AGE DISCRIMINATION ON TV: 10 Anchors Who Were Replaced By Younger Women

$

vicky gutierrez

Former Telemundo reporter and anchor Vicky Gutierrez is suing the Spanish-language channel and parent company NBC Universal for age discrimination.

In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Gutierrez claims she was let go because she reached 50, and was replaced by a much younger woman to attract better ratings at a lower cost to the network. Gutierrez worked at LA station KVEA since 2003.

According to the suit, the network claims to have "laid her off." However, Gutierrez claims in the suit she was actually terminated, citing reasons she was let go as "multiple complaints about the working conditions at KVEA and she was an older female earning too much money."

This isn't the first time an older female anchor was ousted in favor of a younger face.

1983: Christine Craft became the first woman to sue for age and sex discrimination.

Craft filed a suit after receiving a demotion at ABC affiliate KMBC-TV in Kansas City.

According to testimony from the trial, Craft was told she was demoted to reporter in 1979 because focus group research found she was "too old, too unattractive and wouldn't defer to men."

After a trial at Federal District Court in Kansas City, Craft was awarded $500,000.

1999: Janet Peckinpaugh was awarded $3.79 million after suing a network for a demotion.

Peckinpaugh accused Post-Newsweek Stations' CBS station Channel 3 of backing out on a promise to employ her for life.

She claimed the network discriminated against both her age and sex after a demotion in 1994 and firing her in 1995.

Peckinpaugh said she earned $250,000 per year as an anchor.

Post-Newsweek was found guilty of sex discrimination, breach of written and oral promises, and illegal retaliation.

She was originally awarded $8.3 million in January 1999, but that number was lowered to $3.79 million in March of '99. The number was later raised again to $4.9 million in July '99.

2002: Carol Kaplan filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against WGRZ-TV Buffalo.

In a lawsuit filed, Kaplan accused a station executive of saying she could replace her with a "younger and prettier" woman.

The case was dismissed after Federal Judge John Curtin said there wasn't enough evidence for the discrimination claims to hold up. Bazi Kanani was hired in her place.

Kaplan anchored the 5 p.m. news for the Multimedia Entertainment owned station for 11 years.

The Port Authority and The Durst Organization have just released a whole bunch of new renderings of One World Trade Center and it looks like a knockout.

A false fire report at the site notwithstanding, construction at One World Trade is moving along. It officially became the tallest building in New York City in late April, and will rise 1,776 feet upon its completion in early 2014.

Condé Nast will be a major tenant in the 3 million-square-foot buildingthe publishing company leased nearly 1.2 million square feet across 25 floors. Vantone China Center and the federal General Services Administration have also signed leases, bringing the building to 55 percent occupancy, according to the Port Authority.

The new renderings show the building from every possible angle and offer a glimpse at what the interior will look like. They also incorporate some new design features.

20 Photos That Prove Hillary Clinton Is A Total Badass

hillary clinton africa

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton let loose on the dance floor at a state dinner in South Africa Tuesday night, shoring up her reputation as the country's wildest ex-First Lady and sparking a fresh round of 2016 hopes among her growing fan club.

Clinton has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity this year, with her favorability rating hitting a historic 20-year high after her unforgettable Conga line in Cartagena and the emergence of the "Texts From Hillary" Tumblr this April.

The truth is, Clinton has always been kind of rad. Here are 20 pictures that show why she's a total badass.

Because she can really dance.

Because she can wink. Clinton winked at a committee member when she testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in May 2012.

Because a store is named after her. On a visit to Kosovo, a local store changed its name in her honor in October 2010.

hungary saves iceland shot in olympic handball

Handball has become the cult sport of the 2012 Olympics. And today, we had the most thrilling moment of the men's tournament.

Iceland led its quarterfinal game against Hungary 27-26 and was shooting a penalty shot with 12 seconds left.

No way they could lose that, right?

Wrong.

A hectic sequences ensued, and Hungary eventually won the game in overtime.

Iceland — which has never won a summer Olympic gold medal — has a great handball team. But they yet again missed a chance at gold in heartbreaking fashion.

Iceland looks to have the game wrapped up. They were up 27-26 with 21 seconds left, and they had the ball (there is no shot clock)

Iceland then got ANOTHER break with 12 seconds left, when they were awarded a penalty shot on this foul (Iceland in red)

All they had to do was score the penalty shot, and they'd go to the semifinals

Aly Raisman

The women's gymnastics balance beam concluded with one of the most dramatic and tense moments of the Olympics.

After initially finishing fourth, Aly Raisman was awarded the bronze medal when her coach, at the urging of Bela Karolyi, filed a protest, arguing that Raisman did not get full credit for her routine.

But Mihai Brestyan, who had never previously filed a protest, only had five minutes to file the enquiry, and felt he did not have time to locate and retrieve his pre-filled protest form. Instead, he was able to get a new form, find a pen, and submit the protest in time.

On the next few pages we will take a closer look at how the tense moments played out.

When Aly finished her routine, everybody knew it was going to be close for a medal

Khalid Shudooh was a football player and honor student who had lived in the U.S. since he was four and his family moved from Jordan.

But when his father fell on tough times and left the country, Khalid lost his visa. He stayed in the U.S., the only country he'd ever known, supporting himself and going to high school.

His freshman year of college, U.S. marshals came to his house and arrested him. He was thrown into prison with drug dealers and thieves.

With his bail set at $250,000 and his family overseas, Khalid didn't have many options.

Khalid Shudooh was born in Jordan. When he was 4, his father accepted a scholarship at the University of Wisconsin, and the entire family moved.

Khalid adapted quickly and pretty soon couldn't even remember his native Arabic. He's seen here in kindergarten.

Khalid said he's felt like an American for as long as he could remember. When he visited Jordan as a kid, he said he felt out-of-place.

Blackjack cards casino gambling

Casinos had a rough couple of years following the latest U.S. recession, but the numbers are turning up.

According to a new report from the American Gaming Association titled "State of the States: The 2012 AGA Survey of Casino Entertainment," casinos in the U.S. brought in a total of $35.64 billion of revenues in 2011 and "returned $7.93 billion of those revenues to states and localities in the form of direct gaming taxes — a 4.5 percent increase over 2010 totals."

13 out of the 22 states in which casinos are legal posted increases in tax revenues year over year.

Some of the increases were due to new casino openings – the report says that "in Maryland, the addition of a second casino and the first full year of operations at the first drove a 464.2 percent increase. New casinos in Kansas and New York led to increases of 38.0 percent and 17.9 percent, respectively."

North Carolina Teen Goes On The Ultimate Gap Year Trip

DNU joe baker gap year

Instead of heading directly to college after high school graduation, Joe Baker and Reade Paterno of Chapel Hill, NC decided to take a "gap year" and travel the world.

Read about Joe's decision to take a gap year >>

They waited tables for more than a year to raise funds for the nine-month trip, which took them to 11 countries across three continents. Baker saved around $9,000 before leaving; his grandfather donated another $8,000.

While they didn't nail down many specifics beforehand, the pair bought several major flights ahead of time. They tried to stick to a strict budget, at times eating only bread and eggs to conserve funds. Baker said he ran out of cash just a day or two before his family met him in Spain for the last leg of his journey.

Baker shared some photos highlighting the best moments of his travels, which he explains here in his own words. Click through to see what his gap year was like.

This is Reade and me at the very beginning of the trip as we were just figuring everything out. We decided that we wanted to get at least one souvenir from each country, so in Peru we could not resist the Bill Cosby-esque sweaters made from baby alpaca wool.

This is the beautiful view we had from our hostel room, overlooking the city of Cusco as the sun went down with the mountains in the background.

These baby alpacas are just as soft as the wool they provided for our sweaters. Groups of women would wander the city with their herds of alpacas and for a small price allow travelers to take a photo with them.

19 Things The Millionaire Next Door Won't Tell You

tamara ecclestone, billionaire, heiress

That’s right.  Although having a million bucks isn’t as impressive as it once was, it’s still nothing to sneeze at.

In fact, Reuters reports that in 2009 there were 7.8 million millionaires in the United States.

See what your millionaire neighbor won't tell you >

That’s a lot of people, people.  And the odds are one or two of them are living near you.

Heck, one of them might even be your neighbor.  In fact, the odds are very good that it is your neighbor.

But, Len, you don’t know my neighbor.  That guy doesn’t look anything like a millionaire.

Well, guess what?  Your suburban millionaire neighbor called (oh yeah, we go way back) and the two of us had a nice little chat.

Here’s a few things he shared with me – but apparently doesn’t want to tell you.  (No offense, I’m sure.)

See what your millionaire neighbor won't tell you >

He always spends less than he earns

In fact his mantra is, over the long run, you’re better off if you strive to be anonymously rich rather than deceptively poor.

From LenPenzo.com

He knows that patience is a virtue

The odds are you won’t become a millionaire overnight.  If you’re like him, your wealth will be accumulated gradually by diligently saving your money over multiple decades.

From LenPenzo.com

He serves his guests inexpensive coffee

When you go to his modest three-bed two-bath house, you’re going to be drinking Folgers instead of Starbucks.

And if you need a lift, well, you’re going to get a ride in his ten-year-old economy sedan.  And if you think that makes him cheap, ask him if he cares.  (He doesn’t.)

The drought is causing agricultural commodity prices to go haywire.

But where are things heading next?

Morgan Stanley's commodities team has addressed five pressing questions that the current commodities investing environment has prompted.

Read on to see Morgan Stanley's recommendations for how to see through the messy commodities weather.

How high will corn prices go?

Prices could reach double digits thanks to ongoing weather concerns and inelastic ethanol demand. Upstream agricultural equities stand to benefit most. Corn prices are currently around $8.00 per bushel.

What's the outlook for sugar prices?

There's still likely to be a production surplus, and MS is forecasting sugar prices to fall from $0.19/lb for 2012/2013 compared with $0.21/lb currently.

Will chicken prices rise to offset feed cost inflation?

No. Prices would need to average $0.83/lb for the industry to be profitable over the next twelve months, versus $0.73/lb in the last twelve months. MS expects chicken to be an unprofitable business for some time and remains underweight Tyson and Sanderson Farms and equal-weight Brasil Foods S.A..

Meet Boo, 'The World's Cutest Dog'—And The Secret Facebook Employee Behind Him

$

boo the dog

Today, a great world mystery was solved by Mike Isaac, a writer at tech news site AllThingsD.

Isaac unmasked the owner of Boo, "the world's cutest dog."

No, really. Boo is the world's cutest dog. Google it. Or check out the book that came out last year.

According to Isaac, Boo belongs to Irene Ahn, a finance lead at Facebook. She joined the company in 2008 from Yahoo.

Ahn's identity as Boo's "mom" has never been revealed before. She's used the stage name J.H. Lee to keep the spotlight on her dog.

Boo is known around the world with nearly 5 million Facebook fans. We spoke to Boo's publicist at Chronicle Books, April Whitney, to get some more color.

Whitney says not many people get rich publishing books, but according to her, Boo's first book was "pretty successful."

The $12.95 title went to market last summer and has since been published in ten languages—Portuguese, Finnish, French, German, Norwegian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, and a Chinese-language edition sold in Taiwan.

Thanks to the success of Boo's first book, he has a second that will be released soon called Boo: Little Dog In The Big City. It's about Boo and his friend Buddy talking on their city, San Francisco, and it will also retail for $12.95.

Chronicle Books has also released a calendar for Boo, which sells for $13.99. In addition, Boo has a line of Gund stuffed animals coming out and an A-B-C book for children.

While Whitney didn't confirm Ahn as the owner, she did talk a little bit about Boo's owner. Boo and his owner live in San Francisco. She also says Boo's owner never sought fame or fortune.

"She didn't contact us, we contacted her when Boo only had 60,000 Facebook fans," says Whitney. "It might appear to people like she's creating all these things for Boo, but the only online presence she's made for him is his Facebook page."

Whitney says everything else that's online about Boo, including his Twitter account, his YouTube videos, and his website, are fake.

Ok, now here's the good part.

In case you don't believe us, Boo actually is the cutest dog in the world, according to Google.

This is Boo's Facebook page. It's the only online profile Ahn has ever made for Boo. Everything else, including his website, YouTube videos, and Twitter handle are fake or run by fans.

This is Irene Ahn, the woman who owns Boo. She is a finance lead at Facebook. She joined the company from Yahoo in December 2008.

Meet The Leaders Of America's Twisted White Power Movement

$

virginia abernethy white nationalist

Before Wade Michael Page killed six people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, he appeared on anti-hate groups' watch lists.

The Southern Poverty Law Center and The Anti-Discrimination League monitored Page's involvement with white supremacist groups – including his own white power band.

With that in mind, we thought we'd check out who else has a spot in the SPLC's Intelligence Files. That list includes everyone from Ku Klux Klan leaders to former college professors.

Keep in mind, we are not accusing any of these people of crimes or implying that they might commit crimes. We are simply reporting their inclusion in SPLC's intelligence files, and why they merited that inclusion.

Business Insider attempted to reach all of the individuals for whom we could find contact information. We did not immediately hear back from anybody on the list.

April Gaede is one of the most famous Neo-Nazi stage moms.

Gaede, who has been linked to white supremacist group National Vanguard and the neo-Nazi National Alliance, has reportedly raised her daughters to embrace the neo-Nazi culture.

She even went so far as to create the white supremacist band Prussian Blue in which her daughters Lamb and Lynx performed, according to the SPLC.

However, after her daughters had a change of heart — Lamb and Lynx told The Daily in 2011 they weren't  white nationalists anymore — Gaede moved on to a new career: matchmaking.

She advertised her dating service, for white nationals only of course, in 2010 on the white supremacist site Stormfront.org.

"I have many references throughout WNism [white nationalism] as well as from this board who will vouch for my sincerity and my loyalty to our cause, the 14 words, and the future of our race," she wrote in her Stormfront.org posting.

“I find other races annoying. …," SPLC has quoted Gaede as saying. "I don’t like their chattering in other languages, I don’t like the way they look. I mean, 99% of them, they’re just not pretty. I don’t want to be around them. I don’t like the fact they seem to make everything just dirty and messy wherever they are. I don’t like to be around them. I want to be around all white people.”

Jeff Berry served as the imperial wizard of the American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

During his time leading the KKK, Berry welcomed thugs and criminals into the fold, creating the "bully-boy Klan," according to the SPLC.

In a 2005 interview with TheLiberator.net, Berry said the Klan "is in existence for equal rights."

"We're not against Blacks," he added. "We're against n-----s." He defined that term as people who take away from society without giving anything back.

Berry called being white "the most proud thing there is."

"But don't degrade me or call me a racist because I'm proud of my race," he said. "I'm proud of being White."

Berry went to prison in 2001 after he held two reporters at gunpoint, according to the SPLC.

Randal Lee Krager founded Volksfront, a neo-Nazi website.

Krager has been active in the skinhead movement since he was 15.

As a 15-year-old in 1989, Krager was sent to a juvenile detention center for allegedly attacking three teenagers, according to SPLC.

He's so embedded in the culture he reportedly has a swastika tattoo on his neck and the knuckles on his right hand bear the word "FEAR." He created Volksfront while serving time in prison for assaulting a black man, according to the SPLC.

Volksfront bills itself as the "most disciplined and active European cultural association in the world."
