The Dutch National Airline Named Its Planes After These 10 Incredible Women

KLM McDonnell Douglas MD-11

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines operated the last scheduled flight of its McDonnell Douglas MD-11 airliner this month. With the conclusion of a weekend flight from Montreal to Amsterdam, all 3-engined widebody airliners have been retired from passenger service.

Due to age and poor financial performance as a passenger carrier, the tri-motor airliner has been all but relegated to cargo service; FedEx is the only major company flying them.

The last MD-11 of KLM's fleet of 10 — christened "Audrey Hepburn"— is headed for storage in the California desert.

Audrey Hepburn was not the only accomplished woman to have an MD-11 named in her honor by the airline. In addition to the Hollywood screen icon, significant women from the field of science, music, literature, the arts, education, philanthropy, and aviation were selected by KLM.

Audrey Hepburn is a legend of the silver screen. The winner of 3 Academy Awards, Hepburn is known for her iconic roles in 'Breakfast At Tiffany's, 'Sabrina,' and 'My Fair Lady.'

Florence Nightingale is the mother of modern nursing. The KLM MD-11 named after her was delivered to the airline in 1994.

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and pioneering educator. KLM's MD-11 named after her is headed for storage along with her sister planes.

Go Inside The Brooklyn Factory Where America's Most Powerful Men Have Their Suits Stitched By Hand

$

martin greenfield clothiers suit factoryA menswear factory in Brooklyn has been "doing things the old-fashioned way" for more than 60 years.

Martin Greenfield Clothiers produces handmade men's suits, an impressive feat considering less than 3% of clothes sold in the U.S. is American-made. Most U.S. apparel companies outsource their labor to places where clothing is faster and cheaper to make. But Martin Greenfield isn't in the menswear business for the money alone.

Greenfield arrived at Brooklyn manufacturer GGG Clothes in 1947 from Czechoslovakia; it was his first job in the States. He carried unfinished garments from one station to the next. A poster boy for the American Dream, Greenfield worked his way up from blind stitcher to supervisor to vice president, and eventually bought the factory, renaming it in 1977.

Today, he continues the tradition of making suits by hand at his four-floor warehouse in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where his client list includes Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Michael Bloomberg, and Leonardo DiCaprio. "I see my suits being worn all over the world," Greenfield says. "I love to see the results."

You can read more about Greenfield's life story in his upcoming memoir, "Measure of a Man: From Auschwitz Survivor to Presidents' Tailor," which goes on sale November 10.

On Varet Street in East Williamsburg, a 100-year-old brick building houses the last unionized men’s clothing factory in New York City with more than 100 employees.

The city was once an epicenter of apparel manufacturing, with more than 3,000 clothing factories rooted here. During the 1970s, fast and low-cost labor abroad forced U.S. companies to ditch the “Made in the USA” label for cheaper alternatives.

Today, 97.5% of apparel sold in America is made outside the U.S. Martin Greenfield Clothiers is the exception — a company thriving by doing things the old-fashioned way, and employing people rather than machines.

Business Insider checked out the McLaren last year in New York. We're still waiting to get an up-close with the LeFerrari, successor to the Enzo and Ferrari's new flagship supercar.

Both are gorgeous. Both are hybrids. Both cost more than $1 million.

We crunched the numbers — considering power, speed, looks, and more — to find out if one is better.

WHERE'S EMPLOYEE #1 NOW: What The First Hires At Apple, Google, And Other Top Tech Companies Are Up To

Kevin Systrom Noah Glass

Who were the first non-founders at today's top tech companies, like Apple, Google and Facebook?

Business Insider tracked them down and learned what they're doing.

Some made millions, others saw fortunes slip through their fingers, and some have joined or founded other startups.

Taner Halicioglu was Facebook's first "real" employee outside of the founders. He juggled a bunch of operations roles.

Halicioglu worked for Facebook from October 2004 through November 2009. He had many roles to juggle but was a senior software and operations engineer when he left.

After Facebook, Halicioglu joined Blizzard Entertainment as a lead reliability engineer. Halicioglu is now a computer science and engineering lecturer at UC San Diego. He is also an angel investor and startup advisor.

Shel Kaphan was Amazon's first employee after Bezos and his wife.

Kaphan joined Amazon in the fall of 1994 and worked there until 1999. He was initially Amazon's VP of Research and Development. By the time he left, he was Amazon's CTO.

Now, Kaphan is doing what you'd expect most early employees to do: philanthropy and pursuing personal interests.

He never retained co-founder status at Amazon, although he brainstormed the startup idea with Bezos before Amazon was incorporated. He and Bezos had a falling out, but Bezos once called him "the most important person ever in the history of Amazon.com."

Craig Silverstein was Larry and Sergey's first hire at Google. He left in 2012 to join education startup Khan Academy.

Silverstein was employed by Google from 1998 until 2012. He worked on various projects there, and he mentored engineers. Silverstein also helped build Google's search engine.

He is now Dean of Infrastructure at education startup Khan Academy.

New York's Subway System Turns 110 — See How The City's Famous Trains Are Made

If you live in New York City, chances are you use the subway system daily. Love them or hate them, New York's subway cars are an iconic symbol of the city. But have you ever wondered how those cars came to be?

We did, and since today marks the 110th anniversary of our glorious subway system, we thought we would find out.

We took a trip (via subway, of course, as well as Metro-North rail) up to Yonkers, New York, to the Kawasaki Rail Car Manufacturing Facility, where many of New York's subway cars are completed and readied for service. What we found gave us a new perspective on the way we get to work every morning.

Kawasaki has been making heavy rail cars since 1906. Their Yonkers factory recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Why Yonkers? An initial contract with the Port Authority for PATH trains stipulated that cars had to have final assembly done within a 25-mile radius of the Statue of Liberty. The building also used to be a Port Authority building.

Rolling stock makes up 10% of Kawaski's manufacturing, which includes commuter rail, high speed rail, light rail, and heavy rail. At this site, they do final assembly of brand new cars, as well refurbish older ones.

Kawasaki is the second largest manufacturer of train cars, owning 23.5% of the passenger rail market, just behind Bombardier with 30.1%. The third largest competitor is Siemens. Subway cars are built on contract from various authorities. The Yonkers plant has built and overhauled cars for the Port Authority, LIRR, PATH, SEPTA, and others.

Business Insider was on the scene to cover the glamour and the madness. We found some time to photograph our favorites, in between constant petting, and we present them to you now.

Take A Tour Of An Abandoned Underground Cold War Missile Base

Titan Missile base

In 1960, during the height of the Cold War, the US Air Force introduced the Titan I, its first series of multi-stage Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. Along with the Atlas missile program, they became an integral part of the US's nuclear deterrent against the Soviet Union.

The Titan-I and the machinery and crew needed to launch them were housed in massive underground silos connected by thousands of feet of tunnels. Missile bases were built all over the United States, costing the US government millions.

But by 1965, the Titan-I's and their bases were all but abandoned, phased out in favor of newer and more advanced missiles.

A few Titan-I bases still remain intact, buried reminders of some of the most dangerous years of the Cold War.

Urban explorer and photographer Amy Heiden gained access to one of them, once part of Beale Air Force Base, in Chico, California, and documented the sprawling 1960s nuclear base lurking just below the earth's surface.

More of Heiden's work can be seen on her website and blog

From the surface, the base look unassuming. But much lies below these launch doors.

Source

Over 600,000 cubic yards of earth were removed in the facility's construction, and "32,000 cubic yards of concrete, 300 tons of piping, 90 miles of cables and 1,800 separate supply items" were used for each complex, according to the US Air Force.

Once underground, there's an intricate system of tunnels which connect three missiles silos to each other, as well as to other areas of the base.

Norway's Island Prison For Violent Criminals Looks Like No Prison We've Ever Seen

$

Bastoey 9 2

About a mile off the coast of Norway, in the Outer Oslofjord, is an island that's home to 115 criminals, including convicted murderers, rapists, and drug dealers.

Yet no barbed-wire-topped walls or electrified fences circle the island, nor do armed guards and attack dogs patrol the grounds. By all accounts, the island prison and its inhabitants live in peace, working together and sharing resources.

Bastøy Prison has been called one of the most liberal prisons in the world. Prisoners and guards work together, tending to farm animals and chopping wood for the winter months. They play cards, ski and play tennis, cook, and take classes. When 3 p.m. rolls around, most of the non-convicts head home, leaving only five guards to keep watch overnight.

The prison is so peaceful that filmmaker Michael Moore filmed on the island for his documentary, "Sicko," but didn't put it in the final cut, thinking no one would believe the place really existed.

Norwegian officials hope that Bastøy, an experiment now in its 32nd year, will rehabilitate prisoners, instilling values of responsibility, trust, leadership, and accountability. And it seems to be working, as recidivism rates for the prison are just 16%. (In the US, the five-year rearrest rate is more than 75%.)

Photographer Espen Eichhöfer visited the island during the winter for a story in Zeit Magazine and brought back these amazing images and stories, which he has shared with us here.

Bastøy Prison sits on Bastøy Island, a mile off the coast of Norway in a fjord, about 46 miles from the capital city of Oslo. Unlike other island prisons, like Alcatraz or Rikers, which are known for their brutal isolation, Bastøy Prison is known as one of the most liberal prisons in the world.

Here, 115 prisoners mostly live in communal houses, along with 69 prison employees, almost all of whom return to the mainland at day's end. Only five guards remain on the island during the night. The houses include kitchens, living rooms, and private bedrooms.

The basic principles of Bastøy Prison are ones of mutual respect and trust. Prisoners work together in a farm setting, tending to animals and woodworking. Given these responsibilities, officials hope to promote rehabilitation and learning, and lower repeat offenders.

Stanford University Graduate School of Business

One of the hottest debates among young Wall Streeters involves six letters — MBA or CFA.

We've looked at it from the perspective of recruiters, comparing compensation and time spent getting each accreditation, but nothing beats hearing it straight from the horse's mouth.

We reached out to sources who hold either CFA charters or MBA degrees to find out what makes one better than the other. In this particular story, we're presenting the MBA case.

Agree to disagree if you want.

Better networking during the process.

According to our sources, Business School is where you meet people — your classmates, faculty, speakers, recruiters. They all come to you.

A better-connected alumni base.

The CFA Institute is trying to get better, but it just doesn't have the close-knit alumni community that business schools around the country have been fostering for decades. If you think you'll need that, the MBA is a better option.

Better for working in a variety of sectors.

Yes, you'll most likely concentrate in a certain skill set, but with the variety of business classes at your disposal, the MBA is better for working in different kinds of jobs, from business journalism to the C-suite.

21 Insightful Quotes From Bill Gates, Who Just Turned 59

bill gates

Bill Gates' personal net worth — an estimated $80 billion— rivals the GDP of Ecuador and tops Croatia's.

The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, which he and his wife set up in 1997, gives away nearly $4 billion a year.

The Financial Times wrote that "through the stroke of pen on cheque book, Gates probably now has the power to affect the lives and well-being of a larger number of his fellow humans than any other private individual in history."

How did the world's wealthiest man get to where he is today? Gathered from 20 years of interviews, these quotes show how Gates grew from startup nerd to software titan to history-shifting activist.

On the journey so far

"It's pretty amazing to go from a world where computers were unheard of and very complex to where they're a tool of everyday life. That was the dream that I wanted to make come true, and in a large part it's unfolded as I'd expected. You can argue about advertising business models or which networking protocol would catch on or which screen sizes would be used for which things. There are less robots now than I would have guessed."

[Rolling Stone, March 13, 2014]

On why Microsoft succeeded

"Most of our competitors were one-product wonders ... They would do their one product, but never get their engineering sorted out.

"They did not think about software in this broad way. They did not think about tools or efficiency. They would therefore do one product, but would not renew it to get it to the next generation."

[BBC, June 19, 2008]

On collaborating with Apple early on

"We had really bet our future on the Macintosh being successful, and then, hopefully, graphics interfaces in general being successful, but first and foremost, the thing that would popularize that being the Macintosh.

"So we were working together. The schedules were uncertain. The quality was uncertain. The price. When Steve first came up, it was going to be a lot cheaper computer than it ended up being, but that was fine."

12 Big Cities Where Home Prices Are Sliding

Home prices are declining.

Month-over-month, home prices fell 0.15% in August according to Tuesday's S&P/Case-Shiller report.

Additionally, the year-over-year growth rate slipped to 5.6% from 6.7%.

These are all reflective of what may be a maturing housing recovery.

But all hope isn't lost just yet.

"September figures for housing starts, permits and sales of existing homes were all up,"the Case-Shiller report states. "Continued labor market gains, low interest rates, and slower increases in home prices could support further improvements in housing,"

Mortgage rates recently fell to a 16-month low, which may encourage more prospective buyers to pull the trigger on a home.

Still. 12 out of the 20 cities ranked by Case-Shiller saw a month-over-month decline in August.

We've ranked these cities in order to show which housing markets saw price drops in the last month.

Cleveland: Prices are down 0.1%

Year-over-year change: Prices up 0.8%

Tampa: Prices down 0.1%

But "vacation" means something a little different when you're a tech millionaire or billionaire.

In addition to an island in Washington and a beachfront Hawaiian estate, Allen owns a hilltop mansion on the Côte d'Azur called the Villa Maryland. He employs a staff of 12 and counts Bono and Andrew Lloyd Webber as neighbors.

Disturbing Video Of A Woman Walking In NYC Shows The Prevalence Of Street Harassment

A new video shows what it’s like to be a woman who is harassed by catcallers just walking down the street.

The video, which we first saw on Gothamist, was shot to draw attention to Hollaback!, a nonprofit dedicated to ending street harassment, and was directed and produced by Rob Bliss Creative

He filmed New York-based actress Shoshana B. Roberts with a hidden camera walking through New York City over the course of 10 hours wearing jeans and a crew neck t-shirt.

As she walks down the street — minding her own business — men feel entitled to yell things at her, telling her to “smile,” “have a good day,” and “God bless you."

One of the scariest moments in the two-minute video is when a man walks silently alongside her for over five minutes, even though she says nothing the entire time and is visibly uncomfortable.

In total she encounters over 100 instances of verbal street harassment during her 10-hour walk through NYC. The video says this doesn’t include the winks, whistles, and non-verbal harassment Roberts also faced.

The project is a shocking reminder of how common street harassment is and offers a glimpse of what women face on a daily basis.

Written by Megan Willett.
