Here Are 18 Things Navy SEALs Never Leave Home Without

SEALs

The Navy SEAL who claims to have shot Al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011 and is speaking with Fox News later this week has revealed his identity to The Washington Post.

Robert O'Neill reportedly earned 52 commendations over 16 years in the Navy. He was involved in the 2009 raid on the Mearsk Alabama, the event that inspired the film "Captain Philips." And he now says he was one of the SEALs who shot the most wanted terrorist alive.

The SEALs have some of the highest-pressure jobs in the entire US military and work under almost incomprehensible physical and mental strain. They're better prepared and better trained than just about any other special operations force on earth.

In No Easy Day, his book about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, former SEAL Matt Bissonnette talks about what it takes just to get ready for a combat deployment.

He recalls meeting at SEAL Team 6 HQ in Norfolk, Va. before jumping into the fight. On the day before leaving for the Bin Laden operation, Bissonnette asked a more experienced SEAL what he should bring along.

The senior SEAL stopped, looked at his new teammate and said: "Dude, what do you think you need to bring for deployment? Load it ... Bring what you think you need."

The following list is what Bissonnette brought along.

This post was originally written by Geoffrey Ingersoll and Robert Johnson.

Body armor plates are able to stop up to three AK-47 rounds — but are only guaranteed to stop one.

Some SEALs go "slick" and remove their plates, depending on different scenarios.

Depending on how far they're traveling and the type of mission they're engaged in, SEALs may just not wear them.

In No Easy Day, Bissonnette says to a buddy: "If I get shot, don't tell my mom I wasn't wearing these plates."

Body armor plate carriers offer protection and are handy for storing all manner of necessary items.

SEALs will surely have one of these — they help carry a few of the next 17 things on this list.

Helmets like this will stop shrapnel, but have also been known to deflect sniper rounds.

The "brain bucket:" No matter what, every soldier wears one.

Even the tiniest fragment or the smallest piece of high-velocity hot metal can enter through soft tissue and puncture your brain, with fellow troops left guessing as to what caused your death. In combat, your life literally depends on wearing one of these.

What 18 Extremely Successful People Were Doing At Age 25

$

young richard branson

Everyone's path to success is different.

For some, it's mostly linear. Others encounter more twists, turns, and bumps along the way.

Billionaire Mark Cuban, for example, faced hardship when he first started. When Cuban got to Dallas, he "was struggling — sleeping on the floor with six guys in a three-bedroom apartment," he wrote in "How To Win At The Sport Of Business." On the other hand, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz was a Xerox salesman dreaming of good coffee.

To prove that no two paths to success are alike, we've highlighted what Cuban, Schultz, and 16 other successful people were doing at age 25.

This is an update of a post originally written by Vivian Giang and Max Nisen.

Martha Stewart was a stockbroker for the firm of Monness, Williams, and Sidel, the original Oppenheimer & Co.

Before her name was known in every American household, Martha Stewart worked on Wall Street for five years as a stockbroker. Before that, she was a model, booking clients from Unilever to Chanel.

"There were very few women at the time on Wall Street … and people talked about this glass ceiling, which I never even thought about," Stewart said in an interview for PBS's MAKERS series. "I never considered myself unequal, and I think I got a very good education being a stockbroker."

In 1972, Stewart left Wall Street to be a stay-at-home mom. A year later, she started a catering business.

Mark Cuban was a bartender in Dallas.

At age 25, Cuban had graduated from Indiana University and had moved to Dallas. He started out as a bartender and then a salesperson for a PC software retailer. He got fired because he wanted to go close a deal rather than open a store in the morning. That helped inspire him to open his first business, MicroSolutions.

"When I got to Dallas, I was struggling — sleeping on the floor with six guys in a three-bedroom apartment," Cuban writes in his book "How to Win at the Sport of Business.""I used to drive around, look at the big houses, and imagine what it would be like to live there and use that as motivation."

Arianna Huffington was traveling to music festivals around the world for the BBC with her boyfriend at the time.

Before she was Arianna Huffington, she was Arianna Stassinopolous, and at the age of 21, she met the famed British journalist Henry Bernard Levin while on a panel for a quiz show.

The two entered into a relationship, and he became her mentor while she wrote the book "The Female Woman," attacking the women's liberation movement. The book was published when she was 23.

For the next few years, Huffington traveled to music festivals around the world with Levin as he wrote for the BBC. Her relationship with Levin eventually ended because he did not want to marry or have children. Huffington moved to New York City at the age of 30. That year, her biography of Maria Callas was published, which she dedicated to Levin.

She told William Skidelsky at The Observer:

"[Levin] was my mentor. Our second date was to see 'The Mastersingers' at Covent Garden. Our first trip abroad was to Bayreuth to see 'Wagner's Ring.'"

20 Vintage War Planes In Microsoft Cofounder Paul Allen's Multimillion-Dollar Collection

paul allen planes

Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen has plenty of interesting hobbies, including playing in a rock band and collecting real estate and sports teams.

One of his biggest passions over the years, however, has been aviation.

When he was young, his father was named the associate director of libraries at the University of Washington.

"I'd spend hours reading about the engines in some of those planes," Allen told Forbes. "I was trying to understand how things worked — how things were put together, everything from airplane engines to rockets and nuclear power plants. I was just intrigued by the complexity and the power and the grace of these things flying."

Allen started collecting planes and other World War II artifacts in the 1990s. In 2004, he opened his 31-piece collection — rumored to be worth many millions of dollars — to the public. It's currently housed in the Flying Heritage Collection, in a hangar in Everett, Washington.

Allen's collection includes two types of British planes that served in WWII. The Supermarine Spitfire has often been credited with winning the Battle of Britain. This particular plane was heavily damaged during a raid on enemy territory, though it has since been restored.

Source: Flying Heritage Collection

The Hawker Hurricane destroyed more enemy aircraft than any other British plane. This plane never saw combat and was recovered from a farm in Ontario, Canada, not far from where it was manufactured.

He also owns a number of German planes, some of which were actually used by pilots during WWII. The Fieseler Storch was named for the German word for "stork" because its wings could be folded down to be transported by train.

bii retail sales volume

Since the early days of the internet, entrepreneurs have dreamed of moving grocery shopping online. It's finally starting to happen.

We've created these slides to preview our report on how e-commerce is finally beginning to carve up the groceries market, the biggest untapped e-commerce opportunity. Americans spend $600 billion a year on groceries, the largest retail category by far. Less than 1% of those sales occur online. Same-day delivery services, specialty grocers, and meal-preparation businesses will drive fast growth in online groceries — much faster rate than offline.

BI Intelligence is a research and analysis service focused on e-commerce, mobile computing, digital media, and payments. Only subscribers can download the full report on e-commerce groceries as well as the individual charts and datasets in Excel, along with the PowerPoint version of this deck. Please sign up for a free trial here.

10 Horrible Tech Habits You Need To Break Today

$

computer hacker

We're all guilty of it. There are plenty of times where we do things simply because they're easier or more convenient — even though they may be damaging to the gadgets we use every day.

Or, even worse, some poor habits could put your personal information at risk.

From managing your passwords poorly to becoming the equivalent of a digital hoarder, here are a few habits and routines you should try to avoid.

Using the same password for everything

This is probably the most common (and one of the worst) habits people fall into. It's easy to use the same password for all of your online accounts. Who wants to remember dozens of different passwords?

The truth, however, is that this is incredibly dangerous. If a hacker happens to obtain one of your passwords, he or she will be able to access your entire digital life. If you're having a hard time creating new passwords, try using a password management app such as Last Pass or Dashlane.

Never changing your password

While you should never use the same password for multiple accounts, you should also change your existing passwords on a regular basis. Microsoft suggests that you change your passwords every 30 to 90 days to be safe.

Not using two-step authentication to protect your important online accounts

In the age of sophisticated hacks and vulnerabilities such as the Heartbleed bug, it's important to set up extra protection for your online accounts. Services such as Gmail and Dropbox offer two-step authentication.

This allows you to use your phone to verify your identity when logging into your account. After you type in your password, the service will send a text message to your phone with a code. You would then type that code into your account to log in.

Two-step authentication prevent hackers from logging into your account even if they have your password.

16 Hidden Secrets In Pixar And Disney Movies That Actually Exist In Real Life

big hero 6 baymax hiro

Disney's newest film, "Big Hero 6," opens this week.

And some eagle-eyed viewers have already spotted some Easter eggs in the trailer that was released over the summer.

An Easter egg, as it relates to movies, is when the movie's creators hide something in the film that's an intentional inside joke.

John Lasseter, cofounder of Pixar and now overseer of all animation projects at Disney, is no stranger to the Easter egg world. Both of the companies he's led, particularly Pixar, have included dozens of Easter eggs in their movies. There's even something called the Pixar Theory, where all the Pixar characters live in the same universe.

Some Easter eggs are based on real-world locations. There are obvious ones — in the beginning of the 2006 movie "Cars," the announcer says the entire town of Emeryville will be closed for the race; Pixar Studios is in Emeryville, California — but some Easter eggs aren't so obvious.

Pixar just announced another sequel to "Toy Story" during Disney's Q4 conference call. It'll come out in June 2017, so it's a sure bet that even more Easter eggs are on their way.

References to A113.

Perhaps the most famous of all the Pixar Easter eggs are references to A113. References to A113 can be found in all Pixar movies, some Disney movies, and even in "The Simpsons" and other animated shows and films. References to A113 can also be found in video games. Chances are, if an alum from the California Institute of the Arts is somehow involved, A113 will be included in the animation.

That's because A113 is the classrooms used by the graphic design and animation students at the school, including John Lasseter.

The real CalArts is located in Southern California.

Fenton's Creamery in Disney-Pixar's "Up" is located in Oakland, California.

At the end of the movie, Russell and Carl can be seen eating an ice cream cone on the sidewalk in front of Fenton's Creamery

These Pictures Show Why The Special-Forces-Designed Tough Mudder Course Is So Crazy

$

ToughMudder (24 of 43)Since Tough Mudder was founded in 2010, 1.3 million people have participated in one of the company's "military style" obstacle courses, which cover 10 to 12 miles of ground and include about 20 different challenges.

The event is part of a growing "obstacle course" trend among fitness enthusiasts and weekend warriors. There is no shortage of similar competitions, including the Spartan Race, the Warrior Dash, the Color Run, and the Superhero Scramble.

All cater to people yearning to do something extraordinary. A common refrain in marketing materials, from employees, and from "Mudders" is to get up off the couch and "overcome your fears." It costs between $125 and $500 to participate in a race.

For first-timers, who make up the majority of Mudders at any event, it's about overcoming a challenge and team-building. Most people participate with a team, some with friends, some with coworkers, and others with random groups of people assembled specifically for the event.

We followed one group — the Brooklyn Fitness Team — from training through the event to see what it takes to prepare and run a Tough Mudder.

We arrived early one Sunday morning in McCarren Park, where the Brooklyn Fitness group was training. The team had been training in the park biweekly since the beginning of summer. One member described the trainings as "too damn early and too damn cold."

The team was put together by Allen Bozeman, a personal trainer with Soma Health Club. Most members of the team train regularly with Bozeman.

To prepare for the Mudder, Bozeman designed a training series that includes multiple exercises and obstacles broken up by long-distance runs. "The goal was to mimic the format [of the event]," Bozeman said.

world getting better

It's easy to focus on everything that's going wrong in the world.

If the media coverage of ISIS and Ebola has shown us anything, it's that we're easily seduced by fear-mongering.

But Dr. Max Roser wants to remind us the world is getting better. That's why Roser, a fellow at the Institute for New Economic Thinking, created OurWorldinData, a website that tells the visual story of how the world is changing.

"We are far away from an ideal world — we should work to end poverty, to end hunger, to end war — but in all of these aspects we are making progress," Roser wrote in an email to Business Insider.

Roser hopes people will find his work encouraging and energize them to make positive change.

"Studying our world in data and understanding how we overcame challenges that seemed insurmountable at the time should give us confidence to tackle the problems we are currently facing," he wrote.

Here are 25 charts from Roser's website that show just how much global living standards have improved.

The percent of the world's population living in extreme poverty is declining drastically.

As global GDP increases, inequality between world citizens is shrinking.

People are becoming more satisfied with their lives as their incomes rise.

33 Quintessentially 'British' Brands That Are Not Actually British

Union Jack projected on Westminster Abbey

British brands are appreciated around the world for their quality and heritage.

Many of them, though, are also owned by foreigners.

For some "British" brands, it's well-known they have foreign owners: Surely everyone is aware that Harrods was bought by Qatar Holdings in 2010? And before that it was owned by the Fayed brothers of Egypt?

But others are more discreet about their proprietors. They know that the Brits occasionally fight for their companies to stay in British hands, like when MPs went to bat against Kraft's takeover of Cadbury in 2011.

HP is the famous brown sauce of the Houses of Parliament (hence the name). Nevertheless, it is owned by Americans: Heinz purchased it in 2005.

House of Fraser is owned by the Sanpower Group, a Chinese corporation that bought it this year for £450 million ($716 million). Before that it was owned by the Icelandic group Baugur.

What could be more British than Sarsons vinegar on a plate of fish and chips? A Japanese vinegar manufacturer, Mizkan, bought Sarsons in 2012 for £41 million ($66 million).

NFL QUARTERBACK POWER RANKINGS: Where All 32 Starters Stand Going Into Week 10

$

0

peyton manning smiling

The NFL season is half over and two familiar faces — Peyton Manning and Tom Brady — are on top of the league.

Using three different advanced stats, we came up with a formula to rank all 32 NFL starters at the halfway point.

The formula uses Football Outsiders' DYAR metric, Advanced Football Analytics' "win probability added" metric, and ESPN's total QBR metric. These three stats measure slightly different things, so weighting them evenly should give us a decent picture of the NFL quarterback pecking order.

There are some surprises (Carson Palmer!) and some not-so surprises (Peyton).

1. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos

Team record: 6-2

DYAR rank: 2nd

QBR rank: 1st

WPA rank: 1st

One thing to know: He's the best in the world, despite the fact that he self-admittedly "stunk" against New England.

2. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers

Team record: 5-4

DYAR rank: 5th

QBR rank: 2nd

WPA rank: 4th

One thing to know: He has thrown six interceptions during his team's three-game losing streak.

3. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

Team record: 5-3

DYAR rank: 6th

QBR rank: 3rd

WPA rank: 3rd

One thing to know: He has the lowest interception rate of his career.

9 Proven Tricks For Overcoming Anxiety And Fear

$
0
0

skydiving scared

Back in the earlier days of evolution, humans were prey to giant hyenas, cave bears, and predatory kangaroos.

We've been able to outlast those guys, but evolutionary psychologists will tell you that we're still on constant lookout for the thing that wants to eat us next.

The trouble is, the audience at your next presentation is not, in fact, a bunch of razor-toothed animals. They generally want to see you do well.

Since being plagued by anxiety is a sure way to sabotage your own success, we've put together a collection of research-backed tips for overcoming your fears.

Kim Bhasin contributed research to this article.

Breathe deeply because it lets your nervous system know that it can chill out.

You've probably heard that breathing is a good call if you're stressed out.

But what's fascinating is the reason why it works so well.

"Deep diaphragmatic breathing is a powerful anxiety-reducing technique because it activates the body's relaxation response,"explains Psych Central editor Margarita Tartakovsky. "It helps the body go from the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system to the relaxed response of the parasympathetic nervous system."

Slowly expose yourself to the things you're afraid of, so they're no longer unfamiliar to you.

If you're trying to get comfortable with negotiating, speaking in public, or other scary activities, psychologists often recommend exposure therapy.

Rehab Institute of Chicago neuroscientist Katherina Hauner has found that it can dramatically improve the way people relate to their fears.

"It is usually done in a series of hierarchical steps, starting with a relatively low level of engagement with the feared situation, and increasing the level with each step," she told the Huffington Post.

"For exposure therapy with a dog phobia," she says, "we might start with just looking at a very small puppy from many feet away, and eventually work our way up to petting a very large dog."

Recognize when you're succumbing to 'misplaced' anxiety, and let it go.

As Wharton research scholar Jeremy Yip has found, fear about one thing in your life has a way of spilling over into other parts of your life.

If you have car trouble on your way to work, there's a good chance that feeling of anxiety will carry over into your workday.

You might feel less confident about pitching your boss on a new project because when you ask yourself, "How do I feel about this?" your general feelings of anxiety make you more risk-averse.

To deal with that, try and recognize where the fear is coming from. If you're worried because you need to make improvements, listen to that. If you're worried because your exhaust is making funny noises, don't.

London house prices are crazy. They've gone up by about a fifth in the last year, from an already-high level. The average price has already climbed over £500,000 for the whole city, let alone the highly-priced core.

So it's no surprise that some people who can are quitting London and moving out, where their money goes a lot further. But just how much further can you make your money go?

If you've ever idly daydreamed about what you could afford with your modest, central London flat, wonder no more. We've collated some of the grandest homes from the rest of the country for less than a million pounds, next to their central London equivalents.

You could have this 10 bedroom manor in Durham. It's 900 years old, has 10 bedrooms, a banqueting hall, and it's on the market for £750,000 ($1.186 million).

Or you could have this two bedroom flat in Paddington, going for £850,000 ($1.345 million).

There's this Georgian 23-bed mansion in south-west Scotland, which belonged to the earls of Galloway. It's being sold for upwards of £595,000 ($941,000).

Spend A Night With The Rat Hunting Dogs Of NYC

Rat Hunters 9

New York's rats are nasty, and there are about two million of the furry, disease-carrying creatures roaming the streets and alleys of the city.

If you call the city about a rat problem, they'll give you tips on keeping them out and tell you how to find a pest control company to poison the rodents.

But there are others out there who hunt New York's vermin, and they don't do it for pay — they do it because it's in their nature (and because their owners want to let working terriers"do what they do best").

The rat hunters of New York are known as the Ryders Alley Trencher Fed Society (R.A.T.S.). They train dogs to hunt rats and will take the canines anywhere requested to, as they say, eRATicate the pests, provided the location is safe for the dogs, away from traffic, and relatively pedestrian-free.

R.A.T.S. has been around since 1995. The name combines a reference to the notoriously rat-infested Ryder Alley in Manhattan with "trencher fed," a term that refers to hunting hounds that live with their owners and go out on group hunts. The most common dog breeds used by the group are border terriers, Norfolk terriers, fox terriers and dachshunds, all historical rat catchers.

When weather allows, the rat hunters go out as often as once a week. We've compiled some photos here from one July expedition with information from Mitch Moxley of Roads and Kingdoms, who spent a night with R.A.T.S. last year.

On the night of July 25, a man named Bill walks by dumpsters in a vacant lot near Delancey Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He's headed to an alley — a preferred hunting location — with his dog Paco, a Feist Terrier. Small dogs flush out the rats, while larger dogs cut off the rodents' escapes.

Bill and Paco aren't alone. They join up with Richard Reynolds, a founding member of the R.A.T.S., along with Judy and her Border Terrier Merlin. Richard is using a flashlight to look for rats in one of the dumpsters, while Judy and Merlin stand ready if any rats are flushed out.

After Reynolds' search with the flashlight comes up empty, Merlin gets knee deep in the dumpster himself. The dogs are obviously enjoying themselves on the rat hunt. The R.A.T.S. says that no dogs have been hurt since hunts started, aside from the occasional small scratch or bite on the nose — even though the most common rats they encounter are Norway Rats, which can weigh up to a pound.

But probably my favorite item on the list this year is an $85 “365 Gathered Truths Box” which is literally just a box filled with sayings printed on handmade paper. “I like to read as many as I can while I'm waiting five minutes for my [Oprah] chai to steep,” she says. “If you get only one of my Favorite Things this year, I'd want this to be it."

GTA IV screenshots

"Grand Theft Auto IV" has been out since 2008.

Since then, PC enthusiasts have tested the limits of the game, installing their own modifications to increase the game's level of detail.

Photographer and game enthusiast Raphael Smith has installed a handful of these mods on a PC that only cost him $950 a few years ago.

The resulting screenshots are so realistic and lifelike that they can easily be mistaken for photographs, and that's not an exaggeration.

You've never seen game graphics look this good.

Note: All screenshots used with permission.

Smith used a few different "mods" to make sure every little detail was updated.

He used two different mods to increase the textures of the city buildings.

Another mod added realistic weather to the game.
