mac cheese tn short

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Annie's mac and cheese has a variety of popular flavors to choose from.
  • The classic Shells and Aged Cheddar flavor came out on top for its creamy texture.
  • Despite its cute shape, Bunny Pasta with Yummy Cheese landed in last place for its lack of cheesiness.

Macaroni and cheese has always been one of my favorite foods. As much as I love trying new mac and cheese creations at restaurants, boxed mac and cheese will always hold a special place in my heart. Annie's mac and cheese is my favorite but I never had a favorite 'flavor' so I decided to rank them all. So next time you can't decide on which Annie's box to make, look back at this article and pick which you would like to indulge on.

5. Bunny Pasta with Yummy Cheese

Also recognized as the pink box, this flavor was a little bland compared to the others. The shape was cute but the cheese didn't stick very well to it. Because of this, it ended up in last place.

4. Macaroni and Cheese

This box was definitely the most basic of them all, leaving it in fourth place. There was nothing very special about it, but it is still delicious if you want a classic box of mac and cheese.

3. Shells and White Cheddar

Shells and white cheddar is ranked three because it is good, but not great. There are some worse and some better. The white cheddar taste is very strong and if that's the flavor you are looking for, it is very good.

A steak master shares his 7 steps to grilling the perfect cut of meat

grilled steak

Becoming a master at grilling steak is easier said than done. Sometimes the steak ends up too rare or, even worse, terribly overcooked.

But if you're looking to truly impress guests at your next backyard barbecue, you'll want to try these steps to the perfect steak, courtesy of chef Wade Wiestling of Mastro's Steakhouse.

Emma Rechenberg contributed reporting to an earlier version of this article.

SEE ALSO: The best steakhouse in every state

1. Choose your meat.

Wiestling recommends a juicy rib eye because "it's extremely tender and fatty and extremely flavorful."

Specifically, Wiestling suggests selecting the spinalis cap of the rib eye, which is typically known as the most tender piece of meat on the cow.

2. Pour a glass of wine.

"When I'm cooking steak, that's the only thing I'm doing," Wiestling told Business Insider.

He said properly grilling steak requires your complete attention. Wiestling recommends tossing a salad or baking a potato after the steak is done cooking instead of attempting to multitask.

"There's no need to walk away," he said. "That's why I pour a glass of wine ahead of time."

3. Unwrap the steak and let it sit at room temperature for an hour.

Wiestling says the key to making great steak is to let it come to room temperature before you cook it.

"If you throw an ice-cold slab of beef on the grill, your chances of getting it cooked to the perfect temperature are going to be more difficult," he said. "You may not get that nice char on it."

When the steak adjusts to room temperature, the meat relaxes and the fats soften up. This brings the steak to its prime grilling state.

San Francisco is so expensive that one couple decided to live in their van

Juliana and Richmond are living their most Instagrammable life.

In 2015, the couple, who had only been dating for four months at the time, decided to move out of their small, pricey apartments in San Francisco and convert a used Sprinter van into their mobile dream home. Saying goodbye to the city's rental market meant the pair could afford to quit their jobs and travel the West Coast in their souped-up van for a year. They blogged about their adventures online and on Instagram, attracting over 120,000 followers.

We caught up with Juliana and Richmond during a pitstop in San Francisco to see why #vanlife, with its cramped quarters and lack of a bathroom, beats apartment-living.

SEE ALSO: This couple couldn't afford to live in San Francisco, so they're building tiny homes made from shipping containers

When Richmond and Juliana met online, it didn't take long for the pair to figure out they both wanted to take great American road trips, as depicted in their favorite books.

There was one major obstacle in their way: rent. San Francisco has the most expensive rental market in America. They both paid $1,500 a month, leaving little left over for travel.

Van dwelling has become a popular alternative to apartment-living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The bohemian movement recently gained a buzzed about profile in The New Yorker.

Richmond and Juliana quickly decided to forgo an apartment for a four-wheeled home.

A prominent research group in Switzerland has put together a list of "estimated transfer values" for the most expensive footballers in Europe – and there is no room for 32-year-old forward Cristiano Ronaldo in the top ten.

Football think tank CIES Football Observatory adopts a  "scientific approach" to its methodology, taking into consideration six factors when putting a price on the head Europe's top players.

The six factors are:

  1. Player performance: The quality and consistency of their form
  2. Player performance in relation to their club: Are they the star player?
  3. International status: How established are they for their country?
  4. Contract: Players with longer deals are more expensive
  5. Age: Younger players command higher fees
  6. Position: Goal scorers are more expensive than goalkeepers

Without further ado, here are the 25 most valuable footballers the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1. They are ranked in ascending order.

25: Christian Eriksen, Tottenham Hotspur — €82.5 million (£73 million)

24: Edinson Cavani, Paris Saint-Germain — €82.8 million (£73.25 million)

The South Korean capital of Seoul recently completed a massive urban garden that rivalsthe High Line, New York City's famed elevated park.

Called Seoullo 7017 (or Seoul Street), the project turned an abandoned overpass into a lush public park with over 24,000 plants.

In 2015, the Dutch architecture firm MRVDVwon a competition launched by the city to design the milelong park that hovers over the city.

Construction of the estimated $33 million project (funded by the local government) started a year later, and it opened in late May.

Seoullo 7017 is part of a larger urban regeneration effort that aims to make Seoul, a city with over 10 million residents, more pedestrian-friendly.

Check it out below.

Seoul's Seoullo 7017 winds around buildings and stretches 3,000 feet long in the city center.

The garden went up on a portion of an abandoned highway built in 1970. In 2006, the city shut it down due to concerns about its structural integrity.

Visitors can access the 55-foot-high park by stairs at specific points.

The best nursing pillows you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

IP_Nursing_Pillow_Buying_Guide_With_Badge 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Breastfeeding is natural and amazing for your baby, but that doesn’t mean it always comes easy. We've tested and researched many nursing pillows, and the My Brest Friend is the best one for keeping your baby in the right spot during feeding, and it gives you great back and arm support.

Nursing my two boys was a wonderful experience. It helped cement our bond, and with all of the other baby stuff I had to buy, it was nice not having to spend big on formula. But as most breastfeeding moms will tell you, there’s a learning curve to the process, and a good nursing pillow can be a lifesaver as you figure it out. Nursing pillows give babies a boost, positioning them close to your breast so you can focus on getting a pain-free latch. Some can also be used as normal pillows or soft “nests” for growing babies to lounge or sit on.

There are a few expert reviews and roundups of nursing pillows that evaluate ease of use and comfort. We considered these opinions, my own experience using a range of nursing pillows, and the reviews of thousands of moms on major retail sites to make our picks.

Our favorite nursing pillows include a supportive aid for smaller babies, an easier-to-use pillow once they get bigger, an ultra-versatile pick, an all-organic option, and a twin-friendly pillow for moms who want to attempt tandem nursing. Also, check out our guide to the best baby monitors and stay tuned for more baby-related guides soon.

Although the My Brest Friend is the best nursing pillow for most moms, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Dr. Brown’s Gia Nursing Pillow, the Boppy Nursing Pillow, the Blessed Nest Nesting Pillow, and the Twin Z Pillow.

The best nursing pillow overall

Why you'll love it: The My Brest Friend nursing pillow is uber-supportive and stable to keep your baby in place during seemingly never-ending feeding sessions.

By all means, snicker at the name. But it’s true: My Brest Friend really was my best friend when I had a hungry newborn and only the foggiest idea how to nurse. This nursing pillow sets itself apart from others with a wider, flatter, firmer foam insert that keeps small babies where they need to be. It also wraps all the way around your waist, providing additional support for the back and arms, and secures with a buckle to make sure it stays in place.

The tight fit ensures baby isn’t rolling into a gap between the pillow and your body, notes The Nightlight, and that's a common annoyance with other nursing pillows. The pillow helped boost my confidence and keep my son in place for a good latch when he was tiny, and trust me, a good latch is everything unless you like bloody nipples.

My Brest Friend’s cover varies depending on whether you choose the original or My Brest Friend Deluxe. The original has an all-cotton cover that comes at least 18 colors and patterns. The deluxe has a plusher, softer polyester fabric that Baby Gear Lab testers say is better at repelling moisture. Both can be unzipped and machine washed, but note that they’re supposed to air-dry to prevent shrinkage. Both also have a sewn-in side pocket that I sometimes used to stash a water bottle, my phone, or pacifiers.

So why wouldn’t you like the My Brest Friend? Mainly because it’s cumbersome. Once I felt more confident that I knew what I was doing, I disliked having to position the pillow just so and buckle myself in, especially at 2 a.m. That’s Alpha Mom’s beef, too, and a common refrain in critical Amazon reviews.

The deluxe version helps alleviate at least part of this issue by adding Velcro that means you don’t always have to use two hands to buckle or unbuckle. Some reviewers also complain that this pillow smells pretty bad at first, so plan on washing the cover and letting the foam insert air out before use.

Despite the minor drawbacks, the My Brest Friend is the best nursing pillow you can buy — especially if you're a new mom.

Pros: Firm surface, wide nursing area, no gap, buckle for secure fit, storage pocket, back and arm support for mom

Cons: Hard to use at night, smells bad at first, covers must be air-dried

The best nursing pillow for older babies or experienced moms

Why you'll love it: Once you’ve got breastfeeding down to a science, you'll want Dr. Brown’s Gia Nursing Pillow for comfort and ease of use.

As much as I loved My Brest Friend for the early days of breastfeeding, once I really got the hang of it, I wanted something that I could use more easily in a sleepless haze. Dr. Brown’s Gia Nursing Pillow was perfect. It looks like a giant comma, and you simply pull the curved portion to your waist – easy-peasy.

The pillow is tall and wide, which means there’s no hunching for taller moms and plenty of room even for chunky babies. It’s also angled, positioning babies at an incline while feeding. That felt pretty natural for me, and it can help ward off reflux, too.

The Gia has polyester fill and a quilted 100 percent cotton shell. Baby Gear Lab says the Gia offers a great balance between plush softness and support for a nursing baby, and I have to agree — the feel was one of the things that sold me. The zipper-free covers, sold separately, are made from a polyester and cotton blend. Both the covers and the pillow itself can be tossed in the washer and dryer, which is awesome if you have a burpy baby, notes The Wise Baby.

Now for the cons: Baby Gear Lab grouses that the Gia’s sloping design means moms have to flip the pillow in the middle of a nursing session if they want to feed on both sides. While that’s true, I never found it to be a big deal, especially since I needed to burp my son anyway — I just flipped it quickly when he was on my shoulder. But it is something to consider, especially for new moms who aren’t as comfortable with positioning and latch.

Some Amazon reviewers say it suffers from a problem that dogs many nursing pillows — a smaller baby can roll into the crack between the pillow and your body. Again, it's a good reason to save the Gia for nursing an older baby.

Pros: Good for tall moms, supportive, easy to use, helps prevent reflux, plush feel, pillow and covers can be machine-washed and dried

Cons: Pillow must be flipped during use, baby can roll into gap between mom and pillow

The best nursing pillow that does more

Why you'll love it: The Boppy Bare Naked Pillow is a great breastfeeding aid for many moms, and it also serves as a lounger, tummy-time companion, or prop for babies learning how to sit.

A Boppy is a go-to baby shower gift for many soon-to-be moms. I received one, too, and yes, if you’re counting, that means I had three nursing pillows. Boppy’s biggest strength is that it can be repurposed in several ways: As a way to aid babies during tummy time, as a cushion for babies just starting to sit up, or as a spot for a baby to lounge and rest. I’ve used it for all of these purposes, and of course, nursing, too.

Another big pro for the Boppy is that there’s a cover for practically any taste, whether you like stripes, chevron, polka dots, cute animals, or something a little more muted. Sold separately, they’re also available in a number of fabrics. There’s an inexpensive polyester-cotton blend, or you can upgrade to softer microfiber or minky fabric, or all-organic. The pillow and slipcovers can also be machine-washed and dried.

As for nursing, Boppy has strengths and weaknesses. Like the Gia, it’s easy to use — just pull it to you and let your baby go to town — but as Baby Gear Lab notes, it’s also quite round, which almost guarantees the baby will roll toward you. I also found that the pillow squished down too much to provide enough support, often forcing me to hunch over my son while feeding him, which is not exactly comfortable and not a great way to get a good latch. Alpha Mom also notes that it might not fit comfortably around all women’s waists.

Regardless, it's a good nursing pillow that's versatile enough to serve different purposes as your baby grows.

Pros: Easy to use, versatile, wide range of fabrics and covers, pillow and covers can be machine-washed and dried

Cons: Babies can easily roll off, pillow can get squished down, may slip off some women’s waists

Playing games on Samsung's massive new computer monitor and other ultrawide monitors gives you an advantage

I've been playing PC games on Acer's X34 ultra-wide monitor for a few months, and I can safely say that compared to standard monitors, wider monitors offer a distinct advantage.

Ultrawide monitors like Acer's X34 have a 21:9 aspect ratio, whereas standard monitors have a 16:9 aspect ratio. That 21:9 aspect ratio translates to a wider field-of-view than a standard monitor, which means I can spot enemies that I normally wouldn't see with a standard monitor.

acer predator x34 game

The benefits of a wider field-of-view was one of Samsung's main selling points for its latest "super ultrawide" CHG90 monitor, which has an insane 32:9 aspect ratio and is wider than standard 16:9 monitors, and even the 21:9 X34 ultrawide monitor. From Samsung's demo and my own experience with ultrawide monitors, those benefits ring true.

Check it out:

CHECK OUT MORE PHOTOS OF SAMSUNG'S SUPER ULTRAWIDE CHG90 MONITOR: Samsung just unveiled the widest computer monitor you can buy — here's how it looks in person

Here's what the "Battlefield 1" game looks like while using a standard 16:9 monitor.

And here's what "Battlefield 1" looks like on Samsung 32:9 CHG90 monitor.

See those green circles surrounding the red highlighted enemies on the edges of the screen? You may have spotted the enemy on the left with a standard monitor, but you may not have spotted the enemy on the very right. Being aware of that enemy on the right, I can plan my next move and react to dangers much more quickly and effectively.

Is it cheating?

Though I'm a huge fan of these ultrawide computer monitors, I've certainly felt that they've given me an unfair advantage while playing against players with standard monitors.

There were a few instances while playing "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" where I saw an enemy player on the very edge of the X34's ultrawide screen, and I was able to dispatch those players before they could even see me. There's no way of knowing whether or not the enemy players had a regular or ultrawide monitor, but assuming they had the more-common standard monitor, the playing field essentially became uneven because of my choice of hardware.

With summer approaching, you’re probably going to need something to read.

Business Insider Netherlands asked successful entrepreneurs and CEOs for book recommendations.

Which book inspired them the most? What should we read to improve our lives or to become more successful?

Here are the titles to keep an eye on.

Piera Gelardi is one of the founders of an online magazine focused on millennial women: Refinery29. Within a few years, the company went from a startup with four founders (in 2005) to a million-dollar business with over 400 employees in offices around the world.

“I love Ed Catmull’s ‘Creativity, Inc,’ she told Business Insider Netherlands. It’s all about providing a creative culture and I think it’s a must-read for entrepreneurs and creative leaders.”

Apart from that, Gelardi has recently taken an interest in the art of Kaizen. “It’s a popular thing in tech nowadays, it’s mostly about how small changes can lead to big things in the future. For me, it was something I already kind of knew, but reading about it put it all in a really good perspective. So yes, I would recommend that as well.”

For the past six years, 32-year-old Maartje Frederiks has been the CEO of meal-kit delivery company HelloFresh (the market leader in Europe) for the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Her office holds several shelves with inspiring books that employees can borrow.

“‘Delivering Happiness from Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos, is really interesting,” Frederiks told Business Insider Netherlands. “The book explains in a very inspiring way how they built their entrepreneurial culture. How Zappos shares that culture and maintains it. Apart from that, it’s also well-written.”

‘Essentialism’ by Greg McKeown

Babbel_Cafe_Laptop_iPhone6_ENGSPAWhether or not you're traveling this summer, learning another language is bound to come in handy. Easier said than done however, when learning another language is costly in both time and money, not to mention the difficulty.

Enter Babbel, the world’s very first language-learning app.

Babbel seeks to give you the shortest path to real-life conversations, not generic textbook phrases. Offering 85,000 hours of content in 14 languages ranging from Spanish to Indonesian, the app builds the course around you, starting with tailoring lessons to teach grammar concepts shared between your native tongue and the new.

Using cognitive techniques designed to transform new vocabulary into long-term memory, Babbel further surpasses competitors by using the voices of native speakers, and testing your speech against theirs using speech recognition software teaching you a more authentic accent.

But for me, what really sets Babbel apart from the other methods of learning a new language is its convenience. From pricing (a yearly subscription costs you just £4.75 a month) to the 10-15 minute lessons on your phone, Babbel actively works to accommodate you so that you stick with it. As a commuter, the idea of passing the hour-long train ride doing something constructive rather than playing iPhone games is very appealing.

So whether you’re traveling to Spain and looking a quick path to conversing in Spanish, or simply wanting to self-improve on the train ride to work, Babbel gives you that option. At £9.99 a month, £7 a month for a three-month subscription, £5.50 a month for a six-month subscription, or £4.75 a month for the year-long subscription, Babbel only gets better the more passionate you are about it. And if you just want to give it a try before committing to it, Babbel offers you a 20-day, money-back guarantee.

Below, I walk you through Babbel's free demo and the numerous options it offers.

You can get started learning a new language with Babbel here >>

By giving Babbel's free demo a try, I was able to get a taste of what its learning experience is like. I thought I'd give German a try and selected beginner.

Immediately Babbel tailors the learning experience to the user; by inputting your age, the difficulty and even the nature of the conversations are made relevant to what you need to know.

While most of the beginner course was intuitive, it was helpful to hear the accent of a native speaker through my headphones and I caught myself mouthing the words along with their voice.

How to keep your laptop safe in your checked luggage

$

laptop in airportThe INSIDER Summary:

  • U.S. Department of Homeland Security banned electronics larger than cellphones in aircraft cabins, which means if you're going to Europe you'll need to pack your laptop in your checked bag.
  • Pack your laptop delicately and keep an external hard drive so all your most important files are backed up.

While the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently decided not to expand a ban that restricts all electronics larger than a cell phone from entering the cabin on direct flights from certain Middle Eastern countries, the ban is not off the table for Europe and other regions around the world.

DHS Secretary John Kelly said Sunday that his department was even considering extending the restrictions to all international flights arriving and departing the U.S. That would mean travelers flying in and out of the U.S. would need to check their laptops, tablets, and large cameras with the rest of their luggage before boarding their flights.

The rule would pose a problem both for outright theft and damage, as well as potential security breaches of private information. Especially for business travelers who may be carrying classified corporate information, the thought of checking a computer for a long-haul flight is not ideal.

“Both as a consumer and a computer security professional, I am not keen on checking a laptop in my bag,” Stephen Cobb, a systems security expert from the IT security firm ESET, told Travel + Leisure.

If you’re traveling to one of the Middle Eastern airports already included in the order, or if you need to check a device in the future, here are some tips from experts for staying safe.

Pack it like the delicate flower it is

Cargo luggage is often tossed around while being loaded and unloaded, and that is unlikely to change in the event of a laptop ban. One shipping service recommended wrapping the device in bubble wrap and fitting it into a snug cardboard box when packing to prevent it from moving around.

The same principle applies to the bag in which it's packed — make sure everything is tight so the device won't be jostling around inside a bag.

Have a backup plan

Investing in an external hard drive or a laptop model where the drive pops out allows travelers the peace of mind of keeping their most important data with them in the cabin. An external hard drive is a good investment for anyone with a lot of important data, as damage to devices can happen anywhere, not just at 36,000 feet.

Take a cue from Mr. Robot

Encryption is the name of the game when it comes to traveling with valuable data, Cobb says. Most Windows and Mac operating systems have a full-disk encryption feature that users can enable in their settings.

Travelers looking for even more protection can download additional encryption software for their devices.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Carbohydrates can come in the form of sugars, starches, or fibers.
  • The best carbs are the ones that are full of fiber and give your body energy.
  • Refined and processed carbs like those found in white bread should be avoided.
  • Some foods that are surprisingly high in carbs include carrots, cashews, peanut butter, artichokes, corn, salad dressings, and fruit.

You may think that all you need to do to cut carbs out of your life is to stop eating bread, rice, and noodles, but it's actually a lot more complicated than that.

Carbohydrates are sugars, starches, and fibers that can be found in fruits, grains, vegetables, and milk products.

In other words, they're a nutrient that's prevalent in a lot of foods.

Despite the popularity of low carb diets, not all carbs are bad. Carbs that are full of fiber provide your body with the energy it needs to function. It's the refined and processed carbs found in white bread, for example, that you want to avoid.

We rounded up 12 foods whose carb content might surprise you.

We're not saying you should avoid these foods by any means; we're simply pointing out that they have significantly more carbs than you would probably guess. Like with everything, moderation is key.

Carrots

Chances are you didn't think you were consuming a whole lot of carbs when you were indulging in some carrots and hummus. Think again. A cup of carrots has around 12 grams of carbs.

Peanut butter

Thanks to the fact that its ingredients are mostly natural, Smuckers All Natural Peanut Butter only has six grams of carbs per serving. Jif's Creamy Peanut Butter has two grams more per serving, but the brand's reduced fat version is the biggest offender when it comes to the nutrient. There are 15 grams of carbs in one serving.

Yogurt

While plain yogurt does have carbs, the kind of yogurt you really need to watch out for is flavored yogurt. The increased sugar content in flavored yogurt translates to more carbs as well. For example, most of Chobani's fruit-flavored Greek yogurt has around 18 grams of carbs per serving.

Inside California's 'meat camp,' where women learn to butcher and grill what's for dinner

Summer camps for grown-ups have surged in popularity in recent years, with more than one million adults going to camp each year. These getaways often combine sing-a-longs and bonfires with "flip cup" tournaments and costume parties, allowing people to revive childhood memories or experience the tradition for the first time.

But Meat Camp is neither the sleep-away camp you may remember from your childhood nor its rowdy grown-up imitation. Founded in 2015, the three-day retreat in northern California teaches attendees how to butcher their own meat and grill it over a wood fire.

Dozens of people attend annually, and registration starts at $1,400 per person.

One of the camp's five annual sessions is exclusively for women. Anya Fernald, cofounder and CEO of Belcampo Meat Co., which hosts the camp, wanted to create a safe space for women to learn culinary skills that are traditionally considered "men's work." Here's what it's like.

Meat Camp welcomes people of all experience levels. Past attendees include a Google engineer who built his own sous vide machine and a woman who was afraid to cook meat on her own.

With the women-only session, Anya Fernald, founder of Meat Camp, says she wants to change the perception that grilling is a "man's job."

Fernald's farm sits at the foot of Mount Shasta, 24 miles from the Oregon border. Her company uses sustainable practices to raise livestock and process it for butchers.

Fernald opened the space to overnight guests for Meat Camp in 2015.

This weekend, Puerto Ricans made their way to the polls to vote on the possibility of the US territory officially becoming the 51st state.

While 97% of the votes were in favor of Puerto Rico becoming a state, the election was widely boycotted. With only 23% of the population participating, it was the lowest voter turnout of any Puerto Rican election since 1967, according to the Washington Post. While some protested it in the streets, others simply sat it out.

Still, Governor Ricardo A. Rosselló of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party plans to take the results to Congress to get a vote on letting the territory become a state, which experts say could be an uphill battle.

Below, see 15 photos that show how just how gorgeous Puerto Rico is.

The Amazon Echo is one of the most useful tech gadgets on the market — here’s how I use mine

Screen Shot 2017 04 24 at 9.58.50 AMLast year I went from an Amazon Echo skeptic to a daily user.

It's convenient to get information using only my voice, especially when my hands are full.

Over the past year the Echo has become more useful thanks to regular software updates and its integration with different smart home accessories.

Below are the six ways I use my Echo on a regular, and sometimes daily, basis.

You can buy the Amazon Echo for $40 off for a limited time only here.

To adjust my lights

One of the first things that drew me to the Echo was its integration with smart home accessories, and Philips' Hue bulbs in particular.

I only have overhead lightning in my apartment, and it's incredibly convenient to be able to say, "Alexa, turn off my bedroom lights" when it's time for bed.

If you're new to Hue, you'll need to pick up one of their starter kits, which include three bulbs and a Hue hub. Once you have a hub, you can add up to 50 lights.

To get the weather

I could look outside or check my Apple Watch, but as I'm getting dressed in the morning I've gotten into the routine of asking my Echo about the weather.

You can ask about the day's weather in general, or ask more specific questions like, "Is it going to rain today?"

I also ask my Echo about the weather before I travel, so I have a good idea of what to expect when I reach my destination.

To set timers and convert measurements when cooking

I've been cooking a lot more this year, and the Echo has helped me keep on top of everything.

Sometimes I need to know how many tablespoons are in a cup (16, by the way) halfway through a recipe. Asking the Echo saves me from having to stop what I'm doing to pull out my phone; time is usually of the essence while cooking and a lost minute can have a big impact on a dish.

Other times I need to boil something for 11 minutes while I work on another part the meal I'm preparing. I just ask Alexa to set a timer and wait to hear the alarm go off. I'm even able to ask how much time is left, which is convenient if I'm working on meal that needs to come together perfectly.

The stunning Swiss Alps 'hotel room' without walls is opening a new location — take a look

null stern

From a lodge sculpted from ice to one made from metal sheets, it seems like there's an infinite number of offbeat hotels that re-think the traditional B&B.

One open-air hotel, called Null Stern, eliminates walls and a roof altogether. Staying there is a lot like camping. Located in the middle of the Swiss Alps, it only features a bed with linens.

In German, the hotel's name translates to "zero stars."

"The star is not the hotel but each guest," the hotel's co-founder, Daniel Charbonnier, told Business Insider. "We got rid of all the walls, and the only thing left is you and your experience."

Null Stern launched with one bed in July 2016, and it opened its second in early June on the Göbsi summit in Appenzell, Switzerland.

Take a look below.

Located 6,463 feet above sea level, the first Null Stern 'room' sits in the Swiss Alps. It costs about $210 a night.

To install the bed on the mountains, a construction crew flattened the land.

The hotel has no walls, roof, or bathroom — only a queen bed with a pair of nightstands and lamps. A public bathroom is about a five-minute walk down the mountain, Charbonnier says.

Scientific ways to be a better kisser

couple kissing christmas tree

If you're in a long-term relationship, kissing may seem like a pleasant afterthought to you.

But, with 59% of men and 66% of women saying that they've rethought their attraction to someone because they were a bad kisser, it might be worth thinking about improving your form.

We've all heard the tips from teen magazines and dished about someone's kissing quality to our friends, but it turns out you may want to turn to your science textbooks to perfect your kissing technique. Some of these biology lessons may just help you get your chemistry in order with a new love or an old one.

Have a drink (in moderation)

Turns out that glass of wine nervously chugged on a first date can actually improve your kissing form.

Alcohol stimulates some of the same chemicals in your brain as kissing someone does. So, if you and your date partake in a reasonable amount of alcohol your brains will enjoy it that much more if you give them a goodbye kiss.

But, as I'm sure most people have learned at one time or another, getting too sloppy and intoxicated can ruin any good kiss, so be sure to enjoy beverages in moderation.

Tilt your head the right way

If you've ever tilted the wrong way when going in for a kiss, you've probably experienced one really awkward moment. But, it turns out more than often, the correct way to tilt your head when going in for a kiss is to the right.

A study found the two-thirds of people tilt their heads to the right when going in for a kiss. So, while it's not an exact science, teaching yourself to go in for the kiss that way will help eliminate some awkward forehead bonking.

Get your timing right

While you may be able to kiss and make up after a fight, catching someone on a bad day will make the kiss less than satisfying.

Kissing someone in a stressful, upsetting or strange environment makes it less likely that they'll enjoy the kiss. That's because of a pesky hormone called cortisol that will inhibit your ability to enjoy a big smooch.

So, if you're wanting to plant one on your partner, best to wait until you're both calm and happy.
