Leaked Images Of Proposed Manhattan Soccer Stadium Are Amazing, But Will It Ever Happen?

Manhattan Soccer Stadium Proposal

New York City F.C. is still looking for a stadium to call home when they begin play in 2015 and renderings have leaked on Reddit that show one proposal for the west side of Manhattan (via SportsGrid.com).

Negotiations to build a stadium in Queens for the MLS expansion franchise recently fell apart. Now the team that is owned by the New York Yankees and Manchester City F.C. is exploring new sites "all over the city."

That has some hoping that Pier 40 on the west side of Manhattan is once again a possibility. MLS originally considered the Pier 40 site before focusing on Queens, and MLS has confirmed that the leaked renderings are real.

It will probably never happen. But it is fun to imagine what professional soccer in Manhattan might look like.

The proposal shows a partially covered stadium

And here is the stunning view of what the stadium would look like from the inside looking south towards the World Trade Center

The site would still have what appears to be youth soccer fields, but that means the pier would need to be enlarged by a considerable amount

13 Reasons Why Everyone Is Obsessed With 'Breaking Bad'

gus jesse breaking bad

The final eight episodes of "Breaking Bad" begin airing this Sunday on AMC.

After nearly a year-long hiatus, meth kingpin Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and partner in crime Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) return for what should be a dramatic series end.

Since we last saw the two on screen, the show has spiked in popularity.

Not only has the series been available for binge viewers on Netflix, but everyone seems obsessed with it.

Celebrities from Seth Meyers to billionaire Warren Buffett have declared themselves huge fans of the hit AMC series.

The media went crazy when Cranston walked around this year's San Diego Comic-Con dressed as his "Breaking Bad" character

"The Simpsons" even did a tribute to the show.

If you're not on board with the frenzy, you may wonder why America is so enthralled with two meth cooks.

Fans who have tried explaining the series to a non-viewer have probably had a difficult time relaying the show's bizarre premise in a single sentence.

After re-watching all five seasons, we've compiled a list of what makes creator Vince Gilligan's show one of the best on television.

The concept of the show sounds ridiculous, but it's brilliant.

Imagine your high-school chemistry teacher.

Now, imagine that same person — who probably leads a somewhat normal life — cooking meth for money after being diagnosed with inoperable cancer.

After his 50th birthday, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) "breaks bad," joining up with former student and drug dealer Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) to cook and distribute methamphetamine to provide for his family well after he's gone (and later to support his medical expenses).

You watch the show's main character slowly change from the protagonist to the antagonist.

We can't think of another television series that introduces a sympathetic main character who slowly becomes diabolical, greedy, self-centered, and cruel.

That's what happens with Walt as we watch the drug business turn a timid, stumbling chemistry teacher into an overly confident, malevolent kingpin — aka Heisenberg — who wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet through someone's head. Even as Walt becomes increasingly violent, however, because of the viewer's attachment with the chem teacher from the start, it's easier to sympathize with him as opposed to other characters, like Walt's wife Skyler and his DEA brother-in-law Hank Schrader who continuously try to bring him down.

If Walt's character was introduced as a villain from the start, it may have been more difficult for viewers to turn a blind eye, or back up many of his actions.

The tumultuous relationship between Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul's characters.

Walt and Jesse have a love-hate relationship as the older teacher easily and often gets agitated and frustrated with the younger, inexperienced chemistry flunk.

As the series progresses, the viewers see the two develop a sort of father-son bond, with Walt becoming much closer to Jesse than his actual son, Walt Jr. (He once accidentally refers to his own son accidentally as Jesse.) Jesse becomes very protective of his former teacher when others threaten his life.

The chemistry translates off screen as well.

Anytime these two head out in public together, the pair always deliver a series of must-see photos.

Also, if you've watched the gag reels for "Breaking Bad," it's easy to see just how well the two get along. Paul has said that Cranston is a giant prankster on set.

A Brief History Of Clowns, And Why They're So Darn Scary

sad clown

Does anyone really like clowns?

Though Coulrophobia— or an extreme fear of clowns — is highly-disputed in the academic realm, many people would admit that clowns totally freak them out.

With National Clown Week this week, Smithsonian writer Linda Rodriguez McRobbie wrote a fantastic piece on "The History and Psychology of Clowns Being Scary."

Turns out, clowns have long been associated with a dark and disturbing history — murder, financial ruin, infidelity, and pedophilia have all stained the clowning profession.

The entire piece is worth reading, but here are the nine historical events that have contributed the most to a negative perception of clowns.

The earliest documented clowns date all the way back to 2400 BCE in ancient Egypt. Clowns appeared in ancient Greek and Roman societies, eventually evolving into court jesters in the late Middle Ages. These professionals would openly mock sex, food, drink, and the monarchy, all the while behaving maniacally for a laugh.

Source: Smithsonian Magazine

London entertainer Joseph Grimaldi was said to have invented the modern clown in the early 1800s. Grimaldi performed physical comedy while wearing white face paint with red patches on his cheeks and bizarre colorful costumes. He was known for being extremely depressed outside his routine: His first wife died during childbirth, his father was tyrannical, and his son became an alcoholic clown who drank himself to death at age 31.

Source: Smithsonian Magazine

Around the same time in France, everyone was laughing at Jean-Gaspard Deburau's Pierrot, a clown character with a white face, black eyebrows and red lips — one of the first professional silent mimes. He was universally beloved in France, but in 1836 Deburau killed a boy with a blow from his cane after the boy taunted him. Though he was ultimately acquitted, the image of a killer clown stuck in the public conscious.

9 Offbeat Economic Indicators Loved By Econ-Hipsters

$

hipster measurementThis past weekend, we learned that Fonterra is in serious trouble after they announced  they'd shipped contaminated products to Asia.

Many people learned this week that Fonterra is the world's biggest dairy exporter.

We recently featured Fonterra's dairy index, which tracks the milk and milk product trade, on our list of "hipster indicators" since it functions as an offbeat but representative indicator of worldwide economic activity.

With everyone talking about both Fonterra and the global economy these days, we revisit the list today.

Within its inherent funkiness, we believe, lie data that can shed light on lingering macroeconomic questions. How fast is Asia falling? How fast is the U.S. rising?

Lear Jet Revenue

What is it: Quarterly revenue for private plane manufacturer Lear Corp.

What makes it hipster: Unlike data on manufacturing of other transport goods, private plane sales capture how comfortable mega-firms are feeling — and the lengths to which they're telling their competitors that they can live like kings.

South Korean Exports

What is it: Monthly trade data from South Korea.

What makes it hipster: Economists call this indicator the "global canary in the coal mine" as it is the first major economic report to come out on the first of the month. South Korea's exports are heavily tied to China, Japan, and Europe.

US Truck Tonnage

What is it: Monthly measure of  truck tonnage from the American Trucking Association.

What makes it hipster: Trucks remain the principal method for transporting most consumer goods. Over 80% of all commercial shipping is done on trucks. So, if stuff is flying off the shelves, this number can help let us know.

Instagram is becoming the go-to platform for sharing photos of anything and everything.

But there seems to be a growing number of young — sometimes very young — people on Instagram reaching moderate to somewhat extreme levels of fame.

So while you may think you're super cool on Instagram with your 500 followers, you may want to rethink that.

That's because the hippest people on Instagram, other than actual celebrities, seem to be young kids and teenagers. We found a 5-year old with 40,000 followers, for instance.

5-year-old Alonso Mateo is becoming a fashion sensation, thanks to his stylist mom. The little guy has more than 40,000 followers.

15-year-old Brent Rivera has 558,705 followers on Instagram. Most of his pictures are selfies, and the teen girls seem to love him.

14-year-old Alli Simpson hails from Australia, but recently moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

13 Tech CEOs And Founders Reveal Their Favorite Productivity Hacks To Help You Get More Done

Becoming more productive is something that everyone wants to achieve.

It's a difficult task though, because thinking about becoming more productive and actually setting things in motion are two different things.

In an excellent post on Quora, a bunch of CEOs, tech entrepreneurs, and startup pros share their favorite hacks for getting things done more efficiently.

There were a ton of great responses and we sifted through some of the important ones to put together this collection of productivity hacks in hopes that they will help inspire and supercharge your own personal productivity.

Dustin Moskovitz, the co-founder and CEO of Asana and former co-founder of Facebook holds, "No Meeting Wednesday's."

Moskovitz says that, "No Meeting Wednesdays" is something he borrowed from Facebook. "With very few exceptions, everyone's calendar is completely clear at least one day out of the week whether you are a maker or manager." He goes on to explain, "this is an invaluable tool for ensuring you have some contiguous space to do project work. For me personally, it is often the one day each week I get to code."

He explains further in a internal document you can read the full post here.

Bharath Kumar a co-founder at Pugmarks.me suggests working on a Sunday late night.

Kumar believes that by the time Sunday has arrived your weekend is over, but during that free time a lot of thoughts have been collected.

Here's his full rationale for working on a Sunday night:

  • The family is asleep. They think the weekend is over. Monday morning is yet to come.
  • Work through Sunday night, or at least till 3AM. You get at least 4 hours of extremely productive, thoughtful, non-interrupted time with no expectations.
  • When you get work done on a Sunday night, your Monday is awesome. You meet colleagues with confidence, and can do meetings to plan the next week - all armed by a productive night.

Matt DeCelles, a serial entrepreneur and tech advisor, offers four tips he uses for hacking his productivity, starting with prioritization.

  1. Prioritize the most important task you need to get done.
  2. DeCelles uses www.trello.com to map out all the tasks for his company. He says that it, "gives a macro view of what's going on and allows you to delegate tasks that may be better completed by another person."
  3. Delegate (like a boss): He explains, "when you enjoy what you do you will find yourself being much more productive. If you really suck at doing something, chances are there is someone out there that can probably do it for less than $5/hr. Check out Fiverr.com"
  4. [I] use a whiteboard to list all of the tasks that are mine to accomplish. After looking at Trello and delegating out tasks, I put mine on a white board. Usually this is 10-15 tasks.

Apple iPhone 5C 24 1024x682

We've seen a couple of photos recently of what appears to be Apple's "cheap" iPhone 5C.

The smartphone is rumored to be made from cheaper materials like plastic instead of the usual glass and aluminum.

Blogger and "leak expert" Sonny Dickson got his hands on some high-quality shots of what very well could be Apple's iPhone 5C.

These photos follow the recent leaks we've seen and are the best we've seen so far. They give us a good idea of what we may see from Apple in just a few short weeks.

The back case of the 5C is rumored to be made from plastic.

All previous versions of the iPhone were made from metal and glass.

This new design allows Apple to cut costs and charge a cheaper price.

The Best Football Fans In America

TicketCity.com created an exclusive list of the most engaged fan bases in the NFL.

Using attendance (home and away), ticket prices (home and average), and some social media numbers, they ranked the most hardcore fan bases in the league. They then generated a score for each team between one and 100.

Most of the teams on this list were good in 2012. But some (America's Team!) endure no matter how bad they are.

#13 Washington Redskins

Overall score: 70.76

Average home attendance: 79,654 (86.9% full)

Average ticket price: $136

Washington may have one of the largest stadiums in the league, but they managed to fill it more often than not last year, especially once Robert Griffin III got going in the second half of the year.

#12 San Francisco 49ers

Overall score: 71.63

Average home attendance: 69,732 (99.3% full)

Average ticket price: $138

San Francisco is moving into a fancy new stadium soon, which will be sure to push them even higher. But even with an old, non-football specific stadium, they drew incredible crowds.

It also helped that they made a run to the Super Bowl.

#11 Baltimore Ravens

Overall score: 73.34

Average home attendance: 71,278 (100.4% full)

Average ticket price: $162

The Ravens were always on the fringes of contention, but last year they managed to break through and win the Super Bowl. That should create even more interest for this year and vault them up the rankings.

Andrea Casiraghi (L) and his girlfriend Tatiana Santodomingo

It's a fashion royalty-meets-real royalty fairytale: Monaco's Andrea Casirgahi is marrying Colombian heiress and fashion designer Tatiana Santo Domingo on August 31, according to People Magazine.

29-year-old Andrea, grandson of the late actress Grace Kelly, is second in line to the Monegasque throne after his uncle Prince Albert II. His 29-year-old bride-to-be Tatiana is a descendant of the wealthy Colombian Santo Domingo family.

According to a spokesperson for Monaco's Pink Palace, the wedding will be a private affair, but it's also bound to be ritzy. New York Magazine points out that in 2008, Tatiana's relative Andrés married Lauren Santo Domingo and Vogue deemed it "the wedding of the year."

The couple have dated for seven years and have a son, Sacha, who was born back in March.

They were introduced by Andrea's royal sister Charlotte, herself a fashion icon and third in line to the Monaco throne. She is a good friend of Tatiana, and the two were schoolmates at Paris's elite boarding school Lycée Fontainebleau as children, according to People.

Andrea and Tatiana are frequently seen out together at social events in Monaco, including the Rose Ball, Red Cross Ball, and Monaco Grand Prix. She was also his date to Prince Albert and Charlene Wittstock's wedding in 2011.

Go Inside The Factory Where Robots Build The Tesla Model S

Tesla Model S is paintedA few months after Tessa Motors turned its first profit, analysts are expecting the electric car company to post a big loss in its Q2 earnings.

One key to Tesla's business is making and selling enough cars to keep itself in business.

In July, CEO Elon Musk said Model S production rate is ahead of schedule, and the company is now rolling out more than 400 new cars each week.

To see how it's hitting that rate, Wired went behind the scenes at Tesla's factory in Fremont, Calif., where it takes three to five days to build a Model S, according to VP of Manufacturing Gilbert Passin.

The process is smooth, efficient, and packed with robots.

You can watch the Wired video here, or click through to see how it's done.

To create a Model S, Tesla starts out with 50 to 60 coils of various types of aluminum, with each coil weighing up to 20,000 pounds.

The coils are unwound and the aluminum is flattened, then fed into a blanking machine.

The blanking machine processes the pieces and cuts them into flat, even pieces. Sometimes a laser is also used to cut the blanks, as seen here.

Amazon Is Selling This $1.45 Million Monet In Its New 'Fine Art' Section, And The Reviews Are Hilarious

$
0

Amazon's new Fine Art and Collectibles section just launched yesterday, and it is already getting less-than-stellar reviews.

One of the most vocal opponents is economist Tyler Cowen, who says that much of the art is low quality and overpriced. "It looks like dealers trying to unload unwanted, hard to sell inventory at sucker prices," he wrote on Marginal Revolution.

Most of the items by famous painters — including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Joan Míro — are lithographs, mady by a delicate printing process that uses oil and water on an aluminum plate to make copies. Since there are multiple renditions available, these are usually much less expensive than a typical painting.

But there are a few original paintings for sale. The most expensive is a Norman Rockwell for $4.85 million. There's also a Claude Monet painting titled "L'Enfant a la tasse, a portrait de Jean Monet" from 1868 available for $1.45 million.

The Monet is getting particular attention from Amazon reviewers who find the new section — and its prices — absolutely ridiculous.

Below are some of the best comments about the painting.

monet painting amazon fine art jean monet

"USED? PAINTING HAS CRACKS!"
"For as much as I paid I'm a little upset that this isn't a new painting. You can see OBVIOUS cracks and I'm worried that the artwork has had several owners before me. I might return to Amazon if I can't get in touch with the seller. 1 out of 5 stars."

"stupid"
"BUYER BEWARE: THIS ITEM IS IN FRENCH. There is no English version. I purchased this product and couldn't understand a word of it."

"The meme has no caption!"
"Pros: Delivered as promised, packed well.

Cons: Stupid picture of some kid, and it's old. And the kid that painted it left their signature right on the painting where everyone can see it; ego much?"

Overall: This was a waste of money, I'll never buy any memes by this Jean woman ever again."

"Eww, as if"
"My friend Dionne advised me against buying a Monet, and I should have listened. From far away, it's okay, but up close it's a big old mess."

"THIS IS THE REAL THING, BEWARE OF "MANET" RIP-OFFS!"
"I've been a fan of Monet since the early days and this is a serviceable example of his mid-period stuff, not too fancy but gets the job done and gives an idea of what he's like for people who aren't ready to make up their minds about Waterlilies or Impression, Sunrise. But I really wrote this review to warn casual searchers that some bunch of opportunists are trying to rip off the unwary or inexperienced browser by flooding Amazon with their cheap replicas, under the confusingly similar name "Manet". Remember, it's "Monet", with the "o" that is the real thing. Apparently it's permitted by the Terms of Conditions for people to sell "Manet" product, as long as (when pushed!) they admit somewhere in the fine print that their "Manet" paintings aren't genuine Monets. Seems as unethical as hell to me, but I guess all we fans can do is warn the gullible."

"Amateur Hour"
"I was seriously considering purchasing this item, but I can't get beyond my suspicion that the artist doesn't know how to draw hands. The clumsy attempt to hide them behind a misshapen bowl just screams AMATEUR."

Amazon also has a helpful "In Room" feature in the new section that shows what the art would look like in your (minimally-decorated) home:

A Los Angeles Restaurant Has A 45-Page Menu Dedicated To Bottled Water

This week’s edition of “S*** That Could Only Happen in Los Angeles, Like Seriously” is brought to you by LA-based eatery Ray’s & Stark Bar, which will make history next week by unveiling a brand-new, 45-page menu featuring...water.

Just water. Different bottled waters, to be fair, including water from ten different countries and carrying a variety of price tags. But still, water. The same stuff that you can get at your neighborhood Starbucks or McDonald’s for exactly $0. Welcome to Los Angeles.

Ray’s & Stark Bar’s bottled water selection is billed as the city’s “most extensive water menu” and features everything from the super luxe Berg, (harvested from glaciers in Western Greenland, retails for $20 a bottle) to the more commonplace Evian (filtered through sand and gravel in the French Alps, $8 a bottle).

The menu also features bottles of “9OH2O” water created by Ray’s & Stark’s GM Martin Riese and described as “the champagne of waters” by Riese’s restaurant, of course.

It’s true that there’s probably a taste difference between the water gushing from a Chevron bathroom sink and the glass-bottled selection that Ray’s & Stark is offering. We’re just not really sure that taste difference is worth a $20 price tag. But hey, what’s Los Angeles without a group of aficionados loudly declaring their preference for volcanically filtered groundwater over the freshwater spring alternatives?

Peep the menu in its bougie entirety at Ray’s and Stark Bar Water Menu.

The Most Outrageous Yacht Charters In The World

$

Maltese Falcon

When Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's mega-yacht Eclipse docked in midtown Manhattan last February, it created frenzy among the Big Apple's princes and paupers alike.

See the yachts >

They flocked to the far west pier, usually reserved for cruise ships, just to get a glimpse of the 538-foot palace at sea.

At the time, Eclipse was the largest yacht in the world (and it's still the largest available for charter), with 18 luxury cabins for up to 34 guests, two pools, a three-man submarine and three helipads facilitating quick transfers to the mainland. It reportedly cost north of $500 million to build and another $500,000 a week just to keep afloat, making a day at sea in this mega-yacht a mega-fantasy for nearly everybody on the planet.

But a jaunt through the Mediterranean on Eclipse with 33 of your closest friends isn't completely out of reach. Back in 2011 Abramovich made the ship available for charter through the über-exclusive brokers of Super Yachts Monaco for a reported $2 million per week.

If that seems a bit steep, Abramovich's mega-yacht Luna is also available for charter through Super Yachts Monaco for a slightly smaller per-week fee. Consider yourself warned, though—this yacht has only one on-deck pool.

If you have the means and are looking for a completely customized holiday, yacht charters are one way to go. While many mega-yachts remain in private hands, some of the most exquisite vessels in the world are available for charter if you're willing to spend the dough.

Vacation planning starts with the select few brokerages that have access to the finest vessels at sea. “A luxury yacht charter is completely bespoke,” says Molly Browne, a charter broker out of Camper & Nicholsons International's London office. “Even if a client plans an itinerary, once on board there is no need to adhere to it. Everything is flexible, and the broker and crew will do their best to ensure that all your needs are taken care of.”

Camper & Nicholsons would know a little bit about the world's top yachts. The company was founded in 1782 as a premier shipbuilder and today is a global leader in the sale, charter and construction of mega-yachts. Take O'Mega, a 271-foot masterpiece with room for 30 guests and 28 crew that's now available for charter after a multimillion-dollar refit with new interiors and top-notch tech.

Y.CO is another high-end brokerage yacht addicts have come to rely on. “Be it global exploration, large groups, holistic retreats, regatta racing, adrenaline fueling or just the ultimate relaxing experience, we have something for everyone,” says Y.CO marketing director Bianca McNulty. Among the stunners in this portfolio is Serene, a 439-foot boat with an underwater glass room that turns the ocean into your private aquarium and a helicopter hangar—and if you're leaving the chopper at home, the hangar transforms into an indoor pool.

Eclipse

Sure, it's no longer the largest super-yacht in the world (that honor goes to the privately owned 590-foot Azzam), but at 538 feet Eclipse is the largest, most lavish super-yacht you can charter.

Launched in 2010, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's nine-deck ship of dreams has room for 36 of your best friends to bunk up in 18 luxury cabins, not to mention the crew of 70 required to keep it afloat. Go ahead and skinny-dip, because pool parties (there are two pools, one of which converts into a dance floor) are sure to stay private thanks to an “anti-paparazzi shield” that fires photo-ruining lasers at cameras.

Meanwhile, bulletproof plating and windows ensure that pirates don't stand a chance. If you do want to make a quick escape—or just check out the mainland—there are three helipads and a three-man submarine on board.

superyachtsmonaco.com

Stad Amsterdam

Thanks to this 250-foot clipper, you don't need a DeLorean time machine to experience the thrill of exploring the high seas in an authentic 1800s boat under full sail.

When it launched in 2000, Stad Amsterdam was the first true clipper ship built in more than 130 years. Up top you'll feel as if you've gone back in time as the crew hoists and sets the sails exactly as they would have back in the 1800s to reach speeds of 17 knots (about 20 miles per hour). A mahogany staircase descends into the Long Room, a magnificent teak cabin with copper finishes and a library that serves as a main gathering space and dining room.

It's powered by the wind but loaded with modern technology and amenities after a 2009 refit, sleeping 28 guests in 14 identical cabins. Two captains and two gourmet chefs are among the expert crew of 25.

O'Mega

Go island hopping around Greece in O'Mega, a 271-foot floating palace that was recently refitted with luxurious new interiors and top-notch technology.

Up to 30 guests can spread out in one master, four VIP, five double and five twin cabins. That still leaves room for 28 crew—a near 1-to-1 ratio.

Relax in the Jacuzzi or in the two elegant saloons, one on the main deck and the other on top of the boat where spectacular views abound. Below deck there's a full movie theater and well-equipped gym; an aft deck extends for easy water access. You'll want to be in the water with all the toys: a speedboat, two wave runners, three kayaks and a slew of towables including water skis, wakeboards and inflatable rafts.

Last month, "South Park" co-creator Trey Parker bought a gorgeous seven-bedroom mansion in Los Angeles for over $13.89 million, according to real estate blog The Real Estalker.

The Spanish Colonial estate was listed through Prudential California Realty agent David Offer.

Perhaps Parker's purchase is tied to the fact that he'll soon be having a baby with his long-time girlfriend Boogie Tillmo.

The new home of the "Book of Mormon" co-writer is located in LA's Brentwood neighborhood, and has over 10,000 square feet of property filled with hardwood floors, stenciled ceiling beams, and hand-painted tiles.

It also comes with a whole-house sound system, solar heating, pool house, and at least seven wood-burning fireplaces.

How To Win Friends, Influence People And Not Get Banned From Reddit

new reddit meme fail

We could stand to learn a thing or two from Reddiquette, the (semi-official) code of conduct for Reddit users.

Reddit, the "front page of the Internet," is a social behemoth of a site that lets people instantly create or join a web community about any topic. Users submit links or text posts and others vote them up or down based on how interesting they find the content. This leaves you with a prioritized list of what people in a community find most interesting at any given moment.

If you didn't already know, Reddit's engagement is massive. In the whole of 2012, it saw 37 billion pages served to 400 million unique visitors. Redditors voted 4 billion times, an average of 133 per post.

We can't help but feel like the quality guidelines for how to behave on the site have quite a bit to do with these impressive statistics. Check them out – not only do many of them make good rules for your offline life, knowing them can keep you from getting your account banned.

Remember the human.

Behind every pseudonymous post is a breathing human being with a name and a blood type. Just like you! So be considerate.

This rule implies and includes almost all the others. No trolling, no flame wars, no posting other people's personal information. You get the idea.

Consider the famous "golden rule" in effect: Treat others the way you would want to be treated.

Use proper grammar and spelling.

Pick your reason, it doesn't matter – proper grammar and spelling matter because it's 1). better to be understood than misunderstood, 2). important to use a standardized system of communication with agreed-upon rules, 3). demonstrates a level of care and intelligence towards what you're writing.

Be receptive to polite corrections as well. It'll only make you a better communicator.

Search for duplicates before posting.

No one likes a visit to the Department of Redundancy Department. You add far more value when you share a brand new something than when you post a YouTube compilation of people falling down for the seventh time. (It's still hilarious after seven times, though.)

This also extends to posting hoaxes. Check Snopes.com first.

14 Things You Didn't Know You Could Do With Your iPad (AAPL)

phil schiller ipad miniThe iPad has some tricks up its sleeve that you might not know about.

While many complain about the software being "stale" (well, until iOS 7 comes sometime this fall), there are many features on the iPad that you can take advantage of if you know the right settings, gestures, or apps.

These are our favorite of the less well-known features and capabilities (whether native or app-assisted) in our iPads.

Access your home computer and use it from anywhere in the world

We've been using and loving iTeleport ($19.99) as a means to access our computer at home while we're out with our iPad. Start and stop large downloads, email yourself files you need while you're mobile, or scare your family by playing music from an empty room.

You'll come up with plenty of your own creative ways to use this app.

Remotely wake up your home computer

If you want to use the previously mentioned VNC software and your computer is set to go to sleep after a certain period of inactivity, you need to wake it up before remotely accessing it.

A number of apps support a protocol called "Wake On LAN." All this means is that they can push a signal from your router to your computer to wake it up. Then you can fire up your VNC app to take care of whatever you like.

We recommend iNet WOL ($1.99).

Switch between apps with a special gesture

Instead of activating the multitasking bar and searching for a recently used app, you can make a four-finger swipe to the left or right to switch between your apps.

9 Ways Windows Phones Still Absolutely Crush The iPhone (NOK, MSFT, AAPL)

nokia lumia 928 windows phone 8 home screenDespite its flaws, there's still a lot to like about Windows Phone 8.

It's a unique take on a mobile operating system.

Unlike Android, which is in many ways a copycat of the iPhone, Windows Phone stands out as a fresh take on mobile.

And in some ways, it's actually better than iPhone, the top-selling smartphone at the moment. We've been playing around with Windows Phone 8 a lot since the launch of the Nokia Lumia 928 and put together a few features that make it better than the iPhone.

NOTE: Before you go nuts in the comments, let's be clear. We're not saying Windows Phone is better overall. We're not saying iPhone is better overall. These are just individual things we think Windows Phone does better than the iPhone. That's it.

Some Windows Phone apps look a lot better than they do on iPhone

It's no secret Microsoft is having a hard time getting developers to make apps for Windows Phone 8. In fact, Microsoft has been paying developers to build apps.

However, many of the apps that are in the Windows Phone Marketplace are simply gorgeous. In many cases, they look better than they do on the iPhone. Our favorites (so far) include: Foursquare, Spotify, Evernote, and Facebook.

Windows Phone's built-in integrations of Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook are lifesavers

Windows Phone 8 has a handy app called People that pulls in updates from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Instead of opening each individual app, you can view all your friends' status updates and notifications within the People app. It's very handy.

Multitasking is a lot better on Windows Phone

We don't think Windows Phone has the best multitasking solution. Android wins there. But managing multiple apps on Windows Phone is a lot better than it is on iPhone.

On Windows Phone, you just press and hold the back arrow button at the bottom of your device. This pulls up a slideshow of apps you currently have open. Just tap the app to reopen it.

On the other hand, the iPhone makes you double tap your home button and swipe through rows and rows of icons. It's really tough to find the app you're looking for and probably one of our biggest pet peeves with the iPhone's software.
