The 14 Most Anticipated Movies At SXSW

0

cosmos

Seems like just two months ago we were knee deep in Sundance coverage, but already we’ve moved on to the next big thing in film festival coverage.

SXSW is the annual film/music/interactive extravaganza that draws film, music, and interactive (?) fans from all around the country to descend into Austin, TX for one hell of a good time.

We here at FSR come for the movies (and the food and the friends), and this year our team is four strong and ready to rock. And by rock we mean sit in theater seats of varying levels of comfort, enjoy the culinary wonderland that is Austin’s food scene, and hang out with other like-minded characters.

This year’s fest features a lot of titles we’re excited to devour with our eyes, but of the dozens of films we’ll be seeing this coming week we’ve narrowed down our top fourteen below. Neil Miller had to be talked out of putting The Raid 2 on here multiple times, Christopher Campbell moved outside his comfort zone to show interest in some narrative films, and Jack Giroux failed to realize that “anticipated” should really refer to movies he hasn’t seen yet.

Keep reading to see which fourteen films we’re anticipating most at SXSW 2014.

14 movies to watch for at SXSW >

1. "All Is By My Side," the Jimi Hendrix biopic starring André 3000.

This is the rare bio film that chooses a specific point history to say everything it needs to about its subject, Mr. Jimi Hendrix (Andre Benjamin).

There’s a scene that says everything about his childhood in a two minute phone conversation between Hendrix and his father. What most bio films take 30 minutes to say in act one, writer-director John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) expresses in mere minutes. The film avoids all of its genre tropes to tell a focused and compelling story. - Jack Giroux

2. "Among the Living" horror flick.

Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury‘s Inside is ont of the best horror films of the past decade thanks its combination of intense storyline and incredible affection for the red stuff, and while their follow-up, Livid, is a visually arresting misfire at best the duo remain talented and exciting filmmakers.

This is their third feature together, and its deceptively simple premise involving three boys witnessing a possible murder is ripe with possibility. Beatrice Dalle is back along for the ride, and we’re hoping it’s a return to beautiful, nightmarish form. – Rob Hunter

3. Neil deGrasse Tyson's "Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey."

If we disregard for a moment the fact that Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson will be present at the SXSW premiere of Cosmos for an extended Q&A session — something that may cause serious gasms in the nerd-sector — and focus on the fact that we’re excited to see Carl Sagan‘s legacy revived with a modern rendition of his show, that’s probably enough.

But did we mention the extended Q&A to go along with the premiere? Yes, that’s going to be worth sticking around for.

As part of South by’s newly expanded offering of television content, Cosmos is the headliner. How do we better understand our place in space and time? Science! That’s how. - Neil Miller

The 27 Coolest Cars At The Geneva Motor Show

Lamorghini Huracan LP 610-4 model

The press days are over at the Geneva Motor Show and the executives have gone home, so now it's time for the public to take a look.

For those who can make it through the mountains to get to the show, here are 27 cars you can't miss.

They include the outrageously powerful Koenigsegg One:1, the new Lamborghini Huracán, BMW's first front-wheel drive car, and the hybrid beast Porsche built to earn some glory at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The show is open to the public until March 16.

The new California T is powered by a turbocharged engine, the first time Ferrari has done that in decades. The fresh design will cut the car's fuel consumption and generate more power.

The all-new Huracán takes the place of the Gallardo, the most popular Lamborghini model ever. Powered by a 5.2 liter V10 engine that generates over 600 horsepower, it will run from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds, and to a top speed of 201 mph.

Volkswagen continues to go crazy for crossovers with the T-Roc concept. The Polo-sized ride has two doors, four-wheel drive, and a diesel engine that knocks out 180 brake horsepower.

Chef Thomas Keller Responds To The Damning Health Inspection Of His $310-A-Head Restaurant

per se kitchen thomas keller

This week, foodies were floored when one of New York's best restaurants — Per Se — received a "grade pending" rating after racking up enough points to earn it a "C" from the Department of Health.

Chef Thomas Keller's three Michelin-star restaurant in Columbus Circle earned a whopping 42 violation points in its latest health department inspection, including for "Tobacco use, eating, or drinking from open container in food preparation, food storage or dishwashing area observed," and "Hand washing facility not provided in or near food preparation area and toilet room."

It was particularly shocking considering the The New York Times declared it the best restaurant in New York in 2011, and customers typically drop $620 on a dinner for two.

Grub Street's Hugh Merwin points out, however, that the violations at Per Se don't tell the full story. The restaurant — which prides itself on showing customers its well-run, pristine kitchen — isn't necessarily dirty by any stretch of the imagination. Merwin writes:

It's difficult to glean any real information from either of those write-ups, or to identify what's really "wrong" in Per Se's kitchen. Someone was eating or smoking or drinking or possibly chewing tobacco somewhere in the kitchen? Was it the presence of a drink, or a drink without a lid that was the issue? Were the kitchen towels soiled, or were they just not being stored in sanitizing solution?

Per Se is appealing the inspection, hence the current "grade pending" sign.

Keller (who also helms the three-star Michelin restaurant French Laundry in California) responded to CNN: "We look forward to the opportunity to address the allegations with the Department of Health in the upcoming Oath Tribunal. At that time our final grade will be determined. As with all of our restaurants, we continue to maintain the highest standard at Per Se."

Thomas Keller CNN responseHe followed up on Twitter that the kitchen will continue to be open for diners:

But even with the bad health rating, the world-class restaurant won't be in danger from want of customers — just a tedious follow up with the Department of Health. As one diner told CNN, he wasn't nervous to dine at Per Se because he "know[s] Thomas Keller's reputation."

The home belongs to Stephen Rizzone, CEO and chairman of Pleasanton, Calif.-based tech company Energous Corp. which makes wireless routers.

Rizzone said that the solar panels provide about 95% of the home's power, though their appearance hasn't always been appreciated by the neighbors.

"The house gained some notoriety, good and bad," Rizzone said to the Wall Street Journal. "But we were able to work through that."

The 11,740-square-foot home sits on an amazing lot overlooking Newport Harbor.

The 14 Weirdest Things You Can Buy From Apple

lytro camera

Walking into an Apple store, you don't seen any junk lying around. Tables are free from clutter, but gadgets and accessories are generally kept on a specific wall or are only accessible to employees.

The same can't be said for Apple's online storefront.

The site's accessory section is filled to the brim with gizmos and gadgets from third-party companies that do all kinds of things, from sensors that you strap onto your finger to measure oxygen levels in your blood, to a basketball that has sensors and can tell you how to play better.

In many ways, it reminds us of Brookstone, but only featuring knick-knacks that happen to be compatible with your iPhone or iPad.

I don't think this $99 foosball case is what gamers meant when they said they wanted more-traditional controls for their iOS video games.

You can control the $369 Parrot AR.Drone from your iPhone at a distance of about 165 feet. There's even a camera onboard that lets you record 720p video directly to your phone or tablet.

12 Actors Who Should Rejuvenate Their Careers With TV Shows

0
0

Eddie Murphy

With the rise of quality cable programming and things like Netflix, no longer is television a second-class citizen in Hollywood.

In fact, TV's become a place for movie types to experiment, take chances, and reinvigorate their careers without feeling like they're slumming it.

Just look at Kevin Spacey's resurgence thanks to House of Cards or the love True Detective's getting. The question is: Who else could use the boost back atop the A-List with the help of a hit show? We have some suggestions.

1. Reese Witherspoon can act, she just needs "grittier material."

Coming off her Oscar win for Walk the Line in 2006, Reese Witherspoon was the hottest actress in the biz.

But she was unable to capitalize on the momentum, bogged down by forgettable films like Just Like Heaven, Water for Elephants, How Do You Know, Four Christmases, and This Means War.

Her turn in Mud though reminded the world that she's more than just a pretty face. She can act, especially if she's given some grittier material.

2. Edward Norton hasn't had a hit movie since 2003.

Do you realize the last movie to score above 75% on Rotten Tomatoes with Edward Norton in a lead role is 2003's 25th Hour?

It's been more than a decade since he's starred in anything worth talking about, and he's way too great an actor for that. Instead of being relegated to bit parts, we'd like to see Norton as the central character in a serialized cable show.

3. Winona Ryder could take on a new age range of roles.

Winona Ryder hasn't been given a decent part since Girl, Interrupted, and that's no way to treat someone who has Reality Bites, Heathers, Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands on her resume.

It's been so long that now she has the kind of life experience to open her up to an entirely new set of roles. She was one of the best things in Black Swan, but was criminally underutilized.

Cable needs some Winona in its life.

Here's Why There's A 'Huge Boom' In Men Getting Plastic Surgery

0
0

male plastic surgery

We live in a culture where youth and beauty are prized — even for men.

"Over the last three to five years, there's been a huge boom is men's aesthetic surgery," Dr. Douglas Steinbrech, a Manhattan-based plastic surgeon, told Business Insider. "Our practice has seven websites, one exclusively for men, and many of our patients now are male. It's a very big misconception that all patients are women."

National trends agree. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased by more than 106% between 1997 and 2012.

Dr. Steinbrech said that men want plastic surgery for two reasons: to look good and stay competitive in the job market. "Men get surgery as a key tool to help them succeed," he explained. "In a marketplace where looking  fit, younger, and more masculine is imperative, the better you look, the better your chances of ascending the corporate ladder."

Helping men advance in their careers is a powerful marketing tool, and Dr. Steinbrech mainly advertises male procedures this way. On his all-male plastic surgery website, he outlines four "types" of men that he says typically come in for surgery, and the best procedures for them. The first type identified by Dr. Steinbrech is the "male model," who he says wants jawline augmentation, "hi-def liposuction" to show off his abs, pectoral implants, and gluteal implants. "This guy wants a sharper jawline, and nice abs — really ripped and very defined abs," Dr. Steinbrech told us. "You take an average, good-looking kid, and you enhance his jaw, elongate his chin, enhance his cheekbones, and suddenly he looks like the cover of Vogue."

Then there's the "body builder," who has similar procedures as the male model, but wants to look more muscular. "A body builder want to go big," Dr. Steinbrech said. "Big chest, big glutes, but muscularly defined. They also have some of that fatty tissue around the breasts from steroids that we often remove as well [in a process known as Gynescomastia]."

The third type of man that Dr. Steinbrech identified as getting plastic surgery to enhance their career was the "CEO or board member.""These men are at the top of their career and they feel young and confident, but they're worried they don't look it," Dr. Steinbrech said. "I tell these men I want to leave a little bit of wrinkles — since wrinkles are sexy and trustworthy — and give them what I call the 'Forbes Facelift.'"

The so-called "Forbes Facelift" typically consists of a necklift, eyelift, jawline recontouring, and perhaps liposuction as well.

The only category that doesn't specifically reference a career is the "athletic dad.""As a play on the 'mommy makeovers' we now we have 'daddy do-overs,'" Dr. Steinbrech told us. "This is what the banker wants. He's married with kids, probably put on 15 pounds. He's in his 40s and he's thinking, 'Man, I used to look so good in college.'" These men typically go for jawline recontouring, liposuction, and a small eyelift.

Currently, the most common cosmetic procedures for men are liposuction, rhinoplasty (nose job), eyelid surgery, gynescomastia (removal of breast tissue), and ear shaping, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.top 5 male cosmetic surgery (1)

The list of the most popular minimally-invasive procedures for men is topped by Botox.top 5 male cosmetic minimally invasive

Dr. Steinbrech and his team shared some before and after images of the most common procedures their clients get with Business Insider. Keep reading to see the before and after results, how much they cost, and what recovery time is like.

Jaw Augmentation

jawline augmentation steinbrechJawline recontouring injects Juvederm (a hyaluronic acid) into the jaw and chin to make it more angular and strong. He also might choose to do the same thing on the cheek bones to augment facial structure and give more definition.

Recovery time: Less than 24 hours

Cost: $2,300-$3,800

Liposuction

liposuction steinbrechLiposuction (which Dr. Steinbrech refers to as "liposculpting") typically takes away fat from around the abdomen so as to better show off muscles and abs. The healing process may often involve drainage tubes, compression garments, and antibiotics.

Recovery time: 2 days (but should avoid strenuous activity for a month)

Cost: $2,700-$5,000

Pec Enhancement

pec implants steinbrechPectoral enhancements are the most common with the male models and body builders who make money with their physiques. Surgery requires general anesthesia and involves a small incision in the armpit. Unlike breast implants, these should feel firm to the touch, Dr. Steinbrech said.

Recovery time: 4-6 weeks

Cost: $6,500-$8,000

Gluteal Enhancement

glute implants steinbrechThe most common method of gluteal enhancement is fat transfer (extra fat from liposuction is used to make the glutes appear "perkier"), but silicone implants may also be used.

Recovery time: 4-6 weeks

Cost: $7,500-$10,000

Gynescomastia

breast tissue Gynescomastia steinbrechGynescomastia is most common for body builders, but is a surgery for anyone who has extra fatty tissue around their pectoral muscles. It's achieved by liposuction and/or by removing excess glandular tissue, and is currently one of the biggest trends in male plastic surgery, according to Dr. Steinbrech.

Recovery time: 2-3 days

Cost: $1,500 to $5,000

Neck Lift

neck lift steinbrechNeck lift surgery gets rid of any loose skin or fat in the chin, so that it helps the jaw stand out and gets rid of any "jowls." In this procedure, incisions are made around the ear lobe or behind the ears, and then the underlying muscles are tightened and excess fat is removed.

Recovery time: 5-7 days

Cost: $6,000 to $11,000

Lower and Upper Eye Lift

lower and upper eyelift steinbrechAn upper and lower eyelift will get rid of any puffiness or drooping skin around the eyes so that they look more awake. Known as a blepharoplasty, the procedure involves very minor incisions made in the natural eyelid creases.

Recovery time: 5-7 days

Cost: $4,500-$8,000

Forbes' annual "World's Billionaires List" is out for 2014 — and we've rounded up the richest in the financial and investments industries.

Some of these people will be familiar to you (i.e. Warren Buffett and George Soros) and some of them prefer to stay in the shadows, like Taiwan's Tsai Wan-Tsai (he's a huge name in Taiwanese finance).

According to the list, roughly two-thirds of the billionaires built their own fortunes, 13% inherited them and 21% have been adding on to fortunes they received.

That means you could probably still make it on the list yourself, right?

19 Things America Does Better Than The Rest Of The World

America may be far from perfect, but life here is pretty sweet.

A recent /r/AskReddit thread posed the question: What does America do best?

The outpouring of responses covered everything from food to patriotism, and were submitted by Reddit users based all around the globe. Here are some of their best responses.

1. Jazz And The Blues

"The Blues really changed the world and is pure American. Although I guess it was influenced by slave gospels. I'm a huge blues fan. BB King, Chuck Berry, and Robert Johnson all paved the way for rock and pop music of today." - WastedPotato

burger2. Food

"'France is the country of good food.' No, not really. France is the country of an expensive grilled cheese given a name you probably can't pronounce with a slice of tomato on it. ALL THE DIFFERENT FOOD, EVERYWHERE. And I'm not just talking fast food. I'm talking about everything." - Jhaturtle

3. Friendliness

"Default smiling. Buy a coffee, get a smile. Make random eye contact, get a smile. In most parts of the world, smiles are not as readily given out or are causes for suspicion." - cream-of-cow

"I find Americans are the most extroverted group of people. I've never met more forceful personalities, it's almost impossible to miss an American abroad. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, it's not rowdy or disruptive, it's just something about the mannerisms, like a complete abandonment of discretion replaced with the overwhelming compulsion to engage in conversation and introduce themselves, their reason for being here, their family history, their career and to compare seemingly random attributes around them to back home, while blissfully ignoring the palpable European disdain for being talked to while on public transport." - Didalectic

4. Guitars

"Virtually every single significant guitar ever made is American. Regardless of a band's nationality, the bands that don't use an American Fender, Gibson, Martin, Epiphone, Rickenbacker, PRS, etc... are few and far in between. With the exception of several British amplification companies, America has virtually every aspect of the guitar market covered." - StolenNachoRanger

5. Corn

Especially: "Turn[ing] corn into things that are not corn."  - lift_heavy64

6. Pride In Our Culture

"I was at a local brewery/grill a few months ago when the table next to me said to the waitress, 'Our friend here is from Germany, and he's never had hush puppies or sweet tea!' (we're in the South)…Our section of the restaurant went dead quiet. The waitress says, 'In that case, one order of hush puppies and tea, on the house.'
It's that pride and willingness (if not insistence) to share parts of our culture that we love." - pirateofspace

7. Porn

"I'm pretty sure America makes the highest quality porn in the world." - Bk7

Airheads candy8. Junk Food

"Here in The Netherlands, our junk food is decades behind the godly snacks and beverages that the USA offers. Besides how good it is, the variety that you have is so vast that I think anyone in the world would have something they like…Bless Americans for Reese's Pieces, Warheads, Airheads, Hot Cheetos, Fruit Rollups, Nerds and Hot Cheetos again." - TotolLies

9. Free Speech

"I know that free-speech battles are being continually fought in the US and that sometimes it seems like a never-ending battle. I also accept that there are all sorts of problems like free-speech on campuses, free-speech 'zones' and so on. Even so, recognize that you are still ahead of most of the world when it comes to the right to say what you want." - backtowriting

10. Cereal

"Variety of breakfast cereals and other processed foods. I was in Walmart with a bunch of foreigners and they were taking pictures of the cereal aisle to show everyone back home." - lo_dolly_lolita

11. Entertainment

"The U.S. is by far best in movies and TV series, something of which the influence on the world should not be underestimated." - Didalectic

"Cartoon adult-ish comedies. Futurama, South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, (apparently King of the Hill, I've never watched it) and of course the Simpsons. The Simpsons, taking all things into account, could very well claim to be the best TV show of all time." - nayimhittingalongone

12. Beef

"Nowhere else does as good steak as commonplace and as cheaply as America does." - sciazs

Celebration BU graduation university13. Higher Education

"Top students from across the world flock to America's universities for education in engineering, finance, math, medicine, law, and everything else. The smartest (and often richest) high school students in other countries frequently will move to a different country to go to Harvard, Princeton, and even highly regarded public universities like University of Wisconsin or Michigan. But it's extremely rare for top students in the US to leave the country for education elsewhere." - MichaelScarn5

14. The Military

"You guys have the most advanced military on the planet, and are willing to use it to protect other people as well as your own; be it against the NSDAP or modern terrorists. While many Europeans like to complain, the world is better for having America." - madwill101

"Military. I'm just sayin', if aliens invaded, America would put the world on it's back." - hammy831

15. Muscle Cars

"Cars with 650 horsepower under $60,000." - THE_GR8_MIKE

16. Being "Cool"

"If you are an American abroad, you would probably have a 90% chance of being regarded as cool just by opening your mouth and saying something. Especially if you are in Scandinavia as we LOVE to speak English (downside to this: you will never learn Swedish except maybe words like:, köttbullar, Systembolaget, kukhuvud, tunnbrödsrulle, kräftskiva and fan)." - wyldcat

17. Diversity

"I'm an international student studying in the US at one of its best engineering colleges, and the sheer level of diversity is insane! In one day I see guys and girls from India, China, Korea, Africa, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South America as well as most of the racially diverse groups here in the US, including whites, blacks, Mexicans and (sometimes) Native Americans. The fact that all of them live together in peace and harmony, and in a society where everyone is treated equally and is judged on their merit is truly phenomenal." - jkthe

"The United States of America is one country, but to me, as an outsider, it's like 50 different countries. I've only been in a handful of different states but it's AMAZING. The scenery changes, the people, the culture."  - Jhaturtle

"I've only been to a handful of states, but each one is like a different country. The cities are something to behold and feel truly different (something you don't get in Europe so much), not to mention the stunning landscape." - madwill101

19. Hope

"When other people ask me what I miss most about living in the USA I answer with all of the lesser ones above, the food, the TV, or the nature; but, I've never said: 'I miss being in a country which knows it is capable of greater things: that we will cure cancer and advance the sciences, that we will pursue corruption and combat poverty, that we will be the world's police to those who wish it harm and the world's shelter to those who have been harmed because that is our duty, that we will go back to the moon and then on to Mars, because our forefathers forged our greatness and our children compel us to utilize it."  - TheWanderingSuperman

The Geneva Motor Show opens to the public Thursday, and those who make the trip to Switzerland will be rewarded with the chance to see Lamborghini's recent work.

If you can't make it to the Geneva show, here's everything you need and want to know about the latest and maybe greatest Lamborghini supercar.

The Huracán succeeds the Gallardo, the most popular Lamborghini ever. Half of the cars Lamborghini has built in its 50-year history are Gallardos. Pictured is the last one ever built.

Lamborghini first told us about the Huracán in December, soon after the last Gallardo was built.

Its official reveal opened up the 2014 Geneva Motor Show this week.

Computers can make the impossible come to life — just watch any sci-fi movie with explosions in it to get an idea.

But they can also show us what the possible might look like. Consider the following architectural renderings.

Though they look like photographs, these images were created by people using little more than Photoshop and some 3D graphics software.

You can see all these and more over at CGTrader, but here are some of our favorites.

Artist Michael Feuerroth designed an attic apartment.

Alessandro Prodan says he spent time studying botany to get the trees in this picture just right.

Titled "Far Away From Home," this image is big and cinematic.

handshake young guys

Even though Pinterest is the fastest growing content sharing platform, some people still assume that it's only women using the service, and that they're just focusing on cupcake pictures and wedding planning.

Not even close to true.

Though Pinterest still has more women using it then men, more and more guys are turning to the social network to keep track of their lives in creative ways.

Pinterest wouldn't give us a number for the amount of dudes using the service, but said the the topics seeing explosive growth right now are the gender-neutral ones, like food, articles, and travel, and subcategories like CrossFit.

Of course, we're not trying to say that the following are examples of things that only guys would pin. Lots of women are pinning about the exact same topics – but you already knew they were on Pinterest.

Pinterest user Nick Cobler keeps track of his favorite angling spots (and, naturally, all his catches).

The Grill Masters board by Matt Adkins is jam-packed with quirky ideas and products.

There are a lot of boards on Pinterest centered around the idea of creating the perfect "man cave." This particular dream comes from user Erik Hansen.
