The 8 Digital Trends That Will Change The Future Of Advertising

$

Woman looking through magnifying glass

The digital advertising ecosystem is rapidly evolving these days, as marketers continue to adapt to new platforms, devices, and ad formats.

With all that's going on, it can sometimes be hard to keep track of new developments.

That's why we chose to shed some light on seven major trends we're following right now. We promise, they're definitely worth keeping an eye on.

More brands are getting into the publishing game.

In 2013, brands like Oreo and Dove won praise for drawing large internet audiences to content they created themselves and shared on social media platforms like YouTube and Twitter.

By doing so, they were able to reach consumers in a place where, if the content is good, brands can have their undivided attention rather than a momentary glance at a banner ad. Dove's parent company, Unilever, is planning to create a lot more of this sort of content in the coming years, according to a a recent report from the digital agency Huge.

Look for more brands to follow suit as they begin to discover the benefits of presenting their message directly to consumers, without interference from traditional media outlets. While creating content that is both relevant to the brand and enticing to consumers is a difficult task, those willing to invest in quality will be rewarded.

Digital video is exploding.

U.S. spending on online video ads increased by 44.5% this past year and will make another big jump in 2014, according to a recent report from digital forecaster eMarketer. In fact, eMarketer predicts U.S. digital video ad spend, which totaled $4.18 billion in 2013, will grow all the way to $12.27 billion in 2018.

There are several reasons for eMarketer's bullishness. For starters, wireless networks are becoming fast enough to reliably stream video to mobile devices, making video a more widespread alternative to the much-despised mobile banner ad.

Because these pre-roll video ads can capture more of a viewer's attention than static ad formats, advertisers are willing to pay more than twice as much for them.  As a result, publishers from The New York Times to Buzzfeed are investing time, manpower, and money to produce more videos and capitalize on the higher prices.

And so is mobile.

Nearly 30% of all web traffic is coming from smartphones and tablets, according to web tracking firm StatCounter, and as Business Insider's CEO and Editor in Chief Henry Blodget is fond of saying, "Money follows eyeballs."

U.S. mobile ad spending more than doubled from 2012 to 2013, and eMarketer predicts strong growth of more than 50% in 2014. While mobile marketers have for years been championing the idea of "the year of mobile," it appears their day has finally come.

shutterstock officeFast-growing image site Shutterstock has moved into some seriously upgraded digs in the Empire State Building.

A lot of data analysis went into choosing the ideal location for the company's new global headquarters, which had previously been housed in four separate, crowded floors in a building in the Financial District.

First, Shutterstock management looked at the commutes of their more than 300 New York employees to see which location would be most convenient for everyone. By moving to the Empire State Building, conveniently located by several transit hubs, they saved their employees an average of 3 minutes on their commute time.

Their analysis also involved looking at more than 50,000 hours of meetings over several months to see what room configuration would best suit their needs.

"It's been a huge improvement for many people here," Tracy Kim, VP of People Strategy and Operations at Shutterstock, told Business Insider. "The juxtaposition of this modern tech company in a classic building, the Empire State Building in New York, is really interesting."

We visited Shutterstock to see the new digs for ourselves.

The Shutterstock headquarters take up two floors of space in the Empire State Building. A boldly decorated reception room greets you as you exit the elevators.

Big screens showcase beautiful images and real-time social media feeds.

The photos on the screen are constantly changing, though they're all photos found on Shutterstock or Offset, their high-end photo brand.

The 15 Most Unlikely TV Actors-Turned-Movie Stars

need for speed

From Goldie Hawn to Jennifer Aniston, we've frequently seen our favorite TV stars grow up before our eyes and become world-famous after transitioning to film.

Some are simply destined for stardom. But there's another class of actors who, while always talented, weren't exactly predicted to do big things.

Click ahead to see which famous actors emerged from humble beginnings.

Surprising actors-turned-movie stars >

Aaron Paul went from "Big Love" and "Breaking Bad" to trying take over the box office with this weekend's "Need For Speed."

Not even Breaking Bad's most hardcore fans could've predicted Aaron Paul would become such a major star when the series first debuted in 2007.

He was just the skinny white kid from Big Love in wankster apparel. But Paul grew into the actor he is today on the show and, by the final episode, it was clear he had a serious future.

Jennifer Lawrence went from "The Bill Engvall Show" to back-to-back Oscar nominations.

At the time, it appeared The Bill Engvall Show would be sucked into oblivion upon cancellation, but something strange happened. The girl who played Engvall's daughter became one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood.

Credit Lawrence for choosing the path less taken. She won a demanding role as Ree Dolly in Winter's Bone a year after Engvall ended and earned her first Oscar nomination. Two more would follow, including a win for Silver Linings Playbook.

Before Michelle Williams starred in "Blue Valentine" and "Oz The Great And Powerful," she was part of the "Dawson's Creek" cast.

It's next to impossible to break the typecasting mold after appearing on a show like Dawson's Creek (just ask James Van Der Beek).

But Williams did it more successfully than any other actor. Katie Holmes was the one everyone would've picked to be a star, but it was Dawson's other love who would go on to win three Oscar nominations.

Dominique Ansel Has Officially Brought His SXSW Cookie And Milk Shots To NYC

cookie and milk shots dominique ansel

The man behind the Cronut has debuted his next big thing — the Chocolate Chip Cookie Milk Shots.

Dominique Ansel started serving his new warm Chocolate Chip Cookie Milk Shots at his Spring Street bakery today at 3 p.m. With only 200 snacks available and a limit of two per person, the line is snaking around the block.

According to Grub Street, the shots cost $3 each, and the bakery is working on a take-home pack of 8 for $25.

The snack features a buttery chocolate chip cookie molded into the shape of a shot glass that is said to be able to withstand the moisture from the milk.

And the milk is also special — full-fat and creamy, it's organic milk from an upstate Swede Farm that has been infused with vanilla and some sugar to give it a cold and sweet taste to go along with the cookie.

Ansel previewed the treats at a SXSW party in Austin, Texas last week, drawing a line that stretched for three blocks.

New York Post reporter Hailey Eber says the best way to eat them is "to be alternately sipping the milk, then nibbling down the cookie cup as the milk level lowers"— although feel free to throw the milk back immediately and chow down on the still-warm cookie glass.

And if you want more milk after you've finished devouring the cookie shot, Grub Street says you can ask for a milk chaser.

The 10 Best Spring Break Party Destinations

$
0
0

las vegasMarch is the unofficial month of spring break, which — at least to hundreds of thousands of college students across the nation — means it’s a 30-day stretch of time dedicated to partying, preferably in exotic locales around the world.

We’ve already given you the inside scoop on where to spend an awesome
alternative spring break, but if you’re looking to get the classic (read: raucous) spring break fix, here are the top ten spring break destinations for partying.

Dominican Republic

Home to party-friendly Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic is one of the most popular islands in the Caribbean for spring break. Located on the D.R.’s easternmost tip, Punta Cana is characterized by near-perfect weather, as well as dozens of all-inclusive mega-resorts ranging from cheap to chic. Spring breakers flock to these hotels, where highlights include unlimited booze, beachside games and contests, and swim-up bars.

Where to stay: Grand Palladium Punta Cana Resort & Spa

All rooms at the Punta Cana, part of a multi-mega-resort complex, feature in-room whirlpools, but the real draws are the clean white-sand beach, access to four free-form pools, and eight reservation-free restaurants with some of the D.R.’s best all-inclusive fare — a good value, if you don’t mind scrounging for a rogue lounge chair. With spontaneous dance parties and a disco that can stay bumping until the wee hours, it’s a great place to party.

Cancun

Cancun — with its beautiful sandy beaches and turquoise waters – is one of the world’s top beach destinations, and it also one of the most-visited spring break destinations on the planet. The Hotel Zone is where to go if you’re looking for all the college spring break staples; dozens of megaresorts line miles and miles of postcard-perfect beaches where guests lounge in the sun margarita in hand. Hotels here cater to spring breakers, hard partiers, young couples and rowdy groups with night-long parties, loud entertainment, cheap booze and all-inclusive plans.

Where to stay: Hotel Riu Cancun

In the heart of the Hotel Zone, Hotel Riu Cancun sits on a sprawling piece of beachfront that’s close to bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and shops. The all-inclusive 569-room resort offers three swimming pools, a buffet-style restaurant, as well as three themed restaurants, and a range of on-site activities that includes nightly live shows, tennis, windsurfing, and a nightclub. Rooms are a bit outdated, but most consider it a small tradeoff for the affordable prices.

Miami

Miami’s neon-lit South Beach (or “SoBe”) might be the sexiest beach town in America. Chic clubs with discerning bouncers draw the fashion-industry elite, the occasional celebrity, and plenty of 20-somethings ready to party. And fortunately for those on a budget, it’s not all glitz — cheap Cuban sandwich joints, fishbowl-size discount margaritas, and Bud Light-slinging dive bars peacefully coexist with the posh hotel lounges and famed fusion restaurants.

Where to stay: Catalina Hotel

Designed for randy 20-somethings who can rage until 4 a.m., the Catalina can be a godsend. It’s moderately priced, across from the beach, and in the heart of the fashionista bar scene. There are nice touches like Tempur-Pedic beds and a hip rooftop pool, but it’s certainly a raucous party hotel at heart.

The Right Way To Iron A Dress Shirt

$

shirt ironing board

I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen a man who’s wearing what would be a very dapper get-up, except it’s ruined by wrinkly clothes. I see this especially with young, single professional men who probably don’t have mom or a wife to iron their clothes for them and never learned this basic life skill for themselves.

The fact is a lot of grown men don’t know how to iron a shirt. It’s nothing to be ashamed of if you don’t know how. Growing up, dear old mom probably ironed your dress shirts whenever you needed one and now your wife does this chore.

But a man needs to be self-sufficient. He shouldn’t have to rely on somebody else to ensure that he looks presentable. He’s in charge of that. If an unexpected interview or date comes up, a man knows how to get ready and out the door looking like a million bucks.

Details matter when it comes to your appearance and making a good first impression. Wrinkles draw the eye of those you meet and make you look sloppy and out-of-sorts.

Having well-pressed clothing shows the world that you’re a man of discipline and order, a man who has his stuff together and understands that the details matter. And a crisp shirt really pulls together a handsome outfit. Throw on a well-ironed shirt, and you get a bit of confident pep in your step; it just feels good.

Ironing isn’t hard when you get the hang of it. You can get a shirt done in less than 5 minutes. And boom–you’re ready to take on the world.

Today we’re going to give you the ins and outs of fast, effective ironing. If you don’t really know how to iron a dress shirt, here’s your primer. And if you’re already pretty adept at this chore, you’ll probably find some great tips you never thought of before. So let’s get started by talking about the tools of the trade.

The necessary tools

1. Iron

How do you identify a quality iron? Look for a well built sole plate, high heat capacity and steam delivery system. You should also consider the iron's size and weight and if it needs to travel well.

To play on words, this is the soul of the iron.  You want something that is solid, smooth, and clean if buying used.  You’ll find sole plates made from solid steel, titanium coated, and cast iron with aluminum, to name three solid options.

Avoid new irons under $20, as this is where low cost manufacturers most often skimp on the product to keeps costs low.  A poor quality sole plate will not clean well and may have uneven heat distribution–which leads to shirts being damaged.

Most consumer irons range in power consumption from 420 watts (small travel irons) to 1800 watts (higher end models above $100).

The power consumption plays into the amount of heat produced by the iron, although there isn’t always a direct relationship as the size of the sole plate needing to be heated factors in as well. But generally speaking, a 1800 watt iron is going to be hotter than a 1200 watt one, and it will heat up faster.

Why the need for heat? Certain fabrics, cotton and linen being two of them, require high heat to reform their shape.

A hotter iron can cut ironing time in half, vs. one that forces you to pass and remain on the same part of the garment for 45 seconds. Also, steam production relies on the sole plate’s temperature and higher temps produce steadier steam.

You want steam as it breathes life into fabrics and the hot moisture enables the toughest wrinkles to smooth out with minimal work by more evenly distributing the heat through the garment fibers.

Steam irons under $20 often have their steam component built in as an afterthought and sputter and spit out water when you don’t want it.  Higher end models have 300+ holes that deliver a clean, uniform mist.

Depending on your needs you’ll want the best steam delivery system you can budget. Why? A good steam iron can be used indirectly on wools and other more delicate fabrics and save you thousands a year in pressing and dry cleaning costs in addition to what I mentioned above.

Size and weight do become issues for those who deal with arthritis or are sensitive to weight differences of a few pounds.  Thus expensive irons made from lightweight space-age materials are not necessarily better because they cost more; they simply are made for a different customer. Don’t always equate price with quality.

A special note on travel irons: For the sharp dressed road warrior a travel iron is a wise investment.

Although hotels normally have an iron and board available for guest use, this isn’t always the case, especially at hotels that are either budget or are trying to encourage use of their expensive in-house cleaning services.

Having your own iron enables you to use a device you’re familiar with and prepare your clothing on your schedule as you see fit.  No ironing board?  Grab a towel and throw it on a flat surface; it will do the job.

Personally I recommend Steamfast’s compact travel iron.  It is incredibly small, lightweight, hot, produces an decent amount of steam, and is value priced.

However, what impressed me most was the great customer service I recently received from this American business.  I was having mechanical problems (or so I thought, turns out I didn’t know how to use it properly) and thought it was going to be a hassle to exchange it as I had waited 8 months to report the problem.

Instead, I spoke with a very nice customer service rep who resolved my issue and within minutes shipped me a new one–no questions asked.  You have to love that!

2. Ironing board

You need something that’s sturdy and has a top that you’re comfortable ironing on. I advise you see what’s available for free as many people have an old one lying around, and then spend the money on a nice cover and pad.

You can also put a piece of aluminum foil under the ironing board cover. The idea here is to reflect the iron’s heat back on itself so you’re actually ironing from both sides at once. Be careful though as it will increase the speed in which you can burn the clothing.

3. Spray bottle

Do not re-use a container that housed a cleaning agent. You’ll use this spray bottle to disperse water evenly over your shirt before ironing in the case your iron is not equipped with a steam function or when you’re ironing in bulk (as I will show you).

It’s also handy for when you’re ironing a wrinkle–give the spot a spray and then iron out the wrinkle seconds later.

4. Water

You want to use water free of small dirt and high concentrations of calcium and magnesium, both common in hard water. Long term use can lead to iron damage and leave marks on dress shirt fabrics that are hard to remove.

However, you do not need to use distilled water as some mineral presence is good as it acts as a wetting agent and helps water better vaporize when it contacts the sole plate. Drinking water is perfect for most irons.

5. Light-colored cotton towel

A towel can be used as a ironing board pad, rolled and used inside sleeves as a makeshift sleeve-board, or simply to clean up excess water sprayed on the shirt.

6. Spray starch

I remember in the Marines using cans of spray starch in an effort to get the perfect “crisp” look. However, just as often I would overdue it and be dealing with flakes due to over starching or not letting it set in.

To use starch, understand it is best used in moderation and with a temperature setting of 6 or below (the highest setting can cause flaking). Too much and you can make a normally breathable cotton shirt feel like a synthetic plastic bag and cause more wrinkles when worn!

FYI, a man can make his own starch spray by dissolving one tablespoon of cornstarch in two cups water. Using a spray bottle (preferably not the water one–clearly mark it “spray starch”) you can then LIGHTLY mist the fabric a minute before ironing.

How to iron a shirt

1. Preparation

For these instructions I assume you are ironing a batch of five 100% cotton dress shirts with an iron setting of five to six (depending on your iron).

If you’re seeking a super crisp look, you’ll want to first turn the shirt inside out and iron the inside and then iron the outside of the shirt. This will add another two minutes onto the process, but will give you better results, especially on thicker cotton fabrics. If you use the aluminum foil trick though, you can skip this.

Read the shirt’s label. Really, you need to understand what type of fabric the shirt is made from before ironing it or you could possibly destroy it.  Most shirts are made from cotton or cotton blends and can withstand high temps, although polyester shirt fabrics are more fragile to heat.

If you’re unsure, start with a low setting such as 3 and then move up until the shirt starts to respond to the iron’s heat.  Note: Silk and wool shirts are not covered here.  Although it is possible to clean them yourself, you need to know what you’re doing.

You want the shirts to be moist (not soaking wet). This will enable you to dry iron without having to worry about your iron’s steam function. Ideally you have recently pulled the shirts from the washing machine.

If they are already dry, however, just take them and thoroughly mist them with the spray bottle. Once finished, place them in a plastic bag to better diffuse the moisture and prevent evaporation.

Next set up the ironing board near a power outlet that is close to the closet where you’ll be hanging everything immediately after ironing. Ensure the iron has water in it and then plug it in, set to the lowest heat setting you’ll need. Store all of your ironing equipment together, that way you’re never looking for anything when you need it quickly.

Within five minutes the iron should be ready and all the shirts moistened.  Pull the lightest weight shirt from the bag first, making sure it is evenly wet.  If not, spray on a bit more water.

2. Iron the collar first

Always start by ironing your dress shirt collar. This is the most visible part of a shirt as it frames the face, especially when worn with a  suit or sport jacket. In a pinch and when wearing a jacket, you can get away with ironing only your collar, the front area right below it, and your cuffs. Just don’t take off your jacket!

To iron the shirt collar, pop it up and start with the underside, slowly pressing the iron from one point to the other.

Ensure that it is thoroughly moist before starting, and if any wrinkles appear, press them to the bottom where they’ll be less visible. Next, flip the shirt over and repeat this process on the outside of the collar.Ironing 2

3. Iron the cuffs

As mentioned above, I iron the cuffs next as they receive a lot of attention when worn properly with a jacket.

To iron a shirt cuff, first unbutton it (to include the gauntlet button) and lay it out flat. First iron the inside of the cuff, and next the outside, moving all wrinkles from uneven fabric to the edges.

Carefully iron around the buttons, and even on the backside. Never iron over buttons (unless you place them over a towel or something with give) as they can leave a mark.

For French cuffs, open them fully and iron as above. I recommend you not press the edges of a French cuff–it steals the life and body from a smooth fold.Ironing 3

4. Iron the shirt front

Start with the side that has buttons and carefully work the iron point around the button area (never over the buttons).Ironing 4.1

Then move back up to the top of the shoulder and work your way down the shirt with the iron. Repeat on the other side, and if you have a placket, press the material under it with the iron point and then over the top.

It’s worth spending a bit more time on the front placket and areas near the collar as they receive a high percentage of visual attention.Ironing 4.2

5. Iron the shirt back

Laying the shirt flat on the board, I like to position one of the sleeve heads into the square edge of the ironing board. You then have half the back in prime position to be ironed, and only need to slide the shirt over to complete the other half.

Start at the top with the yoke (back shoulder area) and slowly slide the iron down.  If you have a center box pleat, you’ll have to spend a few seconds ironing around it–I prefer not to iron back in the pleat, as the time required for an area you don’t want to highlight isn’t worth the effort.Ironing 5

6. Iron the sleeves

I choose to iron sleeves last as of all the parts of the shirt, they can be ironed in the widest variety of ways and for most men are the trickiest part of the shirt.

Problems arise from the fact that unless you have a sleeve board, you’ll be ironing two layers of fabric. Thus the key to ironing sleeves is to be sure the fabric is flat and smooth BEFORE you apply the iron.

Take either sleeve by the seam and lay the whole sleeve (and most of the shirt) flat on the ironing board. If you can see the creases on the top of the sleeve from previous ironing, match it again so that you have a single crease line.

Start ironing at the top where the sleeve is sewn onto the shirt and work your way down to the cuff. Turn the sleeve over and iron, then repeat the process with the other sleeve.

If you don’t have a sleeve board and would rather your shirt sleeve not have a crease, insert a rolled-up towel into the sleeve. This will allow you to iron it without leaving a crease mark.

Inspect the shirt and spot iron where necessary. Finally, place the shirt on a hanger and in your closet.Ironing 6

Warnings when ironing

If you are not sure of the shirt’s fiber type, err on the side of caution and iron it with a lower setting. You can always increase the temperature, but you cannot fix heat damaged fabric.

Iron around buttons, never over them. Even if there is fabric laying over the button, as in the case of a pocket with under-buttons or a dress shirt with a hidden button down collar.  You can create a permanent impression that will ruin the look of the shirt.  Be sure to remove shirt stays as well.

Never iron a dirty shirt. You’ll set the stains, and it will be very difficult if not impossible to remove them.

If you use tap water in your iron, you’ll eventually have a build-up of mineral deposits. This will be most noticeable when your steam output comes to a crawl. To clean the reservoir, pour a solution of 1 part water, 1 part white vinegar into the water reservoir.

Heat the iron normally and let it steam for a few minutes before unplugging  and placing it sole plate down on a heat resistant dish that has room for the draining water. An hour later, drain and repeat with water. You can repeat the process if need be. Finally, rinse and refill with bottled drinking water or non-hard tap water.

This bucket list will take students all around their schools, into the depths of the library, and even outside the boundaries of campus. While some of these involve alcohol, it's no secret that college eventually just becomes an excuse to find different ways and places to drink (and most of us can legally drink by senior year).

So, here is the list what you have to do during your time in college. Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments below.

JK Rowling Reading Harry Potter

Sometimes a book is so good, it not only sticks with you long after you put it down, but it alters the way you view the world going forward.

On a recent Reddit thread, readers commented on this very phenomenon.

Asked about the most mind-blowing books they'd ever read, users brought up dystopian novels like "1984" and "The Handmaid's Tale." But books that engender hope for the human spirit like "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Kite Runner" also made the list.

Here are 25 of the most gripping books based on Reddit responses.

"The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry" by Jon Ronson

Jon Ronson's "Psychopath Test" digs into the history of psychopathy diagnosis and treatments, including drug-fueled therapy sessions in prison and attempts to understand serial killers.

An influential psychologist shares his theory with Ronson that many important business leaders and politicians are actually high-functioning psychopaths, which leads the author to turn the tables on the readers and make them question their own mental health.

While the style of the book garnered praise, it got mixed reviews for its lack of scientific depth. The Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathy made a statement saying some interviews in the book appeared exaggerated or fictionalized.

"1984" by George Orwell

George Orwell predicts a totalitarian future in "1984." Big Brother originated in this dystopian novel with ever-present government security and Thought Police, who prosecute citizens for subversive thoughts.

It follows Winston Smith through Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain. He engages in an intellectual rebellion against the Party, and undergoes torture and attempted re-education. The book critiques nationalism, censorship and surveillance. It also makes much of regulating language in order to regulate behavior.

"Cat's Cradle" by Kurt Vonnegut

"Cat's Cradle" is a book about writing. It follows John on his mission to write a book about the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. But quickly, the tale turns into a high-stakes adventure that revolves around stealing, selling and bartering a newly discovered isotope.

Vonnegut said he was inspired to write the book after working as a PR representative for General Electric, where he met scientists who were indifferent to the consequences of their discoveries.

14 US Housing Markets Struggling With Foreclosures

112,498 U.S. properties received foreclosure filings in February, according to RealtyTrac.

This was down 27% from a year ago and was the lowest monthly total since December 2006. In fact, one in every 1,170 U.S. homes received a foreclosure filing in February.

But the headline number can be misleading.

"Cold weather and a short month certainly contributed to a seasonal drop in foreclosure activity in February, but the reality is that new activity is no longer the biggest threat to the housing market when it comes to foreclosures," said Daren Blomquist, vice president at RealtyTrac said in a press release.

While certain housing markets are recovering, others are starting to see foreclosures pick up. We recently reported that U.S. foreclosure crisis appears to be shifting to the East coast.

"The biggest threat from foreclosures going forward is properties that have been lingering in the foreclosure process for years, many of them vacant with neither the distressed homeowner or the foreclosing lender taking responsibility for maintenance and upkeep of the home — or at the very least facilitating a sale to a new homeowner more likely to perform needed upkeep and maintenance," Blomquist said.

We drew on RealtyTrac's report to highlight the 14 metros with the highest foreclosure rates.

Note: The metros are ranked by foreclosure rate, i.e., one in every X homes received a foreclosure filing.

Here's Where The Highest Rollers Sleep At Atlantic City's Water Club Hotel [PHOTOS]

Atlantic City New Jersey Revel Casino Resort 1

Atlantic City's Water Club is nothing if not deserving of its name. Fountains abound, along with pools, spas, and saunas all within a heavy tropical atmosphere.

It feels like a resort, with guests enjoying palm trees poolside without ever leaving the building.

But there are parts of the Water Club  a high-end property attached to the behemoth Borgata Hotel & Casino  that most visitors will never see. The hotel's high-roller suites, called residences, are tucked neatly away on their own private floor, far above the pools and restaurants enjoyed by guests.

Up in the residences, there is a massive, private hot tub, 24-hour butler service, and a kitchen that serves meals delivered from any of the hotel's gourmet restaurants.

The only thing residence guests must leave their rooms for is the casino floor, because that's why they're here at the Water Club in the first place. The residences cannot be rented for any price and are given free of charge to the casino's biggest spenders.

That exclusivity is not a joke: The largest headliners to perform at the hotel will stay a couple floors below the Residences in beautiful, but far less well appointed rooms of their own.

The 2000-room Borgata and adjacent 800-room Water Club are hard to miss on Atlantic City's skyline.

When guests first enter the Borgata, the massive hotel and casino complex connected to the Water Club, they're met with this incredible glass sculpture hanging over their heads by artist Dale Chihuly.

The Water Club hotel is attached to the Borgata but has its own swanky lobby.

19 Things The Millionaire Next Door Won't Tell You

$

millionaireAlthough having a million bucks isn’t as impressive as it once was, it’s still nothing to sneeze at.

In fact, Reuters reports that in 2009 there are 7.8 million millionaires in the United States. That’s a lot of people and the odds are one or two of them are living near you.

Heck, one of them might even be your neighbor. In fact, the odds are very good that it is your neighbor.

But, Len, you don’t know my neighbor.  That guy doesn’t look anything like a millionaire.

Well, guess what? A millionaire who is truly financially savvy won't be easily recognizable.

1. He always spends less than he earns.  In fact his mantra is, over the long run, you’re better off if you strive to be anonymously rich rather than deceptively poor.

2. He knows that patience is a virtue. The odds are you won’t become a millionaire overnight.  If you’re like him, your wealth will be accumulated gradually by diligently saving your money over multiple decades.

3.  When you go to his modest three-bed two-bath house, you’re going to be drinking Folgers instead of Starbucks.  And if you need a lift, well, you’re going to get a ride in his ten-year-old economy sedan.  And if you think that makes him cheap, ask him if he cares.  (He doesn’t.)

4. He pays off his credit cards in full every month.  He’s smart enough to understand that if he can’t afford to pay cash for something, then he can’t afford it.

5. He realized early on that money does not buy happiness.  If you’re looking for nirvana, you need to focus on attaining financial freedom.

6. He never forgets that financial freedom is a state of mind that comes from being debt free.  Best of all, it can be attained regardless of your income level.

7. He knows that getting a second job not only increases the size of your bank account quicker but it also keeps you busy – and being busy makes it difficult to spend what you already have.

8. He understands that money is like a toddler; it is incapable of managing itself.  After all, you can’t expect your money to grow and mature as it should without some form of credible money management.

9. He’s a big believer in paying yourself first. Paying yourself first is an essential tenet of personal finance and a great way to build your savings and instill financial discipline.

10. Although it’s possible to get rich if you spend your life making a living doing something you don’t enjoy, he wonders why you do.  Life is too short.

11.  He knows that failing to plan is the same as planning to fail.  He also knows that the few millionaires that reached that milestone without a plan got there only because of dumb luck.   It’s not enough to simply declare that you want to be financially free.

12. When it came time to set his savings goals, he wasn’t afraid to think big.  Financial success demands that you have a vision that is significantly larger than you can currently deliver upon.

13. Over time, he found out that hard work can often help make up for a lot of financial mistakes – and you will make financial mistakes.

14. He realizes that stuff happens, that’s why you’re a fool if you don’t insure yourself against risk. Remember that the potential for bankruptcy is always just around the corner and can be triggered from multiple sources: the death of the family’s key bread winner, divorce, or disability that leads to a loss of work.

15. He understands that time is an ally of the young.  He was fortunate enough to begin saving in his twenties so he could take maximum advantage of the power of compounding interest on his nest egg.

16. He knows that you can’t spend what you don’t see.  You should use automatic paycheck deductions to build up your retirement and other savings accounts.  As your salary increases you can painlessly increase the size of those deductions.

17. Even though he has a job that he loves, he doesn’t have to work anymore because everything he owns is paid for – and has been for years.

18. He’s not impressed that you drive an over-priced luxury car and live in a McMansion that’s two sizes too big for your family of four.

19. After six months of asking, he finally quit waiting for you to return his pruning shears.  He broke down and bought himself a new pair last month.  There’s no hard feelings though; he can afford it.

So that’s it.  Now you know what your millionaire neighbor won’t tell you.

Here's How Far In Advance You Should Book A Flight

$

The airfare shopping site CheapAir.com monitored more than 4 million fares in 2013 to answer the age-old question: How far in advance should you book your plane ticket?

For the average domestic flight, booking 54 days in advance will offer the cheapest fare.

But CheapAir's CEO Jeff Klee told Business Insider that travelers should worry more about a window of time than an exact number of days. When the site studied the cost of a flight everywhere from 320 days to one day before departure, it found the prime window for purchasing a ticket sits between 29 and 104 days before takeoff. CheapAir 2013 Domestic Flights

"You should monitor prices actively in that period to get a sense of the market," Klee said. "When you see a good fare, grab it that day."

If the airfare drops even further in that prime window, CheapAir maintains a policy to refund travelers up to $100. He said airlines have designated between 15 and 20 different fares for the same seat on a flight, based on a variety of factors.

"The single biggest factor in a price increase is how full a flight is. You should also consider how many flights travel the route you're looking for," Klee added. "People are surprised how little mileage has to do with the calculation of airfare."

"The worst thing is to book a ticket too late, but the next worst thing is to book too early when multiple routes have yet to be planned, and you have fewer options to fly somewhere," he said.

At some points in the year, flying from Los Angeles to San Francisco costs more than flying from Los Angeles to London because fewer flights are offered on the first route. The fewer available options to fly to a certain place, the more expensive it will be to take that flight. Also, the fuller a plane gets, the more expensive the seats will become, Klee said.

For international flights, you'll want to purchase tickets even farther in advance. Travelers going to Africa should book the earliest, at 166 days in advance, while those heading to the South Pacific can book much closer to their departure, at an average of 70 days in advance.

14 TV Shows Likely To Get Cancelled After This Season

$

Dads show

It’s not easy to avoid the chopping block when it comes to primetime television.

Whether it’s a returning series or a new show, livelihood is purely a numbers game, and when the numbers go south, cancellation is not far behind.

14 shows about to get the axe »

TV by the Numbers runs a series of articles outlining which shows from the major networks are trending downwards using what it calls the “Renew/Cancel Index” — a ratio that takes into account a show’s 18-49 age group ratings relative to the performance of other shows. Per the site, the specifics behind the numbers are as follows:

“The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).”

In general, a score less than 1 puts a show at considerable risk of cancellation, while a score greater than 1 puts a show in safe territory. Shows approaching 2 on the scale are more or less untouchable — pretty much assured for an early renewal — while shows trending around 0.5 are generally in big, big trouble as networks decide what to cancel.

Using TV by the Numbers’ Renew/Cancel Index, here are the shows from each of the five major broadcast networks — ABC, Fox, CBS, NBC, and The CW — that seem destined for the chopping block.

1. "Betrayal" (ABC)

Of all the major networks, ABC’s lineup is looking likely to take the award for most cancellations this season. And following ABC’s three shows that have already been cancelled — Lucky 7, Killer Women, The Assets — no other show on the network comes in as low on the Renew/Cancel Index as Betrayal, which finished the season at 0.48.

A new drama that began airing September 29, Betrayal tells the story of photographer Sara Hanley. She begins an affair with Jack McAllister, a lawyer from a powerful family, and the series follows the complications that arise when a court case pits the two against one another. Luckily for Betrayal, the viewership numbers didn’t trend aggressively downwards, instead holding firm around 3 million, but the viewership for its finale — 3.31 million — doesn’t lead to much hope for a second season.

2. "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" (ABC)

Next on the chopping block at ABC is Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, which currently sits at 0.55 on TV by the Numbers’ index, nearly unchanged from its already precarious spot earlier in the fall. A spinoff of ABC’s popular Once Upon a Time, this series takes place in present-day Wonderland and is part of the same universe as the original show.

Unfortunately, the eight-episode season did not draw viewers in nearly as much as Once Upon a Time, showing a consistent decline through the first season. With four more episodes to go, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland’s most recent episode pulled in 3.27 million viewers, making it the second least-watched episode of the series and a far cry from the 5.82 million viewers who tuned in for the premiere in October.

3. "The Neighbors" (ABC)

The Neighbors scores a 0.59 on the index — slightly higher than where it was in the fall — and it appears increasingly unlikely that the comedy will be renewed for a third season. Now in its second season, The Neighbors is a sci-fi sitcom about a family that relocates to a gated community in New Jersey only to find that it is populated entirely by aliens awaiting instruction to return home. Viewer numbers have shown a distinct drop throughout the second season, with the most recent episode (on March 7) earning the lowest ratings of the entire series at 3.6 million.
