Chris Hughes and Sean Eldridge on Facebook

If you're not immersed in the tech world, new gadgets, apps, and major updates can be confusing.

It's why we quickly became obsessed with a Tumblr blog called Little Big Details, which documents tiny details in tech products that help make them more accessible to the average Joe/Jane.

Below are a few of our favorite little big details in tech. Some of the following were submitted to LBD. We came up with the rest on our own.

By the way, if you have a good detail to add, let us know in the comments!

Apple's Calendar app icon changes to show you the current date. It's the only dynamic app icon on the home screen.

If a website crashes while you're using Google's Chrome browser, you get this adorable error page.

Whenever Apple makes an iPhone commercial, it sets the phone's time to 9:42. That's because 9:42 was the time Apple announced the first iPhone.

The 25 Unhealthiest States In America

$

Fat Boy

The United Health Foundation just released their annual America's Health Rankings for 2012.

See the list >

The good news: As a whole, Americans are living longer

The bad news: A growing number of unhealthy habits threatens our quality of life.

The study looks at several factors including smoking, obesity, alcohol use, education, health insurance, and public health funding.

Even the nation's healthiest state for the sixth year in a row, Vermont, is dealing with some challenges like high binge drinking among adults.

Some of the worst states featured here deal with an adult population in which 30 percent are obese, about 30 percent smoke, about 20 percent binge drink, and over 35 percent are living a sedentary lifestyle.

#24 Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania teeters on the edge of being a relatively healthy state that has moved down two spots from last year, but their stats still look pretty bad.

  • 22.4 percent of adults smoke
  • 18.3 percent of adults binge drink
  • 28.6 percent of adults are obese
  • 26.2 percent of adults live a sedentary lifestyle
  • 80.5 of incoming ninth graders will graduate high school
  • 10.9 percent of the population does not have health insurance

Source: United Health Foundation

#23 South Dakota

This was a particularly bad year for South Dakota. The state moved up 8 spots since last year toward most unhealthiest state.

  • 23 percent of adults smoke
  • 22.1 percent of adults binge drink
  • 28.1 percent of adults are obese
  • 27 percent of adults live a sedentary lifestyle
  • 81.7 of incoming ninth graders will graduate high school
  • 13 percent of the population does not have health insurance

Source: United Health Foundation

#22 Alaska

Alaska is usually thought of as being full of active people who ice-fish and scale glaciers, but that's not so true anymore:

  • 22.9 percent of adults smoke
  • 20.8 percent of adults binge drink
  • 27.4 percent of adults are obese
  • 22 percent of adults live a sedentary lifestyle
  • 72.6 of incoming ninth graders will graduate high school
  • 18.2 percent of the population do not have health insurance

See Tokyo's Gigantic Fish Market Before It Closes Next Year

Japan fish market

Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market is the largest in the world, with $15.5 million worth of fish sold there on a daily basis.

But the iconic market is about to get even bigger. Tokyo recently announced plans for a new fish market 40 percent larger than Tsukiji, to replace the 78-year-old landmark that's become cramped and run-down in recent years.

The city will shutter Tsukiji by the end of 2013, and the fish market will reopen in a new building 1.4 miles away by the beginning of 2014.

Business Insider's Jay Yarow got to visit the market on a trip to Japan last year. It was buzzing with activity when he arrived at 4:30 AM. Tourists aren't normally allowed into the market before 9 AM, because they get in the way of the men who are actually selling fish. But he snuck in and snapped photos until he was kicked out.

A fish seller stands alone waiting for the rush to start

Around the edges of the fish market are small diners selling breakfast

ATTENTION, TIM COOK: Here's Apple's Startup Shopping List (AAPL)

$
0
0

tim cook

Even after dropping billions of dollars on shareholders and investing heavily in its supply chain, Apple has more than $120 billion in the bank.

So it can easily afford a little startup shopping spree.

We've noticed a trend in apps we've reviewed recently: More often than not, they fix basic flaws in the iPhone's software, or fill in the gaps in Apple's deficient Web services.

When Tim Cookreorganized Apple's top management in October, he talked about the need to have the company's hardware, software, and services work seamlessly together.

Easier said than done: Apple has long been a hotbed of hardware-design talent. In software, it's a mixed bag, nailing some aspects of the user experience and botching others. And in services? We'll just say "Siri" and "Apple Maps" and leave it at that.

It's not enough for Cook to reshuffle Apple's leadership. He needs to build up the company's talent base. Great developers like to work with other great developers, and Apple, for all its strengths, hasn't had the critical mass of talent in Web-based services and software that it needs.

Cook doesn't have to look far, though: Apple's own App Store is a daily talent show for developers. He only needs to click "Buy" and persuade them to join the mother ship.

Because he doesn't really need their products, as much as their keen eyes for the flaws in Apple's offerings and their knack for coming up with the right fix.

The guys from Flexibits improved on Apple's built-in calendar.

Apple's built-in Calendar just isn't that great. It isn't intuitive, and its design is plain, verging on dull.

We like Fantastical because it fills in all the areas where the iPhone app falls short.

On top of fixing the iPhone's Calendar, the guys at Flexibits have completely reimagined what the desktop calendar experience should be like on a Mac—and that's where Apple really needs the help. Fantastical for the Mac is loads better than the built-in calendar. (For example, it's easily accessible through your menu bar.)

Acquiring Flexibits is a no-brainer. The technology is already there and the team can get right to work on making Apple's built-in calendar software on all platforms much, much better.

Checkmark is 20 times better than Apple's Reminders

Apple's Reminders fall short in several areas.

Checkmark smartly puts date- and time-based reminders together with lists and location-based reminders. It's well designed and takes excellent advantage of the iPhone's geolocation capabilities.

The guys at Snowman, the makers of Checkmark, are already hard at work on a desktop-based version of their app.

Besides having a great app, cofounder Ryan Cash and the rest of his team are perfectionists. They'd fit right into the Apple culture.

Instead of making its own terrible podcast app, Apple should have just bought Downcast.

Apple's Podcast app is an epic disaster. Downcast is light-years ahead of Apple's app. Why didn't Apple just hire the team behind Downcast? That seems easier.

While Apple's Podcast app is cluttered and dumb, Downcast functions much better and is beautifully designed. It just works—as Apple likes to say.

Downcast features AirPlay support, gestures, the ability to speed up playback and stream episodes without downloading, gesture support, and viewing embedded images in podcast episodes.

TO CATCH A THIEF: Jeff Gundlach's Epic First Presentation On The Economy Since He Was Burglarized

Gundlach Presentation

Bond god Jeff Gundlach just hosted a call to update clients of DoubleLine Funds.  And his presentation was appropriately titled "To Catch A Thief."

In September, Gundlach's home was burglarized and millions of dollars worth of art was stolen.  Days later, all of his property was recovered.  And we recently learned that Gundlach played a crucial role in catching the thieves.

"I have experience catching thieves," he said on the webcast today. "It's actually not hard to do."

Click Here To Begin The Presentation >

Drawing parallels to the 1955 Hitchcock movie, Gundlach noted that since the creation of the euro, German and Italian industrial production diverged dramatically after rising hand in hand for years.

He continues to worry about the U.S. debt load, but he doesn't think interest rates will surge anytime soon.

He also argued that student debt is a major and growing problem in America.

And as for trades, he thinks now's the time to short the yen and long the Japanese stock market as Japan proceeds to debase the dollar.

All of these themes and ideas come through in the charts in Gundlach's presentation.

BlackBerry 10 L Series Leak

Vietnamese site Tinh Te got its hands on what appears to be RIM's next-generation BlackBerry phone.

Engadget first spotted the leak.

The phone, which is likely the L-Series model that has leaked a few times before, also seems to match the teaser photo of the back of the device that RIM posted earlier this week.

Tinh Te has a solid record with leaks ahead of major smartphone launches, so we're inclined to believe the phone pictured here is the real deal.

Of course, nothing is official until RIM announces it. The company will hold a global launch event on Jan. 30, 2013 to formally unveil the new device.

We posted a few of Tinh Te's photos for you to check out in the gallery below.

And don't miss: RIM's new BlackBerry looks great, but the odds are against it >

Here it is. That's some attractive hardware.

There's a front-facing camera at the top for video chats.

Peek Inside The Abandoned Bank Of Manhattan That's Being Taken Over By Artists

Bank vault in the former Bank of Manhattan in the Clock Tower, Long Island City

This post originally appeared at Untapped Cities.

Urban explorers, architecture buffs and art lovers alike will relish this opportunity to fully explore the former Bank of Manhattan in Long Island City’s Clock Tower when the latest No Longer Empty exhibition, “How Much Do I Owe You?” opens to the public on Wednesday, December 12th.

Take a look >

As the event’s media sponsor, Untapped New York was given the chance to do some exploring so we can share with our readers this space, which has been closed to the public since the mid-1980s.

We will also be offering an exclusive tour led by No Longer Empty and Untapped New York to a select number of lucky readers in January, please sign up here.

Today we want to show you all the spots to check out when in the Bank of Manhattan you come to the exhibit, but do also check out this preview of the unique installations from the 26 participating artists.

The Bank of Manhattan later became the ubiquitous Chase Manhattan Bank, but the financial firm actually began as the first organized water delivery service, a private enterprise run by Aaron Burr called the Manhattan Company, which had exclusive rights to supply water to New York City. According to Kate Ascher in her excellent The Works: Anatomy of the City,

Rather than bring water from the outside as planned, the company sank more wells locally and stored it in a reservoir at Chambers Street; thus the quality of the water was no better than that drawn directly from Collect Pond itself. The company prospered nonetheless and used its surplus to start a bank–the Bank of Manhattan Company–that was more profitable than its water delivery business. As its banking operations expanded, its water delivery operations shrank, and in 1808 the company sold its water operations to the city.

The Bank of Manhattan building was built in 1924, the first skyscraper in Long Island City. The Long Island Star Journal proclaimed that it would make Bridge Plaza, then a gardened promenade in the City Beautiful style, “the new Times Square of Queens.”

Andover Realty currently owns the building and approached No Longer Empty to raise awareness of the historic space on the ground floor (the upper floors of the Clock Tower are occupied by law offices).

Lucy Lydon, communications manager for No Longer Empty, tells us that the interior reflects the history of finance.

As the Bank of Manhattan evolved from venerated institution to a more personal banking approach, so the architecture shifted from an imposing neoclassical interior to dry wall, with more opportunity for communication with customers.

Check out more awesome New York City coverage at Untapped Cities.

For example, from the main lobby area you can see the original molding and pilasters above the wall.

Above the drywall, you can see the original lobby details such as the Corinthian pilasters and molding.

The highlight of your visit will likely be the vaults in the basement.

Hobbit Pub New Zealand

For anyone who has ever wanted to have a pint with Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, you're in luck — New Zealand has a new addition to its Hobbiton tourist town, and its none other than The Green Dragon, the famed Hobbit watering hole.

Tourists and residents alike can now enjoy non-Hobbit-sized drinks at the brand new pub, located near Matamata in the North Island of New Zealand.

It is a part of the film set used for the new Hobbit movie and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and has been rebuilt with a functioning fireplace, plumping, and water pipes after being burned down for The Return of the King.

Hobbiton manager Russell Alexander told The Daily Mail that he estimates the release of the new Hobbit trilogy could bring in 100,000 visitors over the next year alone. And Hobbiton Board director George Hickton hints that The Green Dragon may even convert into an inn for overnight stays in the future.

Welcome to the sleepy town (slash film set) of Hobbiton.

It's located on an actual sheep and cow farm in New Zealand, so you can even cuddle and bottle feed the pet lambs.

Former hedge fund manager Bruce Barnes has sold his three-bedroom apartment at The Dakota, a storied apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side where he is also the president of the co-op board, Curbed reports.

The apartment was listed for $29.6 million in April, and had recently undergone a renovation to restore its 19th century details, according to the listing with Brown Harris Stevens.

Barnes said last year that hoped to downsize and spend more time outside the city. He said he would finish the remainder of his term at the helm of the co-op board.

While the buyer remains anonymous, he or she is one lucky owner: the apartment is one of the largest in the building, with expansive views of Central Park.

The Dakota, on the Upper West Side, is perhaps best known as the location of John Lennon's murder.

Barnes' apartment, on the twelfth floor, has panoramic views of Central Park.

Marissa Mayer's New Flickr Is Beautiful And Deep With Functionality Far Surpassing Instagram (YHOO)

Marissa Mayer, filtered photo

Back before the smartphone era, I was a Flickr power user.

But then I got an iPhone, and the purpose of my photography changed.

Instead of trying to impress strangers on Flickr, I started taking photos to share with friends and family via Facebook, then Twitter, and later Instagram.

One big reason for this was that Flickr didn't have an iPhone app at first. Later, when it did, it was for consuming Flickr photos, not taking them.

Meanwhile, Instagram became my go-to app because it took my ugly smartphone photos and made them look halfway decent with cheesy effects like tilt-focus and filters.

But yesterday, under new, mobile-focused CEO Marissa Mayer, Yahoo released a new Flickr app.

It's a huge upgrade.

But is it enough to win you and me back?

There are a bunch of Flickr apps in the app store. The one you want is just called "flickr"

After you install the app, tap on it to begin. It's the one with the two dots in the icon.

Tap "sign in" if you already have a Flickr or Yahoo account. Use Facebook if you don't. It's easier.

10 Restaurant Chains That Are Disappearing In America

$
0
0

In the past 10 years, some of America’s biggest food chains have lost more than 50% of their sales as they closed hundreds of locations nationwide.

These restaurants, which include former American staples such as Big Boy, Ponderosa and Bennigan’s have not been able to maintain a steady crowd. They have failed to update their brand or menu options. As a result locations have been closed in favor of a new generation of eateries.

See the struggling restaurant chains >

Based on data provided by food industry consulting and research firm Technomic Inc., 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 large restaurant chains with the biggest decline in locations and sales between 2001 and 2011.

Restaurant brands are facing new challenges, Darren Tristano, Executive Vice President of Technomic, told 24/7 Wall St. in an interview. “What’s happening today is that the contemporization of restaurants is creating a new breed, a new generation of restaurant in a competitive environment.” The struggling brands, which “tend to be older in nature,” Tristano said “have not kept up with current generations, or have been dominated by new competition within the segment.”

The type of cuisine these restaurants offer has also played a major role in their decline. In the case of barbecue establishments such as Damon’s and Tony Roma’s, competition isn’t the problem. Rather, the barbecue segment as a whole is performing poorly because its a necessarily limited cuisine. Tristano explained that this is in large part due to the fact that barbecue typically tends to attract male customers more than women. It also isn’t a meal diners tend to eat every day. Tony Roma’s sales declined by more than 70% between 2001 and 2011, while Damon’s sales fell by more than 75%.

Other chains are in segments that are doing fine, but the restaurant is losing out to newer chains with exciting brands and new offerings. TCBY, the frozen yogurt chain that experienced meteoric growth starting in the 1980s, has been cooling off for years. Traditional ice cream chains such as Coldstone Creamery have eaten into its sales, as have new frozen yogurt establishments such as Pinkberry. In 2001, there were 1,777 TCBY locations across the country. By 2011, there were just 405.

Many of the restaurants on our list saw their heyday come and go several decades ago. Of the 10 chains with the biggest declines, eight have filed for bankruptcy in the past decade. In some cases, hundreds of locations were closed overnight. The chains were either then purchased or resumed operations only once the company emerged from bankruptcy. The remaining franchises continued to operate. But reinvigorating these brands will be an uphill battle.

The recent economic recession has further made the recovery of these brands challenging. While it is clear that actively pressing into new markets is necessary to keep these restaurants growing, these chains have been forced to devote most of their resources just to remaining afloat. Tristano explained, “The economy’s been a big negative for these restaurants trying to gain traction or even grow, and so in many cases they’ve actually just continued to struggle and close units that were underperforming.”

Based on sales data provided By Technomic, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 restaurant chains that had 60% or greater declines in the number of actual store locations operating from 2001 to 2011. In order to identify the chains that were once the biggest, restaurants had to have sales of at least $225 million in 2001 and experience 50% or greater declines in sales over the same period.

10. Blimpie Subs & Salads

Pct. of stores closed: 60.1%
Total stores: 739

Blimpie first opened in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1964 as the nation’s first sub-sandwich chain. Although it remains the nation’s third largest such chain, Blimpie has struggled over the last decade. In 2011, Blimpie had just 739 stores and $115 million in sales, down from 1,853 stores and nearly $300 million in sales in 2001. Blimpie was purchased by Kahala, a franchising company that also bought Cold Stone Creamery in 2007.

Ponderosa and Bonanza are steakhouses that offer “the spirit of the Old West … and honest-to-goodness value.” Like many casual dining franchises, the recession hurt steakhouses’ bottom line. In 2008, the parent company, Metromedia Steakhouses Co., filed for bankruptcy. Although the company, now called Homestyle Dining LLC, exited bankruptcy in October 2009, its steakhouses have largely disappeared. Between 2001 and 2011 the number of Ponderosa and Bonanza restaurants fell by nearly two-thirds.

By 2011, there were just 140 restaurants in the U.S. In that time, annual sales at the chain have fallen by almost $400 million, from $580 million in 2001.
