reading subway

There's always a significant adjustment to make when transitioning from school to the workforce, with the sudden realization that no matter how smart or talented you are, you're starting at the bottom.

To help you determine what you want from your professional life and how to make the most of it, we've rounded up some of our favorite business books.

If you want to bolster your networking, leadership, and time-management skills, it's time to get reading.

Drake Baer contributed to this post.

'So Good They Can't Ignore You' by Cal Newport

Some of the most common advice you'll hear when you're starting out is that if you pursue your passion, the money will follow.

But there's a big caveat to that, argues Newport, an author and professor. For most people, he says mastery of a certain skill can lead to finding your passion, since the mastery of this skill can open new doors and allow you to progress in your career.

He's not suggesting you give up on your dreams, but ensure that you pair them with a dose of reality and make yourself valuable in the marketplace.

'The Black Swan' by Nassim Taleb

People love the illusion of certainty provided by predictions.

In "The Black Swan," investor-philosopher Taleb diagnoses the way people misguidedly lean on prediction as a way of moving through the world, and reveals how the most structured of systems are the most vulnerable to collapse — like the financial system in 2007.

It's rare to find a book that will change the way you think about the world. This is one such book.

'Lean In' by Sheryl Sandberg

Regardless of whether you agree with Sandberg's controversial theories, "Lean In" is a must-read for anyone looking to join the conversation around women and leadership.

In the book, she combines compelling research with moving personal stories to examine how women unintentionally undermine their professional progress. Moreover, she offers guidance for women and men looking to promote women's career success.

It's a work that will make readers of any gender question their assumptions about what it really takes to succeed — and be satisfied — at work.

14 email-etiquette rules every professional should know

$
0
0

Online Class

Research has found that US employees, on average, spend about a quarter of their time at work combing through the hundreds of emails that each worker sends and receives every day.

And yet, according to career coach Barbara Pachter, plenty of professionals still don't know how to use email appropriately.

Pachter outlines modern email-etiquette rules in her book "The Essentials of Business Etiquette." We pulled out the most important ones you need to know.

Vivian Giang contributed to an earlier version of this article.

1. Include a clear, direct subject line.

Examples of a good subject line include "Meeting date changed,""Quick question about your presentation," or "Suggestions for the proposal."

"People often decide whether to open an email based on the subject line," Pachter says. "Choose one that lets readers know you are addressing their concerns or business issues."

2. Use a professional email address.

If you work for a company, you should use your company email address. But if you use a personal email account — whether you are self-employed or just like using it occasionally for work-related correspondences — you should be careful when choosing that address, Pachter says.

You should always have an email address that conveys your name so that the recipient knows exactly who is sending the email. Never use email addresses (perhaps remnants of your grade-school days) that are not appropriate for use in the workplace, such as "babygirl@..." or "beerlover@..."— no matter how much you love a cold brew.

3. Think twice before hitting "reply all."

No one wants to read emails from 20 people that have nothing to do with them. Ignoring the emails can be difficult, with many people getting notifications of new messages on their smartphones or distracting pop-up messages on their computer screens. Refrain from hitting "reply all" unless you really think everyone on the list needs to receive the email, Pachter says.

9 science-backed ways men can appear more attractive to women

$

george clooney

Psychology research indicates that women are more like men regarding sexuality and attraction than people previously thought.

We explore some of the major similarities and differences between the sexes, and how men can use them to appear more attractive.

Look for the universal signals of flirtation.

Rutgers University anthropologist and best-selling author Helen E. Fisher says that from the depth of the Amazons to the cafés of Paris, women signal interest with a remarkably similar sequence of expressions.

As she shared at Psychology Today, it goes like this:

First the woman smiles at her admirer and lifts her eyebrows in a swift, jerky motion as she opens her eyes wide to gaze at him. Then she drops her eyelids, tilts her head down and to the side, and looks away. Frequently she also covers her face with her hands, giggling nervously as she retreats behind her palms.

This sequential flirting gesture is so distinctive that [German ethologist Irenaus] Eibl-Eibesfeldt was convinced it is innate, a human female courtship ploy that evolved eons ago to signal sexual interest.

Look for someone 'in your league.'

Men — and women — are attracted to people who are as attractive as they are.

"If you go for someone roughly equally to you in attractiveness, it avoids two things,"Nottingham Trent University psychologist Dr. Mark Sergeant tells The Telegraph.

"If they are much better-looking than you, you are worried about them going off and having affairs," he says. "If they are much less attractive, you are worried that you could do better."

Present yourself as high status.

In 1969, University of North Carolina sociologist Glen Elder found that looks and wealth tend to find one another — namely, good-looking women tended to settle down with less attractive but wealthier men

Since then, it's become a well-confirmed finding in the social sciences.

Most recently, a 2010 study found that men pictured with a Silver Bentley Continental GT were way more attractive than those pictures with a Red Ford Fiesta ST, and a 2014 study found that men pictured in luxury apartment were more attractive than those in a control group.

Why the attraction to resources? Evolutionary psychologists say it's because women want a mate who can provide for them.

Science says that charisma can be learned — here are 9 proven strategies

$

beyonce smile

It's not something you're born with.

"Charisma is simply the result of learned behaviors," says Olivia Fox Cobane, author of "The Charisma Myth."

Use words that people can relate to.

In his book "Why Presidents Succeed," University of California at Davis psychologist Dean Keith Simonton argues that the most effective communicators use concrete — rather than abstract — language.

"'I feel your pain' has association,"he tells the APA Monitor, "but 'I can relate to your viewpoint' doesn't. The most charismatic presidents reached an emotional connection with people talking not to their brains but to their gut."

Express your feelings.

"Charismatic individuals express their feelings spontaneously and genuinely,"Claremont McKenna College psychologist Ronald E. Riggio says. "This allows them to affect the moods and emotions of others."

It's called emotional contagion, or "the tendency to automatically mimic and synchronize expressions."

So if you're really excited about something, other people with "catch" that excitement, too.

Talk about your potential — it's more impressive than talking about your accomplishments.

A Stanford-Harvard study recently cited on Marginal Revolution suggests that accomplishments aren't what capture people's attention — rather, it's a person's perceived potential.

"This uncertainty [that comes with potential] appears to be more cognitively engaging than reflecting on what is already known to be true,"the authors write.

Bill Gates made these 15 predictions in 1999 — it’s scary how accurate he was

$

bill gatesIn 1999, Bill Gates wrote a book titled “Business @ the Speed of Thought.”

In the book, Gates makes 15 bold predictions that at the time might have sounded outrageous.

But as business student Marcus Kirjonen pointed out on his blog, his forecasts turned out to be “eerily prescient.”

#1 Price comparison sites

Gates' prediction: "Automated price comparison services will be developed, allowing people to see prices across multiple websites, making it effortless to find the cheapest product for all industries."

What we see now: You can easily search for a product on Google or Amazon and get different prices of the same product. Sites like NextTag and PriceGrabber are built specifically for price comparisons.

#2 Mobile devices

Gates' prediction:"People will carry around small devices that allow them to constantly stay in touch and do electronic business from wherever they are. They will be able to check the news, see flights they have booked, get information from financial markets, and do just about anything else on these devices."

What we see now: Smartphones, and now smartwatches, do this for most people.

#3 Instant payments and financing online, better healthcare through the web

Gates' prediction: "People will pay their bills, take care of their finances, and communicate with their doctors over the Internet."

What we see now: Tech hasn't been able to change healthcare all that much, but there are sites like ZocDoc that makes finding a doctor and scheduling easier. You can now borrow money online through sites like Lending Club, and easily make payments through sites like PayPal and Venmo.

The 16 most successful alumni from the London School of Economics

The 24 people who will decide the future of music streaming

$

taylor swift smile

There's a war breaking out between some of the world's biggest tech companies — and it's all about music streaming.

Rapper Jay Z acquired Swedish streaming company Aspiro, and is using his star power to make that mainstream. And Spotify, another Swedish company, offers free streaming and an impressive collection of music.

But everything could be about to change for music streaming as Apple prepares to relaunch iTunes as a streaming platform after its acquisition of Beats.

23. Deezer CEO Dr. Hans-Holger Albrecht

Deezer, founded in Paris in 2006, was one of the internet's first streaming sites. Just like Spotify, Tidal and Qobuz, it was an early European success story. But things didn't go smoothly for Deezer in its early days. It was shut down over copyright infringement allegations in 2007. But the site returned with an improved royalty model which let people buy music through iTunes that they had discovered through the service.

But there were more problems for Deezer in 2008 when it faced running out of money. It quickly turned things around by creating its own ad agency to run ads on the site and raising new funding, preventing another shutdown.

Deezer CEO Axel Dauchez exited the company in 2014, and promptly became the CEO of Publicis Worldwide in France. Now, Deezer is led by Dr. Hans-Holger Albrecht, an experienced businessman who has managed several different companies.

22. Qobuz CEO Yves Riesel

Like Tidal, Qobuz is a European streaming site which caters to audiophiles rather than casual music fans. Its big selling point is high-resolution music, which only really sound better if you have high-end audio equipment.

You might think that there's not a huge market for streaming services like Qobuz and Tidal which charge a maximum fee of £19.99 per month (double the cost of Spotify), but there's actually a dedicated network of audiophiles around the world who are prepared to pay more for their music.

21. Rdio CEO Anthony Bay

Rdio is a streaming site and social network focused around music that competes with Spotify and Tidal. The service was launched in 2010 by Skype cofounders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, and has grown to operate in 61 countries around the world.

Rdio launched a free streaming service in 2014, using a similar ad-supported model to rivals like Spotify. It also experimented with its own video-on-demand network named Vdio in 2013, but shut it down after several months.

When you're on a long-haul flight to Asia, you know how important it is to get some sleep.

But what if you're a member of the flight crew? Turns out that Boeing's 777 and 787 airliners have a secret stairway that leads to a tiny set of windowless bedrooms for flight attendants and pilots. After all, they also need sleep on journeys than can take 18 hours or more.

Passengers aren't allowed up there, and few people know they even exist. Here is what those upstairs bedrooms look like, via YouTube videos from Chris McGinniss at Travelskills.com and Chris Jepson and the Flickr account of Martin Deutsch.

This is Boeing's official representation of the crew rest area on a Boeing 777.

This diagram shows how the crew bedrooms are located in a tiny slot above the main cabin.

It looks pretty nice in there, judging by Boeing's official imagery.

Stanford University Students Fans Football

When it comes to college, being smart and being athletic don't have to be mutually exclusive.

We worked with college database Niche to come up with a list of schools where students are both athletic and smart.

To create this list, Niche culled data from students at colleges around the US who rated their schools in a number of categories, including academics and athletics.

Many of the schools on the list are big, sports-driven schools — Penn State and UConn, for example — but other, smaller ones known more for their academic prestige — like Princeton and Williams College — also rank highly not just for participating in varsity sports, but also joining intramurals, going to the gym, and, of course, having team spirit.

We've included some quotes from students on Niche to show why each school made the list.

50. Kenyon College

Gambier, Ohio

"I am on the swim team, which is the most developed and competitive team on campus. It's a great experience and we have a lot of alumni support. The professors respect what we do for the most part and help us to balance the workload."

Visit Niche for more information on Kenyon College.

49. Indiana University at Bloomington

Bloomington, Indiana

"Athletics are huge at IU and are a big part of the experience at Indiana University."

"Everyone here is really good looking, but pretty smart too."

Visit Niche for more information on Indiana University at Bloomington.

48. University of Richmond

Richmond, Virginia

"A lot of students are involved in at least club or intramural sports. Some teams including Quidditch and Squash do extremely well each year. Others are more laid back and just for fun."

Georgia Tbilisi highways building communist

Mid-20th-century architecture is not remembered fondly anywhere in the world.

And that's especially true in former communist countries of Europe and Central Asia, where it seems like architects following a passing fad were allowed to do whatever they wanted.

The result was some bizarre and amazing-looking structures, at least a dozen of which are still standing 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The "Monument to the Revolution" built in Croatia (then Yugoslavia) is an abstract sculpture dedicated to the people of Moslavina during World War II.

This building in Georgia originally housed the Ministry of Highways and almost looks like it has been Photoshopped. It's now occupied by the country's central bank.

The enormous UFO-like spiritual home of the Bulgarian communist party stands on a peak in Buzludzha, a mountainous part of the country.
