Samsung's latest laptops have a refreshed, modern look that makes them way more appealing

samsung notebook 9 pro

  • Samsung announced new laptops at CES 2019 that finally look as good as those from rivals like Apple or Dell.
  • If you've never thought about Samsung laptops as an option before, the new Notebook 9 Pro might change your opinion.
  • The new Notebook Flash is inexpensive at $350, but it looks better than anything else you can get for under $500.

If Samsung's latest laptops were just a simple power upgrade over previous models, I wouldn't even bother to give them a second glance.

But the new Samsung PC models, announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, come with fresh new designs that finally earns them a place next to the modern and beautiful machines from makers like Apple, Dell, Lenovo, or HP.

Indeed, there are plenty of laptops that can rock a powerful Intel Core i7 processor — Samsung seems to have finally realized that aesthetics matter as much as specs when it comes to standing apart from the competition.

Check out Samsung's latest laptops announced at CES 2019, the Notebook 9 Pro and the Notebook Flash:

SEE ALSO: Samsung's new screen that clamps to your desk is incredibly simple — and it's the best thing to happen to computer monitors in years

Samsung's Notebook Pro 9 is a tidy little powerhouse designed for power users looking for portability and great design.

The new Notebook 9 Pro I saw at CES 2019 has a 13-inch FHD display, a powerful Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Those are pretty standard specs for the high-end that pretty much any laptop from any company could sport — and many do.

It also comes standard with Samsung's Active Pen stylus, which is handy for taking notes or annotating and signing documents. It's good that Samsung includes the Active Pen with the Notebook 9 Pro — Microsoft sells its Surface Pen stylus separately. A laptop stylus is the kind of thing that's handy, but not usually useful enough to buy separately.

The Notebook 9 Pro weighs in at a lightweight 2.84 pounds, which is a hair heavier than the 2018 MacBook Air. It's also 0.55 inches thick, which is actually thinner than the 2018 MacBook Air, which measures in at 0.61 inches at the thickest point.

Any laptop can have great specs, so Samsung improved the one area where it has the most control — design

Any laptop can have great specs. It's become clear over the last few years that design is becoming more and more important — it's one of the few areas where laptop makers have the most control when differentiating their devices from others. This year, Samsung seized control of the design of its own laptops.

With narrow bezels, sleek black borders, sharper and more modern edges, and a solid aluminum exterior, Samsung's latest Notebook 9 Pro has caught up with modern laptop design, where its previous models always felt laggard in terms of looks.

It also has three "diamond-cut" strips around the edges that gives it a little extra flair over its competitors. There's a slight retro vibe around the strips that I'm actually quite fond of.

There's no price tag as of yet, but the Notebook 9 Pro will be available in 'early 2019.'

What 2019 has in store for your finances, based on your zodiac sign

Money wallet

  • Uranus moves back into financially savvy Taurus on March 7, which could mean that many of us will think differently about how we earn and manage cash.
  • Be on the lookout for more opportunities that can give your bank account a boost.
  • Find out what 2019 has in store for your finances below.

Editor's Note: Astrology is just for fun and is not supported by scientific evidence.

The new year is just starting off, and many of us are probably thinking about the money moves we want to make in 2019.

The financial forecast for 2019 may bring us some surprising twists and turns as Uranus (the planet of radical change) moves back into financially savvy Taurus on March 7, where it will stay until April 26, 2026. With Taurus being a sign that loves stability (and money), having a planet like Uranus in it for the next seven years will push us to think very differently in terms of how we earn and manage our cash. For some of us, this may mean earning our money by non-traditional means or placing less of a value on certain forms of material wealth, like flashy, expensive things.
However, with Jupiter, the planet of abundance and good fortune, at home in Sagittarius until December 2, 2019; many of us should not only find more opportunities to make money but opportunities to see that money increase.
Of course, responsible Saturn in Capricorn (along with a few game-changing eclipses on the Cancer-Capricorn axis) will be on hand to make sure that we’re focused on our financial security and saving for a rainy day.

Take a look at your financial horoscope for 2019 to find out what your sign can expect.

Aries

With the big moves that you’ll be making in your career, there’s a good chance that you’ll be able to make the big money too.

However, with unstable Uranus in Taurus sitting in your money zone, you’ll have to be sure that you’re not spending your money as fast as you make it, as you could be faced with some unexpected expenses or financial dry spells. Uranus will be pushing you to redefine what you value in terms of your resources, your self-worth, and getting what you want.

The good news is that the changes you make will set you up for life.

Taurus

Things are looking up for you financially in 2019 thanks to expansive Jupiter in Sagittarius, especially if you’re married or in a long-term partnership, as your partner will experience some major growth in their income which could contribute to your financial security.

Though if you’re single, you could still experience a windfall too; either by way of tax or insurance pay out, an inheritance, a return on a financial investment, a loan, or a hefty commission. If you do receive a loan or an increase in your credit line, watch that you don’t borrow and spend more than you can afford to pay back.

Gemini

With the eclipses and responsible Saturn activating your financial sector, there’s a chance that you could score an opportunity to make more money, but you’ll have to stay on top of your cash. If debt has been an issue, you’ll find yourself working to pay it off while looking to ways that you can invest or make your money work better for you.

If you share financial obligations with someone else and you’ve been paying more than your fair share, you may need to have some tough conversations about cash and responsibility. It’s time to heal your wounds around scarcity.

6 reasons why you're still hungry on the keto diet

$

keto plate

  • The keto diet is arguably the trendiest diet of the year.
  • It can help with weight loss, weight maintenance, increase energy, and promote healthier skin.
  • Some complain of hunger when trying to follow this diet.
  • Not consuming enough fiber or water could be contributors to hunger.
  • Relying on plant-based dairy and getting inadequate sleep at night may lead to hunger, too.

By far one of the biggest diets lately has been the keto diet. From celebrities like Halle Berry and Kourtney Kardashian to the everyday people who are pro-keto, many have given this popular diet a try. After all, many claim that the keto diet can help you shed weight, can give your skin a glow, and can give you more energy throughout the day.

But there are still some questions surrounding this dietary trend. Some people have struggled to maintain the keto diet largely because they've found they're just not getting full enough, making the diet difficult to keep up with. However, you shouldn't be hungry if you follow keto — here's what you're doing wrong.

You aren't eating foods rich enough in fiber.

Fiber can help you feel much more full, so a fiber-rich diet is important if you want to be satiated. The benefit here is that it's easy to make your keto meals more rich in fiber. For example, a food like sauerkraut is low in carbs, but rich in fiber, so you can maintain your keto diet while adding in more fiber to help you feel fuller.

You aren't getting enough sleep.

When you're sleep deprived, your body doesn't produce enough of the hormone leptin, which leads to an increase in ghrelin, which can trigger a feeling of hunger, according to Precision Nutrition. If you're wondering if your lack of sleep is leading you to feel hungry, rather than the introduction of the keto diet, try getting more sleep. If you're well-rested and still hungry, there may be another piece of the puzzle to figure out.

You're relying on plant-based dairy.

While milk has become controversial in regards to weight loss in recent years, according to registered dietitian Abbey Sharp, RD, who previously spoke with INSIDER, you need dairy with full fat (not 2%, almond milk, oat milk, or any other sort of milk) to get essential nutrients that will help you feel fuller

Advertisers are fleeing in droves after Tucker Carlson's comments about immigrants on Fox News — here's the list

tucker carlson

  • Companies that advertised during Tucker Carlson's show on Fox News have begun fleeing in droves following his anti-immigrant comments.
  • People were outraged and threatened to boycott companies advertising on Carlson's show.
  • Here are the businesses that have pulled their advertisements so far.

Companies that advertised during Tucker Carlson's show on Fox News have begun fleeing in droves following his anti-immigrant comments made in December.

During his show, the "Tucker Carlson Tonight" host expressed concern with the state of US immigration policy and immigrants' educational backgrounds. He urged more "scientists and skilled engineers" to come to the US and said that allowing immigrants from impoverished countries to come to the US would make it "poorer and dirtier."

"Instead, we're getting waves of people with high-school educations or less," he said on his show. "Nice people — no one doubts that. But as an economic matter, this is insane. It's indefensible, so nobody even tries to defend it.

"Instead, our leaders demand that you shut up and accept this. We have a moral obligation to admit the world's poor, they tell us, even if it makes our own country poorer and dirtier and more divided."

Carlson's comments were widely rebuked, and several people threatened to boycott his advertisers, which began cutting ties.

fox news

Carlson reiterated his claims and likened the effect of the US's immigration policy to a city in Mexico.

"The left says we have a moral obligation to admit the world's poor," Carlson said, "even if it makes our own country more like Tijuana is now, which is to say poorer and dirtier and more divided."

Fox News expressed supported for its host's opinions, saying it was "a shame that left-wing advocacy groups, under the guise of being supposed 'media watchdogs' weaponize social media against companies in an effort to stifle free speech."

The company also described the advertisers' moves as "unfortunate and unnecessary distractions," and accused progressive media watchdogs with "deeply political motives" of threatening Carlson on Twitter.

"While we do not advocate boycotts, these same groups never target other broadcasters and operate under a grossly hypocritical double standard given their intolerance to all opposing points of view," Fox News said.

Here's the full list of companies that have pulled their ads from Carlson's show:

A new robot promises to make the dream of oven-fresh bread every 6 minutes a reality

BreadBot (bread)

  • A new device named the "BreadBot" is said to have a staggering bread production capability: six loaves per hour, and nearly 250 per day, with barely any human intervention, according to the company behind it.
  • Unless you're feeding hundreds of people, the BreadBot probably isn't for you — it's aimed at disrupting the supermarket bread model.
  • The company behind the BreadBot, Wilkinson Baking Company, debuted the device on Sunday at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Fresh bread, as we all know, is delicious.

But what's even better than fresh bread? Loaves of bread produced magically by a robot, over and over, every six minutes. The only input required: Maintaining a steady supply of flour, yeast, and water.

This is the promise of the "BreadBot"— a newly unveiled creation from Wilkinson Baking Company, which debuted this past weekend ahead of the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

As you might suspect, the BreadBot isn't for the casual home baker. Here's how it works:

SEE ALSO: Samsung's absurd 219-inch TV takes up an entire wall — thus its name, 'The Wall'

First, some numbers — here's what BreadBot can do:

The BreadBot is an all-in-one, automated solution for bread production. It's intended to automate the process of baking fresh bread, and to keep it going all day.

To that end, the BreadBot can purportedly produce 10 loaves of fresh bread every hour, with about 90 minutes of start time required before the first fresh loaf comes out.

With a 30 minute rest (for cleaning) and the occasional ingredient re-supply, Wilkinson Baking Company estimates BreadBot's production capacity at approximately 235 loaves of fresh bread every day.

That's a serious amount of bread!

Loaves are deposited into what is essentially a large vending machine, albeit one full of fresh loaves of bread.

After bread is mixed, kneaded, proofed, and baked, it's sent to the final holding area where customers can walk up and select fresh bread by hand.

It wouldn't be a modern piece of tech without a touchscreen, and BreadBot is no slouch in this regard. A touchscreen display offers detailed information about each loaf, including how fresh it is and what type of bread it is.

In one example given, customers can grab loaves of bread directly from the machine:

16 of the most dastardly 'Bachelor' villains, ranked

bachelor villains

After 21 seasons of "The Bachelor," 14 of "The Bachelorette," and the franchise's various spin-offs, it's safe to say that the show has produced a lot of romances — and a lot of villains. While some contestants show up on night one hoping to make a connection with ABC's leading man or lady, there's always at least one whose primary goal is to shake things up… and not in a good way.

Some of these villains are victims of editing, but others definitely enjoy creating drama and stirring the pot, even if it means they get sent home early.

Here are some of the biggest villains from the "Bachelor" franchise, ranked. It's safe to say they didn't join the show for the right reasons.

16. Krystal Nielsen didn't go on "The Bachelor" to make friends

On Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s season of "The Bachelor," Nielsen was all about snagging as much of his attention as possible, but unfortunately, it ended up blowing up in her face. After a bowling date gone wrong, Nielsen couldn't say enough negative things about Luyendyk and his contestants. Fortunately, she was able to redeem herself on "Bachelor in Paradise," where she got engaged to Chris Randone.

15. Corinne Olympios tried to steal Nick Viall's heart

On Nick Viall's season, Olympios was the contestant who fans loved to hate. Despite the fact that she was an adult, she couldn't stop talking about how she had a nanny, and she ruthlessly interrupted other women when they tried to get their time with Nick.

14. Olivia Caridi practically became a meme

Olivia Caridi entered Ben Higgins' season of "The Bachelor" swinging — from night one, she was willing to do whatever it took to catch Higgins' eye. After a few eye-roll-inducing comments, like when she tried to say she understood hardship because she'd been bullied for having cankles, it was clear that Caridi was meant to be the villain of the season.

  • Clemson and Alabama faced off in the College Football Playoff for the third time in four years.
  • After a scorching start to the game, Clemson's defense took over and Alabama made some questionable decisions.
  • In the end, Clemson scored the final 30 points for the 44-16 win and their second championship in three years.

The Clemson Tigers are national champions for the second time in three years as they blew out Alabama, 44-16 in the College Football Playoff championship game.

The game got off to a wild start, with the two teams exchanging scores and totaling four touchdowns in the first eight minutes. But over the final two-and-a-half quarters, Clemson's defense turned up the heat and Alabama made some questionable decisions.

Clemson finished the game with a 30-0 run and thoroughly dominated the Crimson Tide.

Below, we tracked all the big plays and the top moments that people will be talking about on Tuesday.

The game is taking place at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara

The location caused havoc with ticket sales leading up to the game thanks, in part, to the distance from the two schools and the cost of visiting the Bay Area.

Once again it is Alabama and Clemson. Over the last four years, there have been 11 semifinal and championship games. Ten of those were won by Alabama or Clemson. This game will make 11 out of last 12.

  • Goldman Sachs' equity strategy team has published its quarterly chart book detailing the final quarter of 2018, and what lies ahead for this year.
  • Among its round-ups was a list of stocks trading at the highest premium to the firm's price targets.
  • Most of the names expected to fall the most can be found in two sectors: consumer staples and real estate.

Goldman Sachs' equity strategy team just put together its quarterly chart book, detailing the brutal final quarter — and month — of 2018, and the firm's outlook for this year.

The team, led by chief US equity strategist David Kostin, included a list of stocks with the most downside to the firm's price targets.

In other words, the strategists compiled stocks trading at the highest premium to the firm's price target, implying the stocks could fall sharply if the analysts are correct in their predictions.

Notably, of the 11 names Business Insider has listed below, most of the stocks are in the real estate or consumer staples sector. While the broader market posted a total return of -4% in 2018, real estate posted a total return of -2% in 2018, and consumer staples posted a total return of -8%.

Here's a breakdown of the stocks, in the order of largest implied drop to the smallest implied drop.

7 ways to control dandruff, according to dermatologists

$

dandruff

  • Dandruff can be caused by many different conditions, such as an overgrowth of yeast, dry skin, psoriasis, or eczema.
  • There are many different ways to treat dandruff including using antifungal shampoos, shampooing more often, exfoliating your scalp, and applying topical treatments.
  • If you try all of these remedies and your dandruff persists, you should consult a dermatologist.

Dealing with dandruff — and all the white flakes that accompany it — can be a pain. It's a common condition that's caused by many different things, Sarika Banker, a dermatologist in New York, told INSIDER. "It can be caused by dry skin or certain skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or eczema," she said. "The most common cause, seborrheic dermatitis, is thought to be related to overgrowth of yeast that can naturally live on our skin, Malassezia."

The bad news? There is no actual "cure" for dandruff. It's usually a chronic condition, said Banker, but there are ways to control it. Below are seven different ways to keep those white flakes at bay.

Use the right shampoo.

If you're dealing with a dry, itchy scalp, switching out your normal shampoo for one with dandruff-fighting ingredients can help immensely, said Holly Hanson, a dermatologist in Minnesota. "Shampoos that contain an antifungal component, including Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo, Selsun Blue (selenium sulfide) or Head and Shoulders (zinc pyrithione) are helpful," she told INSIDER. "If someone doesn't like using this every day, these can be rotated every other day with another shampoo," she added.

Looking for a more natural approach? "I often recommend washing with dilute apple cider vinegar or tea tree oil-based shampoos," Banker added.

Whether you choose a store-bought dandruff shampoo or a natural remedy, Banker said to think of your shampoo as a scalp treatment. "They should be lathered in and left in for a few minutes to reach their full treatment potential and then rinsed out," she said.

Shampoo more often.

Recent beauty advice says that you shouldn't wash your hair every day. But if you have dandruff, it's best to shampoo your tresses each day of the week, said Marisa Garshick, a dermatologist in New York. "For many people, just washing the scalp more frequently can help eliminate dandruff as it can help to remove the extra build up of skin," she told INSIDER.

Avoid keratin treatments.

Bad news for people who love keratin treatments: They can actually trigger your dandruff, said Anne Marie McNeill, a dermatologist in California. "After the treatment, most people will start using sulfate-free and zinc-free shampoos to preserve the straightening effect," she told INSIDER. "Unfortunately, these shampoos do not cleanse the scalp well, and many people end up with moderate to severe dandruff a few weeks after straightening treatments."

10 foods you shouldn't eat in the morning

$

breakfast at tiffanys

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Even though science doesn’t fully back up that claim– and many people do just fine skipping it altogether – it still pays to eat smart first thing in the morning. To know which dishes to avoid, we rounded up the worst foods to eat first thing in the morning.

Toaster pastries are packed with sugar.

Toaster pastries may be delicious, but they have little to no nutritional value and are usually packed with unhealthy fats and high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), according to She Finds. HFCS is high on the glycemic index, according to Healthfully, which means it'll give you a sugar high followed by a crash, according to Men's Journal.

Too much sugar in any form can cause myriad problems, such as weight gain, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and high triglyceride levels – which all increase your risk of heart disease, according to Mayo Clinic.

To make matters even worse, toaster pastries have surprisingly high amounts of sodium; preservatives; and, often, artificial colors, according to She Finds.

Many nut spreads are packed with sugar and fat.

It's common to spread a bit of nut butter on toast to grab and go in the morning. Although this simple butters can be a good source of protein, when they get fancy, these spreads can also be high in sugar and fat.

Nutrition action recommends sticking to a simple peanut or almond butter and skipping or limiting your use of spreads that boast chocolate or hazelnut flavors.

Most breakfast cereals are high in sugar and provide little nutrition.

Most breakfast cereals are high on the glycemic index, especially cornflakes, according to Harvard Health Publishing, which, again, will cause an inevitable crash in energy.

Plus, cereals are made with refined grains, according to Healthline, which have been stripped of almost all fiber, vitamins, and minerals – thus providing little nutritional value, according to Healthline.

We tried smoothies from 5 different chains and the winner tasted creamy and fresh

All Smoothies 1

  • We tried strawberry banana smoothies from multiple fast-food, snack, and smoothie chains.
  • The smoothies we tried were from Panera Bread, Jamba Juice, McDonald's, Auntie Anne's, and Planet Smoothie.
  • Panera Bread came in first place and Planet Smoothie came in second; both of their smoothies had an incredibly smooth texture and an authentic fruit taste.

A fruit smoothie can be the perfect treat after a workout, or a quick and energizing grab-n-go breakfast. But order one that's a little too artificial-tasting and all you could be left with is a half-finished drink and tons of regret.

We tested fruit smoothies from five different fast food chains to see which one is best. To keep things simple, we ordered all strawberry banana smoothies. The versions we sampled were from:

Keep scrolling to read our thoughts and see the final ranking.

Jamba Juice's Strawberries Wild Smoothie was sweet and had a unique ingredient.

First on our smoothie tour was Jamba Juice. The chain is known for its freshly blended smoothies and juices, so we already had high hopes for this drink. But in addition to the apple and banana slices, Jamba Juice's smoothie contained apple juice. It was a surprising take on the classic strawberry banana combo. We ordered a small, which cost $6.68.

With just one sip, we got a strong hit of the banana and apple flavor. The strawberry taste was overpowered by the apple juice, but the overall taste was so fresh and full of natural sweetness. The texture was super smooth and the smoothie was a bit on the thick side but it was still easily drinkable through a straw.

Auntie Anne's Strawberry Banana Smoothie was super sweet.

Auntie Anne's is a chain most known for its assortment of pretzel treats, so it kind of makes sense that their menu would include a refreshing smoothie to wash it all down. Still, this stop isn't known for its smoothies so we kept our expectations low but were open to being pleasantly surprised. The small cost $5.32, but the cup was a little bigger than the one from Jamba Juice.

The first sip was overwhelmingly sweet for our taste but the balance between the strawberry and banana flavors was more even and the texture was super smooth. Even though we felt it was too sweet, if you're looking for a sweet treat that's more like a dessert than a smoothie or if you have a major sweet tooth, you might enjoy this smoothie.

Panera Bread's Strawberry Banana Smoothie was creamy and fresh.

Our next stop was Panera Bread, which is a chain primarily known for serving sandwiches and soups. As with Jamba Juice, we expected this smoothie to have a refreshing, real-fruit taste. We ordered a small, which cost $6.30.

The consistency was noticeably thinner than that of the smoothies from Jamba Juice and Auntie Anne's. The first sip was equally refreshing, but this one was different … it had a much creamier taste and texture, probably because of the Greek yogurt they use in the smoothie. That extra protein is always a plus. And every sip was full of the perfect balance between fresh strawberries and bananas. We were pleasantly surprised at how tasty this smoothie was.

The region now also features one of the world's tallest man-made waterfalls, located on the facade of the Liebian International Building in the city of Guiyang. The 350-foot artificial waterfall is the tallest to come down the side of a building.

Liebian International Plaza also includes a hotel, office space, and a shopping mall.

Guizhou is a fast-growing area with multiple huge projects underway. According to CNN, the province features the highest bridge in the world and the largest single-dish radio telescope on the planet.

Take a look at the Liebian International Plaza's stunning waterfall.

A giant tank on the ground collects rainwater that is used for the waterfall. It takes two hours to prepare for the waterfall to run, and the flow is powered by four water pumps.

Running the waterfall for just one hour adds about $120 to the skyscraper's electricity bill.

"Kingdom Hearts" is a video game franchise born from improbable circumstances: Before the first game was released in 2002, few could have imagined that Disney would be willing to hand their full library of iconic characters over to a Japanese video game developer.

And yet, developer Square Enix found itself with a hit in the form of "Kingdom Hearts," which marries the gameplay of its own "Final Fantasy" series with the legendary Disney pantheon of heroes and villains.

Due out on January 25th, "Kingdom Hearts III" is the first series sequel in more than 13 years, making it one of the most anticipated games of 2019. Square Enix has already teased a bunch of new worlds and returning characters for the game, borrowing from films including "Toy Story," Frozen,""Tangled," and"Big Hero 6."

Indeed, in "Kingdom Hearts," players travel between different world's based on Disney films, usually accompanied by Donald Duck and Goofy. In the course of battling the villainous Heartless, hero Sora helps classic Disney heroes like Mulan, Aladdin, and Simba face familiar villains from their respective stories. Since the first game was released, "Kingdom Hearts" has incorporated characters from more than 30 Disney films.

14 ways you're ruining your clothes without realizing it

  • Caring about the quality of your clothes is normal.
  • It is actually really easy to be doing small things every day that ruin your clothes.
  • These are the things you are doing that are ruining your clothes.

The right ensemble can make you feel unstoppable. But unfortunately, your clothing is actually fairly delicate.

There are all sorts of subtle ways that you could be damaging your clothes without even realizing. Here are a few things you might be doing that are ruining your clothes.

You're not sorting your laundry by dirtiness.

You probably have heard that sorting your laundry into darks and lights is a good idea, but you should also be separating your clothing by soil level.

According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,washing heavily soiled items separately from lightly soiled ones will keep relatively clean clothes from picking up extra grime from the wash water. This transfer of soil can lead whites to take on a grey or yellow tinge and colored items may become dingy.

You're washing your t-shirts and jeans in hot water.

You might know that clothing can shrink in the dryer, but it's also very possible for items to shrink in the washing machine as well. According to Laundry Care, natural fibers like cotton and wool are especially prone to shrinkagewhen exposed to any sort of heat, including warm water, steam, and even direct sunlight. Cotton fabric is actually stretched during manufacturing and exposure to heat causes the garment to return to its natural size.

This means that throwing your cotton t-shirts and jeans (yes, denim is actually made of cotton) in the washing machine on a hot cycle will likely lead to some level of shrinking unless the garment is advertised as being "pre-shrunk" or "pre-washed." To combat this effect, you should always wash your cotton items in cool or cold water and allow them to air dry.

You don't zip clothing up before washing it.

Zippers can actually wreak havoc in your washing machine. Not only can the zipper itself break or damage the drum of your machine, but the sharp metal teeth of the zipper can snag on fabric or lace and ruin your delicate items. To avoid this,be sure to zip up any clothing item with a zipper before tossing it in the washing machine. Better yet, opt for hand-washing these items.

5 easy ways to make your pasta healthier

  • Lean proteins make a bowl of pasta a nutritious meal.
  • Fresh herbs add flavor and nutrients without calories or fat.
  • Using alternative flour pasta is an easy health swap.

Pasta may not be the healthiest food in your pantry, but there are endless ways to make a pasta meal healthier. Often, that comes with adding some healthy additions.

"Enhancing pasta with a few simple swaps is a great way for people to effortlessly make small changes to their diets that will yield significant results," said health research psychologist Bethany D. Lavins-Merillat whose work focuses on judgment, decision making, and how to help people make simple changes to engage in positive health behaviors.

If you struggle to make healthy, or healthier choices or really have no desire to eliminate pasta from your diet, add these ingredients to your next bowl of noodles for a healthier meal.

Add a veggie.

"Veggies not only add additional fiber to your diet but also enhance the flavor of the meal," says Lavins-Merillat. "Think outside the box, and if you can, purchase higher quality ingredients - such as San Marzano tomatoes instead of the traditional canned ones for a red sauce, and organic items on the 'dirty dozen' such as bell peppers, spinach, beans and squash. You will taste the difference and it will leave you feeling more satisfied with your meal."

Greens like spinach or kale are also easy stir-ins, as they wilt with hot pasta. For red sauces, consider blending up cooked vegetables like squash, zucchini or peppers, which enhance the flavor and add extra vitamins. If you're eating longer noodles, try for a half-and-half ratio between spaghetti or linguine and spiralized veggie noodles.

Make the sauce from scratch.

Making your own sauce can only take a few more minutes than reheating a jar of marinara.

"All you need is a bit of olive oil and some fresh Parmesan cheese— upgrade to buying a block and grating it fresh if you are ambitious — for a simple flavor enhancer," said Lavins-Merillat.

You can also cook tomatoes with garlic and herbs for fresh tomato sauce or whip up a healthier Alfredo with cashew cream.

Use fresh herbs.

"Fresh herbs are a great way to kick up the flavor without added calories," said Lavins-Merillat. Try growing basil and other herbs at home so you always have them on hand.

  • Fried desserts are common around the world.
  • In South America, many people eat tiny buñuelos, which symbolize good luck.
  • Beignets, a popular New Orleans specialty, originated in France.

Fried desserts are a common treat around the world. No matter how you make it or what you top it with, it seems like nearly every culture has a take on these sweet treats.

Below, you can get an idea of what fried treats look like around the world, and you'll probably feel inspired to add them all to your food bucket list.

In South America, many people eat tiny buñuelos, which symbolize good luck.

Buñuelos are bite-size dough balls popular in South American countries like Venezuela, Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, as well as Spain, among other places. They are made with slightly different ingredients in each — in Mexico, for example, they're often served with a sweet syrup called piloncillo, while in Colombia they are usually made with cheese and are a traditional Christmas treat. They can be tricky to make, but they are said to be a symbol of good luck.

Bombolone is Italy's version of a doughnut.

Bombolone is round fried dough, usually filled with créme patissiére, chocolate, Nutella or jam. They are often topped with icing or powdered sugar — sort of similar to something like a jelly or Boston creme doughnut. They are made and eaten in various parts of Italy, although the ingredients change with the region.

People in Finland enjoy munkki, sometimes known as May Day doughnuts.

Munkki look just like jelly doughnuts, but they have more dough and a different flavor. They are actually made with cardamom and are known as a Vappu, a carnival at the start of spring, tradition. They are really popular on the eve of May Day.

30 movies we're most excited about in 2019

  • INSIDER combed through the movies coming to theaters in 2019.
  • Among the films we're looking forward to are "Avengers: Endgame,""Men in Black: International,""It: Chapter 2,""Spider-Man Far From Home," and the conclusion to the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise.

Disney may have a big year at theaters with four sequels, but there are a lot of other movies we're looking forward to in 2019.

INSIDER went through more than 100 movies that are coming out this year and rounded up the top 30 you should keep an eye on. Get ready for a lot of sequels and reboots, including a fourth "Men in Black," more Stephen King-inspired thrillers, a "Fast & Furious" spin-off featuring the Rock, and a sci-fi thriller from James Gunn ("Guardians of the Galaxy") and two of his brothers.

Keep reading to see the movies we can't wait to see in 2019.

1. "Glass"

Release date: Friday, January 18, 2019

What it's about: The sequel to M. Night Shyamalan's breakout "Split" is also a direct sequel to "Unbreakable.""Glass" introduces a mysterious psychiatrist, Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson), who tries to convince Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), David Dunn (Bruce Willis), and Elijah/Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) that they do not have superpowers, and boy is that mistake.

Why to see it: "Glass" is the only January release we're really excited about, because we'll get to see Willis and Jackson reunited. We're ready to see both of them interact with McAvoy who carried "Split" for his standout performance playing over a dozen different personalities.

2. "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part"

Release date: Friday, February 8, 2019

What it's about: Five years after the first film, invaders from outer space capture Lucy (Elizabeth Banks) and it's up to Emmet to leave Bricksburg and save her.

Why we're excited: Both "The LEGO Movie" and its spin-off, "The LEGO Batman Movie," were fantastic. Original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wrote and produced the sequel. Part of their charm is that the duo don't follow conventional movie-making rules. Look at the title of this movie. Chris Pratt is voicing a character which is a spoof of both his "Jurassic World" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" characters in addition to his main character, Emmet. That's part of what makes most of their movies so fun to watch. (Have you seen "Spider-Verse"? Enough said.)

We're ready to see more of Will Arnett's tiny, egotistical Batman and the return of Jonah Hill's Green Lantern. Jason Momoa is supposed to reprise his role as Aquaman in Lego form, too. We're slightly concerned since the movie was pushed back from a 2018 release, but here's to hoping everything in the sequel is even more awesome.

Watch a trailer here

3. "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World"

Release date: February 22, 2019

What's it's about: The conclusion to the franchise sees Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon pal Toothless discover a vibrant, hidden dragon world and a group of very bad men try to steal the dragons.

Why it's a must-see: There are two big films for kids coming out in February and fans have been waiting four years for the next adventure of Hiccup and Toothless. The franchise notably champions those with prosthetics, inspiring that no limitation should prevent any one person from accomplishing great things, even ruling a group of Vikings.

Early buzz around the third film is that it's just as good, if not better than, the others. If you can't wait to see Kit Harington on the final season of "Game of Thrones," he reprises his character, Eret, here. You may want to bring some tissues along.

Watch a trailer here.
