.

But companies need to do more than simply pay for a Sponsored Tweet or have a Facebook fan page. At this point it is only the truly creative and innovative campaigns that get noticed.

You all saw Oreo's tweet during the Super Bowl blackout and Lay's 3.8 million-submission "Do Us A Flavor" competition on Facebook. Now it's time to meet the people who brought those campaigns to life.

We have compiled a list of the most creative people in social media. Our picks were selected from nominations by peers and competitors, and our own research.

While creativity is subjective, our ranking takes into account the type and size of clients (it's harder to be creative with large corporate clients than small startups), their history of innovation, respect in the field, and the ability to get talked about months, if not years, later. These people are ordered based on their contribution to the medium and history of influence.

30. Jonathan Nafarrete, director of social outreach at Blitz Agency

As brands begin to experiment with Vine, some have been more successful than others.

Playstation had one of the most impressive Vine six-second video campaigns we have ever seen. To introduce the video game "MLB 13: The Show" to the world, Playstation teamed up with Nafarrete (@Jonathan360) and Blitz to create the next generation of baseball cards on Vine.

Nafarrete and the Blitz team animated the faced (via Twitter avatars) of influential sports bloggers, baseball stars, and superfans and turned them into baseball cards for their favorite teams. The content was engaging, sharable, and created a lot of buzz for the game. (Read about the elaborate process here.)

He has also done work for Honda and Naked Juice.

Nafarrete is also known for his personal Instagram work for various brands.

Here's the baseball card Vine (click for animation):

29. Ginny Sidell, senior social strategist at DraftFCB Chicago

After working as an account supervisor at Edelman for almost five years, Sidell (@GinnyS) moved over to DraftFCB last year to take on social media strategy primarily for KFC.

In less than a year on KFC, she helped the chain's Facebook page grow more than 1.5 million likes and Twitter engagement has gone up almost 300%.

She scours the internet for any trends or fried chicken news/content to share with KFC fans, and identifies celebrities talked about the brand and engages with online. Sidell tweets creatively ("Eating KFC is like a hug in your mouth"), makes funny KFC ecards (garnering more than 1 million impressions), and even helps deliver KFC to influential followers in real time.

She gets how to build a brand's social media presence.

"The S&P should stay above 1525 given tentative signs of 10yr yields stabilizing around 2.5% and unshaken oil prices and Euro," wrote Bianco. "A further near-term jump in yields could spark fears of a surge and dislocate credit, FX, and commodity markets, but this is not likely."

However, he continues to be bullish on the long-run. He sees the S&P 500 at 2,000 by the end of 2015.

JP Morgan Funds Q3 Guide To The Markets

The second quarter ended with stocks tumbling, interest rates surging, and gold crashing.  All of this happened as the Federal Reserve laid out a timeline for the tapering, or gradual reduction of its stimulative bond-buying program.

Investors have a lot of things to consider before they make their next move.

To help with this, David Kelly and the market strategy team at J.P. Morgan Asset Management have built the best presentation on the state of the markets and the economy we have seen so far.

We learn that the stock markets look strong yet reasonably priced, the bond markets are rapidly evolving as rates rise, the U.S. economy is anemic yet recovering, Europe remains a mess but things are getting better, and China is growing quickly but decelerating.

The charts offer an elegant and in-depth look at everything.

Chinese Counterfeiters Have Even Knocked Off A Giant Rubber Duck

China is known for it's hilariously bad knock-off, be they accessories, technology, or even architecture.

And now we can add another imitation to the list: Dutch conceptual artist Florentijn Hofman's "Rubber Duck."

At least ten scaled replicas of the artist's creation have appeared all over China after the artist displayed his inflatable installation in Hong Kong last month, according to Reuters.

They have popped up in Zhejiang province, Henan province, Liaoning province, and Shanghai, among other places.

Michael Jordan put his Chicago mansion on the market in February 2012 for $29 million and hasn't been able to get it off his hands.

Jordan must really want to sell the place, because according to Realtor.com, he just dropped that asking price to $21 million.

As you would expect anything Michael Jordan, the place is awesome. There is a gorgeous basketball court, a full weight room, a tennis court and a huge outdoor patio. There are three climate controlled garages with space for 15 cars, a pool and a three-bedroom guest house.

31 Reasons Why Everyone Who Lives In New York Should Actually Live In Jersey City Instead

0
0

Jersey City New Jersey

Every time someone I know gets a job in New York, they always move to Brooklyn.

I have no idea why. Brooklyn is overpriced, inauthentic and hard to get to. I blame the show "Girls"for the misconception that it's a great place to live.

And unless you're a member of the lower aristocracy, there's no way you're comfortably living in Manhattan fresh out of school.

When the local paper of record is writingmultipletrendpiecesabout people enthusiastically living in glorified closets, you know something is seriously screwed up about your real estate market.

However, there is an answer. Across the river from Manhattan, a brief PATH ride away, is a modern paradise of inexpensive rents, authentic humans, and thriving culture.

If you're working in New York on a budget, you're a complete fool to live there and not in Jersey City. Here's why.

1. Jersey City is enjoying a major renaissance as more people disgusted with New York City prices move across the Hudson, similar to what happened with Brooklyn not too long ago.

2. Besides lots of available rental real estate, luxury condos are shooting up all over town.

3. It's easy to see why. The PATH train makes Jersey City more accessible to Midtown (6th Ave from 9th Street to 33rd) and Downtown Manhattan (WTC) than most parts of Brooklyn.

A Massive Whale Hunt On The Faroe Islands Turns The Sea Red Every Summer

Whaling Faroe Islands

It's about the time of year when hunters on Faroe Island, an archipelago in the North Atlantic, are gearing up for the annual whale drive, when several hundred pilots whales are slaughtered for their meat and blubber as part of a 1,000-year-old tradition.

Haunting images of local residents slashing whales, turning the water red with blood, have fueled protests from environmental activists who say the hunt is cruel.

Islanders fight to preserve their tradition of killing pilot whales, which sustains a key part of their diet.

The Faroe Islands are located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about halfway between Scotland and Iceland. It consists of 18 islands — 17 that are inhabited by around 48,000 people.

The islands are largely self-sufficient. The Faroese economy is supported by local agriculture and hunting. Pilot whales, in particular, are a valued part of the national diet and have long been killed for their meat and blubber.

With a combination of success, power, generosity, good looks, fashion sense, and personality, these people are the full package.

#32 David Tepper

Age: 55

Firm: President and Founder, Appaloosa Management

Education: BA, University of Pittsburgh; MBA, Carnegie Mellon University

Tepper, who runs a $12 billion distressed-debt hedge fund, has one of the best long-term track records. In 2012, he was up 30%, while a lot other funds struggled to find alpha. He was also the best paid hedge fund manager last year.

He has made headlines this year by coming out as massively bullish on U.S. equities

Aside from his investing acumen, Tepper has an incredible sense of humor. The former high school musical star even broke out in song on live TV.

#31 Brady Dougan

Age: 53

Firm: CEO, Credit Suisse Group

Education: BA, MBA, University of Chicago

Dougan has been making comments this year that banker pay is outpacing shareholder returns. He told Bloomberg TV, "That’s not sustainable. That’s not right."

Dougan got a 34% raise in 2012, taking home $8.2 million. In 2011 he took a 69% pay cut, taking home $3.3 million. The bank's board pointed out in its annual report that year that he was "taking real and direct accountability" for the bank's lackluster earnings and share performance.

Outside of the office, he's a marathoner with a passion for long distance running. We hear that he's also frequently spotted lifting weights in the morning at the bank.

#30 Mary Callahan Erdoes

Age: 46

Firm: CEO, JPMorgan Asset Management

Education: BA, Georgetown University; MBA, Harvard University

Erdoes, whose $2 trillion unit acts independently, bet against the "London Whale" trade that lost JPMorgan's CIO office billions, according to DealBook.

She also got a compensation package larger than JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon

The Real Life Buildings That Helped Inspire The Monsters University Campus

Monsters University Campus

Monsters University has dominated the box office since its release two weeks ago and part of its success may be due to the extraordinary effort the Pixar animation team put in to make the movie as realistic as possible, even down the titular college campus setting.

In preparation for the film, the California-based Pixar team took trips to local schools UC Berkeley and Stanford, and went across the country to check out Harvard, Princeton, and MIT.

These campus visits helped the animators create a collegiate environment that while not based on any one school, had a mix of California and East Coast university traditions, Robert Kondo, Monster University's Art Director for Set Design & Shading, told us.

Kondo told Business Insider that because a lot of the animators went to art school, they traveled to these campuses to get an understanding of a more all around university experience. More than looking at specific buildings, though, Kondo said — as only an art school grad could — that the team went to "absorb the feeling" of their element.

The movie has sparked some online debate over the buildings at Monsters University, as various students across the country try and claim specific landmarks as their own. This fits in pretty nicely with Pixar's goal of creating a unique yet relatable campus laden with "ritual" and "tradition."

Based on this online discussion and the campuses Pixar chose, we went through and picked out some buildings that might have been inspiration points for the Monsters University creators.

One of the most visible structures on any campus is the clock tower, such as this one found at Monsters University.

Although a different color, Berkeley's Sather Tower seems to be a close cousin.

The scenic campus of Monsters University also features the Troll Bridge, which is much more pleasant than its name would suggest.
