El Celler de Can Roca

For foodies hoping to nab a reservation at El Celler de Can Roca, the Spanish restaurant that was named the best restaurant in the world for 2013, bad news  the waiting list for a table is 12 months.

According to Bloomberg Muse food critic Richard Vines, who recently reviewed the restaurant, El Celler's wait list since has grown from 10 months to a year since the award was announced in April, and there's a backlog of 3,000 requests.

El Celler employs three people just to turn away eager diners, one of the three brothers who own the restaurant told Vines.

The restaurant, in Girona, Spain, has been serving modern Spanish cuisine since it opened in 1986. The Roca brothers, who run the critically-acclaimed establishment, split their duties between the kitchen and front of house.

Flickr user Encantadisimo was lucky enough to dine at El Celler in 2011 and again in 2013. He shared pictures of his most recent experience with Business Insider, where he and a companion shared the "Menú Degustació de Classics," a seven-course tasting menu with the restaurant's most beloved dishes.

With the wine pairing, the meal cost $248 per person.

El Celler de Can Roca is in a suburban neighborhood in Girona, Spain.

Inside, the decor is airy and modern with glass walls and white table cloths.

The first round of appetizers was brought out under a paper globe advertised as "biting the world." It opens as a fan to reveal ...

The Most Expensive Business Schools In America

NYU Stern

Business school costs a lot of money. Period.

But when you're factoring in the cost of business school, it's not the tuition alonewhich costs more than $60,000 on averagethat you have to consider.

You also have to think about everything from the cost of health insurance to books, a computer, and other supplies. Then there are the hidden fees that you probably don't factor in, like loan fees, transportation, business attire, and networking costs (taking people out to lunch, attending conferences, and more).

Add in the cost of living (which can be quite high in a city like New York), and you've got yourself a lot of debt.

We looked at each school's total cost estimate for the first year of business schoolmost of which assume that students are living a very modest lifestyle. We didn't even include extras like study abroad costswhich are popular add-ons in business schoolor miscellaneous fees like club dues. Schools that provided tuition costs for the entire duration of the program were excluded.

We found that the cost of tuition pales in comparison to the total cost of these MBA programsin fact, the true cost of a MBA is often double the cost of tuition.

canada quebec train crash fire

Early in the morning of July 6, a 72-car train loaded with crude oil ran out of control and crashed into the center of a small Quebec town.

The resulting inferno — so large it could easily be spotted in satellite imagery— leveled entire blocks and killed nearly 50 people.

Officials from Canada's Transportation Safety Board immediately headed out to Lac-Mégantic to find the cause of the disaster.

Along with updates on their findings, officials have released photos from the scene of the accident and its aftermath.

The images of the blaze and resulting destruction are hard to believe.

The train consisted of five locomotives and 72 tanker cars full of crude oil.

It had been parked overnight at the top of a hill, but somehow the brakes failed or were released, and the train rolled down, derailed, and crashed into the town.

Witnesses reported as many as six explosions, and a huge inferno engulfed much of the small town.

5 Overpriced Items You Should Never Buy In A Grocery Store

$
0
0

supermarket, grocery store, shoppingMake a list and stick to it. That's one of the best ways to be kind to a budget at the grocery store. You avoid impulse purchases because of hunger or tempting specialty items.

But even the most prudent listmaker might not be protected from paying too much at the grocery store.

That's because manufacturers know which favorite products can fetch higher prices -- and they don't shy away from marking them up tremendously.

To keep from paying more than you have to next time you’re shopping, think twice about tossing any of these five most marked-up items into your cart.

Bottled Water: 4,000% Average Markup

Gulp! Sure, it's handy, but the manufacturing costs of producing plastic for the convenient containers make bottled water one of the worst values at the supermarket, said Jackie Warrick, president and chief savings officer at online coupon site couponcabin.com.

You can save big bucks by investing in a filter for your home faucet (most are under $100) or a pitcher that filters water for around $30 -- as well as a reusable plastic water bottle. That way, you can have all the bottled-tasting H2O you can guzzle without your hard-earned cash going down the drain. (Also handy: Wash out wide-mouthed sports drink bottles, fill up with ice and add a little water. Within an hour, you'll have cold water on a hot summer day for the kids.)

Name-Brand Spices: 100% Markup

They're given a lot of real estate on the shelves and even have their own television commercials. But: "Essentially, you're paying for the brand name and nothing else," Warrick said. The flavor and potency of name-brand spices are the same as generic ones.

Save some cash and skip buying name-brand spices. Instead, pluck the generic store brands from the shelf. Or look to the bulk foods section for spices you use often, such as cinnamon, dried parsley, etc. If a recipe calls for a spice you don't use regularly, you can buy exactly the amount you need in the bulk section -- that way, you won't waste money or ingredients. Better yet, get your garden going -- or at least a few pots inside in your home -- to have access to your favorite fresh herbs.

Household Specialty Items: Up To 60% Markup

You might think it's easier to pick up light bulbs, school supplies or duct tape at the grocery store instead of making an extra stop at another store. But you're going to pay a hefty price for that convenience because items that aren't food and drinks are costly at the grocery store.

Household items at grocery stores are marked up as much as 60% more than their price at office supply, home improvement and other similar specialty stores.

"You have to weigh the pros and cons of saving money by going to another store or the convenience factor of being able to pick it up in one spot," Warrick said.

stefano gabbana mark hotel $60 million penthouseThe New York Post is reporting that Stefano Gabbana (of Dolce & Gabbana fame) is a new potential buyer for the penthouse on top of Manhattan's Mark Hotel.

He was seen taking a tour of the $60 million pad in the midst of Dolce & Gabbana's legal trouble in Italy: The fashion duo were recently sentenced to 20 months in jail and a fine of €343 million ($455 million) after being accused of tax evasion.

They are currently appealing the ruling, but if it stands the famous fashion powerhouse could be forced to close, Domenico Dolce told Forbes.

The $60 million, 9,800-square-foot penthouse, which has been on the market since March, is one of 10 co-ops inside the 150-room hotel. It has six bedrooms, several galleries, a skylit conservatory, and a wraparound terrace that adds another 2,400 square feet of space.

Plus, there are some perks to living in a hotel. Residents can order room service from The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges on the first floor, and a Frédéric Fekkai salon and gym operated by Punch are right downstairs, too.

The 16-story hotel, located on 77th St. and Madison Ave., was originally built in 1927.

The interior of the hotel and 10 co-ops were designed by award-winning French designer Jacques Grange.

The Mark is a popular hangout for celebrities, and residents are sure to catch sight of a few A-listers. Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake have partied at the hotel.

A 15-foot blue rooster was unveiled in central London's Trafalgar Square today.

Rising up amid the serious military monuments and statues of British heroes, the playful statue is by German artist Katharina Fritsch and is appropriately titled "Hahn/Cock."

The rooster currently perches on the vacant "Fourth Plinth"— which has been the location of a series of artworks lately— and should probably just stay there forever.

The Hamptons — a favorite vacation destination of the rich and famous as well as New York's 'it' crowd — is actually composed of roughly 20 different villages, each one with its own unique flavor.

For this list, we ranked each destination on their quality of beaches, restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and real estate, as well as how many celebrities live in the area. We know some people go to the Hamptons to escape nightlife and the celebrity scene, but we included them in this ranking because they have a big impact on local tourism.

We assigned each category a score between 1 and 10, meaning the highest total score any Hamptons town could get was 60.

Without further ado, here are the nine best hamlets in the Hamptons.

9. Sagaponack

Sagaponack The Hamptons rural scene

This tiny village is renowned for its rural beauty, with some of the most scenic beaches in the area.

The major downside of Sagaponack is that its too small for any theaters or shopping — for those, you would need to travel to nearby Southampton or East Hampton.

Well-known faces who have homes in Sagaponack include “Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon and Goldman Sachs Chairman Lloyd Blankfein.

6 Times That Being Cheap Will Cost You

$
0
0

costco

Thrifty shoppers are always looking for ways to save money whenever possible, whether by cutting weekly or monthly spending, or by stretching your dollar through sales and coupons.

But take heed, because some common efforts to save actually result in wasting money.

Changing the way you shop, switching to a different financial service, and more — all under the guise of saving — can often be more detrimental than you might think. Instead, think twice and avoid these common pitfalls.

Switching Banks

Why You Think It Saves Money: "Why am I paying all these bank account fees? I'm going to switch banks for a free checking account and more ATMs."

How You Can Overspend: Despite last year's fervor for Bank Transfer Day, switching banks can be costly. You can easily incur overdraft fees from un-posted or pre-written checks and from transitioning automatic bill payments and direct deposits. New deposit requirements or availability policies can result in low-balance fees while you learn how to maintain "free" checking accounts.

Smarter Saving: Find a bank that offers free checking with no requirements and a ready-made bank "switch kit." Keep your old checking account open for several months until you are certain all automatic payments and checks have cleared.

Spending for Rewards

Why You Think It Saves Money: "I get cash back for things I buy anyway, so put it on the credit card."

How You Can Overspend: According to a recent Nilson Report, average monthly spending on a non-rewards credit card totaled $465; with rewards, it reached $890. Clearly, it's easy to feel compelled to spend more when you think that you're earning rewards. But be careful, balances carried over can quickly eclipse rewards as you'll have to pay off interest on your principle balance. Personal finance experts warn, also, that mental accounting weakens with credit card spending. You'll likely have a harder time keeping track of what you're charging, than if you were paying for everything in cash.

Smarter Saving: Stick to your shopping budget and always pay off credit card balances before their due date. For rotating rewards categories, spend only in those higher-paying categories (for example, 5% on groceries vs. 1% on gas). Search for a reward credit card with no rewards expiration dates and no annual fees.

Sharing Your Max Monthly Payment

Why You Think It Saves Money: "The salesman will stick to my monthly payment budget if I tell him what it is."

How You Can Overspend: Rather than offering you the best price for an item (paid for in installments, like a car or loan), salesmen often try to bloat the package cost so that it reaches (or goes slightly over) your max budget. If they know you're willing to spend a certain amount each month, you can bet they won't opt to undersell you.

Smarter Saving: Stay focused on cutting the overall price of your purchase so that you'll end up with a lower monthly payment. Don't let salespeople pack any extras into your plan.

The 10 Coolest Hotel Pools In Las Vegas

$

3 liquid day club vegas

Of the nearly 40 million people who visited last year, The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority estimates that about half of them were there for pleasure and recreation—and no doubt a good number of them started their recreational activities poolside.

The growing number of dayclubs—featuring celebrity DJs, celebrity revelers, and over-the-top cabanas—cater to those who don't want to wait for the sun to go down to get the party started. But there are plenty of choices for those seeking sun-drenched serenity, and some great family options, too.

With things heating up, here are 10 top picks for getting into the swim of things in Sin City.

Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Something of the new kid on the block, the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas has one of the hippest pool scenes in town. By day, Boulevard boasts an expansive view of the Strip below, as well as a shaded area for foosball, ping-pong, and billiards.

Cool off with liquid nitrogen-charged booze-spiked popsicles, sorbets, and cocktails. During the summer, Monday nights are "Dive-In Movies" night, with screenings of classic, cult, and blockbuster films shown on its 65-foot digital marquee.

Marquee Dayclub on the 17th floor, with cabanas that boast their own private infinity pools, is party central. (Bamboo and Boulevard open to guests only; Boulevard opened to non-guests for evening events; Marquee Dayclub admission begins at $20)

Caesars

At Caesars, all roads lead poolside. There are eight pools spread over an expansive ground-floor "oasis," set amid classical statuary, waterfalls, and fountains.

The Temple pool is a popular splash zone for kids, while Venus is the resort's "European" pool (that's Vegas code for swimsuit tops optional), and Fortuna features swim-up blackjack underneath its 18-foot waterfall.

The Bacchus pool, however, is reserved for high-profile guests, so unless you're, say, a member of the "Hangover 3" cast, this probably won't be an option. (Free for hotel guests; open to non-guests: $10 Monday-Thursday, $20 Friday-Sunday)

ARIA Las Vegas

Local and celebrity DJs spin music poolside at this dayclub tucked discreetly away from Aria's three resort pools, but it's smaller (16,000 square feet) than many pool clubs, and the vibe is decidedly more low key.

Trees, vine-laden trellises, and exotic-looking flora add to the island mood, while the wicker furniture with mattresses in neutral shades bring a modern touch.

If you feel like checking it out first, Liquid has its own restaurant that guests can enjoy without paying a cover charge. (Open to guests and non-guests with cover charges starting at $10)

13 Things You Need To Be Doing If You Use Apple's iCloud (AAPL)

$
0
0

icloudIt's been two years since Apple launched its online storage system, iCloud, to the public.

In the past few months, people have been talking about the storage system's shortcomings, even calling it "broken."

Every user with an Apple ID gets 5 GB of storage for free to back up apps and settings from their iPhone, iPad, or iPod. The service also syncs your photos, documents, and email with your Mac and mobile devices.

The idea behind iCloud is to be able to access all your stuff no matter what Apple device you're using.

But while iCloud is baked into all Apple products, it can be a bit confusing to use and get the most out of it. Here are some great tips to make sure you're getting the most out of Apple's cloud service.

The first thing you should do is set up two-step verification

Apple's two-step verification process adds an extra layer of security to your iCloud account. It requires you to enter a second unique password every time you log in. It's easy to set up:

  1. Head to appleid.apple.com and sign in with the same email address and password you use to download apps.
  2. Next, head to the Password & Security section in the bottom left corner.
  3. The first option is for two-step verification, click the blue "Get Started" button to begin.

Apple makes you wait approximately three days before you can enable two-step verification.

Make sure iCloud is activated on all of your devices. Here's how to activate it on Mac.

  1. Head to System Preferences and select iCloud
  2. Sign in with your AppleID and password
  3. Check all of the items you would like to sync: photos, contacts, email, etc.

Here's how to activate iCloud on your mobile device (iPhone/iPad/iPod)

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Navigate to the iCloud menu and switch it on.
  3. Choose what you would like to be saved in the cloud.

10 Things You Probably Never Knew About Money

$
0
0

MoneyOnTheStreet

Money - it's something we all use every day, but rarely think about, except to lament that we don't have enough of it.

The U.S. has been making money since 1792. That first money was in the form of coins.

These early coins were made of precious metals and had actual value. It wasn't until 1862 during the Civil War that the Department of Treasury produced paper money, which isn't actually paper; it's cotton.

It was created to make up for the coin shortage. Since those early coins contained valuable metals, Americans began hording them as a hedge against the fluctuations in money created by the war.

Coins have ridges to protect against counterfeiting.

Most of us use coins to purchase items from vending machines, or we throw them in a bank to save for a rainy day, but coins have a fascinating history. Did you ever wonder why the quarter has those ridges on the edge? They were created to prevent counterfeiting. Yes, even back in those gentler times of Colonial America there were improvising criminals trying to counterfeit money. These counterfeiters would shave the edges off of coins because they were made of silver and gold. A ten dollar gold piece was made with ten dollars worth of gold.

To make a little extra money, people would shave the edges of the coins and collect the metal. If done well enough, the smaller coins would not be noticed by merchants and they in effect would get less than ten dollars in gold for a purchase. This gave the counterfeiter extra gold or silver to make into more coins. Today, the ridges remain as a form of "braille" for the seeing impaired. There are 119 grooves on the edge of a quarter.

A dollar bill only lasts 18 months before it wears out.

The dollar bill is the most circulated bill in the U.S. One-dollar bills account for 48% of the paper bills printed by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. A dollar bill usually makes it through around 18 months of use before it wears out.

If you take the time to look at the dollar bill you will notice a few things. It's easy to notice the "all seeing eye" over the pyramid, the eagle with 13 arrows in its talons and the Latin phrase E Pluribus Unum (Out of many, One). There are a few things, however, you might have missed, such as other phrases on the bill:

  • Annuit Coeptis - "God (or He/Providence) has favored our undertakings"
  • Novus ordo seclorum - "New Order of the Ages"
  • In God We Trust - This phrase actually first appeared on U.S. money between 1864 - 1873 on a two-cent coin. It reappeared in 1955 and has been on all U.S. money since 1963

In 2010, the U.S. Mint produced roughly 1,856,000,000 one dollar bills. If you have one-million of them, they would weigh, 2,040.8 pounds. Ask for 20s instead, as one million of them would only weigh 20.4 pounds. As well, you can make change for a one-dollar bill 293 ways.

Living Presidents are banned from having their faces on currency.

Pennies, you either love them or hate them. They were the first denomination of coins struck in the U.S. and they've been around a long time. They've been around since 1793 when they were 100% copper. President Lincoln made his appearance on the penny in 1909.

Modern pennies are made of a bit of copper with zinc and nickel. There were 4,938.54 million pennies produced in 2011. The current design of the penny still features President Lincoln on the front, but the reverse has gone through several revisions. It now shows a Union shield with 13 vertical stripes, a single horizontal bar across the top which represents the Union, and "E Pluribus Unum." There have been recurring attempts to stop production of the penny, but for now, it is still being produced.

By legislation created during the Revolutionary years of the U.S., no living person can be featured on a coin. It was to ensure that the U.S. would not appear like a monarchy, as living kings during the era were cast onto their countries coinage. There has been one exception to this rule, President Calvin Coolidge. His image was struck on a commemorative coin that celebrated the Sesquicentennial of American Independence. It was minted in 1926.

And then there are the questions that really throw you off.

Via Glassdoor's Interview Questions and Reviews section, we've compiled the tougher non-technical questions Apple has asked potential employees.

Some are brainteasers that make you prove that you're really the mathematical hotshot that you present on your resumé.

This Convertible Turned Into An Underwater 'Flying' Shark Cage For Shark Week

Discovery Channel's Shark Week might be bad news for seals, but it means great things for Beetles.

Last year, Volkswagen and Discovery transformed a Beetle into an underwater shark cage. Now the companies have partnered up again, and raised the stakes by turning the cage into a convertible.

"Calling it a shark cage is kind of tongue-in-cheek,"Luke Tipple, the shark wrangler and marine biologist in charge of driving the "car," told Business Insider. "It's pretty open."

But taking the top off isn't the only adjustment made on the car, which will take a subterranean road trip in Florida and the Bahamas surrounded by Caribbean reef, lemon, and tiger sharks.

"On top of creating a groundbreaking vehicle, this year we planned to make it fly," said Tipple, who is also an executive producer at What We Do Media. "We created a lift with ailerons in the front — it actually flies like a plane."

That means that rather than driving 15 feet underwater on the ocean floor, as it had last year, the VW flew through water that was 60 feet deep at 4 to 5 knots. It had three thrusters, instead of two, with 20 more pounds of torque per engine.

"If the vehicle fails, it will drop like a rock," said Tipple, who was behind the wheel. But he and VW execs weren't too worried.

"Well, we don't pile shark bait around him," VW advertising and marketing communications manager Justin Osborne told BI. "We aren't going to deal with a great white. We'd make the evening news ... not in a good way, though."

He said that when Discovery and VW first began its partnership last year, the company pitched various ideas for brand-integrated stunts. "A lot of them they threw out because it wasn't true to the science Discovery promotes."

The shark cage idea stuck.

"We were a little surprised — we didn't understand the popularity of Shark Week,"which now has a cult-like following, Osborne said. "People were starved for more content and behind the scene footage. They also wanted some more underwater scenes."

So now, through a highly planned social component, viewers can take a subterranean road trip with Tipple, seeing what he sees through 360-degree underwater cameras.

"For me, I'm a complete gadget and gear geek," Tipple said. "I love looking at the controls of things and seeing how they work."

The Shark Week obsessed can watch the shark cage explore actual underwater shipwrecks and follow shark highways where the sharks feed and mate.

"This relationship touches every aspect of Discovery and all the entities of Shark Week," Discovery SVP of ad sales Harold Morgenstern added. "It was very natural for us to repeat a champion combination."

Meet Luke Tipple. He's a shark wrangler, marine biologist, and the driver of Volkswagen's convertible Beetle shark cage.

Don't worry, Tipple has had a lot of shark experience. His company, What We Do Media, pairs him with brands all the time. He even cut himself shaving — surrounded by bloodthirsty sharks — for Gillette.
