7 of Martin Luther King Jr.'s family members who have continued his legacy

Martin Luther King Jr.

Civil rights leader and political activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. We honor his legacy every year with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

But there are other ways people are honoring MLK's legacy, and some of those people are his own relatives. All four of MLK's children are civil rights activists and have worked to continue their father's mission. Even Yolanda Renee King, the only granddaughter of MLK and Coretta Scott King, is on her way toward becoming an activist, and she's only 10 years old.

Keep scrolling to learn more about members of MLK's family who have worked to continue his legacy.

Coretta Scott King: widow

MLK and Coretta Scott King met while he was studying at Boston University and she at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. The two were married in 1953, and after completing their studies, moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where King would serve as pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.

The couple engaged in civil rights activism throughout the ensuing decades, until MLK's death in 1968. Coretta Scott King, however, went on to continue her activism for the rest of her life. She set up the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, and "traveled throughout the world speaking out on behalf of racial and economic justice, women’s and children’s rights, gay and lesbian dignity, religious freedom" and much more, according to the King Center's website.

Martin Luther King III: son

The eldest son of MLK and Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King III was born in 1957, making him only 11 years old at the time of his father's death. But he set out to continue his father's legacy. After graduating from Morehouse College in 1979, King III became an elected representative in Georgia.

He founded a nonprofit called Realizing The Dream in 2006, which eventually merged with The King Center. King III also received the Ramakrishna Bajaj Memorial Global Award "for outstanding contributions to the promotion of human rights" in 2010, and he continues to advocate for his father's mission of non-violence.

Yolanda King: daughter

Yolanda King was MLK and Coretta Scott King's first child, born in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama. She was 13 years old at the time of her father's passing, and she called him "my first buddy" and said she was "tremendously loved."

King continued her father's legacy as an actor and motivational speaker, advocating for equality and non-violence. According to The New York Times, King spent her life writing and producing plays and giving speeches to groups ranging from "elementary schoolchildren and Fortune 500 corporations." She also acted in commercials, and the common thread of her work was to infuse it "with her family’s deeper purposes."

She died in 2007 at the age of 51.

12 interesting takeaways from 'Fyre Fraud,' the new Fyre Festival documentary on Hulu

fyre fraud

  • "Fyre Fraud" was released on Hulu on earlier this week.
  • The Fyre Festival documentary featured interviews with Billy McFarland, one of the co-founders of the event.
  • The documentary chronicled McFarland's childhood, the lead up to Fyre Festival, the festival itself, and the aftermath.
  • The event has been highly publicized, but the documentary still had some new revelations.

In 2017, entrepreneur Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule came up with the idea for Fyre Festival, which was supposed to be a one-of-a-kind luxury music festival taking place on a private island in the Bahamas. McFarland spent millions of dollars advertising an Instagram-worthy dream that included fantastic musical acts, promised appearances by models and influencers, and stunning beachside villas.

In the end, Fyre Festival was an epic disaster. Attendees complained that it was incredibly disorganized and that they were left stranded in half-constructed FEMA tents with little food and running water. McFarland ended up in prison on charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and lying to law enforcement.

This past week, Hulu released their documentary "Fyre Fraud," which took a look at exactly how the festival fell apart. "Fyre Fraud" includes interviews with employees, journalists, the festival's social media person, and even McFarland himself, and it's pretty eye-opening.

Here are some of the biggest things we learned from watching the documentary:

McFarland claims one of his first entrepreneurial experiences was in second grade.

In "Fyre Fraud," one of the first things we learn is that McFarland was a very entrepreneurial child in elementary school. According to McFarland, when he was in second grade he learned how to hack his school's internet access, then he changed the administrator password and locked the teachers out of the school's AlphaSmarts so he could post messages on it that promoted his own business.

McFarland also said that in fifth grade while his friends were playing sports, he was acting like an adult and running his first "web-posting company," for which he said he had three full-time employees from India.

Before Fyre Festival, McFarland began a luxury credit card business and ticket-selling business.

After McFarland moved to Manhattan, he started Magnises, a luxury credit card business. In the documentary, McFarland said that it began when he figured out a way to remove the magnetic strip on his debit card and copy it onto a sheet of metal. The inspiration for the Magnises card came from the fact that he and his friends wanted the coveted American Express Black Card but didn’t make enough money to qualify.

One way McFarland got people interested in his company was by throwing parties at an expensive townhouse in the West Village. According to the NY Post, he was sued for damages by the owner. The card featured other perks, but the townhouse with an open bar and socializing potential is what some interviewees in the documentary said they believed got most people hooked.

One of his former employees said to pay for these damages, McFarland started selling tickets to expensive events. The former employee said McFarland would sell tickets to private J-Lo parties, Jay-Z and Beyonce concerts, and the Broadway show "Hamilton." She claimed that the night of, when people were supposed to receive their tickets, McFarland would buy the tickets for "insane prices," give them out, and then use those profits to buy tickets for other events he'd sold tickets to

According to the documentary, Kendall Jenner's post was a big deal in terms of Fyre Festival promotion.

Kendall Jenner posted about the festival on her Instagram, along with a message that G.O.O.D Music — Kanye West's record label — would be involved in the festival's headliners. Jenner even shared a personalized promotional code for tickets.

According to the documentary, this gave many people the impression that West himself would be performing in the Bahamas since G.O.O.D. Music was at the top of the line-up. Some influencers in the documentary said they believed Kanye West would be performing.

The Boeing 717 was once a failed plane airlines didn't want to buy. Here's why it's now my favorite jet. (BA)

Boeing 717

  • The Boeing 717 is a slightly offbeat aircraft that went out of production in 2006.
  • Boeing chalked it up as a failure, a result of absorbing some McDonnell Douglas planes when it acquired the planemaker in the mid-1990s.
  • But the 100-seat 717-200 is now in serious demand as carriers move away from regional jets.
  • I recently flew on a Delta Air Lines Boeing 717 from Newark to Detroit. It was my second time flying on this great aircraft.

I've flown on many big aircraft and plenty of small ones. I've flown on Boeings, Airbuses, and Embraers, Bombardiers and a host of more obscure names.

But until recently, I'd never set foot on a Boeing 717, a smaller aircraft that Boeing inherited when it bought McDonnell Douglas in 1995 for $13 billion.

I tend to like private jets, tolerate regional turboprops, richly enjoy big wide-bodies — and dislike the narrow-bodies that do most of the grunt work of hauling passengers around the US on domestic routes these days such as the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320.

The 717-200, in Delta livery, that I boarded once again this week for a flight to Detroit from Newark, New Jersey, wasn't a mystery — but it has been last year when I flew the aircraft for the first time. Back then, I wasn't sure what I was strapping myself into. I had forgotten to quiz Business Insider resident aviation authority, Senior Reporter Ben Zhang, before my flight.

Read more: I just got back from the 2019 Detroit auto show — here's all the cool stuff I saw.

But I figured out quickly what I was dealing with — and then settled back to enjoy the ride, which was unexpectedly thrilling. As you might imagine, I was thrilled that my plane was once again a Boeing 717-200.

The Boeing 717-200 is actually a rebranded McDonnell Douglas MD-95. Boeing acquired McDonnell in 1995 for $13 billion.

Sadly, as Business Insider's Ben Zhang reported, "On May 23, 2006, Boeing delivered the last two 717-200 jetliners to customers at its Long Beach, California, factory."

"It marked the end of a program filled with promise but that had ultimately failed to capture the interest of airlines. Even Boeing's well-oiled sales operation could only manage to muster up 156 orders for the little 100-seat, short-haul-airliner."

Despite being an apparent business failure with just 156 examples ever made, the 717 is now in high demand as a short-hauler, a 100-seater that can replace regional jets.

"What is this plane?" I asked myself last year.

20 things you didn't know about 'Legally Blonde'

legally blonde

  • "Legally Blonde" came out 18 years ago.
  • The movie has become beloved with quotes like "bend-and-snap" and "what? like it's hard" becoming part of pop culture.
  • Most recently, Ariana Grande did a take on the movie in her "Thank U, Next" music video.

It's been nearly 20 years since "Legally Blonde" hit theaters, and at this point, it's safe to call the film a classic. "Legally Blonde" features Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a blonde sorority girl who defies all stereotypes when she becomes determined to get accepted to Harvard Law School to win back an ex-boyfriend.

The facts about what went on behind the scenes while filming are just as interesting as the film, even so many years later. Here are are some "Legally Blonde" facts even the biggest fans didn't know:

It was based on a book that is based on a true story.

Before "Legally Blonde" the movie came "Legally Blonde" the book. It's written by Amanda Brown and tells the story of her own real experience at Stanford Law School, where she decided to go based on the shopping mall nearby.

Brown's letters to friends, which made fun of her classmates, became the basis of the book. She told the SF Gate,"I wrote it all on pink paper, with my pink furry pen. I finally found an agent who picked it up out of a slush pile because it was on pink paper."

The sorority voting on toilet paper was also based on a true story.

At the beginning of the movie, Elle's sorority group has a memorable scene where they vote on switching from Charmin toilet paper to generic paper. As ridiculous as it seems, it was based on a real story from co-screenwriter Karen McCullah's experience in a sorority at James Madison University.

McCullah later told Montpelier, "We were denied our toilet paper. I offered my sorority sisters activity points for stealing replacement rolls from the administration building."

The role of Elle Woods almost went to someone else.

It feels nearly impossible to imagine anyone else playing Elle Woods, but another actress almost did. Christina Applegate had the chance to try out to play Elle, but she told ETonline that she "got scared."She said, "What a stupid move that was, right?" But she also felt that the part went to the right actress, saying, "Reese deserved that. She did a much better job than I ever could, and so that's her life. That's her path."

Air Force F-22s and B-2 bombers are prowling the Pacific to send a message — and the photos are stunning

A B-2 Spirit bomber deployed from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, and F-22 Raptors from the Hawaii Air National Guard’s 154th Wing fly near Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, during a interoperability training mission Jan. 15, 2019.

  • The B-2 Spirit, a heavy bomber, and the F-22 Raptor, an unmatched air-superiority fighter, are stealth aircraft capable of slipping past enemy defenses to unleash a significant amount of firepower on enemy targets.
  • These two hard-hitting aircraft are training together in the Pacific, where China has sought to bolster its anti-access, area-denial capabilities to deter the US military.
  • The deployment to Hawaii is intended to reassure America's international partners while sending a warning to adversaries that "the B-2 is on watch 24 hours a day, seven days a week ready to protect our country and its allies."

The US Air Force has two of its most elite aircraft — the B-2 Spirit bomber and the F-22 Raptor — training together in the Pacific, reassuring America's allies and sending a warning to strategic competitors and adversaries about the sheer power the US brings to the table.

These stunning photos show the powerful aircraft tearing across the Pacific, where the US has increasingly found itself facing challenges from a rising China.

Detroit Auto Show 2019 photos

  • The 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit opens to the public on January 19 and runs through January 27.
  • This will be the final time the Detroit auto show takes place in January. In 2020, it will move to June.
  • New SUVs, sports cars, electric vehicles, and concepts made their North American debuts.
  • Ford, Cadillac, RAM, Infiniti, VW, and Subaru are all showing new vehicles.

The Detroit auto show opens to the public this coming weekend and runs for two weeks. I journeyed to Motown and took in as many reveals and debuts as I could.

The pickings were a tad slim this year, as this is the last time the show will take place in the middle of winter. In 2020, the event moves to June.

But in 2019, the show did go on, fast by the frigid banks of the Detroit River. There were pickups and SUVs galore, a few concepts, some much-anticipated sports cars, and a few electric rides.

The public might be disappointed by the lack of some big names at the show, such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. But of course that means there's more opportunity to take in new pickups from Ford, Chevy, RAM, and Jeep, not to mention a smattering of sedans and some high-performance metal.

Here's a rundown of all the interesting machines we saw:

7 swaps to lighten up your winter drinks

hot chocolate

  • The winter season comes with indulgences, including seasonal drinks.
  • Easy swaps can be made so that your holiday beverage of choice is a healthier option.
  • You don't have to lose out on taste in order to be healthy.

Between the holidays and the cold weather, winter can be a time of an indulgence.

There's no harm in treating yourself, but overindulging on winter drinks mixed with additives and calories isn't always the healthiest option. To help you find a happy medium, INSIDER asked some experts what the best winter drink swaps are.

For lighter hot chocolate, trying using nut milk or skim milk.

"Almond milk's light creamy texture and delicious flavor make it an ideal addition to recipes both sweet and savory," Julie Resnick, founder of @thefeedfeed told INSIDER. "It can be swapped for dairy in most recipes, making it an easy option for those who may be looking for a dairy alternative ... plus, it comes in a variety of flavors; unsweetened almond milk, which has zero grams of sugar."

Use Greek yogurt instead of whipped cream.

Monica Auslander Moreno, MS, RD, LD/N said it's just as decadent. "Instead of whipped cream, which can be laden with sugar and preservatives, top wintery drinks with a couple tablespoons of plain greek yogurt; add some water to thin; whisk with vanilla and raw stevia or honey," she suggested.

Make a pitcher of mimosa with pureed berries.

"Instead of a mimosa using orange juice, which is simply Vitamin C sugar," Moreno said, "puree/mash raspberries or strawberries with a mortar and pestle, add some chia seeds for fiber, and stir into prosecco or champagne."

7 foods you can eat if you're a vegan and on the Mediterranean diet

$

Mediterranean diet

  • The Mediterranean diet is an eating plan that limits meat and focuses on legumes, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Because of this, the diet is well-suited to vegans and vegetarians.
  • Beans, tofu, and nuts and seeds are some of the best foods to eat as a vegan on the Mediterranean diet.

Being a vegan can sometimes make it hard to implement a new style of eating into your life after all, if you've managed to figure out the protein and omega-3 sources that work for you, why mess with it? But if you are a vegan, it might be worth giving the Mediterranean diet a try.

This is because, as a vegan, chances are pretty good that you already eat many of the foods considered part of the Mediterranean diet. Dietitian Bonnie Taub-Dix, creator of BetterThanDieting.com and author of "Read it Before You Eat It — Taking You From Label To Table," told INSIDER that the diet is ideal for anyone who already follows a plant-based style of eating.

"It's really an easy diet to follow if you are vegetarian or vegan. This diet is based upon a foundation of whole grains, vegetables, and fruit," she said. "Where it's different than [the typical American diet] is that meat, poultry, and fish are treated more as a side dish than a main dish."

Here are the best foods to eat if you're a vegan looking to try the Mediterranean diet.

Beans are packed with protein.

Beans are a great way to get protein, fiber, and prevent heart disease, according to the American Heart Association. They are also a vital component of the Mediterranean diet.

"Beans are so commonly used in the Mediterranean, yet here it's almost an underrated superfood," Taub-Dix said. "They're in our supermarkets, but a lot of people just pass by them because they don't know what to do with them. But in most cases, it's not much harder than opening a can and rinsing them."

To get your legume fix, try mixing some beans (like chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, lentils, or peas) in a salad, soup, or platter of sauteed veggies. Just make sure you do rinse them because this helps to minimize sodium.

Tofu is a good meat replacement option.

The Mediterranean diet relies less on meat than some other diets.

Even fish and poultry, which, according to the Mayo Clinic, should be eaten at least twice a week, in the Mediterranean diet, are often treated as more of a "special occurrence" than a standard component of a meal, according to Taub-Dix.

To ensure you're getting enough protein, try adding small portions of tofu (which is made of soybeans, making it Mediterranean diet-friendly) to your meals a few times a week.

Nuts and seeds give you the omega-3 you need.

If you don't eat fish, it can be hard to get omega-3 fatty acids. As a replacement, Taub-Dix suggested implementing nuts and seeds including chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and flaxseeds, all of which provide protein as well as omega-3s.

That said, plant-based sources of omega-3 contain a type of omega-3 that is less active in the body than the type that comes from animal sources, according to Healthline. Because of this, you'll need to eat a lot of plant-based omega-3s or add a supplement to your diet.

Sunny beach Bulgaria

  • Each year, the UK-based site Post Office releases its Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer report.
  • The report analyzes the prices of essential items, such as food, drinks, and sunscreen, in 42 resorts and cities worldwide.
  • According to its most recent report, the cheapest place to travel in 2019 will be Sunny Beach, Bulgaria.
  • The seaside resort is home to luxurious hotels, thrilling water parks, historic towns, and inexpensive food.

Bulgaria might not be at the top of your travel bucket list, but, according to the UK-based Post Office, it should be.

For its annual Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer report, Post Office analyzed the prices of essential travel items such as food and sunscreen in 42 destinations around the world. The site then named the most cost-efficient travel spots of the year.

At the top of this year's list is Sunny Beach, Bulgaria. Not only are items at the resort inexpensive, but the location also has plenty of attractions to offer. From beautiful beaches to daring theme parks, these photos of Sunny Beach might make you want to vacation there.

This Bulgarian resort isn't your standard vacation spot.

Instead, Sunny Beach is practically its own city. The resort is home to a bunch of luxurious hotels, as well as attractions for a wide range of travelers.

Unsurprisingly, the resort is most well-known for its beaches.

Located along the Black Sea, Sunny Beach is surrounded by tons of separate beaches, including Irakli and Pomorie. But to enjoy the sun and sand while at the resort, beachgoers will want to head to the destination's beachfront.

According to The Crazy Tourist, Beachfront visitors have the option to rent parasols, enjoy seaside bars, or jump on bouncy castles. Of course, simply relaxing is an option too.

Bulgaria can get extremely hot in the summer, so it's best to stay hydrated. Thankfully, mineral water is sold at the resort for as little as 49¢, according to Post Office.

But if relaxing indoors is more your style, Sunny Beach has plenty of spas and Turkish baths available.

One place to indulge in spa services is at the Erma Spa. Located in the center of the Sunny Beach resort, the spa offers everything from cosmetic treatments to cold baths.

The location has also recieved tons of rave reviews on Trip Advisor, with some visitors calling it "excellent" and "the best one in Sunny Beach."

These popular K-beauty watermelon masks and moisturizers keep selling out — we tried the new skin care brand's best sellers to figure out why

glow recipe kbeauty 3

  • Mention the word "watermelon" in any beauty and skincare forum and associations immediately jump to Korean beauty and skincare brand Glow Recipe
  • Founded by two former L'Oréal execs in 2014, Glow Recipe hopes to make K-beauty more accessible to US shoppers.
  • Judging by the sales of its hyper-successful watermelon-infused skincare products, including the cult-favorite Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask ($45), it has established itself as a brand to watch as interest in K-beauty continues to grow.
  • We learned more about Glow Recipe's journey to $30 million in sales, and tried out its best sellers for ourselves.

Starting a new beauty and skincare brand is risky. In a highly saturated market, it's all too easy to lose footing if you fail to recognize what skincare enthusiasts want from their products. Even more importantly, you must anticipate and lead them to the products they didn't even know they needed.

So how did Glow Recipe, the Korean beauty and skincare startup that has done $30 million in sales in just four years, do it?

For starters, it helps to have founders with proven experience in the industry. As former vice presidents of global marketing at L'Oréal, Sarah Lee and Christine Chang were the only two employees with expertise in both the Korean and American markets.

Lee told Business Insider:

When my partner Christine and I set out to build Glow Recipe in 2014, it was because we saw an enormous opportunity to leverage our bicultural and bilingual beauty backgrounds in a market that was just waiting to become the next big thing — at the time, K-beauty was on the cusp of exploding in the US.

And herein was the white space: the absence of a stakeholder who had the ability to identify, market, and nurture Korean products and brands with the potential to become key players, and make them relevant and appealing to American consumers.

Glow Recipe's mission, Lee says, is "to break down what K-beauty [is] all about, educate consumers on the unique trends coming out of Korea, bring them best-in-class skincare offerings, and make them accessible to American consumers through repositioning and education."

glow recipe kbeauty

The concept of curating and introducing natural K-beauty products to US shoppers led them to everyone's favorite reality competition show "Shark Tank" in 2015, where they accepted an offer with Robert Herjavec. Off-screen, however, Lee and Chang ultimately decided to continue self-funding their business and have done perfectly well without the Shark's assistance.

The company's real breakout moment came in 2017 with the launch of its eponymous brand and Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask product ($45). The mask has sold out seven consecutive times and attracted 5,000-person waitlists, and it was one of Sephora's bestselling products in 2017.

Having officially entered the beauty big leagues, Glow Recipe followed up with additional hits like the Watermelon Glow Jelly Sheet Mask ($8), Watermelon Pink Juice Moisturizer ($39, sold out within two hours of being made available for pre-sale), and most recently, the Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask ($45).

Though K-beauty is known for its high levels of innovation and experimentation, its approach to skincare, which Chang calls "skin-tertainment," is also a hallmark. She explains that self-care and pampering lie at the core of skincare, and K-beauty makes this ritual fun, shareable, and accessible with its "unique textures and visual formats."

Another feature of K-beauty is "natural skincare with compelling ingredient stories." You see this clearly laid out in the Watermelon Glow collection, which highlights the nourishing antioxidant powers of the fruit. Elsewhere, brands like Youth to the People are also taking advantage of the properties of superfoods.

We had the opportunity to try some Glow Recipe's fun and innovative skincare products for ourselves, and you can find each of the reviews below.

Insider Picks reporter Mara Leighton tried the product that put Glow Recipe on the map. She says:

Glow Recipe's watermelon mask has been a great, easy addition to my nighttime moisturizing routine a few days every week. The mask smells amazing, and I do wake up to far softer, more hydrated skin in the morning — without the clogged pores that can accompany thicker masks.

However, it hasn't been enough on its own to solve all my dry winter skin problems, and I see more immediate results than long-term. For the extra heavy lifting, I usually look to Neogen's Micro Ferment Essence and Maelove's The One Cream

Watermelon Pink Juice Moisturizer

Watermelon Pink Juice Moisturizer, $39, available at Sephora

Like a first kiss, you always remember your first encounter with a beauty product. For me, I caught a whiff of this moisturizer's refreshing watermelon scent while browsing the aisles at Sephora and knew I had to try it.

I apply this light, gel-like moisturizer every morning, and it's like I've just splashed my face with watermelon juice (minus the stickiness). It contains hyaluronic acid, which I've discovered is the best way to hydrate my dry skin and works with the watermelon extract to make my skin soft and glowing throughout the day.

Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask

Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask, $45, available at Sephora

While the watermelon products have a jelly-like, bouncy feel, this mask has a thick and creamy texture expected of its star ingredient, the avocado. On average, I use it twice a week on top of my regular nighttime routine and wake up with noticeably softer skin.

In addition to avocado, which hydrates and supports natural collagen, it features manuka honey, an exfoliating PHA, and pore-clearing kaolin clay. It has a heavier (but soothing) texture that feels especially comforting at the end of a long day, yet still smells fresh and isn't overpowering.

People are using the viral '10-year challenge' as a stark warning about what's happening to our planet

  • Social media feeds are currently filled with "10-year challenge" posts that juxtapose users' photos from 2009 and 2019.
  • Environmental activists are using the trend to draw attention to how much Earth has changed in the last 10 years, posting side-by-side images of our planet's recent transformation.
  • This year has started off with a slew of depressing news about climate change: Last year was the hottest year on record for the world's oceans (which are also warming up faster than we thought), and Antarctic ice is melting faster than it used to.

The new year has delivered a one-two punch of bad news about the world's oceans.

Not only did 2018 turn out to be the oceans' warmest year on record, but scientists realized that oceans are also heating up 40% faster than they'd previously thought. What's more, research has revealed that the Antarctic Ice Sheet is melting nearly six times faster than it was in 1980s.

So when a viral photo challenge emerged in which users juxtapose pictures of themselves from 2009 and today, some environmentalists seized on the opportunity to highlight Earth's own "10-year challenge."

Sites like Reddit and Instagram are exploding with posts that call for greater public awareness about the impacts of climate change. While the original challenge is meant to provide a visual representation of the way someone has matured or changed, the climate-change versions convey a more serious message: this is the 10-year challenge we need to start focusing on.

Many of the 10-year comparison photos show melting glaciers — one of the most visually dramatic effects of a warming planet.

Melting glaciers mean the North and South Poles are slowly getting make-overs (and not the good kind). In a worst-case scenario, called a "pulse," warmer water could cause the glaciers holding back Antarctica and Greenland's ice sheets to collapse. That would send massive quantities of ice into the oceans, potentially leading to rapid sea-level rise around the world.

If a pulse were to happen, the sea level in South Florida could increase by 10 to 30 feet by 2100. But because water — like most things — expands when it warms, sea-level rise is inevitable even if the ice sheets don't melt, since the oceans absorb 93% of the extra heat that greenhouse gases trap in the atmosphere.

It's one thing to talk about these threats in the abstract. But it's a different ballgame when we see visual proof.

The top photo here shows the Rhone glacier in Switzerland now, while the bottom shows how much more ice there was in 2009.

Glaciologists think half of Switzerland's small glaciers — and the streams they feed — will be gone within the next 25 years, according to Reuters.

Although many glaciers have shrunk dramatically in the last decade, juxtapositions that show their changes over a longer period of time are even more striking.

This pair of images shows the retreat of Alaska's Pedersen Glacier between 1917 and 2005.

These photos of Alaska's Muir Glacier are placed on top of each other so you can swipe back and forth to see how much has melted over the last 120-plus years.

12 details you probably missed in 'Unbreakable' and 'Split' that hint at the plot of 'Glass'

  • Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for "Glass."
  • "Glass"— the sequel to "Unbreakable" and "Split," starring Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, and Samuel L. Jackson — is in theaters.
  • If you go back and watch the first two films, both contain dialogue, comic images, and scenes that appear to hint at the latest movie.
  • A twist in "Glass" was majorly hinted at in "Split" and Elijah's mother teases the plot for "Glass" towards the end of "Unbreakable."

"Glass," which follows three men who believe they have super abilities, is finally in theaters. It's the end of the trilogy that first started with "Unbreakable" 19 years ago, and stars Bruce Willis as David Dunn, James McAvoy as Kevin, Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price.

Many moviegoers may be shocked by how many tiny references and nods to "Glass" were in M. Night Shyamalan's earlier films, "Unbreakable" and "Split." The famed director told The Hollywood Reporter that James McAvoy's character Kevin — who was first introduced in 2017's "Split"— was even a part of the original script for 2000's "Unbreakable."

INSIDER recently watched each film in the trilogy and rounded up the tiny moments, pieces of dialogue, and images that all appear to have been hinting at the plot of "Glass." Keep reading to see everything we noticed.

The first limited-edition comic book Elijah Price/Mr. Glass ever receives as a child hints at a future showdown between David and The Beast.

On the surface, the comic looks like a tease of the rooftop showdown between David's hero and Kevin's villain the Beast that Elijah attempts to orchestrate in "Glass," but it's so much more than that.

Most notable here is the use of color.

In each of the three movies, director M. Night Shyamalan has used a distinct color to identify each of his main characters. Often seen in their clothes, there's purple for Elijah, green for David, and yellow for Kevin.

Despite the main fight serving as the comic cover's focal point, it's important to note the color purple. The hero and villain are surrounded by it, not only on the comic cover, but also in the tissue wrapping. On the comic cover, it's present in the background, just as Mr. Glass is an omniscient presence ultimately presiding over major events in both David and Kevin's lives.

It's Mr. Glass who brings the two together in the movie because of the train derailment in "Unbreakable" and then who wants to orchestrate a fight between the two on top of a new building in Philadelphia.

That same scene between Elijah and his mother may contain another reference to "Glass."

When a young Elijah discovers the limited edition comic waiting for him in "Unbreakable," his mother tells him, "They say this one has a surprise ending."

If you think about that line now, maybe it didn't refer to the ending of "Unbreakable," but the ending of "Glass," which kills off all of its three main characters. That was certainly a surprise.

Mrs. Price asks her son in "Glass" if their story is a limited edition. Elijah tells his mother it's not, and instead responds that it's an origin story, suggesting there is more to come despite their deaths.

Another comic later in "Unbreakable" appears to hint at the connection between Mr. Glass, David Dunn, and the Beast as well.

While in a comic-book store, Mr. Price/Glass stumbles upon a comic called "The Adventures of Sentryman." It shows a Captain America-type going up against a group of villains.

At first glance, it looks like the comic simply illustrates the relationship between Elijah and David as archenemies where Elijah is the purple villain the supehero (David) approaches. But lurking in the right corner is a third character, which appears to hint at the Beast introduced in "Split."

A black creature with red eyes towers behind the purple villain. In "Split," also seen above, drawings made by one of Kevin's personalities depict the Beast as a black creature with red eyes. Not only is it fascinating to see a beast creature on the magazine cover, but it's notable that he's in the purple villain's corner.

In "Glass," Price convinces The Beast to team up and serves as his protector.

GOLDMAN SACHS: Earnings are drying up as a recession looms — but you should still buy these 17 stocks to profit from their exploding margins

trader happy celebrate cheer nyse

  • Cries for an imminent recession are getting louder by the day, but there are still ways to make money in the stock market by choosing companies set to thrive in a late-cycle environment.
  • Goldman Sachs has identified the 17 companies it says will grow margins the most in 2019, which should make them good buys.

No matter how optimistic an economist may be these days, chances are they'll still tell you a recession is coming in the next year or two.

That's a view also shared by equity strategists all across Wall Street. To them, it's not a matter of whether we're going to get a recession — it's a question of when. The spectre of that eventual economic meltdown hangs over their commentary like a dark cloud, and also informs the majority of their investing recommendations.

That's certainly true for Goldman Sachs. And the good news there is that the firm has a veritable war chest of suggestions to help the average investor navigate choppy waters.

Read more: RECESSION WATCH: Goldman Sachs has created a 5-part checklist for investors looking to avoid the next economic meltdown

One way Goldman says to play an aging economic cycle is by buying stock in companies poised to see robust margin growth. After all, margins — and, by extension, earnings — normally get constrained in a late-cycle environment. So identifying the exceptions can be a profitable endeavor.

With that established, here are the 17 stocks Goldman says will expand their margins the most in 2019.

Note that these are the only companies in the universe screened by Goldman poised to see margin growth exceeding 100 basis points. They're listed in increasing order of 2019 expected margin expansion.

Others, like Airbnb, Jaguar and Land Rover are sitting this year out. As is Skittles — which is trying and steal attention from the main stage by putting together a one night-only play called "Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical" in lieu of a traditional Super Bowl ad.

Here's a first look at all the advertisers that are confirmed to be buying ads in the big game. We'll update the post as more advertisers confirm their participation and as the teasers and ads roll out.

Anheuser-Busch InBev

The brewer is leaving no stone unturned to make its presence known at the Super Bowl this year, with eight ads featuring five brands and seven products slated to run.

Brands including Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Stella and Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer are all running ads, amounting to nearly 5 minutes of ad time in total.

Audi

Audi is using its 60-second spot during the second quarter of the big game to showcase its electronic car range E-Tron.

The spot has been produced by its agency Venables Bell & Partners, and is the automaker's 10th Super Bowl appearance.

Avocados from Mexico

The brand is coming back to the Super Bowl for the fifth consecutive year with its signature humor in a 30-second ad slated to run in the second quarter.

The spot, by agency EnergyBBDO, will showcase its tagline "Always Worth It."

Whole Foods

  • Whole Foods has nearly 500 locations across North America and the United Kingdom.
  • We visited Whole Foods locations in Darien, Connecticut, and New York City to see whether the supermarket chain is better in the city or in the suburbs.
  • It was a close call, but the suburban store ultimately provided the best shopping experience.

From an unparalleled variety of healthy foods to great deals thanks to Amazon, it's no wonder why shoppers all over the country flock to Whole Foods Market to do their grocery shopping.

We decided to put the supermarket chain to the test by visiting both suburban and urban locations in order to determine which provided the best shopping experience. For the suburban category, we visited the Darien, Connecticut, location, about an hour outside of New York City. For the urban category, we shopped at the chain’s Midtown East location in New York.

After taking note of the size, selection, and check-out process of each store, we found that both suburban and urban locations provided a pleasant shopping experience. However, the more spacious nature of the Darien store, combined with added perks like a coffee shop and gelato bar, made the suburban store stand out.

Keep reading for more on why it's best to shop at Whole Foods in the suburbs:

Rudy Giuliani

  • Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump's attorney, has been at the forefront of the administration's response to several controversies facing the president.
  • Before he was at the vocal center of the president's multiple scandals, Giuliani was the widely hailed mayor of America's largest city who lead the country through national tragedy.
  • See his journey from high-powered politician to controversial commentator.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has had a high-profile ride from lawyer to New York politician to presidential candidate to President Donald Trump's attorney.

He's also been a larger-than-life public presence who's dabbled in drag, led the country through the tragedy of September 11, 2001, and had a series of rocky in-person and on-air appearances of late.

When Giuliani was booed at a Yankees game last year, it became clear he had taken on a new reputation that was far from being "America's Mayor" who showed courageous leadership after the 9/11 attacks.

10 of the most shocking twists and turns of El Chapo's drug-trafficking trial, so far

El Chapo

  • Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is on trial in Brooklyn, charged with 17 counts of having links to drug trafficking in the US and Mexico.
  • The trial started in November 2018, and prosecutors have brought in a number of people to testify against Guzman, including cartel cohorts and one of his mistresses.
  • The trial has exposed secret escape tunnels, naked escapes, bribes, and people within the Mexican government have been accused of accepting bribes.

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's federal trialreads like a telenovela.

The Mexican drug lord has watched from his seat in a Brooklyn courtroom as prosecutors have brought out cartel cohorts, a Colombian kingpin, and even a mistress to testify against him.

The trial has led to accusations of murder rooms, secret tunnels, and bribes. Mexican government leaders have also been accused of accepting bribes — including former President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Guzman pleaded not guilty to drug-trafficking charges connected to claims that he built a multibillion-dollar fortune by smuggling cocaine and other drugs across the Mexico-US border.

He is charged with 17 counts of having links to drug trafficking in the US and Mexico.

Here are the most shocking twists and turns that have happened at his trial so far.

SEE ALSO: El Chapo's 7-year-old twin daughters attended his trial for the first time since it started

Prosecutors say Guzman sent "more than a line of cocaine for every single person in the United States" in just four shipments.

In opening arguments for the case, Assistant US Attorney Adam Fels described the amount of cocaine Guzman was accused of trafficking over the border.

He said that in just four of his shipments, he sent "more than a line of cocaine for every single person in the United States,"according to the BBC.

That amounts to more than 328 million lines of cocaine, Fels said.

A former Colombian kingpin who altered his face to hide his identity explained international drug trafficking to the court.

Former Colombian kingpin Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadia testified how his Norte del Valle cartel used planes and ships to bring cocaine to Mexico, where the Sinaloa cartel would smuggle it to the US under the direction of Guzman.

Abadia testified that he kept a ledger that showed how much hit men were paid and that he bribed Colombian authorities with millions of dollars.

He estimated that he smuggled 400,000 kilos of cocaine, ordered 150 killings, and amassed a billion-dollar fortune through his cartel.

He was arrested in 2007 and extradited to the United States, where he pleaded guilty to murder and drug charges.

The son of one of Sinaloa cartel's top leaders testified against Guzman.

Much of the prosecution team's hard-hitting testimony came from its star witness, Vicente Zambada Niebla.

Zambada is the son of one of the cartel's top leaders, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, who is considered one of Guzman's peers within the Sinaloa cartel hierarchy.

The younger Zambada, nicknamed El Vicentillo, described in detail the exploits of the cartel in his testimony against Guzman.

In one bit of testimony, Zambada said Guzman had the brother of another cartel leader killed because he would not shake his hand when they met to make peace in a gang war.

"When [Rodolfo] left, Chapo gave him his hand and said, 'See you later, friend,' and Rodolfo just left him standing there with his hand extended," Zambada said, according to BBC.

The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to drug-trafficking charges in Chicago in 2013 and to a trafficking-conspiracy charge in Chicago days before Guzman's trial began.

Guzman's defense attorneys have argued that Zambada's father is, in fact, the true leader of the Sinaloa cartel.
