NFL POWER RANKINGS: Where Every Team Stands With One Game Left

$

richard sherman seattle seahawks 2012

Week 16 was full of mismatches. Good teams played bad teams across the board, and many of them won to lock up playoff spots.

There are now only two playoff positions up for grabs, both in the NFC, with the Redskins, Cowboys, Giants, Vikings, and Bears all in contention.

Going into Week 17, hot teams like the Seahawks and Packers shot up our rankings, while the 49ers and Texans slipped after blowout losses.

Click here to see the rankings >

Once again, here's how we came up with them.

We took our rankings from last week and moved teams up and down based on the following criteria:

  • A win: up 2 spots
  • A loss: down 1 spot
  • A loss by 10+ points: down 2 spots
  • A win against a top-5 team from the week before: up 2 spots
  • A win against a top-12 team from the week before (aka, a playoff team): up 1 spot
  • Covering the point spread: up 1 spot

1. Denver Broncos (#1 last week): Beat the Browns

Record: 12-3

Biggest thing we learned this week: They've beaten a grand total of two playoff teams all year. But they're absolutely dominating teams they should beat.

2. Atlanta Falcons (#4 last week): Beat the Lions

Record: 13-2

Biggest thing we learned this week: After a mini-slump in the middle of the year, the Falcons are probably playing the best ball of their season going into the playoffs.

3. Seattle Seahawks (#7 last week): Beat the 49ers

Record: 10-5

Biggest thing we learned this week: They're almost unstoppable at home. Unfortunately they're going to have to win on the road in the playoffs.

Authorities in New Delhi shut down large parts of the Indian capital two days in a row as protests continued after the gang rape of a 23-year-old

Police have shut down public transportation and are preventing large crowds from gathering together and have said that they have no immediate plans to lift the ban, according to the New York Times.

Many have said this is just an attempt on the part of the ruling Congress Party to clamp down on criticism they have received.

Massive protests have swept India's capital and the country following the gang rape of a 23-year old.

Huge parts of the capital have been shut down and public transport halted to clamp down on protests. Here Indian police in riot gear stand guard outside a politician's home.

The Best Investments Of 2012

$

scoreboard

There were undoubtedly a few major stories that dominated financial markets in 2012.

The formation of a recovery in U.S. housing is definitely one of them. Another is ECB President Mario Draghi's proclamations to "do whatever it takes the save the euro," which has calmed markets plagued in recent years by the eurozone sovereign debt crisis.

While housing and Draghi were major factors for investors in 2012, they weren't the only developments that drove returns in financial markets this year.

Best government bonds: Portugal

YTD return: 51.6 percent (as of December 6)

Story: The story of the year in financial markets has arguably been the "Draghi effect." When ECB President Mario Draghi declared in July that the ECB would "do whatever it takes to save the euro" and subsequently followed through with the introduction of the central bank's OMT bond market intervention program a month later, yields on sovereign debt dropped precipitously.

Business Insider called the drop in Italian bond yields the "Most Important Chart of 2012," given that economy's significance in the euro crisis. However, Portuguese debt, though out of the spotlight, ultimately performed much better than Italian or Spanish bonds in 2012.

Source: BofA Merrill Lynch, Business Insider

Best currency: Hungarian forint (against the U.S. dollar)

YTD return: 11.1 percent

Story: The forint had a rough year in 2011 after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban nationalized pension funds and forced the country's banks to take writedowns on loans, triggering a credit rating downgrade.

However, the forint made a big comeback in 2012 as major world central banks launched new monetary easing programs and investors extended further into riskier assets in search of yield, which Hungarian bonds could provide.

Source: Barchart.com, Bloomberg

Best hard commodity: Lumber

YTD return: 48.4 percent

Story: Lumber futures staged an incredible run beginning in early October. Citi strategist Tobias Levkovich cited Hurricane Sandy, which hit the Eastern seaboard of the United States in late October, as partly responsible for soaring demand for the commodity.

Deutsche Bank commodity analysts note that prices were undoubtedly helped by the burgeoning United States housing recovery that took off in mid-2012.

Best Phone: iPhone 5

The iPhone5 is one of the most innovative gadgets of 2012.

Apple subtlety redesigned the iPhone 4S and made the iPhone 5 taller and thinner.

Despite a huge Apple Maps debacle, easily scratched cases, and other hiccups, the iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in the first three days of release. Even today, the phone is so popular that it's tough to find one in stores.

Price: Starts at $199

Best Tablet: iPad Mini

The iPad Mini received a lot less hype than other Apple products that came out this year, but it's still one of the most innovative gadgets of 2012.

After Apple announced the Mini's existence in late October, everyone fell in love. In fact, Apple bloggers are calling the Mini "the real iPad."

The miniature size made the tablet much portable, and the fact that all of the regular iPad apps ran on the smaller device made people love it even more.

Price: Starts at $329

How To Beat 10 Unnecessary And Insulting Fees

$
0
0

angry call, voice mail, IRS

You give me something I want, we agree on a price, I pay for it. It’s the way the world has worked for thousands of years.

These days? Not so much.

Today, with an increasing number of businesses, it goes more like this: You provide something I want, we agree on a price, I pay, then you tack on fees to fatten your bottom line.

Unreasonable fees are more than just a drain on your finances. They’re insulting – the financial equivalent of a cold slap in the face.

Now, in no particular order, here are 10 of the world’s most insulting fees. They made my list for one of three reasons: They’re unreasonable, you’re getting little or nothing in return, or they’re ridiculously overpriced.

Airlines: Checked baggage fees

Most major carriers charge $25 to check one suitcase – a lot more if it’s oversized, overweight, or both.

This fee didn’t exist until recent years, and for good reason: The price of a plane ticket should obviously include luggage.

Isn’t that an integral part of traveling long distance? No other travel-related services – buses, trains, hotels, cabs, rental cars - charge for luggage.

This isn’t a fee – it’s a sophomoric attempt to disguise a higher price.

Workaround: There are two major airlines that don’t charge this insulting fee: Southwest and JetBlue. Fly them if you can.

If you can’t, check this chart or one like it to see how much your airline is charging and use that as an incentive to pack light.

Some airlines also allow you to avoid baggage fees by using their branded credit cards. For more ideas, see 10 Tips to Save on Baggage Fees.

Airlines: Carry-on baggage fees

At least when you pay to check a bag, there’s a service involved.

Someone has to load it, unload it, and make sure it gets safely back into your hands.

Charging for a carry-on bag is charging for nothing whatsoever. Nobody is touching your bag but you, and making this fee indefensible.

Fortunately, Spirit and Allegiant are the only airlines that do it, at least so far.

Workaround: Avoid flying Spirit, Allegiant, or any airline that charges for doing nothing. If they’re the only airlines available, drive. If that’s impossible, check with UPS or another freight carrier about shipping bags.

Airlines: Lap fees, pet fees

If you’ve got a child less than 2, it’s typically free to carry them on your lap for a domestic flight.

Leave the country, however, and you might pay a “lap fee” of 10 percent of the ticket cost. And not the cost of your ticket: a full-fare ticket – the most expensive available.

Delta, United, US Airways, and American all have some form of this policy, and for what? The airline is performing no service: no extra room, no assistance, nothing.

Ditto when you’re flying with Fido. If you have to ship your pet in the baggage compartment, you’d expect a handling fee.

But bring them with you in the cabin, and you’ll pay up to $125 each way – and the carrier counts as a carry-on. Again, the airline is doing nothing, but collecting a hefty fee.

Workaround: Check with the airline before you book the ticket to see what fees, if any, you can expect. If they’re high, shop around: Some airlines charge less than others.

Check this article for more specific strategies on lap fees, and this one for flying with pets.

Christmas is celebrated all over the world, but every community has developed its own unique holiday traditions.

Some are sweet, but others strike us as downright strange.

We've gathered up some of our favorite Christmas traditions from around the globe. Did we leave yours out? Let us know in the comments.

In Australia, Santa Claus pulls up on a surf board

It's summer down under on Christmas Day. Temperatures in December are between 68 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

So Santa pulls up on the beach on his surfboard. The country had a devastating Christmas in 1974, when Cyclone Tracy came through the Northern Territory and more than 60 people were killed.

In Austria, young men dress up as the Krampus and roam the streets to frighten children

In Austria, December is a time for festive events and frights.

Young men walk around dressed up as the Krampus, a devil-demon creature equipped with cowbells and rods, and usually accompanied by Nikolaus, a version of Santa Claus.

The Krampus will then roam the streets scaring adults and children.

In the Czech Republic, women submerge a branch of a cherry tree under water. If it blooms they will marry the next year

On Dec. 4, women in the Czech Republic place a cherry twig under water.

If it blooms before Christmas Eve it means she will marry in the next year.

We still have the Christmas Day releases of suspected Oscar front runner "Les Misérables" and Quentin Tarantino's gritty "Django Unchained."

While Box Office Mojo predicts both films will open to more than $100 million this weekend, how will they stack up to previous Christmas releases?

We've taken a look at the top Christmas Day debuts and it looks like this year's movies will blow all others – save possibly one – out of the water.

20 Fascinating Things We Saw At Manhattan's New Museum Of Mathematics

Museum of Math

The National Museum of Mathematics opened up December 15th in Midtown, and we had to check it out.

It's two stories packed with hi-tech computers and mathematical experiments that make this museum perfect for anyone from elementary school to a Ph. D program.

It's really rare that you see a museum that gets it right for every age, but I learned a ton of new things at MoMath.

Math professors and Rubik's Cube solver clubs hang out there. MoMath has everything from World War Two cryptography equipment to Android-powered exhibits every couple of feet.

MoMath just opened up on 26th street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue

While a lot of the presentation is aimed at school-age kids, a lot of the material is pulled directly out of Grad school level mathematics.

The 10 Best Chinese Restaurants In New York City

Grand Sichuan St. Marks Place, Chinese Restaurant

It's Christmas Eve. That means that all over the world families are gathering together around dinner tables to celebrate.

But here in New York, we have our own tradition: eating at a Chinese restaurant.

In the beloved tradition of eating Chinese food on Christmas, we've found the best Chinese restaurants in Manhattan.

Grand Sichuan

19-23 Saint Marks Place

There are several branches of the local Grand Sichuan chain, but the one on St. Marks Place is arguably the best one in the city.

The menu of traditional Sichuan dishes is so extensive that you may have trouble choosing.

Hot Kitchen

104 2nd Ave.

Hot Kitchen serves spicy Sichuan cuisine in a low-key spot in the East Village. The menu features lots of seafood dishes, like soft-shell crab and steamed whole fish with hot bean sauce.

Dishes are served family-style, so this place is best for groups.

Joe's Shanghai

9 Pell St.

Joe's Shanghai is famous for its soup dumplings, called Xiao Long Bao or "Little Dumplings in the Basket."

They come in either pork or crab meat varieties, served in a bamboo basket. Bite the edge of the dumpling and carefully slurp up the soup, being careful to avoid spilling the piping hot broth all over you.

Some people say Joe's Shanghai is overrated and expensive with long lines. Others swear by it. Love it or hate it, this place is an institution.

Two Months After Sandy, Rockaway Beach Is Still Suffering [PHOTOS]

Nearly two months after Hurricane Sandy, the devasted community of Rockaway Beach, N.Y. is still reeling.

Pieces of the boardwalk are littered across the beach, homes need to be cleaned in full hazmat gear, and insurance claims are only just starting to get resolved if at all.

Click here to see photos >

Many people we spoke to said they felt let down by the city government and that local business owners and individuals from the community played a crucial role in organizing volunteers and donations. Devin Fitzgerald, a resident of the area, said, "I don't know how we would have survived without the community pulling together."

We saw the way the community can rally together over Thanksgiving when Occupy Sandy and independent volunteers organized dinners throughout the area. Many of these were grassroots efforts that relied on social media to get the word out.

As the recovery process continues, the needs of the community have shifted away from emergency items like food, clothing, and cleaning supplies to financial aid, legal services for FEMA/insurance claims, and building supplies. Some people we spoke to said their insurance claims have been denied, and that claims evaluators only came last week to survey home damage.

As of December 17, over 507,950 individuals have registered for FEMA assistance and $1.09 billion in aid will be distributed as a result of Sandy, according to the government agency. Some people said they had received FEMA aid, but others said they were denied because of insurance issues.

Electricity and power are back, but phone service has been slower in returning, especially for people who rely on copper land lines instead of fiber-optic connections. The people using the older service tend to be older themselves and lower-income, some don't even have cell-phones, and the lack of phone service is preventing them from contacting family and insurance.

Richard Ganci, who lives on B 115th St, spent 54 days without phone service, just getting it back this past week. He missed his uncle's funeral two weeks ago because his phone was out. Ganci has been using prepaid cell phones but has had trouble securing them and getting minutes because many stores in the area remain closed. He has received FEMA aid but has been having trouble getting through to insurance without a working landline.

Despite the challenges, people are moving forward.

In a small restaurant bar by the beach, many locals gathered to distribute toys, through a toy drive organized by Rockaways-native Donna Miley-Figueroa, who lives in Manhattan now. The community came together to relax, sip eggnog, and enjoy the holiday spirit, gathering their spirit for the long rebuilding process ahead.

The season of gift giving.

Despite the damage this store is getting back on its feet and has opened its doors.

However, many stores remain closed.

Here Are Santa's Most Scandalous Ads: From Cigarettes To Booze

Santa Claus has starred in many ad campaigns — and some of them would move him onto the naughty list.

While St. Nick is most famous for Coca-Cola commercials, advertisers have also put his face in ads with guns, booze, cigarettes, and girls.

Here are Santa's most surprising ad campaigns.

The Scottsdale Gun Club in Arizona raised some eyebrows when its website began telling families to "Get Your Holiday Picture With Santa And His Machine Guns!"

Read more here>

But Santa has been a gun spokesperson since 1966. This ad in Boy's Life asks kids to leave the photo of the gun they want "On Dad's desk. On Mom's vanity table ... P.S. Remington ammunition makes a dandy Christmas present too."

Santa was seen with firearms even when he wasn't in a gun ad. While there isn't anything scandalous about Santa shilling button-down shirts, it is shocking to see St. Nick threatening suicide if he doesn't get said shirts.

15 Famous Child Geniuses

$

Colin Carlson

In the debate over IQ vs. hard work, there's an ongoing discussion about how much perceived talent can be traced back to genetics. For most of the population, the line is blurry. But in some cases, it's very clear that a child is a prodigy.

We've compiled a list of 15 of the most famous child geniuses, some in recent history, and others who influenced our culture centuries ago.

Akrit Jaswal—The seven-year-old surgeon

At seven years old, Akrit Jaswal added “surgeon” to his resume.

Born in 1993, the child surgeon became India’s youngest physician and university student.

The only downfall is that the young intellect knows just how gifted he is, reportedly saying, “People saw my potential and wanted to help me excel in life…I think they're of above average intelligence, but not as clever as me."

Jaswal has an estimated IQ of 146.

Jacob Barnett—The next Nobel Peace Prize winner

At the age of eight, Jacob Barnett began attending Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

With an IQ of 170 – higher than Albert Einstein’s – Barnett could be in line for a future Nobel Peace Prize, according to one of the world's leading scientists and the 13-year-old's professor at college.

His mother told the Indianapolis Star that her son tested out of algebra 1 and 2, geometry, trigonometry and calculus after two-weeks of studying on the front porch.

Barnett has not let Aspergers Syndrome, a mild form of autism, slow him down.

Since enrollment, Barnett has been taking advanced astrophysics classes and is working on expanding Einstein’s theory of relativity. He is also working on challenging the Big Bang theory. He delivered a TEDxTeen talk in 2012, "Forget What You Know."

Shakuntala Devi—The “Hindu Mathematical Wizardess”

Born in 1939 in Bangalore, India to a lion tamer father, Shakuntala Devi started her relationship with numbers through card tricks she played with her father at the age of three.

Nicknamed the “Human Computer,” and “Hindu Mathematical Wizardess” Devi demonstrated her mathematics abilities at the University of Mysore and Annamalai University as a child.

Her talent has been mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records several times, such as when she extracted the 23rd root of a 201-digit number mentally and when she found the cube root of 332,812,557 in seconds.

In 2006, she published “In the Wonderland of Numbers,” a story about a girl fascinated with digits.

While experimenting with different formats, German photographer Jakob Wagner realized that long exposure shots taken at night could reveal things that could not be seen by the naked eye.

The realization inspired him to travel around the world shooting nighttime photos of cities, eventually culminating in his "Nightscapes" series.

We came across the panoramic photos the other day and were totally enthralled. Wagner has been kind enough to share some images from the series with us; you can see more of his work on his website.

This shot, taken from Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, was one of Wagner's favorite shots from the series.

The First Apps To Install On Your New iPad (AAPL)

girl multitasking laptop tablet ipad

So you got a new iPad or iPad Mini for Christmas.

Now what?

Might we suggest loading it up with apps to make it even more indispensable?

From games to utilities, these are the most essential add-ons to get started with your new tablet.

Letterpress

One of the runaway favorites of the App Store in 2012, Letterpress is an asynchronous, turn-based word game to play with your friends. It's by Loren Brichter, the guy who made Tweetie, an early Twitter client which became the basis for the company's official mobile app.

Price:Free

Netflix

One of the definitive destinations for streaming video on the Web. If you've got a streaming subscription, installing the app should be a no-brainer—and if you don't, the ease of viewing videos on a tablet is a reason to consider joining Netflix.

Price:Free for the app; $7.99/mo. for access to Netflix's streaming movie and TV-show library

Hulu Plus

Ditto for Hulu Plus—if you're a subscriber, get the app on your iPad posthaste.

Note that free watching on Hulu.com isn't an option on the iPad. Hulu requires a paid subscription for mobile viewing—and tablets are considered mobile, so you'll need to pay for some shows you can watch free on a laptop. "We know, it's frustrating," Hulu explains in its FAQ. It has to do with licensing deals. The subscription is good on all your devices, though.

Price:Free; $7.99/mo. for subscription.

The 12 Most Brazen Fugitives From History

$

Ruth Eisemann Schier

In 1949, a Washington Daily News reporter asked the FBI to name the "toughest guys" it was investigating at the time.

The piece generated so much publicity that J. Edgar Hoover decided to make the "Most Wanted" list a permanent program.

So with the first official "Most Wanted" list published in 1950, came more than 400 fugitives over six decades to be chased by the FBI.

We have culled through that list to find the most brazen fugitives — including prison escapees, bank robbers, and kidnappers — and the first-ever woman to appear on the list, Ruth Eisemann-Schier.

Thomas James Holden

Although Holden made the list in 1950, his record went way back. Most interestingly of all, he was convicted of robbing a mail train in the late 1920s. This was during the "easy days," as the FBI calls them, when gangs roamed the Midwest without much trouble from the authorities. In 1930, Holden escaped from federal prison in Kansas, eventually going back to his mobster buddies — among them, Verne Miller and Frank Nash. Later on, in 1950, he was placed on the "most wanted" list for shooting his wife and her two brothers after a drinking party. He was captured the following year.

Source: FBI

Gerhard Arthur Puff

There are few things that Puff wasn't convicted of. He started at the age of 20 with disorderly conduct and stealing domestic animals. Later he added on: bank robbery, car theft, and murder. After several stints in prison and one escape, in 1953 Puff was convicted of killing an FBI agent and sentenced to die in the electric chair.

Eisemann-Schier became the first woman to claim a spot on the notorious list when she kidnapped the daughter of a millionaire and demanded a $500,000 ransom in 1968. The 26-year-old Eisemann-Schier and her boyfriend buried Barbara Mackle outside of Atlanta in a coffin with ventilation tubes and a little food. Mackle was found buried in the shallow grave 80 hours later, unharmed, while Eisemann-Schier was captured in Oklahoma several weeks later. She was pretending to be a 19-year-old college student.
