PHOTOS: An Airbnb Guest Held A Huge Party In This New York Penthouse And Trashed It

Airbnb NY Condo 03

Rachel Bassini had a horror story experience with Airbnb last month.

She rented her penthouse in New York's East Village to a man she thought was traveling with his family, but returned home to find that it had been used for a wild party and the place was completely trashed.

There was human feces, used condoms and other disgusting things all over her bathroom and furniture.

(Skip straight to the photos.)

And then, Airbnb gave her some confusing information when she asked about being covered by Airbnb's Host Guarantee.

Airbnb advertises that it will cover hosts for property damage up to a $1 million, via a program called the Host Guarantee. But when Bassini contacted Airbnb about it after the incident, a representative discouraged her from filing a claim, telling her she wouldn't be covered, she says.

The good news is that, after being contacted by Business Insider, the company did the right thing by her, and promised to cover the damages if Bassini sends in the necessary paperwork.

Airbnb sent us this statement:

Airbnb is built on a foundation of trust and respect and this conduct is unacceptable. We permanently banned the person who rented this space from using our site shortly after this incident occurred. Over 11 million guests have spent the night on Airbnb and problems don’t happen often, but when they do, we work hard to address them. We encourage hosts to submit documentation as quickly as possible so we can expedite our review, but we should have moved faster to ensure this case was properly evaluated. We’re working to reimburse the host for costs associated with this incident.

Here's what happened:

A guy named "Jeffrey" booked her condo through Airbnb for Feb. 15. Bassini had rented her condo out a few other times when she traveled via Airbnb and had good experiences.

Jeffrey had no reviews on Airbnb "but his profile was of him and his wife and young daughter — seemingly harmless," Bassini said. "Upon my return, I found feces covering the bathroom and couch, used condoms all over the bedroom, and chewed gum on the floors, walls, and couches, among other horrendous things."

Then she discovered Instagram pictures and videos showing a massive party in her house, wall-to-wall people and booze.

Jeffrey also failed to return her keys, she says, including special elevator security keys to her building and penthouse. She calculated she was out about $2,000.

Bassini called Airbnb on the phone Feb. 18 and was told the damages she experienced were not covered, she says.

"I had been informed by a customer service agent on the phone that the Host Guarantee only covered structural damage, not contents," she said. But that's not true. Airbnb does cover these kinds of damages, it tells Business Insider.

She then made a mistake of her own. She never filled out a claim.

"They told me, I think twice, to fill it out and I didn't do so because I had been told I wouldn't be covered," she explains.

Thinking Airbnb wouldn't reimburse her, she reached out to the guest directly, Jeffery, trying to get him to pay for the damages and return the keys. When messages to him via Airbnb began to bounce back, she contacted Airbnb again and was told that Jeffrey's account was suspended, pending an investigation.

She asked again about the host guarantee and was told this time that she wasn't covered because she failed to fill out the claim within 72 hours of the incident.

Airbnb then credited her $100 and told her, "Unfortunately this case has been closed and no further payouts will be possible."

After Business Insider began inquiring about Bassini's situation, Airbnb reversed that decision, reopened her case and promised to cover damages if she submits the proper paperwork, including the cost of the keys.

Also, to its credit, the company apologized in writing, sending Bassini an email:

"I am very sorry for the initial confusion with respect to whether these damages were covered under the Host Guarantee. The founding principle on which that program was founded is grounded in the belief that hosts should have peace of mind when booking with Airbnb."

Business Insider talked to "Jeffrey," who doesn't deny the party or the mess. He says he was contacted by Bassini and agreed to pay the cleaning bill.

He told us: "We had discussed that and she said she was going to hire cleaning services. I sent her an email asking her how does she want the payment to be sent for the cleaning services." He says once he hears from Bassini about the bill, he expects to remit payment and "be done with it."

This is a photo of how Bassini's New York penthouse usually looks.

Here's a view of the kitchen.

Here's the living room. Note the white couches.

If 15% of all Internet traffic is cat-related, then how much traffic is generated by cute animals on Instagram specifically?

Instagram can't break down the most-followed animal accounts as a certainty, but pointed us to this list of pets as being among Instagram's most famous.

The social network's most famous critters get hundreds of thousands of likes and followers. Many even have their own clothing lines — you can buy T shirts of them.

Norm, an adorable pug from outside Seattle, has almost 200,000 followers.

Pudge the cat is so famous that you can buy nail decals with his face on them.

(Seriously.)

Mr. Bagel the chinchilla uses his fame for good by reminding his 53,000 followers to adopt new pets from rescue shelters.

6 Heart-Wrenching Children's Drawings Of Malaysia Flight 370

Malaysia Airlines flight 370 disappeared more than a week ago, and investigators still don't have answers for the families of the missing passengers and crew.

Some are still holding out hope that their relatives are alive — after all, no wreckage from the plane has been found, so it could have landed somewhere intact.

In a show of support for the passengers and their families, people have been putting up artwork in a viewing gallery at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Some of the pictures appear to have been drawn by children.

malay3The artwork contains messages of hope — the one above shows the plane stuck in a tree with people climbing out of the windows, and another has the Bruno Mars lyrics to "Talking To The Moon" written on it:

I know you're somewhere out there ... Somewhere so far away ... At night when the stars light up my room ... I sit by myself talking to the moon ... Trying to get to you.

Here are a few more:

malay6malay5malay4malay2There were 239 people on board the plane when it vanished on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Investigators believe the plane is most likely in the south Indian Ocean, a body of water so vast and remote that a U.S. Navy commander said there probably "aren't enough ships and aircraft in the world" to search the entire area.

14 Movies That Used A Lot Less CGI Than You Think

aaron paul need for speed

If you headed to theaters this weekend to see "Need for Speed," the film included some crazy stunts.

Audiences saw a Ford Mustang jump three lanes of traffic in Detroit and get airlifted by a U.S. Army helicopter.

One thing you may not have realized was that the DreamWorks' film was made entirely without any computer-generated imagery, commonly known as "CGI."

Director Scott Waugh — a former stuntman — wanted to make the action look as real as possible.

“My philosophy has always been that you can’t break physics because if you do it hurts the story because then the characters don’t apply to physics either,” said Waugh

In Hollywood, while most films employ CGI, you may be surprised by the movies that opt out of using digital enhancements.

The weightlessness in "Apollo 13" was thanks to a military plane that recreated zero gravity.

When it came to achieving weightlessness on screen, Tom Hanks and the rest of the crew in 1995's "Apollo 13" had less help from Hollywood and more from NASA.

The cast and crew used NASA's "Vomit Comet," a Boeing 707 "that climbs to 30,000 ft. and then arcs into a steep dive, creating a 23-second period of weightlessness." Director Ron Howard liked it so much he put the set of the film right into the plane itself.

"If we’d had to do it with wires — if we really would’ve had to try to create the weightlessness with wires, I shudder to think what the movie would have looked like," said Howard.

Tom Cruise actually climbed the Burj Khalifa for "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

Even more astounding than Dubai's Burj Khalifa's height (2,722 feet) is that Tom Cruise actually scaled the upper levels of the building in "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

"When you’re on top and you look out, people are going to think it’s CG [computer-generated], and it’s not," Gregg Smrz, the film's stunt coordinator, told the L.A. Times.

While a green screen would have been a lot easier and safer, Cruise insisted on climbing with special harnesses and rigging about 1,700 feet off the ground (that's 250 feet higher than the Empire State Building) in order to pull off the seemingly impossible scene.

The face-melting ending from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was done using melting wax sculptures.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" won the 1981 Oscar for Best Visual Effects, but the iconic "face-melting" ending used nothing more than practical effects.

"The melting of Toht, the Nazi villain’s head in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' required an innovative approach," visual-effects artist Dennis Muren told Vanity Fair. "It was decided that the head would be sculpted in wax ... filmed at a speed slower than normal, high heat was applied and the head appears to melt rapidly revealing layers of skin, muscle, and bone when played back at normal speed."

In addition, the ghosts that float during the Lost Ark ceremony were silken puppets floating in a tank of water.

An Iowa Man Spent 3 Years Building The Mythical City From 'Lord Of The Rings' Out Of Matchsticks

Pat Acton, a former career counselor in central Iowa, spent some 1,000 hours a year between 2007 and 2010 building a matchstick model of the mythic Minas Tirith city from "Lord of the Rings." The finished replica contains 420,000 matchsticks and 23,000 small support wooden blocks. It stands over six feet tall in the Matchstick Marvels museum Acton founded.Minas Tirith Matchsticks 2"Number one is I've been a JRR Tolkien fan since I was a kid," Acton told Business Insider. "The movies reignited my interest in 'Lord of the Rings' and I wanted to build something iconic from the story."

The model includes hundreds of city buildings, the Citadel, the Tree of Gondor, and the White Tower of Ecthelion, all of which should excite LOTR fans.Minas Tirith Matchsticks 3Acton has built matchstick models for the past 23 years as a hobby, but after retirement he took on a three-year contract to construct models full time with Ripley's Believe It Or Not. He has about a year and a half left on that arrangement now.Minas Tirith Matchsticks 1"I used to buy all the matchsticks the grocery store had and cut the tips off myself," Acton said. "I was just interested in the pure wood. But it's time consuming to cut the tips. After about 10 years, my wife said, 'Why don't you contact the match makers and ask to buy them without the tips?'"Minas Tirith Matchsticks 4People buy matches so rarely these days that when Acton gets them, they're made-to-order. He uses U.S. wood matches like Fire Chief, Blue Tip and Diamond, and goes through a half-million match splints every year. Minas Tirith Matchsticks 5

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen are selling the Los Angeles mansion that cost them $40 million to build from scratch, TMZ reports.

They finished building the house less than a year ago.

But he's easily the league's biggest mainstream celebrity, and he has the lifestyle to back it up.

Brady earned $38 million last year, making him the 11th highest-paid athlete in the world.

A huge chunk of that came from a $30 million signing bonus he got from his new Patriots contract.

The Most Hipster Restaurants In 17 Cities Across America

Egg Slut, Los Angeles, Food TruckHipsters don't want your mainstream food establishments.

Give them organic kale, an upcycled wooden table, and local craft brews, and they're a happy bunch.

Hipster restaurants tend to prize anything local, organic, homemade, or vintage. They're also trendy and often pretentious. But of course the most telling sign of a hipster restaurant is that it's filled with hipsters.

We searched all over to find the most hipster restaurants in the U.S., judging by the localness, trendiness, and hipsterness of each place.

Know a place we missed? Tell us about it in the comments.

ATLANTA

Bocado
887 Howell Mill Road

Bocado emphasizes its culinary creativity, experimenting every season with fresh ingredients featured in their rotating menu. Bone marrow, which is very in right now, is done right at Bocado; enjoy it with a cold craft beer and take in the industrial, warehouse-esque atmosphere.

Miller Union
999 Brady Avenue

Miller Union specializes in farm-to-table delicacies, particularly their raved-over ice-cream sandwiches (made in-house). However, MU was recently featured in an episode of "The Layover" with Anthony Bourdain, and the uptick in popularity could drive hipsters out.

AUSTIN

Hillside Farmacy
1209 E. 11th Street

This restaurant and specialty grocery store carved out a place for itself in the old Hillside Drugstore building, hence the name. They serve comfort-food dishes, which invariably include kale, inside a dining room that features the old pharmacy's original cabinetry.

Lamberts
401 W. 2nd Street

What's Austin without barbecue? Or fancy barbecue, in Lamberts' case. Located in the restored historic Schneider Building, Lamberts prides itself on modern Texas cooking with specialties like the oak-smoked local chicken. Don't miss the nightly live music in the upstairs lounge.

BOSTON

Tres Gatos
470 Centre Street (Jamaica Plain)

Tres Gatos makes your feel right at home. Located inside a house on the outskirts of Boston, the restaurant has a dining room that feels more like a living room, and plates tapas-style meals that are great for sharing. On your way out, hit up the back room, which doubles as a book-and-record store.

Unbelievable Photos Capture The Disappearing Art Of Hunting Honey In Nepal's Cliffs

In the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal, the Gurung people practice an ancient tradition. Twice a year, the Gurung men gather around the cliffs that are home to the world’s largest honeybee and, with 200-foot ladders and long poles, they harvest the bee’s wild honey.

It’s a fascinating event, one that documentary photographer Andrew Newey knew he had to see. This past year, Newey stayed with the Gurung tribe in a hilltop village, photographing their culture and attending the annual autumn honey hunt.

The hunt that Newey witnessed was six weeks later than usual due to a dwindling bee population. Any further decreases in the population could put the entire ecosystem of the region in jeopardy. Without intervention, the honey hunt could soon be a thing of the past.

But while it's here Newey snapped and shared some photos from the hunt. You can check out the rest at his website, where he sells fine-art prints from the project. He also shares photos from new projects on his Facebook page.

Take a look at the honey hunt:

Before a hunt can commence the honey hunters are required to perform a ceremony to placate the cliff gods. This involves sacrificing a sheep and offering flowers, fruits, and rice, and praying to the cliff gods to ensure a safe hunt.01When they reach the cliffs, the hunters use smoke to draw the bees out of their nest.02

The honey hunter clings precariously to the rope ladder, while he waits for the rising smoke to drive the bees out of the nests.

05

Most of the nests are located on steep inaccessible, south-west facing cliffs to avoid predators and for increased exposure to direct sunlight.

03Using precision and skills mastered over many years, the "cutter" jousts tentatively at a bee's nest with a sharpened stick known as a "tango."04

One of the Gurung men watches from the base of the cliff as the cutter repositions himself on the rope ladder 200 feet above.06As the honey hunter descends the rope ladder, the blood, blisters, and bee stings that are synonymous with this treacherous tradition become visible.07After a 3 hour trek back up to the village, carrying approximately 20kg of honey, a hunter enjoys a hard earned piece of honeycomb by the fire.09The honey is divided up among the villagers and one of the first uses is for a cup of honey tea.10

PRESENTING: The Secret Trading Strategy From The 1930s That Hedge Funders Don't Want You To Know About

$
0
0

chicago board traders crash"The large operator does not, as a rule, go into a campaign unless he sees in prospect a movement of from 10 to 50 points. Livermore once told me he never touched anything unless there were at least 10 points in it according to his calculations."

So writes Richard Wyckoff, the legendary trader who in the 1930s wrote a manifesto that gained him a cult following on Wall Street.

His 1931 book, "The Richard D. Wyckoff Method of Trading and Investing in Stocks – A Course of Instruction in Stock Market Science and Technique," is out of print and somewhat difficult to find these days (not impossible), but even in 2014, hedge fund managers still swear by it.

One of the key takeaways from the book is that if you want to succeed, you have to learn to recognize the professionals and understand what they are doing. That's what those who follow Wyckoff do — they watch the large operators.

Wyckoff walks us through the process of how a large operator will manipulate a stock up or down — so that next time one sees it unfolding on the screen before his or her own eyes, he or she can react accordingly.

This, you could say, is real technical analysis ...

First, some context: trading is a lot like any other merchandising business, and liquidity is important

Wyckoff writes, "When you have learned to take a wholly impartial viewpoint, unbiased by news, gossip, opinions and your own prejudices, you will realize that the stock market is like any other merchandising business.

"Those who understand it buy only when prices are low with the idea of selling when they are high; and they operate only in the stocks or commodities which they can move best so they may secure the highest possible rate of turnover of inventories."

Source: Wyckoff (1937)

It takes a while for a pro to accumulate a position in advance of a big move – buying too many shares at once would cause the price to rise too quickly

"The preparation of an important move in the market takes a considerable time. A large operator or investor acting singly cannot often, in a single day's session, buy 25,000 to 100,000 shares of stock without putting the price up too much. Instead, he takes days, weeks or months in which to accumulate his line in one or many stocks."

Source: Wyckoff (1937)

Instead, here's how he sets it up: first, he'll "shake out" the little guys by forcing the stock lower in order to get a better price

"He prefers to do this while the market is weak, dull, inactive and depressed. To the extent that they are able, he, and the other interests with whom he works, bring about the very conditions which are most favorable for accumulation of stocks at low prices...

"When he wishes to accumulate a line, he raids the market for that stock, makes it look very weak, and gives it the appearance of heavy liquidation by sending in selling orders through a great number of brokers."

Source: Wyckoff (1937)

new htc one leaked with old htc one

HTC may be in a bit of a slump, but it still makes some of the best smartphones you can buy.

Its current flagship, the HTC One, is widely considered to be the best Android phone on the market. On March 25, HTC will announce a new version of the phone.

Even though we're about a week away from the announcement, there have been tons of leaks over the last few months. In fact, we know a lot about the phone even without any official word from HTC.

It will have a well-designed metal body, just like the current HTC One.

HTC redesigned the software with a "flatter" look, similar to the design on the Windows Phone and iPhone operating systems.

The screen will be slightly bigger than before, at either 5 or 5.1 inches. (The new model is on the left.) Compare that with the 4-inch iPhone 5S.

Francois Payard is undoubtedly one of the best pastry chefs in the world.

The French chef is particularly renowned for his light-as-air, cream-filled macarons, a traditional French sweet that's taken New York City by storm in the last couple of years.

He's also the force behind Macaron Day NYC, which is holding its fifth annual celebration today, March 20. Bakeries around the city will offer free macaron samples, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit City Harvest.

The Chef invited us to the Francois Payard Bakery in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, where he took us through a step-by-step guide on how he makes his world famous macarons.

1.) Here are all the ingredients you need: heavy cream, sugar, corn starch, white chocolate, pumpkin, Chinese five-spice, cinnamon, butter, water, almond flour, confectioner's sugar, egg white. To start on the ganache, add the Chinese five-spice and cinnamon to the heavy cream.

2.) Mix the spices into the heavy cream and bring the mixture to a boil.

3.) Mix the corn starch and the sugar together, 4.) Once the cream mixture is boiling, pour a little bit of the mixture into the corn starch/sugar, 5.) Mix well making sure there are no lumps, 6.) Pour the corn starch/sugar/cream back into the heavy cream mixture and mix well while cooking further.

We Went To The Famous 'Power Breakfast' Where Wall Street's Big Shots Spend A Fortune On Eggs And Coffee

Power Breakfast at the Regency

In the 1970s, New York City was on the decline. Crime was up, graffiti was everywhere, and the city was broke.

To figure out how to solve these problems, then Loews Corporation CEO Bob Tisch invited business leaders for breakfast at the Tisch family's hotel, the Loews Regency.

That's how New York's most famous Power Breakfast was born.

The tradition lives on today with the biggest names in business, finance, and politics dining there each day.

Last year, Loews Regency's entire dining room and lobby were redone to give it a new feel.

We had breakfast there Thursday morning. The updated place has a more modern and sleeker appearance compared to the old red velvet booths.

You can still expect to pay a fortune for eggs, toast, and coffee, though. That hasn't changed.

Loews Regency is on Park Avenue and 61st Street. It's near what we like to refer to as Wall Street North, where banks like JPMorgan and UBS are located along with a number of hedge funds and private equity shops.

When you walk in, the dining room is on your left.

elvis beverly hills home

Just over a year after he bought Elvis Presley's old Beverly Hills mansion for $9.8 million, Hard Rock Cafe founder Peter Morton has flipped the property for a tidy profit, according to real estate blogger The Real Estalker.

The home reportedly sold off-the-market to a corporate entity for $14.5 million. Morton was rumored to be tearing down the historic home, but it seems that those plans never panned out.

The home, which has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and spans 5,367 square feet, sold to Morton in December 2012 for significantly less than the initial $12.995 million asking price.

9 Weird Things Highly Successful People Do To Be More Creative

marissa mayerIf you want to be successful, you may need to get a little weird.

According to Harvard psychologist Shelley Carson, eccentric people tend to be more creative because of something called "cognitive disinhibition." Basically, creative folks have less of a filter on their thoughts and actions, which makes them more likely to do things that don’t follow the norms of behavior.

Looking at the lives of immensely successful people, it becomes clear that strangeness has its benefits. From Marissa Mayer's eccentric sleeping schedule to Ludwig van Beethoven's affinity for composing in the bathtub, here's a look some weird habits that have fueled success.

Yoshiro Nakamatsu would starve his brain of oxygen to get big ideas.

At 85, Nakamatsu is one of Japan's greatest inventors. He patented the floppy disk back in 1952 and has racked up 3,300 patents. He's the father of the karaoke machine, the sauce pump, the taxicab meter, and the digital watch.

To feed his inventiveness, he likes to push his brain and body to the limit. He regularly goes swimming and holds his head underwater to the point of nearly drowning.

“To starve the brain of oxygen,” he once explained,“you must dive deep and allow the water pressure to deprive the brain of blood. Zero-point-five seconds before death, I visualize an invention.”

Then he jots down his inspiration on an underwater notepad and heads back to the surface.

Jonathan Franzen works with a blindfold to keep his concentration.

In an era of 140-character messages, Franzen composes serious fiction. His books "The Corrections" and "Freedom" capture the endemic weirdness of American families.

But to write his 500-page novels, Franzen goes beyond just boycotting social media. He blocks out all sensory stimuli. As the New York Times reports, he writes with earplugs, earmuffs, and a blindfold when he really needs to concentrate.

''You can always find the 'home' keys on your computer,'' he said. ''They have little raised bumps.''

Ludwig van Beethoven developed his ideas in the bathroom.

Though he famously went deaf, Beethoven became one of the world's most influential composers with works such as "Moonlight Sonata."

Surprisingly, baths were a part of his workflow.

His student and secretary Anton Schindler wrote that the composer would stand at "his washstand and pour large pitchers of water over his hands, bellowing up and down the scale or sometimes humming loudly to himself."

Then he'd stride around the room rolling his eyes, writing down notes, and continue pouring water and singing.

"These were moments of deep meditation," Schindler said, "to which no one could have objected."

While the splashing annoyed his neighbors, Beethoven was onto something: We get our best ideas in the shower
