A Mortician Tells What It's Like To Work With Dead Bodies Every Day

$

0

arizona morgueA man who works in a mortuary led a Reddit thread to give a glimpse into what it's like to deal with issues of mortality on a daily basis.

From the strangest requests he's ever had to what happens during cremation and embalming  practices where the body is temporarily preserved for viewing purposes, here's the closest most of us will ever get to knowing what it's like to work in a morgue.

NOTE: Reddit uses anonymous sources, which we can't verify. We've slightly edited questions and answers for clarity.

Q: What is the strangest request that you've ever received for a funeral service?

A: We had a dead clown one time. This person was buried in full clown costume with makeup and all. The whole family was clowns. All the friends were clowns. And at the family's request, the funeral directors were clowns too. They supplied costumes and did our makeup. Family and friends had one tear drop painted on near the eye. Definitely my strangest.

They were all sad clowns with a tear.

Q: Any other funerals that stand out in your memory?

A: One time we had a person who did some acting and modeling in California. A hand model. The family came in early to set up pictures and things.

I showed them in, helped them get started then left them. I came back about 10 minutes later to check on them and just about every picture they put up was this person's hands from the various ads they did. There were some family photos, but most were a pair of hands.

Q: What is the most embarrassing thing you've done to a cadaver?

A: I had this guy to prep one time. He had an intubater ... this tube down his throat and was taped on his face. One piece of the tape was across his mustache. When I took the tape off, most of his mustache came with it. So I shaved it. The wife was super pissed. She threatened to sue unless we fixed it.

So what am I to do? I went to a costume shop and bought a pack of fake mustaches. We had a picture of him, but none of these mustaches worked. I picked the best possible match and put it on him. We then called her to come look. We were nervous. It was bad. So she comes in and absolutely loves it! I couldn't believe it. She then turned super sweet and hugged me.

Q: When you cremate someone, how often do the ashes from previous customers make it into the current customer's mix?

A: There is some co-mingling involved, although very minimal. It is unavoidable since you can't get every single grain out. As long as you sweep it properly after each person, it is very minimal.

Q: What exactly happens to the eyes during an embalming? Do you glue the lips of the dead person together?

A: The eyes usually start to flatten after death. Think of an old grape. They do, however, remain with the decedent. We don't remove them. You can use what is called an eye cap to put over the flattened eyeball to recreate the natural curvature of the eye. You can also inject tissue builder directly into the eyeball and fill it up. And sometimes, the embalming fluid will fill the eye to normal size.

Yes, the eyes and lips are glued together.

Q: Will there ever be a job you refuse to do?

A: I've seen pictures and have heard about people being embalmed and placed on a motorcycle, stood up in the corner, in a recliner ... This all seems ridiculous and disrespectful to me. Especially if the deceased did not request it. I say I would refuse to do this to someone, but who knows? I mean, if the family really wants it.

Q: Did you go into the business by your own choice?

A: Yes, I did. I was fascinated by the industry as a kid. When I was 12, there was a bad head on collision near my house and a man in a truck didn't make it. My family and I were standing around with all the other neighbors when the coroner arrived. He pronounced him deceased, then they took him out and put him on a stretcher and his head turned to the side looking straight at me. I remember being curious as to what happens to people when they die, as far as the physical body.

Q: Are women creeped out by your career choice?

A: Some are. I like to date other morticians or nurses. They seem to understand and are over the whole novelty of it.

Q: Would you be embalmed yourself? Or would you want to be cremated?

A: I'm ok with being embalmed and buried. I'm also ok with being cremated. I will let my family choose the method which best suits them at the time.

Q: What kind of person would make a good mortician?

A: It's funny. I was a waiter for many years in my younger days. I always say, if you can be a successful waiter, you can be a successful funeral director. They are similar in many ways. They both wait on families and provide what should be excellent customer service. The only difference is that one puts a pizza in the oven and the other puts a body in the oven.

The VC Firm That Funded Facebook Explains How To Hire

Greylock Partners has just about the best track record funding startups as anybody on the planet.

The firm funded LinkedIn in 2004 and Facebook in 2006. Other hits in the portfolio include Pandora, AirBnB, and Cloudera.

So yeah, those folks know what they're doing.

This make the firm's advice worth listening to.

For example – wouldn't it be cool to know how Greylock instructs startups in its portfolio how to hire?

Well…you're in luck.

Greylock Partner Dan Portillo put together a presentation titled "Owning Your Recruiting." We have a copy, and he's given us permission to share it with you.

He says, "Essentially we created this deck to teach founders and hiring managers how to be responsible for their own recruiting."

"The only way we can effectively support 50+ portfolio companies is to help them build phenomenal recruiting engines inside their company."

"We believe that companies that are proactively built are fundamentally better than those which are built passively through job postings and external recruiters."

18 Complicated Scientific Ideas Explained In Plain English

Numbers Math Quant Physics Pi

A few months ago, Randall Munroe of the webcomic xkcd published a description of the Saturn V rocket using only the 1000 most frequent words in English.

Under this restriction, the rocket was called "up-goer five," the command module was "people box," and the liquid hydrogen feed line was "thing that lets in cold wet air to burn."

The comic inspired Theo Anderson, a geneticist who supports accessible science education, to build a text editor that would force the user to write with only the 1000 most frequent words. He then invited scientists to describe what they do using the editor.

Geologists Anne Jefferson and Chris Rowan created the Tumblr"Ten Hundred Words of Science" to collect examples of scientific text rendered into up-goer five speak.

From the site, here are examples of up-goer simplified science from 18 different fields.

1. Olfactory biology

"I watch boy flies try to do it with girl flies to see if they really like to do it, or they like boys flies more.

"This happens when they can’t smell something the girl flies have that makes them want to do it with girl flies or something the boy flies have that makes them not want to do it with boy flies."

Jennifer Wang, research technician in a lab studying fruit fly olfactory behavior

2. Web development

"Computers are used to share pictures, words, and movies (usually of cats) with other computers.

"The computers need to show the cats on boxes with tiny lights in them, but don’t know how. People like me tell the computer many words so that it knows how to change the tiny lights to look like a cat.

"We try to make the lights change very fast so that you don’t have to wait for your cats. Some days the lights are all wrong, and we have to tell the computer more words to make them look like cats again."

Brandon Jones, Google Chrome GPU Team

3. Political economy

"I try to see if bad people with power let bad people in business do bad things for easy money. Also I try to see if this hurts good people and their money."

Warren Durrett, political economist

The State Of Tablets In Shopping [SLIDE DECK]

ipad miniRetailers can't afford to ignore tablets any longer. They're becoming an increasingly popular part of the shopping experience.

Fiona Swerdlow, the head of research at the National Retail Federation's digital division Shop.org, gave a presentation on tablets and shopper's habits at Business Insider's Social Commerce Summit 2013 in New York City today.

"One of the most challenging things for a retail exec is where do you start?" said Swerdlow. "I think they all do believe that tablet shopping is here to stay and has a lot of growth ahead."

With technology and the behavior of consumers constantly changing, retailers have to do a lot work to get things right.

"This is not something for the faint of heart," said Swerdlow.

Swerdlow's peek into the state of tablets in shopping looked at last year's holiday season, along with what's to come in 2013.

Retailers aren't naive. They know that tablets are here to stay.

But they don't know where to start.

10 'Star Wars' Characters Who Should Get Their Own Spinoff Film

Han Solo

Now that we know we'll be getting "Star Wars" spinoff films in addition to episodes VII, VIII, and IX, everyone wants to know which characters will appear on the big screen.

There have been rumors and reports that characters from Han Solo to Yoda will get their own feature, but until we hear from Lucasfilm, it's anyone's guess which characters will be getting their own film.

We're rounded up ten characters we'd like to see in theaters from the obvious to a few you may not be familiar with unless you know the extended "Star Wars" family.

And, no, you won't find Admiral Ackbar here. The character's great for a gag, but any film with him would be a trap.

Mace Windu

Sure Samuel L. Jackson has another Disney franchise on his hands right now with "The Avengers," and there's the slight issue about his character getting axed in "Star Wars—Episode III: Revenge of the Sith"; however, the actor's made it clear he wants in on the new installments, even if he has to come back as a hologram.

Chewbacca

Han's Wookie sidekick has a family back on his home planet of Kashyyk. And, in the books, Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader imprisoned most of the Wookies to help build the Death Star.

Han Solo

Though Disney has yet to confirm, EW reported Han will get his own movie.

Harrison Ford's a little old at 70 to reprise the role, but if the film was to follow a younger Solo in all of his smuggling glory alongside Chewy, then we could get a peek at his adventures before joining up with Luke and Leia.

There are plenty of reasons to be nervous about adding emerging markets exposure to your investment portfolio.  Many are worried that they haven't completely recovered from the global financial crisis.  Many are also concerned that countries like China are maturing and that the their era of high growth is ending.

However, the emerging market bulls' case continues to be robust with evidence that these regions offer tremendous investment opportunities.

US Funds Frank Holmes recently presented a monster slide deck that made a big bull case for gold and other commodities.  Much of his thesis was supported by growing demand from the emerging markets.

Holmes shows how these economies have evolved, where they stand today, and what their consumers are consuming.

We pulled the 13 most relevant charts from his 77-slide presentation.

THE ROAD TO 200 MILLION: Photos Of LinkedIn's Epic Journey (LNKD)

LinkedIn employees celebrate 200 million members at LinkedIn HQLinkedIn's milestone of 200 million members seems inevitable now. The professional-networking site is woven into our daily work lives, an indispensable source of connections, news, and insights.

But those millions were hard-won. It was an overnight success a decade in the making, and LinkedIn faced doubters and challenges—some self-inflicted—every step of the way.

It took LinkedIn almost a year and a half to get 500,000 members. In April 2004, the startup's tiny crew assembled in a room in Palo Alto, Calif., to celebrate the occasion with a photo.

Since then, LinkedIn employees have gathered to commemorate every milestone. At first, it was every million. Then the numbers started flying by—every 5 million new members, every 10 million.

By now, the ceremony has become a global affair, with photographs taken from Singapore to Stockholm, as well as the giant gathering at LinkedIn's fast-expanding headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.

LinkedIn shared an exclusive collection of historical photos from its archives with Business Insider. We also spoke to several longtime LinkedIn employees with long tenures at the company, including cofounder Allen Blue, about how traditions like these group photos shaped the company's culture.

This is the first known milestone photo taken. Notable in the picture: Early LinkedIn employee Matt Cohler, third from left, who went on to become a top executive at Facebook and then a partner at Benchmark Capital.

2005: LinkedIn employees celebrate 2 million members

LinkedIn started making money by charging for job listings. By the end of the year, membership would double to 4 million.

A Photo Tour Of The Ad Agencies That Are Actually Still On Madison Avenue

Madison Avenue used to be the hub for the world's big ad agencies.

No longer. While Mad Ave still houses plenty of ad agencies — a Google Maps search returns hundreds of results on the avenue — many of the most significant nameplates have long since departed. In downtown Manhattan, Soho and the Village were the grateful beneficiaries. More recently, Brooklyn has become home to trendy agencies such as Huge.

Powerhouses such as DDB and TBWA Worldwide still represent the "Mad Men" era on the avenue (the corporate HQ of Omnicom, their parent company, is still on Madison).

But most of the nameplates are smaller, lesser known agencies, not the giant global names that used to have their headquarters there.

We decided to take a walk down the street and snap pictures of the remaining shops on Madison Avenue.

Here we go!

Each year before Lent, millions of people descend on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to celebrate Carnival.

They don extravagant costumes, play music, and dance until they're exhausted. Samba schools train all year long to perfect their routines and perform in the Carnival parade inside the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí, built just for this occasion.

There are Carnival celebrations all over the world, but there's no doubt that the biggest and best celebration takes place in Rio de Janeiro.

The wild celebration began on Saturday and will end tomorrow, on Fat Tuesday.

More than 200 samba schools parade in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators inside the Sambadrome.

Each samba school competes to outdo the next, with extravagant floats, costumes, dance routines and music.

Each school can have six to eight floats and up to 4,000 revelers, who are usually people from the same Rio neighborhoods.

Barney's photo galleries still live on in the White House archives. The photos, along with the hilarious first-person photo captions, are extremely cute.

We've compiled some of the best Barney moments, complete with the captions, here.

These Were The 10 Most-Liked Facebook Brand Posts In January

$

dog walmart facebook

Brands are constantly scrambling to get fans to engage in their original content on Facebook. While major ad dollars can be thrown into social media campaigns, January's 10 most-liked posts from advertisers were cheap and simple.

This is particularly noteworthy because January was the month that advertisers pulled out all the big guns for their Super Bowl campaigns.

While none of the Super Bowl ad teasers made the top 10 list, a Walmart post of a passed out dog — which has little or nothing to do with its brand message — was Liked more than 150,000 times.

Research from Track Social, an analytics firm that monitors 10,000 brands for social media activity in real time, shows that sometimes it's the simplest posts that get the most Likes.

10. This BMW post doesn't try to pull any tricks. Simply featuring the BWM M3 DTM, this Facebook post got 125,274 Likes by the end of January.

9. Intel hit it big with a post that framed its laptop's cool technology with an incredibly visually stimulating backdrop. This got 131,179 Likes.

8. Tiffany & Co. knows that diamonds are a Facebook fan's best friend. This simple, pre-Valentine's Day post got 136,242 Likes by the end of January.

Tom Cruise Sells His East Village Condo For $3 Million

$

Tom Cruise East Village Condo

Tom Cruise is in contract to sell his condominium unit at the American Felt Building in the East Village for $3 million, a source familiar with the transaction told The Real Deal today.

The 41-unit building at 114 East 13th Street, between First and Second avenues, was constructed in 1984, when Cruise, fresh off his star-making turn in “Risky Business,” purchased the 2,200-square-foot apartment.

The two-bedroom unit features a state-of-the-art gym which could double as a third bedroom. Though the 12-story building is known for its loft-like ceilings, the ceilings in Cruise’s 10th-floor unit have been lowered to nine feet, thought it was unclear why.

Cruise signed the contract last week, the source said, and is in the market for a home with a garage to avoid the press and unwanted attention. In July, the 50-year-old actor reportedly began contacting New York City real estate agents, including Donna Senko of Sotheby’s International Realty, to find a secluded home in Westchester or Connecticut.

He and ex-wife Katie Holmes already own a small empire of real estate across the U.S., including a 10,286-square-foot Beverly Hills estate with a tennis court and an 8,100-square-foot brownstone at 42 West 12th Street in Manhattan. Holmes has been camping out at the Chelsea Mercantile at 252 Seventh Avenue during the divorce proceedings, although the source said she has lived at the Felt building apartment in the past.

Indeed, Cruise shared the residence with his trio of ex-wives — including Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman — and also lived there with former girlfriends Rebecca De Mornay (his Risky Business co-star) and Cher, who stayed in the apartment with her children, according to the source.

Named for its former occupant, a manufacturer that supplied felt for Steinway pianos, the American Felt Building is also home to author Brett Easton Ellis; Fabrizio Moretti, the drummer of rock band the Strokes; and the band’s manager, Ryan Gentles.

“The floor plans may seem small, but some creative engineering has turned the loft apartments into unique spaces tricked out with platforms, balconies, extra windows [and] interior walls,” a description of the building on Streeteasy.com said. “Truly, no two apartments are alike in this building.”

The apartment was not listed, nor were brokers involved in the private sale. The buyer was not immediately known.

Matthew Adam Properties manages the building. Ira Meister, the company’s founder and president, declined to comment.

A representative for Cruise could not immediately be reached.

RUTH REICHL: Anybody Who Believes Yelp Is An Idiot

$

Ruth Reichl

Ruth Reichl is one of the top names in the foodie community — and for good reason. The former editor-in-chief of the now-defunct Gourmet magazine, Reichl has since signed a three-book deal with Random House, worked at Gilt Taste, and become a producer for her book-turned-movie "Garlic and Sapphires."

Recently, Reichl had lunch at NYC's Barbuto with Alexandra Ilyashov of Fashion Week Daily to discuss her current projects, favorite restaurants, and what life was like at Condé Nast. The critic, writer, and editor was unsurprisingly opinionated about the food and publishing worlds in the interview.

Here are a few of her craziest quotes.

On Yelp:
"Anybody who believes Yelp is an idiot. Most people on Yelp have no idea what they’re talking about."

On Zagat:
"I’ve always hated Zagat. If I’m going to listen to someone else’s opinions on restaurants, I don’t care if I agree or not. I just want to know who they are. If you follow critics, you know whether they’re Francophiles, or if they like a lot of spice. I know what [Times critic] Pete Wells’s biases are. We mostly agree. He’s not a snob, which is rare among critics. He loves food and has been brave with his reviews."

On what her life was like at Condé Nast:
"A car, hair, and makeup every morning at your house if you wanted it…It’s not real life, in some important way. People gave each other lavish gifts. If somebody retired at Condé Nast in those days, your secretary would go buy a $500 gift. Some editors at Condé Nast have never been on the subway—they’d take a car to go two blocks!"

Fashion aficionados rejoice — the ultimate Marc Jacobs accessory is now available in the form of the designer's SoHo apartment in NYC.

According to The New York Post, the downtown condo will be available to rent for $37,500 a month beginning on March 1st.

The listing on Zillow states that the home is roughly 2,500-square feet with three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, and enormous windows looking out onto the NYC streets. The iconic 40 Mercer St. building was developed by Andre Balazs and architect Jean Nouvel, and has a garage, pool, gym, sauna, and 24-hour doorman.

It also comes fully furnished, so if you've ever wanted to live like the beloved fashion designer and Louis Vuitton creative director, now's your shot.

Here's the building on Mercer Street in NYC's SoHo neighborhood. Marc Jacobs' apartment is on the 6th floor.

A long corridor greets guests upon entry.

With floor-to-ceiling windows, the home faces South and West.
