This Is What Extremely Good Scrabble Players Look Like [PHOTOS]

scrabble portraits

For most of the hundreds of millions of Scrabble players around the world, spelling a word worth 20 points is a decent turn. The very top tournament players, however, aren't happy unless they can score around 35 or more — and that's when playing with time limits and ruthless competition.

Photographer Roger Cullman, who has played competitive Scrabble for 12 years, began taking portraits of top players four years ago at a tournament in Canada.

While the portraits, which feature players holding up their names or initials in Scrabble tiles, went viral as soon as they were posted, he has continued updating the series.

Scrabble's elite look a lot like you and me, with some quirkiness including the enormous beard of World Scrabble Champion Nigel Richards.

"I found it fascinating to observe the cross-section of players and variety of faces that I was able to capture," Cullman told BI over email.

With permission, we've republished some of his best Scrabble portraits.

Nigel Richards from New Zealand is the reigning World Scrabble Champion.

Travis Chaney from Ashland, Ore. was the first Scrabble player to get expert ratings in English and Spanish Scrabble simultaneously.

Adam Logan from Ottawa, Ont. won the World Scrabble Championship in 2005.

29 Vintage Photos Of Shenzhen From Before It Became One Of The World's Most Important Cities

clothes and luggage suggest that the two men in the foreground are from hong kongMandarin Oriental just announced it plans to open a 1,300-foot skyscraper hotel in Shenzhen.

The fact such a development was barely noticed is truly amazing — because not so many years ago, Shenzhen used to barely have hotels, let alone skyscrapers.

In 1979, Premier Deng Xiaoping named Shenzhen a Special Economic Zone, meaning it would be immune from the strict Communist regime governing the rest of the country and would instead would be permitted to pursue private enterprise.

At the time, the city had about 30,000 people.

Today, there are more than 3 million pumping out 500 billion RMB worth of GDP, according to the Asia Society.

"Has any urban area on Earth ever grown so rapidly and changed so dramatically in such a short time as Shenzhen?"

That's the arguably rhetorical question posed by transportation expert and amateur photographer Leroy W. Demery Jr. in a photoset he has posted to flickr documenting his journey to the city in the 1980s.

With his kind permission, we reproduce the photos here.

Here is his own introduction:

I traveled China for three months in 1983, and managed to visit, or "pass through," every province except Tibet, Hainan (part of Guangdong Province back then), Fujian and Taiwan (which I visited in 1980)  However, I made my "first visit" to China on 1980 July 17. I joined a half-day "cross-border" tour operated by China International Travel Service (CITS), Hong Kong. Booking was easy and the price was very reasonable.  Bao'an County, which had a settlement history dating back nearly 1,700 years, was renamed Shenzhen City in January 1979.

At this time, the total population was stated at 300,000. The population of the urbanized area was stated at 20,000 - that's "twenty thousand" - and the urbanized land area was stated at 3 km2. Establishment of the Special Economic Zone was approved in August 1980 - that is, roughly one month after these photos were taken. I saw virtually no sign of the amazing changes that were soon to begin.  Travel guidebooks published during the early 1980s state that China began admitting unescorted foreigners in 1981.

However, our Hong Kong-based CITS guide said that there was a "new arrangement:" one could obtain a visa to visit Beijing and Shanghai in three days. You simply applied for the visa, she said, "and on the third day, you go." So I might have visited (at least) Beijing and Shanghai in 1980, three years before I actually did.

Today, Shenzhen is one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

glenn kessler for iosApple is about to launch a brand new look for the software that powers iPhones and iPads this week.

It's called iOS 7, and starting September 18 you'll be able to download it for free.

Because of the drastic design change in iOS 7, many developers and designers had to rush to adapt their own apps to match Apple's style.

Over the past week, a handful of developers have jumped the gun and released new apps that have design elements that go along with iOS 7.

They're not alone. Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, and other bigger apps are all planning on launching newly designed apps for iOS 7. But you're going to have to wait for those.

In the meantime, here are a few apps you can download now to get ready for the new design in iOS 7.

Hipmunk's iOS 7 app is cleaner and simpler, allowing you to just focus on the task at hand: finding a cheap flight or hotel. You can see the old version on the left and the new one on the right.

Reeder, a news-reading app, released a brand new app called Reeder 2. The new app is extremely minimal and leaves you to focus simply on what you're reading. Reeder's old app is on the left and the new design is on the right.

11 Knockoff Startups We Like Better Than The Originals

When it comes to startup success, it's not always about being original.

In many cases, success is about finding a niche and working to do the very best job possible within that space.

Back in June, Valleywag had an article about the "Stupid Startup Clone War." In it, the writer laments that so many companies in the tech startup scene are merely "half-baked" takes on other startups.

In particular, he points out the many startups are simply "X company but for Y," such as Vine, the "Instagram for video."

He then proceeds to list the many examples of such startups on AngelList, a site that aims to bring together startup teams and potential investors.

While the point of the post is that many of the ideas are silly at best, a closer look reveals that some of his examples are actually quite clever.

Nudge is Klout for healthy living. Instead of scoring the social media reach of its users, it encourages better living by making it a competitive game. Unlike Klout, people will actually be happy for you if your Nudge score increases.

Check out Nudge on the App Store.

HomeStars is Yelp for home improvement. It lets you read reviews of the experiences that people have had with local contractors. For bigger renovations, this app could be the difference between a job well done and a sleazy contractor doing shoddy work on your home.

Pixplit is "a collaborative Instagram." By letting users mix and combine their photos, it offers a fresh take on the photography app that doesn't simply rely on fancy filters.

Meet The 28 Most Powerful Women In Mobile Advertising: 2013

$

Diana LaGattuta

While there are plenty of influential women in the mobile ad business, most of them have CEOs above them who are male. When women are mobile adtech CEOs, it tends to be at smaller companies they founded themselves.

So here is our ranking of the most powerful female executives in the mobile ad business.

Skip straight to the list >

First, we asked our readers to submit nominations. To ensure the nominations weren't self-serving, we also asked you to submit two nominations from other companies, rivals or colleagues. And we asked for revenue numbers in dollars, to gauge the size of the business these executives are in charge of.

This is not a complete list of every influential woman in mobile advertising, obviously. We chose the women with larger client bases, greater revenues (or spending), larger staffs and more innovative ideas than their peers.

You can see more details on our ranking methodology at the end of this list. And here's last year's list for comparison.

28. Kathy Leake, co-founder/CEO of LocalResponse

Leake co-founded LocalResponse with Nihal Mehta, the investor best known for his early funding of AdMob. Her profile rose this year because Mehta stepped aside as CEO to become executive chairman; at the same time it looks as if LocalResponse is looking to be acquired.

LocalResponse now has about 30 employees and has taken $8 million in funding.

LocalResponse's ingenious but simple offering: It's a mobile retargeting agency that serves location-based ads based on the content of your social media actions. If you tweet that you're hungry, you might next see a local pizza joint ad, for instance.

Twitter's recent big moves have been to open up its advertising API (to allow companies to place ads directly into the system) and to buy MoPub, an ad network and exchange. LocalResponse has not yet been named an Ads API partner. We'd love to see LocalResponse break out of that "interesting startup" phase and get to the next level.

27. Diana LaGattuta, vp/marketing at NativeX

NativeX, an app development/in-app advertising platform, has annual revenue in the "tens of millions," we're told. Its employee headcount is now 170, and it has taken $15 million in venture funding.

LaGuttata has a long history in mobile, having been a former global marketing director at Nokia and, as far back as 1995, a senior marketing manager at Cingular.

26. Polly Lieberman, vp/agency sales at Celtra

Lieberman again was referred to as a "rockstar" by her colleagues in the business.

Celtra offers AdCreator, a rich media ad production, delivery and analytics platform. This year it added mobile video analytics to the platform. The company also signed a deal with DDB Chicago to allow the agency to use AdCreator for its clients.

Celtra's other clients have included Nike, P&G and Paramount Pictures, and agencies/adtech companies Carat, Digitas, Hill Holliday, Isobar Mobile, Joule, MEC, Mindshare and Mobext.

Celtra says it became profitable in Q3 2012 with revenue growth of more than 300 percent. However, the company declines to disclose hard dollar numbers. We believe its net revenues are modest at this stage. The company has ~65 employees, and has plans to grow to 100 people after taking another $4 million in funding at the beginning of 2013.

Celtra has offices in Boston, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, London and Ljubljana.

The 12 Most Overrated Jobs In 2013

$
0
0

Public relationsSome jobs just get all the attention. Take event planner, for example: The idea of working alongside famous people and handling big money accounts may seem like an exciting job, but the reality is often a very different picture.

Job search site CareerCast used survey data that "weighed stress, physical demands, and both the current and future employment outlook" across occupations and data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to create a list of the most overrated jobs of 2013, released on Tuesday. The list also takes into account data from the company's Jobs Rated report, where a lower score signifies a higher rating, which includes the competitiveness and growth potential of specific fields.

Topping the list are advertising account executive, surgeon, stockbroker, and public relations manager, which all require long, stressful hours. Many of these professions also made last year's list of the most overrated jobs, except economists and computer programmers, which are new this year.

"People don't realize the baggage these jobs come with," Tony Lee, publisher at CareerCast, tells Business Insider. "The perception is cool; the reality is a dog-eat-dog world."

Consider surgeons. Although they make a median salary of $311,078, they deal with high stress levels daily and have a lot of pressure on their hands. "When you're a surgeon, your life is not your own," Lee says. "You cannot go anywhere without your phone. It's also very physical demanding because you stand on your feet all day."

High turnover is also a common theme for many of the professions on CareerCast's most overrated list.

12. Psychologist

Median Salary: $67,650

Projected Growth: 22%

Why: "Psychologists tend to work with difficult clients, and the field’s median pay scale and hiring outlook are slightly below comparable positions in the health care industry. Aspiring psychologists also face a crowded market, as The Princeton Review says psychology is one of the top three current college majors by enrollment."

Source: CareerCast

11. Economist

Median Salary: $91,860

Projected Growth: 6%

Why:"Economist is great work – if you can get it. While the median salary is among the top 25 of all careers measured by the 2013 Jobs Rated report, the hiring outlook is low."

Source: CareerCast

10. Computer programmer

Median Salary: $74,280

Projected Growth: 12%

Why: "Careers in technology are typically winners, but the outlook for computer programmers lags behind other paths in the industry. The BLS reports that many American companies opt to send their computer programming work overseas at lower rates, thereby diminishing job prospects domestically."

The Absolute World Towers were chosen for their aesthetic beauty. Nicknamed "Marilyn Monroe" for their curving shape, no two floors in the towers are exactly the same.

Also making the list this year were skyscrapers from Abu Dhabi and Qatar. 11 buildings made the Emporis list in total, with three of the new buildings tied at number nine on the ranking.

#9 (TIE) ZHENGZHOU GREENLAND PLAZA — Located in Zhengzhou, China, the Zhengzhou Greenland Plaza houses office space and a 435-room hotel. The tower includes a mirror at the top that reflects sunlight down into the hotel's atrium.

She moved one of our tests because she didn't feel like we were ready yet! She really wants to see you do well! Study guides, a friendly face, and a good attitude! Take her!"

#3 Kenneth Anderson, Music, University of California San Diego

What students say:

"There is no bad word to say about Ken. I went really intimidated by the fact that I can't sing, but then you realize everybody else can't sing either and we're in there for the same reason - to get rid of the fine arts req. He manages to get 300+ people to sing BEAUTIFULLY. It is so much fun in his class. How could I not recommend it? 20 thumbs up"

"I love this class! Professor Anderson keeps rehearsals lively and entertaining. He's got a great sense of humor and you actually end up learning a lot about the origins of gospel music. The concerts are a lot of fun to participate in, especially while singing with the phenomenal vocalists he invites to solo for us."

"He's very helpful. Makes you write a 15pg single spaced book, but gives you almost all semester to do it. Sounds hard, but it's really easy. "Two words: must take! His passion for teaching shows in the quality of his lectures and he's really helpful when you see him at his office hours. He's well liked amongst the students because he actually cares about your success. I wish every professor was like this guy. Dr. K is the man!"

#23 Jessica Damian, English, Georgia Gwinnett College

What students say:

"I'm a first year college student and this professor has no idea how much she has inspired me. She is without a doubt the best teacher to take!! As long as you attend classes and work hard, you won't have an issue. AMAZING PROFESSOR!!! AND A BEAUTIFUL PERSON!!!!!"

"Best teacher I have ever had. Amazing grasp on learning and focuses on class discussions over busy work. She focuses on each student individually and cares a great deal about all of them. Her goal is to help you succeed not only in her class but in the rest of your life. To top it all off she is gorgeous too! TAKE HER!!!!"

#24 Susan Young, Mathematics, University of Akron

Susan Young Top ProfessorWhat students say:

"Mrs. Young is an amazing professor. She teaches the course in an organized, straight-to-the-point fashion. She provides sample quizzes and tests, so you're never surprised by an exam question. Plus, if you're bordering an A or B in the class, she'll bump you up if she knows you've put in effort."

"Mrs. Young is an excellent math professor. She is articulate, explains concepts well, and her teaching style engages the student as she frequently poses questions and solicits for students' responses/feedback as she gives a lecture. She also updates Springboard (online website used at Akron) in a prompt manner. Highly recommended!"

#25 Anna Bass, Management, Southeastern Louisiana University

Anna Bass Top ProfessorWhat students say:

"I really adore going to her class. She is so enthusiastic about teaching and so well at teaching the materials that you want to learn in the class. Not only does she have experienced with what she is teaching but she also brightens your day and make you laugh and enjoy her class to the fullest."

"Awesome teacher! Knows her stuff and very easy to learn from. Gives a different quote every class and talks about the author of quote. Very willing to help with anything. I would highly recommend her."

Gianni Versace Mansion miami ocean drive

After more than a year on the real estate market, Miami's Versace Mansion finally sold for $41.5 million in a closed-door auction today.

For those keeping score, that's an $83.5 million discount from the home's original $125 million listing price.

Click here to skip to pictures of the mansion >

The infamous property was bought today by the Nakash family, owners of iconic '80s denim brand Jordache, according to The Real Deal. The Nakash's company, VM South Beach, is the chief creditor in the mansion's foreclosure case.

The Versace Mansion had trouble finding a buyer from the get-go. Originally listed for $125 million in June of 2012, the home was the most expensive in America at the time.

A few months later, however, it was price-chopped down to $100 million, then $75 million, and finally slated for bankruptcy auction.

The Nakash family reportedly plans to turn the storied mansion into a boutique hotel bearing Versace's name.

Fashion designer Gianni Versace originally bought the home in 1992 for $10 million, and invested $33 million into the property, adding a 6,100-square-foot wing, 54-foot-long mosaic-tiled pool (lined with 24-karat gold), and frescoes on the home's walls and ceilings.

He was murdered outside the property in 1997 by Andrew Cunanan. Tourists and fans still visit the home to take pictures on the steps where Versace died, which could explain why the estate had so much trouble finding a buyer.

Welcome to 1116 Ocean Drive in Miami, the infamous Versace Mansion. These are the steps where fashion designer Gianni Versace was murdered in 1997.

Versace originally bought the home in 1992 and spent $33 million renovating it.

He added mosaics, a pool lined with gold, and 6,100 square feet with a new south wing.

You’re in public, minding your business, on your way to work — and gunshots ring out.

This rare, but terrifying scenario is something that all of us should consider with the prevalence of mass shootings in modern times.

There have been five in the U.S. just this year alone, not to mention the staggering number of gun deaths in America.

So here are immediate actions you can take to ensure your survival, which I learned during my time as a U.S. Marine.

Don’t freak out. Don't scream. Stay calm.

1. Hit The Deck!

This seems like common sense. Matter of fact, all of these will seem like common sense. But you wouldn't believe how many people hear gunfire in a public place and just stand around, heads all in the air, bewildered, looking this way and that.

Get low!

The first thing you need to do is remove your dome from the where the bullets will be. So ... lower it.

2. Don't Scream

If you find yourself in a situation like this, keep your mouth shut. The last thing you want to do is make the shooter notice you.

That includes talking on your cell phonestay off of it, especially if you're in a city or other populated public place, where people who are within earshot but outside the danger zone can call the police.

Authorities might even be on the spot.

So don't yell, don't talk. Stay quiet.

3. Conceal Yourself

Seems like common sense, right?

But again, some people will sit well within sight of a perpetrator. Put something in between you and the shooter, preferably something that blocks his sight completely, but anything that offers a bit of misdirection (like tall grass) will help.

If he can't see you, he'll have trouble shooting you.

The Windsor Castle London pub

Drinking and eating at a pub is a British pastime, and in London many pubs feel like home.

Our friends at Yelp helped us round up the 10 best pubs in the city, as ranked by the Yelp users who've been there.

Yelpers seem to prefer traditional pubs, ranking Covent Garden's The Harp at the top of the list.

But a few more contemporary establishments also made the top 10, including a pub that serves Thai food and another that could double as a church.

#10 Waxy O'Connor's

14-16 Rupert Street
Leicester Square

With multiple levels and multiple bars, walking into Waxy's is like stepping into a Catholic-church-turned-Diagon-Alley-shop straight out of Harry Potter. They have great brews, great food, and a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

"Waxy's has got to be one of the most fun pubs in all of England,"writes Yelp reviewer Maria T. "Cheesy music aside... this place delivers the ultimate pub experience."

Note: Yelp's search results are based on an algorithm that is designed to provide the best results based on a number of different factors including review text, ratings, and number of reviews. Because several factors are taken into account, this is why you may see a 3.5-star restaurant with 500 reviews showing above a 4-star one with 15 reviews.

#9 The Victoria

10A Strathearn Place
Paddington

Built in 1838, The Victoria serves affordable food and drinks and has decades of history. Charles Dickens used to write from the second floor of the bar, and rumor has it that Queen Victoria herself paid a visit to the pub, which is how it got its name.

"This has quickly become my local after moving to the area,"says Alex S., "and I love it. It's hard not to. A great giant pub that serves cheap drinks. What's not to like about that?"

#8 The Greenwich Union

56 Royal Hill
Greenwich

Meantime Brewing Company's first pub, The Greenwich Union, has ample indoor and outdoor seating and a seemingly endless beer menu. Customers also rave about the food, especially the burgers.

"This has to be one of the best Beer/Burger/Chips parlays in London,"John S. writes. "The burger had a good flavor and was perfectly cooked/juicy... The service was bright and competent and I will definitely be back."

A bunch of New Zealand bros played what is arguably the kindest prank ever on their friend by switching all the taps in his house from water to beer.

The video of the scheme, uploaded yesterday by YouTube user LittleJohnnyNZ, already has more than 600,000 views.

It's totally worth watching, but it's a little over 7 minutes long, so we went ahead and captured the key images.

Click here to see water turn into beer >>

If you have the time, you should watch the whole thing:

The crew begins by rolling the kegs under the house.

It's a tight fit, but they make it.

It's also a little dirty.

No university athletic department makes more money than the University of Texas.

Despite a basketball team that failed to make the NCAA tournament and a football team that has struggled in recent years, the athletic department took in $163.3 million in revenue last year according to data collected by USAToday.com.

Piecing together information collected by USAToday.com as well as BusinessofCollegeSports.com and other sources, we can get a better sense of where all that money comes from and how the school spends it.

It is an eye-opening look into the world of big-time college sports and the millions it generates.

The football and men's basketball teams account for approximately 70% of the athletic department's revenue

Total athletic department revenue: $163.3 million

Football team revenue*: $95.7 million (59%)

Men's basketball team revenue*: $16.4 million (10%)

* Based on 2011 data collected by the BusinessofCollegeSports. Was likely slightly greater in 2012.

More than one-third of the revenue comes from ticket sales

Total athletic department revenue: $163.3 million

Ticket sales: $59.2 million (36%)

The Texas football team had six home games in 2012 (most other big schools have 7-8) and sold 605,304 tickets acording to the NCAA. The average attendance of 100,884 was fourth among all FBS (Division I) schools. The men's basketball team had 16 home games and sold 175,116 tickets, averaging 10,945 per game.

One-third of the revenue comes from television contracts and other licensing deals

Total athletic department revenue: $163.3 million

Rights and licensing deals: $53.9 million (33%)

A large chunk of this revenue comes from television broadcast rights. Texas has an exclusive deal with The Longhorn Network and ESPN that pays the school $15 million per year over 20 years. In addition, the school also takes in another $6 million from the Big 12 conference's contract with ESPN and $8.5 million from the conference's deal with Fox Sports.

frankfurt motor show crowd

Last week, journalists flocked to Germany for the Frankfurt Motor Show— the biggest car show on the planet.

Trying to catch the eye of the media (and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who attended), automakers hired performers, used lasers and smoke machines, offered massage seats, brought in the the Pet Shop Boys, had "booth babes" reveal their cars, and more.

Those gimmicks, plus lots of very cool cars, made for some great moments.

So enjoy the photos, then head over to Frankfurt —  the show is open to to the public until September 22.

Audi made the reveal of the Nanuk Quattro concept car exciting with lasers and smoke.

Ford's Vignale made a more demure entrance.

Mercedes-Benz staged quite the performance before introducing the S-Class coupe concept.

12 Of The Most Underrated Jobs In 2013

$

marine biologist scuba dive underwater

There are a lot of rewarding jobs that may not seem glamorous, but the pay is great and the job growth high.

These factors put them at the top of job site CareerCast.com’s list of the most underrated jobs of 2013 published Tuesday. The company used survey data that "weighed stress, physical demands, and both the current and future employment outlook," combined with data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The list also takes into account data from the company's Jobs Rated report, which includes the competitiveness and growth potential of specific fields.

"Perception is not reality in this case," Tony Lee, publisher at CareerCast, tells Business Insider. "There are some really great jobs on this list that you may not have considered because they don't seem so exciting."

Take an emergency medical technician, for example. The job doesn't require a college degree, but the job growth is a whopping 33%. Plus, it's a great way to break into the health-care industry.

"People who are EMTs love it," Lee says. "They are passionate about it, and we find that most of them wouldn't want to do anything else."

Many of these professions also made last year's list of the most underrated jobs, except EMTs and librarians. And three jobs on the list — EMT, plumber, and electrician — don't even require a college degree.

A stable hiring outlook, competitive pay, and life-enriching work are the common themes of many of the professions on CareerCast's most undervalued jobs list.

12. Librarian

Median Salary: $55,370

Projected Growth: 7%

Why: "Competition for jobs can be stiff — librarian scored No. 148 in the 2013 Jobs Rated outlook metric — but the field can be rewarding, evident in its ranking in both stress levels and workplace environment. Managerial qualities are important to overseeing a smoothly operating library."

Source: CareerCast

11. Electrician

Median Salary$49,840

Projected Growth: 23%

Why: "Similar to plumbers, electricians are in increased demand despite the slow construction market." At 23% projected growth through 2020, the BLS estimates a total of 133,700 jobs.

"Homes and businesses need more wiring than ever before, and electricians will be needed to install the necessary components," the BLS reports.

Source: CareerCast

10. Plumber

Median Salary: $49,140

Projected Growth: 26%

Why: "Despite slowed growth in the construction sector, specialty trades have provided opportunities for those seeking good jobs. Few are as accommodating as plumbing, which has seen strong hiring growth in the last year and is projected to swell another 26% by 2020."

"Demand for plumbers is expected to come from new building construction and stricter water efficiency standards for plumbing systems, such as low-flow toilets and showerheads," the BLS reports. With stability and the position’s low stress level score, it's a more valauble job than many might imagine.

Look Through The Eyes Of The Guys Who Disarm Bombs For A Living [PHOTOS]

Air Force EOD Bomb

Practice Practice Practice.

Kathryn Bigelow's pop-culture portrayal of military bomb techs in the movie Hurt Locker would have you erroneously believing (among other things) that the life of a bomb tech is an endless series of deployments, cowboy antics, and ditching bomb suits to "die comfortable."

The truth is that an average bomb tech might go through years of schooling and training just to "reduce"— the term they use for disarming — a bomb from a hundred yards away with the help of a robot and an XBox controller.

They've got the steady hands of a surgeon and the sharp minds of the world's best pilots.

Of course with any training, there is extensive planning.

There's also the bomb suit: weighing in at almost 100 pounds, internal cooling systems prevent total melt downs.

Along with the suit, techs carry with them an assortment of specialized tools, from wire cutters, to a basic knife, to full blown, 30 lb "iRobot 310 SUGV" man-portable bot.

5 Fascinating Brain Tricks Publishers Use To Get You To See Their Ads

$

Brains TED

As we've told you in the past, one of the biggest challenges advertisers face on the web is making sure the ads they pay publishers to display are actually seen by the people who visit the site.

Media tracking firm comScore estimates that nearly half of internet display ads are not viewable, meaning that people can't see them either because they are loaded in places that don't show up on their screens or because publishers fraudulently serve layers of ads behind the page shown to the public.

But according to Sticky, a firm that uses eye-tracking technology to figure out exactly which ads people look at, the actual number of ads people see is closer to 14%. According to company president Jeff Bander, people's brains are trained not to look at certain places on a page, meaning many ads publishers serve are merely white noise.

1. Images on the left, text on the right

When a brand displays a logo, it's important for the image to be on the left, with text residing on the right.

Here's why: the right side of our brains are used to process images and the brain processes visual information inversely. In order for the brain to process an image on the right side of a logo, it would first have to flip the image over again before doing so. This saves your brain work, and makes it less likely that its 100 billion neurons will shift focus to something else.

2. Use ambiguous facial expressions

When the brain encounters a face, it goes through a mental checklist of all the facial expressions it's seen previously. If the brain sees a smiley face or a frown, it immediately recognizes that the person in question is happy or sad, and then goes on to something else. But using an ambiguous facial expression forces the brain to investigate your image further.

Like the Mona Lisa. How many hours have people spent over the years trying to figure out what she's thinking?

3. Less is more

As anyone who has ever illegally downloaded TV shows online already knows, inundating someone with ads makes it less likely that they'll actually consider them.

"With ad-blocking technology advancing, publishers need to balance between ad revenue and content more than ever," Bander said. "Smart publishers will limit the number of ads and ultimately increase revenue because consumers will put up with ads if they are not the dominant real estate on the site."

It's National Cheeseburger Day — Here Are The 10 Most Popular Burger Joints In America

$
0
0

Americans love their cheeseburgers, whether they're top-notch gourmet or cheap take-out.

But not all burger joints are created equal.

In honor of National Cheeseburger Day, Foursquare put together a list of the most popular burger-oriented restaurants in the nation based on more than 4.5 billion check-ins over the past year.

Check out the top ten below.

#10 PYT, Philadelphia, PA

PYT Buff Mac 'N Cheese Burger

With the Fried Guacamole Burger, Hawaiian BBQ Burger, and the Donut Burger, PYT is home to some of America's weirdest (and tastiest) burger combos.

PYT also serves up boozy "adult shakes," making it more than just a typical burger joint.

#9 Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Austin, TX (SOCO location)

The Doddy Dip Burger Hopdoddy burger bar

Hopdoddy grinds their meat in-house daily for their tasty burgers, like the Doddy Dip that tops the beef patty with roast beef, sliced provolone, caramelized onions, horseradish mayo, and an egg.

And for those over 21, there are even specialty cocktails and wine.

#8 Burger Joint, New York, NY

Burger Joint NYC burger beer and fries

This old-school burger shack is hidden in the lobby of Le Parker Meridien and serves simple, amazingly-juicy burgers, which some say are the best you can get around Midtown Manhattan.

The brownies are also excellent — if you can save room.

#7 Holsteins at Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas, NV

Gold Standard Burger Holsteins at Cosmopolitan

Considered the best burgers in Vegas, gourmet burger joint Holsteins lives up to all the buzz with a Kobe beef "Billionaire Burger" and the "Gold Standard Burger" made with dry-aged beef sirloin.

But this is more than just a burger joint — Holsteins also serves up tiny sliders, salads, tons of sides, shakes, and cocktails.

#6 Zombie Burger + Drink Lab, Des Moines, IA

Deux-Nut burger Zombie Burger + Drink Lab

Open for lunch, dinner, and late-night drunk food, Zombie Burger + Drink Lab is beloved in Des Moines for its zombie theme and huge burgers.

It also has epic 'Burgers of the Week,' like the maple-bacon croissant "Deux-Nut" burger with cheddar cheese, fried egg, and bacon.

#5 Super Duper Burger, San Francisco, CA

Super Duper Burger with garlic fries

Garlic fries and a perfectly-grilled burger with fried egg and jalapenos are the favorite items at Super Duper Burger.

The line here can get a little ridiculous, but customers insist the gigantic portions are worth the wait.

#4 In-N-Out Burger, Los Angeles, CA (Sepulveda Blvd. location near LAX)

in-n-out burger

Since 1948, In-N-Out has been a beloved hamburger chain on the West coast with its perfectly-cooked burgers and Animal Fries.

The location near LAX airport gets the most foot traffic, as customers insist it's imperative to grab a cheeseburger straight off your flight.

#3 Stella's Lounge, Grand Rapids, MI

Government Cheese Stuffed Burger Stella's lounge

With a menu chock full of cheese-stuffed burgers, Stella's Lounge also serves 200 kinds of whiskey, tons of local craft beers, and even has vintage arcade games in the back.

Oh, and pro tip: Stella's is a bar, so minors can't come in after 8 PM.

#2 YEAH! Burger, Atlanta, GA (West Midtown location)

YEAH! Burger with fries and a beer

It's hard to know what to get at YEAH! Burger seeing as everything on the menu — from the Bison Burger to the Cobb Salad — is highly recommended.

This organic, gluten-free, and eco-friendly restaurant also serves fries, beer, and 14 specialty sauces at $.50 each.

#1 Shake Shack, New York, NY (Madison Square Park location)

Shake shack burger with fries

Unsurprisingly, the most popular burger joint on Foursquare is the Shake Shack at New York's Madison Square Park.

A popular destination with locals and tourists alike, it's hard to say no to this chain's classic burgers, fresh-cut fries, and thick, creamy shakes.

They also serve wine, and specialty milkshake flavors like yesterday's limited-edition "Cronut Concrete" with actual cronut holes.

Monaco's Princess Caroline Wore Some Of The Weirdest Shoes We've Ever Seen

Not all royals have the same classic fashion sense as Kate Middleton— case in point, Monaco's Princess Caroline, whose taste in fashion runs a bit more wild.

Yesterday, the Princess, who is the sister of Prince Albert II, attended a fundraising dinner for Monaco's new national museum. The royal wore a black dress and nude heels that looked strangely like feet.

The tromp l'oeil shoes, complete with painted toenails, were part of Céline's spring/summer 2013 collection, and generated a ton of buzz from fashion bloggers last fall.

Refinery29 wrote after they appeared on the runway:

The shoe’s design is ingenious: A pedicure is built right in. Who doesn’t need a reprieve from the nail salon every now and then? Which is great, except the shoe is available only for those with porcelain white skin. As much as we admire her, we doubt [Céline designer Phoebe] Philo is making a tongue-in-cheek statement about the racial homogeny on the typical runway.

Whether you love them or hate them, you definitely can't stop looking at them (neither can we).

They were less jarring from far away:

And here they are on the Céline runway last fall:
