13 things the best startup CEOs do better than everyone else

Elon Musk

Running a startup is hard.

But the ones that do well usually have a great CEO.

We went through Quora to find out what the best startup CEOs do to stand out from the rest.

SEE ALSO: 17 things people in Silicon Valley forget about the outside world

They are good at both hiring AND firing.

"Whenever you find a really great CEO you find someone who has a knack for hiring. That means selling other people on your dream or your business. Especially when it doesn't seem all that important or seems very risky. I used to work for a CEO who was awesome at hiring, but couldn't fire anyone. Doomed the business. Many of the best CEOs get others to follow no matter what."— Robert Scoble, Futurist at Rackspace

Being street smart is more important than being book smart.

"Getting out and understanding customers is far more important than book smarts or computer research."— Mark Suster, Partner at Upfront Ventures

Put your self-interest behind.

"Most entrepreneurs have a healthy dose of self-interest. However, serially successful startup leaders place their stakeholders' well being before their own personal gain. Situations inevitably arise in which key executives could covertly self-deal and enhance their financial outcomes at the expense of their fellow employees and investors. Consistent winners resist this temptation."— John Greathouse, Entrepreneur, Investor, and Professor

The perfect wine pairing for Cheetos — and other pairings you never thought you'd try but definitely should

food party super bowl

Many people still think of wine exclusively as a compliment for fine dining. And it is a great compliment to a special meal. But if that is the only time you break open a bottle of wine, you are missing out. It truly can be an everyday (or many times a week) accompaniment to meals... and snacks! Yes, wine and cheese is a great pairing. And a great steak and Cabernet Sauvignon or oysters and a crisp Chardonnay are classic combinations for a reason. But there are many other combinations that I love and recommend trying.

I've suggested 14 wines specific wines to pair with 8 common snacks/meals that I've tried and enjoyed tremendously.  Most of these wines are widely available but the important thing isn't the specific wine but the style of wine selected. Go to your favorite wine store and ask for something similar and you should find a good substitute for most of these wines very easily.

Let's begin our tasting.

Cheetos (Everyday Option) - Indaba Chenin Blanc 2015

The time-honored classic snack’s combination of fried corn, cheese, and salt just scream for a nice, crisp wine. The Indaba Chenin Blanc provides a lot of bang for the buck.  The high acidity of this white matches well the Cheetos and increases your production of saliva which helps boost your flavor receptors so you never get tired of this salty, cheesy goodness.  The wine typically sells for $13-15 per bottle.

Cheetos (Upscale Option) - Grgich Hills Chardonnay 2012

The Grgich Hills Chardonnay is a classic Napa Valley Chardonnay: extremely acidic and clean. Again, the acid makes the Cheetos pop.  If you're going to splurge this is an excellent choice for almost any food. This wine typically sells for roughly $40 a bottle. And why not Cheetos?

Your Favorite Takeout/Delivery Pizza (Everyday Option) - San Felice "Il Grigio" Chianti Classico 2012

Red wine can be extremely fruity.  Strong notes of cherry, strawberry, and so on really don't work well with pizza, as they tend to really clash with tomato sauce. So I gravitate to more earthy, "old world" reds from Italy, Spain, and occasionally France when eating any Italian American specialty.  The San Felice Chianti Classico is my go to choice, if I can find it.  The wine is less fruity and more earthy, which works well with your favorite pizza joint slice.  At roughly $15-17 a bottle, this wine punches well above its weight class and is great for pretty much any meal featuring a red sauce (or chicken and pork.)  For a bonus upscale choice, go with any of San Felice's more expensive wines — I've yet to try anything from this producer I didn't like.

21 ways to stop procrastinating right now

It's easy to tell ourselves we'll get to something "later." It's especially tempting to put off important tasks when we've got things like Instagram and Netflix at our fingertips.

But procrastinating can be costly, especially at work.

To stop, you'll first need to understand the causes and temptations of procrastination. Then you'll want to follow these 21 steps:

Vivian Giang contributed to a previous version of this article.

DON'T MISS: The 27 jobs that are most damaging to your health

1. Fix up your workplace.

Since you'll be spending most of your waking hours at your desk, you might as well make it an inspiring space you enjoy working at, writes blogger Sam Cleasby on metro.co.uk

"You are never going to work your best if you are in a hovel," she explains.

To add some personal and creative touches, Cleasby says she decorates her desk with photos of her friends and family, and other items that make her smile during the workday. "It cheers me up to have those things in my eye line," she writes.

2. Schedule your time in smaller increments.

If your time frame is too far off in the future, deadlines becomes generalities, writes psychologist Susan K. Perry for psychologytoday.com.

To fix this, she advises planning your goals in smaller time increments.

For example, she says, if you plan on writing four chapters of your soon-to-be-published book in a month, you won't consider yourself actually procrastinating until the fourth week.

"There is a difference between saying, 'I'll write one chapter a week' and saying, 'I'll write four chapters a month,'" she writes.

3. Create hard-and-fast deadlines.

Instead of thinking you will work on your project for three hours every morning, determine when you want certain tasks completed, Perry writes on psychologytoday.com

"If the boss hands you an assignment, she doesn't say, 'Work on this each day,'" she writes. "No, she says, 'Have this on my desk by next Friday."

Tesla had problems with its Falcon Wing doors — but crazy car doors have a long history (tsla)

Tesla Model X Falcon Wing

Tesla's Falcon Wing doors are among the most recognizable features found on any car on the market today. No other SUV, let alone mass-production vehicle, is fitted with doors that are quite as interesting and packed with technology as the Falcon Wings. Not only are they they electronic — they're packed with a variety of sensors that can detect how much room there is around the car to prevent dings and dents.

From the get-go, people recognized that there would be engineering challenges associated with putting together doors as complex as those found the X. As it turns out, Tesla did indeed encounter for than a few problems getting these smart doors to work properly.

According to a lawsuit filed by the automaker in Federal court this week, Tesla ran into numerous challenges including a planned hydraulic actuation system that overheated, leaked fluid and drooped. In fact, Tesla had to completely scrap the hydraulic system and design an electric one just four months prior to the roll out of the production cars.

In a press conference at the launch of the Model X, CEO Elon Musk admitted that the some of the SUV's tech features — such as the doors — proved to be an absolutely nightmare to put into production.

But Tesla isn't the first company to come face-to-face with a an unconventional door system. From the Lincoln Continental's "suicide doors" to the DeLorean's "gullwings," the automotive history books are bedecked with funky door designs.

The most common doors these days are the swingout and the sliding designs. With the exception of a few exotics, virtually every car in the world today use these two formats. So why not others? Well they're unconventional for a reason. The aesthetic beauty of designs such as the gullwing belie their practical shortcomings.

Upswing doors tend to have a higher propensity for leaking and a higher center gravity, which make the car less stable around corners. Furthermore, getting out of a car with gullwing doors if the vehicle rolls over on its roof is particularly tricky. Mercedes had to resort to using explosive bolts on the door hinges that trigger if the car rolls over.

Eccentricities aside, upswinging doors tend to be part some of the most exquisitely designed cars in the world.

Here's a collection of some of the more memorable door designs.

The Falcon Wing doors on the Tesla Model X are one of the electric crossover's most distinct features. The doors are controlled by a series of electric actuators and have the first ultrasonic sensors that can see through metal.

Unlike other upswinging door designs, the Falcon Wings are double-hinged, which gives them an added level of dexterity.

Due to the Model X's sizable battery pack mounted under the passenger cabin, the heavy Falcon Wing doors do not destabilize the crossover in corners.

9 ways celebrities stay lean and fit — and whether you should follow in their footsteps

When it comes to working out, everyone has their favorite method — including celebrities.

But not all types of exercise carry the same benefit. Which one you do depends on your goals: Do you want to bulk up? Slim down? Or just get fit and healthy?

Given all the different advice out there, it's important to know what the research supports.

Here are the workout regimens of some of our favorite celebrities, which we've evaluated according to science.

READ NEXT: Most celebrity diets are bogus, but here are the ones you should consider

SEE ALSO: We're finding more and more evidence of the link between exercise and healthy brains

Taylor Swift keeps a beat on the treadmill.

The scoop: When the pop diva is on the road touring, she makes sure to spend an hour on the treadmill every day. "For me, running is about blasting a whole bunch of new songs and running to the beat. It's also good because it makes me find a gym wherever I am," Swift said, according to WebMD.

Should you do it? Yes! Running is a great form of exercise. A 2014 study of more than 55,000 adults published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiologists found that runners were 30% less likely to die of any cause, and 45% less likely to die of cardiovascular causes, compared with nonrunners. And short, high-intensity runs may have many of the same benefits as longer runs, research suggests.

Michael B. Jordan did an intense workout for "Creed."

The scoop: To get ridiculously ripped to play a boxer in the new Rocky movie, "Creed," Jordan worked with personal trainer Corey Calliet. His workouts included 45-60 minutes of cardio, boxing training, and an intense regimen of sit-ups, push-ups, squats, and other exercises, according to Men's Journal. (See the full workout here.) He paired these workouts with a strict high-protein diet to build muscle.

Should you do it? Probably not. Unless you're planning to star in a boxing movie, you don't need to follow such an extreme workout plan. The cardio workouts and high-intensity exercises may be good for you, but boxing and the head injuries it causes are linked with a host of problems, including chronic traumatic brain injury, which in the long term can lead to punch-drunk syndrome, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a tragic brain disorder also found in football players.

Kim Kardashian sweats it out at Barry's Bootcamp.

The scoop: The reality-TV star is just one of many celebrity devotees of Barry's Bootcamp, a popular fitness studio that debuted in California in 1998 and now has 18 locations around the US, Norway, and England. The nightclub-esque gym offers hour-long workouts that include 25-30 minutes of interval cardiovascular treadmill routines and 25-30 minutes of strength training with free weights, resistance bands, medicine balls, and other equipment.

Should you do it? Perhaps. One of our reporters tried a week of Barry's workouts in Manhattan, and concluded that the classes helped her build endurance and shave more than a minute off her mile time. Also, studies show that interval training may have many of the same benefits as longer workouts. But it ain't cheap: Though prices vary, a single class at the Chelsea location will set you back $34.

On Sunday, the New England Patriots will take on the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game.

If the Pats win, it will mark their seventh AFC title under head coach Bill Belichick.

While Belichick has become synonymous with the Patriots and their winning ways, he travelled a long road in coaching before landing at his current position, a journey that he started as a 22-year-old mailing out letters asking for a coaching job.

Below we will take a look at Belichick's career and how he rose to become one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.

Belichick's father, Steve Belichick, was considered one of the great football scouts of his time, serving as an assistant for 30 years at Vanderbilt, North Carolina, and the Naval Academy. He also wrote a book, "Football Scouting Methods."

These 10 high-fat foods are actually good for you

$

the melt, grilled cheese, mac daddy

Ever since fat was demonized, people started eating more sugar, refined carbs, and processed foods instead.

As a result, the entire world has become fatter and sicker. However, times are changing. Studies now show that fat, including saturated fat, isn’t the devil it was made out to be (1, 2).

All sorts of healthy foods that happen to contain fat have now returned to the “superfood" scene.

Here are 10 high-fat foods that are actually incredibly healthy and nutritious.

1. Avocados

The avocado is different from most other fruits. Whereas most fruits primarily contain carbs, avocados are loaded with fats. In fact, avocados are about 77% fat by calories, making them even higher in fat than most animal foods (3).

The main fatty acid is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid. This is also the predominant fatty acid in olive oil, associated with various health benefits (4, 5).

Avocados are among the best sources of potassium in the diet, even containing 40% more potassium than bananas, a typical high-potassium food.

They're also a great source of fiber, and studies have shown that they can lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while raising HDL (the "good”) cholesterol (6, 7, 8). Even though they are high in fat and calories, one study shows that people who eat avocados tend to weigh less and have less belly fat than those who don't (9).

Bottom Line: Avocados are a fruit, with fat at 77% of calories. They are an excellent source of potassium and fiber, and have been shown to have major benefits for cardiovascular health.

2. Cheese

Cheese is incredibly nutritious. This makes sense, given that an entire cup of milk is used to produce a single thick slice of cheese.

It is a great source of calcium, vitamin B12, phosphorus, and selenium, and contains all sorts of other nutrients (10). It is also very rich in protein, with a single thick slice of cheese containing 6.7 grams of protein, the same as a glass of milk.

Cheese, like other high-fat dairy products, also contains powerful fatty acids that have been linked to all sorts of benefits, including reduced risk of type 2 diabetes (11).

Bottom Line: Cheese is incredibly nutritious, and a single slice contains a similar amount of nutrients as a glass of milk. It is a great source of vitamins, minerals, quality proteins, and healthy fats.

3. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is one of those rare health foods that actually taste incredible.

It is very high in fat, with fat at around 65% of calories. Dark chocolate is 11% fiber and contains over 50% of the RDA for iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese (12).

It is also loaded with antioxidants, so much that it is one of the highest-scoring foods tested, even outranking blueberries (13).

Some of the antioxidants in it have potent biological activity, and can lower blood pressure and protect LDL cholesterol in the blood from becoming oxidized (14, 15).

Studies also show that people who eat dark chocolate five or more times per week are less than half as likely to die from heart disease, compared to people who don't eat dark chocolate (16, 17). There are also some studies showing that dark chocolate can improve brain function, and protect your skin from damage when exposed to the sun (18, 19).

Just make sure to choose quality dark chocolate, with at least 70% cocoa.

Bottom Line: Dark chocolate is high in fat, but loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. It is very effective at improving cardiovascular health.

Get out in nature.

If you're feeling down, it might be because you're not spending enough time in nature. Living in cities has been linked to stress and mental illness, but a dose of greenery could go a long way.

In one 2012 study published in the Journal Psychological Science, researchers gave more than 10,000 people questionnaires about their mental health over nearly two decades, and found that people who lived in urban areas with the most green space (such as parks) reported feeling the least mental distress and the highest well-being.

But you don't need to live near a park to get all its benefits —preliminary research suggests that even a 90-minute walk in nature can chase away negative thoughts.

Listen to happy music.

Often all it takes is some upbeat tunes to shrug away those sad feelings.

A 2013 study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who listened to positive music while attempting to improve their mood reported feeling happier than people who listened to music that wasn't positive, or didn't actively try to boost their mood. So crank up the Pharrell Williams!

Do something awe-inspiring!

If you want to stop feeling awful and start feeling awesome, consider this: Several recent studies have found that experiencing a sense of awe— the feeling you get looking up into the night sky, for example — can leave you feeling less stressed and more satisfied.

As part of a two-part study published in 2015, students filled out a questionnaire and submitted samples of their spit for analysis. The students who said they had recently had awe-inspiring experiences had lower levels of a stress-related substance called interleukin-6 in their spit, compared with those who didn't feel awe.

So next time you're feeling blue, why not take a scenic hike or watch the sunrise?

The US has an enormous economy, and that economy is the sum of the economies of 50 states and the District of Columbia.

We ranked the economies of all the states and DC on seven measures: unemployment rates; GDP per capita; average weekly wages; recent growth rates for nonfarm payroll jobs; GDP; house prices; and wages. For more on our methodology, click here.

In addition to looking at some of the economic metrics that went into the ranking, we identified a symbol for each state and DC, according to Wikipedia.

West Virginia was the only state with a decline in home prices between Q3 2014 and Q3 2015, with prices falling by 0.1%. The state's labor market is also suffering: The November 2015 unemployment rate of 6.5% was the third highest in the country, and West Virginia was one of only five states to see a drop in nonfarm payroll employment between November 2014 and November 2015, with a 1.4% decline.

50. New Mexico

New Mexico's November unemployment rate of 6.8% was the highest among the states and DC. Wages are low and stagnant: The October 2015 average weekly wage of $709 was the third lowest in the country. Wages fell 0.7% between October 2014 and October 2015, the seventh-worst change.

49. Oklahoma

Oklahoma has been a huge oil-producing state, and while drilling-heavy states have tended to do well in previous editions of our rankings, the collapse in oil prices and in active drilling rigs is starting to hurt.

Oklahoma was one of just four states with negative GDP growth in Q2 2015, and its annualized decline of 2.4% was the worst in the country. The state 0.1% decline in nonfarm payroll jobs between November 2014 and November 2015, the fifth-worst rate among the states and DC. 2015 was the hottest year in recorded history. By far.

For some, warmer temps offered a welcome chance to bask in the sun.

In 2015 the surface temperature of the Earth was about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average global temperature of the entire 20th century.

Here are moments captured by Reuters photographers throughout the year, revealing how people all around the world coped with the changing climate.

Alicia Vikander

Just in 2015, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander played a famous painter, a secret agent, and an artificial intelligence that wants to be human.

It's been quite a year for the 27-year-old, and it might all end with her receiving an Oscar for her nominated role in "The Danish Girl."

Playing artist Gerda Wegener in the film, Vikander gives a scene-stealing performance as the wife of fellow artist Lili Elbe (played by Eddie Redmayne), one of the first identifiable recipients of sex-reassignment surgery.

But it's just the latest in a stellar series of performances Vikander has done, which also includes the hit indie film "Ex Machina."

Let's learn more about this star on the rise.

Vikander's first taste of success came in 2007 with the Swedish soap opera "Andra Avenyn" ("Second Avenue"), which looked at the lives of a group of people living in the second-largest city in Sweden.

In 2009, she starred in her first feature film, "Pure," in which she plays a troubled 20-year-old who, in leaving her family life, ends up in the arms of a married man.

Vikander then found notice in the US playing Kitty in the 2012 adaptation of the Tolstoy classic "Anna Karenina," starring Keira Knightley in the lead role.

There's actually a lot of snow in New York!

New York snow15

Last year, there was supposed to be a huge blizzard in New York.

The media hyperventilated for days, and the forecasts got so dire that New York's nanny-ish mayor closed the entire city before a single flake had fallen.

Of course, the forecasts proved overblown, and we got a pathetic six inches. So New York businesses lost billions of dollars-worth of revenue and productivity for nothing.

This year, thankfully, the predicted "snowmageddon" hit on a Saturday, so we didn't have to worry about the mayor's tendency toward hysteria hurting the economy.

And the storm actually over-delivered!

We're about 18 hours into it, and an impressive 20-25 inches have fallen.

Check out the scene just now in Park Slope, Brooklyn...

People move for many different reasons. For instance, some get new jobs, others retire, and some just want to be closer to their families.

While many people in the US move within the same state — the Census Bureau estimated in 2011 that 40% of moves are within 50 miles — there are patterns for those who did make interstate moves, according to Atlas Van Lines, a national moving company.

Atlas looked at 77,705 interstate moves and found that 18 states had more people moving out than in, whereas 12 had the reverse happen. We rounded up the 18 that had outflows for 2015. Most are in the upper-Midwest, which Atlas said has been on an outbound trend for a while.

"The Midwestern states experienced a major shift to outbound moves, with Wisconsin, Iowa and South Dakota going from balanced to outbound in 2015," said the report. "Similar to 2013 and 2014, North Dakota was the only state in the region to register as inbound."

See the states that topped the list, in order from lowest to higher percentage outbound migration:
