moldstad house

A home designed by Hal Moldstad, the late noted architect who designed homes for Bill Gates and Paul Allen, is on sale for $2.75 million, Curbed reports.

The 4,764-square-foot home is located on Bainbridge Island in Washington State.

Although we don't know who owns this home, the vaulted ceilings and woodsy design gives you a good idea of what it might look like inside a Microsoft co-founder's vacation home.

The home is located on Bainbridge Island, across Puget Sound from Seattle.

A wood plank walkway leads through a lush garden to the entry.

The updated interior includes a large stone fireplace in the living room.

The Manhattan apartment with a shower in the kitchen isn't as crazy as you think

New Yorkers have long ago made peace with quirky apartment features.

But for people not as familiar with New York City real estate, this shower in the kitchen might look pretty bizarre.

shower in the kitchenA recent Padmapper listing, spotted by Gothamist, shows a one bedroom apartment on the Lower East Side with a shower in the kitchen. It’s renting for $1,795 a month, though the listing agent Lorence Dippolito writes that the price is negotiable.

People on Twitter are understandably confused by the set up.

Though not ideal by modern standards, these apartments with showers or even tubs in the kitchen are not as uncommon as one might expect.

When New York tenement buildings were first built in the 1800s, they did not have running water. After the Tenement House Act of 1901 passed, which required all residences to have running water, apartments were renovated with pipes for kitchen sinks.

Almost 30 years later when the Multiple Dwelling Law of 1929 was enacted, it said that “Every wash basin, bath, shower, sink and laundry tub shall be provided with an adequate supply of hot and cold water.” Again landlords were required to update their buildings, but as The New York Times writer Alice Feiring pointed out in a 2004 article, cheap landlords looking to save money realized they would only have to install one set of water pipes instead of two if they kept the sinks and tubs in the same room.

Finally by 1969, Local Law 77 passed which allowed bathtubs to be built in an enclosed space provided that ventilation was adequate. Landlords and buildings renovated apartments to meet this new “modern” standard (plus have a reason to jack up rent costs) with many buildings getting rid of kitchen bathtubs and showers altogether.

Of course, a few of these oddities remain as a reminder of what living in the city was once like. And though not everyone enjoys it, some New Yorkers find the experience quite intimate and cozy. As NYTimes writer Feiring wrote:

For wine tastings or dinner parties, it's indispensable. My dining table is an arm's reach away, and the tub provides ample space for overflow of dishes or for next course storage; no conventional breakfront could be as functional or multifunctional. At the risk of sounding clichéd, there's no better ice bucket for a methuselah of Champagne.

Only in New York.

But airports are changing all that. They're teaming up with top chefs and serving fresh, local cuisine in restaurants that are actually worthy of a visit.

We found 20 amazing dishes that are served at airports all around the world.

From high-end sushi in Tokyo's Narita International Airport to fried cheese curds in Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport, you won't believe these dishes came from an airport.

BOSTON LOGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, US: Legal Sea Foods serves up classic New England dishes like clam chowder and steamers. The Terminal C location has a great breakfast menu, but if you are stopping by later in the day, be sure to try the seafood trio sandwich or a signature crab cake.

NARITA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, TOKYO, JAPAN: Sushi Kyotatsu, located in Terminal 1, has many fans. Some veteran travelers actually plan their trips to make sure they can stop by the restaurant, known for fish that's somewhat pricey but super fresh.

9 ways Android Wear is better than the Apple Watch (AAPL, GOOG)

Android Wear

With new market research showing that Apple managed to sell more watches in a single day than Android Wear did in a year, it's easy to dismiss Google's smartwatch software as a bust.

But there are still some big reasons why an Android Wear watch is a better pick.

Android wear has much more variety.

Right off the bat, you have many more Android Wear options because a bunch of different companies have taken their own shot at an Android-powered smartwatch, including Motorola, LG, Huawei, Samsung, and Sony. There are 8 different designs so far.

...Including circular designs if you don't dig the Apple Watch's square screen. You can get a more traditional-looking round watch with the Moto 360 or the LG G Watch R.

You also have much more freedom about what band you get. For now, if you want an Apple Watch you have to buy one of the company's bands. Most Android Wear watches use industry standard 22 mm bands so you can choose almost anything.

10 things a startup founder learned about money while backpacking around the world

jason vitug bagan myanmar

In 2012, Jason Vitug found himself on top of a temple in Myanmar.

"I realized I was living a childhood dream," he says of that moment, near the beginning of his year-long, 21-country travel adventure. "And I started wondering why I was the only one there. "

That epiphany became the first seed of his financial education website, Phroogal, which crowdsources high-quality answers to anyone's burning financial questions in order to help them afford the lives they want to lead.

Vitug returned from his trip ready to help others have their own top-of-temple moments.

Traveling through countries including the Phillippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Brunei, Timor L'Este, and Belize, "relates a lot to how I view finances now, and what it truly means to live life rich," he says.

Here, Vitug shares the personal finance lessons he absorbed on his way — along with photos of some memorable moments from his trip.

A goal is the first step.

"Everything starts with a goal in mind," says Vitug, whether that's a trip around the world or paying off $80,000 of student loans and credit card debt, a project he had partially accomplished when he set off on his global tour.

"Your goal needs to be clear and stated. I started backpacking with a goal to see 20 countries in 12 months, and I exceeded it." Twenty-one countries later, he's also debt-free.

A plan is crucial to achieve your goals.

A goal is the first step, but it's nothing without a plan, Vitug explains. "Even with backpacking, you need to plan to get from one part of the country to the next."

A plan keeps you on track to to accomplish your goals, he says, and "a financial plan can help you achieve the lifestyle you dream."

When you don't know the answer, seek out advice.

"I learned the value of seeking advice from locals and fellow travelers," remembers Vitug. "I discovered the best places to eat, cheapest accommodations, and the most beautiful places hidden from many tourists. In general, people are willing and happy to help."

The same applies to money: "Ask experts, or even people who lived through what you're currently going through, for guidance. You're not expected to know everything."

15 tiny design features that show Apple's insane attention to detail (AAPL)

Apple keyboard close upApple products have always been known for their quality design and attention to detail.

Many of these details go unnoticed by the average Apple user, or are only useful to a relative handful of people using the product.

Some features are handy while others are purely cosmetic, but Apple included them anyway.

Here are the best of these little design flourishes.

A "breathing" sleep light:

Apple has a patent dating back to 2002 for a "Breathing Status LED Indicator." The patent describes a "blinking effect of the sleep-mode indicator [that] mimics the rhythm of breathing which is psychologically appealing."

A smart fan that listens:

When engaging the voice dictation feature on newer Mac laptops, Apple automatically slows the internal fan speed to better hear your voice.

Watch the light's travel in Maps:

If you select the satellite view in Apple's Maps app and zoom far enough out, you'll be able to see the sun's light as it moves in real-time across the Earth.

The Audi S4 is $50,000 of old-school driving fun and modern luxury

Audi S4

These days, there's no shortage of high-end sedans that are both luxurious and fun to drive. But there is a shortage of luxurious sports sedans that achieve that fun by directly connecting the driver and machine – in the old-fashioned way, channeling a powerful engine through a manual transmission.

In this sense, the 2015 Audi S4 Quattro – With a 6-speed stick shift! — is something special: a throwback that still feels thoroughly modern. When Audi handed us the keys, we just had to take it for a spin.

In the S4, Audi has achieved a fantastic balance of luxury and performance.

The S4 sits above the standard A4 sedan and below the RS4 Avant, a BMW M3-fighter. Sadly, the RS4 isn't destined for the US market.

Armed with a 6-speed manual transmission, the S4 allowed for old-school gear-shifting enjoyment.

Peggy was not alone: These famous ads were all created by women of the 'Mad Men' era

peggy olson mad menWhile men certainly made up most of the advertisers on Madison Avenue in the 1960s, some of the most famous campaigns from the "Mad Men" era of advertising were actually created by female copywriters. In real life, Peggy Olson, the underappreciated copywriter on "Mad Men," would have been less lonely than her TV character.

Many of the ads were for soaps and beauty products, but some were for cars and other products that did not fall into the traditionally female beauty and domestic categories.

And one of the first ads that used sex appeal as a selling device — for Woodbury Facial Soap — was created by Helen Lansdowne Resor at JWT in 1910.

This post was originally compiled by Laura Stampler.

Shirley Polykoff of Foote, Cone & Belding created this famous Clairol campaign in 1959.

Mary Wells' eponymous agency, Wells Rich Greene, made this quintessentially sexist ad for the former National Airlines in 1971.

However, these findings may not be something to celebrate, says Payscale data scientist Katie Bardaro: "In a lot of ways it paints a more negative picture for women, because even in these jobs where women are paid more, the difference is so small."

What it’s really like to live in a New York City apartment with a shower in the kitchen

Alex Kuzoian shower in kitchen

On Monday, the listing for a $1,795 one-bedroom in Manhattan’s Lower East Side with a shower in the kitchen went viral.

And though not an ideal set up, these apartments with showers or bathtubs in the kitchen are not as uncommon as one might expect.

In fact, Business Insider associate video producer Alex Kuzoian currently lives in a similar set up with two other roommates.

“I never really had a problem with it,” he said of the apartment. “The bizarre-ness of it kind of just fades after awhile.”

Kuzoian has been living in his Hell’s Kitchen home for the past four months where he’s paying significantly less than $1,000 a month — extremely affordable for the Midtown Manhattan location where the average rent for a one bedroom is $3,374, according to Reator.com.

Even though the shower is in the common area, Kuzoian says that the lack of privacy isn’t too much of an issue since all of his roommates are on different schedules.

“The most annoying part is just not having a real bathroom,” he said. “We have one sink (the one in the kitchen) and then just a tiny room with a toilet. It would be nice not to have to brush my teeth, shave, and do the dishes in the same sink.”

It’s the act of shaving that really bothers him.

“I don't like to do it over the kitchen sink — plus theres no mirror there anyway — so I stand in front of the mirror that’s attached to my bedroom door and hold a garbage can under my chin,” he said. “That’s why I only shave like once a week.”

But Kuzoian said because the apartment is so affordable, he really doesn’t mind the set up. Plus, because he knew his roommates before he moved in, everyone is already comfortable with one another.

“We don’t have too many guests, mainly because the place is so small — there’s not a lot of room for them to stay,” he said. “It’s usually just our girlfriends or boyfriends.”

He added, “they’re already kind of used to it.”

As for any plus sides of living in an apartment where your shower is in your kitchen, Kuzoian said it’s definitely a “great conversation piece” and that someday he hoped he would be able to look back and get a great story out of his current living situation.

“Being young makes it easier,” he said. “If I were older there's no way I’d tolerate it. But for now, it's just part of the cliche 'NYC experience,’ I guess.”

How Jay Z became such a successful businessman

jay z

Jay Z recently relaunched Tidal, a $20-a-month music streaming service that some say could spell trouble for other sites like Spotify.

The launch is the latest in a string of business successes for the 45-year-old rapper, who owns a record label, talent agency, and fashion brand. His estimated net worth is $500 million.

Jay Z has found success by creating his own opportunities.

In doing so, he's gone from being a teen selling drugs on a Brooklyn street corner to a bona fide business mogul.

Before he ever was a successful rapper or businessman, Jay Z was Shawn Carter, a teen drug dealer on the streets of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. He has said drug dealing taught him how to budget, among other essential business skills. "At some point, you have to have an exit strategy, because your window is very small," he told Vanity Fair. "You’re going to get locked up or you’re going to die."

Source: Vanity Fair

Jay Z creates his business opportunities. In the late '90s, he couldn't get a record deal, so he and Damon Dash started their own label, Roc-A-Fella Records. "It was either give up or create my own company," he told Forbes. He was later signed by Def Jam Records.

Source: Forbes

He keeps an incredibly diverse portfolio. His wide business interests include a nightclub (The 40/40 Club), a liquor company (Armadale Vodka), a talent agency (Roc Nation), and a partnership with Barneys New York.

15 heartbreaking drawings by child victims of Nigeria's deadly Boko Haram

hoko baram drawing unicef

April 14 marks one year since Islamist militant group Boko Haram abducted 276 girls from a Nigerian boarding school. While some schoolgirls managed to escape, over 200 are missing, according to a new report from UNICEF.

The girls' disappearance is "only one of endless tragedies being replicated on an epic scale across Nigeria and the region," says Manual Fontaine, UNICEF director for West and Central Africa.

The crisis in the country's northeast, fueled by conflicts between Boko Haram, military forces, and civilian self-defense groups, has forced 800,000 children to flee their homes in search of safety. Many of the displaced find shelter in host communities desperate for basic supplies, clean water, and health and nutrition services.

Haunted by memories of violence and atrocities, the children struggle to forget watching their parents and siblings be slaughtered, or seeing their homes burn to the ground. "They have the right to get their childhoods back," Fontaine says.

At many of the camps, UNICEF uses drawing during psycho-social therapy sessions to help the escaped children open up about what they've seen and endured, and what they miss most. A new awareness campaign, #BringBackOurChildhood, has celebrity Snapchat users recreating the images in the app. You can check out their renditions here.

With permission, we're sharing some of the children's original drawings.

During psycho-social therapy sessions, some children illustrated the trauma they witnessed. Umar, a child refugee in Chad, remembers assailants going into his school and shooting at children in several classrooms.

Another child refugee, Bulus, fled to Cameroon after the Boko Haram burned down his house. "We lost everything, even our mango tree which was on the court," Bulus says.

Sona, a child refugee in Cameroon, remembers the Boko Haram bombing the local church while the pastor was still inside.

Here's how to expertly repair the damage this horrible winter did to your leather shoes

Leather Cleaning

After a long winter of rock salt, dirt, ice, and snow, it's finally time to give your trusty boots a rest.

But before you bury them in the back of your closet, you should be sure they're ready the next time it gets snowy again – because, sadly, the ice and slush will return.

Proper care can dramatically increase the lifespan of your footwear. Well-made shoes can last decades, if cleaned and oiled regularly. This routine maintenance will also increase their effectiveness at repelling cold and water.

Though I used an old pair of boots, most leather shoes can benefit from this sort of treatment – even many styles of women's shoes.

Let me show you how.

For this repair demonstration, I'm using my 4-year-old Chippewa Apache "GQ" boot. These boots have only been oiled once, and are in pretty rough shape. They've seen two long upstate New York winters, as well as two equally rough New York City winters. They were not babied in any way, and are prime candidate for this rejuvenation process.

There's road salt, dirt, and who-knows-what-else caked on. The leather is starting to show signs of age and is a bit dry. However, these boots still have a lot of life left in them. If taken care of properly – which is what we're doing now – I'm confident they could last another 5-10 years.

Yes, I am aware they may need to be resoled soon.

To start, we're first going to "wash" the leather with some leather soap. Leather soap, like the Saddle Soap I used here, is specially designed to clean up dried-out leather hides. Though it's a weird yellowish color, it lathers and foams just like the hand soap you use for your own non-dried out hide.

Take a tour of Scientology's massive Los Angeles real-estate empire

Scientology 2 25

The Church of Scientology has a huge footprint in Los Angeles.

The religion, which made headlines in recent weeks via HBO's "Going Clear" documentary, owned a "real-estate empire of 26 properties" worth as much as $400 million in the city as of 2011, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

While some critics say Scientology maintains a large real-estate portfolio to create the impressions that it is a larger organization than it really is, there is no question the church has an impressive physical presence in the LA area.

Business Insider visited many of Scientology's properties in the city, including the church's famous "Celebrity Centre" and a museum dedicated to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The hub of Scientology's presence in Los Angeles is the former Cedars of Lebanon hospital complex. This building, the Pacific Area Command Base (PAC Base) is topped by a massive sign with 16-foot-tall letters. It was purchased by the church in 1977. At the time, Scientology leaders said it would be their "central facility for the United States." Today, Scientology has its spiritual headquarters in Clearwater, Florida, but PAC base still houses dormitories and offices for the church.

Source, Source, Source

Uniformed Scientologists can often be seen coming in and out of the PAC base and working to maintain the building. They have shuttle buses that take them from the complex to the church's other facilities in the LA area.

There are also security guards who constantly patrol the complex. In our experience, they occasionally question and discourage people who attempt to photograph the facility.
