Peyton Manning

In the NFL, lots of players sign big contracts. But unlike other sports, NFL deals are rarely guaranteed and few players see all of the money in those large deals.

But a select few have gone on to make big money in their careers, with 22 players having made at least $100 million.

The list of the 25 players with the most career earnings includes 19 active players, 15 quarterbacks, and 2 Mannings.

Using contract data obtained by Spotrac.com, here are the 25 highest-paid players in NFL history.

25. Dwight Freeney, DE — $97.6 million

Seasons: 15

Highest single-season earnings: $30.8 million (2007; includes $15 million signing bonus)

Championships: 1

Pro Bowls: 7

First-team All-Pro: 3

One thing to know: Prior to the 2007 season, Freeney signed a six-year, $72 million contract with the Colts and, in a rarity for the NFL, he made every penny of that deal.

24. Jared Allen, DE — $97.9 million

Seasons: 12

Highest single-season earnings: $20.9 million (2008; includes $15.5 million signing bonus)

Championships: 0

Pro Bowls: 5

First-team All-Pro: 4

One thing to know: Allen spent some of his earnings on at least one horse. We know this because when he announced his retirement in February, he rode off on a horse.

23. Champ Bailey, CB — $102.8 million

Seasons: 15

Highest single-season earnings: $16.5 million (2010; includes $3 million roster bonus)

Championships: 0

Pro Bowls: 12

First-team All-Pro: 3

One thing to know: Bailey's largest contract came after the 2003 season, when he signed a seven-year, $63 million deal.

45 ways to make more money in 2017

$

tour guide

Whether you need to boost your cash flow to pay bills, save more or simply improve your lifestyle, there are plenty of ways to make more money.

Some methods of saving are easy, while others require more effort.

But all have the potential of paying off if you want to boost your bottom line.

Try any of these 45 ideas to start making more money in 2017.

SEE ALSO: 8 ways to make your money work for you

DON'T MISS: Here's how much you need to earn to be in the top 1% of every US state

1. Ask Your Boss for a Raise

If you want to make more in 2017, start by asking for it. According to compensation data company PayScale, 75 percent of workers who negotiate their salaries get pay raises. However, less than half of workers have asked for raises, according to PayScale’s salary survey. So, if you’re not asking for more, you could be leaving money on the table.

To get a general idea of what you’re worth, check the going rate for your position at sites such as PayScale.com, Salary.com and Glassdoor.com. Then build your case for why you deserve higher pay based on your accomplishments and the value you’ve added to the company, according to PayScale’s salary negotiation guide.

2. Give Yourself a Raise

You can boost your paycheck on your own by keeping more of what you earn. Do this by adjusting your tax withholding if you typically get a large refund every year. A big refund indicates that you’re letting Uncle Sam hang on to too much of your money during the year.

Rather than wait until the spring to get your money, file a new Form W-4 with your employer to claim additional allowances and have less tax money withheld. IRS.gov has a withholding calculator that you can use to figure out how many allowances to claim. Considering that the average refund was $2,777 in 2016, you could be adding more than $230 back to your paycheck each month.

3. Refer Other Employees to Your Company

You might be able to score a bonus at work by referring potential employees for job openings at your company. About two-thirds of large employers have documented referral processes in place, according to iCIMS, which provides software for screening new hires.

“Check to see if your company has a bonus policy for referrals,” said Lisa Rowan, a writer at personal finance site The Penny Hoarder. “For example, at The Penny Hoarder, employees receive a $500 bonus upon referring job seekers who get hired.”

super duper burger review 1398

"Burgers shouldn't cost $3," the website for Super Duper Burgers proudly declares.

San Francisco's fast-food burger chain has garnered a cult following for its extra juicy, double-patty burgers that cost $8.50 with cheese. The company claims to source ingredients within miles of its restaurants.

Here's what it's like to eat at Super Duper Burgers, one of the the Bay Area's favorite fast food chains.

You've probably never heard of Super Duper Burgers, but San Franciscans named the regional fast-food chain its "Tastiest Cheap Eat" in a 2016 Reader's Choice awards.

Source: 7x7

"Cheap" is relative. On a rainy weekday afternoon, I stopped by one of the chain's 10 locations in the Bay Area to find out if its famous $8 burger meets the hype.

The menu is pretty straightforward. There's a burger (that comes in two different sizes), a chicken sandwich, a veggie burger, and fries served plain or topped with garlic and cheese.

rick walking dead

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead" mid-season finale.

"The Walking Dead" may be over, but we already have our first look at what's to come when the show returns in February.

AMC released the first teaser for the second half of the show's seventh season, and Rick and his gang are finally rallying together to take down Negan and the Saviors. There were a lot of quick flashes and moments in the teaser. We went through and broke down every moment.

Keep reading to see what's in store when the show returns February 12, 2017.

It looks like the Saviors will be back sooner than we thought to collect more goods from the Alexandrians.

Do Rick and the group even have more to offer?

It's pretty awesome to see the gang (or what's left of them) all back together and plotting to take down Negan.

It's something at least Richard will probably be excited about — neither Carol nor Morgan seemed psyched about gathering together to take out the Saviors.

Either this is Richard out on a supply run or he's probably going to welcome Rick and his crew into the Kingdom.

The 10 best retail companies to work for in 2017, according to employees

With traditionally lower wages and less than ample perks, the retail industry gets a bad rap as far as employers go.

In fact, Scott Dobroski, Glassdoor's community expert, says that Glassdoor was surprised to see so many retail companies make this year's Employees' Choice Awards list.

To find the companies with the most satisfied workers, Glassdoor scanned its massive database of company reviews and ratings from current and former employees.

Based on employees' reviews, companies received overall ratings on a scale of one to five, with five representing the most satisfied employees. Though Glassdoor's calculations extend beyond the thousandth to determine final rank order, ratings displayed are limited to one decimal space.

Based on Glassdoor's anonymous employee reviews, there are a few crucial things the most favorable retailers have been doing that makes them so beloved by their people.

"Employees love working at these companies, often citing great career opportunities, flexible work schedules, and competitive pay for this industry," Dobroski tells Business Insider.

Below are the 10 best retail companies to work for in 2017 and what employees say make them such a shining beacon for other retail companies:

Citi strategists published a brilliant '12 Charts of Christmas' looking forward to 2017

$

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Market analysts are starting to wrap up their year's work and turning their attention to what will happen in 2017.

Citi's FX team, looking at the technical trading positions of a range of assets, has a note out with a dozen predictions, with some summary statements that helpfully line up with the tune of the seasonal favourite song "The 12 Days of Christmas."

An edited version of the slide deck from analysts Tom Fitzpatrick, Shyam Devani, Dan Tobon, and Beimnet Abebe is below. It's republished with kind permission, and their key calls include:

  • The S&P will continue to rise;
  • Oil is heading above $US60;
  • US consumer price inflation will head "close to 3%";
  • US 10-year Treasury yields have the potential to bust out beyond 4%;
  • The US dollar will continue to strengthen;
  • The Euro will hit parity with the US dollar and potentially fall below that level, and,
  • The gold price will continue to fall.

It's a good summary of views on some major issues, delivered with some seasonal spirit and the odd gratuitous reference to technical trading terms such as channel bases. But anyone can read this and follow what they see flowing from the charts.

Here we go:

The pack kicks off with a classic bad Photoshop job encapsulating some of the key themes likely to dominate the year ahead. See if you can spot them all.

Here's a summary of the calls. Some disclaimers are highlighted. Now let's get on with it: Everybody sing together ...

The first chart of Christmas truly says to me — an even higher S&P we'll see

There is strong likelihood that the S&P 500 in 2016 posts only the third bullish outside year in the past 81 years. The other years are 1935 and 1982, after which we saw respective up years of 28% and 17%.

The 15 biggest questions we have after 'The Walking Dead' mid-season finale

$
0
0

rick and negan

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

"The Walking Dead" season seven mid-season finale wrapped up pretty nicely. Rick is done groveling at Negan's feet and is ready to fight back alongside Maggie, Michonne, and the men he has left at his side.

While we know the episodes ahead will focus on gathering together the remaining communities and convincing them to join in the collective attack against the Sanctuary, there are still a lot of questions that have been left unanswered.

Keep reading to see what questions we still have after episode eight of the season.

Who's the mystery person in the boots?

We saw someone watching Rick and Aaron after leaving the boat in the woods. After the episode, there was a brief end-credits scene which showed that the person followed them back to Alexandria to scope out the place. Is this the person who owned the boathouse or is it someone else?

There are a few guesses going around. Some believe it's Dwight or one of the Oceanside women going to check out Rick's encampment. Others are hoping it's our first look at another group of mysterious survivors from the comics called the Whisperers, but it seems a little too early to introduce them yet.

Another theory is that we may see someone from a long time ago like Morales who departed from Rick's group all the way back in season one. That seems like a bit of a long shot though. I'm willing to bet it's someone new who we haven't seen yet, which would give the show a fresh story free from the comics.

Will Eugene make bullets for the Saviors at the Sanctuary or will he head back to the location where he was making them with Rosita?

One way or another, he's clearly going to be making ammo.

Why did Aaron and Rick bring home the offensive stranger's note they found in the boathouse?

The note had a giant middle finger on it telling the recipient that even though they thought they won, they lost. Didn't they imagine the Saviors would find it? Was Aaron planning to hang it on his wall as a keepsake?

I'm guessing the most logical answer is that Aaron and Rick didn't expect to see the Saviors at Alexandria right away upon their return. Unless the two were planning to ask around to see if anyone recognized the handwriting (doubtful), it seemed a bit silly that Aaron was beaten up over a sign that shouldn't have been brought back to Alexandria in the first place.

Here are the 5 runners-up for Business Insider's 2016 Car of the Year

Ferrari 488GTB 2

It's time! Business Insider's Transportation team will announce our 2016 Car of the Year on Tuesday, with the big winner selected from our list of 15 finalists

This is the third year that we've named a Car of the Year. Previous winners were the Corvette Stingray in 2014 and the Volvo XC90 on 2015. With each installment of Car of the Year, we've expanded our lineup and deepened our process of choosing finalists, runners-up, and the winner.

These five vehicles are the 2016 runners-up. We were incredibly impressed by all of them.

Our assessments were based on a full year of testing dozens of cars, trucks, and SUVs. Senior Correspondent Matt DeBord, Transportation Reporter Benjamin Zhang, and Evening News Editor and West Coast car nut Bryan Logan then discussed the merits of the finalists over a multi-week period, with a knock-down-drag-out debate once the field of 15 finalists was narrowed to six.

Transportation Reporter Danielle Muoio and Senior Transportation Editor Cadie Thompson also contributed their thoughts on the cars we've experienced over the past year.

Our talented photographer, Hollis Johnson, and videographer, Justin Gmoser, also kicked in their opinions, as they visually captured these striking automobiles in all their glistening glory over the course of the year.

In truth, this year's debate was a bit less bare-knuckled than last year's, when we spent several days in heated conversation before we chose the Volvo XC90

We don't have extensively scientific criteria for selecting what we feel were the best cars on 2016 — we currently lack the testing facilities for anything like that. But we do consider each finalist in terms of three important questions: Was the vehicle compelling to drive? Did it stand apart from the competition? And did it involve a strong business case for the automaker that created it?

So here they are — the runners-up for Business Insider's 2016 Car of the Year:

These are the cars former 'Top Gear' host Jeremy Clarkson hated the most this year

Jeremy Clarkson

Former "Top Gear" host Jeremy Clarkson is one of Britain's most famous and controversial media personalities.

However, the TV host is also a veteran automotive journalist and reviewer with more than three decades worth of experience.

In August, Clarkson revealed the list of cars he hated driving the most this year, though his weekly Sunday Times column. The list of 10 cars consist mostly of models not available in the US. However, there were three cars featured on the list that are within reach of American consumers.

Clarkson, who is now the front man on Amazon Prime's "The Grand Tour", was dismissed from the BBC program he helped build into a global juggernaut in 2015 following a physical altercation with a producer.

Here's a closer look at the three cars on Clarkson's list that are available in the US.

BMW X1 xDrive25D

Clarkson complained that the new second generation BMW X1 compact crossover felt cheaply-made and lacked the feel of a real BMW.  In his review Clarkson wrote, "It has a BMW badge, but it doesn’t feel, sound or drive like any Beemer I’ve been in."

In addition, the veteran automotive journalist called his top-of-the-line diesel powered test car "lethargic on-road and useless off-road."

Clarkson gave the X1 two out of a possible five stars.

Nissan GT-R Track Edition

Even though the Nissan GT-R is one of the few cars to receive five out of five stars from Clarkson, his hatred of the stripped-down GT-R Track Edition runs as deep as his love for the standard model.

Clarkson complained that the zero-star Track Edition's twitchy handling and rock hard suspension makes the car way too difficult to drive.

"Drive over a manhole cover and you get some idea of what it might be like to be involved in a plane crash,"Clarkson wrote.

"The standard GT-R is a five-star car. It is one of the best cars in the world. And yet this track-day abomination gets no stars at all. Because it’s pretty much useless."

Infiniti QX30 (Q30)

The Q30, which will be sold in the US as the QX30, is Infiniti's entrant into the compact luxury crossover genre. In his review, Clarkson praised the Infiniti's exterior and interior styling. However, the ex-Top Gear host railed against the car's diesel engine — which he claims is way too noisy. It should be noted that Infiniti will not offer the diesel engine option in the US.

In addition, Clarkson found the ride to be unpredictable and its rear cabin to be too cramped.

The 13 biggest snubs of the 2017 Golden Globe nominations

Silicon Valley

With more TV shows and platforms than ever before, every awards show is bound to make some very difficult choices.

Naturally, each year there are a ton of deserving actors, writers, producers, and shows that end up without a nomination.

But the snubs for our favorites don't get any easier to digest each year, as evidenced by the 2017 Golden Globes nominations announced on Monday. The Globes are seen in many Hollywood circles as the precursor to the Emmys, so a nomination here can be very important.

This year, the comedy series category was tougher than ever. Awards favorites, including HBO's "Silicon Valley," went forgotten.

And while an awards show can't hit every TV actor or show that stood out in the year's pop culture, "SNL's" Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump impersonators, "The Walking Dead's" new murderous villain, and the show that makes you look at your mobile phone in a whole different way were upsetting absences.

Here's a look at the biggest TV snubs of the 2017 Golden Globes nominations:

The battle for Aleppo is almost over — here's what it looked like before the war

aleppo

It has been reported on Monday that the battle for Aleppo was nearing its end after over five years of bloody civil war.

Sky News cited the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, saying the rebels had retreated from the remaining six neighbourhoods, clearing the way for a government reclamation of the city.

Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and backed by Russian air support have been making steady gains in the city for several months, slowly pushing from the west into the opposition-held east.

Since the war broke out five years ago, 250,000 people have been trapped in the besieged city, thousands more have died, there are no more working hospitals, and airstrikes have left ancient mosques and homes under blankets of dust and rubble.

The city is a shell of its former self.

Looking at photos of the city before and after the war serves as a sobering reminder of the catastrophic consequences of the conflict.

This is Aleppo today. For the last five years, the Syrian city has been crumbling under conflict and intense shelling from Russian-backed government forces and rebels fighting against President Assad's regime.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been trapped in the besieged city. Hospitals and schools have been destroyed. In the east, rebel fighters are rapidly losing ground as government forces regain territory.

But life in Aleppo wasn't always this way. The city had spent centuries evolving into the country's largest industrial and commercial hub and is one of the oldest inhabited cities in human history. It was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1986.

Oceanwide Center will actually consist of two towers located at Mission and 1st Streets. The larger building is destined to become the city's second tallest, reaching 910 feet.

The buildings will be named, simply, First Street Tower and Mission Street Tower. The latter soars a modest 625 feet and will be home to the 171-room Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

Its developer, Oceanwide Holdings, is a Chinese real estate firm controlled by self-made billionaire Lu Zhiqiang. His $5.1 billion makes Zhiqiang the 21st richest person in China.

First Street Tower (the taller of the two) is an attention-grabber. Its unique crystalline structure should help it to stand out against its future neighbor, the 1,070-foot Salesforce Tower.

Designed by London-based Foster + Partners and local architect Jeff Heller of Heller Manus, the two high-rises will add 265 high-end residences, one million square of office space, 12,000 square feet of retail space, and four levels of underground parking to the city.

TSA gas mask bullets weapon airport security

Most travelers have a number of things to worry about during the holiday season.

For TSA agents at the country's airports, there's also a variety of things to worry about — knives, fake grenades, swords hidden in canes, knives hidden in guns, throwing stars, and all sorts of other contraband.

The TSA has taken to documenting some of the weapons and other prohibited items it encounters at security checkpoints, posting them on the agency's Instagram account, which has accumulated more than 500,000 followers and rave reviews.

"I knew it would be popular and I knew we’d have a never-ending source of content," Bob Burns, who runs the Instagram account, told The Washington Post. "But I didn’t know how popular we’d be."

Below, you can see a selection of strange weaponry or look-alike weaponry that the TSA has come across and put on its Instagram, which Rolling Stone recently ranked as the fourth-best account on the social-media site.

If you still have no clue, a Sai is a weapon used for striking, bludgeoning and punctures. Whatever it is you use them for, please know they must be packed in checked baggage. These were discovered in a carry-on bag at Boise (BOI)."
