How The iPad Changed The World In Three Short Years (AAPL)

Steve Jobs introduces the iPad

Three years ago today, on January 27, 2010, Steve Jobs stood on a stage in San Francisco.

First he talked about how Apple invented the modern laptop in 1991 and revolutionized the smartphone with the iPhone in 2007.

Then he asked: "Is there room for a third category of device in the middle? Something that's between a laptop and a smartphone?"

After trashing an existing category of devices – the netbook – Jobs's tone of voice changed. It grew hushed and fervent.

And then he said: "We think we've got something that is. We'd like to show it to you today for the first time. And we call it…the iPad."

The world hasn't been the same since.

interactive pool party

Brooklyn-based art studio Red Paper Heart recently help put on the ultimate pool party.

That's because UrbanDaddy challenged the art studio to create an epic, interactive experience in water.

"Our desire was to create animations that partygoers could swim through," the team wrote on Behance. "Initially we had no idea how to make this a reality."

They ended up putting 65,000 ping pong balls in a pool, mounted three high lumen projectors above the pool, and used a self-made iPhone application to remotely control the visuals.

"The biggest surprise of the night was how fun it was to swim through the ping pong balls," Zander Brimijoin, a media artist at Red Paper Heart, tells Business Insider. "As you swim you hear the clicking of 1000s of ping pong balls clacking together. It's hard to describe why, but it was immensely satisfying sound."

The result was amazing.

First they filled the pool with 65,000 ping pong balls

They created a playful surface for sound reactive animations

Right now, you're probably sitting on your couch with a laptop in your lap, a tablet in your hands, or a smartphone in your palm.

You're moving around the Internet, sending emails, watching videos, and reading this post.

It can seem like those activities take place in a non-physical, vaporous world.

There are no wires connecting you to the Internet, no hoses pumping, and no gears whirring.

It all seems very airy - almost magical.

It isn't!

Your emails, this website, and the YouTube videos you watch are stored in a very physical place. Accessing them is a very phsycial process.

It starts with you using a Google Webpage, maybe for a search

Your clicks and queries end up here, at a Google server farm near you

15 Of The Most Sarcastic Amazon Product Reviews Ever

$

relaxman

Here's the problem: You've got a new product. You want to sell it on Amazon. Commenters then ruthlessly lampoon your company by posting sarcastic reviews underneath it.

The reviews become a bigger draw than your product.

Do you enjoy the extra traffic — and possible sales — your Amazon page will receive? Or do you remove the product from sale to protect your brand?

Here are 15 products sold on Amazon that fell  victim to the meme of over-the-top sarcastic product reviews, from the three-wolf T-shirt ("I, like a wolf, am a mysterious loner") to the banana slicer ("my parole officer introduced me to this kitchen marvel and my life was changed.")

Three Wolf Man shirt

"This item has wolves on it which makes it intrinsically sweet and worth 5 stars by itself, but once I tried it on, that's when the magic happened. After checking to ensure that the shirt would properly cover my girth, I walked from my trailer to Wal-mart with the shirt on and was immediately approached by women. The women knew from the wolves on my shirt that I, like a wolf, am a mysterious loner who knows how to 'howl at the moon' from time to time (if you catch my drift!). The women that approached me wanted to know if I would be their boyfriend and/or give them money for something they called me th. I told them no, because they didn't have enough teeth, and frankly a man with a wolf-shirt shouldn't settle for the first thing that comes to him."

Bic for Her Pens

"I never did very well at school. I wanted to learn and it felt like all the words I needed were right there in my head, but I just couldn’t get them onto the paper in front of me. If I really pushed myself, I could sometimes manage to draw pretty flowers in the margins but this didn’t please Sir and I was soon in all the bottom sets. What really confused me is that I had no problems in cookery or textiles. At the time I didn’t understand why I could grip and use a wooden spoon or sewing needle but couldn’t properly hold my black-coloured pen for more than 45 seconds without dropping it on the floor and weeping.

Things were a bit better when I left school to go and work sweeping up hair at the local salon – yet again, the broom seemed to just fit into my grip as if it was meant to be there – and I saved up to buy a pink laptop. I still had trouble writing for a long time because, although the case was pink, the keys weren’t designed for female eyes which, as we all know, struggle to discern between shades of black and grey. I could write for about 4 minutes at a time, though, and that’s how I found out about these wonderful pens for girls like me."

Hutzler Banana Slicer

"For decades I have been trying to come up with an ideal way to slice a banana. 'Use a knife!' they say. Well...my parole officer won't allow me to be around knives. 'Shoot it with a gun!' Background check...HELLO! I had to resort to carefully attempt to slice those bananas with my bare hands. 99.9% of the time, I would get so frustrated that I just ended up squishing the fruit in my hands and throwing it against the wall in anger. Then, after a fit of banana-induced rage, my parole officer introduced me to this kitchen marvel and my life was changed. No longer consumed by seething anger and animosity towards thick-skinned yellow fruit, I was able to concentrate on my love of theatre and am writing a musical play about two lovers from rival gangs that just try to make it in the world. I think I'll call it South Side Story."

On the next few pages, we will take a look at how the cover of SI's Super Bowl issue has evolved over the years. GMO: China Is Marching Toward A Massive Credit Crisis

$

Huaxia bank protest

China has passed many reforms aimed at easing capital controls. But these are being rolled out slowly.

A meager deposit interest rate has forced people to turn to wealth management products and other risky investments.  And the recent credit crunch forced many into the unregulated shadow banking system.

In a new report, GMO's Edward Chancellor and Mike Monnelly warn of "acute fragility" in China's financial system, and write, "the public appearance is of a banking system with negligible levels of bad debts, ample liquidity, and low leverage. The reality, on closer inspection, looks rather different".

China has created too much credit too quickly.

The last big surge of credit came in 2009 when China unleashed 4 trillion yuan to help spur economic growth and employment.

"Since that date, China’s economy has become a credit junkie, requiring increasing amounts of debt to generate the same unit of growth. Between 2007 and 2012, the ratio of credit to GDP climbed to more than 190%, an increase of 60 percentage points." In 2012, new credit to the non-financial sector totaled 15.5 trillion, that's equivalent to 33 percent of 2011 GDP.

Source: GMO

China also has significantly more debt than its emerging market peers.

Source: GMO

A lot of debt is sustained by real estate which is offered as collateral, and credit booms end when property bubbles burst.

"Recent research suggests that credit booms are more likely to end in severe busts when they coincide with property bubbles."

A lot of China's debt is supported by real estate which is put up as collateral for the loans. Banks' official exposure to property is listed as 22 percent of the loan book. But that doesn't account for exposure to real estate through their loans to local government financing vehicles (LGFVs) and off-balance sheet credit instruments.

Sudden drops in real estate prices caused a jump in debt problems and non-performing loans.

I Was Quite Surprised By Some Things On My American Airlines International 'Economy Class' Flight

$

American Airlines wing

Everyone's always complaining about how horrible flying is--especially "economy class" flying.

And compared to other ways that one can spend one's time, flying is indeed often unpleasant and aggravating. Absent a need to get somewhere else, it's hard to imagine choosing to fly.

Among the common complaints about flying are lousy service, cramped seats, yucky food (if any), egregious add-on fees, frequent delays and cancellations, and a general impression that one is less a customer than a herd animal.

But!

If we airline customers have demonstrated anything over the past few decades it's that what we care about most is cost. Given the choice between paying more for better service, food, space, etc., or suffering and saving, today's flyers almost unanimously choose the latter.

So you can't blame airlines for cutting amenities. Especially when, even with these cuts, airlines still go bankrupt all the time--like American Airlines.

What's it really like to fly international "economy class" these days? And what's it like to fly on a bankrupt airline?

Yesterday, I flew American from Zurich to New York.

First and foremost: They got the important things right. The flight left on time, arrived 40 minutes early, and arrived safely. That's 99% of the "service" I was buying when I bought the ticket. And American delivered!

I'm not going to talk about the gum-chewing stewardess or the pee all over the plane's bathroom floor. Those things certainly did not enhance the flight. But I actually blame my fellow passengers for the latter.

I was flying in a 767, in Seat 29J--in the heart of cattle class. The plane was relatively full, and the flight was an interminable 9 hours.

The Zombie Websites Of Dead Retailers

Comp USA

Many big retailers have died since the rise of the web and e-commerce — either by being snatched up and killed off by their competition, or by failing to adapt and going bankrupt.

Even so, a lot of them don't disappear completely. The brands strive on in some form.

At the least, their domain names survive as the last remnant of once-great brands.

So what happens when you plug in the old domain names of these dead retailers?

Well, some of them really are dead, only living through a zombie domain that redirects you to the new owner's site.

Other brands, though, have been resurrected.

Hollywood Video, once the biggest rival of Blockbuster, perished when parent Movie Gallery went bust in 2010. But the brand is still alive in a totally new online form.

The brand has been reborn as an "entertainment news curator" at HollywoodVideo.com.

KB Toys went bankrupt twice in five years and liquidated in 2008. Toys "R" Us snatched up the website and intellectual property.

Your Password Isn't Good Enough – Here's How To Fix It

$

How secure is my password

Today being Data Privacy Day and all, it's a perfect time to revisit that most basic element of internet security – the password.

Just because your password replaces an "E" with a "3" and ends in an exclamation point doesn't make you invincible.

Here are some pointers to see how secure your password is and then pick a newer, stronger password if needed.

First of all, make sure you're not using one of these passwords

An analysis of hacked Yahoo accounts reveals some interesting trends in commonly-chosen passwords, reports The Star.

"123456" is at the top of the list, followed by "qwerty,""welcome,""ninja," and abc123." If these sound like passwords of yours, it's time to make a change.

Make them long

Longer passwords are obviously harder to crack. Make sure you're consistently exceeding the minimum length requirement on passwords that you pick.

Here's an easy way to remember a complicated password

Lifehacker offers the following tip to make sure you're using a relatively complex password while having no problem remembering it.

"I always tell people to use a sentence. I drive a 1978 Volkswagen! = IDA78VW! or Living At Home Since 1972 Sux = L@HS72SX"

What It's Like To Hang Out At Disneyland's Super Exclusive, $10,000-A-Year Private Club

Disney Land Club 33

One of the most exclusive dining experiences in California isn't in a bar or nightclub — it's Club 33 at Disneyland.

Named after its location at 33 Royal Street in Disneyland's New Orleans Square, Club 33 serves a five-course tasting menu of French/New American food and is decorated with antiques chosen by Walt Disney and his wife. It's also the only Disneyland restaurant to serve alcohol.

Club 33, which officially opened in May 1967, was dreamed up by Disney as a venue for entertaining visiting dignitaries, celebrities, and politicians (though he sadly passed away five months before it was complete).

There are rumored to be only 500 members on the roster, with a staggering 800 people on the waiting list hoping to gain an invitation and the right to pay the $25,000 joining fee plus $10,000-a-year membership fees. The club gained media attention in May of last year when it sent invitations to 100 new members for the first time in over a decade.

Graphic designer Pete Hottelet visited the club last year, and shared some photos of his experience with us.

Graphic designer Pete Hottelet took his niece and nephew to Disneyland to celebrate Christmas. He sent Business Insider pictures of the experience.

The private door to gain entrance on 33 Royal Street is relatively inconspicuous.

13 Charts That Show How Completely Broken The US Immigration System Has Become

mexican immigrant rights

Immigration reform has been a testy issue in the United States for more than a century, and the most recent iteration of the question is extremely divisive.

Now, eight Senators have come together with a bipartisan proposal that seeks to solve the myriad of issues that come with unauthorized entry into the U.S.

Before we solve the problem, we've got to understand it.

These charts show crucial stats on the state of immigration in the U.S.

First we'll look at the current status of unauthorized immigrants.

Next we'll look at how the U.S. tries to control the border and the difficulties therein.

Finally, we'll look at how the convoluted path to legal immigration for high skilled workers failed, and what the problems are with he current system.

Unauthorized immigrants comprise a major portion of the U.S. civilian labor force.

Close to 25 percent of farm workers, 19 percent of maintenance workers and 17 percent of construction workers were unauthorized immigrants in 2008.

And in 2008, 8 percent of births in the U.S. were children with unauthorized immigrant parents. 24 percent were from immigrants of any legal status.

This Is What You Need To Do After Losing Your Job

$
0
0

business man

Whether you were laid off, fired or decided to leave a position on your own, losing your job is a stressful time and you need to know the next steps to take.

Aside from finding a new job, you need to understand unemployment laws in your state and the real reasons behind why you were terminated, if that is the case.

Furthermore, you need to be fully aware of severance or health benefits that you're eligible for.

To help ease you through this process, we compiled some tips from Wendi Lazar, an employment lawyer, and Allison Doyle, employment expert at About.com, to quickly get you back in the workforce.

Step 1: Listen closely when speaking to human resources.

"If they are telling you that you’re being fired for a reduction in force and there are 300 other people being fired, it’s very different than if it’s an individual for either performance reasons, or, even worse than that, if you’re fired for cause," Lazar told us. "The ramifications are very different.”

Step 2: Don't sign anything immediately.

You should never sign anything your employers ask you to when you're leaving a job.

Lazar said you need to speak to a lawyer first even if they appear to be simple severance forms.

Furthermore, ask HR to review your compensation forms so that you can carefully review any obligations or benefits you're entitled to.

Step 3: Consider speaking to a lawyer to find out why you were really let go.

If you're being fired, it may be difficult to look at the situation in an objective light, so a lawyer can really help you do this.

You need to know if you were fired for a legitimate reason or if it was wrongful termination and "make sure there are no discrimination issues," Lazar said.
