This crazy UFO house from the 1960s is now a gathering place for futurists

Big ideas can be traded anywhere, from coffee shops to college lecture halls.

British artist Craig Barnes offers a slightly more unique option: a retro-chic orb — one of 100 made in the 1960s that Barnes himself has refurbished.

It's called a Futuro house, and it's a come-all venue for thinkers and visionaries that sits on the roof at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where it will stay until next September.

Over the next year, visitors are encouraged to come discuss the world's biggest issues in a space perfectly fit for forward-thinking.

Barnes' love of Futuro houses goes back to his childhood, he tells Tech Insider.

It wasn't until years later, on a 2013 visit to see his extended family in Port Alfred, South Africa, that he happened upon a weathered metal structure that looked oddly familiar.

"I was sure I'd seen it in a book," Barnes recalls. "So I started researching the history of it and quickly found out it was a Futuro designed by the Finnish architect Matti Suuronen."

Barnes bought the house on an impulse, quickly getting to work on the refurbishing process despite having no idea where he would put the thing.

"You know, I don't live anywhere that's big enough to store it in pieces, let alone put it together," Barnes says. "So it was a kind of logistical roller coaster ride of a challenge since then."

Luckily, he got in touch with someone in early 2014 at Matt's Gallery, in East London, where they offered to host the Futuro house as part of a six-month exhibition.

To outsiders, the house looked like a spaceship touching down on Earth.

The house, otherwise known as Futuro 22, is built to accommodate roughly 30 people, Barnes says. Fully furnished, it weighs between six and seven tons.

Even in its short run at Matt's Gallery — the house was open to the public for only three months out of its full six-month stint — it'd already generated crazy amounts of buzz.

Questions abounded: What is that thing on the roof? Are we in trouble? That paint color is lovely, where can I find it?

12 psychological tricks to save more and spend less this holiday season

0

christmas market night

Between decorations, holiday feasts, Secret Santa exchanges at the office, and gifts for your family and friends, it's easy to blow through your paycheck during the holiday season

It doesn't help that most supermarkets and department stores are carefully engineered to get you to spend more.

To help keep more cash in your wallet this holiday season, we rounded up 12 simple strategies to help you trick yourself into spending less and saving more:

SEE ALSO: 19 tricks stores use to make you spend more money

Master the '10-second' rule.

"Whenever you're in a store and you pick up an item, hold it for ten seconds," writes founder of The Simple Dollar Trent Hamm, in his book, "365 Ways to Live Cheap."

"During those ten seconds, ask yourself if you really need it and also if that money wouldn't be better used somewhere else. You'll almost always find yourself putting that unnecessary item back on the shelf and walking away, quite proud that you didn't waste your money on something so unnecessary."

Put this strategy to test when you're shopping for stocking stuffers — it's easy to get carried away with small, relatively inexpensive presents, but a bunch of little purchases can add up over the course of the gift-giving season.

Practice the 'stranger test.'

Another quick and easy in-store trick: When deciding whether or not to make a purchase, imagine a stranger offering your would-be purchase in one hand and the cash it would take to buy it in the other. If you'd rather accept the cash, you might as well keep that money in your pocket.

Procrastinate on non-essential purchases.

There are times when procrastinating does have value. When it comes to discretionary spending, A. Noonan Moose from Frugal Fringe recommends putting off your purchase to give yourself time to find better prices and make better decisions. We highlighted a few of our favorite examples here.

This strategy translates well to buying gifts online: If you're deciding between a few choices, put all of them in your cart, and leave them for a few days without checking out (as long as you'll still have time for delivery before they're needed). In that time, an item might go out of stock and make your choice for you, you might be offered a retailer coupon by email, or the price might drop.

13 tricks to lead a simpler, happier life

0

happy jumping

Last year, Business Insider published a list of easy ways to simplify your life, featuring comments posted on the Quora thread, "How can I make my life simpler?"

Since then, the thread has ballooned to nearly 700 answers, with users from all over the world weighing in on how to eliminate physical and mental clutter, increase productivity, and ultimately be a happier person.

We picked out 13 recent responses that offer creative strategies for streamlining. Read on to find out what you can do to make your daily life a little bit easier.

SEE ALSO: 25 things I've learned in 9 years of simplifying my life

1. Make time for "meta-work."

Advance planning is key to simplicity because it helps prevent the panicky feeling that you're not focusing on what's most important.

"Organizing your to-do list or clearing out your desk don't seem like productive things to do,"writes Haider Al-Mosawi. "I call them 'meta-work.' They don't substitute for actual work (you want to do the tasks on your to-do list), but they do help cultivate mental clarity and allow you to become more productive when you are working."

2. Learn to prioritize.

Now that you've crafted that to-do list, it’s time to pare it down, says Nistha Tripathi, by eliminating any nonessential tasks.

Tripathi quotes Stephen Covey, author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People": "You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage — pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically, — to say 'no' to other things. And the way to do that is by having a bigger 'yes' burning inside."

3. Abandon the idea of a "bucket list."

Don't see your life as a race to accomplish goals that other people have set for you.

Writes Jim Stone: "If you read an article titled '100 movies you must see before you die,' don't buy into it. If you do, you'll either wind up watching 70 boring movies to get to 30 good ones, or you'll feel guilty about not finishing the list. Either way, it adds to your mental burden."

Here are some of the greatest Muslim-American athletes

In his Oval Office address on Sunday night, US President Barack Obama said that Muslim Americans are some of our greatest sports heroes.

"Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors, our coworkers, our sports heroes," he said.

Some thought that statement was bogus, like GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, who tweeted this Monday morning:

In fact, there are quite a few sports legends who happen to be Muslim Americans in addition to numerous Muslim-American athletes who are playing in the NBA and NFL today.

Here are a few:

How Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar went from homeless to top of the hip-hop game

kendrick lamar

Growing up in Compton, Kendrick Lamar, 28, saw the effects of gangs and experienced unfair treatment from police. He knew what it felt like to lose his home and move to a hotel with his family. The 28-year-old rapper drew on his experiences and the experiences of those around him for musical inspiration.

He quit drinking and smoking weed when he was around 16 or 17 and focused on his rap career, something he'd been interested in since watching Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur film the music video for "California Love."

He has since released a number of mixtapes and albums, but it was "good kid, m.A.A.d city" that placed him on the map and got him seven Grammy nominations in 2014.

He was snubbed that night, losing all seven categories he was nominated in, but the following year, he did end up winning two for his single "i."

This year, he has 11 nominations, and based on the response to his album "To Pimp a Butterfly," released in March, he's primed to take more awards home.

Get to know the rapper below:

Art Basel Miami is an international contemporary art fair held each year in Miami Beach.

But since it began in 2002 as an offshoot of the annual art fair in Basel, Switzerland, Art Basel Miami Beach has become as much about the parties as the art.

This year's fair brought out the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Sylvester Stallone, Bella Hadid, Paris Hilton, and many more.

The 12 states with the hottest housing markets

A new home is being built next to a home with a for sale sign on a street in Vienna, on the morning the National Association of Realtors issues its Pending Home Sales for February report, in Virginia March 27, 2014. REUTERS/Larry Downing

Home values continue to increase across the U.S., but some states are getting a bigger boost than others. Overall, home prices rose 6.8 percent in October versus a year ago, and 1 percent compared with September, according to CoreLogic’s most recent report.

Looking more closely at the data, only 12 states recorded price increases that exceeded the national average. Homes in the remaining 38 states and the District of Columbia fell below the average, with Louisiana and Mississippi posting year-over-year price declines in October.

12. Idaho had a 6.9% increase in home prices.

Ada County, the state’s most populous county, saw home sales rise 14.9 percent year over year in October. Homes spent 45 days on the market before being sold, down 22.4 percent from last year. A 38 percent increase in pending sales bodes well for next month’s sales numbers.

11. Texas saw a 7% increase in home prices.

Thanks to a healthy economy and strong population growth, home sales in Texas are on pace for a record-setting year, rising 7.8 percent in the third quarter. Luxury home sales have been particularly robust. Sales of homes priced at $1 million or more increased 9 percent in Austin, 13 percent in Houston, 15 percent in Dallas and 26 percent in San Antonio.

10. Utah had a 7.1% increase in home prices.

September sales, the most recent data available, jumped 15.4 percent from a year before. Salt Lake County, which made up 30 percent of the state’s sales, experienced a 16 percent leap in sales volume. Through September, sales are 19 percent stronger than in the same period in 2014. Rich County put up the best performance in September. Closed sales there tripled to 12 sales from four last year.

Tom Brady

It has been a tumultuous 12 months for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Rather than taking a victory lap after winning their fourth Super Bowl, the Patriots have been embroiled in the never-ending scandal we have come to know as Deflategate.

Already one of the NFL's most intense and focused players, the scandal seems to have lit a fire under Brady, leading to some unbridled emotions captured by photographers for the Associated Press, Getty, and Reuters.

Below are some of the best photos from Brady's season of reclamation.

Away from the field, Brady has appeared uneasy.

But on the field, his intensity this season has been unmatched.

Since Game 1, Brady has been as intense and fired up as ever.

Lamborghini may produce this outrageous concept car from 2013

Lamborghini created the Egoista concept car in May 2013 — a futuristic looking one-seater with an amazing amount of horsepower.

lamborghini egoista

Now Lamborghini has filed to trademark the Egoista name, Autoblog first reported. That doesn't necessarily mean the car is being put into production, but it could mean we haven't seen the last of it.

Here's a look at the Lamborghini Egoista and what we know about it:

The Egoista was designed in 2013 to tribute the 50th anniversary of Lamborghini.

A total of 350 sports cars made their way from Bologna to Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Ferruccio Lamborghini introduced his automobile business to the world in 1963 at Sant'Agata Bolognese.

The Egoista, which was made for the event, was never displayed at any auto show. It was put on permanent display in the Lamborghini Museum in Sant'Agata Bolognese in 2014, a year after it was introduced to the world.

christmas

'Tis the season to update your soon-to-be winter wardrobe with one of fashion's most festive items: the holiday sweater. No longer reserved for your grandpa, the holiday sweater offers an easy, festive and stylish option that can take you from the office holiday party to opening gifts on Christmas morning with your parents — if you know how to do it right.

Here, we're laying out the five reasons why you'll want to wear your favorite holiday sweaters all year round.

Statement knitwear, heavy on graphic prints and patterns, happened to be a major trend that developed on this season’s runways. That’s why it’s not a coincidence that brands like Pringle of Scotland, Ralph Lauren and Viktor & Rolf included a healthy dose of Fair Isle and Nordic-printed sweaters into their fall 2015 collections. British label E. Tautz styled their Nordic crew neck (left, $664.00) and Icelandic roll neck sweaters (right, $748.00) with pared down separates. Building your outfits around a statement piece is an easy way to free your look from appearing too busy. You’ll want to keep your other pieces easy and simple so they’re not fighting for the attention your sweater is already commanding.

Layer up with the right button-down

If you’re interested in adding a little holiday spice to your look, a good chambray and/or denim button down — not to mention buffalo plaid — is the perfect alternative to the classic white oxford shirt. Preston Konrad, a New York City based fashion stylist, blogger and television personality, shows you how it’s done in a festive Fair Isle knit styled over a denim button-down — both by Topman.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: Turtlenecks are back in action and a great way to elevate your holiday look. A solid white, grey or black roll neck will usually do the trick. Take notes from male model Jason Ellis, posing for British publication The Guardian, in a knitwear-inspired fashion spread. His white turtleneck layered beneath his Nordic-printed knit adds an interesting new element to his outfit.

Nowadays, $1 is synonymous with Washington, the $5 with Lincoln, and the $100 with Ben Franklin.

But these major historical figures didn't always grace United States currency.

Back in the day, there were US bills that featured a woman, a Native American chief, and even personifications of science, electricity, and commerce.

CreditRepair.com created seven gifs showing the major design changes in US currency over the years starting from 1862.

The French automaker Citroën recently announced it is releasing its E-Mehari, an all-electric concept car to the public early next year.

Citroën e-mehari

The car manufacturer published an eccentric video on Monday to announce the upcoming arrival of the E-Mehari, which will officially launch in France sometime in Spring 2016. The car was originally unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

Here's a closer look at the super vibrant E-Mehari:

The car comes in bright red, yellow, and teal, which is "designed to appeal to customers looking for an alternative vehicle with a positive outlook on life," according to the press release announcement.

Looks like a pretty happy car.

The car has an impressive range of 124 miles when driving in the city, but that drops during non-urban driving experiences to a 62-mile range.

That doesn't come close to making our top 10 list of electric vehicles with the best range.

15 reasons you should buy a PlayStation 4 right now

0
0

The PlayStation 4 is the console to buy this holiday.

ps4-20-year-anny

Maybe you already have one? 30 million-ish folks already do, and that's for good reason: it's fast and easy to use, it's got great games, and it does lots of cool stuff.

Or maybe you're not convinced? That's possible: $299 is a lot of money to drop. Oh, you haven't heard? The PlayStation 4 is currently on sale with one of two pretty great, totally free games, for $299. Now is quite literally the best time to buy a PlayStation 4 (especially before Dec. 19).

In case that doesn't push you over the edge, here are 14 great reasons to pick up a PlayStation 4 right now.

1. It's less expensive than ever

This is the number one reason to buy a PlayStation 4 right now: it's currently on sale, in both the bundle seen above and in another that includes "Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection." Normally these bundles cost $349, as does the PlayStation 4 in general.

This deal only lasts until Dec. 19, so it's time to make moves if you're going to make moves.

2. PlayStation Plus continues to be the best deal in gaming

Do you like awesome games? 'Course you do. That's why you're considering buying a PlayStation 4 in the first place! How about awesome, free games? Because that's exactly what you'll get every month with a subscription to Sony's PlayStation Plus service. It enables online multiplayer play, sure, but more importantly you get free games every single month through the program. You keep them for as long as you stay subscribed. The service literally pays for itself in two months. It is the biggest no-brainer of all no-brainers.

3. "Bloodborne"

Listen, "Bloodborne" is not for the faint of heart. You see that monster up top? That's not concept art. You're the comparatively diminutive hunter in the foreground in this equation, and that giant monster is surprisingly fast. Do the math. "Bloodborne" is gorgeous/gruesome, tremendously challenging, and easily one of the best games of 2015. You can only play it on the PlayStation 4.
