EllenTraveling is not easy.

Seeing family and friends around the world is great, but the hours you spend on trains, planes, and automobiles to get there can be exhausting.

Through years of traveling experience, many of us have come up with our own strategies on how to stay comfortable and calm on business trips and vacations.

With this in mind, we decided to have the members of the Insider Picks team share their favorite products that help make travel a more pleasant experience.

Take a look below and see if there’s anything you might want to add to your carry-on before your next trip.

SEE ALSO: 8 pairs of sunglasses we wear all summer long

Breton Fischetti, senior director, commerce

1. I don't subscribe to the idea that people should dress in pajamas for a flight, which is why these Mott & Bow jeans are a real blessing for travelers. Their dynamic stretch fabric has plenty of movement, so you can look put together but still fly comfortably. These are the only pants I will wear on planes now, and if you'd like to hear more about them, I did a full review here. (Mott & Bow Staple Jeans, $128)

2. I used to think that ear buds were perfectly fine for watching movies or listening to music on planes, but I was absolutely wrong. Having a good pair of over ear headphones will make a huge difference in your comfort. They are able to block out more cabin noise (babies) and any other distractions like that never ending hum of planes that affects my ability to fall and stay asleep. This pair of headphones has been my go-to since we featured them a few months ago — they're well priced and sit comfortably on my head for hours with no need to adjust. (MUZIK One Connect Smarter Headphone, $249.99)

3. I've written about this bag at length, so I'm just going to quote my previous story on the Black hole Duffel here. "This bag can handle anything short of a hurricane without your stuff getting wet, and fits a shocking amount, while still maintaining the size of a slightly-larger-than-average backpack. That means on crowded subways, buses, trains, or streets, your movement isn't affected by your stuff; instead, the bag keeps a low profile. I've also never been asked to gate check it on a crowded plane because it looks so small. Airline employees are trained to look at roller bags as targets when overhead compartments get full, but this one barely registers and fits into every overhead compartment I've encountered." (Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag, $129)

4. Everyone should carry a portable charger when traveling — it's just a good idea so you don't get stuck without a phone wherever you are. We've written at length about Anker's great products, and I like this charger because it's powerful enough to charge my phone once or twice while being small enough to fit in my pocket. (Anker PowerCore Slim 5000 Portable Charger, $29.99)

5. The first thing I want to do after I get off of a flight is wash my face. It makes a huge difference in my mood for the rest of the day, which is especially important if I have something important to do shortly after I land. I am a big enough fan of Kiehl's energizing face wash that I just leave it in my bag so I never forget it. (Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash, $22)

Ellen Hoffman, commerce editor

1. Who hasn’t scrambled to charge their phone before a long flight? Now there’s help for busy travelers. Away's carry-on has a built-in battery that can charge your devices, so you’re never left looking for an outlet at the airport. Plus, this one has two USB ports, so you can help out a friend if you're traveling together. It's the carry-on I always take with me on trips. (Away Carry-On, $225)

2.I own a handful of Bluetooth speakers, but this one from Anker is the one I use the most. While a speaker might seem like a superfluous thing to bring on a trip, it was actually one of the most versatile gadgets I packed. I used it to help me sleep (see my next pick for more on that), liven up my showers (because it's also waterproof!), and for some entertainment when I'm relaxing in my Airbnb or hotel room at night. It's well-constructed and sounds excellent, which are the two most important considerations when picking a speaker. (Anker SoundCore Sport XL Bluetooth Speaker, $59.99)

3.It may sound hyperbolic to say this white noise app has changed my life, but it has. I've been using Noisli every night for about two years now, and I wouldn't go anywhere without it. Thankfully, I never have to since I can access it from any of my iOS devices. Right before I'm ready to go to bed, I pair Noisli via Bluetooth my portable speaker when I'm away. I primarily use it to help me sleep, but you can also use it to help you to focus while working or relax while reading. It proved particularly helpful during the London leg of my trip; my first-floor Airbnb was located on a busy street and Noisli helped drown out the traffic outside. (Noisli App for iOS or Android, $1.99)

4.This is the one thing I wish I packed for my last trip. Selfie sticks look silly, but they serve a practical purpose on vacations. I get it now. This one from Fugetek can handle smartphones, GoPros, and digital cameras, and extends out over four feet — way further than your arm. Reviews of it are very positive for the most part, with most people praising its durability and the fact that accessories, like a carrying case, are included. (Fugetek Bluetooth Selfie Stick, $19.95)

5.Dagne Dover's large Landon Carryall is a practical and stylish companion for long weekend trips, or for going from the office to the gym after work. It has a padded laptop sleeve; a water bottle holder; a key leash; two interior mesh pockets that are great for storing a book, charging cables, or portable batteries; and another large interior pocket for whatever other odds and ends you want to pack. There's even a separate mesh pouch for toiletries and a shoe duster for your footwear you don't want making contact with your clothes. Dagne Dover also put a pocket on the back of the bag, so you can keep your keys, phone, or passport tucked away and secure, but still readily accessible in a pinch. For further convenience, the bag unsnaps at the sides to create more room for the extra pair of heels you swear you're going to wear. (Dagne Dover Large Landon Carryall, $185)

Tyler Lauletta, commerce reporter

1. The Bluesmart Black Edition is the best carry-on bag I’ve ever used. It looks great, is full of smart features, has plenty of space for your clothes and travel necessities, and fits perfectly into any overhead compartment. It’s a sizable investment, but if you travel regularly for work or pleasure, I can’t recommend the Bluesmart Black Edition enough.  (Bluesmart Black Edition, $599)

2. When you’re on a cross-country flight, it’s important that you stay as comfortable as you can, especially for the majority of us who are crammed into coach seats. Flint and Tinder's 10 Year Hoodie is one of my most reliable pieces of leisurewear, while still looking sharp enough to wear in public. It’s my favorite piece of clothing to nap in, which is perfect for catching some sleep mid-flight. (Flint & Tinder 10 Year Hoodie, $89)

3. One thing that I’m always paranoid about while traveling is keeping my laptop safe. If turbulence hits, or another passenger trips over your bag in the airport, you want to know that your most important possessions are secure. Incase's laptop sleeve has kept my computer safe from dings and dents, and fits perfectly into my backpack. (Incase Slim Sleeve for MacBook Pro, $49.95)

4. Slip-on shoes are essential for anyone looking to get through TSA security as quickly as possible. My Jack Erwin Cooper boat shoes are comfortable and make it easy to get to my gate without a hassle. (Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoe, $125)

5. A great backpack for travelers who refuse to check bags. Arcido's Faroe backpack has s spacious main compartment with enough room for a long weekend's worth of clothes. Its secure laptop pocket also allows you to keep everything you need all in one place. (Arcido Faroe Backpack, $99)

WINNING 'BACHELORETTE' COUPLES: Where are they now?

jojo fletcher jordan rodgersIt's hard to believe, but "The Bachelorette" has been on the air since 2003.

ABC's hit reality series wrapped up season 12 when JoJo Fletcher said "yes" to the proposal of Jordan Rodgers, a former pro football player and brother of Greenbay Packers quarterback Aaron.

But when "The Bachelorette" launched in 2003, no one knew it was going to last so long. After failing to get a big audience, the show went off the air in 2005 before it came back to TV in 2008, revamped and ready for drama.

Today, it's now one of ABC's best performers and responsible for producing (and populating) multiple spinoffs, including "Bachelor in Paradise." But after 12 seasons, what has become of the many bachelorettes?

Shocker: The majority aren't with the winner they fell in love with over the course of a short few months.

SEASON 1: "Bachelor" runner-up (and first "Bachelorette" ever) Trista Rehn chose firefighter Ryan Sutter as her final pick.

Rehn and Sutter are still together and perhaps the most successful of any "Bachelor" or "Bachelorette" couples in history.

The pair got married in an ABC special broadcast on December 6, 2003. They now have two children.

SEASON 2: Makeup artist and former catalogue model Meredith Phillips and equities researcher Ian McKee broke up one year after the finale aired.

greek yogurt with berriesThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Your diet can impact how well you sleep.
  • Sleep specialist Dr. Michael Breus told INSIDER which foods and drinks can help promote better sleep.
  • Examples include beef, salmon, walnuts, tart cherries, and lavender tea.

From having a bubble bath to going to bed naked, there are a number of things you can do to get a better night's sleep.

Even your diet can have an impact on how well you sleep.

INSIDER spoke to Dr. Michael Breus, a sleep specialist and author of "The Sleep Doctor's Diet Plan: Lose Weight Through Better Sleep," to find out what we should be eating (and drinking) to get a better night's rest.

Here are 23 foods and drinks that he recommends.

Beef

Beef is high in tryptophan, an acid "that is involved in the process of making melatonin naturally," Breus told INSIDER. Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate your sleep.

Beef also contains vitamin B3 and iron, which help alleviate restlessness, according to the sleep doctor.

Tuna

Fish like tuna is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which has been found to be helpful in regulating the sleep cycle.

Salmon

Salmon is also loaded with Omega-3, making it an ideal dish for dinner if you want to get a good night's rest.

The Times Square driver was reportedly high on synthetic marijuana — here's what it is

times square car

A driver who crashed his car into pedestrians on the sidewalk in New York City's Times Square on Thursday morning tested positive for synthetic marijuana, multiple outlets are reporting.

Richard Rojas, 26, lost control of his vehicle just before noon on Thursday. His vehicle hopped the curb, killing one, 18-year-old Alyssa Elsman, and injuring 22, the New York City Police Department confirmed.

Rojas reportedly tested positive for synthetic marijuana, otherwise known as spice or K2, after he was brought into police custody.

NYPD officials declined to confirm the report to Business Insider, and would only say their "investigation is ongoing."

Rojas, a Bronx resident and Navy veteran, was previously arrested for a DUI in 2008 and 2015, reports Pix11. He was also reportedly charged with menacing earlier this month.

Synthetic marijuana is a lab-produced, mind-altering drug that's been soaring in popularity in recent years. It's illegal to purchase and consume in New York state.

Giant underground laboratories, many of which are in China, are churning out thousands of pounds of the stuff. This week, the DEA arrested a man whose lab likely produced the chemicals in some 70% of the spice sold in the US, the New York Times reports.

Although it's often marketed as a "safer alternative to traditional marijuana," spice is dangerous — it's been reported to cause seizures, psychosis, and vomiting, among other side effects.

Here's what you need to know about synthetic marijuana:

SEE ALSO: Driver crashes car into pedestrians in New York City's Times Square

This is spice. It looks fairly harmless — like herbs in a shiny package — but it isn't.

Reports suggest that since 2009, drugs like spice, or synthetic marijuana, have killed roughly 1,000 Americans — many of them young people in high school.

The drugmakers change up the specific ingredients in the drugs so fast — and produce them in such massive quantities — that drug enforcement can't keep up.

7 charts explain Snap's disastrous first-ever earnings report

$

Snapchat Spectacles

Snap made its first-ever earnings report as a publicly traded company last week, and investors were not happy with the first-quarter results. The company missed top-line expectations, and its daily active user count didn't grow as much as expected.

While disappointing, the earnings report gave investors yet another glimpse inside the company that many are still learning about. Here's a breakdown of Snap's first quarter in seven charts.

More important than even revenue growth right now for Snap is Snapchat's daily active user (DAU) growth. The company saw a stark slowdown in growth over the second half of 2016, and that trend continued into the first quarter this year. DAUs increased just 8 million, concentrated in North America and Europe. Snapchat has added just 1 million users in the rest of the world over the past two quarters. Analysts were expecting Snapchat to add 9 million to 10 million new users.

Daily users still grew 36% year over year, but that's slowing significantly from last year. It did, notably, reaccelerate sequentially from the fourth quarter, when the company added just 5 million users. With a tough comparable quarter coming up, user growth should slow even further in Snap's next report.

Without robust user growth, ad revenue slowed sequentially from the fourth quarter. While there's certainly some seasonality in the advertising business, Snapchat's in the relative early stages of monetization, and such a significant sequential decline is somewhat surprising.

Comparatively, Facebook's revenue declined just 9% from the fourth quarter even while it faces ad load saturation. And while Snap's daily user growth is slowing, it still increased at a slightly faster rate than Facebook on a sequential basis.

Combining revenue and daily users into one metric gives us average revenue per user (ARPU). It's no surprise that North America continues to outpace Europe and the rest-of-world segment by a wide margin. While Snap managed to increase rest-of-world ARPU sequentially, it decreased in Europe. The two regions are now getting much closer in monetization, which is surprising.

Drawing on the Facebook comparison again, the social-network giant generates more than 2.5 times as much revenue per user in Europe as in Asia-Pacific and more 4 times as much as in the rest-of-world region. While the regions aren't identical, it shows Snapchat is very under-monetized in Europe.

chrissy teigen lunaThe INSIDER Summary:

  • For some of our favorite celebs, being a parent is the biggest role they've undertaken.
  • From Blake Lively to Chrissy Teigen, these are the takes on what parenting is like for a star.

Sure, celebs have enough income to afford 24/7 child care and super posh nurseries, but at the end of the day, famous parents are held to the same unrealistic parenting standards as everyone else. From realizing the overwhelming depths of unconditional love to quoting their kids’ critical reaction to their personal appearance, here are some of the best celebrity takes on what it’s really like to be a parent.

She’s gorgeous, has an awesome job, threw the coolest birthday party for her son, and tracks it all in an enviable Instagram feed, but that doesn’t make Wilde perfect — and she let everyone know in one honest tweet: “Anyone else suck at parenting today?”

Blake Lively

As part of a Hollywood power couple who are fiercely protective of their brood’s overexposure to the flash bulbs of prying paparazzi, Lively opened up about her mama-bear instincts when talking about her priorities. “My family: That’s the thing that I feel most protective of and the thing that I feel is the most exposed when I feel exploited.”

3. Ryan Reynolds

If anyone wondered if Reynolds was going to lose any of his sarcasm after he became a father, ponder no more. It’s only gotten sharper with the new inspiration of his children. When asked what it was like to be a father after his and Blake Lively’s first child was born, Reynolds answered, “She has me so far wrapped around her finger, it’s dumb. She says ‘Dada,’ and I will walk through a cement wall to get to her. It’s crazy.”

Here's how much the 'Game of Thrones' characters have changed since the first season

Daenerys Targaryen and baby dragon Game of Thrones

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones."

In 2011, "Game of Thrones" premiered on HBO and quickly captured the world's attention with its epic battles, conniving characters, and of course — dragons. Though many characters have been killed off over the years, our remaining favorites have changed dramatically.

As we gear up for a new season, let's take a look back to see where some of the characters began their journey in season one.

Keep scrolling to see how much your favorite "Game of Thrones" characters have changed.

SEE ALSO: All the 'Game of Thrones' deaths, ranked from least tragic to most tragic

At the start of the series, Jon Snow was living in Winterfell as the bastard son of Eddard Stark — denied the respect and privileges that come with being a legitimate heir.

He volunteered to "take the black" and join the Brothers of the Night's Watch after Eddard Stark was named the Hand of the King.

Jon rose through the ranks of the Night's Watch and became Lord Commander. Now (after a quick stint as a dead man) he's reclaimed Winterfell and was named King in the North.

Jon was also revealed to be the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, which gives him royal blood. Now we need to wait and see what this means for his future as a possible ruler of the seven kingdoms.

When we first met her, Sansa Stark — the eldest daughter of Eddard and Catelyn Stark — adored love stories and longed for the excitement of the capital.

Unfortunately, Westeros had many horrors in store for Sansa, including witnessing her father's death and being forced into three extremely unhappy (to say the least) marriages.

13 sneaky costs of college — and how to keep them under control

$

worried college grad

When families think of financing a college education, they usually think about covering tuition costs.

It’s easy to home in on tuition — after all, it’s an obvious, in-your-face expense. But tuition and fees don’t make up the largest portion of the average cost of college attendance.

In the College Board’s most recent Trends in College Pricing, researchers found non-tuition-related expenses at public four-year schools account for 61% of a total $24,610 average cost of attendance.

Here are a few hidden college costs for families to consider before the school year starts.

SEE ALSO: Only 12% of students actually pay the full sticker price at their private college

DON'T MISS: These 20 colleges give you the biggest bang for your buck

1. Parking fees

If you plan to commute or keep a vehicle on campus, set aside money for parking ahead of time. Schools typically offer a range of parking packages for students. For example, student parking permits at Boston University go for as low as $266.40 per school year for evening commuters, to $1,905.50 for those who live on campus and need to park overnight.

You may be required to pay a lump sum for parking at the beginning of each semester. Check if your school prices parking passes by location. If they do, research on-campus transit. You may be able to pay for cheaper parking farther from your classes, then hop on campus transit to class. Consider cheaper parking options like city parking lots or curbside options if there are any nearby.

2. Study abroad and other travel

College years are prime time for travel. Whether you’re hitting the beach with friends on spring break or considering an extended study abroad program, you could easily spend thousands of dollars on travel over the course of four years.

Study abroad programs, complete with room, board, instruction, and sometimes internships, can get pricey. For example, Northwestern University estimates a year studying abroad in Brazil to costs about $21,000 for students, while a summer abroad in the University of Georgia’s UGA en Buenos Aires program costs $4,294, plus about $3,000 in tuition and fees.

Often, students finance study abroad trips with financial aid. Just think it through before you take on more debt, especially if you’ve taken on a lot of student debt already. Many school study abroad offices offer scholarships for students. Another good source is Cappex.com, which tracks college scholarships.

3. Food

The average college and university charges about $4,500, or $18.75 per day, for a three-meal-a-day dining contract for a typical 8- or 9-month academic year, according to the Hechinger Report, an independent, nonprofit education news site.

If you want to use the meal plan but the standard campus meal plan is too expensive or wasteful for your budget, you could find savings in a lower-cost plan. Many post-secondary institutions offer lower-cost meal plan packages. Schools may also require first-year students or those living on campus to sign up for a meal plan, but allow upperclassmen and commuters to decide to what extent — if at all — they want to participate.

For example, at New York University, a student can pay $2,800 per semester for an all-access meal plan (28 meals per week) or as little as $1,210 per semester for a so-called “flex” plan (5 meals per week).

7 signs your phone is dying and it's time to get a new one

$
0
0

cell phones, smartphones

Now more than ever, it feels like there's a new smartphone coming out every day. The last eight months alone have given us the iPhone 7Google Pixel, and Galaxy S8, among others.

Regardless, it's easy to hold off on an upgrade — especially considering that a brand new model may set you back as much as $1,000.

While you should definitely weigh your options, you should also watch out for symptoms that your phone is dying. An old phone with outdated software may be annoying, but it may also, more importantly, leave you vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Here are the signs you shouldn't ignore, as well as the best time to buy a new phone:

You can't download the latest operating system.

The most, and perhaps only, pressing reason to get a new smartphone is if you cannot download new software updates.

For security purposes, you should always update your phone to the latest operating system available. Updates often fix flaws in older systems that leave your phone and data vulnerable to hackers and cyberattacks.

If you currently use an iPhone or Android device, you should update to iOS 10.3.2 and Android Nougat 7.1.2, respectively. Microsoft also released a new update for Windows 10 in April for a select few devices.

Your battery dies halfway through the day, even on a full charge.

Product defects aside, your smartphone battery should last you through a day of typical usage.

If you're noticing, however, that your phone is dying more and more quickly after a full charge, it may be time to get a new one or replace its battery. If your phone randomly dies throughout the day, it's a sure sign your phone's battery is on its last legs.

Keep in mind smartphone batteries lose capacity every time you charge it from zero to 100%. And if you're charging your phone incorrectly, your battery may only work properly for a year or less.

You don't have enough storage space to save, well, anything on your phone.

There's a reason that most smartphones now come with at least 32GB of storage: The more sophisticated phones and apps get, the more storage they typically require. New operating systems and software updates can also take up a significant chunk of space on your phone.

Basically, you can't do much with 16GB (or fewer) of storage anymore, unless you never update your phone (again, don't take this risk), download apps, take pictures, or use other new features. But at that point, you might as well abandon smartphones altogether.

Obama Top Pot Doughnuts Seattle

If you ask a Seattle local, you can forget about Krispy Kreme or Dunkin' Donuts — it's all about Top Pot Doughnuts, a local chain that has become an institution since it first opened in 2002.

How famous is Top Pot? Famous enough that President Barack Obama himself stopped in during a visit to Seattle in 2010. "You can't eat these every day," he quipped.

And how delicious is Top Pot? Delicious enough that, also back in 2010, Golden Tate — then a rookie with the Seattle Seahawks— walked into a closed Top Pot store at 3 a.m. because he was craving its maple bars (his apartment was located in the same building). It's especially funny because Top Pot was named the official doughnut of the Seahawks just a few months prior.

In other words, Top Pot is serious business. At peak hours, it has lines coming out the door. So when we were in Seattle last week, we had to stop by and check out Top Pot Doughnuts for ourselves.

It was incredible. Take a look:

The 21 Top Pot locations can be found mostly in and around Seattle (with a few in Texas). This is the flagship location, not too far from Amazon's headquarters in downtown Seattle.

Top Pot was founded in 2002 by brothers Mark and Michael Klebeck. Here's the story of how the chain got its name, from its website:

"Years earlier, two of our co-founders spied a vintage rustic (and rusty) neon sign gleaming above a boarded-up Chinese restaurant called 'Topspot'. They bought the sign, and then left it idle in a backyard for four years, further rusting and creating a home for raccoons. Then, when the sign was finally driven off to be restored, the center 'S' fell off, leaving the words 'Top Pot' behind."

The store has a vibe like an upscale Starbucks. But that's not what we're here for. Enhance.

Oh yeah. That's the stuff. Top Pot specializes in perfecting old classics — it's less about crazy toppings and weird flavor combinations and more about making the best darn apple fritters, old fashioned, and cake donuts possible.

16 US federal officials have been impeached in history — here are the craziest reasons why

$

Andrew Johnson

With lawmakers discussing impeachment more freely lately, it's worth pointing out that only a small handful of federal officials have ever been impeached by the House.

In US history, just 16 federal officials — one senator, one cabinet secretary, two presidents, and 12 judges — were impeached.

Of those impeachments, just five have occurred in the past 80 years.

President Richard Nixon, the only president to resign from office, was actually never impeached. He stepped down before proceedings had begun. The two presidents who were impeached by the House, Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson, were both acquitted by the Senate. No president has ever been both impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate.

Many of those 16 impeachments occurred for interesting reasons.

Here are some of those:

William Blount

The first federal official to be subject to impeachment was Blount, a Tennessee senator, in 1797.

Blount was accused of conspiring to allow Britain to gain control of Florida and Louisiana in exchange for American access to the Mississippi River and New Orleans. A letter outlining the plan was turned over President John Adams, who came to the conclusion that what Blount was trying to pull off amounted to a crime.

The House shortly after voted to hold impeachment hearings, but the Senate, taking responsibility for one of their own, took control of the matter and voted to essentially expel him from the governing body.

John Pickering

Pickering, a district judge in New Hampshire, was impeached in 1803 and convicted by the Senate in 1804 for, among other things, being drunk.

President Thomas Jefferson accused Pickering of having bad morals because he was drunk while on the bench. Jefferson also accused the district judge of making unlawful rulings, but Pickering's drunkenness is what he's more remembered for.

"I shall be sober tomorrow," Pickering said at the start of a November 1802 hearing, according to Politico. "I am now damned drunk."

West Hughes Humphreys

West Hughes Humphreys was impeached for something that no federal official could find themselves subjected to in modern times: serving simultaneously as a US district court judge in Tennessee and as a Confederate judge in the same state at the beginning of the Civil War.

Impeached in 1862, Humphreys was subsequently convicted charges including calling for secession from the union, aiding an armed rebellion, and serving as a Confederate judge, among others.

One charge he was not convicted on? Confiscating property belonging to President Abraham Lincoln-appointed Tennessee Military Governor Andrew Johnson, the future president.

Speaking of Johnson...

The doomsday vault that's supposed to store every known crop on the planet is in danger

If everything goes wrong — if because of disaster, climate change, or nuclear war, life as we know it comes to an end, with parts of the earth rendered inhospitable with widespread environmental devastation — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a resource that could come to our rescue.

Hidden about 400 feet inside a mountain on a remote island between mainland Norway and the North Pole, the vault stores valuable seeds from crops all over the world. It's supposed to be protected and stay at a safe temperature to store all those seeds.

But extreme temperatures in the Arctic this winter — combined with heavy rain instead of snow — led to melting permafrost that gushed into the tunnel leading into the vault, according to a report in The Guardian, raising questions about whether the doomsday vault will survive a warming planet.

Svalbard Global Seed Vault

"It was not in our plans to think that the permafrost would not be there and that it would experience extreme weather like that," Hege Njaa Aschim, an official in the Norweigan government, which controls the vault, told The Guardian. "A lot of water went into the start of the tunnel and then it froze to ice, so it was like a glacier when you went in."

The water didn't travel all the way down into the vault, which is still safe, and officials could chip all the ice out the entryway.

Here's what the vault looks like inside — and why administrators are worried about the potentially devastating effects of climate change.

Svalbard is the northernmost place in the world that still has scheduled flights, according to The Crop Trust, the group in charge of the global seed-bank system.

It's more than 400 feet above sea level, and there's little moisture in the air. But the Arctic is warming far faster than the rest of the world — faster than anyone expected.

The vault is buried in permafrost and is supposed to stay frozen for at least 200 years, even if the power were to go out. But officials are worried. "Now we are watching the seed vault 24 hours a day," Aschim told The Guardian.
