The 13 Most Powerful Photos From Trayvon Martin Protests Around The Country

A day after a Florida jury's not-guilty ruling for George Zimmerman in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, protestors took to the street nationwide, from Los Angeles to New York City.

Many held signs, chanted, "No justice, no peace," and called for federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman, who was cleared of all charges after fatally shooting Martin, an unarmed black teenager in Sanford, Florida.

The jury, which deliberated for 16 hours over two days, said that Zimmerman's use of deadly force was justified in self-defense. But thousands of Americans expressed that they didn't agree with the verdict, demonstrating afterward the intense emotions the case has continued to produce throughout the country.

The protests were mostly peaceful, but about a dozen people were arrested in New York for blocking traffic, according to NBC New York.

In Los Angeles, a demonstrator blocked a commuter train during protests over the Zimmerman verdict.

In Miami, protestors of all ages gathered downtown at the Torch of Friendship, a monument dedicated to John F. Kennedy.

Protests in New York began on Sunday with a planned afternoon rally in Union Square. Many held signs with the words "We Are All Trayvon Martin."

People In Japan Are Trying To Change Their Fate With Palm Plastic Surgery

open hand against black background

A new plastic surgery trend in Japan alters the palm lines of your hand — and potentially your fate.

According to a report by Jake Adelstein and Nathalie-Kyoko Stucky in The Daily Beast, palmistry enthusiasts are asking surgeons to extend or create lines in their hand with an electric scalpel to increase their luck.

One such Japanese surgeon is Takaaki Matsuoka, who was first asked to perform the procedure by a patient in 2011. Having never heard of such a thing, he was able to find examples of the surgery in Korea, where patients' flesh was cut and burned to leave a semi-permanent scar on the hand.

Matsuoka's clinic has since performed 37 of these procedures, according to The Daily Beast. The entire process takes 10 to 15 minutes with as many as 10 lines on the palm altered at a time, plus a subsequent month to recover. The total cost is $1,000.

The majority of Matsuoka's patients are men and women in their 30s who strongly believe in fortune telling. He told Adelstein and Stucky that men tend to favor lines that predict money or success, whereas women request their love and marriage lines to be altered.

And although Matsuoka confessed to The Daily Beast that he didn't believe the surgery actually affected his patients' luck, he did say the feedback has been positive with a few former patients even reporting marriage proposals or winning the lottery.

"If people think they’ll be lucky, sometimes they become lucky," he said. "And it’s not like the palm lines are really written in stone — they’re basically wrinkles."

QUIZ: Gerrymandered US Congressional District Or Rorschach Inkblot?

0
0

Rorschach Test Congressional Disctrict

Ever wonder why Congress can maintain a 10% approval rating while still having an incumbent re-election rate over 90%?

Well, the answer's pretty simple and it's called Gerrymandering. It's the process by which state legislatures map districts to guarantee victories for a number of their candidates, regardless of how voters feel.

A legislature held by Party A can deprive Party B of Congressional seats by two redistricting strategies: packing and cracking.

Packing means that they map a district containing a huge majority of Party B supporters, minimizing their effect in the rest of the state. Cracking means that they make sure members of party B are in the minority of most districts by spreading them out between districts.

The result is some really funky-looking districts.

Looking at the round of redistricting prior to the current one, we took some of the weirdest-shaped districts from the 112th Congress, reflected them so that they're symmetrical, and put them up against the famous Rorschach inkblot test.

Can you tell the difference between a gerrymandered congressional district and a Rorschach inkblot?

I think it looks like a moth.

It's California's former 20th Congressional district, previously represented by Rep. Jim Costa and now largely represented by Rep. David Valadao a solidly Democratic district linking the cities of Fresno, Sanger, Selma, and Lamont in the far south.

This looks like two people looking at each other.

A Mexican Airline And A Russian Plane Maker Have Made Low-Cost Flying Comfortable

Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) Interjet Paris Air Show

Low-cost air travel is hardly synonymous with comfort, but a young Mexican airline is teaming up with a Russian manufacturer to bring the two together.

At the Paris Air Show in June, low cost carrier Interjet took delivery of the first of 20 new SuperJet SSJ110s, built by Russia's Sukhoi.

The 100-seat planes are a logical fit for Interjet, which operates relatively short, regional flights. It's the first Western airline to operate them.

We stepped on board the new jet in Paris, and were rather impressed: It feels clean and comfortable — not the first things that come to mind when flying from Miami to Mexico City for under $300.

The interior is the work of Italian design firm Pininfarina, and puts a great face on a jet with a troubled history. Last year, 45 people died when one of the jets crashed in Indonesia. Investigators blamed the crash on pilot error, according to Reuters.

The outside of the jet is painted in different shades of blue.

The colors are the same inside.

It's not quite fancy enough to give each seat a personal screen, so passengers will have to make do with those built into the ceiling.

The 12 Best And Worst Things About The All-Star Game

0
0

mLB All-Star game

Major League Baseball's All-Star game is one of the biggest moments of the sport's regular season and is still the crown jewel of All-Star games.

And yet, MLB still can't quite get the Midsummer Classic right, angering many fans.

Whether it is how the game is played or how the teams are constructed, fans either love the game or they hate it and often they do both.

On the next few pages we will take a look at why MLB's showcase of its best players is still the best, and the worst, All-Star game.

BEST: Resembles an actual game

In the NFL, nobody wants to get hurt. In the NHL and NBA, nobody wants to play defense. However, outside of the occasional Larry Walker batting right-handed  because he was afraid to face Randy Johnson or both teams running out of pitchers, the action is often very typical of a regular baseball game with players giving near-maximum effort on both offense and on defense.

WORST: Game decides homefield advantage in World Series

Bud Selig wanted to add interest to the All-Star game so homefield advantage in the World Series now goes to the league that wins the All-Star game. As far as the World Series goes, this is no better or worse than the old method of just alternating leagues. But now the managers of the All-Star game are more concerned about winning and that means some deserving players get left out because another player might be more important to the manager's strategy.

BEST: Players wear their own uniforms

Fans want to see their favorite players in the All-Star game and they want to see their favorite team's uniforms. And as we have seen in the other sports (as well as MLB's home run derby), they don't hire All-Star designers for the special uniforms.

The Otherworldly Architecture Of Zaha Hadid

Zaha HadidArchitect Zaha Hadid is known for her modern, curving designs, like the aquatics center she conceived for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Hadid, who became the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize (the Nobel Prize of her field) in 2004, has designed everything from a metro station in Saudi Arabia to a city center in downtown Belgrade.

But until now, she's never been commissioned to design a building in New York City. Today, developer Related revealed renderings for an 11-story condominium Hadid designed near Manhattan's posh High Line park. The boutique condo will be made of steel and glass, and incorporate a chevron pattern.

The apartment exemplifies Hadid's aesthetic, from the flowing curves to the freeform shape. Click through to see how her style has evolved over time.

Meredith Galante contributed to this story.

Completed in 2003, the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati was Hadid's first project in the United States. It was a huge critical success.

After the success of the Rosenthal Center, Hadid was hired for several other projects. The BMW Central Building in Leipzing, Germany was among the first. It was completed in May 2005.

Gangnam Style Turns One Year Old Today — Learn The Dance That Changed Everything

0

psy gangnam style danceExactly one year ago today, the music video for Psy's mega-hit "Gangnam Style" was uploaded onto YouTube.

In that one year, "Gangnam Style" has been viewed over 1.7 billion times– making it the most watched video on YouTube ever. For some perspective on the magnitude of "Gangnam Style," the second most watched YouTube video is Justin Bieber's "Baby" with 872 million views.

Bottom line, "Gangnam Style" is a catchy song and you don't need much hand-eye coordination to do the dance.

"The mindset of this dance is to dress classy and dance cheesy," Psy told Ellen DeGeneres.

While some people watch the music video and become overwhelmed at Psy's impressive dance skills, it's really a simple routine to learn.

"Imagine you're on a horse," Psy tells NY1 reporter Michelle Park

Homer's Pond on Martha's Vineyard View

314 acres of nearly untouched land on Martha's Vineyard just hit the market for $118 million, a record price for the area.

Dubbed Homer's Pond, the expansive piece of land includes a 5,600-square-foot home that's supremely private. It's one of the largest coastal properties for sale in the United States, and Charles Carlson of South Light Properties, one of the property's listing agents, called it a "private kingdom."

A lucky buyer can purchase the entire property for the full $118 million, but it's also possible to buy a smaller piece. A buyer might choose a 100-acre parcel of land for $31 million, a 164-acre parcel for $43 million, or the two together for $74 million.

Welcome to Homer's Pond. This secluded and ultra-serene property includes 1,200 feet of private oceanfront beach and a 35-acre freshwater pond, perfect for swimming, boating, or horseback-riding.

A huge percentage of the property is undeveloped and is graced by tranquil woods and grasslands.

The main home has floor-to-ceiling windows, four bedrooms and 180-degree views of both the pond and the Atlantic Ocean.

Here's What Psy Has Accomplished Since 'Gangnam Style' Debuted 1 Year Ago

169309555

It's been a full year since the explosive, inscrutable South Korean hit “Gangnam Style” from pop artist Psy first appeared on YouTube.

It seems like just yesterday that Psy’s signature horse gallop and light blue tuxedo jacket took over the Internet, but the song first hit YouTube on July 15, 2012, making today the one-year anniversary of the most-viewed video of all time.

“Gangnam Style” is a monster hit: the video has more than 1.7 billion views, becoming the first YouTube video to surpass one billion at the end of 2012.

The song earned Psy $8 million in YouTube revenue alone.

So what’s Psy been up to this past year? Not a ton. He weathered some controversy and attempted to come out with another viral sensation, but he’ll probably never again excite the world like he did with “Gangnam Style.”

September 2012: "Saturday Night Live" featured a sketch with downtrodden employees at a “Lids” store listening to "Gangnam Style" to lift their spirits. The real Psy joined a parody Psy for the finale.

Check out the sketch here.

October 2012: A month before the presidential election, College Humor skewered the lifestyle of wealthy Republican nominee Mitt Romney with a parody video titled “Mitt Romney Style.” The video generated almost 50 million views.

Watch it here.

Nov. 2012: Psy rode Madonna like a pony during a mash-up of "Gangnam Style" and "Give It 2 Me," saying the performance topped his list of accomplishments.

DEUTSCHE BANK: These Are The 17 Best Stocks For Small Cap Boom

The U.S. stock markets have been having a banner year.

And as big time companies hum along, small cap stocks — which tend to do better than the S&P 500 during good times and worse during bad times — have been singing even louder.

Small cap stocks have little exposure to foreign markets where growth has been slowing. Furthermore, they are less exposed to the negative effects of a strengthening dollar.

In a new report to clients, Deutsche Bank's David Bianco offers his firm's calls for the best mid and small cap stocks right now.

These buy-rated non-S&P 500 stocks have market caps greater than $800 million, price-earnings ratios less than 25, 2013 EPS growth rates greater than 8%, and net debt/market cap less than 30%.

Relative to Deutsche Bank's analysts' targets, these stocks offer return opportunities of 5% to 23%.

5 Credit Cards Most Of America Could Never Own

0

Richie Rich 26 8 10 kc1

We find symbols of wealth in everything we possess, such as the watches we wear, the cars we drive and the homes we live in. So, it’s no surprise that the credit cards in our wallets also allude to our ability to spend.

At the bottom, you’ll find secured credit cards, which cater to people with bad credit profiles for one reason or another. At the top, you’ll discover elusive credit cards that are only available to a small group of consumers, those who don’t hesitate to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars at a moment’s notice.

The credit card industry has discovered a market where the super-affluent takes pride in owning one of these elite credit cards. Unlike your typical credit card, these prestigious credit cards are not heavily advertised. Usually for the price of a high annual fee, cardmembers get extraordinary perks, ridiculously high credit limits and a special treatment wherever they shop.

5. Merrill Accolades American Express

The Merrill Accolades American Express Card, formerly the Bank of America Accolades American Express card, is available only to select clients of the Merrill Lynch Wealth Management division, a part of Bank of America.

The Merrill Accolades card boasts a black design, with the customary Merrill Lynch bull logo. However, the card comes with a relatively low annual fee of just $295, cheaper than many high-tier airline credit credit cards.

Benefits of the Merrill Accolades card include premium concierge service, hotel discounts and upgrades, complimentary credits and amenities on select resort and cruise programs, discounts through Virgin Atlantic Airways, discounts and complimentary credits toward Sentient Jet private jet membership, an extensive rewards program, and more.

4. Citigroup Chairman American Express

The Citigroup Chairman American Express Card is another distinguished credit card known to be available only to a small group of clients of Citi’s private bank and investment units.

The card touts a black design to match its prestige, but it isn’t made of any special materials like some other elite credit cards out there. It has an annual fee of $500 with no preset spending limit.

The Citigroup Chairman American Express Card offers a 24/7 personal concierge, a travel rewards program, complimentary lounge access, statement credits for flight- and in-flight-related expenses, access and opportunities to purchase private jet services, room upgrades at Hilton HHonors hotels and more.

3. Stratus Rewards Visa

The Stratus Rewards Visa card is a highly exclusive credit card that is often dubbed the “White Card,” in contrast to American Express “Black Card.” The card is available only by invitation through a current cardmember or Stratus Rewards partner company. The target audience for this card are high-net-worth consumers who must have private jet travel.

The Stratus Rewards Visa card has an annual fee of $1,500. The card’s loyalty program revolves around private jet travel as a redeemable reward. Cardmembers can pool their earned points with friends and other members to redeem for flight hours on private jets, available through MarquisJet.

Other perks include personal concierge services, quarterly award-show-style gifts and trend-setting items, discounted charter flights, complimentary car service, upgrades and special amenities at luxury hotels, upscale merchandise discounts and more. With a Stratus Rewards Visa card, cardmembers can also redeem their points for consultation with lifestyle experts and personalities.

11 Outrageous Things People Did To Save Money

0
0

TLC

Couponing became something of a national sensation when TLC started featuring "extreme" savers on dual reality shows, "Extreme Couponing" and "Extreme Cheapskates."

Newspaper theft skyrocketed— any couponer knows that's where the best deals are — and the shows have developed their own cult followings.

But there are some things people just shouldn't have to do to save money.

We rounded up the most outrageous moments from the shows and  countered them with some money-saving tips of our own.

1. Washing clothes in the dishwasher.

In another episode, featured cheapskate Ben washes his clothes, hats, comb, dishes and even his toothbrush in the dishwasher.

"It's kind of an all-in one cleaner," he says, claiming that the dishwasher gets hot enough to wash anything he throws in there.

Estimated savings: $5-10 per month

Our tip: According to energy.gov, a dishwasher uses 3.5 times more wattage to run than a clothes washer, costing you much more to run. Also, washers have a special way of agitating clothes in order to clean them. A dishwasher does not. ... plus, there's no spin cycle to be sure you're getting all the excess water and dirt out. A dishwasher is only recommended for use on clothing items like shoes and baseball hats, things that would lose their shape in the washing machine.

2. Turning a bottle into a toilet.

A TLC-featured "Extreme Cheapskate," Victoria has a pretty gross way of saving water: Using a bottle for bathroom breaks instead of wasting money on toilet flushes.

On top of that, she dumps her urine in her compost bin afterward.

"I thought wow, I can pee in a jar, grow my compost and not have to flush my toilet," she said.

Estimated savings: $10 a month

Our tip: We fully support the compost and water saving initiative here, but you don't have to take it to this extreme. Try the "if it's yellow, let it mellow" approach and you can easily cut back on water use. In fact, you can save 2,190 gallons of water per person per year by only flushing once a day.

3. Using a makeshift bidet instead of flushing the toilet.

What is with extreme savers and their bathrooms? In this episode, featured cheapskate Kay uses a water bottle and soap to clean herself after using the bathroom so she doesn't have to buy toilet paper.

"I don't believe in spending money on something that you are going to throw away, such as toilet paper or paper towels," she says.

Estimated saving:$150 per year

Our tip: OK, she has a point about wasting money, but toilet paper is so cheap already that there are definitely better and bigger ways to save than by compromising sanitation. Toilet paper and other paper products are among the best items to buy in bulk to save — up to 40 to 50% off retail prices.

8 Books You Didn't Know Were Written By Famous Authors

0

The Cuckoos Calling, JK RowlingIf you've ever been guilty of reading a book just for the author, you're not alone.

Sales on a new crime novel called "The Cuckoo's Calling" shot up more than 500,000% when it was revealed that the author, Robert Galbraith, was really J.K. Rowling writing under a pen name. Rowling, author of the best-selling "Harry Potter" series, explained that she wanted the chance to "publish without hype or expectation."

As it turns out, Rowling isn't alone in the secret world of famous authors penning stories under pseudonyms. See if you recognize any of these eight books written under pen names by some of the most well-known authors around.

"The Regulators," by Richard Bachman

Author's real name: Stephen King

Though King is one of the most popular and well-known authors of all time, he started his writing career with short novels, like "The Regulators," as Richard Bachman.

When asked why he decided to take a pen name for some of his work, King explained that in the early days of his career, there was a belief by publishers that the public would only accept one book a year from an author; King wrote as Bachman so that he could write two books a year, one under each name.

"Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell," by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell

Authors' real names: Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë

"Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell" was a collection of poetry written in male pen names chosen by the Brontë sisters. Each sister used the first initials of their first names and adopted men's names instead so they could preserve their identities and avoid the sexist views of those who didn't take kindly to female writers.

The Brontë sisters are known for their poetry and novels written in their own names, including "Jane Eyre" (Charlotte), "Wuthering Heights" (Emily), and "Agnes Grey" (Anne).

"The Adventures of Lucky Starr," by Paul French

Author's real name: Isaac Asimov

The author of "I, Robot"; "Foundation"; "Nightfall;" and over 300 other works wrote a popular young adult sci-fi series called "The Adventures of Lucky Starr" under the alias Paul French. The books share the story of an orphan, David Starr, who becomes a space ranger who solves intergalactic mysteries.

According to a reviewer of the "Lucky Starr" books, Asimov eventually grew tired of his pen name, and left clues in later books that would lead readers to discover Asimov as the real author.
