15 movies you need to see that people agree are absolutely perfect

mad max fury road furiosa

We've all been there. It's a Friday night and once again you're scrolling through Netflix or the television guide trying to find a good movie.

That's where movie fans come in to help. A while back, Reddit user VarrickCarter23 asked the /r/movies subredditwhat films they would consider a perfect 10/10 and they received an enormous response.

While some of the films may not shock you — "Toy Story,""There Will Be Blood"— others include great performances you may have overlooked when they were first released in theaters.

The entire list of responses is pretty lengthy, but we've highlighted 15 in here and included the fans' reasonings as to why you should spend time watching these flicks. We encourage you to check out the full list on Reddit here.

1. "Her" (2013)

Synopsis: "A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need."

"I don't consider it one of the best things ever or anything but I think it's a near flawless piece of film. It just set things up so well that no real plot point would feel forced or out of character. I love the implications, how the year is never specified, or what the rest of the world is like.

"The story is just really really simple, yet you find yourself getting sucked in easily. As someone doing long distance this film connected with me pretty strongly."— VarrickCarter23

2. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004)

Synopsis:"When their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a procedure to have each other erased from their memories. But it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with."

"Almost everything is done flawlessly: The acting is superb, the music is good, the plot is engaging, it's funny, its unique, its dramatic, it's depressing, it's lighthearted, it's surprising ... it invokes almost every emotion out of me and it does it with soaring colors, literally.

"What I really adore is the camera work. The way things disappear out of a scene or a window, or the tricks with lighting, or building giant sets to make it look real, angles and tracking shots ... all of it is masterfully done. Charlie Kaufman did not direct this and he wasn't even the only one who worked on the story but his screenplay just jumps out at you. I think he's one of the best working today and this screenplay solidifies that."— VarrickCarter23

3. "The Thing" (1982)

Synopsis: "A research facility in Antarctica comes across an alien force that can become anything it touches with 100% accuracy. The members must now find out who's human and who's not before it's too late."

"Absolutely perfect horror movie. Interesting premise, awesome characters, incredible special effects, killer soundtrack, perfectly executed tension."— JendoShabo

RANKED: The 10 worst US senators for the environment

donald trump regulations

In perhaps a reflection of the passionate environmental debate happening across the country, EPA administrator Scott Pruitt plans to pit "red" teams against "blue" teams to debate climate change.

President Donald Trump has pledged to withdraw the US from the Paris agreement, a move which led mayors, governors, leading academics, and some of the biggest businesses in the US to start a movement to remain by the Paris Agreement pledges even if the country won't.

With so much disagreement about environmental policy in the air, many people are turning to their representatives on the issue.

We dug into the League of Conservation Voters' annual scorecard to rank US senators based on their environmental legacies, according to the nonprofit political action organization's "lifetime score" of lawmakers' voting records. The most recent scorecard is from 2016, so new senators who were elected in November weren't included.

The 15 TV shows that cost Netflix the most money

$
0
0

House of Cards

While the exact practice of determining the worth of a tech company is a form of economic voodoo that has historically proven to be fairly unreliable, estimates suggest that Netflix is worth somewhere around $70 billion. Now, while that might not be an exact figure, it’s a number that should let you know that the world’s most popular streaming service has money to burn.

While we have no doubt that a fair bit of that money goes to things like overhead, payroll, and such other fun corporate expenses, Netflix can certainly afford to spend a good deal of that money on producing original content and acquiring popular shows. So that’s exactly what they do.

Netflix drops quite a bit of money every year on new shows to add to their service. While you may lament the loss of a certain program or Netflix’s decision to not renew a certain beloved program, in order to really appreciate how expensive it is for the service to maintain a respectable roster of films and shows, you need to look at exactly how much the most expensive Netflix shows cost. In doing so, you may find that your $9.99 a month is actually a greater value than you thought.

These are the 15 TV shows that cost Netflix a ton of money:

SEE ALSO: RANKED: The 20 best acting performances on 'Game of Thrones'

15. "The Walking Dead"— $1.35 million an episode

The details on this one are a bit vague. For instance, we know that Netflix secured the exclusive streaming rights to "The Walking Dead" in 2011. At the time, neither side openly disclosed the figures behind this deal, but a few industry outlets did some digging and came up with the seemingly generous figure of $1.35 million an episode. This estimate operates under the assumption that the deal was only for episodes available at the time (which was about the first two seasons) and that later arrangements weren’t made to include subsequent episodes.

Even still, that deal would have been worth a little over $25 million. That puts it just ahead of several Netflix shows that just hit the $25 million mark, including "Narcos," which was “held ransom” by Escobar’s brother for $1 billion. That’s one exorbitant fee Netflix didn’t pay.

14. "Scrubs"— $26 million a year

"Scrubs" is one those shows that a variety of television viewers absolutely love. Fans of smart writing dig the show’s clever jabs and nonsensical detours from reality. Medical drama viewers enjoy Scrubs’ surprisingly heartfelt moments of genuine emotion. Pretty much everyone seems to dig the show’s memorable cast of characters.

So, it’s not too surprising that Netflix would pay a high fee for the rights to stream NBC’s hit comedy, but the reported $26 million they pony up every year for the rights to host the entire series is an eye-popping number. Is it worth it? Well, every time a subscriber says "Oh, they have 'Scrubs'" or someone compares the price of the full "Scrubs" series set to the cost of a Netflix subscription, Netflix probably finds a way to justify the high cost.

13. Netflix's Marvel series — $40 million a season

This entry is a bit tricky to put an exact price tag on. Technically, you might want to add a few dollars to the total of each of these shows, given that Netflix only gained the right to produce them after they paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 million for the rights to Disney, Marvel, and Lucasfilm properties. That being the case, you could make an argument that these are actually the most expensive shows in the Netflix lineup.

However, as it’s not really feasible to break down that $300 million into Marvel-sized chunks, we’re going with the reported $40 million production budget each Marvel Netflix show reportedly costs. There might be a little variation in the exact figures, and "The Defenders" will likely end up being the most expensive of them all, but these are still some pricey shows, no matter how you slice it.

Three days after North Korea demonstrated its ability to hit the US with long-range nuclear missiles, the US, South Korea, and Japan put on a display of air power expressly meant to frighten Kim Jong Un.

Flying 10 hours from Guam to the Korean peninsula, US B-1 Lancer bombers joined up with South Korean F-15s and dropped dud bombs at a range near the demilitarized border between North and South Korea. On the way back, Japanese F-2 fighters escorted the US heavy bombers.

"North Korea’s actions are a threat to our allies, partners and homeland," Gen. Terrence O’ Shaughnessy, Pacific Air Forces commander, said in a statement. "Let me be clear, if called upon we are trained, equipped and ready to unleash the full lethal capability of our allied air forces."

Amazon is killing these 7 companies (AMZN)

Amazon is on a roll.

The company just celebrated the biggest day in its history with the 30-hour Prime Day that ended on Tuesday. According to Amazon, the event grew 60% since last year, though the company didn't provide specific sales figures.

However, when Amazon thrives, other companies often suffer. Even the mere rumor that Amazon is entering a new sector can cause potential rivals' stocks to plummet. On Wednesday, Zillow's stock dropped 3% following whispers that Amazon is building a real estate service of its own.

Here are seven companies that the ecommerce giant threatens:

SEE ALSO: Amazon Prime Day signaled a huge change in how Americans shop

Best Buy

While Best Buy has been under siege by Amazon for years, the electronics retailer long had one advantage — the Geek Squad of employees ready to help customers with technical difficulties.

However, Recode reported that Amazon was preparing to launch a Geek Squad of its own, in the form of "army of in-house gadget experts to offer free Alexa consultations as well as product installations for a fee." Shares of Best Buy dropped 7.5% Monday after the news broke.

Energizer

The future of batteries may be online — and that's bad news for companies like Energizer

While online sales of batteries only make up roughly 5% of total battery sales today, UBS said in a note on Wednesday that it expects that figure to rise to 17% by 2025. With Amazon making up roughly 90% of online battery sales and looking to create its own private label battery brand, UBS says that is going to create some major complications for Energizer.

Macy's

Macy's and other department stores, such as JCPenney and Kohl's, are facing off against Amazon — and coming up short.

"Internet retailers (led by Amazon) have added $27.8 billion to their apparel revenue since 2005, while dept stores have lost $29.6 billion," Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a 2016 note. "This share loss appears at risk of accelerating given 1) Amazon's bigger push into fashion, and 2) consumer willingness/acceptance to shop fashion through Amazon."

The 11 best reasons to buy a Nintendo Switch

$
0
0

The new hybrid video-game console from Nintendo has been out for several months now, and it's off to a strong start: The Switch is already Nintendo's fastest-selling game console.

Nintendo Switch

Like so many things, its success comes as a surprise to experts in the field — the $299 console isn't very competitive on paper, and it wasn't a guaranteed success in concept:

  • It's underpowered compared with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, both of which cost less.
  • It has a paltry game library compared with the competition.
  • Because of its lack of horsepower, major games released on multiple platforms — think "Assassin's Creed,""Call of Duty,""Grand Theft Auto," etc. — won't ever come to the Switch.

But using the Switch is a surprising delight. I've had the Switch for four months, and it has quickly become a part of my daily life for several reasons.

SEE ALSO: Nintendo's new console is having an incredible run, and the future looks even brighter

1. The Nintendo Switch is remarkably fast, which is more important than you'd think.

Using the Switch feels blessedly modern.

Unlike the often sludgy experience on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, powering up and using the Switch is quick and easy. At any moment in a game, you can push the console's home button and immediately exit to the dashboard. This concept also exists on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but it's far quicker and more seamless on the Switch.

Frankly speaking, it doesn't feel like a technological downgrade from the smartphone in my pocket. Even the user interface is clean and efficient — no digging through submenus to turn off Wi-Fi or see how much storage I'm using. It's this kind of "quality of life" stuff that makes using the Switch intuitive and accessible to pretty much any user.

2. Sleep Mode turns the Switch into a game console that's quickly accessible.

A major reason people are inclined to play games on their phones is ease of use. A phone is already in your pocket and takes just a second to wake up, which lets you get in and out of apps and games quickly. The Switch takes this concept to heart with Sleep Mode, which enables the console to operate like, say, a laptop or a tablet.

Rather than turning the console all the way off, you can enter Sleep Mode: a low-power mode that enables the console to be quickly accessed later, comparable to reopening a laptop screen. No restarting the game — you're back exactly where you left off.

Though there are comparable functions on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the Switch pulls it off much more cleanly — a nod to the portability of the console.

3. Jumping into games, in general, is surprisingly fast.

I've been taking a ton of screenshots on the Switch, and getting them off the Switch requires removing the microSD card I've inserted. And every time I remove the microSD card, I have to power the Switch all the way down. Bummer!

Thankfully, restarting the Switch — even a "cold boot," as it's known — is remarkably quick. I just tested: It takes roughly 10 seconds from all the way off to the main menu. I'd bet any amount of money that it's faster than the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

This quickness is due partially to the design of the hardware itself and partially to the medium used for games: cartridges. In both instances, Nintendo smartly prioritized the consumer experience — and it makes a difference in daily use.

Finding a college that offers rigorous coursework at an affordable price which yields a competitive future earnings is hard enough. Add close proximity to the beach, and your options are limited.

Money.com did just that, and pegged the best US colleges for people who love the beach.

The ranking started out with the same analysis of colleges as the main list "The best colleges for your money," evaluating them on 27 factors within three broad categories: educational quality, affordability, and alumni success. Money.com analyzed data on student loans and median career earnings on students with business majors five years after graduation. See the full methodology here.

The site then whittled the list to just those with easy beach access, setting parameters that only five schools from one state (sorry, California) and one school per city could make the list.

New York City has transformed dramatically in the last century.

Andrew Farris, a photographer from Vancouver, documents this evolution by snapping photos in 2017 at spots that he's also found in archive photos. He then meshes the archive images with his photos to create mesmerizing GIFs.

Farris has shot photos in more than 25 cities around the world, including Glasgow, Berlin, and London. One of his newest series is photos from locations around New York City, like Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Flatiron.

"New York is unlike any other city in the world as it pioneered the science and engineering of skyscrapers over a century ago, and few cities anywhere else caught up until the mid to late 20th century," Farris told Business Insider. "While preserving this heritage, the city has maintained its lead as a place for cutting edge design."

A psychologist 'diagnosed' Game of Thrones characters as if they were his patients — here's what he came up with

$

joffrey

Is Joffrey a psychopath? Why is Ramsay Bolton so mean?

Westeros doesn't seem to have psychologists to answer these questions, but thankfully the real world does.

Dr. Kirk Honda is a licensed marriage and family therapist who hosts a podcast called Psychology in Seattle. On the show, he's "diagnosed" a few Game of Thrones villains as if they were patients on his office couch.

Of course, no psychologist or psychiatrist can actually diagnose anyone, real or fictional, without meeting them. But Honda took his best shot anyway.

You can listen to everything Honda had to say about each character in his podcast, available here, but he also agreed to provide Business Insider with a short summary of five characters' diagnoses.

Ramsay Bolton: Sexual sadism disorder, sadistic personality disorder, and anti-social personality disorder/psychopathy

"In my opinion, Ramsay has sexual sadism disorder along with sadistic personality disorder...since he demonstrates marked pleasure and complete lack of remorse from the suffering of others," Honda told Business Insider.

Honda dubbed Ramsay the most problematic character in the show, due to his "tremendous pleasure in harming others," even when that sadistic behavior doesn't benefit him in the long run.

"Anti-social or psychopathic [personality disorders]... are both related to sadism and its sub-category, sexual sadism," Honda explained, adding that the two are "slightly different but largely overlapping."

He added that Ramsay's disorders are likely due to "his biological inheritance from Roose Bolton, who also exhibited significant psychopathic behavior, particularly before Ramsay was born, and Ramsay’s difficult childhood."

Listen to the full podcast

Joffrey Baratheon: Conduct Disorder and Sadistic Personality Disorder

Honda believes Joffrey suffers from a specific form of sadistic personality disorder called tyrannical sadism, due to his habit of relishing in "verbally and physically harming and abusing others with his power."

But Honda hesitated to apply too many labels to Joffrey because personality disorders in minors are usually not diagnosed until they become adults and their personalities finish forming. For that reason, Honda diagnosed Joffrey with conduct disorder "because he exhibits a pattern of violating the rights of others."

Honda believes Joffrey's disorder stems from "abuse from his father, distant mother, trauma from parental conflict and violence, looking like a girl and being teased — a detail that's in the books — inbreeding, mother drinking while pregnant, being told he’s better than others, and poor parenting."

Listen to the full podcast

Cersei Lannister: Anti-social Personality Disorder/Psychopathy

Cersei's diagnosis isn't as straightforward as the others, Honda said, because of her position as a female in a highly patriarchal society. Cersei was marginalized and abused by her father and husband when she was younger, and "is surrounded by a context that values power, specifically royal power, so her psychopathic behavior could be a result of circumstances and culture, rather than personality," he said.

Unlike Joffrey and Ramsay, most of Cersei's anti-social acts are "instrumental in gaining power and could be considered acts of survival, from her perspective."

Honda believes Cersei may also have alcohol dependence issues, though she doesn't seem to experience any ill effects from her heavy drinking (a criterion for the disorder).

"In my opinion, she seems to drink to cope with the stress of her life, which is tremendous. It’s common for people to self-medicate in this way," Honda said.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones" season six.

The "Game of Thrones" season six finale was explosive, dark, and satisfying in many ways — but it still left us with some burning questions about what's ahead on season seven.

From the order of succession in Westeros to where Jon Snow is keeping his direwolf Ghost, these are the things INSIDER really hopes "Game of Thrones" season seven answers.

Will Daenerys choose a husband when she gets to Westeros?

Daenerys hinted to Daario that she may want to take a husband to form alliances when in Westeros. Fans seem keen on a Daenerys-and-Jon pairing. But now that we know they're officially related, is that something that we really want?

Yara and Daenerys also had a flirtatious scene on season six, and some fans were intrigued by the prospect of seeing them get together. Though we doubt this will happen, their queenly banter will be interesting to watch on season seven.

Do dragons get tired?

Daenerys is finally heading off to Westeros. While she and her army are sailing on ships, her trio of dragons are in flight. But can a dragon fly all the way from Meereen to Westeros without needing to take a break?

It could take weeks for Daenerys' fleet to arrive, so what do the dragons do to rest? Surely, they're not sleeping on those ships!

Will Cersei set off the rest of the wildfire? Is there more wildfire?

We know Cersei used a lot of the hidden caches of wildfire to blow up the Great Sept of Baelor on the season six finale, but surely she kept some wildfire at bay for a rainy day?

According to Jaime, there was wildfire hidden practically everywhere in King's Landing, including beneath the Red Keep itself. We're not sure why the explosion at the sept didn't start a chain reaction.

If the wildfire is gone, she probably has the Alchemists' Guild at her fingertips to prep some more if needed.

A tech exec shares 4 steps to find and keep the people everyone else wants

Doug Gray Indeed

In our increasingly tech-dominated economy, certain occupations are more in-demand than ever.

That's why companies have got to be smart about recruiting for tech. There's plenty of competition out there when it comes to snagging the best workers.

Doug Gray, senior vice president of engineering at Indeed, has several key pillars of recruiting stellar programmers, engineers, and other tech workers.

These principles also double as strategies for subsequently retaining said top talent:

DON'T MISS: A tech exec explains why he doesn't care about your alma mater and your past jobs

1. Promote ownership

Does the job candidate take ownership of their past projects and display passion and emotional investment in what they've worked on in the past? If so, that's a good sign.

In order to attract and retain the best talent, tech companies should also encourage a culture of ownership.

"People want to be able to control their own destiny," Gray tells Business Insider. "They want to be able to say, 'The things that I think matter, actually matter.'"

Gray says that a good number of companies make the mistake of treating their software engineers like machines, instead of encouraging them to take ownership of their work.

He says the mentality is too often: "Go build me that program. Don't worry about what it's supposed to do and why it matters. Just build it."

"That's very frustrating," Gray says.

2. Foster intellectual challenge

Gray says that many of the best tech workers go into the field because they like solving puzzles.

"They like that experience of actually being frustrated — and then there's this magical moment where you've figured out how to do it," he says.

Candidates who can point out a time that they earnestly pursued some sort of professional challenge are often keepers. However, if you want them to stick around, you need to give them the space to continue to pursue complex issues.

"If you're not growing, trying new things, and getting into the 'discomfort zone' at some level, then your people will feel like they are stagnating," Gray says. "Are you offering your people at every level the opportunity for intellectual challenge?"

3. Encourage development

Of course, hiring candidates with impressive technical skills is a must. However, if you want to retain them in the long run, you must be sure that your organization is fostering a culture of professional growth and development.

Gray says that adopting cutting edge technologies and helping your workers stay attuned to new skills, languages, and programs is crucial for retainment.

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

cat hairball 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Hairballs are inevitable for cats, and if your feline is extra fluffy, it may be a chronic problem. Luckily, there are plenty of great hairball remedies, medicines, and prevention tools out there. Our top pick is Tomlyn Tuna Flavor Laxatone Gel, which gently lubricates your cat’s digestive tract to relieve hairball-related constipation and to prevent the formation of hairballs in the future.

Cats are notorious for keeping themselves clean, spending hours every day grooming their own coats. In the process of grooming, however, cats ingest a significant amount of their own hair, which can complicate their digestion. Hair doesn’t pass easily through a cat’s digestive system so, while some of the ingested hair is expelled in the stool, the rest of it forms a dense hairball that must be vomited up.

It is completely normal for a cat to have occasional hairballs. If they occur frequently, however, it could cause a dangerous blockage in the digestive tract. Brushing your cat on a regular basis will help to reduce hairballs and keeping him properly hydrated is important for healthy digestion. If these things aren’t enough, however, you might need to consider an alternative remedy.

Remedies for hairballs come in a variety of different forms from high-fiber foods to gels and pastes. Because there are so many options out there, it can be difficult to make a choice. Fortunately for you, we’ve done the work in researching the different hairball remedies and we’ve scoured the reviews to bring you our top picks for hairball remedies including hairball control food, supplements, and lubricant gels, and treats.

Quentin Tarantino has a new movie in the works — here are his other films, ranked from best to worst

Since his feature debut "Reservoir Dogs" came out in 1992, Quentin Tarantino has established himself as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time — if not always the most varied.

From "Pulp Fiction" to "Django Unchained," his style is defined by a mix of shocking violence and humor.

Tarantino is currently at the beginning stages of a new project, said to be about the Manson Family murders.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence have been approached to star. Deadline also says Tarantino has approached "Suicide Squad" star Margot Robbie to take on the role of Sharon Tate, the star who was murdered by Manson's followers.

Here is a ranking of all of Tarantino's films, starting from the worst and going to the best. But hey, even the worst ones are still pretty great:

SEE ALSO:

9. "Death Proof" (2007)

Tarantino’s worst outing as a director requires some context. “Death Proof” was one half of “Grindhouse” (the other was Robert Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror”), an experimental double feature meant to recreate the experience of the schlocky B-movies of the 1970s.

The problem with “Death Proof” is that it feels half-assed. Tarantino is so good with homage, but this still feels lazy. Tarantino’s signature long conversations don’t work for a film this short. Even with a stellar ending and a great performance from Kurt Russell, “Death Proof” feels like the first time in Tarantino’s career when he didn’t just go for it.

8. "Jackie Brown" (1997)

“Jackie Brown” had the unfortunate timing of being Tarantino’s follow-up to “Pulp Fiction.”

No matter what he did next, it was bound to not live up to monumental expectations. When “Jackie Brown” first came out in 1997, people missed one of Tarantino’s smartest and most understated movies, if not his most thrilling.

7. "Django Unchained" (2012)

“Django Unchained” is Tarantino’s most polarizing work to date, and for good reason. It asks a lot of challenging questions about slavery and whether it gives the right answers is entirely up to the viewer.

"Django" is boosted by some strong work from Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L. Jackson. Maybe the biggest thing running against it is that, at two hours and 45 minutes, it would have been much better if the filmmakers trimmed it down by about an hour.
