Mario Batali Reveals His 10 Favorite Books

Mario Batali

Mario Batali is the brain behind famed culinary establishments Eataly, Del Posto, and Babbo, among others. He's also written many bestselling books and cookbooks, including "Molto Italiano" and "Molto Gusto."

But when he's not writing (or cooking), he's reading the books that inspire his culinary genius.

We asked Batali to share his reading list with us. Here are his 10 favorites, along with his reasons for his picks.

"The Road Home," by Jim Harrison

"I love Harrison's ability to capture the wonders of nature and the twisted complexity of human interaction," said Batali.

"The Road Home" is told from the perspectives of five different characters, namely the protagonist Dalva as she returns to Nebraska to find the son, born of incest, whom she'd abandoned 30 years ago. The book continues the saga of the Northridge family from Harrison's 1988 book Dalva.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude," by Gabriel García Márquez

"A mystical and beautiful adventure entwined with the magic of the mysterious gypsy culture," Batali told us of "One Hundred Years of Solitude."

This book, which is full of magical realism, depicts the village of Macondo and its residents, including José Arcadio Buendía, who built the village and who deals with the shadows of a civil war and the ghost of the man he killed who still haunts his house.

"Don Quixote," by Miguel de Cervantes

"Captures the bravura and picaresque genius of the Spanish character," Batali said.

Originally published in two volumes, "Don Quixote" tells the story of a self-made knight who, after reading so many chivalrous tales, decides to revive chivalry by setting out on a series of disillusioned, though good-intentioned, adventures. It's one of the most canonical books in Spanish literature.

These Are The 9 Best States To Retire In

$

retirementAs the housing market keeps showing signs of a strong turn-around, it might finally be time forbaby boomers and empty-nesters who want to downsize to feel confident again about selling their homes and relocating to some place sunny or near the water. Using data from Kiplinger's list of top states to retire -- based on special tax breaks for seniors -- AOL Real Estate zeroed in on cities or neighborhoods that provide easy access to the amenities and lifestyle that might fit the active older adult.

Absent from our list is any city in California. In fact, California topped Kiplinger's list as one of the least tax-friendly states for retirees -- given that it has the highest tax rate in the U.S. And only two on the East Coast made our list -- aside from, of course, Florida.

View the slideshow below to see which states we found to be the most friendly to retirees -- listed in alphabetical order, along with some homes for sale in each. What would be your pick be for the 10th state? Tell us in the comments, along with the state where you chose or would most like to retire.

ARIZONA: Linking Golf With Entertaining

With a low personal income tax rate that tops out at 4.54 percent, and exempt Social Security benefits, Arizona is a great place to retire, according to Kiplinger's.

Homeowners age 70 and up can apply to defer their property taxes if they meet certain residency requirements. That's extra money that can go toward hiking equipment.

This two-bedroom end unit townhome on a corner lot in Prescott features a great room with fireplace, a kitchen with pass-thru to the dining area. There is two car garage and a bonus side-entry golf-cart garage. It's priced at $249.900.

DELAWARE: Bike to the Boardwalk

With no state or local sales tax, Delaware can be a haven for retirees. Taxpayers age 60 and older can exclude $12,500 of investment and qualified pension income from state income taxes, reports Kiplinger. Whereas older homeowners may qualify for a property tax credit, up to $500.

Located close to the beach, this 1,350-square-foot condo with garage is in a gated community in Rehoboth Beach. The home, listed at $334,900, has access to a bike path into town for dining and shopping and the boardwalk. The community features a pool with wading area and a hot tub.

FLORIDA: A Relaxed State

There's no inheritance tax or state tax in Florida and retirement income is not taxed. Some 65 and older long-time residents of certain Florida cities and counties can receive an extra homestead exemption up to $50,000 and/or an exemption equal to the assessed value of the property, as long as the real estate has a fair market value of less than $250,000, reports Kiplinger's.

Walton Beach is a perfect place to retire. This luxury Gulfside condo with two bedrooms plus a bunk room comes furnished and is listed at $335,000. The Destin West community has a heated swimming pool, a "lazy river" pool, and large heated hot tub. There is also an elevator assisted sky bridge. The listing boasts that it is "seaside luxury with a toes in the sand location."

The U.S. added just 169,000 new jobs in August, missing analyst expectations.

The employment rate dropped to 7.3% from 7.4% in July. But that was largely thanks to the continuing decline in labor force participation.

As back-to-school season got underway, the U.S. gained in retail trade employment (+44,000 jobs) and education and health services (+43,000), according the Bureau of Labor Statistics new report.

In the report, the BLS breaks down the state of American jobs sector by sector. We have the charts for you.

Here's the overall jobs picture

The Biggest Box-Office Bombs Of Summer 2013

$

jobs ashton kutcher

Despite a record $4.7 billion dollars earned this summer at the box office, there were still plenty of box-office flops.

From disappointing weekend openings to films that didn't carry well domestically or overseas, there were nearly as many box-office hiccups as there were success stories.

We've compiled the worst performing movies of summer 2013.

Click here to see the biggest losers of the summer >

We're going back to May, since the summer movie season officially kicked off with "Iron Man 3" May 3. (After the past few summers studios are increasingly releasing all of their big potential blockbusters from May-July leaving August a dry spell.)

These rankings are based on production budgets, how much studios had riding on the films and how hard they underperformed opening weekend along with overall worldwide grosses taken into account.

A note on a few summer releases not on this list that have been on other worst lists of the summer:

"After Earth" and "Smurfs 2" do not appear here because after accounting for foreign box office, the films should not be considered bombs. While Will Smith's "After Earth" certainly had a poor box-office opening ($27 million) and was a dud here earning $60 million, the film, a costly $130 million, went on to earn $243 million worldwide.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, insiders at Sony who distributed the film said they could lose $20 million on the film back in June.

"Smurfs 2" earned a paltry $67 million domestically, but soared overseas to take in $255.8 million worldwide.

While "Elysium" didn't break out to become Neil Blomkamp's next "District 9," the more expensive Matt Damon film has grossed $179 million. It cost an estimated $115 million. There were much bigger upsets than this TriStar film.

"jOBS" (Open Road Films)

Release date: August 16
Estimated budget: $12 million
Opening weekend: $6.7 million
Worldwide gross: $15 million

Though Ashton Kutcher looked like a dead ringer for Steve Jobs, Joshua Michael Stern's jOBS opened to brutal reviews. Apple employees also called it nothing more than a work of fiction. Aaron Sorkin will be releasing his own bio-pic of the tech guru.

(Source: Box Office Mojo)

"Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" (Lionsgate)

Release date: May 10
Estimated budget: $15 million
Opening weekend: $4.6 million
Worldwide gross: $9.2 million

Normally, Tyler Perry films do exceedingly well at the box office. However, this film was directed not by Perry himself, but instead first-time director Tina Gordon Chism ("Drumline" writer). The film became Perry's lowest box-office opening to date. Despite starring "Scandal" star Kerry Washington, Craig Robinson ("The Office") wasn't a big enough draw to bring viewers.

(Source: Box Office Mojo)

"Getaway" (Warner Bros.)

Release date: August 30
Estimated budget: $18 million
Opening weekend: $4.5 million
Worldwide gross to date: $6.3 million

Again, you probably didn't hear a lot about Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke's need-for-speed-esque thrill ride until after the film came out. The film was poorly marketed, with poor reception and tracking from social media.

The Best Boutique Hotels In Las Vegas

platinum hotel Las Vegas

Las Vegas, land of the 5,000-room megaresort and the Strip, is beginning to take a more intimate turn.

As smaller independent hotels have become more popular—and non-branded hotels within hotels are sought for their higher levels of service—well-known boutique names are making appearances.

Click here to go straight to the hotels >

Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace arrived in the former Centurion Tower in April, joining the similarly exclusive SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. And more are in the works. In 2014 the town will welcome the Delano Las Vegas, which will move into the space vacated by THEhotel at Mandalay Bay, and the new 188-room Gansevoort Las Vegas, a boutique renovation of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon, a remake courtesy of Caesars and the Gansevoort Hotel Group. Hospitality company SBE follows with its SLS mixed-use resort and casino in the former Sahara.

The boutique trend is a fortunate consequence of some unfortunate economic times. New construction stalled during the financial downturn, making renovations to existing properties—even on a grand scale—an attractive alternative. Nearly every hotel has scrambled to keep pace with improvements; the overall quality of rooms on the Strip has never been better. While gaming will always be an important part of the Las Vegas economy, the city’s fine-dining venues, which are a major draw among boutique hotels, are slowly eclipsing the gaming floor in popularity as visitors put more of their money toward shopping, dining and shows.

And while much will be made of the “boutiquification” of Las Vegas in the coming year, it is worth noting that the standard is somewhat different there. Several hotels, like Rumor Las Vegas, hold true to Sin City’s debaucherous reputation. And while Nobu and Gansevoort, each with fewer than 200 rooms, adhere more closely to a boutique strategy, SLS will have more than 1,600 rooms and the Delano will house 1,100 (still small compared with the better-known behemoths on the Strip). Consider the trend to be more an aesthetic than a size—this town doesn’t do diminutive.

Artisan Hotel Boutique

This 64-room property is a favorite with Las Vegas hotel industry folk, who gather for its popular nightlife scene and all-day weekend pool parties.

Inside the austere white building two miles off the Strip, Artisan’s maximalist aesthetic translates into Art Deco–inspired lighting and statues, leather furniture, heavy drapes and reproductions of paintings by the likes of Michelangelo, Klimt and Picasso—a disparate approach that somehow works.

Like at its sister property, Rumor Las Vegas, uniquely adult amenities are on offer. Rooms start at $80; 1501 W. Sahara Ave.; 702-214-4000; artisanhotel.com.

SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino

MGM’s 51 two-level, one-, two- or three-bedroom SKYLOFTS feature (depending on your choice) their own private entrance, gallery foyers, sweeping staircases, butler pantries and billiard rooms.

Book the two-bedroom Terrace Loft, with a bi-level outdoor balcony and plunge pool overlooking the Strip and you’ll feel as though you’re in a villa miles away. The suites come with some of the best amenities around, including multiple in-bathroom televisions and spa butlers delivering baths with color-therapy lights to the infinity spa tub.

The MGM recently completed a “grand renovation” that encompassed major eco-friendly upgrades (solar shades, LED lights) to all of its 3,570 rooms and 642 suites. Another perk? SKYLOFT guests have preferred access to all the nightspots and restaurants, like Hakkasan, a new Cantonese-themed eatery and nightclub, and Joel Robuchon. Suites start at $750; 3799 Las Vegas Blvd. S.; 702-891-1111; skyloftsmgmgrand.com.

Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace

Right off the casino floor in the 4,000-plus-room Caesars Palace, star chef Nobu Matsuhisa opened his first hotel this spring within what was the Centurion Tower. His restaurant anchors the sanctuary, created with natural materials like mixed-wood wall tiles.

Guest rooms combine grasscloth wall coverings, traditional black Umi tiles in the bathrooms and an unconventional nod to the flowing Zen ink brushwork of Hitsuzendo on the walls—though the natural touches belie the high technology that runs it all. Special elevators deliver guests straight to their floor without stopping, and a smartphone app allows them to order all-day in-room dining from Nobu, reach the concierge and even contact housekeeping.

Eighteen suites, including a 4,350-square-foot Nobu Penthouse, just opened. Some suites even have their own sushi counter space for personalized chef service. Rooms start at $250; 3570 Las Vegas Blvd. S.; 702-785-6677; nobucaesarspalace.com.

I Went To Burning Man And It Was Even Crazier Than I Expected [PHOTOS]

Burning Man

I like festivals.

I got my feet dirty during NYC's Governor's Ball, listened to lots of music at Coachella, checked out the parties, and even embraced the outrageous outfits.

But Burning Man made these festivals look wimpy.

Burning Man, as the website proclaims, is "an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada."

This year, over 61,000 people attended, many of them in the tech industry.

Check out my trip here >

While most people go for the full seven days, I only did three, so my experience may have been different from others. But the beauty of Burning Man is that everyone can have whatever kind of experience they want.

For me, I loved biking around during the hot desert days looking at all of the beautiful art installations constructed in the middle of nowhere and taking advantage of strangers' generosity by way of wine tastings, zip lines and fried chicken.

For others, the festival comes alive at night. As the sun goes down, the lights of Black Rock City come up and the pulse of the music keeps people awake until well into the following day.

Since most people who haven't been to Burning Man seem to be confused by what it actually is, here are some photos that sum up my trip.

It all started with this: a cheap, leopard suitcase I purchased on the streets of NYC. Everything you bring to Burning Man you risk getting seriously dirty or losing. I felt okay sacrificing this.

I packed it full with costumes, sunscreen, sunglasses, flashlights, food, and other items on the official checklist. Everything is in plastic bags to keep it clean from the impending desert dust.

By the time I got to the airport, this bad boy weighed a whopping 53 pounds.

Part of the Burning Man experience is roughing it.

The 61,000 people who attended this year's Burning Man Festival all stayed in tents, yurts, RVs — or didn't sleep at all.

But some "camps"— as the clusters of tents and RVs are called — are nicer than others.

For example, I went to Burning Man and stayed in this small, smelly RV:

Others stayed in tents like this:

But not all accommodations are so ... dusty.

The gourmet meals are served buffet-style in a private tent.

There was sea bass, risotto, and fresh veggies!

Heirloom tomatoes and burrata cheese drizzled with balsamic vinegar!

Burning Man

A while ago, we asked our readers to "fix" Reddit for us. While we love the site — and its mindbogglingly massive audience (70 million users per month) — we're often baffled by its arcane, finicky navigation.

Skip straight to the Reddit redesign >

The permalinks and comments can be difficult to follow, particularly for new users. Even those links don't show the entirety of a Reddit conversation: There are "parent" and "load more comments" links, too.  If you land on a Reddit page that's in the middle of one of these conversations, it can be difficult to figure out where it begins.

Since then, you've been sending us some speculative concept design for a new, improved Reddit.

We're kicking things off with this set of drafts from Scott Hatfield. You can see more of his work here.

Here we go!

Hatfield's Reddit looks more like a media site than a link aggregation site.

The Best Berries for Your Health

Beer Berry Bramble

Yes, they’re little. But berries are big on color, flavor and health benefits.

Indeed, they’re "the ultimate anti-aging superfood," says registered dietitian Lauri Boone in her new book, "Powerful Plant-Based Super Foods."

"They top the charts with their high levels of antioxidants and phytochemicals to keep your brain young, skin glowing and reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer."

Consider the health benefits of these nine berries, from acai to goji:

Acai berries

These, Boone says, are the anti-aging super berries. They’re small, dark purple and grow on the tall palm trees of South America. Acai berries are packed with 19 amino acids, an array of fatty acids and an impressive number of cell-protecting antioxidants. In addition to boosting immunity and protecting against chronic diseases, acai berries are good for the heart and lower the risk of neurological diseases.

Blueberries

Just call them the "blue dynamos." Blueberries are packed with manganese, which is an energy-boosting mineral; about 4 grams of fiber per cup; and vitamin K, which helps build bones. Research suggests that a blueberry-rich diet improves motor skills and helps fight diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Try tossing fresh blueberries into salads, smoothies, quinoa or baked goods.

Camu camu berries

These small, red berries grow on tropical bushes in the Amazon rain forest. They offer a tangy taste and are packed with vitamin C, which explains why they’re traditionally used to fight colds and the flu. They also help maintain healthy eyes, gums and skin, and play a role in strengthening the tendons and ligaments, Boone says. If you can’t find them fresh, add a teaspoon of camu camu berry powder to juices, smoothies and salad dressings.

Making spaceships takes years of research and significant amounts of capital.

Click here to skip to the photos of XCOR's Lynx spacecraft >>

That's why the big names in the private space sector all seem to be founded by billionaires who love space: Elon Musk with SpaceX, Jeff Bezos with Blue Origin, and Richard Branson with Virgin Galactic.

Of course, there are exceptions. One of those exceptions is XCOR Aerospace, a small company based in California's Mojave Desert (with expansion to both Texas and Florida in the coming months).

By taking a different approach to rocket engine design based on simplification and iteration, XCOR has created a spacecraft that will be able take off like a plane, reach space in three minutes, conduct scientific experiments, and safely glide back to Earth - four times a day and for a fraction of the price of the rockets traditionally used for scientific work in space.

During a tour of XCOR's hangar at Mojave's Air and Space Port, I was able to see how XCOR's iterative design philosophy has enabled its engineers to make a vessel that's turning heads in the space industry despite having a minuscule research and development budget compared to its peers.

Pulling into a space port feels kind of liking making a right-hand turn into the future.

The port is so spread out that the entrance itself is a road slightly longer than half of a mile.

When you get to the big rocket, you're actually at the space port.

Silicon Valley Homeless Encampment The Jungle San Jose 12

The Jungle is the largest of many Silicon Valley homeless encampments, and the 65 acres bordering Coyote Creek in San Jose can be home to up to 175 people at a time.

It is the largest homeless encampment in the continental United States.

From kids to convicts to moms and dads and the mentally ill, The Jungle is a desperate mix of people out of whatever options they might have once had.

When Business Insider visited The Jungle over the course of a week in mid-July the city was getting ready to clear the homeless out again after they had just settled back in from a previous eviction.

It's a back-and-forth with no easy answers as Silicon Valley's cost of living increases, but the jobs and affordable housing needed to keep its poorest residents inside and off the streets remains unseen.

Welcome to the Jungle, the largest homeless camp in the Silicon Valley and continental United States.

Business Insider visited The Jungle several times in mid-July to talk to the people who live here and see what their lives are like.

This Map Of Homelessness In Silicon Valley Shows Just How Close The Tech Elite Are To The Destitute

California's Silicon Valley is justifiably celebrated as the center of America's innovation economy.

Some of the most beloved and successful companies in the world are located there, built by generations of entrepreneurs, investors, and engineers who have used their immense talents to change the world.

And yet, despite Silicon Valley's remarkable wealth, talent, and inventions, the Valley has also failed to meet all of its residents' most basic needs, starting with food and shelter. The Valley, in fact, is home to the largest homeless camp in the continental United States, which is located in a middle-class neighborhood in San Jose.

In Silicon Valley, the gap between a company like Google and a vast homeless camp like "The Jungle" is called The Great Divide.

Business Insider went to Silicon Valley and San Francisco last month to learn more about The Great Divide.

We were surprised every step of the way by the courage of those on the streets and the generosity of individuals and corporations throughout Silicon Valley.

The infographic below is followed by some photos that show just how close to home this problem hits. jungle graphic07 copyedited

The 20 Hottest Startup Hubs In America

Startup Office

Silicon Valley is the most famous place for startups to thrive, but it's far from the only one. A recent report from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation took a look at what areas of the United States had the highest density of high-tech startups.

It broke down which metro areas have seen a rapid rise in the number of startups, and which are coasting on a strong base. Silicon Valley's dominance isn't surprising, but perhaps more so is the rapid rise of places like Kansas City, Portland, and Salt Lake City.

Interestingly, the strongest influence on startup density isn't a strong research university in the area, but a concentration of established companies that help spin them off.

20. San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos, Calif.

1990 rank: 15

Top companies: Qualcomm, Illumina, Isis Pharmaceuticals

San Diego's particularly well known as a hub for biotech companies, driven by UC San Diego and its medical center, but there's a large telecom and technology presence as well.

19. New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner, La.

1990 rank: Outside of top 20

Top companies: iSeatz.com, Kickboard, Entergy

In the aftermath of Katrina, there's been a flood of young, ambitious, and driven people hoping to help reinvent the city. As a result, many more people are starting companies there than ever before, and an increasing infrastructure is being built to support them. There's still a long way to go though.

18. Kansas City, Mo./Kan.

1990 rank: Outside of top 20

Top companies: Sprint, Cerner, Perceptive Software

Coach Klein: "The Waterboy"

Played by: Henry Winkler

Why he's so great: Coach Taylor is all about family, and that extends to the relationship he has with his players, becoming a father figure to many of them.

Coach Molly McGrath: "Wildcats"
