I went to summer camp for adults and it was like a frat party on steroids

club getaway rock climbing

What do you get when you combine campfires, s'mores, and sing-alongs with "flip cup" tournaments and a bunch of singles dancing to house music?

The answer is Connecticut's Club Getaway, a summer camp for adults, one of many in the US. Those looking to relive their childhood memories (or experience this rite of passage for the first time) can pay more than $500 for a weekend of summertime traditions and friendship-making.

Last summer, I joined the 1 million adults who attend summer camp for grown-ups each year. It's an experience I won't soon forget.

I never went to sleepaway camp as a child. Every June, my lucky classmates left for northern New England and returned two months later with macramé bracelets, tanned skin, and endless stories about “camp friends.” I felt as if I were missing out on this whole other world.

Last summer, I had the opportunity to attend summer camp for adults, which was a lot like how I imagine kids' summer camp is — except with booze, sex, and gossip.

I spent the weekend at Club Getaway, an all-inclusive sports and adventure resort nestled in the Berkshire Mountains of Kent, Connecticut. While the camp hosts corporate retreats, school groups, and children’s camps during the workweek, weekends are reserved for adult programming. Over 10,000 grown-ups come every year.

war is hell vietnam war

In 1954, America entered into a messy war to support South Vietnam against the communist regime in North Vietnam and its allies in southern Vietnam, known as the Viet Cong.

The two-decade long war claimed the lives of more than 3 million people, with the majority of the casualties being Vietnamese civilians.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, here are some of the most gripping and recognizable photos from the conflict.

Editors note: Some of the following images are graphic in nature and may be disturbing to viewers.

In what might be the most enduring image from the war, a South Vietnamese general executes a suspected Viet Cong fighter in Saigon. The image won a Pulitzer Prize, but the photographer, Eddie Adams, dealt with an enduring sense of guilt over the photo.

In another of the war's most iconic photos, a 9-year-old girl is seen running naked from a napalm attack. This photo, by photographer Nick Ut, also won a Pulitzer Prize.

The 20 richest people in ad tech, ranked by income

criteo ceo Jean-Baptiste Rudelle

Ad tech stocks may have taken a dive in the first quarter, but the industry is still big business. Spending on digital ads in the US alone is expected to reach $52.8 billion this year, according to Strategy Analytics.

And as money keeps flowing through the pipes, ad tech execs are being rewarded handsomely.

Click here to skip straight through to the 20 highest-paid ad-tech execs >>

Methodology: Our ranking looked at SEC filings, taking account of total annual 2014 compensation, including salary, stock awards, option awards, and other incentives. That's an obvious flaw because a lot of people on this list hold a lot of their net worth in stock they have accumulated over previous years and through other assets and investments.

This list is by no means extensive: We chose to look at public companies only, so many big names like AppNexus, InMobi, and RadiumOne are not in there. We also only looked at pure-play ad tech companies: Otherwise ad tech execs at Google, Oracle, and Facebook would surely make the list too.

20. Gretchen Joyce, COO at MaxPoint Interactive

Compensation: $1,175,875

Notes: Joyce is the only woman on our list.

19. William Day, president and CEO at Tremor Video

Compensation: $1,205,014

Notes: Tremor Video, the video ad tech company, IPOd in June 2013.

18. Jason Kelly, president of managed media at Millennial Media

Compensation: $1,229,817

Notes: Kelly joined Millennial Media — which specializes in mobile advertising — in October last year. He was previously CEO of Sociomantic, the retargeting and programmatic company acquired by UK-based Tesco subsidiary Dunnhumby.

Anonymous Instagram chef Jacques La Merde, French for "Jack S---,"is a real-life restaurant chef whose account parodies this sort of haute cuisine. His photos show unusual ingredients prepared in absurd and innovative ways, such as the deli-honey-ham rosettes, minced Dunk-a-Roos, and Shamrock Shake "fluid gel."

The 10 best jobs for introverts

artist

About half the population is made up of introverts — those who get their energy from within. Yet, according to PayScale, our world is largely "designed for extroverts"— those who are energized by being around other people.

"Crucial aspects of career advancement, from networking to public speaking, can feel like insurmountable hurdles for those of us who gather energy from time spent alone,"PayScale says. "However, introverts excel in jobs that reward their unique abilities."

PayScale sifted through its database to find jobs that don't require a great deal of interaction with others.

10. Social media manager

Median annual pay: $45,000

PayScale says:"Introverts don't dislike people, they just get exhausted by constantly being around them. But since social media managers specialize in virtual interaction, their work is perfect for introverts. Social media managers interact with thousands of Twitter followers and Facebook fans without having too many people invade their bubble."

9. Small-engine mechanic

Median annual pay: $30,100

PayScale says:"It's hard to socialize when you have your head buried in an engine, so working as a small-engine mechanic deserves a spot on our list of best careers for introverts. This job requires very little interaction with others, but only pays about $30,000 a year, resulting in it coming in number nine on our list."

8. Forester

Median annual pay: $48,000

PayScale says:"Foresters spend their time communing with nature instead of communicating with crowds, making it the perfect job for an outdoorsy introvert. This job, which is overwhelmingly held by men (92% of foresters are male), involves plenty of time alone while maintaining and studying parks, forests, lakes, and other nature-rich areas."

14 tactics for reading people's body language

$

confident woman sexy relaxed fun

Whether someone's lying to you, hitting on you, or bossing you around, you can read their intent and emotional state in their body language — if you know what to pay attention to.

According to UCLA professor Albert Mehrabian, 55% of what you convey comes from body language, 38% from the tone of your voice, and only 7% from the words you say.

So how do read between the lines? We've compiled tips from Psychology Today, research journals, and other publications to help you understand what people are telling you, far beyond their words.

Look for a lack of crinkles around the eyes to detect a fake smile.

Making a genuine smile — also known as a Duchenne smile — is nearly impossible to do on command. It's why family photos tend to look so awkward.

The smile, it turns out, is all about the crow's-feet around your eyes. When you're smiling joyfully, they crinkle. When you're faking it, they don't

If someone's trying to look happy but really isn't, you won't see the wrinkles.

Raised eyebrows are often a sign of discomfort.

In the same way that real smiles shape the wrinkles around your eyes, University of Massachusetts professor Susan Krauss Whitbourne says worry, surprise, or fear can cause people to raise their eyebrows in discomfort.

So if someone compliments your new hairstyle or outfit with their eyebrows raised, it may not be sincere.

If their voice goes up or down, they're likely interested.

Whether you know it or not, your vocal range shows your interest.

"Once a conversation begins, besotted women slip into sing-songy voices,"Psychology Today reports, "while men drop theirs an octave."

The biker women of Instagram are similar to the medium's communities of knitters, vinyl collectors and people who live in '60s-inspired chrome Airstream trailers — retro Americana aficionados who love to share their kitschy-cool analog lifestyles on a digital platform.

May Day parade

The Cold War is long over and, unless you're a labor organizer or a communist, May 1st is probably just another day on the calendar.

But for decades, "International Workers Day" was an opportunity for the Soviet-aligned bloc to show off its military hardware.

In leftist and Soviet-allied regimes around the world, dictators would send their militaries into major public areas in ostentatious shows of authority and force. There was some irony in these over-the-top celebrations: In the course of heralding the ideological underpinnings of Soviet-allied regimes, those governments only demonstrated how rapidly communist regimes had morphed into brutal military dictatorships.

Here are some of the best pictures we found of May 1st military parades from the Cold War period.

The Soviets would roll out their big guns for May Day. Here, 2 intercontinental ballistic missiles made their way across Red Square in 1968.

Tanks and rocket launchers would stream through the center of the Soviet capital ...

... along with nuclear-capable missiles, like these, which also appeared at the 1968 parade.

This psychologist's impressive presentation shows how materialism is eroding our happiness

alhambra

The answer to, "Can money buy happiness?" isn't simply "yes" or "no."

It's, "depends how you spend it."

Miriam Tatzel, PhD, of Empire State College, recently presented an overview of consumer behavior and happiness at The American Psychological Association's annual conference.

In it, she examined the link between consumerism, happiness, and even the environmental impact of our buying decisions.

She found that the same things that benefit our mindset may improve our surroundings, as well.

Dr. Tatzel allowed us to republish her slides here.

Dr. Tatzel found that many of things that increase our happiness are also good for the environment.

While we regard an increase in consumer spending as a good thing for the economy, it's not such great news for the environment, or for our individual levels of satisfaction.

All of that spending isn't making us happy. Why not? The field of Positive Psychology has been investigating this very question.

The 10 best airports in Asia

Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Leading consumer aviation website Skytrax has published its latest annual World Airport Awards, and for the third consecutive year, Singapore's Changi International Airport took the crown as the world's best airport. However, Changi isn't the only world class facility of its kind in Asia — which is why Skytrax has released its list of the 10 best airports in Asia.

The Skytrax annual rankings are based on the impressions of over 13 million flyers from 112 countries. More than 550 airports were included in the survey, which covers 39 service and performance parameters, including facility comfort, location of bathrooms, and the language skills of the airport staff.

10. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)

Yearly passengers: 47.5 million

Previous rank: N/A

Why it's awesome: Kuala Lumpur International is one of southeast Asia's busiest airports and serves as home base to both AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines.

The airport is located just 35 miles south of the Malaysian capital and is easily accessible by road and rail. KL International is home to one of the most unique features in all of aviation, an in-airport jungle, complete with waterfall. Called the KLIA Jungle Boardwalk, the nature area is located in the airport's Satellite Terminal.

Source: Skytrax World Airport Awards. Yearly passenger figure is for 2013, provided by Airports Council International.

9. Taiwan Taoyuan international Airport (TPE)

Yearly passengers: 34 million

Previous rank: 10

Why it's awesome: Located just outside of the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, Taoyuan International is the largest airport in Taiwan. The airport is the home base for both China Airlines and EVA Air.

Skytrax reviewers praised the airport for its polite service, clean environment, and speedy immigration lines. Taoyuan was also once home to Taiwan's aviation museum, but it was shut down earlier this year to make way for further airport expansion.

Source: Skytrax World Airport Awards. Yearly passenger figure is for 2014, provided by Taoyuan International Airport.

8. Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT)

Yearly passengers: 35.6 million

Previous rank: 9

Why it's awesome: Narita is the first of the two Tokyo airports to appear on the list. Located 35 miles outside of Japanese capital, Narita handles the majority of the international traffic going in and out of the city. The airport serves as a major hub for ANA, Japan Airlines, Delta, and United.

Skytrax reviewers lauded the airport for its efficient and friendly staff, clean facilities, and abundant dining options.
