The movie "Elf" may have come out over 15 years ago, but a GIF from the film is among one of most popular of 2019.
That's according to Google, who used data from its iOS keyboard extension to determine the most popular GIFs of the year, at least among iPhone users. The data comes from Tenor, a platform Google bought last year, which powers GIF searches on Google Images, Gboard, Twitter, iMessage, Facebook, WhatsApp, and more.
The list shows that cartoon GIFs are particularly popular, making up three of the top four spots. GIFs from older media clearly have staying power. Along with "Elf," Stitch, a character from the 2002 Disney movie "Lilo & Stitch," comes in at No. 1 and No. 3. Their popularity seems to depend on how well GIFs capture a particular emotion, rather than how recent they are.
Here are the most popular GIFs of 2019.
