Burning Man Costumes

When it's nearly 100 degrees in the middle of the Nevada desert, clothing is limited, and sometimes even optional at Burning Man — "an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada."

But for those who do choose to wear clothing, it's all about the costumes.

And the ornate outfits have become a huge part of the festival.

Bikinis, body paint, tutus, masks, headdresses, wigs, floral crowns and feathers  it's all there!

Often all worn at once.

Everyone used bikes to get around the Burning Man desert, but that didn't stop people from breaking out their best costumes.

Like this guy, who went all out in green.

Or this creative dog-in-a-cage costume.

This Huge Zeppelin Could Revolutionize The Shipping Industry

aeros aeroscraft airship blimp

There are plenty of ways to move cargo around the planet, but none is perfect.

Planes require long quality runways and a lot of ground infrastructure to support their use. Ships are slow and can't travel far inland. Trucks are small.

Now a company from Southern California believes it has a new way of moving cargo that will revolutionize the industry, and change aviation forever.

They're using a zeppelin.

The Aeroscraft is the product of Worldwide Aeros Corp., founded by Igor Pasternak, a Ukrainian who moved to the United States in the 1990s. According to the company, Pasternak found an easy way to control zeppelins in flight, making them a practical way to transport huge loads through the air.

If their plan works, the Aeroscraft will not only change how we move commercial goods, it will make humanitarian relief and military missions easier and more practical. It uses only one third as much fuel as a traditional cargo plane, and doesn't require building airports or roads.

With a 2005 grant of $3 million from the Pentagon's DARPA, Aeros developed the technology, and built a working prototype.

Now they're getting ready for an imminent maiden test flight.

At the Paris Air Show in June, we sat down for an interview with the Aeros Team, including Vice President Shenny Yao and Director of Strategic Finance William C. Feeley.

They explained to us why this is a technology that could change the shipping industry, and how they plan to bring it to the market.

The Aeroscraft will come in two sizes: 66-ton capacity and 250-ton capacity. Its big advantage over a plane is that it takes off and lands vertically.

The key breakthrough came from Igor Pasternak. He devised a method to compress helium, making the ship heavier or lighter when necessary. That way, it doesn't float away as soon as its cargo is unloaded.

Aeros says its ships will be used to transport heavy machinery, like wind turbine blades.

kenny powers, eastbound and down

Since fall is here and that back-to-school feeling is in the air, it's time for a wardrobe revamp.

And that doesn't just mean getting items that will keep your style fresh, that means getting rid of items that make your style crusty and tired.

Not sure what those items are, guys? We're happy to help.

This is a list of items that no man should wear anymore. They have no place in your closet and in fact shouldn't even be brought out for Halloween.

Unless you're dressing like Kenny Powers, in which case live the night and then put it away. Forever.

Square-toed shoes

We're not sure when these were in style, but they now seem to occupy this vortex where fashion goes into a zombified state and continues to live on after death. Help us make it stop.

Cargo everything

If you don't have important things to put in your pockets — all your pockets — do not wear these. The legs are usually unfashionably wide anyway. This goes for shorts and pants.

The United Nations General Assembly has just released its second annual World Happiness Report, measuring happiness and well-being in countries around the world to help guide public policy.

Denmark topped the list of the happiest nations, ousting last year's winner, Iceland. Denmark was followed by Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

The United States ranked 17th, behind Mexico, though that was an improvement from last year's 23rd place finish.

The World Happiness Report ranks countries based on six key factors that contribute to well-being, including GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption, and generosity.

And in case you were wondering why any of this maters, it turns out happiness helps people live longer, have more productive lives, earn higher wages, and be better citizens in general, according to the report.

Here are the 25 happiest countries from the study below. Each color represents one of the six key factors (key at the bottom):

florida, retirement, 1970s

In the 1970s, thousands of retirees from the Northeast started migrating to Florida for warmer weather and stress-free living.

Developers quickly realized the opportunity and started building retirement communities like Century Village in West Palm Beach.

The "Gray Wave" of the 1970s resulted in a construction boom in the state, created a new industry of catering to the retired population, and made Florida a key political state.

Photographer Flip Schulke was commissioned by EPA to document the rise of retirement communities in Florida in the mid-1970s as part of the Documerica project. He captured the active lives of retirees in West Palm Beach, Miami and Key West.

From riding bikes to hanging at the pool to playing shuffleboard, retirement in Florida was the epitome of the American dream.

17 Cars We Can't Wait To See At The World's Biggest Auto Show

Kia Niro concept

The Frankfurt Motor Show — the world's biggest car expo — is kicking off this week, and the world's automakers are headed to Germany with 159 world premieres.

With the unusual, possibly lost in translation slogan "the world's most automobile show," the 65th edition of the International Motor Show is playing host to new rides from Europe, the United States, and Asia.

From all the new cars that will be on display, we've picked out the 17 most exciting, including a sexy new Bugatti and a powerful hybrid concept that could save Peugeot.

Perhaps Smart has realized that a two-seat car just isn't very useful: It's created the fourjoy concept for Frankfurt, its first four-seat ride. And it's electric.

The CLA 45 AMG Racing Series concept is made largely from carbon fiber, and Mercedes-Benz will actually put it into production 'if demand is high enough.'

This one's a mouthful: the Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition concept car should go into production in 2014, with a new color scheme, materials, and finish.

The 14 Best Stocks For Playing The Great American Shale Boom

$

texas oilfield

UBS is out with its annual Global Oil & Gas Analyser report, which goes into great depth about world's largest exploration and production companies.

Lately, everyone's been talking about how the U.S. has now become 'Saudi America.'

And the UBS team, led by Jon Rigby, says America's shale boom is nowhere close to running out.

North American shale production will continue to dominate non-OPEC output, with the U.S. alone contributing half the average annual output growth in the coming years alone.

By 2020, the U.S. becomes the world's largest oil producer.

On shale gas, "the US in particular enjoys a combination of factors – the scale of the resource, the scale and depth of the market, the scale and depth of the infrastructure and the oil service industry and the particular legal and regulatory conditions that are not exactly replicated anywhere else."

UBS's analysts sees an average 8% upside for the energy exploration and production companies it covers.

Here, we highlight the 14 North American-based firms that offer positive returns.

Marathon Oil

Ticker: MRO

Price target: $42

Upside: 22%

Recent price: $36.24

Upside case: Marathon's recently added holdings in the Eagle Ford will give it one of the best cash flow per debt adjusted growth rates in the industry. "Our upside case assumes MRO develops its Eagle Ford and Bakken Shale positions on tighter 40-acre and 320-acre spacing, respectively, enabling upside to its current unbooked resource estimates of 1 BBoe (Eagle Ford) and ~270 MMBoe (Bakken)."

Source: UBS

Continental

Ticker: CLR

Price target: $110

Upside: 19%

Recent price: $100

Upside case: As the leading producer in North Dakota's Williston Basin, UBS says Continental is the best play for taking advantage of that state's oil boom. "CLR’s goal of tripling production by 2017 offers unparalleled 5-year growth outlook among the mid-to-large cap E&Ps."

Source: UBS

Noble Energy

Ticker: NBL

Price target: $73

Upside: 19%

Recent price: $63.94

Upside case: Noble is UBS' overall top pick among the group, thanks to a large, diverse backlog of projects, lower costs, and impressive production rates. "Our upside scenario assumes that NBL exceeds its near-term production targets (+20% YoY in 2013) and continues to outperform operational expectations, particularly in its Niobrara [Colo./Ne./Wyo.] development where we see significant upside to the company’s conservative 2.1 BBoe resource estimate."

West African country Togo is the world's least happy country, according to the second annual World Happiness Report from the United Nations General Assembly.

Neighboring country Benin was the second least happy, followed by the Central African Republic, Burundi, and Rwanda. Civil war-torn country Syria was the ninth least happy country in the world.

The World Happiness Report ranks countries based on six key factors that contribute to happiness, including GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, having someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption, and generosity.

This year's list, created to inform policy choices, was topped by Scandinavian countries, while Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East and North Africa regions ranked lowest for overall well-being. (Here's a cool map that gives a full rundown of the list.)

We Really Hope Kia Brings This 'Impish' Concept Car To Life

$

Kia Niro Concept

The Frankfurt Motor Show— the world's biggest car expo — is in full swing this week, and Kia is among the automakers revealing their latest wares.

Along with the all-new version of the Soul, Kia has brought along a much more exciting concept, dubbed the Niro.

The Korean automaker calls the "playful but gutsy, sturdy yet impish" car a "hero for the city."

To cut through the marketing speak, it's a concept made to test European taste for a new B-Segment competitor.

The B-Segment, also dubbed Supermini, is made up of small, usually hatchback, cars, often with more fun and unusual styling than the typical sedan. It's a big deal in Europe, and steadily becoming more important in the US.

If a more staid version of the Niro does make it into production, it could well jump to American shores, to compete with more established B-Segment entries like the Ford Fiesta and Nissan Juke.

We like what we see so far. Here's hoping it makes it into production (after a few changes).

The Niro didn't come to Germany all the way from Seoul. It was developed at Kia's Frankfurt Design Studio, less than a kilometer from the show grounds.

Kia says the Niro 'combines a mischievous character in a clearly robust and substantial yet stylish bodyshape featuring a mix of contrasting materials in compact, purposeful dimensions.'

Our translation: 'The Niro is an unusual looking car we made to gauge European public interest before creating another B-Segment competitor.'

peyton manning ravens broncos

Parity is still king in the NFL.

This weekend, 12 of the 16 games were decided by a touchdown or less, and four of our top-10 teams from last week's power rankings lost.

As a result, the Patriots and Bears shot up the rankings, while the Redskins and Ravens fell hard.

32. Jacksonville Jaguars (previously 32nd)

Record: 0-1

Week One result: 28-2 loss to Kansas City

Biggest thing we learned this week: Blaine Gabbert is not the future in Jacksonville.

31. Cleveland Browns (previously 25th)

Record: 0-1

Week One result: 23-10 loss to Miami

Biggest thing we learned this week: Brandon Weeden is a mess. He had three INTs in the first half alone.

30. San Diego Chargers (previously 26th)

Record: 0-1

Week One result: 31-28 loss to Houston

Biggest thing we learned this week: We have no idea how they lost after holding a 28-7 lead in the second half. We have no idea how they scored 28 points on 250 yards. We have no idea about anything.

8 Foods That Cause Bloating

$
0

sad face

One second, your stomach is flat. The next, it’s too swollen to squeeze into your jeans, and you’re burpy and gassy to boot.

If bloating sounds like the opposite of fun, well, an army of voices have already made that case. But the good news is we can often take steps to prevent it.

Indeed, what we eat and drink plays a direct role in bloating. Experts recommend avoiding these dietary choices.

Legumes

If you need to fit into a tight dress, steer clear of beans, lentils and peas. Some of the sugars they contain are difficult for the body to break down, which leads to gas and bloating. If legumes aren’t negotiable, stick to small portions or take Beano, a digestive enzyme product, beforehand.

Dairy products

If you have lactose intolerance – which means your body doesn’t have the necessary enzymes to break down sugar – dairy products will trigger bloating. There’s no need to remove milk from your diet, says registered dietitian Keri Gans, an Eat + Run blogger and author of “The Small Change Diet.” Simply opt for the lactose-free variety.

Asparagus, broccoli and cabbage

Sure, the green stuff is nutritious. But these veggies also contain raffinose, a sugar that remains undigested until it reaches the large intestine, where it’s fermented by methane-producing bacteria. Eat these in moderation, and couple them with other foods – doing so will help prevent bloating. And keep in mind: “Your body probably digests them better when they’re cooked, not raw,” says registered dietitian Stephanie Middleberg, who’s based in New York.

This Cold-War Era Bunker In Las Vegas Is The Suburban Dream, Built Entirely Underground

backyard underground bunker

40 years ago, Atomic war seemed imminent to most Americans.

It's estimated that 200,000 fall-out shelters were built in the U.S. during the '60s and '70s as people scrambled to prepare for the worst.

But some bunkers were decidedly more lavish than others.

Take 3970 Spencer Street in Las Vegas, for instance. The two-bedroom home is located in a 40-foot-by-46-foot room that's roughly 25 feet below ground.

It's a virtual relic of 1970s suburbia, complete with a "backyard," swimming pool, two-bedroom guest house, dance floor, and a built-in barbecue grill. There's even a 360-degree mural of what life looked like above ground.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal, which visited the home this summer, reports that it was designed in 1978 by a man named Girard “Jerry” B. Henderson, who built these types of shelters for a living with his company Underground World Home, Inc.

It's currently on the market for $1.6 million through Kingly Properties LLC, according to real estate listing website Redfin.

Welcome to 3970 Spencer Street. There's a two-story home above ground with a four-car garage.

There's also a turbine ventilation unit as well as air conditioning units hidden behind boulders around the one-acre lot.

But the real magic happens when you get below ground via an elevator or staircase accessed through the caretaker house.

Cool X-Ray Images Show The Technology Inside Luxury Goods

We usually think of luxury items as just aesthetically beautiful creations, but craftsmanship often goes way below the surface.

Paris-based photographer Laurence Picot set out to peek inside some of the world's priciest items with his new exhibit LuxInside (via Wired).

To create the x-ray prints, Picot teamed up with radiologist Dr. Jean François Paul, software designer Sylvain Ordureau, and graphic designer Ricardo Escobar. With their combined range of skills, they created stunning photographs with updated scanning technology.

The photographs took years to make since the 3D imaging software had to be perfected. After de-noising the images, the team was able to differentiate between the different types of metals and materials that were used below the surface.

The LuxInside exhibition is produced by the Institut Français, and features a total of 14 art prints as well as the real objects that inspired them. Check out some of the photographs below.

The 10 Best Coffee Shops In San Francisco

Philz2

San Francisco serves up some of the best java in the country, with strong flavors and cozy storefronts that keep the city satisfied.

Our friends at Yelp have helped us assemble a list of San Francisco's best coffee shops.

While some popular local chains dominate the top ten, there's also tons of variety among the small shops.

And these shops don't just serve your standard cappuccino or latte either. From mint mojito espresso to Affogato (a shot of hot espresso over vanilla ice cream) to waffles and sandwiches, these 10 coffee shops stand out from the rest.

#10 Cafe Algiers

50 Beale St

Originally a sandwich shop that expanded to offer coffee, Cafe Algiers is still renowned for its spicy turkey sandwich with avocados on a Dutch Crunch roll. It offers quick but delicious espressos and mochas in the busy San Francisco financial district.

"The coffee is fresh, the bagels are toasted to perfect, and don't even get me started on the sandwiches,"Ben H. wrote.

#9 Jane

2123 Fillmore St

Jane brews scrumptious Stumptown coffee and offers a wide variety of baked goods, both gluten free and not. Yelpers recommend their espresso and salad selection and give extra points for the friendly staff.

"It always feels like a warm sunny day at Jane's. I really do love this cafe.  The pastries are usually fresh & the breakfast is always tasty.  I love the egg sandwiches, the banana bread, the citrus brioche and even the basic bread and jam. Love this spot!"Bernadette G. wrote.

#8 Blue Bottle Coffee Co. (Embarcadero)

1 Ferry Bldg

The Embarcadero location of Blue Bottle has a long line that Yelpers say is worth the wait. The New Orleans iced coffee and the Affogato, a shot of hot espresso over vanilla ice cream, are especially popular. Their waffles also earn rave reviews.

"Blue Bottle is NOT a hype. It's good. It's creamy. It's frothy. It's what you crave when it's 30 degrees in the winter (mocha) and 75 degrees in the summer (New Orleans iced coffee),"Emily C. wrote.
