As part of their newly released results, Zagat created a list of the best restaurants in 20 major cities across the country.

Restaurants were rated on a 30-point scale, in the categories of Food, Decor, and Service. Scores between 26 and 30 are typically reserved for restaurants that are "extraordinary to perfection."

Prices are estimates, reflecting what diners should expect to spend on a single dinner with a drink and tip.

From an exclusive eight-seat restaurant in Miami to a classic French bistro in Fort Worth, the list has a little bit of everything, though each restaurant is sure to provide an unparalleled dining experience.

12 Ridiculous Online Courses You Should Take Just For Fun

the walking dead season 4 ep 2

Just like a traditional school, the courses now available online run the full spectrum from extremely practical to completely ridiculous and fun.

Anyone who missed the chance in high school or college to explore a subject they're fascinated with can now take an online course from some of the top universities in the world. Online learning platforms offer more than you might imagine, including classes on the plausibility of life on other planets and how to survive the zombie apocalypse portrayed in TV show "The Walking Dead."

They're also a reminder that education doesn't always need to be career-oriented, and can be something you simply want to know more about.

Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC’s "The Walking Dead"

Platform: Canvas Network

Affiliated university: The University of California at Irvine

Description: "From understanding social identities to modeling the spread of disease, this eight-week course will span key science and survival themes using AMC’s 'The Walking Dead' as its basis."

Topics include:

  • Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: Is survival just about being alive?
  • Social order and structures, from the farm and the prison to Woodbury
  • Social identity, roles, and stereotyping, as shown through leaders like Rick and the Governor
  • The spread of infectious disease and population modeling
  • The role of energy and momentum in damage control: How can you best protect yourself?
  • Nutrition in a post-apocalyptic world: Are squirrels really good for you?

Science & Cooking: From Haute Cuisine to Soft Matter Science

Platform: edX

Affiliated university: Harvard University

Description: "During each week of the course, you will watch as chefs reveal the secrets behind some of their most famous culinary creations — often right in their own restaurants. Inspired by such cooking mastery, the Harvard team will then explain, in simple and sophisticated ways, the science behind the recipe.

"Topics include: soft matter materials, such as emulsions, illustrated by aioli; elasticity, exemplified by the done-ness of a steak; and diffusion, revealed by the phenomenon of spherification, the culinary technique pioneered by Ferran Adrià."

Imagining Other Earths

Platform: Coursera

Affiliated university: Princeton University

Description: "Over the past two decades, astronomers have discovered over a thousand planets around nearby stars. Based on our current knowledge, it seems likely that there are millions of stars in the Galaxy that host Earth-sized planets in Earth-like orbits. What is the range of conditions for these planets to host life? In this course, students will engage with a wide range of concepts in astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology and physics with a focus on developing the background they will use need to think further about this profound question."

kobe bryant grinds teeth

Less than eight months after tearing his Achilles, Kobe Bryant is officially back in the lineup for the Lakers.

Achilles injuries are awful, especially for aging NBA players.

But work ethic is a crucial factor in overcoming injuries, and no one has a stronger work ethic than Kobe.

Whether it's waking up at 4 a.m., using space-age science, or abusing teammates in post-practice games, Kobe has proven over and over again that he's the hardest worker in the NBA.

He ran on an anti-gravity treadmill all summer to stay in shape without hurting his Achilles.

He decided to lose 16 pounds for the Olympics in 2012.

Kobe has never been out of shape, but he decided to change himself as a precautionary measure. He told the Guardian:

"With summer basketball leading directly into the season — and I'm expecting to play until next June — I have to take some load off my knees. I've got to shave some of this weight."

Byron Wien's 2013 Predictions Have Been Way Off

$
0
0

byron wien

Since 1986, investing legend and Blackstone Vice Chairman Byron Wien begins each January by attempting to predict the 10 big surprises of the coming year.

Wien should be given major props for even trying to do what many investing gurus might not. But in the interest of keeping him honest, it's time to score his 2013 calls.

In the past, Wien has seen about half of his predictions come true. Not bad.

Though this year, he thought that stocks would fall and gold would reach $1,900 an ounce. And that has to count against him pretty big.

NOTE: We awarded partial credit where partial credit was due.

Iran gains nuclear capabilities.

WRONG

Score: 0.2/1.0

Wien was correct in thinking that Iran would be a major theme of the year, so we awarded him partial credit. But he predicted that the country would "announce it has adequate enriched uranium to produce a nuclear-armed missile and the International Atomic Energy Agency confirms the claim."

In fact, the theme toward the end of 2013 was more toward disarmament, if anything. In June, Iran elected President Hassan Rouhani, who has taken a more open approach to the West. Weeks ago, Iran and the United States reached their first formal agreement in over 30 years. Iran agreed to freeze some of its nuclear program in exchange for decreased sanctions.

The S&P 500 declines to below 1300.

WRONG

Score: 0.0/1.0

To quote the iconic 1998 Adam Sandler comedy "Billy Madison,""I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul." Harsh, but the S&P is up over 1,800, jumping 23% year-to-date and perenially blowing past its highs.

Financial stocks tumble after a strong 2012.

WRONG

Score: 0.2/1.0

Wien was wrong on stocks again here, writing that financials in particular would "reverse the gains of 2012." Quite the opposite has happened — financial stocks have had a big year with the XLF rallying 29% year-to-date.

We awarded Wien partial credit for his prediction that "regulation increases and lawsuits persist as an industry burden." Two major stories from the year: The appointment of hardline SEC chair Mary Jo White and JP Morgan's legal woes. But neither has had any material impact on bottom lines.

10 Private And Embarrassing Emails That Went Viral On College Campuses

girl at computer

Whenever you're questioning whether you should click send on that email that might be a little too mean or not really funny, here's some advice — don't send it.

Whether intended for an internal list among friends, or blasted for a whole community to read, there are some emails that never should be sent — and it seems like the problem is particularly bad at colleges.

Students, professors, and administrators are all offenders — these are 10 emails that never should have been sent on a college campus.

'Deranged' Maryland Sorority Girl Yells At Sisterhood

Earlier this year, Gawker published an email sent by a member of the University of Maryland's Delta Gamma chapter to her sorority. In the "expletive and CAPS-ridden email tirade," the DG sister publicly and aggressively chastised the sorority for what she perceived as their awkwardness during parties.

Since it went viral, the letter has had numerous public readings, including by celebrities like Michael Shannon and Gilbert Gottfried.

Worst Line:"And for those of you who are offended at this email, I would apologize but I really don't give a f***. Go f*** yourself."

Michigan State Professor Insults Muslim Student Group

In 2006, a mechanical engineering professor at Michigan State University sent an email to the school's Muslim Student's Association in response to a planned on-campus protest. He used some terrible stereotypes to describe Islam — for example, saying that Muslim culture referred to women as "whores."

The professor later apologized for the "tactless and hyperbolic language" he used in the email.

Worst Line:"Please return to your ancestral homelands and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans."

Vassar Accidentally Admits 76 Applicants

While not technically an email error, Vassar College made a major Internet mistake last year when they falsely told 76 applicants that they were admitted to the school. Vassar accidentally left up a placeholder "test letter" that over 100 students viewed, before informing them that the verdict was due to a system error and may have been incorrect, the New York Times reported.

Vassar apologized to the effected applicants and said they would reimburse the $65 application fees.

Art Basel Miami is an international contemporary art fair held each year in Miami Beach.

But since it began in 2002 as an offshoot of the annual art fair in Basel, Switzerland, Art Basel Miami Beach has become as much about the parties as the art.

This year's fair brought out the likes of Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Paris Hilton, Lenny Kravitz, Steven Tyler, Elle Macpherson, and many more.

While some actually looked at art, most were just there to party — and we have the pictures to prove it.

Zoe Kravitz let her dad, Lenny Kravitz, and Steven Tyler into the DJ booth at the Dom Perignon party hosted by Alex Dellal, Stavros Niarchos, and Vito Schnabel at Wall club in the W Hotel.

Actor Stephen Dorff made an appearance with Derek Blasberg.

Before the club, Alex Rodriguez joined an intimate dinner hosted by Aby Rosen and Samantha Rosen at The Dutch in the W Hotel in South Beach.

How To Turn Any Car Into A Smart Car For $100

$

Automatic

In this heyday of smart technology, you can buy the equivalent of a FitBit for your car.

We took Automatic, an app paired with an on-board diagnostics dongle that logs your location, driving habits, and fuel usage to make you smarter on the road, for a test drive.

Click here to see how Automatic works >>

Just plug the Automatic dongle (called a Link) into your car's OBD port and you'll start getting a bunch of data about your driving logged into the companion app. Much of this data is ultimately meant to help you save money on gas.

For example, Automatic alerts you by making your phone chirp you when you break roughly, drive 10 or more miles per hour over the speed limit, or accelerate too rapidly. By giving you a heads up about your bad habits, it helps adjust the way that you drive to increase fuel efficiency. Better fuel efficiency means money saved.

The app gives you a daily and weekly score based on your driving, and compares your logged fuel economy with the EPA's estimated value for whatever car you own. If you're competitive, you'll love the fact that you can track your driving score week-to-week, and that the app will tell you where you rank compared to other Automatic users throughout the country.

Every time you park, the app also GPS-logs your location, so you never have to search hopelessly for your car in a huge parking lot again. Because the Link is plugged into your OBD port, it can sense when you have engine trouble, and can offer a potential diagnosis.

Finally, the accelerometer in the Link can sense if you may have gotten into a crash and Automatic personnel will alert local authorities.

Automatic works with Android and iOS, but only on the iPhone 4S and above.

It costs $99.95 and works with most cars made after 1996. You can check if it works with your car here.

First, you've got to connect your Automatic app with your Automatic Link dongle.

It only took my friend and I about five minutes to successfully get our Automatic Link plugged into his car.

And then it took another five minutes or so for the app to sync with the Link.

iphone 5 apps kevins homescreen

Apple and Google celebrated a big milestone this year.

The App Store commemorated its fifth anniversary with a fire sale of free downloads, while Google Play touted 50 billion downloads and over 1 million apps posted in the platform.

Despite the abundance of programs housed within these separate stores, quite a few slip below the radar that don't receive the recognition they deserve.

We've rounded up the most underrated apps you really should be using. Check out our top 15 picks.

Oyster is an on-demand e-book service every voracious reader should have.

Dubbed the "Netflix for E-books,"Oyster is a digital library that contains over 100,000 books for browsing. Available for the iPhone & iPad, the system requires a $9.95 monthly fee in order to download and read this extensive collection. Books can be synced between devices and the app has features like a bright light for reading in the dark. The fee is a small price to pay for the numerous options encased within this application.

Price: $9.95

Available: iPhone.

IFTTT syncs apps together to create powerful multi-tasking concoctions.

The best apps are the most simple. IFFT is one of them. By creating "recipes", IFTTT works with 75 programs to form powerful ways for your device to communicate. One experiment could be telling the built-in weather app to directly email the day's forecast to your inbox. Think of it as an app that you can program to do just about anything useful. As of right now, it's only available for iOS, but it should be expanding to Android within the year.

Price: Free

Available: iPhone.

The Moviefone app is a better alternative than the website.

By adjusting your location, the Moviefone app quickly scans the surrounding area to find the closest theater. If you see a new film emerge on the list but have no idea what it is about, the app connects you to its selection of reviews found on critical aggregator Rotten Tomatoes while watching high-quality trailers.

Price: Free

Available: iPhone and Android.

Last week I visited Stanford University for the first time.

My mission: to find the billion-dollar spots around campus where now-famous entrepreneurs began their careers.

Clinkle, Snapchat and Google all began at Stanford. Marissa Mayer and Instagram's Kevin Systrom also attended.

Here's how my billion-dollar hunt went.

My UberX driver dropped me off one mile from my destination. There weren't cabs around, just a red campus bus. So I had to hike through the quad to start my adventure.

The first thing I noticed were all the bikes. I was dodging bikers left and right. Many had character to them, like home-made bike seats, fake flower add-ons and baskets.

Vegetarians, rejoice! Jean-Georges Vongerichten — the head chef of the eponymous and four-star Jean-Georges restaurant in Manhattan — is coming out with a new vegan restaurant in 2014.

The top NYC chef told the New Potato, "We’re opening a vegetarian restaurant in the spring — 100% vegetarian, raw, and vegan."

This would be the 12th restaurant in New York for the talented CEO and restaurateur, as well as his 37th around the globe.

This year, Vongerichten opened the critically-acclaimed Spanish restaurant ABC Cocina, which was already listed on Michelin's Bib Gourmands for 2014, and his well-known restaurants The Mark on the Upper East Side and Spice Market in the West Village continue to be extremely popular.

As for which NYC neighborhood will be getting the latest Vongerichten eatery, the chef didn't say. Perhaps this time he'll even cross the bridge into an outer borough and satisfy Brooklyn's fine diners.

10 Perfect Places To Take A Winter Vacation This Year

$
0

6 cape town south africa

Winter vacations don’t always have to be synonymous with overeating and obnoxious relatives (but even if they are, you certainly deserve another trip that’s all about you).

Here, we’ve compiled our favorite picks for a cold-weather escape, whether you fancy zooming down the slopes, sipping hot toddies by the fire, or enjoying the culinary and cultural booms in places like Houston and Cape Town.

See the destinations >

Another bonus: If you travel during the first few weeks of January, you’re likely to score great deals on hotels and airfare. Here's where you should go this winter.

Houston, Texas

Why Go Now: Houston is truly a rising star in the Lone Star state. Houston's dining scene has foodies buzzing. Several restaurants have earned spots on national best-of lists, with pop-ups in unexpected places adding extra momentum.

A cornucopia of hot spots have revitalized the Downtown Historic District, including the pioneering Okra Charity Saloon, a buzzing bar whose profits are donated to Houston-based organizations. The Museum District, meanwhile, spans 19 institutions (11 of which offer free daily entry) over a 1.5-mile radius, including the recently opened Asia Society Texas Center and the Houston Museum of African American Culture.

Where to Stay: Located in a 1911-era bank building, the recently renovated Hotel Icon is a swanky spot in the heart of downtown that’s a quick light rail ride from the Museum District.

Plan Your Trip: Visit the Fodor's Houston Guide

New Orleans, Louisiana

Why Go Now: Winter comes two ways in the Big Easy: mellow and manic, depending on whether you visit during Mardi Gras festivities or not. We’re partial to the more mellow weeks outside of the big bash, when summer temperatures have cooled, crowds have thinned, and deals abound.

But that’s not to say New Orleans ever becomes quiet. Its locals are notoriously fun-loving. There’s always a reason to eat, drink, and be merry, whether it’s Reveillon dinners during the holidays or a just a night out on Frenchmen Street, with its superb jazz bars and restaurants. In late March, bookworms gather for the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival.

Where to Stay: Right in the heart of the French quarter, the historic Hotel Monteleoneblends luxury, location, and an always-hopping party at its rotating Carousel Bar.

Plan Your Trip: Visit Fodor's New Orleans Guide

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Why Go Now: Once a well-kept secret among skiing elite, this charming town and its premier Jackson Hole Mountain Resort have become a destination for more than their coveted slopes. The town itself, Jackson, beckons with a friendly, Old West vibe (don’t miss the iconic photo-op under the elk-horn arch on the square).

There are classic cowboy bars and restaurants, but newcomers like The Rose and Local have brought a touch of glam to the après-ski and dining scenes. Non-skiers will find plenty of nearby options, too: Think snowshoeing in Grand Teton National Park or snowmobiling in Yellowstone. And, with 12 cities that offer nonstop flights during the winter months, it has never been easier to get here for a weekend escape.

Where to Stay: Hotel Terra is an upscale, eco-friendly oasis just steps from the slopes in Teton Village. The hotel has chic rooms, some with full kitchens, fireplaces, and balconies, along with excellent on-property dining.
