Take A Journey To Discover The World's Oldest Child

Skull National Geographics World's oldest child Ancient Homo Sapien

After decades of digging up prehistoric tools, archaeologist Harold Dibble from the University of Pennsylvania uncovered a rare skull in a Moroccan Cave, the find of a lifetime.

As Dribble's team investigated, Naked Science, a documentary program on the National Geographic Channel, followed the team for an episode they called The World's Oldest Child.

Coming into the find, researchers had no idea what species it came from, the age of the bones, or even how old the person was when they died — but they knew the find could be a big hint about how modern humans evolved.

When they found the bones, the skull was crushed into hundreds of pieces, so the team undertook major reconstructive efforts to get to know this ancient human.

Harold Dibble spent three decades digging up prehistoric stone tools before finding the human skull in Smuggler’s cave, in Temara, Morocco.

The World's Oldest Child.

Using the quartz in the soil, the researchers found that the skull is between 108,000 and 110,000 years old, from the same era in which modern human culture emerged.

The World's Oldest Child.

They don't know what species this skull belongs to — many types of ancient humans have evolved and gone extinct over the last four million years.

Meet Some Of The 30,000 Large Wild Animals Living In A Giant Tanzanian Crater

ngorongoro crater

If you're hoping to see Africa's "big five" on safari, there's no better destination than Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the massive caldera, formed nearly three million years ago following a volcanic collapse, and was amazed by the quantity and diversity of animals I saw in a single afternoon.

The 100-square-mile crater, part of the larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is home to some 30,000 animals, including around two dozen black rhino, which are extremely endangered. It also has the densest known lion population, and thousands of flamingo gather there during the rainy season.

Disclosure: Our trip to Tanzania, including travel and lodging expenses, was sponsored by the Tanzania Tourist Board, Africa Adventure Company, Singita Grumeti Group, Coastal Aviation, Qatar Airways, Tanzania National Parks, Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority and Wildlife Division.

I flew directly over the crater on the flight to Manyara Airstrip, where visitors to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area start their trips. The walls of the crater are around 1,600 feet high.

Our guide Ephrata of the Africa Adventure Company picked us up at the airstrip. From here, it's an hour-and-a-half drive the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

U.S. residents must pay $50 to enter the conservation area. The crater covers 100 square miles, but the park is much larger, encompassing some 3,200 square miles of plains, forests, and lakes.

13 Sexy Minimalist Ads That Reveal Less Than You Think

sexy minimalist ads

The news that Google has essentially destroyed — and replaced — the print ad business this week made us nostalgic for magazine and billboard ads.

Skip directly to the ads >

Sure, we still have TV commercials, and iPads and other tablets display some animated rich-media ads wonderfully. But mobile ads and web ads — the majority of ads we see these days — are tiny, crowded things.

Executing an old school magazine placement flawlessly used to be the gold standard for ad creativity. The key was minimalism, including the proper use of white space, negative space, and subtlety over brute force.

So we gathered together a dozen sexy ads from the recent past, all of which employ two factors: They're hot, and they show you a LOT less than you think you're seeing. Technically, they're safe for work, even if they don't appear to be at first glance.

hipster-Brooklyn-Europe-Mac-laptop-computer

App stores have become a hits-driven business. The top apps on the App Store and Google Play get far more downloads than ones down the list, which means popular apps backed by big companies have an unfair advantage.

But just like there's something special about indie films, artisan bakeries, and local boutiques, there's something special about apps made by small groups of passionate people.

Boxfish, the only TV companion you'll need.

Boxfish is a great way to find what's on TV with live feeds. Its "live windows" help you keep track of what's happening with your favorite shows. Best of all, it's in real time.

Boxfish builds its massive TV index from closed-captioning data. The company captures almost every word spoken on TV—currently 1,200 channels—and makes it searchable. That means you can actually see what people are talking about on a news or sports show, rather than relying on generic TV-guide program descriptions.

12 'Sesame Street' Scandals That Have Plagued The Show's History

0

Katy Perry Sesame Street

With the recent alleged sex scandal involving Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo, fans of "Sesame Street" have begun to see their beloved show in a very different light.

While the under age sex allegations have since been dropped, the scandal has still cast a shadow over what is supposed to be a colorful, kid-friendly show.

But this isn't the first time the popular PBS children's show has gotten bad press.

The show's 43-year history has been riddled with scandals, ranging from the more recent Katy Perry appearance debacle to the long-time rumors about Bert and Ernie's sexual orientation.

In 1969, "Sesame Street" was aimed toward an older audience and was labeled "Adult Only."

Early episodes of "Sesame Street" showed Cookie Monster smoking a pipe and an early green incarnation of Grover partaking in civil disobedience with hippies.

According to an NPR interview with The Week's Dale Hrabi in 2009, original episodes from 1969 to the early '70s are labeled "adult only" upon purchase and were meant to reflect the era.

Here's the Grover clip we mentioned:

In the 1970s, African American muppet Roosevelt Franklin caused controversy among parents.

Franklin appeared on "Sesame Street" from 1970-1975 before being removed from the show after allegations that he promoted negative stereotypes of black children. While he was often shown teaching about Africa and values, his rowdy nature and after-school-detention-looking class angered parents.

In the 80s, the show was forced to address Mr. Hooper's death.

When actor Will Lee, who played Mr. Hooper, died in 1982, "Sesame Street" writers had a challenging task on their hands. During a Thanksgiving Day episode in 1983, adult characters on the show explained death to Big Bird, who didn't understand why Mr. Hopper wasn't coming back. While the topic was addressed in a sensitive manner, many parents believed their children were still too young to learn about it.

Meet The New Politburo Standing Committee—China's 7 Most Powerful Men

China PSC

China officially wrapped up its 18th Congress yesterday.

We already had the names of the 205 members of the 18th central committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and the 171 alternate members.

But all eyes were on the make-up of the Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) – the all important decision making body that had been kept under wraps.

Click here to jump straight to the profiles >

Earlier this year it was reported that the PSC would be reduced to seven members, down from nine in order to simplify the decision making process and to limit power given to certain departments.

After an hour-long delay Xinhua announced the seven leaders that will form the new PSC:

  1. Xi Jinping - Head of China's Communist Party and chairman of China's Central Military Commission
  2. Li Keqiang - Premier (in March)
  3. Zhang Dejiang - Head of National People's Congress
  4. Yu Zhengsheng - Head of Chinese People’s Consultative Conference
  5. Liu Yunshan - Head of Propaganda Department
  6. Wang Qishan - Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection
  7. Zhang Gaoli - Executive Vice Premier

For investors that have been watching for these names, it is important to remember that the party's political path already seemed set based on Hu Jintao's speech during the opening ceremony of the 18th Congress.

Simon Rabinovitch of the Financial Times writes that Wang Qishan's appointment to the position of secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection is one of the most disappointing and worrisome developments:

"The biggest disappointment is the relegation of Wang Qishan, a strong voice for change, to the lowest-ranked position in the standing committee of the politburo, the seven-person team that forms the core of China’s leadership.

Many had hoped that Mr Wang, previously a vice premier responsible for economic and financial affairs, would be given even more authority over the economy. Instead, he will head a discipline inspection body that conducts corruption investigations."

He is also extremely worried about the appointment of Zhang to the role of executive vice premier since he drove growth as party secretary of Tianjin by taking on vast amounts of debt and helping create ghost towns and bridges to nowhere.

The party has yet to unveil its 25-member Politburo and the 12-member Central Military Commission.

Xi Jinping, Head of Communist Party, chairman of China's Central Military Commission, and President (in March)

Former positions: Member of Politburo Standing Committee (PSC), vice chair of central military commission (CMC) and vice president of China

Policy priorities: Xi Jinping is concerned with developing the private sector. He also wants to speed up market liberalization in foreign investment and develop Shanghai as a financial and shipping center.

Background: Xi was promoted to the Politburo standing committee during the 2007 Party Congress. He was also the first leader not chosen through a broader polling of CPC officials, rather, he was chosen through a polling of CPC officials.

Xi is considered a princeling since his father Xi Zhongxun was a former vice-premier.

Source: Cheng Li for The Washington Quarterly

Li Keqiang, Premier (in March)

Former position: Member of PSC, executive vice premier

Policy priorities: Li Keqiang is pushing for the development of affordable housing, programs of basic healthcare and social welfare, and is promoting clean energy.

Background: Unlike many Chinese leaders Li Keqiang comes from a less-privileged family. He was once a member of the Communist Youth League before he moved up and is therefore a member of the Tuanpai faction. Li was elevated to the PSC during the 2007 Party Congress and is likely to retain his position.

Source: Cheng Li for The Washington Quarterly

Zhang Dejiang, Head of National People's Congress

Former position: Politburo member, vice premier in charge of energy, telecommunications and transportation

Policy priorities: Zhang Dejiang wants to develop state-owned enterprises (SEOs), promote "China's Go Global Strategy" and indigenous innovation.

Background: Zhang served two terms as a member of the Politburo and was always more likely to make the PSC. The public has however been angry at him for for his handling of the Wenzhou railroad accident after he ordered the bodies of victims to buried on the site, according to NTDTV.

12 American Cities Where Homeowners Are Drowning In Their Mortgages

phoenix, arizona

In Q3, 14 million or 28.2 percent of American homeowners were in negative equity – in which a borrower owes more on their mortgages than their home worth –  according to the latest negative equity report from Zillow.

The number is actually down from 30.9 percent the previous quarter thanks to rising home prices.

But Stan Humphries, chief economist at Zillow said negative equity rates and home prices face risks from the broader economy.

"While we’re moving in the right direction, a substantial number of homes are still locked up in negative equity, unable to enter the existing re-sale market despite the desires of their owner. The housing market has found real momentum of its own, but is not immune from shocks to the broader economy. If negotiations centered on resolving the fiscal cliff don’t inspire confidence in investors and consumers alike, recent home value gains – and, as a result, falling negative equity rates – could stall."

We pulled the 12 U.S. cities where the rate of homeowners in negative equity (i.e. underwater on their mortgages) is highest.

18 Facts About Walmart That Will Blow Your Mind (WMT)

Walmart

Walmart announced its third quarter financial results this morning. The discount retailer reported earnings of $1.08 per share, which was slightly better than what analysts were expecting.

Sales climbed 3.4 percent year-over-year to $113.9 billion, but this number was expected to be higher.

But there's no question that the company continues to be one of the most powerful businesses in the world.

Walmart has come a long way since Sam Waltonopened the first discount store in Rogers, Arkansas 50 years ago.

So just how big has the multinational discount retailer become?

In fiscal year 2012, Wal-Mart registered approximately $444 billion in sales, which is $20 billion more than Austria's GDP. If Walmart were a country, it would be the 26th largest economy in the world.

Walmart has more employees worldwide — 2.2 million — than the population of Houston. The mega-retailer employs 1.4 million people in the U.S. alone.

The 50 Best Colleges in America

Best Colleges in America

When it comes to assessing the value of a college, only one thing matters: how much that school will help you succeed in life.  And with college tuition at record highs and staggering unemployment rates, it's more important than ever to select a school wisely.

For our fourth annual list of the Best Colleges in America, we asked real professionals in a variety of industries—most of whom have hiring experience—what they consider to be the best colleges in America.

And for the third year in a row, our readers have determined that the number one school in America is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Almost 1,500 of our readers responded, of which 90.7 percent had bachelor's degrees and 64.8 percent had hiring experience. Almost 30 percent of the respondents work in finance, 22 percent work in technology, 9.9 percent work in education, 9.9 are current students, 9.2 percent work in media and marketing, and 8 percent work in law.

Despite the high cost of tuition and large amounts of student debt, 52.2 percent of respondents said that college is still worth it. However, other people said that the value of college depends on factors such as the caliber of the school, major and coursework, the quality of the education, the cost of tuition and financial aid packages, potential return on investment, and social opportunities.

"Certain majors are worth it - finance, engineering, comp sci. Other majors are not worth paying 40k a year in order to still earn only 30k after graduation," one respondent wrote.

Other respondents stressed the quality of the education and the opportunities to learn as the most important part of a college education. One respondent wrote that "There's a huge intellectual growth you experience in college."

6 Reasons You Shouldn't Waste Money On A Smartphone

0
0

smartphone-cracked-screen

Smartphones are taking over the cellphone market. In the first quarter of 2012, 44 percent of the U.S. population had smartphones, according to research by Google and Ipsos MediaCT released in May 2012.

Are smartphone holdouts behind-the-times Luddites, or are there actually good reasons to resist the siren song of technology?

After all, purposely forgoing a smartphone when it's time to get a new phone is a tough sell.

"I think the reasons for not getting a smartphone are getting pretty few and far between," says Scott Stein, a senior editor at CNET.com.

Is now the time to draw the line in the sand and say no to 24/7 connectivity and nearly all of the information in the world literally in your pocket?

Smartphones can wreck havoc on your budget

There's a significant acquisition cost when buying a smartphone, as they're all varying degrees of pricey. But the bucks don't stop there — data plans are increasingly expensive.

"Data becomes such a huge part of the package that a lot of people might prefer to just pay for a voice plan and say, 'I do not want any part of that data access because it is getting too expensive,'" Stein says.

While talk is cheap, literally — who wants to talk on a phone these days? — data plans get expensive, and they're somewhat redundant.

The average U.S. household has five devices connected to the Internet, according to a survey by Chetan Sharma Consulting, a management consulting firm focused on mobile and voice communications. Some households have more than 15 devices.

One option for consumers: Get a simple phone and a tablet with a cellular package.

"Those often cost less, and you can choose to turn it on and off. That way, you can sort of connect as much as you want, but then your phone is not the thing that is carrying all of that burden," Stein says.

Shipping phones abroad exposes risk

Some electronics recyclers in the United States and other developed countries cut corners by shipping old electronics to developing countries where they are scavenged for resources and discarded.

According to the 2011 annual report from the United Nations initiative, "Solving the e-waste problem," or StEP, "Such informal recycling often takes place under the most primitive of conditions, with unprotected workers — often children — being exposed to dangerous chemicals and facing extensive health dangers. ... E-waste recycling and disposal practices found in places such as China, India, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Ghana and Pakistan include open burning of plastics, exposure to toxic solders, leakages of acids into rivers and general dumping of waste material."

It's estimated that this is the fate of 50 percent to 80 percent of all "recycled" electronics in the U.S., according to Electronics TakeBack Coalition, a nonprofit organization devoted to the promotion of green design and responsible recycling in the electronics industry.

"It's nearly impossible to get a firm number on the amount of phones shipped overseas from the U.S. This is mainly due to a larger problem of capturing what is in the waste stream," says Casey Harrell, campaigner for Greenpeace International.

In 2011, a bill that would have restricted exporting e-waste to developing countries was introduced in the House and Senate, where it was buried in committees.

Maybe you check email enough

Sure, the ability to settle an argument or find the lyrics to that song from 1992 on Google from anywhere, anytime is amazing.

It's nearly a superpower that anyone can put in their pocket all the time. The flipside of being connected all the time is that you're connected all the time. Are there any moments that should be Internet-free?

A recent survey found that most people would say no: 58 percent of smartphone users said they don't go an hour without checking their phones, according to the survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Lookout.com, a mobile security company.

The survey also found that 30 percent of smartphone users check their phone while dining with others, and 54 percent check their phone in bed.

While Bankrate didn't find any studies about their interference with marital harmony, anecdotal evidence suggests obsessive smartphone use can be a source of friction among couples.

"Maybe you do not like to always be connected. And that could be valid if you are not working in a field that you have to be. If you cannot get email on your phone, then that is a great way to explain why you cannot be reached," Stein says.

Restaurant Owner Shows Us Exactly How Much Dishes Are Marked Up

0
0

The average American household spends $2,620 annually eating out, compared to $3,838 eating at home. Consumers do it because eating out is fun, even though everyone knows that eating out is much more expensive.

To get a better sense of how much of a markup goes on at restaurants, we interviewed the owner of a nice Italian restaurant in Northern California.

"Our whole objective was to make good food at prices where people feel they didn't have to take a mortgage to come here and eat ... but if you want, you could buy a bottle of wine for $950 and you can eat the most expensive dishes and spend much more," said the owner, who preferred to remain anonymous.

Remember, the markup covers the cost of preparation and running a restaurant, as well as payment for the owner and employees.

Here are some pictures of real dishes at the restaurant along with the raw price and menu price:

Spaghetti with tomato sauce

Raw price: $6.00

Menu price: $14.00

This one is pretty dang easy to cook at home. Still, the pasta you'll get at this restaurant has a superior homemade sauce, with fresh tomatoes, which can cost a lot in the winter.

image

Risotto with seafood

Raw price: $16.00

Menu price: $24.00

A more expensive and more complicated meal, with a lower percent markup.

rissotto

Broccolini

Raw price: $3.00

Menu price: $8.00

image

Potatoes

Raw price: $2.50

Menu price: $8.00

Potatoes are one of the only vegetables that grow year-round so their prices vary little.

image

Bottle of wine

Retail price: $19.50

Menu price: $29.00

Wine is easy to markup because people will always pay for it to go with their meal.  But markups do depend on the discount the restaurant owner gets from the vendor.

image

Gelato

Raw price: $3.00

Menu price: $8.00

Gelato is bought in packs of five pounds at this restaurant, costing them $37.50 per purchase.

image

Cappuccino

Raw price: $1.50

Menu price: $4.00

image

Tea

Retail price: $1.00

Menu Price: $4.00

Tea is one of the cheapest things you can buy at the grocery store. But this is one of the highest markups on most menus. The brands used at this restaurant are Novus and Mighty Leaf.

image

At least the bread, which costs the restaurant $2.50 per pound, is provided free for diners.

apple tv set side

Here's some interesting news.

Jeffries analyst James Kisner wrote in a note today that the launch of Apple's long-rumored television set is "imminent."

Yes, these rumors have been persistent for about two years now. But sources continue to tell analysts and tech reporters that the device is going to happen.

So what do we know about the device? Keep reading for everything we know about the Apple TV.

Launch date: First half of 2013

Kisner didn't give a specific time frame for the Apple TV launch in his note, but Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster still believes it'll launch in the first half of 2013.

The TV's design will look like one of Apple's LED Cinema Displays.

Leander Kahney at CultOfMac cited an anonymous source who claimed to have seen a prototype of the TV and said it looked like a "much bigger" version of Apple's current line of desktop LED Cinema Displays, as seen in their mockup of the product here.

The new TV will come with Siri and Facetime built in.

CultOfMac's source also claims that the TV prototype includes built-in Siri functionality, a rumor that has floated around for awhile, so that viewers can control the TV without a remote. What's more, the source says that the TV has FaceTime so you could potentially use the big screen to video chat.

12 Fantasy Football Tips For Week 11

0
0

Malcolm Floyd San Diego Chargers

The window to make your league's fantasy football playoffs is closing rapidly with only seven weeks remaining in the regular season. The majority of those are swallowed up by the playoffs.

We've done our best to choose the best players and matchups for you to make lineup decisions this crucial week.

The final bye weeks of the season are upon us with the Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, and Tennessee Titans all taking a seat for the week.

The players we've chosen to sit are those we believe might not have weeks up to a starter's standards, and as always, the advice is based on 10-team standard leagues.

And make sure you lock up your line-up before Sunday morning after last weekend'sYahoo! gaffe.

START: Carson Palmer, Oakland Raiders Quarterback vs. NO

With so many starting quarterbacks sidelined or banged up, Palmer is still available in several waiver wires because he's flied under the radar to this point.

He deserves a look against the New Orleans pass defense, which has been an opposing quarterbacks best friend.

Season Total: 230/375, 2,723 yards, 15 TDs, 9 INTs

13 carries, 28 yards, 1 TD

SIT: Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams Quarterback vs. NYJ

He got favorite target Danny Amendola back last week, but if there's one thing the New York Jets do well it's defend against the pass.

Bradford only has two 300-yard passing games and one game with three touchdowns this season. He's an underwhelming option this week.

Season Total: 179/288, 2,072 yards, 10 TDs, 7 INTs

22 carries, 72 yards, 1 TD

START: BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Cincinnati Bengals Running Back at KC

Many people expected Green-Ellis to be a running back that racks up plenty of rushing touchdowns, but that hasn't been the case this season.

The Chiefs have been susceptible to giving up plays in the running game over the last few weeks, giving up an average of 112.7 yards on the ground per game over the last three weeks.

Season Total: 157 carries, 537 yards, 3 TDs

12 catches, 61 yards

Here's How Leo Burnett Says 8 Execs Allegedly Sabotaged The $710 Million Kellogg Account

Leo Burnett CEO Tom Bernardin

In papers filed as part of a lawsuit in Cook County, Ill., Leo Burnett has described in detail just how much trouble it is in on its Kellogg account.

Go straight to our blow-by-blow retelling of the walkout >

Kellogg spent a total of $710 million last year on ads, according to Ad Age, and Burnett regards it as one of its "flagship" pieces of business. (It has served the company for 60 years.)

But on Friday, Nov. 2, eight staffers working on the customer relations management portion of the business resigned en masse — and Leo Burnett then sued them, alleging it was an act of sabotage.

The executives who left were Amanda Ashley, Nate Buechler, Allison Chaplain, Jeremiah Dy-Johnson, Kristy Gibbs, Lisa Hamming, David Rasho and Matthew Johnson.

The complaint — obtained by Business Insider today — goes into detail about how the resignations went down, and how much financial damage there could be. Among the allegations:

  • The agency and its Arc Worldwide unit has lost svp Kristy Gibbs, the only executive at Leo Burnett who actually understands how the Kellogg CRM database works.
  • Gibbs was pitching other clients for Leo Burnett, and the agency may now lose that business, too.
  • Also resigning was director of optimization David Rasho, who holds the key client relationships with Kellogg's CRM staff.
  • That Leo Burnett believes it may lose the CRM business as Kellogg has not guaranteed it will stay with the agency.
  • And that the agency believes Kellogg cannot tolerate a delay on its CRM assignment.
  • Leo Burnett waited four days — across a weekend — to tell Kellogg what had happened.

We've compiled a blow-by-blow account of the resignations, the financial impact it could have on Leo Burnett, and the agency's confession to Kellogg from the lawsuit. We were unable to reach the defectors for comment; they have not yet filed papers in their defense. Currently, we only have Leo Burnett's side of the story. Presumably, the eight have a different interpretation of events. Nonetheless, this is the most detail available on what the agency describes as the "crisis" that hit on Nov. 2.

Here's the broad overview: Leo Burnett believes the eight resigned "to create a crisis" on the Kellogg account.

The agency confesses that Kellogg is a "flagship" client worth several million dollars to the agency — and that it is using its Kellogg experience to pitch other clients.

At 2.41 p.m. on Nov. 2, the alleged mutineers walked into the office of Steve Grosklaus, evp/director of optimization, and resigned.
