Here's Proof That Prince George Is Already A Fashion Icon

prince william baby prince george blanket

The newborn Prince George is following in his mother's footsteps as a fashion icon.

When he was carried from the hospital to the waiting car by his dad Prince William, the world struggled to catch a glimpse of the little prince, who was bundled up in a cotton swaddle decorated with tiny birds.

And though the walk to the car lasted less than a minute, everyone had to know: Who was he wearing?

Style bloggers and fashion writers quickly identified the brand, and within four hours of George's appearance, the Brooklyn-based brand aden + anais's website had crashed. Within nine days, the company had 7,000 orders, a 600% increase according to The Associated Press.

Now, over 10,000 of the wraps have been sold, and the retailer's website visits have skyrocketed to nearly 2,000% more than its daily average in Britain, and 500% more in the U.S, according to the New York Daily News.

CEO of aden + anais Raegan Moya-Jones said she had no idea that her blanket was going to be Kate's choice for Prince George. In fact, she found out when a coworker brought her a picture.

“Not in a million years did I ever anticipate the future king of England was going to come out in an aden + anais swaddle,” Moya-Jones told the Daily News. “I was dismissive, because I really thought it was a joke.”

Kate reportedly bought the muslin blanket herself from a London store. It costs about $28 for a single blanket or $49.95 for a four-pack, and is sold at mid-range department stores like Nordstrom

The affordable brand is also big with celebrities like "Parks and Recreation" star Amy Poehler, and Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves.

Of course, the craze for all things Kate and baby is not likely to die down as the tot gets older. Eventually, tiny boots, coats, and hats will be fawned over on parent blogs with the same gusto that Kate's every fashion choice is followed by fashionistas.

It's the "Kate Effect," and it's not going anywhere.

Notre Dame New Shamrock Series Uniform

Notre Dame and Adidas have unveiled  the uniforms for the annual "Shamrock Series" game.

This year's contest will be played on October 5 against Arizona State at AT&T Stadium (née Cowboys Stadium).

The new uniforms are a huge improvement over last year's train wreck which featured a blue jersey and a two-tone helmet with an oversized leprechaun logo.

On the next few pages we'll take a closer look at the new uniforms.

While there are some look-at-me features, the white jersey matched with white pants gives the uniform a nice simple feel

Although green is not an official school color, it is occasionally worn by the sports teams and is heavily emphasized in these uniforms

Here is what the Shamrock Series uniform looked like last year

The Life And Awesomeness Of Jeff Bezos (AMZN)

bezosToday, Jeff Bezos shocked the world by acquiring the Washington Post for $250 million

It's just the latest twist from Bezos, one of the world's richest men thanks to his founding of ecommerce giant Amazon.

If you're unfamiliar with Bezos' story, we've put together an abridged version here.

Jeff was born in 1964 to 19-year-old year old Jackie Bezos and 20-year-old Mike Bezos, an adopted father.

Jeff didn't find out that his father is not his biological father until he was 10.  It didn't bother him much. Still doesn't.

"The reality, as far as I'm concerned, is that my Dad is my natural father. The only time I ever think about it, genuinely, is when a doctor asks me to fill out a form,"Jeff told Wired in 1999.

"It's a fine truth to have out there," he says. "I'm not embarrassed by it."

He spent his childhood summers at his grandparents' home in Texas, castrating cattle and doing other farmwork.

It wasn't all field work, though. Jeff's grandfather was huge role model in his life.

Lawrence Preston "Pop" Gise worked in the space industry and supervised 26,000 employees.

In a 2010 commencement speech, Jeff told the graduates that his grandfather taught him how "it's harder to be kind then clever."

When Jeff was 12, he was featured in a book called "Turning on Bright Minds: A Parent Looks at Gifted Education in Texas."

The book describes Bezos as "friendly but serious" and "not particularly gifted in leadership."

10 Iconic Train Trips

$

Orient Express

One of the best ways to experience the travel style of yesteryear's rich and famous is to spend some time on a luxury train.

Typically, these trains provide private two-person overnight compartments, some with built-in showers, along with lavish service, onboard guides, and elaborate meals.

Many also include a variety of day tours at stops along the way. Most carry passengers in vintage cars from the 1920s to 1950s that have been refurbished to modern standards or in newer cars designed to look like the classics.

Luxury trains are extremely expensive, so if you're more interested in the scenery and stops along the way than the extravagance, you can replicate many luxury rail journeys using ordinary modern trains at a fraction of the cost. I've included tips for this as well.

The Simplon-Orient-Express

The Orient-Express has to be the all-time winner for name recognition among iconic trains. The Simplon-Orient-Express excursion train still makes the traditional run from Paris to Istanbul via Budapest and Bucharest once per year (local rail conditions permitting), lacking only the original's onboard murder and intrigue.

But most trips are shorter two- to four-day links on various routes connecting London, Venice, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, and Bucharest. The train uses original vintage coaches that have been upgraded to operate on modern railroads and are hauled by modern and usually electric locomotives. Prices run between $1,000 and $1,400 per person, per day, and are all-inclusive. The Simplon-Orient-Express folks operate vintage trains over several other European routes at comparable rates.

The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express

The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express serves the world's longest continuous railway line. This luxury train operates 15-day itineraries in modern cars, linking Moscow with Vladivostok. The train provides three classes of service, and all three include in-cabin showers, meal service, drinks, excursions, services of onboard tour guides, and porterage. There's even an onboard doctor included in the base prices.

But prices are stiff, starting at more than $15,000 per person for double occupancy in Silver Class. Golden Eagle also operates a Silk Road train linking Moscow with Beijing via Bukhara, Samarkand, and Almaty. If that's too stiff, you can do the regular straight-through seven-day Trans-Siberian Express over the same route through Real Russia. A first-class berth costs about $2,000 per person for single or double occupancy, including meals.

The Blue Train

South Africa's Blue Train is yet another storied luxury train. All accommodations are in private two-person compartments with built-in showers and toilet facilities. The trip cost includes meals, drinks, and a high level of personal service. The Blue Train runs between Cape Town and Pretoria; in either direction, you leave early in the morning and arrive at around noon the next day. Trips run four to five times a month.

Costs for a deluxe suite start at 15,155 rand (about $1,500, according to xe.com) per person for double occupancy in the high season (September 1–November 15) or 12,380 rand (about $1,260) during low season. A few luxury suites include bathtubs rather than showers, and these are more expensive. The Blue Train operates on other South African routes as well. If you just want the Cape Town-Johannesburg train trip, you can ride a sleeper on the bare-bones Shosholoza Meyl tourist train, with prices starting at around 600 rand (about $60), or take the Premier Classe deluxe train, with prices starting at around 2,500 rand (about $250), including meals. Arrange both through African Sun Travel.

Redditor Proposes To His Girlfriend Using Memes In The Ultimate Reddit Post

Redditor SirTechnocracy and his girlfriend LadyTechnocracy already knew they were going to get engaged.

They had picked out and designed an engagement ring together, and he had even asked her parents for permission, according to The Daily Dot.

All he needed was an unforgettable way to propose — and that's where Reddit stepped in to help.

Using well-known memes like "Good Guy Greg,""Success Kid," and Dos Equis's "Most Interesting Man in the World," SirTechnocracy told his girlfriend exactly how she makes him feel:

Then he linked to an Imgur album of 18 pictures on deviantART of he and his girlfriend he had specially commissioned for the occasion:

Posted on /r/AdviceAnimals, the post title read, "This is a marriage proposal (she will recognize my username): I can't believe the day is finally here."

Two hours after the post went up, his girlfriend accepted: "She just ran up and hugged me almost in tears for like a minute (which seemed like forever),"he commented in his own post. "Then I had to remind her that she was supposed to say yes or no."

For her part, LadyTechnocracy knew exactly how to tell Reddit that she had accepted his proposal:

reddit proposal

"Understandably, a lot of people are giving SirTechnocracy grief about this. I understand that the concept of a Reddit proposal is... unconventional (hell, I'd never think of it), but this is honestly the most romantic thing someone has ever done for me. The advice animals crack me up, and the commissions are amazing,"she wrote.

The Moscow Metro System Is Just Incredible

moscow metro

If you want to provide public transportation to a booming city of 12 million people, you better have quite a metro for them.

Boasting 188 station stops and covering 195 miles of track, Moskcovsky metropliten, Moscow's metro system, is more than up to the task. On an average day, the system sees 7 million people get from place to place.

But just as noteworthy as its function is its fashion. The stations are simply beautiful, put together with careful design and planning to make them comfortable and attractive.

Don't be fooled by the ornate styling, though. Many stations were constructed to double as shelters for air raids or nuclear events. They're deep below the ground and they're built to last.

We wanted to take a look for ourselves and see what it's like to get around Moscow by subway.

To give you an idea of what we're dealing with, here's a map of the complete system.

Follow the red M's around Moscow to find the metro stops.

Hollywood's 10 Biggest Political Donors

J.J. Abrams Katie McGrath

The next big national elections may not be for another year, but Hollywood types aren't sitting on their wallets until then -- Jeffrey Katzenberg, J.J. Abrams, Alan Horn, Tom Rothman and James L. Brooks are among those already donating big bucks to political organizations and candidates of their choice.

The Top 20 showbiz donors have already shelled out an estimated $1.45 million collectively this year, according to an analysis provided to TheWrap from the Center for Responsive Politics.

Florida music producer Bill Edwards and his wife Joanne led the list with $164,800 donated to Republicans, according to the latest figures for the year. But most of the Hollywood money has gone to Democrats.

See which celebs have donated to which politicians >

Jeffrey Katzenberg and his wife Marilyn, the second largest givers, have forked over $137,600 to Democratic campaigns and committees -- including $100,000 to the Senate Majority Political Action Committee, which seeks to elect Democrats to the U.S. Senate.

"Star Trek" and "Star Wars" director Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, have given $117,200 -- the third largest -- all to Democrats.

Their contributions include $32,400 to the Democratic National Committee; $10,200 to Minnesota Sen. Al Franken’s re-election effort; $5,000 for Newark Mayor Corey Booker’s race for the U.S. Senate; and $5,000 for Alaskan Sen. Mark Begich’s re-election campaign.

Walt Disney Studios Chairman Horn and his wife Cindy, former Fox exec Rothman and his wife Jessica, and producer-director Brooks, all also gave money to Democrats.

Republicans are getting some entertainment money, too -- but from media execs outside Hollywood. Hubbard Broadcasting CEO Stanley Hubbard and his wife Karen, the fourth largest givers, have given $110,800 overall with all but $10,400 donated to Republicans.

top showbiz donors political party

The rankings are based on the latest Federal Election Commission data, which can run several months behind, according to Douglas H. Weber, senior researcher for the center. June and July contributions, when finally incorporated, could affect the rankings.

Democrats have actively courted Hollywood givers this year, with two fundraisers featuring President Obama among the most high-profile outreach activities. In May, Harvey Weinstein hosted a New York fundraiser while Chernin Group CEO Peter Chernin hosted his Santa Monica fundraiser in June.

Neither Chernin nor Weinstein yet show up as contributors in FEC data.

The Democratic National Committee reported it drew contributions in May and June of $32,400 each from Susan St. James, TV producer Jonathan Littman, Uma Thurman, Jamie Alter (the wife of Sony CEO Michael Lynton), Disney CEO Robert Iger and HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said its contributions in June included $32,400 from producer Marcy Carsey and $64,800 from Act 4 Entertainment’s David and Susan Johnson.

The top 20 showbiz contributors includes not only Hollywood producers and execs, but cable and satellite execs. It also includes a Broadway producer, a top entertainment lawyer and several broadcast TV execs.

10. Chairman of a major broadcasting company, Joseph Field and his wife Marie have given hundreds of thousands to Democratic candidates and groups.

Besides serving as board chairman of big radio broadcaster Entercom Communications, Joseph Field and his wife Marie are major contributors to Democratic candidates and groups.

In the 2012 election cycle, their more than $520,000 in contributions included nearly $200,000 to Priorities USA Action and nearly $104,000 to the Democratic National Committee. This year each gave $32,400 to the Democratic National Committee.

9. TriStar exec Tom Rothman and wife Jessica give big to Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Former Fox executive Tom Rothman and his wife gave $111,000 last cycle to Democrats and they are giving again this time.

The contributions so far include $32,400 contributions from Tom Rothman to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic National Committee.

8. Broadcasting big-shot Albert J. Kaneb didn't disappoint with his hefty donation to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Barnstable Broadcasting CEO Albert J. Kaneb has consistently given to Democrats, including $116,000 in the last election cycle.

This year Kaneb's contributions include $32,400 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

How The 60-Foot-Long Ancient Shark, Megalodon, Ripped Apart Giant Whales

Screen Shot Sharkzilla

Discovery Channel kicked off Shark Week on Sunday with a fake documentary about the Great White shark's prehistoric ancestor, megalodon.

Megalodons did at exist at one point. But the powerful ocean predator went extinct 2 million years ago.

The "documentary"— with fictional scripts and phony research — asks us to consider the possibility that megalodon is still roaming the oceans and toppling fishing boats. It upset many Discovery Channel viewers who were briefly convinced that megalodon is terrorizing humans today.

The ancient shark is long gone; however, the 50-ton beast could do some serious damage when it ruled the prehistoric seas.

Last year, the Shark Week team built a full-size model of megalodon, to see if it could hunt and kill giant whales.

You can see video on the Shark Week website.

At more than 60 feet long, megalodon — (literally "big tooth") — was the top predator in the ocean up until they went extinct two million years ago.

They were much larger than Tyrannosaurus rex. Megalodons weighed up to 100 tons, while T-rex weighed a puny 9 tons.

In fact, a T-rex would have been a quick snack for megalodon. Its head would have easily fit inside the gargantuan shark's mouth.

The Most Hardcore Fans In Major League Baseball

$

Detroit Tigers Fans

Baseball teams gain strong allegiances from their hometown fans. But some teams' fans are just more hardcore than the rest.

Ticketcity.com, a site that allows people to buy and sell tickets to sports and music events, created an exclusive list of the most devoted Major League Baseball fans.

They used several key factors to calculate the most devoted fans, including average total attendance, average home attendance, average home game ticket price, percent capacity for home games, Facebook likes, and Twitter followers. This generated a score for each team between one and 100.

Not surprisingly, the San Francisco Giants, last year's World Series winner, came out on top. And major markets like New York and L.A. also dominate the standings.

#13 Atlanta Braves

Overall score:  74.77

Average home attendance: 32,778 (65.9% full)

Average ticket price: $26

Cruising atop the NL East standings, Braves fans rank with their peers in St. Louis for knowledge and appreciation for the game. The team is very well loved on social media, with 1,337,893 Facebook likes and almost 372,000 Twitter followers.

Stacked with young talent, the Braves are one of the game's top contenders.

#12 Colorado Rockies

Overall score: 74.97

Average home attendance: 34,896 (69.1% full)

Average ticket price: $26

The Rockies have fallen out of contention, but they still have two of baseball's best players in outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. The home at Coors Field is one of the more fan-friendly parks in baseball.

#11 Cincinnati Reds

Overall score: 75.12

Average home attendance: 31,777 (75.1% full)

Average ticket price: $25

Without the national fanfare of other contenders, the Reds are one of the most well-built teams in baseball. Behind the force of homegrown talent like Jay Bruce and Joey Votto, the Reds look like a lock for at least a Wild Card birth.

There are 16 business class seats on board.

All of them lie flat and offer a massage function.

13 Devices College Students Actually Need

$
0
0

kids laughing in the park college jeans friends

Things have changed since I went to high school and college. Back in the day—and I’m aging myself here—students basically needed only a Trapper Keeper, a ruler and a calculator.

Today, everything is high-tech—and that goes for both high school and college kids. Here are the latest and greatest devices that will make school a breeze.

E-reader:

Textbooks are notoriously heavy, and if your kid is carrying a load of them from class to class, he’s likely to get a backache.

Amazon’s popular e-ink reader, the Kindle ($69 for the Wi-Fi version from Amazon), is affordable, plus Amazon has a Kindle Textbook Rental program that allows him access to his annotations even after the rental expires. (Get up to 40% off electronics at Amazon.)

Tablet:

A tablet is useful for studying, browsing the Web and reading (as with the Kindle, students can read books or magazines on a tablet and download the free Kindle app if they’re not using Amazon’s tablet, the Kindle Fire).

And it goes without saying that your child can also stream TV shows and movies on the device. Choose from one of the three smallest and most affordable tablets: the Kindle Fire ($159 at Amazon), iPad Mini (starting at $329 at Apple) or Nexus 7 (starting at $199 at Google Play). (Through September 6, students can get a $50 gift card on any iPad purchase at Apple.)

Laptop:

If your kid is in college or high school, she is going to need something to type all those term papers on. A basic laptop doesn’t have to be really heavy or expensive. The Netbook is basically dead, but that doesn’t mean your wallet needs to be empty.

CNET recommends the Acer Aspire M5-481PT ($635 at Overstock.com) and the Samsung Chromebook ($249 at Google Play). The former is a full-fledged laptop with a Windows 8 operating system replete with a touchscreen. The latter is a stripped-down Chromebook with no hard drive (all data is created and saved on Google’s cloud).

This might work if your child only needs to surf the Web, write on Google Docs and send emails, but the Chromebook won’t work for someone needing more extensive photo-editing or video-editing software. (Enjoy free shipping on orders over $50 at Overstock.com.)

And while there are dozens of great off-the-beaten-path properties out there, these 10 offer their own special kind of seclusion in great destinations from the Americas to Africa.

Secluded in the Mountains: Explora Patagonia

Chile

It takes at least two flights and a long drive from the tiny coastal hamlet of Punta Arenas, Chile, to get here—but it’s so worth it. Located in magnificent Torres del Paine National Park and blessed with one of the most heart-stopping views imaginable, 49-room Explora Patagonia is the ultimate base from which to hike amid surreal blue lakes and hypnotizing glaciers as fuzzy guanaco graze around you and graceful condors glide up above (from $2,820 per person for four nights, all-inclusive).

Secluded in the Caribbean: Petit St. Vincent

The Grenadines

There are several private-island resorts in the Caribbean, but there’s something about the layout and ambiance of 115-acre Petit St. Vincent that makes it seem extra secluded. Located far south in the laidback Grenadines, this 22-cottage resort takes unplugging (no phones or TVs) as seriously as it does romance. Renovated in 2011 with serene white-and-blue decor, the resort lets guests choose their bliss—beachside or hilltop—and raise a flag when they want to be left alone (from $1,100/night, including meals).

Secluded in the Rainforest: Belcampo Lodge Belize

Belize

Located outside Punta Gorda, Belize, far from the sun-seekers and snorkelers on Ambergris Cay, 12-suite Belcampo Lodge Belizebeckons with an authentic agritourism mantra (many of its thousands of acres are dedicated to an organic farm, a cacao and coffee orchard, and livestock barn) that delivers delicious farm-to-fork cuisine, chocolate and coffee courses, excellent bird watching, a yoga pavilion, and assorted activities from caving to diving. Best of all: the howler monkey alarm clocks and birdsong lullabies (from $300/night).

emirates a319 private jet plane

Airlines always configure the jets they order from plane makers to fit their specific needs, but Emirates has gone to another level with an Airbus A319.

It is using the narrowbody jet to launch a luxury private jet service for clients who want to go "beyond first class."

That means flying around the world in a jet that typically holds 124 passengers, but is customized to fit only 19.

According to Emirates, the aircraft can be booked at short notice, and comes with a chauffeur-driven car service, along with flight crew and ground staff. The plane is outfitted with 10 private suites, a lounge and dining area, and a shower spa for everyone on board.

The airline would not reveal exact pricing for the service, but said it is "competitive."

It's safe to say that for this level of service, "competitive" can be interpreted as "very expensive."

Here's the A319 from the outside.

The 111-foot long jetliner typically seats 124 passengers. The world's largest purpose-built private jet, the Gulfstream G650, is 99 feet long.

This is what economy class usually looks like.

soup dumplingsSome people travel for adventure. Others hit the road for romance, work, or just to escape the grind of everyday life. More and more, however, travelers are planning their trips around food.

Culinary tourism is one of the best ways to dig in and experience a foreign culture. From learning to cook dumplings in Shanghai, to tapas tours of Madrid, focusing on food allows travelers to connect with locals, try new flavors and expand their cooking repertoire.

Here are 10 foodie-centric tours from around the world that are sure to tantalize your taste-buds:

1. Flee The Resort In Mexico

Mexico is a tourist mecca, but the food in most resorts, such as in Cancun or Cozumel, is far from the fresh local cuisine foodies know and love. So, be adventurous and leave the confines of your all-inclusive resort for a food tour of San Miguel.

Sip horchatas while nibbling on ceviche tostadas (made from fish straight off the boat) and other Yucatan delicacies. Gobble up mole enchiladas, fresh coconut, crispy tacos, savory soups, regional sweets, and more while you try out your Spanish skills on local artisans.

2. Hit The Street In Vancouver

Sure, Vancouver has a thriving restaurant scene that is not to be missed. But some of the city’s most exciting and innovative cuisine is located right on its streets. Hop from small carts to food trucks on a tour of Vancouver’s street food.

We’re talking Berkshire pork hot dogs at Japadog, a Japanese fusion hot dog cart, and butter chicken naan kebabs from the Top Chef approved Soho Road Naan Keba cart. Move on to a hot smoked wild salmon sandwich from Kaboombox, possibly the world’s only salmon-smoking food truck,  and then switch gears and head over to visit the Roaming Dragon, British Columbia's first mobile gourmet food truck, and sample their acclaimed rice balls.

3. Goa Cooking Course

Goa is known for its gorgeous beaches and wild parties, but it’s also a haven for foodies. The cuisine combines Indian food with Portuguese influences (they had a settlement here in the Colonial period). Get acquainted with the area’s history and learn some new skills with a 3-day cooking course at the boutique Siolim House hotel, a palacio built in 1675 during the Portuguese occupation.

From tradition Hindu vegetarian cuisine (try their staple kokum fruit), to fresh fish curries and Catholic dishes like arroz doce and their world famous vindaloo (did you know the name comes from the Portuguese?), you’ll be immersed in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Indian delicacies.
