Earth is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind place.

This is something we may forget, except when we're reminded on April 22, Earth Day.

To celebrate the natural world, we've rounded up some of the most beautiful and mesmerizing pictures of our home planet from Reuters.

Hopefully these images make you appreciate Earth and how important it is to continue to protect and preserve our environment.

The Best Candidates For Earth 2.0

Our planet is being destroyed

It is only a matter of time before we will need a new rock to call home.

Fortunately, there are plenty of planets beyond our solar system that are similar in size to Earth and circle stars like our sun.

These planets are known to exist in the "habitable zone," a region that is not too hot or too cold, but just right to support liquid water, a key ingredient for life as we know it to flourish.

The Planetary Habitability Laboratory, maintained by researchers at the University of Puerto Rico, keeps a list of these Earth-like candidates.

The lab has ranked planets in order of their similarity to Earth, taking size, mass, and distance from their host stars into consideration.

Although we are still working on some kind of vehicle to get to these planets (that would probably require going faster than the speed of light), here are some good destinations to keep in mind for the future — when either we ruin Earth or before an incoming rock from space ruins us

11. Kepler-69c

Kepler-69c belongs to a two-planet system located about 2,700 light-years from Earth.

It's about 70% larger than the size of Earth and orbits its sun-like star every 242 days, which is similar to the orbit of Venus around our sun.

Scientists are not sure what Kepler-69c is made of yet, so travelers should be prepared for anything.

10. Gliese-581d

Gliese-581d is one of five planets to be discovered orbiting red dwarf star Gliese 581. It is bigger than 581g, with a mass at least seven times Earth's and twice as big in size.

The planet orbits on the outer edge of the habitable zone and could be warm enough to support clouds, oceans, and rain.

9. HD-40307 g

HD 40307 g is one of six planets to orbit around a star called HD 40307, which is 42 light-years away from Earth.

Although the planet is at least seven times the mass of Earth, scientists believe it could have an Earth-like climate because it orbits its parent star at a distance that is similar to that of Earth around our sun.

The planet is far enough away from HD 40307 that it is not tidally locked, meaning it rotates on an axis and does not always show the same face to its star, and each hemisphere has a proper daytime and nighttime.

The 9 Highest Paid Executives In Media

bob iger walt disney company

How rich is Hollywood? Richer and richer, at the top anyway.

The media industry's top executives reaped the benefits of a strong 2013 when companies like Fox, Disney and CBS all saw their stocks climb by double digits.

In TheWrap‘s annual look at executive compensation (did someone say over-compensation?) Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer earned a stunning 97 percent increase in compensation to $12.6 million while Executive Chairman Sumner Redstone took home a jaw-dropping $93.4 million, driven by a similar pay boost at both his companies, Viacom and CBS.

Check out the list here >

Redstone's chief executives at each company, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman and CBS CEO Les Moonves, both enjoyed healthy pay increases as well.

“Sumner has paid Philippe and Les Moonves exorbitant amounts, and done it on the basis of paying ‘above average,'” Steven M. Davidoff, a professor at Ohio State University's Michael E. Moritz College of Law told TheWrap. ”But every year they move the average higher. It's a classic case study in excessive executive compensation.”

See All  TheWrap Compensation Surveys: 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012

The disparity between media compensation and the high growth industry of technology remains vast, with the latter placing greater emphasis on a company's financial performance in determining compensation. Apple's Tim Cook, the CEO of a company worth more than Lionsgate, Viacom and CBS combined, earned $4.2 million, a 2 percent raise over the prior year. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took a pay cut in the same year Facebook skyrocketed, making less than $1 million.

Executives like Cook, Zuckerberg and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings make their money by cashing stock options. Zuckerberg made $2.3 billion in 2012 by doing just that.

The link between performance and pay is not as clear in Hollywood. In Feltheimer's case, his company's stock soared with the blockbuster successes of “Hunger Games” and TV sales. Though earnings at Viacom rose in 2013, revenue dropped by one percent.

Viacom's share price has more than tripled over the past few years, but family control over the company also permits Redstone to continue to line his and his executives’ pockets. Dauman earned a $16.9 million cash bonus in 2013.

“In Silicon Valley we're still strongly in the ethic of you work for the upside,” technology forecaster Paul Saffo told TheWrap. “The traditional model here is an options based one, without a doubt. It comes out of the whole venture capital model. The model is that a company's founders provide sweat equity and capital markets provide the money.”

9. Mark Zuckerberg, "Facebook" Chairman & CEO ($650K)

Facebook CEO and Co-Founder Mark Zuckerberg earned $651,165 in 2013, down from $2 million dollars in 2012. His base salary in 2013 dropped to the ceremonial $1.

Of course, Zuckerberg, like many who made their fortune in start-ups, carries the bulk in his money in stock options. In 2013, Zuckerberg exercised a reported $3.3 billion worth of those. So don't worry, his Facebook Status is still “Filthy rich.”

8. Tim Cook, "Apple" CEO ($4.2M)

This might seem like a small pay day for the CEO of one of the world's most valuable companies, but most top Apple executives earn money through stock that they cash out later.

Apple's stock has taken a beating over the last year and a half, as the company has not released a game-changing product since the iPad. That was only four years ago.

Cook did receive fewer stock awards this year as a result of the company's poor performance, but he's still banking plenty.

7. Jon Feltheimer, "Lionsgate" CEO ($12.6M)

Jon Feltheimer's compensation doubled to $12.6 million, a 97 percent gain in a year Lionsgate enjoyed success from “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” franchises and TV sales. His package included $1.3 million in salary, $6 million in bonuses, $3.6 million in stock awards, $1.5 million in non-equity incentives, along with less material amounts in other compensation.

Lionsgate shares jumped 70 percent in the fiscal year that ended in March 2013, justifying the hefty pay increase.

The CEO and the company are enjoying the financial boon came from TV shows including “Nashville,” the early repayment of the Summit Entertainment term loan, and the performance of ”Hunger Games” ($690 million in box office).

Aereo, a service that lets you stream live broadcast networks like NBC, CBS, and ABC, is the focus of a big Supreme Court case today that could determine the future of TV.

The networks are suing Aereo, claiming it violates copyright laws. If the networks win the case, Aereo will likely have to shut down.

What is Aereo and how does it work?

The company assigns each subscriber an antenna that can access programming broadcast for free over the air.

The antennas look like this. They're stored in Aereo's server centers in the local markets Aereo serves:

'MAD MEN' vs. REALITY: Compare Don Draper's Ads With Those That Actually Ran In The 1960s

kodak-carousel-madmen

One of the most exciting things about "Mad Men" is seeing the creative process Don Draper and his team go through to come up with the ad campaigns that determine the very fate of Sterling Cooper & Partners.

Throughout the show's six seasons, these campaigns have featured major brands like Playtex and American Airlines.

Despite the best efforts of Don Draper, Peggy Olson, and the rest of the team, however, their ads are often not much better than the ads their fictional clients were running in real life during the '60s. Sometimes, in fact, Sterling Cooper's ads were much worse.

Take a look and judge for yourself ...

Don Draper's Season 1 pitch for the Kodak Carousel remains one of the show's most poignant moments.

The real first ad for the Carousel, which debuted in 1962, wasn't as high-minded as Draper's, but it did explain what the product does.

Sterling Cooper's ad for Samsonite plays on the fact that nobody likes an empty suitcase.

These Are The Oldest Living Things On Earth

01_Sussman_Baobab_pafuri_0707_1335_1068px

There are living things on the Earth, both plants and animals, that have survived tens of thousands of years of slow and often violent change in the world. Yet, despite their seeming permanence and immortality, these ancient living things could soon disappear, if humans don't intervene to protect them.

That is the contention of Brooklyn photographer and conceptual artist Rachel Sussman, who has spent a decade finding and documenting the oldest living things in the world.

Beginning with "Year Zero" or the beginning of the current era/AD, Sussman looked backward to find continuously living plants and organisms that are older than 2000 years old. In the process, she has worked with more than 30 scientists to identify a master list of living things that need to be documented before they disappear. The project has seen her travel from the far reaches of Antarctica for a barely documented species of moss to Siberia to document a half-million year-old colony of bacteria — Actinobacteria— that live in the permafrost.

When asked how many of the plants and organisms she documented were in danger, Sussman didn't hesitate.

"All of them," she told Business Insider. "We're past the 11th hour."

In just the last five years, two of the 30 subjects that Sussman documented with her photographs have disappeared, both because of direct human interference. The first was a 13,000-year-old underground baobab forest in Pretoria, South Africa that was bulldozed to make way for a road.

A 3,500 year-old Cypress tree in Orlando, Florida nicknamed "The Senator" was burned down by a woman smoking meth in the hollow of the tree.

Most of the plants are difficult to find. Many are located in harsh environments that are difficult to travel to, while the locations of others are kept secret to protect them from an onslaught of tourists who might not respect the fragility of the aging plants.

Sussman shared some photos from the project with us here, but you can check out the rest in her new book, The Oldest Living Things In The World.

This 9,950-year-old Spruce tree is the oldest single tree in the world. Located on a mountain in Sweden, the tree's root system has stayed alive for so long because it can sprout a new trunk when an old one dies. Sussman calls the tree "a portrait of climate change" because of how it has changed in recent years. For the majority of its lifespan, the tree has appeared in a "shrub formation," but over the last century it has begun to grow directly up like a traditional tree. The new growth seems to have been caused by higher temperatures in the area.

02_Sussman_Spruce_Sweden_1068pxThis 5,500-year-old Antarctic Moss was incredibly hard to find. Researchers had last seen it 25 years prior, but due to the imprecision of navigating the area before GPS, it was ultimately lost. Sussman worked with the Polar Geospatial Center to get satellite maps of the area that helped identify potential locations of the moss. Traveling aboard the National Geographic Expedition, Sussman worked with explorer Peter Hilary to find and identify the illusive moss.04_Sussman_EI_Moss_water_1068px Sussman heard about this 2,000+ year-old llareta in the Atacama Desert, Chile from an internet commenter who had spotted her work on Flickr. The llareta is a dense flowering shrub related to parsley, which lives in extremely high elevations. There are many llaretas over 2,000 years old. They live so long because they grow slowly — only 1.5 centimeters per year — and are adapted to nutritionally-poor environments. 07_Sussman_Llareta_Chile_0308_2B31_1068pxThis 100,000-year-old sea grass meadow is located in a UNESCO-protected waterway between the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, near Spain. The Posidonia oceanica meadow is a clonal colony, meaning that plants reproduce asexually from a single ancestor and contain the same genetic material. To view the meadow, Sussman traveled with scientists doing field work in the area.08_Sussman_seagrass_0910_0753_1068pxTo find this 13,000-year-old Eucalyptus tree, Sussman had to find her own way after meeting an Australian researcher in Perth who handed her a branch cutting of a cloned version of the tree. The researcher gave her general directions and told her to find the right specimen by matching leaves on the cutting to those of the tree. Sussman declined to reveal the species name because it might hint too heavily at its location. There are fewer than five left of its kind on Earth.10_Sussman_Eucalyptus_NSW_1211_2233_1068px

Yayoi Kusama, I Who Have Arrived In HeavenA great piece of art can get the world talking, and create a lasting impression that people continue to buzz about for years to come.

We asked art experts, like the folks from Artsy, to select the most talked-about works of art from galleries, auction houses, or art shows within the last year or so.

From paintings to sculptures to bizarre and possibly illegal installations, these 19 works of art had the world buzzing this year.

Actress Tilda Swinton partook in a piece of performance art called "The Maybe," when she slept in a glass box at New York's Museum of Modern Art last March. Swinton would appear at various times and places throughout the museum.

Jay-Z's "Picasso Baby" is a 10-minute music video that should be considered a piece of performance art. Inspired by Marina Abramović's 2010 installation "The Artist Is Present," director Mark Romanek shot over 30 hours of footage showing Jay-Z rapping his song over and over again at Chelsea's Pace Gallery in July. The film premiered on HBO in August, and is now permanently viewable on YouTube.

A new video detailing the planning and environmental considerations being put into Apple's new Cupertino headquarters has leaked.

Apple's plans for a second headquarters were approved in 2012 by Cupertino city council and development is already well underway.

Once complete (sometime in 2016), it will be an environmentally friendly building filled with green space. Let's see how it came to be that way.

You may remember seeing the concept art for Apple's shiny new headquarters-to-come.

15 Apps For Your iPhone That Are Better Than The Ones Apple Made

now out these apps that will make you a pro iphone photographer

Your iPhone comes with a bunch of standard apps right out of the box.

But since the App Store launched in 2008, developers have found ways to improve on the basic apps that come with your iPhone. For every basic app like Calendar, Music, and Weather, there's a better alternative.

We rounded up some of the best alternative apps that can make your iPhone so much better.

Use the Gmail app instead of Apple's own mail app.

Gmail is a much better email app than Apple's own program, assuming you're already a Gmail user, of course.

The official Gmail app from Google syncs better with your account and makes it easier to search for older messages. You can also view messages as threaded conversations, just like Gmail on desktop.

Price: Free

Mailbox is another good choice for email.

Mailbox is another good alternative to Apple's Mail app. Mailbox treats your email inbox as a to-do list and encourages your to take care of messages as soon as they come in.

The real benefit is that you can swipe messages away and have them return later when you're ready to look at them. You can also use Mailbox's new "Auto-Swipe" feature that will automatically archive certain types of messages so they never clutter up your inbox.

Price:Free

Use Spotify instead of the Music app.

Apple's Music app is good for listening to MP3s you already own, but there's a lot more music out there to discover.

Spotify is the best solution. For $9.99 per month, you get access to millions of songs from all the major record labels. You can even download them directly to your device and listen to them offline. And if you still want to listen to MP3s you've downloaded, Spotify can play those too.

At $2,000 A Head, The World's New Most Expensive Restaurant Is A Sensory Overload

The new most expensive restaurant on the planet will soon be opening in Ibiza, Spain.

Debuting this May at the Hard Rock Hotel in Playa d’en Bossa, SubliMotion will seat 12 guests at a time for a 20-course gastro-sensory meal that will cost £1,235 per person, or more than $2,000 a head, according to The Daily Mail.

“What is SubliMotion? It’s hard to explain,” chef Paco Roncero explains in the restaurant’s promotional video. “[It’s] Ibiza, passion, gastronomy. A radically different show you can only experience for yourself.”

It’s certainly radical. The restaurant's walls are a virtual light show, and and moving pictures are projected on the tabletops, including a garden scene with fluttering butterflies and Versailles-style paintings.

sublimotion gif hard rock hotel ibiza

For example, eating on the beach is not the same as eating in a field.”sublimotion gif hard rock hotel ibizaHow very meta.

Roncero is one of Spain’s most famous chefs, having trained at the now-closed elBulli and earning two Michelin stars for his restaurant La Terraza del Casino in Madrid. The chef and restaurateur currently has five restaurants around the world, not including the upcoming SubliMotion.

The Best Fast Food In America

Best Fast Food in America wide graphicAmericans consume fast food in huge quantities.

From burgers and fries to burritos and pizza, the options are nearly limitless. With all the choices out there, it can be difficult to determine how to spend your hard-earned cash.

We asked our readers to tell us their preferred chains for different types of foods, and more than 2,200 responded.

The results show that while chains like Chipotle and Chick-fil-A are thriving, McDonald's is still holding its own.

Best Fast Food Burger: Wendy's (34%)

Wendy's classic burger—now known as Dave's Hot 'N' Juicy—scored high with Business Insider readers. The chain prides itself on never freezing meat and making each item to order. The burger is topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and condiments.

Other contenders included Burger King's Whopper (26%), McDonald's Big Mac (24%), White Castle Sliders (6%), and Carl's Jr.'s Famous Star (10%).

Best Pizza: Papa Johns (34%)

It seems that better ingredients do equal better pizza. Despite other chains' attempts to revitalize business with new menu items, Papa John's stuck to basics and won for best pizza.

Competition, however, was stiff. Pizza Hut came in second place with 31% of votes, while Domino's received 29% of the vote. Little Caesar's only managed to get 6% of votes.

Best Fries: McDonald's (57%)

No one in the fast food industry has been able to compete with McDonald's french fries. While Wendy's and Burger King have adjusted their recipes for years, McDonald's fries remain a classic.

Arby's Curly Fries came in a distant second with 17% of the vote. Wendy's received 14%, while Burger King came in at 11%.

Tjikko is considered the oldest known living clonal tree. There are however many examples of older clonal colonies of trees, which are a series of trees with a common root system and identical DNA.

Tjikko has stayed alive for so long because of a process called "vegetative cloning." When the trunk of Old Tjikko dies, the root system stays alive and sprouts a new trunk. Most trunks of the tree live for hundreds of years.

The tree was photographed by Rachel Sussman, who has been documenting the oldest living things on Earth for the last decade. Her work is now collected in a book released last week.

Sussman calls the tree "a portrait of climate change" because of how it has changed in recent years. For thousands of years, the tree appeared in a stunted shrub formation called a "krummholz" formation, due to the harsh environment. In a krummholz formation, the tree appears twisted, stunted, and deformed, to protect itself from strong, freezing winds.

Over the last century, the tree has sprouted a tall spindly trunk, caused by higher temperatures in the area. Many have attributed the temperature changes to climate change.

It's common knowledge that Ernest Hemingway enjoyed his liquor, but he wasn't alone.

Truman Capote called screwdrivers his "orange drink," J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis would often grab beers together at a local pub and talk about their books, and Jane Austen would write letters to her sister about the luxury of drinking a fine French wine.

We put together a list of 14 authors and their favorite drinks, from absinthe to a gin and tonic, even throwing in one writer who was quite possibly the biggest coffee addict of all time.

The 5 Biggest Box-Office Summer Showdowns

godzilla maleficentWhen a family movie like “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” for example, opens on the same weekend as an R-rated comedy like “22 Jump Street,” it's not as if they're competing for the same moviegoers. The target audiences are different, their theaters could be disproportionate, one could be in 3D — all factors that make for unfair fights,  (It's not all about a film's first three days either, but that's a different story.)

Nonetheless, if they open on the same weekend, one movie is going to come out on top and get the victor's buzz — and one of them isn't.

In that spirit, here's a looking at some of the blockbuster season's most intriguing box-office face-offs.

Movies going against each other at the box office >

“Godzilla” vs. “Million Dollar Arm,” May 16

Everyone's favorite rampaging reptile goes up against hunky Jon Hamm, the star of TV's “Mad Men,” as a baseball scout who takes an out-of-left-field approach to finding a star by mining India's cricket leagues.

Disney knows how to market a family film, and a baseball movie in the summer makes sense. But the hordes of fanboys who mobilize for monster movies gives “Godzilla,” from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., a clear edge. The presence of another TV star — Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad” — further tips the balance in favor of the the big lizard.

Prediction: “Godzilla,” in a romp

“A Million Ways to Die in the West" vs. "Maleficent," May 30

Will moviegoers prefer to get scared silly by Angelina Jolie as The Mistress of All Evil from “Sleeping Beauty,” or laugh themselves silly with Seth MacFarlane and his cowpoke pals?

Both movies have a lot going for them. Disney's marketing machine and Jolie's star power is a potent 1-2 punch, and this is the same young-girl target audience that made “Frozen” a blockbuster, though “Maleficent” is darker. The early buzz on “A Million Ways to Die” is positive and MacFarlane and Universal are hoping that he — along with co-stars Charlize Theron, Neil Patrick Harris, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried and Sarah Silverman — can do for cowboys what he did for teddy bears with “Ted.”

Prediction: “Maleficent,” but not a blowout

"22 Jump Street" vs. "How to Train Your Dragon," June 13

This is another battle between a kids film and an R-rated comedy. Sony's clearly confident in its sequel to last year's breakout hit based on the 1987 TV show, shifting it into the heart of summer.

Hits “Magic Mike,” “Wolf of Wall Street” and “This Is the End” have raised the heat index for Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum), and adding Ice Cube to the cast won't hurt. But Hiccup and Astrid, the two main characters in DreamWorks’ animated sequel, also have turned it up since the 2010 original.

The movie's Facebook page is approaching 6 million “likes” — which is “Despicable Me 2” range. One thing we know is that Hill will be in whichever movie comes out on top — he voices Snotlout Jorgenson in ”Dragon.”

Prediction: “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” but both will be big.

This Is What Happened When I Tried To Use Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX Tablet For Work (AMZN)

amazon kindle fire hdx 8.9

I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoy using Amazon's latest Kindle Fire tablet, the HDX  8.9.

It's amazingly light (13.2 ounces, not even a pound!), fast (a 2.2GHz Snapdragon processor), with a responsive touch screen and great screen quality. Plus it has goodies like front- and rear facing cameras, surround sound, and the battery lasts forever. It's a joy to play with.

Jump straight to the photos showing what it's like to use the Kindle Fire HDX tablet for work>>

But for the past few weeks, I've been trying — mostly unsuccessfully — to use this tablet for work, not just play. By work I mean email, creating and editing documents, backing up documents to Amazon's built-in cloud service, and sharing them with my main work computer, a MacBook Pro.

I've been testing the Fire HDX as a work machine because Amazon has added a whole bunch of enterprise-friendly features to it, like support for corporate email, a bunch of security options and, most importantly, the ability to share documents with my work computer via the cloud.

Amazon upgraded the HDX to go after an area where the Apple's iPad has been killing it: work tablets. Over 90% of tablets in the enterprise are iPads and nearly all Fortune 500 companies are using iPads, Apple's CEO Tim Cook says.

That's a potentially huge market for a Kindle with its low price, $379.

The easiest part of using this tablet for work was setting up email. I Just put in my email and password. Worked perfectly.

Enterprise users can also easily add Microsoft Exchange email accounts, though they might need some info from their IT department to do that.

Downloading documents as email attachments worked well. It even recognized when I had already downloaded the attachment and "restored" it.
