This cutting-edge drone port could be the future of the shopping mall as we know it

$

Drone portAs malls shutter across the country, one architecture firm has plans to salvage brick-and-mortar shopping centers by turning them into drone ports.

CallisonRTKL, a global architecture firm, was inspired by the Six Flags Mall in Arlington, Texas, which is going to be demolished after losing its key tenants.

There are tentative plans in place to transform the defunct mall into an industrial complex, but CallisonRTKL has something else in mind. The firm wants to transform the shell of the former mall into a delivery warehouse that's ideal for drone takeoff and delivery.

Here a preview of what that might look like:

The Droneport is a futuristic storage and delivery prototype that aims to provide inexpensive, same-day-delivery for companies like Amazon.

The innovative design features an underground warehouse, an unloading area for truck deliveries, a vertical elevator tower, and a drone dock ring where the drones are stored and loaded.

Goods are brought to the storage center by delivery trucks and stored in the underground warehouse.

10 signs you should marry your partner

$

weddingThe INSIDER Summary:

  • There are a lot of little signs that can tell you whether or not a person is 'the one.'
  • If your partner brings your coffee in bed, you want to hangout with them more than anyone else or if you can picture having with children with them then this person might be the one.

How do you know if you should marry your partner? It’s true that it is “just a feeling” to some extent. It’s really more about the kind of love you have and the kind of relationship you have with this person.

A lot of people will tell you that falling in love is hard, but if you’re with the right person, it actually isn’t hard at all. You slip into it rather than fall. It feels natural to you. This person is your best friend. He’s the person you call whenever you have good news or bad news or just want to talk. She’s your person.

And if your partner happens to do these 10 things, you should marry that person IMMEDIATELY!

1. If your partner brings you coffee in bed

There is nothing sweeter than a person who wakes you up with a fresh cup of coffee, just the way you like it. He’s saying, “I know you won’t move until you have this, and I care enough about you to make sure you DO move.”

It’s more than just coffee that makes the person marriage material, it’s her notion of the little things, of seeing to your happiness in any way she can. If your partner puts your needs above her own and goes out of her way to make you feel adored, marry that person.

2. If she knows when you’re upset even without asking.

A person who really loves you pays attention to the way you act when you’re pissed off or hurt. Your partner doesn’t want you to feel this way, so he knows the signs of the fire. Too many times we see a person we’re dating get upset and decide to “let him simmer” because we don’t have the energy to deal with it.

If you’re S.O. cares enough to cuddle you (or stay away, whichever is best for you) and asks you what’s wrong, you should marry him.

3. If you have meaningful sex.

There is nothing wrong with dirty, kinky sex, but if you can really make passionate love, that’s a person you should put a ring on. It’s about so much more than sex, you’re actually making your pair bonding connection stronger through intercourse.

When my partner and I are making love (like really making love), candles lit, really slowly, it’s like our souls are connected. I know it sounds cheesy, but it is awesome.

This company makes the perfect summer shoes, and you never have to break them in

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

download 2Summer usually means I spend 75% of my time knocking around the city in Chuck Taylor converse. They're easy to get, are completely ubiquitous and unoffensive to almost any outfit, and they mean I can transition from walking 40 blocks in the heat to happy hour drinks with friends easier than flats allow.

However, even given their long-held spot as my summer MVPs, the extremely comfortable and stylish Soludos smoking slippers might unseat them from that #1 pick.

My first interaction with them was surprise — though incredibly lightweight and breathable, they didn't feel flimsy. I'm sure by nature of their canvas-like construction that they'll show wear and tear, but for $75 that's not a lot to replace a pair of shoes I wear at least twice a week.

Speaking of breathability, I never really thought about how much I minded being stuck in hot cotton socks in 80 degree weather until I experienced that situation in heavy New York City humidity in my Soludos. Squinting into the sun trying to figure out after four hours of walking where to take my visiting friends next could have felt more cloying and gross than it did, and I was incredibly thankful for shoes that mean your feet can breath, especially since so much heat escapes (or becomes trapped) from extremities like your feet and head.

The Lemon Embroidered Platform Smoking Slipper that I have features a cute and somewhat quirky design like most of the Soludos slippers do, combining a minimalist shoe with playful embroidery and addictively breathable, soft material. I've started opting for them simply because they tend to dress up everything I wear without any comfort lost.

If I manage to work this pair down to threadbare platforms, I can pretty much guarantee I'll be buying myself a couple more just to get through the warmer months. Given how much I use them, I'll pay back what I spent in the first month I have them.

Two other Insider Picks members tried out the surprisingly great Soludos smoking slippers, and you can find their specific thoughts on each of their respective picks below.

Ellen Hoffman, commerce editor: Leather Zebra Jute Platform Smoking Slipper, $75

There are few pairs of shoes that have impressed me as much as Soludos' espadrilles right off the bat. They're amazingly comfortable — my pair had no break-in period at all (the first time I wore them I was heading to the airport, which could have been a terrible choice, but worked out so much better than I ever expected) — and lightweight enough that you'll want to wear them all summer.

Soludos also has so many fun designs that you’ll probably have trouble deciding on just one pair. I went with the Leather Zebra Jute Platform Smoking Slipper; since it’s a neutral color with a simple pattern, it goes with a wide variety of looks, from jeans to shorts to sundresses.

My pair is on sale right now, and I’m seriously debating whether to buy a second pair so I have it on hand when I eventually need to replace my current one.

Brandt Ranj, associate commerce editor: Anchor Embroidered Smoking Slipper, $65

I’ve disliked laced shoes since childhood and find every opportunity I can to wear adult-appropriate slip-ons. Soludos’ smoking slippers have a slightly casual look, but they’re well constructed and didn’t look out of place the dozen or so times I’ve worn them to the office. They may be called slippers, but they’re more like canvas boat shoes, and I plan on wearing them during a majority of the weekends I spend outdoors this summer.

A US Marine Corps photographer recently took some portraits of Marines assigned to the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group.

The Bataan Amphibious Ready Group "support[s] maritime security operations, provide[s] crisis response capability, and increase[s] theater security cooperation while providing a forward naval presence in Europe and the Middle East,"according to the Navy.

The photographer, Sgt. Matthew Callahan, took portraits of Marines assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit in Kuwait and in Romania, as well as the Marines' Romanian counterparts with whom they were training.

Check out his photos below:

Winsler and her military dog, Bella, have been together “since day one,” she said. “I got to train with Bella for six weeks, certify her, bring her to the fleet and stay on her. The 17 wildest celebrity conspiracy theories on the internet

$
0
0

katy perry jonbenet ramsey

One of the best and worst things about the internet is that a lot of people are wrong. Seldom are people more wrong than when it comes to conspiracy theories, and especially when it comes to theories about celebrities.

Some theories are made in perfect seriousness, and others as jokes. But if you believe everything you read online, then Stevie Wonder isn't blind, Britney Spears is a clone, Stephen King killed John Lennon, Beyoncé was never pregnant, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry have no beefNicolas Cage is immortal, and pretty much everyone is a member of the Illuminati.

It's easy to understand where these anxieties come from. Celebrities often misrepresent themselves, and can harbor secrets though not always bad ones. People can also be jealous of other people who are enormously successful, and believing these people are faking it helps bring them down a notch.

But all of these theories are, of course, false.

Here are some of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories on the internet, and why they're (mostly) wrong.

THE THEORY: Avril Lavigne died a decade ago and was replaced by a doppelgänger.

Avril Lavigne's life and career has taken a dramatic turn over the years. She started out as a pop star with a punk rock vibe who sang songs like "Complicated" and "Sk8ter Boi" with lyrics that were fun, easy to memorize, and stayed with you for years.

But by 2007, Lavigne's style had turned more bubblegummy and her sound was closer to other pop songs on the radio. "Girlfriend" and "Hello Kitty" may have been catchy, but that sounded like the work of a different artist. It didn't help that Lavigne, between 2013 and 2015, married Chad Kroeger, the lead singer of Nickleback, who is about as square as rock stars get.

How to explain it all? According to the theory, the real Lavigne took her own life in 2003, after her parents' divorce, and was replaced by a doppelgänger named Melissa Vandella. Vandella was originally hired by Lavigne to confuse the paparazzi, according to the theory, but stepped in when the real Lavigne had died and turned her sound into a poppier direction.

WHY IT'S NOT TRUE: The entire theory is based on several falsehoods. There's no evidence that Lavigne's parents are divorced. Allegations that blemishes on Lavigne's face have changed over the years can simply be explained with the fact that blemishes heal. Lavigne's nose may look different, sure, but it's more likely that she got a nose job than she's been replaced by a doppelgänger.

Finally, a Brazilian blog dedicated to the hoax and which had advanced it over the years admitted that the whole thing was a project to show how invented hoaxes can look true even when they're not.

THE THEORY: Pop star Katy Perry is actually JonBenét Ramsey, whose murder remains unsolved.

As the theory goes, Ramsey, who was killed at the age of six in 1996 in an unsolved murder, actually didn't die. Instead, her death was faked and she grew up to be singer Katy Perry.

WHY IT'S NOT TRUE: The theory was posted online by a YouTuber who goes by Dave Johnson. Johnson's YouTube account is filled with false, outlandish conspiracies, like that Michelle Obama is a man, the moon is a hologram, and that Anne Frank is actually acclaimed American author Francine Prose.

The Katy Perry theory, in particular, rests on no evidence. At one point, the YouTuber says that Perry and Ramsey are one and the same because they have similar eyebrows.

Snopes traced the roots of the theory and found that it was first sparked, jokingly, in 2010, when Perry shared a picture of herself as a child and some people thought she looked a bit like Ramsey.

Ramsey's body was autopsied in 1997. Katy Perry is alive and well.

THE THEORY: Stephen King killed John Lennon.

Paul McCartney died in 1966, you say? Yawn. The best Beatles conspiracy theory is that John Lennon wasn't killed by Mark David Chapman in 1980, but by none other than Stephen King.

The idea has been advanced by Steve Lightfoot, a guy who lives in Florida, whose theory became well known when he interrupted a town council meeting to talk about it. The police escorted him out of the chamber.

According to Lightfoot, King must be the real murderer of John Lennon because King kind of looks like Chapman. He had permission to commit the murder from Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, who were both annoyed by Lennon's pacifist efforts, according to Lightfoot.

WHY IT'S NOT TRUE: Stephen King is not Mark David Chapman, who actually killed John Lennon.

13 organizational hacks that will make your life so much easier

INSIDER home GE

organized closet

When it comes to having a clean house, one of the most important things is organization.

However, living in a busy home or with limited space can make being organized more aspirational than practical: things often end up thrown into dark corners of closets, or shoved under beds, lost for months on end.

While bookshelves, baskets, and custom closets make things easier, they often come at a hefty price. Luckily, you don't need stacks of cash to bring order to the disorder.

Here are 13 cheap and easy organizational hacks that will make your life easier.

Put all of your folded bed sheets into one of the matching pillowcases to keep everything together.

Forget struggling to find a matching bed set: next time you need to make a bed, everything you need will already be in one place. This nifty trick also keeps your linen closet looking tidy.

Create double hangers by using soda can tabs.

Put a soda can's tab around the neck of one hanger, then hang a second hanger from it to create a sort of second row of hangers to create more space. It's like a makeshift version of those double hangers you see at clothing stores.

Reuse an old disinfecting wipes container to hold plastic bags.

Clean out an old disinfecting wipes container and put your plastics bags inside. They will take up less space, and pulling them out one by one will be easy.

J Crew

J.Crew is in trouble.

The company announced Monday that its longtime CEO Mickey Drexler is being replaced. Jenna Lyons, J. Crew's creative director of 26 years, is also out.

Same-store sales have been down at J. Crew for the past three years; dropping by 8% in 2016, following a 10% decrease the year before, and the company has more than $2 billion in debt and less than $150 million in cash.

We went to check out a store in April to see what it's like to shop there and find out why the brand is struggling:

We visited J. Crew's flagship store on New York's Fifth Avenue on a Wednesday afternoon In April. The store is blocks away from its major competitors, Zara and H&M.

While J. Crew has seen three straight years of declines in same-store sales, these stores have seen growing sales, luring customers in with cheap prices and constant turnover of fashionable clothing and accessories.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, outgoing CEO Mickey Drexler said that the retailer's biggest mistake over the last few years was that it had raised prices at a time when customers were increasingly cost-conscious.

"We gave a perception of being a higher-priced company than we were — in our catalog, online, and in our general presentation," Drexler told The Journal. "Very big mistake."

Check out the very different designs of the Tesla Model 3 and the Chevy Bolt (GM, TSLA)

Chevrolet Bolt 6

The Tesla Model 3 and the Chevy Bolt are both long-range, all-electric cars for the people — each is about $35,000 to $37,000 before tax credits — but they embody very different design philosophies.

The Model 3, expected to launch later this year, is the handiwork of Tesla's chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen. When it was unveiled in March 2016, it set a slightly new direction for the carmaker. The front fascia, for example, lacked any conventional automotive cues, such as a grille — an unnecessary element, of course, because Teslas don't need to inhale air to burn gasoline.

The Tesla Model S and Model X would adopt this new language. In any case, the Model 3 continued Tesla's tradition of making its cars look sleek, fast, and sexy. The Model 3 might be for the mass market, but it evokes the luxury EVs that Tesla is selling.

Tesla Model 3

The Bolt is something else altogether: an electric car that aims for practicality over sex appeal, while still serving up some tasty performance. (You can read our review here.) Designer Stuart Norris and the South Korea-based studio made sure the Bolt was roomy inside and provided good cargo capacity.

The Bolt looks much more like an everyday five-door hatchback. In this sense, it's a throwback to some earlier ideas about alternative-fuel vehicles. Think of the Toyota Prius when it arrived — nobody would have called it beautiful. Its appearance advertised its virtue.

It's sexy versus sensible, then, when you put the Bolt and the Model 3 side by side. (By the way, we're talking about the preproduction version of the Model 3. The real deal won't enter our field of vision for a few more months.)

Here's an annotated examination of both vehicles.

Medical Sick Injection

Glancing at the headlines, it might seem like drug companies have a hard time avoiding anger over the prices of medications.

But public opinions about them have changed in some surprising ways in recent years, especially amid controversies over the high and rising prices of drugs, specifically in the US.

A new analysis from the research consulting firm Reputation Institute evaluated public perceptions of 17 pharmaceutical companies in seven areas: products and services, innovation, workplace, governance, citizenship, leadership, and financial performance. These contribute to companies' "RepTrak" score.

The report drew from 16,800 ratings done by people in eight countries, including the US, Canada, and the UK.

The report found that on average, drug companies' reputations have been going up over the past few years. The company with the highest reputation was AbbVie. Young people aged 18-24 tended to have a lower impression of pharmaceutical companies than older age groups. And of the eight countries included in the survey, those in the US had the most favorable view of the industry.

Pfizer, which is known for drugs like Lipitor and Viagra, had the lowest reputation of the 17 companies the Reputation Institute looked at. Pfizer didn't fare as well as its pharma counterparts in terms of its reputational ranking.

16. GlaxoSmithKline. RepTrak Points: 68.5

GlaxoSmithKline, headquartered in the UK, along with Pfizer were the only two companies that had "average" reputations, while the rest had "strong" reputations. GSK became the first big pharma company to have a female CEO when Emma Walmsley took on the role in March.

Switzerland-based Novartis scored a higher reputation than last year, which was the case for all but two companies.

The 10 airports in America people dislike the most

LaGuardia airport redesign

As Americans take to the skies in record numbers, our nation's airports are bursting at the seams. However, the J.D. Power 2016 North American Airport Satisfaction Study found that America's airports are simply not designed to handle the sheer volume of people and planes they are forced to support. In spite of that, the study found that overall customer satisfaction is actually improving.

According to the J.D. Power study, overall traveler satisfaction increased six points over the 2015 edition to 731 out of a possible 1,000 points.

"Many airports, especially the nation’s largest airports, were never built to handle the current volume of traveler traffic, often exceeding their design limits by many millions of travelers," J.D. Power's airport practice director Michael Taylor said in a statement. "Yet airports are overcoming infrastructure limits by affecting the things they can influence."

"Airports are successfully applying technology to improve check-in (+5 points year-over-year), security screening (+3 points) and the food, beverage and retail shopping (+10 points) experiences," Taylor added.

The J.D. Power study, now in its 11th year, measures overall traveler satisfaction with large and medium-sized airports in North America.

The study takes into consideration six factors — in order of importance — 1) terminal facilities,  2) airport accessibility, 3) security check, 4) baggage claim, 5) check-in/baggage check, and 6) food, beverage and retail.

The rankings are compiled from responses gathered from 38,931 travelers who have flow into or out of a North American airport over the past year.

In the study, travelers found Portland International and Tampa International to be the two most satisfying large airports in North America with scores of 786 and 775 respectively.

Las Vegas McCarran International and Orlando International finished third and fourth in the study of large airports with 759 and 751 points respectively.

With more than 100 million people passing through every year, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International is the busiest airport in the world.  It managed to finish in the middle of the pack with a respectable score of 733.

"If you think about it, that’s putting about one-third of the U.S. population through a few buildings in Georgia over the course of a year," Taylor said. "Yet, everything runs fairly efficiently."

However, some airports didn't fare so well. In fact, 10 of the 31 large airports featured in the study finished below the industry average of 724 points for large airports.

As expected, these are the some of America's most prominent and busiest airports.

At the bottom of the list is New York's LaGuardia Airport with a score of 649 points. But, things may be getting better for travelers making their way through LaGuardia.

The facility is undergoing a multi-billion dollar revamp that will see LaGuardia's small, aging terminals replaced with new state-of-the-art buildings.

"Those current terminals handle more than 13 million travelers a year. They were designed to handle only 8 million travelers," Taylor said. "This improvement has been needed for a long time. The new design is going to create major short-term headaches for LaGuardia travelers, but the results will be worth it. The design solves two major problems for the airport: overcrowding and the ability to move aircraft more efficiently on and off runways."

Unfortunately, the construction process of the new terminals has caused LaGuardia's already poor satisfaction score to fall even further. In 2016, LaGuardia's satisfaction score fell six-points over the previous year.

Close behind LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International also scored poorly on all factors included in the survey including terminal facilities, available shopping, baggage claim, check-in/baggage claim process, security check, and airport accessibility.

Here's a look at the 10 airports that fared the worst in the J.D. Power 2016 North American Airport Satisfaction Study.

These haunting photo overlays capture the horrors of D-Day

d-day before after

The D-Day invasion, code named Operation Overlord, was the largest seaborne invasion in history.

Almost 5,000 landing and assault craft, accompanied by 289 escort vessels and 277 minesweepers, from Canada, the US, Britain, and Australia took part in the operation. The Allies suffered a total of 226,386 casualties, but it proved a decisive moment in the war.

Suddenly, the Nazis were fighting a two-front war in Europe, leading to a division in their forces across multiple flanks. But the cost of D-Day, in both human lives and devastation of the surrounding regions of France, was immense.

Beach season is upon us. If you're in the market for an affordable summer home within spitting distance of the ocean spray, there are some under-the-radar places across the US where you can nab a beach house for less than $250,000

In other places, you'd better be a millionaire or billionaire if you want to get a showing.

In ritzy summer vacation spots like the Hamptons, Malibu, or Nantucket, for instance, the median price for property currently exceeds $3 million, according to a report from Realtor.com.

Realtor.com dug through its database to find the most expensive beachfront locales in America. It limited its scope to beach cities with populations between 1,000 to 100,000 and that had at least 30 properties on the market. And to ensure some geographic diversity, Realtor.com capped its list to two towns per state separated by at least 30 miles.

In Malibu, the most expensive beach town in the US, one neighborhood along the surf has earned the moniker "Billionaire's Beach." Music mogul David Geffen reportedly sold his home there last year for $85 million.

Read on for the rest of the 10 most expensive beach towns to buy a home — each of which has a median home price over $1.4 million.

d-day before after

The invasion of Normandy, which was named Operation Overlord, launched on June 6, 1944, and was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history.

Tuesday, June 6, marks the 73rd anniversary of Operation Overlord, commonly referred to as D-Day. A major operation during World War II, and the largest seaborne invasion in history, it marked the turning point in the fight against Axis powers in Europe.

Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe, gave this speech just prior to giving the order to begin the operation.

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

156,000 allied troops landed on five beaches, code named Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha. British and Canadian troops overcame light opposition at Gold, Juno and Sword, as did U.S. troops at Utah. American forces landing on Omaha beach faced the fiercest resistance, suffering 2,400 casualties. In total, the beach landings claimed the lives of 4,313 Allied troops, 2,499 Americans, and 1,914 others from Allied nations.

In conjunction with the beach landings, 13,000 paratroopers landed behind German lines and secured key towns, bridges, and crossroads in order to break German supply lines and limit reinforcements.

Today, Eisenhower’s words still ring true for the men who fought and died on the beaches, fields, and among the hedgerows of Normandy: “The eyes of the world are upon you.”

Below are eight historic photos from the days leading up to, during, and after one of the most brutal battles in contemporary history.

D-Day, the day Allied forces invaded France during World War II, marked a major victory over Nazi Germany and is said to have been a turning point in the war.

On that day, June 6, 1944, about 156,000 troops landed on beaches around Normandy. Some 10,000 Allied troops were killed, along with 9,000 Germans.

Over 70 years after the invasion, Reuters photographer Chris Helgren collected archive pictures of D-Day and returned to France to photograph their locations as they appear today.
