The Top 10 Dream Jobs In The UK

$

0

Two-hundred years ago, Napoleon called Britain "a nation of shopkeepers," and it seems that's still true.

American Express teamed up with the research firm Conlumino to find out which jobs British people dream of the most. Of those polled, the largest percentage of Britons said they would like to own a shop. A career as a musician or a scientist rounded out the top three.

Of course, dreaming is one thing, and acting on that passion another. According to American Express, only 5% of adults are trying to make their dream a reality and open their own shop in the next five years.

Check out the top 10 list below:

RANKED: The Best Smartphones In The World (VZ, T, DT, S)

Samsung galaxy note Edge

If you're waiting until the last minute to buy a smartphone for the holidays, we have you covered.

Here's our monthly list of the best smartphones you can buy.

We update this list approximately once a month. Our rankings are based on a variety of factors including design, software and hardware features, content selection, carrier availability, and price. We only consider phones that are available in the U.S. at the time of publication. We list approximate prices for what phones cost without a contract. Prices vary from carrier to carrier and retailer to retailer. You can see November's smartphone rankings here.

#17 BlackBerry Passport

BlackBerry's newest smartphone is the square-shaped BlackBerry Passport. It's fat and wide compared to all other smartphones, a design BlackBerry hopes will help it stand out. It also has a physical keyboard, a rare thing these days.

Unfortunately, early reviews for the Passport were pretty negative.

Price: $600 unlocked from BlackBerry

#16 Amazon Fire phone

Amazon's first smartphone, the Fire phone, generated a lot of hype before it launched in July. But just about every critic bashed it. It's an interesting device thanks to its screen's 3D effects, but it doesn't have the same vibrant app ecosystem as the iPhone or Android phones.

Click here for the Amazon Fire phone review >>

Price: Starts at $450, only on AT&T.

#15 Nokia Lumia 830

The Nokia Lumia 830 is one of the newest phones from Microsoft. It runs the Windows Phone 8 operating system and has a sharp 5-inch screen. An added bonus: AT&T will give you a free FitBit Flex fitness tracker with the Lumia 830.

Price: About $450 on AT&T

18 Tricks To Dramatically Increase Your Productivity

Email marketing computer coworkers

Sometimes it seems like there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done.

In his book "Extreme Productivity," Harvard lecturer Dr. Robert Pozen outlines the keys to achieving more, and better, results.

Read on to see 18 of Pozen's best tips, so you can learn how to do exactly that.

Thanks to Dr. Pozen for permission to feature his work.

Carolyn Cutrone contributed to this article.

Rank your priorities by importance, and allocate time accordingly.

Pozen says there's a difference between tasks that are high priority and those that are low priority — and how much time you should allocate to each.

Write down all the things you plan to do, and organize them by weekly targets, yearly objectives, and long-term career goals. Then rank each task by relative importance. In the most productive scenario, you should be spending more time on the higher-ranked ones and less time on the lower-ranked ones.

Source: "Extreme Productivity"

Know what results you're looking for, and make a beeline for them.

The number of hours of work you put in doesn't matter nearly as much as achieving the best possible results. If you determine what your final outcome needs to be, it can help you lay out a more efficient plan on how to get there, which frees up time.

Always pause halfway to the end to make sure that you're on track and, if working with others, that you coordinate approaches.

Source: "Extreme Productivity"

Ignore 80% of the emails and requests you receive during the day.

The amount of time you devote to a project has to vary based on the importance of your project. Pozen says that doing B+ work on your low-priority tasks is usually good enough.

There's no need to put in the extra time and effort and focus on all the minute details of these tasks. Pozen even suggests discarding or ignoring 80% of the emails and requests you receive, as they're usually not important anyway, and answering the other 20% right away.

These Incredible Images Show What Humanity Will Look Like When We Colonize The Solar System

wanderers

This short film rivals the most stunning scenes in Christopher Nolan's recent film "Interstellar." But unlike Nolan's sci-fi blockbuster,  "Wanderers" depicts all real locations throughout the solar system where humanity could potentially colonize.

This breathtaking 4-minute video was created by Swedish animator and digital artist Erik Wernquist.

In it, Wernquist displays a future in which humans journey to the planets, moons, and asteroids within our own solar system. This is our real sci-fi future, if we are willing to invest in it.

The images are accompanied by Carl Sagan's narration about the insatiable curiosity that drives humankind to explore other worlds, from his book "Pale Blue Dot."

High above Earth's atmosphere, Wernquist depicts a future spacecraft embarking on a long journey across the solar system, to distant worlds. This image of Earth was taken in 2003 by cameras aboard the International Space Station. The ISS orbits Earth 268 miles above the surface — about 900 times closer than the moon, the only other heavenly body man has ever walked upon.

Jupiter's Great Red Spot is shown here while an intrepid, future explorer looks upon the storm that has scarred the face of the giant planet for more than 300 years. The original image of Jupiter depicted here was taken by NASA's Voyager 1 satellite in 1979.

Humans will likely never inhabit Jupiter because it has no solid surface, but that hasn't stopped sci-fi authors like Arthur C. Clarke from envisioning life on the giant gaseous planet in his 1972 novel "A Meeting with Medusa."

A Sommelier Chooses 11 Wines That Make Great Holiday Gifts For $16 Or Less

Wine_Gift Guide

The holiday season means holiday parties, and if your schedule is anything like ours, you're going to be buying a lot of wine.

We asked sommelier Jörn Kleinhans, owner of the Wine Elite Sommelier Company, to share some of his favorite affordable picks.

11. Sparkling Wine From Limoux

Such as:2012 Saint-Hilaire Blanquette de Limoux, $9.98

"French champagne may be the original sparkling wine, but the pricing scares many consumers into the more affordable Proseccos from Italy, Cavas from Spain, or American sparkling wines," Kleinhans explains.

"Little do most holiday shoppers know that France has a number of regions that are not Champagne, but make world-class sparkling wine at much more affordable rates," he continues. "Experts can often not tell the difference. The best region that offers this is called Limoux, and is located in the South of France."

10. Zinfandel from California

Such as: 2012 Cline "Ancient Vines" Zinfandel, $14.99

"Nowadays wines under this name are only grown in California and are somewhat of an indigenous representation that doesn't have an equal," says Kleinhans. "One should not underestimate the rich beauty of the Californian wines we have in the US. They should be a clear example of American wine-making."

9. Tempranillo from Spain

Such as: 2010 Finca El Encinal Crianza Ribera del Duero, $14.99

"This is the most important grape of Spain that will give you a good sense for the Spanish style of wines," says Kleinhans. "It should show you silky notes of American oak and dark cherry, which are some of the signature signs of Spanish winemaking."

Facebook holiday partyFacebook certainly has reason to celebrate this year. Their mobile ad revenue has taken off, they bought messaging service WhatsApp for $22 billion, and Instagram has been on the rise.

To kick off the holiday season, the company threw an extravagant holiday party last night at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The entire park, which was reserved for the company, was washed in Facebook-blue lights.

The bannered entryway featured a step and repeat covered with the Facebook logo where guests could pose in front of the World Series trophy. The San Francisco Giants Lou Seal mascot was also on hand.

The party itself took place inside giant tents erected in the middle of the field.

One massive tent held a packed dance floor which was illuminated by giant baseballs and the letters “FB” in lights.

Another area featured a giant clear Facebook “F” logo filled with baseballs.

There was a full bar and tons of food. Facebook also erected rows of beer pong tables emblazoned with their logo inside the clubhouse. A live band was set up for guests to sing karaoke.

Facebookers and their friends roamed the park taking selfies and partying late into the evening.

Facebook's giant party tents covered the entire baseball field.

Hundreds of people lined up to enter the massive event.

Everyone was given the opportunity to pose with the World Series trophy. "Does life get any better?" Facebook's Alex Helm posted.

The 10 Tallest Skyscrapers Of The Future

Tallest Buildings

We have entered the age of the “megatall” skyscraper.

The first megatall tower — a building that soars over 2,000 feet into the air — opened ten years ago, according to Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). It was the Burj Khalifa, and it set astounding records at 2,722 feet tall or over half a mile high.

But come 2018, a new building will rise more than 550 feet taller than the Khalifa.

And the CTBUH predicts that buildings will just keep getting taller. There may even be a kilometer-tall building (that's 3,280 feet) by the end of the next decade.

We rounded up a list of some of the tallest buildings that are currently under construction, according to CTBUH. All of them will be finished by 2020, and four of them are more than 2,000 feet tall.

Needless to say, the skylines of the future will look a lot different.

10. Zhongguo Zun, Beijing, China

China Zun

Height: 1,732 feet, Floors: 108

Completion: 2018

The name comes from the zun, an ancient Chinese wine vessel that inspired the building design. After completion, the so-called "China Zun" will be Northern China’s second tallest building.

Byron Wien Made 10 Big Predictions For 2014 — Here's How They're Doing (DIA, USD, SPY, QQQ, IWM, TLT, JPY, EWJ, USO, DBC)

$
0
0

byron wien

At the beginning of 2014, Blackstone Group Vice Chairman Byron Wien released his 10 surprise predictions for the markets and the economy.

Wien is a legend on Wall Street, and his predictions are widely read and circulated at the beginning of the year.

But with 2014 winding down and people starting to look ahead to what 2015 holds, it is only right that we take a look back and see how Wien did this year.

Wien calls his predictions "surprise" predictions that the average investor would only assign a one-in-three chance of happening. And following form, Wien got some of these calls really right, some of them really wrong, and only a few anywhere in-between.

We scored Wien's predictions simply: Zero points for wrong predictions, one point for correct predictions, and one-half point for predictions that were right down the middle.

We Will Have A 'Dickensian' Market — The Best Of Times, The Worst Of Times

RIGHT

Score: 1/1

Wien more or less nailed this one.

In January, Wien wrote that we'd experience a "Dickensian market with the best of times and the worst of times." And not only have we seen the S&P 500 gain more than 10% again and the bond market rally, but there is a very good chance you're not happy about it!

We saw steep correction in tech stocks in March, a similar plunge in oil and gas stocks recently, the price of oil has cratered, and in October we got our first 10% correction in two years during a violent few weeks for the market.

But then we gained it all back and then some. Quickly.

We only ding Wien a point because he saw total returns for the S&P 500 this year coming in at 20%. Right now they're at about 14%.

The US Economy Finally Breaks Out Of Its Doldrums

RIGHT

Score: 1/1

Two for two so far!

Wien said that the US economy would "break out of its doldrums" with growth exceeding 3% and the unemployment rate moving towards 6%.

In October, the unemployment rate fell to 5.8% and the most recent revision to third-quarter GDP showed the economy grew at an annualized pace of 3.9%.

In the second quarter, GDP grew at an annualized pace of 4.6%, and many on Wall Street expect fourth-quarter GDP growth to come in at around 2.5%.

The first quarter of this year saw a sharp GDP contraction, but that has been largely written off due to severe winter weather.

The US Dollar Strengthens

RIGHT

Score: 1/1

Wien saw the US dollar strengthening in 2014, with the dollar eventually trading below $1.25 against the euro and buying 120 Japanese yen.

Currently, the dollar is at $1.23 against the euro and 119.6 against the yen, and overall the dollar has enjoyed a huge bull market all year.

So this one was just dead on.

Eric Garner Protests Turn Violent In California

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Two officers were injured as a California protest over police killings turned violent with protesters smashing windows and throwing rocks and bricks at police, who responded by firing tear gas, authorities said.

Several officers were struck, but there were just two reports of injury, Berkeley police spokeswoman Jenn Coats said. A Berkeley police officer received hospital treatment for a dislocated shoulder after being hit with a sandbag, while another sustained minor injuries.

Saturday night's demonstration against police killings of unarmed black men in Missouri and New York began peacefully, the latest of several in the Bay Area in recent days. But Officer Coats said that some protesters later broke away and began throwing rocks, bottles and pipes at officers.

Scores of law officers from several surrounding agencies joined Berkeley Police Department in trying to quell unrest that went on for hours, into early Sunday morning.

Around 300 to 400 protesters took to the streets last night in Berkeley, California. The majority of the group were student protesters. The plan was to march from the University of California, Berkeley campus to Oakland's Civic Center.

A small minority of the protesters, most of them masked, began smashing the windows of nearby businesses and pelting officers with rocks, bricks, and bottles. The rest of the protesters implored them to stop.

Several businesses and at least two police cars were vandalized. Two police officers suffered minor injuries, including a dislocated shoulder.

At one point, protesters faced a wall of more than 100 police officers in riot gear. Police warned the protesters to disperse, but it did little until police began to use more heavy-handed tactics.

Police deployed tear gas to break up the crowds.

Protesters weren't the only ones to get hit by tear gas. Several concerts had just let out near the protest area and many concert-goers were affected by the gas.

Coats said several businesses on University Avenue were vandalized, including Trader Joe's, Radio Shack and a Wells Fargo Bank branch. Some squad cars were also damaged.

"A small splinter group from the original protests continues to march in Berkeley," Coats said in a statement issued around 11 p.m. PST. "Unfortunately this group has become violent and continues to throw objects, including rocks and bricks at officers."

She said officers attempting to get the crowd to depart used tear gas.

"Several dispersal orders have been given, and the crowd has ignored the orders. In response to the violence officers have utilized tear gas and smoke in an effort to disperse the crowd," she said.

Some people were still protesting in the streets early Sunday morning, police said.

Authorities did not provide further details of any injuries or arrests.

"The total number of arrests and injuries is not known at this time," Coats' statement said.Local media reports said about 300 to 400 people participated in the relatively peaceful demonstration before splinter groups broke off.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that at one point, the marchers were face-to-face with a line of about 100 police in riot gear who turned the crowd back.

The paper said that it wasn't just protesters who were hit by tear gas.

Several concerts had let out from downtown sites and concertgoers waiting to pay in a nearby garage were enveloped in a cloud of stinging gas, sending them running into elevators.

KCBS reported that police closed two Bay Area Rapid Transit commuter train stations along the protest route.

Protesters had planned to march from the University of California, Berkeley campus to Oakland's Civic Center.

Thousands of demonstrators have protested peacefully in New York and elsewhere since the announcement Wednesday that a grand jury declined to indict a white officer in the death of Eric Garner, a black man who gasped "I can't breathe!" while being placed in a chokehold as he was being arrested for selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. The decision closely followed a Ferguson, Missouri, grand jury's choice not to indict a white officer in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old.

The scope of the demonstrations and the lack of violence were moving to Garner's mother and widow, they said Saturday.

"It is just so awesome to see how the crowds are out there," said Eric Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, who added that she ended up stuck in her car after protests shut down traffic.

"I was just so proud of that crowd," Carr said. "It just warmed my heart."

Garner's widow, Esaw Garner, said she saw demonstrators from her apartment window and told her son, "Look at all the love that your father's getting."

Officers have said the outcry over the grand jury decision has left them feeling betrayed and demonized by everyone from the president and the mayor to throngs of protesters who scream at them on the street.

"Police officers feel like they are being thrown under the bus," said Patrick Lynch, president of the police union.

Garner's family members joined the Rev. Al Sharpton later Saturday as Sharpton laid a wreath at the site on Staten Island where Garner died July 17 in a confrontation that started when police tried to arrest him.

An amateur video seen by millions showed Garner gasping, "I can't breathe" during the fatal encounter.

"All we're concerned about is justice from the police," said Garner's stepfather, Benjamin Carr, who wore a T-shirt with the words, "Enough is enough."

Protests continued in New York City for a fourth day with several dozen people lying down on the floor of Grand Central Terminal and marching into stores in Times Square. There were no reports of arrests.

Protests have also been held in Philadelphia, Chicago, Miami, Las Vegas and a number of other cities.

In Seattle, several hundred people marched downtown to police headquarters Saturday. Authorities said a group then split off from the main protest and tried to get onto a roadway. Police say some protesters threw rocks at officers who blocked them from entering it. Seven were arrested.

Sharpton announced plans this week for a march in Washington, D.C., next Saturday to protest the killings of Garner, Brown and others and to press for change at the federal level.

The Apple Museum website

When Apple enthusiast Mark Peck was 14 he started collecting classic Apple computers.

To share his collection with the world, Peck created the website "The Apple Museum," which features everything from an original Macintosh with the signatures of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak engraved inside.

"I acquired the vast majority of my collection for free or very cheap, from individuals and flee market sellers looking to get rid of what they saw as junk," Peck told Business Insider in an email.

Here's the best of Peck's collection.

This is the Apple Lisa, which launched in 1983.

After the Lisa, Apple released the Macintosh, the first affordable personal computer with a mouse and graphical user interface (which was based on the Lisa).

Inside of every original Macintosh computer are the signatures of the Apple team responsible for the iconic computer. "The signatures were etched into the form used to cast the plastic shells on the production line, so every Macintosh has an identical set," said Peck.
