Most Stylish Miami.002

Every December, Art Basel Miami transforms the normally sexy city into an even greater aesthetic haven.

While the international art fair in Miami draws dozens of blue chip and up-and-coming artists to display their work for gallerists and collectors, the event is also a great backdrop for the rich and beautiful to have a beach getaway.

Just in time for the city's must-attend cultural affair, StyleCaster has compiled a list of Miami's most stylish residents. On this year's list, you'll find everyone from fashion bloggers and models to publicists and philanthropists.

Here are the most stylish people in Miami this year (in no particular order):

  1. Rachel Russell is a stylist with an upcoming clothing line of travel inspired accessories, called KEMANA, that she produces in Bali.

How Fancy Bars Are Using Science To Make Better Drinks

rotary evaporator bar with no name london

As cocktails in top bars become increasingly sophisticated, more work is required to perfect them, and much of that preparation now happens behind the scenes. Rather than infusing fruit into vodka in a big jar sitting on top of the counter, bartenders spend time in a kitchen or laboratory using vacuum machines, tabletop stills, industrial filters, and other equipment.

Ice is no longer fast-melting chunks spat out of a machine; it is frozen into specific shapes using specialized gear or hand-carved from crystal-clear blocks by professional ice carvers. A tasty daiquiri may include ingredients that were frozen with liquid nitrogen, distilled, and clarified, all to spare you from getting mint fragments stuck in your straw.

Bartenders are still using fresh and local produce, but they're fine-tuning every aspect of the cocktails in which they're used, from temperature to texture to physical format. In this slideshow we look at some of the cutting-edge equipment used in bars around the world.

See the 10 bars using cutting-edge technology to craft their drinks>>

Artesian, London — CNC-Carved Ice

Ranked the World's Best Bar in 2013 for the second year in a row, The Artesian embraces opulence in its cocktail program, serving drinks like one that comes with a hovering scent balloon above the drink, and another inspired by "The Picture of Dorian Gray" that is served behind a mirror so that you must look at yourself while you drink it.

Even the ice at Artesian is fancy, carved especially for the bar with a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine something like this one. They use these machines to carve both round ice spheres out of blocks, and to emboss logos onto large ice pucks. These pucks float on top of drinks served in their giant cocktail glasses.

Tavernita, Chicago — Advanced Cocktail Tap System

Cocktails on tap have become a trend in recent years because customers want fancy, delicious cocktails with fresh, quality ingredients, but they don't want to wait 20 minutes for bartenders to add drops and dashes of 12 different things in every drink. By kegging cocktails, bartenders can make a large batch all at one time and serve them as fast as they could a beer. And though many bars are now offering one or two on tap, at Tavernita they have all sorts of beer and wine, plus ten cocktails on tap, and these include ingredients like paprika-infused rye whiskey, wine-pear syrup, and BBQ bitters.

The simplest way to serve a cocktail on tap is to use an inert gas like nitrogen and push it through the line as one would for wine on tap. But this only works for non-carbonated drinks like Negronis and Manhattans (and Sangria at Tavernita as well). Here they also offer some cocktails that are carbonated, like a Gin & Tonic with homemade tonic syrup, and a cachaca drink with grape soda. The kegs are all refrigerated and prepared by their "batchologist" whose job is to be very exacting with preparations, measuring ingredients by weight rather than by volume. They even calculate the dilution in advance and add water to the keg depending on whether the drink will be served on ice or not.

Little Jumbo, Victoria, Canada — Self-Contained Hydroponic System

Many bars and restaurants now grow their own herbs, fruits, and veggies on rooftop gardens, but that's probably challenging during the winters in Canada. Victoria bar owner Shawn Soole has installed a hydroponic system at Little Jumbo to grow produce throughout the year. The device is connected to the main water system and has lights on timers, so once they get the right sequence figured out, they can set it and forget it (until they need to reach in and pluck some for the drinks).

They have grown mint to make drinks like the traditional Mint Julep and the Pontarlier Julep, plus basil to make Gin-Basil Smashes, a cocktail that's a popular summer drink in Germany. While they're still dialing in proper growth times with the machine, Soole says he expects to grow verbena, lemon balm and thyme for use in future cocktails.

Study Suggests Artists Don't Reach Peak Creativity Until Age 42

A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Georges Seurat, 1884

Have you reached your peak creativity level?

If you're under the age of 42, chances are good your best creative years are still ahead of you.

That's according to a new study out of the Creativity Research Journal by economist Philip Hans Franses of the Erasmus School of Economics in the Netherlands.

Franses examined the lifespans of 221 famous painters between 1800 and 2004, and attempted to determine the year they created their most masterful work based on the artist's most expensive painting ever sold. He gathered the data from both Robert Cumming's "Eyewitness Companions — Art" as well as the Artprice.com database.

"For each of these artists, the most expensive painting was identified and taken as an indicator of peak creativity," Franses said in the study. "Of course, many other measurements are possible, but this seems to be the most objective one."

Objective, yes, but not necessarily the best method. Most of the paintings associated with the more well-known artists in the study are not their most famous work. There was also only a smattering of female painters who made the list, like Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Mary Cassatt.

Nevertheless, Franses found that on average, the painters produced their most highly-valued work of art when they were an average of 41.92 years old.

He also noted that the paintings were created when the artists had lived roughly 62% of their total lives, and noted that the fraction was striking given that the famous "Golden Ratio" found in art, nature, and even financial forecasting is approximately .618. "[My results were] only 0.0018 away from the divine fraction," Franses said.

Below are some of the more famous painters included in the study, as well as the age they painted their most expensive work to date.

Francisco Goya, "Suerte de Varas" (76 years old)

Edouard Manet, "La rue Mosnier aux drapeaux" (46 years old)

Claude Monet, "Bassin aux nymphéas et sentier au bord de l'eau" (60 years old)

Mary Cassatt, "In a loge" (35 years old)

Georges Seurat, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" (26 years old)

Vincent van Gogh, "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" (37 years old)

Paul Cézanne, "Rideau, Cruchon et Compotier" (55 years old)

Gustav Klimt, "Landhaus am Attersee" (52 years old)

Henri Matisse, "La robe persane" (71 years old)

Salvador Dalí, "Ma femme nue regardant son propre corps devenir marches" (41 years old)

Man Ray, "Impossibilité Dancer-Danger" (30 years old)

Pablo Picasso, "Boy with a pipe" (24 years old)

Frida Kahlo, "Autorretrato con chango y loro" (35 years old)

Georgia O'Keeffe, "From the plains" (47 years old)

Jackson Pollock, "Number 8, 1950" (38 years old)

Australia has only won nine Winter Olympic medals.

It makes sense — there's no snow there and the winter games take place in Aussie summer.

But Australian athletes are starting to figure out ways of getting around those inherent disadvantages.

During October and November Aussie athletes worked out on the beach, snowboarded on sand dunes, and put wheels on their bobsleds in preparation for the upcoming Sochi Olympics.

It's pretty impressive.

Alpine skier Katya Crema set up a starting gate in her backyard, and her friend tried it out.

16 Extravagant Gifts You Can't Wrap

Virgin Galactic Com

What do you give the person who has everything? A life changing experience, of course.

To help you think outside the box this holiday season, we've compiled a list of gifts you can't wrap, ranging from the practical — like buying someone a professional apartment cleaning — to the extravagant — like booking a seat on Virgin Galactic's first commercial space flight for a cool $250,000.

We also looked for some of the best adventures you can get around the globe, like swimming with the dolphins in the Bahamas or climbing to the top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Australia. They're listed here in increasing order of extravagance.

A professional apartment cleaning is great for the less-than-tidy.

Who doesn’t love coming home to a nice, clean space? For the apartment dweller who’s let their housekeeping go for the majority of the year, schedule a professional cleaning for them from somewhere like Urban Maid Green.

The best part of this company is they use all natural cleaning products to limit the amount of toxic residue in your home.

Pamper a fashion-forward friend with a personal shopper.

Also known as a personal stylist, these professionals aren’t just for sartorial old ladies. Since the luxury menswear market is growing faster than women’s, even guys like a professional’s opinion when it comes to dressing as dapper as possible.

Check out Nordstrom, Topman, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks or Neiman Marcus to make an appointment.

Pick up some sessions with a personal trainer for a fitness buff.

Give the gift of fitness by arranging for someone special in your life to get some sessions with a personal trainer. It’s a great gift for health nuts. But it can also feel like a pampering since the service is more personal than a gym membership.

Look for someone whose reputation you trust since they’ll be working so closely with your giftee. A super generous gift giver might look into Gunnar Peterson, who trains the likes of Kim Kardashian and Angelina Jolie. He’s also had his workouts appear in everything from Elle to Men’s Health.

The First-Ever Christmas Tree At Rockefeller Center Was Pretty Pathetic [PHOTO]

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree will be lit tonight with hundreds of thousands of spectators in attendance and performances by Ariana Grande, Leona Lewis, and Toni Braxton.

The first Rockefeller Center tree, however, was not quite as snazzy (via @TIME).

AP has the first photograph of the tree from 1931, and it was pretty dinky compared to more modern versions.

first rockefeller center christmas treeThis, however, was not the first "official" Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, which was completed in 1933. The tree pictured above was erected during construction of the building, when workers decorated a 20-foot balsam fir tree with a "string of cranberries, garlands of paper, and even a few tins cans," according to Daniel Okrent in his book, "Great Fortune: The Epic of Rockefeller Center."

And here was last year's tree. We've definitely upgraded.

Snapchat

As a kid, Dasha Battelle was so fascinated by comics,  she used to copy them out of the newspaper and The New Yorker.

So when the 24-year-0ld New Yorker began her job as a paralegal, she realized she needed an outlet for her creativity. That's when she discovered Snapchat.

"Personally, using Snapchat is really rewarding," Battelle told Business Insider. "It's a creative challenge for me — the kind of 'outside the box' thinking that I haven't really encountered at work. I know a lot of people are skeptical about Snapchat's potential right now, but I really believe in this app and think it will continue to be successful."

Her one suggestion for the app's developers? "The color spectrum — green needs more range!  Not everything can be done in lime green!"

It all started with the Big Bang — or did it?

Fans of CBS' Emmy-winning sitcom The Big Bang Theory have come to know and love Kaley CuocoJohnny Galecki, and Jim Parsons as their characters, Penny, Leonard, and Sheldon.

But they — and the rest of their adorably geeky gang — were hard at work in Hollywood long before the show's meteoric success.

Here's a look at the cast of The Big Bang Theory in some of their most noteworthy early roles.

"Big Bang Theory" cast then & now >

THEN: After appearing as Brady Bunch actress Maureen McCormick in the 2000 TV movie "Growing Up Brady," Kaley Cuoco scored a starring role on the ABC sitcom "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" (later known as "8 Simple Rules").

Then just 16 years old, she played Bridget Hennessy, the beautiful but ditzy oldest daughter of Paul Hennessy (the late John Ritter, who died three episodes into the second season). The series was canceled due to low ratings in 2005.

NOW: As Penny on "The Big Bang Theory," Cuoco has won one Critics' Choice Award and been nominated for multiple People's Choice and Teen Choice Awards.

(Not to mention the many accolades given to the cast and crew as a whole.) According to Deadline, she earns $350,000 per episode -- and is looking to top that if the show is renewed for an eighth season next year.

THEN: Before finding his inner geek on "The Big Bang Theory," Johnny Galecki was best known for playing David Healy on "Roseanne."

But he also had roles in some other 1980s and '90s classics. In 1989, at age 14, he starred as Rusty Griswold in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," alongside Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Juliette Lewis.

Some former gold bugs certainly think so.

And its value has skyrocketedin recent months.

But many readers at this point are probably wondering ... what exactly is Bitcoin?

Robert McNally, an iOS developer at parking payment startup QuickPay, gave the following presentation to last year's Hackers' Conference in Santa Cruz, answering exactly that question

With his kind permission, we have republished it here.

Let's begin ...

And start with basics.

In 2013, Bitcoin *is* money — at least for some — and that population grows each day.

A Chef Built The World's Largest Gingerbread Village In His Bronx Apartment [PHOTOS]

GBL Front Street

By day, Jon Lovitch is the executive sous chef at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. But by night, he's the creator of what has become, officially, the largest gingerbread village in the world.

With 164 separate structures that weigh in at a total of 1.5 tons, this isn't your typical gingerbread creation.

There's a school, town hall, egg nog distillery, pierogi store, hot chocolate brewery, and train station. Nearly 2,240 pounds of snow-like icing coat the miniature city.

GingerBread Lane 4

"GingerBread Lane" is on display at the New York Hall of Science in Queens now through mid-January, but preparation and construction is actually a yearlong process. Lovitch has dedicated about 1,500 hours of work to the village since February, baking each individual structure separately and storing them in an empty bedroom in his South Bronx apartment.

The hard work has paid off — the Guinness Book of World Records has officially declared it the world's largest gingerbread village.

And working on the festive project gives him a good break from his day job.

"Very little you prepare as a chef can last beyond a few days, and the products have to be as fresh as possible," Lovitch said to Business Insider. "Stuff with [GingerBread Lane] hits the floor, it's still used. If product breaks or has issues, I just reuse it. Also the taste with GBL is not relevant. At all. Only the smell."

Gingerbread Village 3

The display gets some pretty entertaining reactions from visitors, many of them small children.

"They just stare in amazement, and wonderment," he said. "It's pretty flattering."

After all of that hard work, disassembling the village will be tough, but visitors who happen to be there may get a treat.

"[It's] gutwrenching, makes you almost cry. When I go that day,I stare at it for an hour or more, just stare. Then finally force myself to tear it down," he said. "If there's a big crowd to take a piece home, the giveaway — it makes it so much easier."

FIFA Is Holding The $11 Million World Cup Draw At This Lavish Resort In The Middle Of Nowhere

costa do sauipe brazil world cup draw hotel

"This World Cup draw in Bahia may be the most ridiculous boondoggle of all time," Sports Illustrated's soccer writer Grant Wahl said yesterday.

The 2014 World Cup Draw will be held Friday in Costa do Sauipe — an isolated luxury resort near the port city of Salvador.

There are no residents within a 30-mile radius of the resort, according to ESPN's Gab Marcotti. And some are criticizing the event and its price tag ($11 million) as the height of FIFA's over-the-top extravagance.

The resort features swan boats, turtles, horseback rides, and white sand beaches. It's lavish, particularly when you consider the national economic woes that spawned widespread protests last summer.

The resort has nearly four miles of beaches.

It's split into a number of hotels. Here's the Sauipe Park Hotel.

GOLDMAN: Here Are Our Top 6 Trades For 2014

$
0
0

loonGoldman Sachs has unveiled its top six trade recommendations for the year ahead in a series of notes to clients.

The trades aren't for everyone and some of them are pretty technical.

Many of the recommendations are pair trades (buy one thing, sell another) driven by what is perhaps the most important and widely-expected macro development in the year ahead: a winding down of the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing program.

"The purpose of the Top Trade Recommendation list is, as always, to connect specific and actionable trade ideas to the set of key market themes that are likely to play out over the course of the year and that we expect to form the backbone of our strategic approach to markets for the year to come," says Goldman Sachs managing director Noah Weisberger. "While our initial list will be comprehensive, and connect back to the economic and market forces as we see them currently, we are likely to add to the list of Top Trade Recommendations (along with our usual slate of tactical trade recommendations) as the year progresses, as our views evolve, and as market risks and opportunities shift."

Go Long the S&P 500 In Aussie Dollar Terms

Originally introduced: November 25

Target return: 13%

The trade: Buy Dec 2014 S&P 500 futures and sell Dec 2014 AUDUSD futures.

The logic: Goldman says "the main case for U.S. equities is that the gap between real bond yields and earnings yields remains unusually high, in an environment where recovery should continue to convince investors that the economic backdrop no longer justifies this." Shorting the Australian dollar is a hedge: if Treasury yields rise too quickly — perhaps the biggest threat to U.S. equities in 2014, according to Goldman — the Aussie dollar should be one of the worst performers among major currencies. In addition, Goldman describes the Aussie as "a currency where we still expect reasonable declines" due to country-specific risks.

Go Long Euro Area 5-Year Rates, Short US 5-Year Rates

Originally introduced: November 26

Target: Yield differential of -130 basis points

The trade: Open long EUR swap (EONIA) 5-year rate and sell 5-year Treasuries.

The logic: Goldman forecasts U.S. growth will outpace euro area growth in 2014. "The choice of Treasuries over OIS or LIBOR on the short leg is motivated by the fact that yields on the former could underperform more than they have already in relative space as the Fed scales down its asset purchase program," says Goldman. "In the Euro area, we are of the view that German bonds may 'cheapen' further relative to EONIA as fixed income portfolios are rebalanced in favour of higher-yielding securities, particularly if the ECB eases further."

Go Long the Dollar Against the Loonie

Originally introduced: November 27

Target return: 8%

The trade: Go long the U.S. dollar-Canadian dollar exchange rate (USDCAD).

The logic: The macro view behind this trade is that the U.S. economy will outperform the Canadian economy in 2014. The Federal Reserve will begin winding down stimulus, while the Bank of Canada is one of the only major central banks with scope to ease further. And with reserve diversification into the loonie by EM central banks slowing, Goldman says Canada has lost a key source of funding of its current account deficit, which stands at 3% of GDP.

A Quick Guide To Seeing The Best Of Portugal

Lisbon

bit more formal and conservative than the Spanish, the Portuguese hold tight to their traditions. They love to show visitors the old soul of Portugal, graciously offering opportunities to experience it.

At the same time, amid the devotion to centuries-old cultural constants—seafood, port, blue-and-white tile work— there is a surprising willingness to modernize and update local customs and attractions. Only, of course, if done with proper respect to the past.

This itinerary, concentrated in Lisbon and the area surrounding Porto, works well for an extra-long weekend, providing a pleasurable taste of Portugal old and new.

Lisbon

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

The rooftop of a luxury hotel often houses a chic bar. But at the 282-room Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon, which was built in the 1950s and has a striking period art collection to match, the gym (Pilates studio, weights, cardio equipment, outdoor running track) takes the top spot.

Guests are rewarded with spectacular vistas of Lisbon, visible from the plate-glass windows that surround the space. If you’re feeling a little lazy, enjoy a quiet continental breakfast there instead. Rooms start at $465; Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca, 88; 351-21/381-1400

Cork & Co. 201311 ss portugal itinerary cork and co

Cork, which is harvested from the cork oak native to Portugal, is one of the country’s most venerable products. At Cork & Co., it’s given a contemporary spin, made into umbrellas, coasters, place mats and a host of other surprising items (skip the impractical cork scarf).

Its location in the Bairro Alto, a boho-chic area of Lisbon, provides lots of window-shopping opportunities. Rua das Salgadeiras 10; 351-21/609-0231

Cervejaria Ramiro

If you have a shellfish allergy, Lisbon might not be the place for you — locals take the stuff very seriously. For proof, consider outstanding seafood restaurant Cervejaria Ramiro, where there’s always a wait.

Eager diners line up outside, sipping beers ordered from the inside bar, and turn the wait into a friendly block party. Langoustines, clams with garlic and giant grilled tiger prawns are all delicious. Ask for an order of lupini beans, which are like tart little versions of fava beans, a favorite snack of Lisboetas. Avenida Almirante Reis, no. 1–H; 351-21/885-1024

Museu Calouste Gulbenkian

It might seem a stretch to compare this jewel of a museum — the collection of an early-20th-century oil baron —to the Frick Collection in New York or the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. But the comparison is apt, thanks to priceless paintings by the likes of Rembrandt, Hals, Degas and Gainsborough.

The decorative arts might be even stronger, from ancient Greek vases to golden Egyptian death masks to stunning Persian pottery. If you can only see one museum in Portugal, this should be it. Avenida de Berna 45A; 351-21/782-3000

100 Maneiras

A small restaurant decorated in cozy clapboard, 100 Maneiras has some big ideas when it comes to food. Chef Ljubomir Stanisic likes to be playful (a palate cleanser comes in little pots shaped like a human skull), including when he updates bacalao — salted cod, a Portuguese obsession—by hanging tiny dried chips of the stuff on a little clothesline.

All the dishes on the tasting menu, especially the foie gras lasagna, are well conceived. Make sure to get the wine pairings with each course. Rua do Teixeira 35; 351-91/030-7575

Conserveira de Lisboa

Founded in 1930 and still occupying its original small, charming space in Lisbon’s scenic waterfront area, Conserveira de Lisboa does one thing very well: canned fish. Not just tuna, though — mackerel, squid and octopus are just the beginning.

Even if you’re not buying, this family-owned store is worth a stop for the colorful vintage packaging. And its long-standing relationships with area fishermen perfectly suit the current interest in sourcing food locally. Rua dos Bacalhoeiros 34; 351-21/886-4009

Sintra

Pena National Palace800px Pena_National_Palace

Hire a car and go directly from your Lisbon hotel to Sintra, the unesco World Heritage site and famed summer retreat in the mountains just outside the city. Focus on the over-the-top Pena National Palace (built in the mid-1800s), which is much more interesting than the nearby Sintra National Palace.

Designed by German engineer Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege, Pena is a wild and woolly mash-up of architectural styles. Neo-Renaissance and neo-Gothic touches meet Moorish flourishes in additions to the old monastery. The rooms are surprisingly intimate, allowing guests to easily imagine life as a royal whiling away the summer months. Estrada da Pena, 2710-609; 351-21/910-5340

Vila Nova de Gaia

Graham’s Port Lodge

Porto, located about 170 miles north of Lisbon, has charm to spare, some of which comes from the presence of the port shipping houses spread out scenically along the south side of the Douro River, technically in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Graham’s Port Lodge — the newest visitor experience among the fortified-wine producers—re-opened in March after a renovation. It is one of the largest, best-executed welcome centers in Europe, including a tasting room done up like a traditional gentleman’s club, a wine bar, a restaurant, a shop and a mini-museum of the brand’s history. Make sure to try the tawny ports. Rua do Agro, no. 141; 351-22/377-6484

Livraria Lello & IrmãoO_serpentear_da_escadaria_da_Livraria_Lello_e_Irmão

Perhaps the world’s most beautiful bookstore, neo-Gothic beauty Livraria Lello & Irmão inspired J.K. Rowling, who once lived in Porto, for her design of the physical world in her Harry Potter books.

From the outside the building, built in 1906, looks like a church; inside the store is a perfectly composed vista of elaborately turned woodwork, trompe l’oeil paintings and a stained-glass ceiling dominated by a fantastical curving staircase with bright red steps. (Holster your camera—the staff strictly enforces a no-photos rule.)

Ironically, the selection of books is not that great, but visiting Lello—one of Portugal’s true architectural treasures—is still a must. Rua das Carmelitas 144; 351-22/201-8170

Villersexel 3Château de Villersexel, a French castle that was once the home of the noble Grammont family, is on the market at a $17.1 million asking price, The Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the owner, Baron Jean-Pierre Potet, the castle was destroyed twice: once in the year 1000 and again in 1871, during a battle of the Franco-Prussian War. When the Marquis de Grammont left the estate to fight in World War II, French civilians looted the castle, taking nearly all of its furnishings.

Using old photos as an aid, Potet was able to recover most of the original decor from nearby antique stores. The 38,000-square-foot chateau has an astounding 30 bedrooms and 15  bathrooms and is being sold with all of its historic furnishings intact. The 74-acre property also includes horse stables and a working farm.

The property is being sold by Xavier Attal of Immo Best International.

The Château de Villersexel lies on 74 acres of property in northeast France, near the border with Switzerland.

The centuries-old castle is designed in the Louis XIII style.

Backpackers in Thailand

While T+L has its own little black book of hotel tips and air travel tricks, we wanted to take a page out of yours too.

So we teamed up with CNN to solicit advice from its seasoned iReporters as part of our Ways to Travel Better campaign—and posed some questions to get them going.

What's your secret to navigating a crowded airport? How about a tip for nabbing a table at the hottest restaurant in town? Do you have a favorite money-saving app or website?

"Use the bookmark feature on Yelp to map the things you're interested in checking out," suggested Amelia Jo Hruby of Chicago, "so you're not running across town all day."

Other iReporters chimed in with tips for packing, from keeping essential medicines in a ready-to-go bag to stashing a pair of socks in your carry-on, so you don't have to tread where thousands of travelers' bare feet have been.

Read on for more of their advice, and tell us what indispensable lessons you've learned on the road in the comments below, or on Twitter with hashtag #TravelBetter.

1. When buying tickets:

“Buy tickets to major sights online before you go. You can skip the long ticket lines when you get there.” David McTier, Huntsville, Texas

2. When packing:

“Choose your shoes first, and then the clothes that work with them. Look for neutral and flexible colors for the greatest versatility.” — Quia Querisma, Plano, Texas

3. When flying:

“For complicated trips, I like flight-research startup site Flightfox, where experts compete to help you reduce the total cost of your ticket by fare hunting and tapping regional budget carriers.” — Vince Wong, New York, New York

4. When dealing with frequent-flyer miles:

“Be patient and don’t cash in your miles to fly domestically. Save them for the big-ticket international airfare.” — Matthew Colver, Castle Rock, Colorado

5. When comparing costs:

“The website Rome2Rio makes transportation decisions easy by comparing the travel time and cost of flying, driving, and taking the train between two destinations.” — Sharon LeMaster, Decatur, Georgia

6. When going through security:

“I keep a pair of socks in my carry-on. I slip them on so I don’t have to touch the ground where thousands of other travelers’ feet have been.” — Heather R. Helline, Cleveland, Ohio

A Dad Started Coloring In His Kids' Drawings — And Produced Some Amazing Art

FredDrawing2

Reddit has been buzzing about a dad who takes his young kids' drawings on business trips and colors them in to pass the time on the plane.

It's both an adorable collaboration between father, son and daughter as well as an impressive collection of surrealist art. We reached out to the artist, Fred Giovannitti, who goes by Tatsputin on Reddit, to find out more.

"I invent industrial equipment designed to save and protect the world's marine ecosystems," he wrote. "To help pay for this, I travel 10 days each month to Las Vegas, where I own a small tattoo studio."

When he's not traveling, Giovannitti lives in Delaware with his wife and two children, eight-year-old Freddie and six-year-old Sofia.

"Sometimes people seem like they don't want to bother me so they keep quiet," Giovannitti said in an email to Business Insider, "Other times, with the more sociable flight mates, they think I'm coloring my own drawings and are always surprised to hear the story behind what I'm doing."

His work with tattoos inspired the way he chose to shade the drawings with colored pencils. Lately, he has started experimenting with coloring his kids' drawings on his iPad using the ArtStudio app after snapping a photo of the line drawing. Giovannitti said it actually takes less time for him to work with the colored pencils because he's more comfortable with the medium, but either way, he can finish a drawing in one of the three-hour legs of his flight across the country.

"Although I will be dabbling more on the tablet," Giovannitti wrote, "I'll be sticking to the pencils mostly for our future collaborations."

Giovannitti colored this Santa just this week based on a drawing by his daughter Sofia.

Giovannitti also colored this holiday elf this week based on a drawing by his son Freddie.

This alien was colored using the iPad app ArtStudio.
