THREES trailer

The latest iPhone game dominating the app charts is Threes!.

It's an educational game but highly addictive, particularly for people who like math.

Players must earn as many points as they can by lining up numbered cards.

Connect a '1' or '2' to create a '3'. After that, cards of "3" or higher can only be connected to their matching doubles.

For example: a "3" can only be paired with another "3" to make a "6", a "6" can only be matched with a "6" to make "12" etc.

It costs $1.99 to download for iPhone. Interested in learning more?

This is the main menu for Threes! Start a game by tapping the option at the bottom.

Swipe left or right to begin playing.

The cards will immediately appear on screen. Swipe in any direction to have each card connect. The two "3" cards at the bottom can connect by swiping up or down.

angela ahrendts

The most successful people in the world didn't make it on their own.

That's why LinkedIn asked over 90 leaders across a variety of industries to share the best advice they've ever received and continue using to this day.

Many recalled something that their parents, teachers, or career mentors taught them that has never left their hearts and minds.

These bits of wisdom inspired them to stay focused, compassionate, and driven, and continue to motivate them.

Scroll down to read the most influential advice used by some of the business world's top minds.

Julia Boorstin was told to say "yes" to every job opportunity that came her way — and then put in the work to make sure it's done right.

The CNBC correspondent joined Fortune magazine straight out of college and was anxious about working on projects she considered beyond her skill set. Her editor Andy Serwer taught her to simply say "yes" to every opportunity that came her way and do whatever was necessary to get it done.

Richard Branson's father taught him to always protect the downside in business.

When Branson, founder of Virgin Group, was 15, he wanted to leave school to start a magazine. His father told him that he could not begin until he sold enough advertising to cover the printing and paper costs, so that a failure would not rid him of funds. Branson used that same strategy as head of Virgin Records when he was ready to start his own airline.

Deepak Chopra learned how to use his "complete brain."

Chopra, the renowned leadership guru, adopted a new worldview from psychiatrist Dr. Dan Siegel. Siegel saw the brain as a tool that needs daily upkeep, and prescribed a "healthy mind platter" of sleep time, physical time, focus time, time in (self-reflection), down time, play time, and — most importantly — connecting time.

Since then, the winner's names are housed inside a golden envelope. We spoke with Friedland to find out more about the creation of the envelopes.

3 sets of 24 envelopes and 121 nominee cards will be made for this year’s Academy Awards.

Explore The Secret Underground Tunnels Of The World's Most-Notorious Drug Kingpin

Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman

For 13 years, Mexico's most powerful drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman lived on the run, staying well ahead of authorities. But it was one slipup — an associate of his being caught on a wiretap — that led to his capture on Feb. 22.

Guzman had a penchant for high-tech gadgetry to keep ahead of authorities, as AP reported on Wednesday. He utilized sophisticated communications equipment and scanners to detect surveillance. But it was his last ditch low-tech underground tunnel that helped him almost get away again.

With Mexican Marines surrounding his house, temporarily hampered by a steel-reinforced door, Guzman fled through a secret door beneath a bathtub into his tunnel network.

From AP:

Guzman fled south to Mazatlan. On his heels, a team of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents set up a base of operations with Mexican marines in the city, according to the current U.S. law-enforcement official.

Early Saturday morning, Guzman's reign came to an end without a shot fired. Marines closed the beachside road in front of the Miramar condominiums, a 10-story, pearl-colored building with white balconies overlooking the Pacific and a small pool in front.

With the Marines as guides, Reuters photographer Daniel Becerril shows us what those tunnels were like:

8 Off-Grid Gadgets You'll Need To Survive The Zombie Apocalypse

the walking dead prank nyc

Scientific supply company Optics Planet sells a survival kit for the zombie apocalypseIt's called the ZERO Kit (which stands for Zombie Extermination, Research, and Operations, of course) and if you want one, it'll set you back $24,000 — it contains plenty of weapons accessories, but it also has more conventional survival fare, like binoculars and utility knives.

People love zombies. You only have to look at TV shows like "The Walking Dead" to see what an imagined world filled with zombies should be like. Often in post-apocalyptic zombie tales, society teeters on failure and there's no electricity or running water. This means characters have to look to survive off-grid — gadgets are often solar-powered or require no power at all.

While zombies are science fiction, they present us with a fun thought experiment: what would it take to survive in a world where zombies are real and electricity isn't accessible? In the interest of preparing you for the worst, here's what you need to stay alive during the zombie apocalypse.

A shotgun for self-defense.

If we're imagining zombies are real for now, we want to have a way to protect ourselves from them. The shotgun is the weapon of choice for any self-respecting zombie hunter.

The power pot can boil water and generate electricity

The PowerPot harnesses the heat from a campfire to boil water and generate electricity that can be used to charge your phone via USB. The basic model generates 5 watts of electricity that can be used anywhere you like, and a new 10-watt model has recently been introduced.

Price: starting at $149

You'll obviously want a first aid kit.

There will almost certainly be injuries. Grab a first aid kits so you can patch yourself back up if need be. Amazon sells a fully-stocked first responder's kit for $98.

RANKED: The Best Smartphones In The World (VZ, T, DT, S)

motorola moto X home screen

Welcome to smartphone launch season.

Samsung has already announced its new flagship phone, and more from HTC and Nokia are reportedly on the way.

If you need to buy a new device now, here are the best ones.

Note: We update this list approximately once a month. Our rankings are based on a variety of factors including design, software and hardware features, content selection, carrier availability, and price. We only consider phones that are on sale in the U.S. at the time of publication. We've listed discounted prices carriers give for signing a contract at the time of publication. You can see February's smartphone rankings here.

#17 BlackBerry Q10

If you need a physical keyboard on your smartphone, the BlackBerry Q10 is the best phone you can buy. The phone doesn't have as many apps as the iPhone or Android phones, but that never seems to be a problem for BlackBerry users.

Click here for the BlackBerry Q10 review >>

Price: $0 on AT&T, $49.99 on Verizon, $0 down plus $22 per month for 24 months on T-Mobile, $149.99 on Sprint

#16 LG G Flex

LG released the first-ever curved screen phone, the G Flex, in the U.S. this year. The G Flex has a large, 6-inch curved screen and a self-healing backing that can repair minor scratches.

Unfortunately, LG had to make a few compromises to get that curved screen on the device. The resolution is a lot lower than Apple and Samsung phones, so images, text, and video look very grainy in comparison. LG's user interface for Android is also unattractive and buggy.

Click here for the LG G Flex review >>

Price: $299.99 on AT&T, $249.99 on Sprint. $0 down plus $28 per month for 24 months on T-Mobile.

#15 HTC One Max

The HTC One Max is the company's first phablet. It has a giant 5.9-inch screen and a fingerprint sensor that can unlock the phone and launch apps.

It's an attractive device made out of metal, but it's also extremely thick and heavy. That could be a turnoff for many people.

Price: $199.99 on Verizon, $249.99 on Sprint.

Miami Is Wall Street South — Here's Why

$
0
0

miamiMiami is attracting the LeBron James of Wall Street, the Dwyane Wade of Greenwich equity, and the Chris Bosh of Boston — financial titans who are relocating to pay less in taxes and maintain a luxury lifestyle with a glittering social scene.

It's already the 2nd most popular financial hub in the country after NYC, and The Miami Downtown Development Authority is doing everything it can to make itself attractive to bankers through an initiative called the DWNTWN campaign.

Lloyd Blankfein and Leon Black are rumored to have bought Miami condos recently, and the latest hotshot to move his business there is Mark Spitznagel, founder of hedge fund Universa Investments.

“Florida’s business-friendly policies ... offer the perfect environment for us as we expand,” said Spitznagel. “I would expect to see more firms like Universa voting with their feet and relocating to a more hospitable business and tax environment, especially as many local governments are trying to tighten their grip on businesses.”

The nightlife and beaches don't hurt either.

Miami is a financial gateway to the Americas.

While New York remains the undisputed center of the hedge-fund universe, there are approximately 70 hedge and private equity funds now headquartered in Florida.

Everest Capital, which manages an estimated $2.3 billion, is headquartered in Miami along with private-equity companies like Trivest and HIG Capital.

And with the growing Latino market, setting up shop in Miami means capitalizing on a growing Latin American client base.

Lower taxes mean more cash in your pocket for what matters.

In Florida, there are no individual income taxes, no estate taxes and no capital gains taxes.

So if you think about it, a hedge fund manager reporting $1 million in income can expect to pay only the federal government, whereas his counterparts living in New York City and Connecticut will fork over an extra $104,300 and $67,000 respectively.

Like taking advantage of Miami's many luxury shops.

Leading the nation in luxury car sales, Miami is an epicenter for extravagent and exotic cars.

Almost 14% of all cars sold in Florida are from luxury brands compared to 11% in New York.

Even more interesting, the 2013 median household income in Florida is less than New York, at $42,751 and $60,663 respectively.

Bhutan's Tiny Himalayan Airport Is One Of The Trickiest Places In The World To Land

bhutan paro airport monks plane

Bhutan, the tiny Himalayan kingdom tucked between India and China, is becoming a popular tourist destination, but its only international airport is surrounded by 18,000-foot mountains.

That airport is called Paro, and like the rest of the mostly Buddhist kingdom, it is nestled among the Himalayas, which make getting there a tricky proposition.

Partly due to an unusually short runway, takeoffs and landings are among the world's most difficult, and very few pilots are qualified to land there, according to the Daily Mail.

But for those who can get their hands on a tourist visa (not the easiest task) and handle their fear, a trip to Paro also offers breathtaking views of some of the world's most beautiful mountains, and one of the only ways to visit one of world's happiest countries.

The country held its first general election just a few years ago, after converting from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional one.

Yet it has preserved much of its traditional Buddhist culture, a big draw for the tourists who come from around the world to explore its majestic mountains and centuries-old monasteries.

The runway is short, with little space on either side.

The Google Maps satellite view shows it is nestled among the Himalaya Mountains.

One Google reviewer says there's one duty free shop and a small beverage counter, but "sweet and hospitable security and one of the most charming airport buildings ever."

The World's Most Spectacular University Buildings

Sharp Centre for Design, Copyright Andreina Schoeberlein, FlickrThe world's most innovative and architecturally impressive university buildings can be found on campuses from Tokyo to upstate New York.

International building database Emporis has just released a list of the most spectacular university buildings around the globe.

From a campus building in Belgium dating back to 1928 to Turino's Luigi Einaudi center, completed last year, these university buildings are worth a tour.

Biblioteca Central, home to 400,000 books at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, opened its doors in April 1956. The outside is covered in a tiled mosaic painted by Juan O'Gorman. Each wall represents a part of Mexico's past: pre-Hispanic, colonial, contemporary and the university's place in modern Mexico.

Bradfield Hall at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., is almost entirely windowless to give it the feeling of a medieval fort. It's the tallest building on its campus and opened in 1969. The building houses departments for crop and soil science, Earth and atmospheric sciences, plant breeding, and genetics.

The brand-new Campus Luigi Einaudi at Universita Degli Studi Di Torino in northwestern Italy houses facilities for 5,000 law and political science students. The design represents a modern interpretation of the traditional cloistered quadrangle.

The Embarrassing Roles Of Oscar Nominees Before They Were Famous

golden globes jennifer lawrence amy adams

Why do good people do bad things?

It takes a much smarter person to answer that on an existential level, but when it comes to making movies, the answer is simple: A paycheck's a paycheck.

Before they were working with people like Martin Scorsese and David O. Russell, this year's crop of Academy Awards nominees were struggling actors, clawing their way to a big break and surviving by taking whatever roles came their way, even if they were embarrassing.

Since you can't appreciate where you're going without remembering where you've been, we honor the starving artist days of this year's Oscar contenders with a look back at those cringe-worthy entries in their filmographies.

See 2014's Oscar nominees before they were famous »

1. Amy Adams starred in the sequel to "Cruel Intentions."

Now: A Best Supporting Actress nominee for American Hustle

Then: Six years before she landed her first Oscar nomination, Amy Adams was seducing family members and saying no to the kind of thing that made Farrah Abraham famous in the straight-to-video sequel to Cruel IntentionsShe's come a long way.

2. Matthew McConaughey played a name-less role on "Unsolved Mysteries."

Now: With critically acclaimed and complicated roles in things like Mud, Magic Mike, Killer Joe,and True Detective, the "McConaissance" is in full swing, and it might reach its peak if Dallas Buyers Club earns Mr. "Alright Alright Alright" his first Oscar.

Then: In the acting hierarchy, dramatic reenactments on daytime TV fall just above "extra" and just below "infomercial participant," but that didn't stop 1992 McConaughey from acting the hell out of an Unsolved Mysteries bit that required him to square off against a neighborhood pedophile (in short shorts no less).

3. Jennifer Lawrence appeared on an episode of "Monk."

Now: She could win Oscars in back-to-back years thanks to the nomination for her supporting role in American Hustle.

Then: Lawrence's first role ever was on an episode of Monk. While she had more than a minute of screen time, as "Mascot" her face was relegated to cameo status. Pestering Tony Shalhoub while dancing around in a full-body cougar costume was a baby step towards greatness.

Bonus: Lawrence's first major film role came with more lines and less mask-wearing, but was even more cringe-inducing. The Poker House was a bad look for everyone involved (especially Selma Blair, who should probably buy and burn every last DVD copy still in existence).

Warren Buffett published his 2013 annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders on Saturday.

In it, he bulleted six "fundamentals of investing."

Not only is Buffett the most successful investor in history. He also shares his wisdom in an approachable and entertaining manner.

We compiled a few of Buffett's best quotes from his TV appearances, newspaper op-eds, magazine interviews, and of course his annual letters.

Investing novices and experts alike can learn from the advice that the he has articulated through the years.

If we've missed any of your favorites, let us know in the comments.

Buying a stock is about more than just the price.

"It's far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price."

Source: Letter to shareholders, 1989

You don't have to be a genius to invest well.

"You don't need to be a rocket scientist. Investing is not a game where the guy with the 160 IQ beats the guy with 130 IQ."

Source: Warren Buffet Speaks, via msnbc.msn

But, master the basics.

"To invest successfully, you need not understand beta, efficient markets, modern portfolio theory, option pricing or emerging markets. You may, in fact, be better off knowing nothing of these. That, of course, is not the prevailing view at most business schools, whose finance curriculum tends to be dominated by such subjects. In our view, though, investment students need only two well-taught courses - How to Value a Business, and How to Think About Market Prices."
