The 9 Worst Oscar Snubs Of All Time

$
0
0

GoodFellas Robert De Niro

The voting board that comprises the Academy Awards has a long and storied history of bricking it when it comes to both nominations and the actual award, going back decades.

This year, weep for David Oyelowo, other neglected stars from Selma, and the like who came up with lint in their pockets and bare spaces on their shelves this year, but also keep in mind that they've just joined a prestigious crop of films, actors, and directors who've been frustratingly overlooked in years past.

Here are some of the most glaring moments in history when the Academy gave the statue to the wrong people.

The most epic Oscar snubs ever >>

More From Complex:

'Pulp Fiction'

Snubbed for: Best Picture; Best Director (Quentin Tarantino)
Lost toForrest Gump; Robert Zemeckis
Year1995

Does any film elicit awards remorse more than the perfectly basic TNT staple "Forrest Gump"? It's a good movie, and props to Tom Hanks for flourishing in the easy awards route Robert Downey Jr. would later detail perfectly in what we shall now refer to as the "Tropic Thunder" Theorem, but something's got to give.

"Pulp Fiction's" screenplay was duly honored, but, considering the ways in which it would go on to influence film (and in some cases, be straight up swaggerjacked), Quentin Tarantino's first masterpiece deserved every award it was nominated for.

And if a loss for the Big Two was in the cards, then at the very least not to a veritable Hallmark movie and its director. The world still waits for the Academy to finally give QT that Best Director statue he deserves.

'Raging Bull'

Snubbed for: Best Picture; Best Director (Martin Scorsese)
Lost toOrdinary People; Robert Redford
Year: 1981

If "Goodfellas" isn't Marty's best, then the next logical choice is his boxing epic with his favorite actor collaborator, De Niro the god.

At least the Academy recognized the greatness in that performance, but when it came down to the Big Two they instead chose to honor ... Robert Redford's Suburban Problems melodrama. Just an early entry in many head-scratching Scorsese Snubs.

'Memento'

Snubbed for: Best Screenplay
Lost to: "Gosford Park"
Year: 2002

Christopher Nolan had a way to climb before achieving his God Level status today when he hit us over the head with the narratively trippy "Memento."

But if there's one area where his early genius couldn't be ignored, it's in the precisely-plotted, breathtakingly twisty script. "Gosford Park" is more fire from a fellow auteur in Robert Altman, but it's also a Clue send-up that nobody remembers half as fondly.

Step Inside The Odd World Of The Big Apple Circus, Where Performers Live, Train, And Find Love

BAC intro hurrayAll over the United States, the arrival of the circus is an anticipated yearly event, met with excitement by people of all ages, and forgotten once the tent is dismantled and the act leaves town.

But for the performers — the ones who wow us with their daring feats and make us laugh with their slapstick humor — the circus is more than just a fleeting spectacle to see once a year. For them, the circus is a family, a career, and a way of life.

In mid-January, one of the most acclaimed circuses on earth, the Big Apple Circus, took down its tents at Manhattan's Lincoln Center, ending another successful run of shows. Before they headed off to do it all again in Bridgewater, New Jersey, we met with a few of the star performers to see what circus life is like behind the big top.

Every year for the past 38 years, New York's historic Big Apple Circus has performed over 300 shows in five different venues on the East Coast. During its Manhattan run, which ended last week, circus performers put on 135 shows and entertained over 162,000 fans in a one-ring tent behind Lincoln Center.

For its performers, the circus is a way of life and a career path. We had the chance to go behind the curtain of Big Apple Circus three days before it departed for New Jersey, to chat with the cast.

Traveling 10 to 11 months out of the year, life on the road can be lonely and unstable. Fortunately, troupe members become surrogate families.

Lobby

Luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas Cruises just pulled the curtain off its new ship, which is being called "the most luxurious cruise ship ever."

And that's not an empty boast. The Explorer is filled bow to stern with as much luxury as you could possibly ask for. All the rooms in the ship are suites with balconies and everything included.

Plus, one of the megasuites measures almost 3,900 square feet — 50% bigger than the average American home, according to USA Today — and will cost $5,000 per person per night.

There's also plenty of luxury outside the bedrooms. The 56,000-ton liner includes a casino, a library, and three specialty restaurants, as well as a main dining room.

The Explorer will make its maiden voyage in July 2016, but you can already reserve your space in history — Regent is taking reservations for the inaugural season now.

Welcome aboard the Seven Seas Explorer. Its builders, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, are already calling it "the most luxurious cruise ship ever built."

The ship will only have room for 750 guests, and claims to have the highest staff-to-passenger ratio in the business. This is the super-opulent lobby of the ship.

The Observation Lounge is a few decks up. It sports a silver-and-gold color scheme that Seven Seas calls "ripped form the pages of 'The Great Gatsby.'" The lounge also features a dance floor and floor-to-ceiling windows for a spectacular ocean view.

John Oliver Rogers, cornell student

Nearly 15,000 students attend Cornell University, an Ivy League college set against the rolling hills and gorges of Ithaca, New York.

Getting in is no easy feat; just 15% of applicants are accepted, and a great majority graduated in the top 10% of their high-school classes.

We sought the help of Cornell's public-affairs office to track down the best and brightest students.

Edgar Akuffo-Addo is combatting malnutrition in Ghana.

Class of 2016

Akuffo-Addo, the recipient of a Projects for Peace grant, launched ENAM to build a sustainable poultry farm in a deprived Ghanaian village. The community space aims to alleviate the threat of malnutrition by providing a local, dramatically cheaper source of animal protein in an area in which women and children suffer severely.

Akuffo-Addo has secured funding, three acres of land, and the chicks, and he is passing the construction reins over to locals and expert building contractors — all despite pushbacks thanks to an unfavorable economy in Ghana. Still, he anticipates about 250 families will benefit from the farm upon its completion this summer.

The human biology major is applying for a master's degree in healthcare administration at Cornell, and he plans to one day earn his medical degree.

Kristen Barnett summited Mt. Kilimanjaro for charity.

Class of 2015

As the president of Mountains for Moms, Barnett led a 13-person trip to the 19,341-foot-high summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro and raised more than $19,000 to combat obstetric fistula. The money funded more than 90 reconstructive surgeries for women suffering from this painful condition.

Barnett also founded the Dyson Symposium on Women in Leadership, a conference to boost support and programming for women in leadership on campus. She invited female leaders to speak and present, bringing together more than 120 participants at the two-day conference.

The president of the business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi, Barnett will join the Boston Consulting Group when she graduates; she plans to eventually work and live in Europe and to go to business school in Boston.

Marianne Collard is discovering potential medicinal properties in the plant fenugreek.

Class of 2015

Collard has been researching the health effects of fenugreek, an herbaceous plant whose seeds are often used in Indian, North African, and Middle Eastern cooking.

Fenugreek is the least-studied plant containing phytoestrogens, chemical compounds that can interact with human hormones. In studying their properties and applying them to human health, Collard sought to isolate the compound that has been recorded to interact with hormones like estrogen and even to increase the production of breast milk in lactating women. Fenugreek could either be harmful or beneficial, depending on an individual's health situation, and Collard's research sees potential toxicological purposes in the plant that could eventually be used in medication.

Collard is also a captain of the Cornell cross-country team, and she plans to get a Ph.D. in pharmacology when she graduates.

The 3 Bags Every Man Should Own

$

From carryalls to man-purses, it's not easy to figure out what kind of bag today's guys actually need.

But fear not. We have cut through the field of "murses" to find the only three bags every man should have in his wardrobe.

With the versatility of these three bags, there's very little you can't accomplish.

A briefcase for the daily slog

briefcase This is an easy one.

Most men know how important it is to have a stylish, appropriate bag for the workplace. A solid briefcase commands respect. It will give you confidence when heading into important business meetings.

Today's gentleman isn't limited to stuffy, rectangular boxes or black nylon computer bags, either. With a range of leather and canvas models like Jack Spade's gorgeous tan Fulton Leather Darrow Brief and Filson's tough-as-nails Original Brief, you can easily find the briefcase appropriate for your office and your life.

A duffel bag for weekend getaways

dufflebagsEven when you're not working, you still need a bag. A small duffel is perfect for short weekend trips and other small excursions. These bags are the perfect size to hold all your stuff while still being manageable enough to easily lug around with you.

Mix style with durability in Filson's Medium Duffel or appreciate the simplicity of Everlane's minimal design with its Weekender, which are two of our favorites.

A stylish bag for the gym

dufflebag

Last but not least, you can't forget about having a bag for all your sweaty gym clothes.

No, you can't just use the duffel bag that you use for weekend trips! Your gym bag should ideally be smaller and a little less decorative, but still appropriate to carry into the office.

Basically, you should have a bag you don't mind filling with sweaty socks, like Herschel's Sutton Duffel, which comes in a sleek, nondescript black.

A Bletchley Park Codebreaker Who Kept Silent For 30 Years Recalls The Moment Her Husband Found Out About Her Past

Bletchley BletchleyPark _IMG_0038_MansionBetween 1939 and 1945, more than 10,000 people worked in Bletchley Park, the headquarters of the UK Government Code and Cypher School, tasked with breaking Nazi codes during War World II.

According to historians, the work done at Bletchley Park — now the subject of an Oscar-nominated movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch as British mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing — shortened the war by two years and saved countless of lives.

It was here where a team of British engineers decoded Enigma, Germany's secret transmission machine, making it possible for the Allies to follow the enemy's moves.

Bletchley 0110_colossus 10 with attending WrenSoon after the war ended in 1945 the facilities were dismantled, and the work done at Bletchley was made confidential.

Most of the devices built there to decode Nazi messages were destroyed. Most of the staff members returned to their daily life and faced serious consequences if they revealed what they had done during the war.

Bletchley Park's secret lasted three decades, while the site was transformed into a training school for members of Government Communications Headquarters, the British intelligence agency that remains in operation.

Bletchley Park Deb

Only in 1974, when former MI6 officer Frederick Winterbotham published his book "The Ultra Secret," did the public learn about the site's critical role in history.

Many of the people who had worked at Bletchley were shocked. They had never been able to talk about the Park. They couldn't even tell their family.

Lady Marion Body is one of the those people. She worked on Japanese codes during the war and is among more than 40 women featured in the new book "The Debs Of Bletchley Park" by author Michael Smith.

On a visit to Bletchley last week for a press launch of the book, Body, who sat on a panel with six other women, said that after she left the Park she worked as a secretary in the House of Commons. In 1959, she married Tory MP Richard Body.

Body's husband was the first to tell her the secret was out. Here's how she recalls that moment:

I remember we could never speak about it and I had never done. One night, though, my husband had gone down to London for work and he had seen that book at Hatchards [a prominent British bookseller]. So he bought a copy and came back home with it, and that night I was sitting in the living room, and he came through the door and dropped the book on the desk in front of me and said: "Well, now will you tell me what you did during the war?"
And I just said: "No!"

Most of Bletchley Park is now a museum dedicated to educating the public about the codebreaking activities that went on there during World War II.

You can read more about Bletchley Park in Michael Smith's book "The Debs Of Bletchley Park."

The World’s Oldest Full Deck Of Playing Cards Was Almost Lost To History

oldest full deck of playing cards

In 1983, The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought a 52-card deck of South Netherlandish playing cards.

The cards dated from the 15th century and were in incredible condition — but they were almost lost to history.

An Amsterdam antiques dealer was sold the pack back in the ‘70s for $2,800. They were said to be a “unique” pack of tarot cards from the “16th century,” according to the Paris auction house that sold them.

But the dealer who bought the deck was skeptical, according to a The Day article published in 1983He thought they might be even older.

world's oldest playing cards more royaltyAfter five years of research, he was able to successfully date the cards to between 1465 and 1480 thanks to the style of the paintings, watermarks on the pasteboard, as well as the costumes and hairdos worn by the Burgundian court figures on the cards.

The shoes, hairstyles, and clothing worn by the kings and queens were going out of style by 1480. The watermarks were also common in Southern Flanders and the Netherlands from 1466 to 1479, according to The Day.

hunting playing cards world's oldestThe dates were confirmed by the Central Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam which dated the paints used to the 15th Century.

All of this digging and research paid off. In 1983, the Met bought the pack for $143,000.

hunting noose oldest playing cardsIt is now accepted that this is the oldest known full deck of playing cards in the world.

The cards themselves are also very interesting. Instead of the suits we know today, the four card categories are based on hunting gear, including hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses.

world's oldest playing cards dog collarsThis was not uncommon given that many countries had their own suit symbols. Playing cards were introduced to Europe through the Mameluke Empire in Egypt after originating in China. The Mameluke suits were goblets, gold coins, swords, and polo sticks. Italy and Spain transformed them into batons/staves, swords, cups, and coins. German card makers had acorns, leaves, hearts, and bells. The French were the ones to simplify the shapes and make them the clover, "pike-heads" (a type of weapon), hearts, and paving tiles.

The English used the simplified French shapes, but called the pike-heads "spades" and the paving tiles "diamonds."

oldest cards hunting hornsMass-producing and printing playing cards had still not become the norm, so these cards were drawn free-hand with pen and ink with gold and silver later applied. Because they are in such good condition, it’s assumed the cards were rarely touched.

You can currently view the cards at The Met's Cloisters museum in New York City.

You don't always need apps like Microsoft Paint or ArtRage to create works of art. Artist and rapper Yung Jake created a series of detailed celebrity portraits by compiling a bunch of different emojis.

He used a website called Emoji.ink to create the images, which range from well-known celebrities like Kim Kardashian to comedy writers like Larry David. Emoji.ink is sort of like Microsoft Paint, but replace the paint with hundreds of different emoji styles.

Here's a look at some of Yung Jake's work, which we originally found through his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

One of Yung Jake's most recent additions is his portrait of Jay Z. It was posted Jan. 23 and already has more than 2,000 likes on Instagram.
