The story of the Royal Clarence, the oldest hotel in England that was destroyed by fire

AEX CathedralLounge 01

The oldest hotel in England was almost entirely destroyed by a fire last week.

The Royal Clarence Hotel, which dates back to the 18th century, was the first place in England to take on the French term "hotel." Before this, places offering accommodation in the UK were referred to as "inns."

But now, the building could be gone forever. The hotel's interior was entirely destroyed by the blaze on Friday morning, and all that remains is its facade, which was also damaged by the fire.

The Royal Clarence has provided rooms for travellers for almost 250 years. It started as a meeting place for the British upper classes, and has seen famous names from Admiral Lord Nelson to Clark Gable walk through its doors.

Take a tour of the historic hotel below, and discover the legacy it leaves behind.

On Friday 28 October, a fire which started in a neighbouring art gallery hit the Royal Clarence Hotel in Exeter, destroying everything but part of the building's facade.

Before the fire, the hotel was one of the most prominent features on Exeter's Cathedral Yard.

It was founded in 1769, and is thought to be the oldest hotel in England.

The future of Volkswagen in America has arrived with the Atlas SUV

Volkswagen VW Atlas 2018

Late last week, Volkswagen unveiled the latest addition to their US lineup — a mid-size SUV called the Atlas. The Chattanooga, Tennessee-built crossover is the first major arrival in Volkswagen's SUV revolution that will see the venerable German brand completely transform its lineup over the next few years.

"This is the biggest and boldest Volkswagen we have ever built in the United States, delivering the distinctive design and craftsmanship we’re known for, now with room for seven," Volkswagen North America Region CEO Hinrich J. Woebcken said in a press statement. "The Atlas marks a brand new journey for Volkswagen to enter into the heart of the American market."

The new SUV will make its world debut at the 2016 LA auto show in Novembers and will go on sale in the Spring of 2017.

When it arrives, the 7-seat family hauler will join VW's compact Tiguan and mid-size Touareg SUVs already on sale today. Unfortunately, even in a market that craves SUVs, Volkswagen has failed to make any significant headway with consumers.

Even though Tiguan sales are up 36% this year in the US, VW has only managed sell 30,000 of the compact crossovers through the end of September and currently accounts for just 1.3% of the segment. In that same period, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Ford have each managed to sell more than 230,000 of their respective compact crossovers.

The news is even worse for VW with the Touareg which has seen just 3,200 examples of the SUVs rolls off dealer lots through the end of September. As a result, the Teutonic off-roader accounts for a measly 0.2% of the US mid-size SUV market — the same segment in which the Atlas will do battle.

Thus, the three-row SUV will serve as much need reinforcement for VW's ailing lineup as it attempts to beef up SUV sales and recover from the debacle left in the wake of the company's multi-billion dollar emissions cheating scandal.

Following, the arrival of Atlas next Spring, VW will roll out the second generation Tiguan crossover for the US market later in 2017.

Over the next few years, the Wolfsburg-based auto giant plans to have three more SUV models, in addition to the Atlas, Tiguan, and Touareg.

In addition, there are plans for a sub-compact crossover and a compact model that will both slot in below the next generation Tiguan in the model hierarchy.

To differentiate the two mid-size SUVs, Volkswagen is expected to push the Touareg upmarket by rebranding the SUV, with its strong Porsche DNA (Porsche is part of the VW Group), as a performance-oriented model. Above the Touareg — at the top of VW's SUV food chain — will be the production version of the T-Prime GTE Concept that was introduced earlier this year at the Beijing auto show

It's been 76 years since the Battle of Britain — here are 14 photos of the Nazi onslaught in the skies of England

Battle of Britain Nazi Germany Great Britain UK World War Two II

By mid-1940, Nazi Germany had swept over Western Europe, conquering France and holding territory from the English Channel north to Norway.

Late that summer, Hitler and the German Luftwaffe turned their attention to England, with the Nazi dictator aiming to use his air forces to soften up Great Britain for an eventual ground invasion — codenamed Operation Sea Lion.

In its way stood Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the recently formed RAF Fighter Command, which could field the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire, some of the best fighter aircraft in the world at the time.

The Battle of Britain raged in the skies above southern England from late June to October 1940. Nazi fighters and bombers raked the English countryside, cities, ports, and airfields with bullets and bombs over this period.

Hitler in Paris

On September 15, the RAF achieved a seminal victory, downing 56 Luftwaffe planes while losing 28.

Two days later, Hitler postponed Sea Lion "until further notice." He kept invasion forces at high readiness, but Sea Lion was finally scrapped in February 1942.

Even with the invasion looking less likely, Nazi Germany continued to launch attacks on England — some of which would claim thousands of lives in and around London in a night — carrying out the Blitz from late 1940 to mid-1941, when Hitler redeployed his air forces to participate in the invasion of Russia.

Here's the salary you have to earn to buy a home in 19 major US cities

In the market for a home? Mortgage site HSH.com has updated its estimate of how much annual income a household would need to buy a home in major metropolitan areas in the US, according to first-quarter 2016 data.

The site highlights a few differences from last quarter:

• The Denver metro area has made a significant price surge — more so than any other analyzed

• Seattle is more affordable than the Washington DC metro area for the first time in the site's years of analysis

The site looked at median home prices from the National Association of Realtors. It took into account interest rates for common 30-year fixed-rate mortgages and property taxes and insurance costs to figure out how much money it would take to pay a median-priced home's mortgage, taxes, and insurance in each city, and how much you'd have to earn to afford it.

HSH.com emphasizes that this is only the base cost of owning a home — maintenance and other incidentals aren't included in its calculations.

The site also calculated how it would change the salary needed to buy a home if a buyer were to put 10% down instead of the recommended 20%. No matter where you are, putting down less makes things more expensive — you can visit HSH.com to see both numbers.

Salaries are listed from lowest to highest needed, and are rounded to the nearest $500.

So here it is, the future of the MacBook Pro, and it's full of adapters.

The new MacBook Pros exclusively feature USB-C ports, which means your old USB accessories and peripherals wont plug into the new MacBook Pro without an adapter.

We're not particularly fond of adapters. They're "extra" bits to worry about, and add extra cost to connecting our old stuff, which cost no money to connect in the past.

It'll take some time until everyone eventually replaces their old accessories with new models that support USB-C. Until then, we've found a few that could ease the transition.

At this point, we all know 2016 is no typical election cycle. This fact is also evidenced by the lopsided endorsements of newspaper editorial boards across the country.

While Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has garnered the support of more than 200 editorial boards, her Republican rival Donald Trump has only received eight.

LibertariancandidateGaryJohnsonhassix, and independent conservative candidate Evan McMullin has one.

In 2012, by contrast, President Barack Obama received 99 endorsements from daily newspapers, and Republican Mitt Romney received 105. Editorial boards have historically favored Republicans.

This year, several newspapers have even cautioned voters against putting Trump in office, and one small paper in Ohio has encouraged its readers not to vote for Clinton.

There could still be more endorsements as Election Day nears, but here's what Trump has so far:

Halloween has an extensive history, dating back to Celtic rituals 2,000 years ago.

In the US, the holiday fuels an entire industry, with millions of Americans spending billions on Halloween costumes each year, according to the National Retail Foundation. Before the 1920s, Halloween costumes were more commonly handmade, and were simpler and more terrifying.

But over the course of American history, Halloween costumes have become more complex, interesting, and (in some cases) tawdry.

Take a look to see how Halloween costumes have changed over the course of the last century.

Amityville Horror Chloe

The INSIDER Summary:

• Many famous actors have started their careers by first starring in horror films.
• A-list actors and Oscar winners, including Paul Rudd, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jennifer Aniston, grace this list of 16 actors who have starred in horror movies.

For whatever reason, a lot of Hollywood actors get their start by starring in horror films. Maybe it's because films of this genre are generally low budget, don't rely on star power to sell tickets, and, if I'm being honest, aren't generally known for featuring the best acting performances. And since it is October, AKA the spookiest time of the year, now seems like the perfect time to take a look back at some great Halloween movies that starred actors before they were famous.

Now some of these films are bona fide classics of the genre; especially when it comes to those '80s monster slasher films that used to dominate the horror landscape. Others are more cult favorites that aren't as universally-known but still have significant followings. And the rest, I have to admit, you probably have never heard of (I know I haven't). But every single one of these movies helped propel some major stars along in their careers; many of whom have gone on to win Oscar gold. So if you'd like a bit of history to go along with your scares this Halloween movie season, check out these 16 horror films featuring stars before they made it big.

1. Leprechaun - Jennifer Aniston

One year before landing her Friends gig, Aniston played the lead in this campy cult favorite.

2. A Nightmare On Elm Street - Johnny Depp

It analyzed real-time content consumption across the internet, video, social, and mobile in the week leading up to Halloween (October 23-to-31) to determine which "Stranger Things" characters were generating the most engagement.

And what Amobee found supports the popular sentiment. Hindus around the world came together over the weekend to celebrate Diwali, otherwise known as the festival of lights.

Diwali is considered one of the most auspicious times of the year for Hindus, and it marks the beginning of a new year in the Hindu calendar.

Though Diwali itself is one day, the rituals typically last over a five-day period, during which people celebrate by gathering with friends and family, lighting candles and firecrackers, and creating festive decorations meant to invite Goddess Lakshmi – the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity – into their homes.

In addition to India, Diwali is also widely celebrated in countries like Britain, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

11 home batteries that rival Tesla's Powerwall 2.0 (tsla)

Tesla Solar Roof

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is looking to disrupt renewable energy.

Musk unveiled the new version of its at-home battery, Powerwall 2.0, on Friday night. The battery comes with technical and design improvements from its predecessor, but it also speaks to Tesla's larger vision for energy. Musk wants to bring solar installation and battery installation, two processes that inherently rely on each other, together as one simple, integrated process.

Part of that vision involves Tesla merging with SolarCity, a controversial deal worth $2.6 billion, which shareholders will vote on November 17.

At-home batteries can store electricity generated by solar panels and draw electricity from the utility grid when rates are low to store for later use. They also provide homeowners with backup power in the event of an outage.

But Tesla isn't the only company offering an at-home battery solution.

Here's a closer look at Tesla's Powerwall 2.0 and its competition.

SEE ALSO: Tesla just unveiled its new at-home battery — here's what you need to know

1. Tesla's Powerwall 2.0 is a 269-pound lithium ion battery that you can mount on your wall. Panasonic makes the cells for the battery, while Tesla builds the battery module and pack. The whole thing costs $5,500, including the inverter, and stores 13.5 kWh of energy.

For reference, the average person uses 30 kWh of power a day.

The Powerwall is modular, so you can link up to nine batteries side-by-side to store more energy. Tesla estimates it will cost $1,000 to install the Powerwall, with installations beginning January 2017.

2. The LG Chem RESU battery is probably Tesla's closest competitor in the space. LG Chem announced just last week it would bring its battery option to the US through a partnership with rooftop solar company Sunrun. That would make the RESU available to Sunrun customers and its products distribution arm — a similar strategy to making the Powerwall available to SolarCity customers.

You can read more about LG Chem's Sunrun partnership here.

17 movies to watch on Netflix when you hate everything

Screen Shot 2016 09 15 at 11.02.18 AM

No matter how peppy you are or how much you love life, there are days when you are just over everything.

I'm not talking about your average bad day, or days when you have a serious case of the blues. I'm talking about those days when you're so done that you start channeling Michel from Gilmore Girls. Those days are when the thought of interacting with another person sounds as plausible as Santa Claus falling out of your chimney with a plane ticket to Hawaii in his big red sack. When you're feeling like this and are simply over all the things, Netflix has your back.

When you are indulging your inner misanthrope, you don't want to watch any feel good movies that are trying to make you feel better about humanity. You can watch those the next day when the dunzo blahs have left you to return to your normal sunny self. When you are over your work drama, waiting in line at the grocery store, and the way too noisy neighbor next door, you need movies that revel in the bad behavior you are way too civilized to condone in real life. You need teens who don't care what anyone thinks and absurd humor that highlights the silliness of it all.

You need these 17 movies on Netflix for when you are just over everything.

19 photos that show why Kyoto and Tokyo were voted the best cities in the world

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest in Kyoto Japan

Last week, Conde Nast Traveler announced its annual Reader's Choice Awards.

Over 300,000 readers voted for what they believed to be the best city in the world, not including those in the US.

Of all the cities in the world, the top two were in the same country — Japan. Kyoto bagged second place while Tokyo took top spot.

Despite sharing the same country (and the same letters in their names), Japan's ancient and current capitals are literally a tale of two cities, where tradition juxtaposes the ultra-modern.

The aptly nicknamed "city of a thousand years", Kyoto, was Japan's capital from 794 at the dawn of the Heian period until the Meiji restoration. Despite being the de facto seat of government since 1603, Tokyo was only made capital in 1868, when Japan's feudal shogunate system disintegrated and the Emperor was installed in the eastern city to restore his dominion over the empire.

Since then, Tokyo has exploded. It is now the most populous urban area in the world, according to the Demographia World Urban Areas— over 37 million people inhabit the Greater Tokyo Area. In 2014, The Brookings Institution estimated Tokyo's GDP at $1.6 trillion, the highest of any metropolitan area.

The result of this polarity is two cities that are each utterly mesmerising and beautiful but in completely different ways. Scroll down to see why they were voted the best in the world.

Kyoto is located near the centre of Japan's main island of Honshu, in the Kansai region.
