14 Survival Tips For The Office Holiday Party

santacon nyc subway drunk alcohol

The company holiday party presents an interesting challenge for people who want to let loose and enjoy the company of their coworkers without damaging their reputation.

Here are 14 tips to make sure your office holiday party is an unmitigated success.

This post is an updated version of a story originally written by Vivian Giang.

Ask about the dress code ahead of time.

You need to find out what the dress code is and stick to it, career coach Barbara Pachter tells Business Insider.

Pachter, the author of "The Essentials of Business Etiquette," says you don't want people talking about what you wore the day or night after the party. Whatever you wear, remember that it's still a business event.

Aside from the company's dress code, don't forget that behavior and harassment policies still apply— even if the party is off-site.

Don't go on an empty stomach.

Although there might be hors d'oeuvres, you should still eat at least a little bit before the party begins. If not, you may become more intoxicated than you intended. Furthermore, eating while you're mingling isn't the most comfortable in a professional setting.

"Eat a little before you go to a business social event," says Pachter. "If you drink, you'll have something in your stomach, and if the food is delayed, you won't be hungry."

Don't even think about skipping the party.

To show that you're committed to the company, make sure you show up for at least 30 minutes. Always assume company gatherings are "must attend" events.

Garbage Collectors Share The Most Bizarre Things They’ve Ever Found On The Job

0

Garbage Man

Working as a garbage collector, janitor, or in any sort of waste management job means you develop an eye for finding bizarre things that people throw away.

In a recent /r/AskReddit thread, garbage collectors shared what was the most illegal, strange, or valuable thing they've ever seen while gathering trash.

Not only do these people do an essential job, but it turns out they're also treasure hunters.

You'll be shocked at some of the things they find, from iPhones to porn (obviously). Keep reading to see their answers.

1. Mountain bikes and Egyptian papyrus paintings

“Two Egyptian Papyrus paintings, framed. Three mountain bikes — one had a loose rear axle (tightened the nut, had it fixed in seconds), the others had flat tires. 12 working VCRs (this was in 2002 — I still have 8 of them.) An entire box of new-in-wrapper embossed steel Rolling Rock Beer signs. Sold them on Ebay for over $300.

“I think the most useful thing I found was a 15-foot logging chain. It must have weighed 40 pounds, and I use it on my tractor.” - Phantom_Scarecrow

2. "Every tool you would ever need"

tools

“A working PS3. A working iPhone 4 (this was before the 5 was introduced), two laptop computers (monitors were broken, and nothing else), multiple desktop PCs, an FM transmitter, every tool you would ever need, an N64 with a few games, five bottles of unopened hard liquor, all sorts of hunting equipment, and furniture. Lots of good furniture that I ended up refurbishing and selling." captainfantastyk

3. (Working) Stereo

“I was a garbage pick up man during college. One day I found a really nice stereo with a three disk changer, two speakers, and a sub-woofer. I don't know why they threw it out! It's worked perfectly for me for three years!” - dforderp

4. Designer goods

“I’m not a garbage man, but I used to do security at a wealthy apartment complex. I started to go through the trash after I found an oven that worked. Ladies would throw away $100-$200 brand new purses. Gucci, Prada, Armani glasses just because they had tiny, tiny scratches on them. This one art teacher would throw away art supplies. This one guy threw away all his bongs and pipes, grinders. Food that was months away from its expiration date. Brand new clothes with the tags still attached. I was literally finding free money.” - MaxRandom

5. "Someone's entire record collection"

“Best find: someone's entire record collection. Probably three tall pallets of records. Had to be at least 1,000+ records. I kept all of them.” - ralph122030

6. Tag Heuer watch

TAG Heuer“My father in law is a bin man here in Northern Ireland. He is forever bringing home stuff he finds on his rounds, most recently a Tag Heuer watch and more iPhones than you could shake a stick at.” - GoodnightKevin

7. Arcade tokens

“This was in the ‘90s: My friend's dad found a big sack full of arcade tokens. Not sure how it is now, but back then the tokens were mostly standardized. My friend was in heaven.” - theoptionexplicit

8. Porn

“Found a massive collection of porn and sex toys. We took all the porn and split it amongst about 15 of us.” - daywalker666

10. Snowboards and money

“The main garbage man had a room in his house dedicated to the things he found. From $400 snowboards to full toolboxes and audio systems. And the truck driver made about an extra $500 every two months from recycling cans people would throw out. I also stumbled across a $100 bill once at the landfill.” - captainfantastyk

11. Electronics

“A friend of mine worked for garbage collecting and later at a sorting facility. He made a very decent business selling all sorts of electronics and appliances people would leave at the free drop-off point.

"He had hundreds of old computers. Commodores, Amigas, old Mac's and gaming consoles (pre PS/Xbox). He'd switch around the dead parts (if any), re-solder components, clean everything in some alcohol solution where you dip the whole chip board. He even used some sort of chemical that would de-age the plastic. You know how old plastic goes all yellow, he wiped this solution on it and left for a day or so and it would look just like new.” - micge

11. WWII code-breaking machine

Four rotor enigma machine world war II code"My good friend who used to work at a recycling plant found an Enigma machine. That's an encryption device the Nazis used. It was worth $10,000.” - DarkPasta

12. Furniture

“My grandfather used to work at the dump. My family called it the road 120 hardware store. He brought everything home. Tools galore, all kinds of metal for recycling, furniture, decorative odds and ends. He built my sister and me a playhouse outside that was entirely furnished with people's junk. Child sized table and chairs, a tiny TV and radio, loads of toys that just needed a little scrubbing. My grandparents had a yearly garage sale with all the findings they didn't want and made hundreds of dollars.” - tempertantrums

2014 Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition®

For 11 years, Olympus has held the BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition, showcasing the work of people with an eye toward the world's smallest things.

Entrants unveil the world of the tiny with images and videos that must be visually appealing, technically challenging, and scientifically stunning.

Since the contest's beginning, there have been thousands of spectacular entries illuminating the microscopic world; this year's best images are no exception.

This isn't a flower you're seeing, but the eggs of a louse fly being protected by what is likely a parent. These louse flies often turn up in bird's nests throughout Europe and Asia and, when hatched, feed off of bird's blood. Yousef Al Habshi took this amazing image. This is one of of the many honorable mentions in the competition; we've selected 12 to include here.

This little guy, as you might have guessed, is invisible to the human eye. Measuring in at between 0.0020 to 0.0130 inches, the Paramecium is often used in the lab to study biological processes because some species are easy to induce reproduction and division. Arturo Agostino took this image.

Dr. Katie Matho snapped this colorful shot of Brainbow mice neurons. Brainbow mice have been designed so that neurons randomly choose combinations of red, yellow, and cyan fluorescent proteins. Each one glows a specific color, which enables scientists to visualize brain circuits, explains Matho.

john brennan

John Brennan just turned 30. During his 20s, he founded and sold a startup, BuzzTable, to Sysco Foods for an undisclosed sum, likely a few million dollars.

As Brennan described it to Business Insider in an email, "It's enough to take some time off to recharge and give back to the startup/int'l development communities, but you wont see me in a private jet anytime soon."

Brennan learned a lot about business and life during his 20s and wanted to help other early-stage entrepreneurs figure everything out. So he wrote down all his advice in a 163-slideshow presentation.

"Most people do something crazy after they sell a company/turn 30," Brennan tells Business Insider. "I chose to write about everything I've learned this past decade with the intention that others could benefit."

Here's Brennan's advice on business, relationships, investing, and health. The first section covers all business advice. The second section, which begins on slide 91, covers life advice.

Hulu's Enormous Los Angeles Offices Were Designed With Fun In Mind

hulu officeWhen Hulu's design team began work on its new headquarters in Los Angeles, it had a few major things to consider.

"We're all about embracing fun. The facility needed to reflect that," Jim O'Gorman, Hulu's SVP of Talent and Organization, said to Business Insider. "This is a meritocracy — everyone has the same desk and the same chair."

Architecture firm Gensler worked with Hulu to design its new 90,000-square-foot space in Santa Monica. They moved in to the space last fall.

Employees got to vote on nearly every aspect of the design, from the style of chair they would get to the types of cereal that would be available in the kitchen.

It looks like they definitely had some fun along the way.

The Hulu team certainly likes puns. The entrance to the "Hulubratory" grabs your attention as soon as you get off the elevator.

We picked a few of our favorite YouTubers and found the videos that skyrocketed them to success.

You'll recognize a few: Bethany Mota, PewDiePie, and even Justin Bieber, who got his start posting a cover of a Chris Brown song to YouTube.

But if there's one thing that's certain — they've all come a long way over the years.

PewDiePie, who is the undisputed King of YouTube with over 32 million subscribers, had his first hit with this video called "Fun With Minecraft Multiplayer."

Bethany Mota, who has built an empire off of her beauty and style videos, was attracting thousands of viewers from the very beginning of her YouTube journey in early 2010. But it was this video addressing bullying and her experiences with bullying that drew in tons of viewers who related to her.

The Era Of Cuba's Classic American Cars May Be Coming To An End

Cuba Cars

With the easing of trade restrictions and the normalization of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba on the way, the days of Cuba's classic American cars may be coming to an end.

Since the imposition of the US trade embargo in 1961, massive fleets of pre-revolution American cars have remained on the road through the ingenuity of the country's auto mechanics.

The fate of these wonderful, glorious, and sometimes wacky rides remain unknown. In the meantime, take a look at some of Cuba's awesome retro rides.

Since the 1961 Cuba trade embargo, the island nation has held onto its massive fleet car from the 1940s and 50s.

The New York Times estimates that in 2004, there were as many as 60,000 of these rolling relics on the road.

Since the end of the Cold War, these aging rides were pressed into taxi duty to help supplement the Cuba's insufficient public transit system.

From Start To Finish, This Is How Beacons Send Ads To Your Phone While You're Shopping

0

Beacon from InMarket

Much has been written about the rise and rise of beacons, the tiny little devices placed inside stores and even phone boxes that transmit Bluetooth low-energy signals to send ad messages to consumers’ mobile phones.

But to those who suddenly see a message from a brand pop up when they are looking at their mobiles inside that same brand's store, it can be confusing as to how the store knows you're in there.

We asked inMarket, a mobile marketing agency, exactly how much planning goes into a beacon campaign and how the technology works. They gave us a step-by-step insight into a holiday beacon campaign currently running for the agency’s client Sun Pacific.

SEE ALSO: Now Instagram Is Dominating Twitter In Another Hugely Important Way

As with any ad campaign, it starts with the brief. Sun Pacific wanted to encourage mom to add Cuties Clementines to her grocery list as well as prompt her to try Mighties Kiwi, a newly branded fruit. The agency concocts the exact target customer and calls her Jennifer.

The agency and Sun Pacific decide beacons will be the best way to reach Jennifer, as she's often out shopping with her mobile in hand. A beacon is a small wireless device that constantly broadcasts radio signals to nearby smartphones and tablets. Think of it as a lighthouse, which emits light in regular intervals.

That signal is detected by nearby smartphones and tablets that have Bluetooth switched on and beacon-enabled apps. The proximity can stretch to an entire store or just a particular shelf.

The 10 Best Corporate Logo Changes Of 2014

0
0

mls

Many popular brands completely revamped their logos this year.

We went through graphic-design collective UnderConsiderations' Brand New blog to see which brands decided to reinvent themselves, and chose our favorite redesigns. All opinions are our own.

10. Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut decided to get hip this year, all the way down to making employee uniforms fitted T-shirts and flannels. Its new circular logo evokes a splash of tomato sauce in pizza dough and works well with the overall rebrand.

9. PayPal

The old PayPal logo was stale and outdated. The new one manages to be instantly recognizable but is brighter and looks especially good as a smartphone-app icon.

8. Reebok

If you grew up wearing Reebok Pumps, you may be furious to see the classic Reebok logo go — but don't worry, it lives on in the retro Reebok Classics brand. For its main brand, Reebok has stopped trying to play catchup to Nike in professional sports and is instead focusing on ordinary people who are dedicated to fitness, especially CrossFit fans. The new logo isn't the most original design, but it's clean and looks good on the new workout gear.

Here Are The 4 New Breeds Of Dogs

0
0

Four new dogs have been declared “recognized breeds” by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

The announcement came on Wednesday that the Spanish water dog (a farm and fishing dog), the Bergamasco (an Italian sheepdog with a matted coat), the Boerboel (a South African watchdog), and the Cirneco dell’Etna (a Sicilian rabbit-hunting breed) will now be eligible to compete in any AKC-sanctioned dog show.

Criteria includes having several hundred of the dog breed nationwide.

spanish water dogThe Spanish water dog is an ancient breed of dog with it’s earliest ancestor dating back to the Iberian Peninsula in 1110 AD and some of these dogs can still be found working in the mountain of southern Andalusia herding cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep, according to the AKC. They are herding dogs who are extremely athletic and lively, plus very loyal to their family.

Bergamasco dogThe Bergamasco has ancestor from Iran, and primarily worked as a livestock guardian for shepherds. They’re highly intelligent and sociable, but primarily known for their thickly matted fur that contains “dog hair,” “goat hair,” and “wool,” according to the AKC. Though it may look high maintenance, the coat only needs 1-3 baths per year and no brushing after it “sets” at age 1.

boerboel dogThe Boerboel was a farm dog for pioneers in South Africa since the seventieth century, according to the AKC. They’re a large, confident breed of dog that is calm and loyal with its owner, but extremely protective (they used to guard against predators and would hold down wounded game).

Cirneco dell’Etna dogThe Cirneco dell’Etna is a small dog that has been in Sicily for over 2,500 years, according to the AKC. It hunts small animals and fowl, and excels in tough conditions like high heart, on rugged terrain, and with little food or water —in other words, this dog would do well in a natural disaster.

All four of these dogs will join the other 180 AKC-recognized breeds officially on January 1, 2015.

Unfortunately, though the breeds are now AKC-sanctioned, they are not allowed to compete in the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club show until 2016, according to the Associate Press.

These Will Be The 12 Biggest Movies Of 2015

0
0

avengers age of ultron captain america thor2015 is going to be one of the biggest years at the box office in a long time.

Not only are we getting a new "Star Wars" movie, but we'll finally see the next "Avengers" grouping, which has been nearly three years in the making.

Those two movies alone have the potential of being billion-dollar films.

In comparison, 2014 only had one movie gross $1 billion— "Transformers: Age of Extinction."

Through plenty of sequels and reboots, we're counting down the movies that will be the biggest at theaters next year. It's going to feel like the early '90s with Arnold Schwarzenegger back as the Terminator and dinosaurs roaming around in "Jurassic World."

Mark these dates down in your calendar.

12. 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (Universal/Focus Features)

Release date:
Feb. 13, 2015

Why it will be huge: This will be the movie every guy will be dragged to see.

The best-selling book series dubbed "mommy porn" is making its big screen debut Valentine's Day weekend. There couldn't be a better release date for the erotica film about a naive college girl (Dakota Johnson) who becomes involved in a BDSM relationship with a billionaire named Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan).

While the film's trailer was the most-viewed all year, there are two reasons "Fifty Shades" is lower on our list. 1. Big blockbusters rarely come out in this month. "Passion of the Christ" currently holds the record for largest Feb. gross ($611.9 million). 2. Erotica movies are usually a niche group. 1992's "Basic Instinct" is the highest-grossing film in the genre making $352.9 million worldwide.

11. 'Ted 2' (Universal)

Release date:
June 26, 2015

Why it will be huge: "Ted," featuring Seth MacFarlane's foul-mouthed teddy bear and Mark Wahlberg, became the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy ever in 2012. It surpassed the record previously held by the first "Hangover.""Ted" made $549 million worldwide.

10. 'Inside Out' (Pixar/Disney)

Release date:
June 19, 2015

Why it will be huge: Pixar's reputation speaks for itself. The studio hasn't made a bad film yet (except perhaps the poorly-reviewed "Cars 2"). Regardless, none of them have been bombs and the majority of Pixar's animated movies make at least $500 million worldwide at theaters.

Buzz about its next animated picture, "Inside Out," is already growing. While the movie's concept about the inner workings of the brain and our emotions may sound a bit confusing, an early sneak peek of the film was very well received at the Animation Film Festival in France back in June.

Here's Why The $1.5 Million Pagani Huayra Is Worth The Money

0
0

2013 pagani huayra

The Pagani Huayra supercar has been with for us for about two years now.

It was the much-anticipated successor to the Zonda, considered by some to be the best new supercar since Ferrari and Lamborghini defined the concept several decades ago.

The name "Huayra" comes from the Incan term for "God of the Winds," and Horacio Pagani, the carmaker Car & Driver called a "maniacally obsessed perfectionist," says it was inspired by a jet barreling down the runway just before taking off.

The Huayra costs about $1.5 million, which is a lot of money for a machine that can rarely be used to its full, 230 mph capacity. But you can now finally get one in the U.S., according to Automobile Magazine.

Apart from the six pieces of fitted luggage that come with the Huayra, there are plenty of ways to justify the sky high price tag.

[An earlier version of this article was written by Alex Davies.]

Each 6.0-liter, twin turbo V12 engine is individually hand crafted.

The 720 horsepower the Huayra produces send it from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds.

At around 3,200 pounds, it's a light car.

Nat Geo shared the images with us here.

Grand Prize and People Winner: “A Node Glows in the Dark," Brian Yen, Hong Kong

"In the last ten years, mobile data, smartphones, and social networks have forever changed our existence. Although this woman stood at the center of a jam-packed train, the warm glow from her phone told the strangers around her that she wasn't really there. She managed to slip away from "here" for a short moment; she's a node flickering on the social web, roaming the Earth, free as a butterfly. Our existence is no longer stuck to the physical here; we're free to run away, and run we will."

Nature Winner: “The Great Migration," Nicole Cambré, North Serengeti, Tanzania

"Jump of the wildebeest at the Mara River."

Places Winner: “Bathing in Budapest,” Triston Yeo, Budapest, Hungary

"The thermal spas in Budapest [are] one of the favorite activities of Hungarians, especially in winter. We were fortunate to gain special access to shoot in the thermal spa thanks to our tour guide, Gabor. I love the mist, caused by the great difference in temperature between the hot spa water and the atmosphere. It makes the entire spa experience more surreal and mystical."
