The Financial District Has An Incredible New Lunch Spot [PHOTOS]

hudson eatsHudson Eats, a new food court in New York’s Financial District, is set to take over lower Manhattan’s lunch hour.

The 35,000-square-foot food court is part of a $250 million renovation at Brookfield Place  a dining, retail, and office complex that was formerly the World Financial Center. Hudson Eats is located on the second floor of the mall, mere blocks from the 9/11 Memorial — an ideal location for both office workers and tourists.

The space is huge, with 600 seats and a nearby atrium. And it's beautiful, with superb views of the skyline and Hudson River, tall windows, white marble finishes, and leather booths.

But what makes Hudson Eats truly exciting is the food: The food court houses a dozen casual eateries, including New York favorites like Black Seed Bagel, Chop't, Dig Inn, Dos Toros, Little Muenster, Mighty Quinn's Barbecue, Num Pang, Olives, Skinny Pizza, Sprinkles Cupcakes, Tartinery, and Umami Burger.

Blue Ribbon Sushi and Northern Tiger will open in the fall.

Hudson Eats has set itself up as the perfect place for businessmen, locals, and tourists to grab a quick and delicious lunch. With all the excitement surrounding the Financial District’s latest hub, we had to try it for ourselves.

Hudson Eats is inside Brookfield Place, right near the World Trade Center. The food court is accessible through American Express Tower at 200 Vesey Street.

It's a bit of a hike from the subway, and you'll have to avoid construction at the World Trade Center, as well as the crowds at the 9/11 Memorial.

Prepare for another trek once you're inside the building. We followed the arrows pointing towards Hudson Eats. In addition to the food court, Brookfield Place will also house a French marketplace and six restaurants, which will open in 2015.

The Humble First Jobs Of 15 Highly Successful People

0

warren buffett young and old

It can be easy to see the world's most powerful and influential people as occupying a sphere far removed from the rest us.

But many of the one-percent started off with conventional first jobs.

Goldman Sachs' CEO Lloyd Blankfein, for example, grew up in the projects and made extra money at a concession stand in Yankee Stadium. Warren Buffett built his savings as a kid by delivering newspapers. And before she found her calling in media, Oprah Winfrey worked at a corner store.

We'll take a look at 15 highly successful people who made the most of, but weren't defined by, a modest first job.

Lloyd Blankfein sold snacks at Yankee Stadium.

As the CEO of Goldman Sachs, Blankfein is one of the most influential people on Wall Street.

But he worked his way up from the bottom. He grew up in Brooklyn housing projects and worked his first job as a concession vendor at Yankee Stadium.

Richard Branson was an amateur bird breeder and arborist.

Branson, the billionaire founder of the Virgin Group, has worked for himself from day one. Although he's a bit more careful about his business decisions today.

At the age of 11, Branson says in a LinkedIn post, he and his best friend Nik Powell started breeding parakeets to sell as pets to their classmates. The birds started multiplying faster than they could sell them, so they then tried their hand in a different market. As Christmas approached, they bought small fir trees and hoped to make a profit off them once they grew big — but rabbits destroyed the trees before they could grow.

Beth Comstock worked in a Rubbermaid factory.

Comstock is the CMO of General Electric and oversaw the creation of the Hulu streaming service.

But before she entered the professional world, she learned the value of hard work at a Rubbermaid factory that produced kitchenware. In a LinkedIn post, she explains that she took the summer job after her freshman year of college as a break from academic work but found herself completely overwhelmed. She's still proud of learning how to work as a team to overcome the difficult months of labor.

Arsenic Pollution Has Decimated This Village In China And Cursed The Population With Cancer [PHOTOS]

heshan2

HESHAN China (Reuters) - Xiong Demin could not have foreseen that the mine he worked at for 32 years would leave his home village poisoned and hundreds of residents, including himself and his wife, stricken with cancer.

The 71-year-old retired mechanic and his wife, Wen Jin'e, both suffer from cancer, which they blame on arsenic pollution left by the mining and processing of realgar, also known as "ruby sulphur", near Heshan village in Hunan province.

"She and I wake up every day just to await death, there is nothing we can do, there is no hope," said Xiong, as he lifted his shirt to show skin lesions and warts on his belly, back and legs.heshan1

Arsenic and inorganic arsenic compounds, often used for herbicides, wood preservatives and in the metallurgical industry, are listed as carcinogenic to humans by the World Health Organization, and can cause cancers of the skin, bladder and lungs.

Mines and chemical plants mushroomed in the realgar-rich area around Heshan from the 1950s until 2011 when they were shut down due to the pollution they caused, but dust and runoff from arsenic plagues Heshan to this day, destroying crops and poisoning people.heshan6

In 2010, 157 villagers from Heshan, with a population of about 1,500, had died of cancer caused by arsenic poisoning in the previous two decades, and another 190 had developed cancer due to arsenic poisoning, the villagers wrote in a letter to the local government, seen by Reuters, seeking compensation and aid.

More than 200 people tested positive for arsenic poisoning in a nearby city hospital last year, Wen said.

An official surnamed Tan at Baiyun township government, which administrates Heshan, declined to comment when reached by telephone.

heshan5

'PLANTS DIE'

China has many so-called cancer villages, blamed by residents on industrial pollution. While the central government says it is dedicated to protecting the environment, the tax receipts from polluting plants are often a vital source of income for local governments.

Xiong used to maintain machines in the mine, and had an operation in 2012 for skin cancer, which later spread to his lungs. Wen, 65, who used to wash clothes in the polluted river, was treated for skin and cervical cancer in 2011.heshan8

Xiong and Wen each got 10,000 yuan ($1,600) from the local government for their cancer, but it was not even enough for one round of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, according to Wen. Cancer treatment had drained their savings.

Their son and two daughters, like most young people in Heshan, have left the village to escape the toxic environment. Unable to afford the inpatient treatment they need, the couple now lives in their mostly empty two-story house built with money made from the mine.heshan4

Research in the 1990s showed that arsenic concentration in the mining area near Heshan was up to 15 times the level deemed safe for farm land by Chinese government standards, according to state media.

Rice can not grow because of heavy arsenic concentrations in the water, many other plants often die when rain washes airborne pollutants into the fields, villagers said.

"For the future, we will just hang on for as long as we can, there's not much money for medicines," Wen said, "I've been buying some sleeping pills."

"I just don't want to die too painfully when the end comes."heshan3

America's REAL Most Expensive Colleges

Most Expensive Colleges Graphic

Every year, college costs are rapidly rising higher and higher, with many schools now charging more than $60,000 for one year's education.

A list recently released by the Department of Education charts the highest tuition in the country. Unfortunately, the tuition numbers used in the rankings are two years old, and fail to show the full cost of attending college.

We've compiled a list of the colleges that are charging the most for tuition, required fees, and room and board for the 2014-15 academic year. These numbers are solely what you would pay directly to the school, so you're still going to have to cover books, travel, and beer, as well as a health care plan.

Click through to see what the most expensive colleges in America are charging their students, and see how they compared to last year's list. For schools that didn't offer a flat total on their website, we added up the fees that a typical first year student would incur.

Jill Comoletti contributed research to this article.

saturn storm cassini

Exactly 10 years ago, on July 3, 2004, NASA's Cassini spacecraft arrived at its main target: Saturn.

It had already traveled for about five years, having left Earth on October 15, 1997.

The space probe has traveled more than 3.8 billion miles and sent back more than 300,000 images.

During its travels, Cassini has swung around Venus twice, checked out Earth from space, and slipped by Jupiter on its way to Saturn and its moons, where the spacecraft has spent the last decade.

See the best images Cassini has beamed back >

From its observations, NASA has discovered some of Saturn's moons contain ice, organic particles, and lakes full of hydrocarbons. The probe has even sent back images of these amazing landscapes.

In November 2016, Cassini will begin a series of orbits that will get it ever closer to Saturn, and by Sept. 15, 2017, Cassini will enter Saturn's atmosphere, sending back the closest images of Saturn ever taken before the pressure and temperature of the gas giant's atmosphere destroys the probe.

On its way to Saturn, Cassini snapped this portrait of Jupiter from 6.2 million miles away composed of 27 images.

It caught the first high-resolution images of Saturn's moon Lapetus showing its geologic structures.

Cassini has given many great, close-up views of Saturn's moon Titan. Those clouds cover an incredible sight on this moons' surface.

It turns out that there are a surprising number of mirrors in museums, so when Google unleashed its Street View cameras to catalog the insides of museums around the world, more than a few of them ended up accidentally taking pictures of themselves, we learn via Quartz.

Spanish artist Mario Santamaría noticed this happening quite a bit and did exactly what one should do upon noticing a trend: build a Tumblr around it.

Titled "The Camera In The Mirror,"Santamaría's site catalogs the eerie moments in which Google's cameras photograph their own reflections. You get a peek at them wrapped up in silver cloth or exposed to reveal a surprisingly robot-like body.

Hello, there.

Barnstable, MA fourth of July parade

There are some people who are proud to be American, and then there are entire cities that really bust out the red, white, and blue like it's nobody's business.

With the Fourth of July around the corner, we found the most patriotic cities in the U.S. of A.

We created a patriotism score for cities around the U.S. by looking at three categories: the percentage of people who are veterans, according to the 2012 American Community Survey; the percentage of residents 18 and over who voted in the 2012 presidential election; and the ranking of the best cities for Fourth of July celebrations from Wallet Hub. We made a weighted average of the three scores, with 50% going to veterans, 30% going to voting turnout, and 20% from the Fourth of July celebrations.

25. Medford, OR

Medford's annual "Red White and Boom" celebration goes late into the night, with performances by notable country music stars and the largest fireworks display in Oregon. Its Hawthorne Park is also home to a seven-foot-tall replica of Lady Liberty.

The Raspberry Pi is a low cost computer board and a maker's dream come true. It now faces some competition from the slightly more premium HummingBoard, but people have already been using it for a couple years to make a variety of cool, useful things possible.

Originally conceived as an educational product for removing as many barriers as possible for teaching people to program, the Raspberry Pi has been popping up in various home-brewed tech creations, acting as the brain that makes all kinds of electronic doodads come to life.

Despite its low price and diminutive size, the Raspberry Pi is an extremely capable machine that can run a number of different operating systems. These are mostly specialized versions of Linux, but some have even hacked Android onto it.

Given all the customizability and utility offered by this platform, you have to see the wild stuff people are making with this super-affordable computer.

Mine your Bitcoins with a dedicated device.

Now you can mine your Bitcoins on a dedicated Raspberry Pi rig. It's got an LED readout to tell you how well it's working and how much Bitcoin it's mined. It uses USB-based mining processors since the Pi's processor isn't as capable as dedicated miners.

Turn your Kindle into a barebones computer.

Whatever your reasoning – you want a small computer or just a cool project – your old Kindle can be hacked up to work with the Raspberry Pi and a keyboard.

Build an arcade table.

The Pi can run all sorts of old gaming emulators. By embedding a Pi-enabled display in a table and tricking it out with old arcade buttons, you've got a nostalgic piece of gaming hardware appealing to even the strictest gaming aesthetes.

27 Iconic Photos From The Longest War In American History

0

afghanistan infantry soldier dirty

In the wake of the devastating terrorist attacks on Sep. 11, 2001, the U.S. vowed to hunt down those responsible and bring them to justice.

That hunt immediately led to Afghanistan, the home of the Taliban government harboring the Al Qaeda terror group that carried out the attacks.

Less than a month after 9/11, U.S. Special Forces and CIA operatives were on the ground to link up with Northern Alliance fighters. Dubbed Operation Enduring Freedom, the Afghan campaign would initially be hailed as a rousing success, with the Taliban driven out of power just two months after American boots were on the ground.

But that success morphed into a hard slog for NATO troops, who endured heavy combat, roadside bombs, and an insurgency that enjoyed relative safety in Pakistani tribal lands. Now more than a decade after the war began, the U.S. cannot claim "victory," but the combat mission will come to an end later this year.

In response to the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. partnered with the Northern Alliance, a rebel group that had been fighting the Taliban for years.

The Afghan war began with a massive bombing campaign helped by CIA and Special Forces on the ground, who ultimately drove the Taliban from their last stronghold in Kandahar two months later.

Many militants were captured in the initial stages of the war, and they were later sent to the newly-opened Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba.

The F-35 Fighter Jet Is A Historic $1 Trillion Disaster

0
0

F-35

This was supposed to the be the F-35's big month.

The troubled next-generation fighter jet was going to make its international debut at the Farnborough Air Show in England. The U.S. and its partners would have something to show for their years of delays, setbacks, and cost overruns.

They would have nothing less than a functioning version of the most advanced warplane in history.

This potential breakthrough has hit an all-too-typical stumbling block.

The Air Force temporarily suspended all F-35 flights after one of the planes caught on fire before takeoff at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Even if the plane does debut later this month, it still has some serious issues, and a long way to go before it can be rolled out for combat missions. Already, the plane is expected to be delayed for over a year beyond its projected mid-2015 delivery date.

Despite this, it's not likely that the F-35 will ever be scrapped. As we reported back in November of 2012, there are simply too many countries that have invested time and money into the program.

It is, quite literally, an aircraft that is "too big to fail" despite facing lifetime operating costs for the U.S. Fleet of $1 trillion, and cost overruns of $167 billion before a single plane has flown a single mission.

We've gone back and looked at the biggest problems with the F-35 program, according to an official Pentagon report.

Developed by Lockheed, the fighter has three variants: the conventional F-35A for the Air Force; the F-35B for the Marine Corps, which can take off and land vertically; and the F-35C for the Navy, a carrier version.

If all goes to plan, the Pentagon is on track to spend a huge figure of $396 billion on the jets, including R&D. It doesn't help that the cost to build each F-35 has risen to an average of $160 million from $69 million in 2001. The project is an astounding $167 billion over-budget.

More amazing than the cost of fabricating the F-35s is the expense of operating and supporting them: $1 trillion over the planes' lifetime. Ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. John McCain, described that estimate as “jaw-dropping."

RANKED: The 13 Best Health And Fitness Apps

0
0

fitbit force

Health and fitness apps are all the rage these days.

There are plenty of different options to choose from, whether you're looking to track your running or your diet. And according to mobile analytics company Flurry, these apps are getting a whole lot of usage

Between December 2013 and June 2014, health and fitness apps grew 62% in usage, compared to apps overall which grew just 33%.

To get a better idea of which of these apps are topping the rest, we decided to rank them based on information from research company AppData.

The company calculates app download estimates based on the frequency and quantity of an app's ratings. When applicable, they also calculate how many users logged in to an app via Facebook and an estimated iOS revenue based on ranking, in-app purchases, and the cost of the app itself.

Noom Weight — 2,921 iOS downloads in June

Noom helps you lose weight by coaching you as you log your diet. You can also join a group of users to get more support.

While the app only ranks No. 191 in Apple's "Top Free Apps - Health & Fitness" genre, it saw 55,279 Facebook logins in the month of June.

Zombies, Run! — 5,322 iOS downloads in June

Zombies, Run! turns a boring run into an exciting chase with zombies. The app puts together a whole narrative while you're running while at the same time tracking your stats and ensuring a good workout.

Despite the fact that Zombies, Run! is not ranked in Apple's "Top Free Apps - Health & Fitness" genre, the app garnered $15,315 in revenue in June from Apple's App Store, according to AppData. Unlike most of the apps in this list, Zombies, Run! is not free, so you'll have to shell out $3.99 to have zombies chase you.

Weilos — 7,675 iOS downloads in June

Weilos creates a community of users trying to lose weight so you don't have to go it alone. Users can post photos and quotes to support each other.

The app only ranks No. 154 in Apple's "Top Free Apps - Health & Fitness" genre, but the company claims its users have already lost more than 150,000 pounds in total since the current version of the app launched in late January.
