Vice President Mike Pence visited Texas to survey the damage wrought by Hurricane Harvey on Thursday.

After touching down in Corpus Christi, Texas, Pence expressed support for victims and promised to help the state rebuild "stronger and better than before," according to the Associated Press.

Texas endured five days of rain that flooded major cities, including Houston, with nearly 52 inches of water, a record for the continental US.

"The President sent Karen and I here today to survey the damage and ensure that the full resources of the federal government are being brought in support of the effort of state and local officials," Pence said during a press briefing, "to rescue those that are in harms way, to help communities begin to recover, and to lay a foundation to rebuild Texas in the wake of this horrific storm.

Here's a look at Pence's trip to view damage from the Texas storm:

Onboard the HMS Prince of Wales, the new £3 billion British warship that's even bigger than the HMS Queen Elizabeth

HMS Prince of Wales wide shot

The UK's largest-ever aircraft carrier is nearing completion.

HMS Prince of Wales, the second of two Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, is currently undergoing construction at Rosyth Dockyard in Scotland.

It is expected to weigh 68,000 tonnes — 3,000 tonnes heavier than its sister ship HMS Queen Elizabeth — due to extra fittings on the ship, the Press Association reported.

The warship is preparing for its official naming ceremony next week, and will begin operations in 2019, the Royal Navy said. It will be ready for frontline duties around the world from 2023 onwards, it added.

Take a look at the photos below to see the mega-ship:

Welcome onboard the (not-yet-complete) HMS Prince of Wales, Britain's next aircraft carrier.

It's the second of two Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers built in the UK. HMS Prince of Wales and its sister ship, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, are the largest and most powerful surface warships ever built for the Royal Navy.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth, which embarked on its maiden trial this summer, is longer than the Houses of Parliament and taller than the Niagara Falls.

It's currently being fitted at Rosyth Dockyard, near Edinburgh, Scotland.

Construction of the megaship started in 2011 and will cost about £3 billion ($3.9 billion).

The gigantic cost of building the Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales — £6.2 billion — faced criticism amid the country's mounting defence budget.

The Royal Navy initially said in 2007 that the two ships would cost £3.5 billion to build, only to revise the figure to £6.2 billion three years later.

The top 36 TV shows you should watch this fall

stranger things season 2

"Game of Thrones" is over, and it ended its seventh season just in time for fall TV to overwhelm you.

There's a lot of TV, and definitely not enough time to get around to all of it.

So we put together a handy guide to the fall 2017 TV shows that you should watch, from new shows to returning ones.

While the schedule looks most promising for returning shows, there are some exciting exceptions for new ones including a "Dynasty" reboot on The CW, and a new serial killer drama on Netflix from executive producer David Fincher.

Here's your guide to fall 2017 TV (arranged by date):

SEE ALSO: 34 movies you have to see this fall — including 'Justice League,' 'It,' and 'Blade Runner 2049'

"Narcos"— September 1 on Netflix

"Narcos" returns to Netflix for its third season, which will follow the rise of the Cali Cartel in the wake of Pablo Escobar’s death. Nice way to spend the last weekend of summer if you hate going outside.

"American Horror Story: Cult"— September 5 on FX

The seventh season of the anthology series is about cults, obviously. It is also kind of about the 2016 election. It stars Ryan Murphy's muse Sarah Paulson as well as Evan Peters, Cheyenne Jackson, Alison Pill, Billie Lord, Billy Eichner, and Lena Dunham.

"You're the Worst"— September 6 on FXX

The under-watched and underappreciated comedy that is sometimes a dramedy starts its fourth season. The show, about quirky and very flawed thirty-somethings in LA, has covered issues including PTSD and depression and is the most inventive, thoughtfully written show on TV right now.

Elon Musk has ambitious plans for his tunneling company — here's what we know (TSLA)

Elon Musk

Elon Musk is taking his newest venture underground.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO revealed in April his plan for the Boring Company, a new venture that is exploring a way to cut tunneling costs in order to relieve traffic congestion on roads and highways.

Details on Musk's exact plan and its feasibility are still scarce, but here's what we know so far:

Musk aims to build an underground network of tunnels where cars and trains could travel at super high-speeds.

Musk said on Twitter in December that he wanted to build a tunnel boring machine because LA traffic was driving him "nuts."

Los Angeles has the worst traffic of all the cities in the US, so Musk's frustrations aren't unique to him.

In February, Musk fleshed out his plan in a Bloomberg profile. He said the company's ultimate goal is to build an underground network that "includes as many as 30 levels of tunnels for cars and high-speed trains such as the Hyperloop."

The Boring Company is currently testing a tunnel boring machine that was used for a sewer project in Sunnydale, California. The ultimate goals is to use the machine, named Godot, to learn how tunneling technology can be altered to dig tunnels faster and at a lower cost.

Source: Boring Company tunnel presentation, courtesy of Electrek.

The Boring Company is looking to cut down costs by building a machine that can dig and place reinforcements in the wall at the same time, Musk said in April. Tunneling machines traditionally dig for half the time and then go back to add reinforcements, a longer and costlier process.

Godot has successfully dug a tunnel on SpaceX's parking lot at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Rocket Road in Los Angeles.

The Boring Company was recently granted approval to extend the tunnel two miles beyond SpaceX's parking lot. That means the tunnel will continue under the city of Hawthorne.

The tunnel can only be used for research and development. Once the Boring Company has completed its tests, the city of Hawthorne can request that the Boring Company fill the tunnel back up with soil.

The cost difference between Melania Trump and Michelle Obama's outfits reveals the truth about America's criticisms of them

First Lady Inauguration

This week, Melania Trump found herself in yet another fashion scandal.

The first lady was spotted boarding a plane to Texas in sky-high stilettos, despite the fact that she was heading to an area devastated by Hurricane Harvey.

Public perception of Trump and the previous first lady, Michelle Obama, couldn't be more different. Fans of Obama paint her as a J. Crew-clad woman of the people. Meanwhile, Trump was slammed for a photoshoot in which she twirled a string of diamonds like spaghetti.

For fans of Trump, glitzy designer clothing is part of her appeal. Instagrams with thousands of followers track her every outfit. Far-right website Breitbart (which criticized Obama for wearing a $2,290 dress to meet the pope in 2015) wrote Trump was the "breakout star" of President Trump's first trip abroad, radiating "high fashion."

In an effort to see how accurate Trump's frivolous, filthy-rich reputation is in contrast to Obama's more down-to-earth image, we decided to recreate a theoretical "week in the life" of the two first ladies. We wanted to see if Trump was actually spending more than Obama, or if she was just a victim of bad press.

We compared seven iconic looks that Obama and Trump wore to similar events, from vacationing to campaigning, as well as their price tags. Here's how the two first ladies measure up and what it means for how Americans see them.

SEE ALSO: Melania Trump wore a coat that costs more than most Americans earn in a year

Campaigning at political conventions

Melania at the RNC: $2,190 Roksanda dress and $675 Christian Louboutin heels

Trump made headlines after buying a Roksanda "Margot" dress herself from Net-a-Porter. The $2,190 dress sold out less than an hour after her speech.

She paired the dress with $675 nude Christian Louboutin heels.

Michelle at the DNC: $995 dress by Christian Siriano and $675 metallic Jimmy Choo heels

Obama's blue dress was extremely similar to a $995 cobalt blue dress made by Christian Siriano, a designer that rose to prominence after appearing on "Project Runway." However, Siriano reportedly custom-made the dress that the then-first lady wore as she gave her "they go low, we go high" speech.

Her silver Jimmy Choos heels, spotted by Footwear News, cost $675.

Meeting with foreign leaders

Melania at the G-7 Summit: $53,130 Dolce & Gabbana outfit

Trump made headlines when she wore a $51,500 Dolce & Gabbana jacket to a meeting with the spouses of some of the most powerful world leaders at the annual G-7 summit in Catania, Italy in May. While we couldn't identify the first lady's dress and shoes, her bag was also Dolce & Gabbana and costs $1,630.

The first lady has worn Dolce & Gabbana on numerous occassions. Designer Stefano Gabbana has been extremely receptive of the support, posting many pictures of Trump in Dolce & Gabbana outfits on his Instagram.

Michelle at the G-20 Summit: $474 J. Crew outfit

Obama made headlines on her first trip to the United Kingdom as FLOTUS in 2009, thanks to her casual yet fashionable looks. The Guardian described her outfits, many of which were purchased from J. Crew, as "a pitch of sunny, homely optimism, rather than sparkling glamour."

One of Obama's most memorable outfits of the trip was the one she wore to meet British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Fox News reported that the cardigan cost $298, tank top $18, and a mint green pencil skirt was priced at $158.

Charity work

Melania at an abuse prevention nonprofit: $1,150 pair of sandals to complete an otherwise low-key look

Footwear News reported (somewhat snarkily) that Trump wore a $1,150 pair of Rene Caovilla sandals to visit HomeSafe in April. Trump also wore a $225 pair of L'Agence Margot jeans and an unidentified khaki shirt.

Michelle at a food bank: $540 pair of sneakers to complete an otherwise low-key look

In 2009, Obama caused some controversy when she wore a $540 pair of Lanvin sneakers to volunteer at a food bank with Second Lady Jill Biden. She paired the sneakers with a $188 J. Crew sweater.

The most controversial moments of Sean Spicer's wild ride as Trump's press secretary

sean spicer

Sean Spicer officially departed the White House on Thursday, one month after announcing his resignation as President Donald Trump's press secretary.

As the buffer between the press and Trump, Spicer had a challenging job — one that he made even more difficult with repeated blunders and controversies.

Here are some of the biggest controversies to take place since Spicer took over the role of the official White House press secretary on January 20.

SEE ALSO: Jerry Springer is getting closer to a decision about running for governor in Ohio

Spicer's role started off to a rocky start when, two days after Trump's inauguration, when he declared Trump had "the largest audience to witness an inauguration, period."

Despite photos of the event showing a crowd much sparser than former President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration, Spicer insisted that no other president attracted a bigger crowd of visitors and fought with reporters who challenged his assertion.

Spicer repeatedly went back and forth on whether Trump's decision to block people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US was indeed "a ban."

Even though Trump himself tweeted about the travel ban, Spicer insisted that it "can't be a ban" and should instead be called "extreme vetting."

During his time as press secretary, Spicer became known for repeatedly sparring with reporters — such as when he told one journalist to "calm down" and another one to stop shaking her head.

"Calm down," Spicer once told a journalist who was asking him questions about Trump's claims of wiretapping during the 2016 elections.

The best charging stations and USB charging hubs

$

0

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

charging hub 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Don't fight over outlets — get a charging station to juice up all your devices at once. Of all the charging stations and USB hubs out there, the Satechi Charging Station is the best one for most people with its ability to quickly charge seven devices.

If you have a lot of devices or a big family, charging everything up each day can get out of hand real quick. You end up with tangled cords, arguments over who's been hogging all the outlets, and worse, devices that remain uncharged because someone unplugged them. There's only one way to end the pain, and it's not chucking your gadgets out the window. You need a charging station or a USB charging hub.

Charging stations and hubs come in all shapes and sizes. While most of them look like a mini power strip or battery pack with multiple USB charging ports, others take the shape of attractive docks, storage units, or device organizers. We've included different options to suit different needs and device charging specifications, so whether you have an iPhone and an Apple Watch, a Quick Charge Android phone, or a USB-C Android phone; we've got you covered.

As someone who reviewed mobile devices for five years, I've used a lot of different charging solutions to juice up all the gadgets that land on my desk. Some of them are invariably better than others, but these are the best ones. In addition to personal experience, these picks are based on expert and buyer reviews across the web. Read on to check out the best charging stations and USB hubs you can buy.

Although the Satechi 7-Port USB Charging Station Dock is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Belkin PowerHouse Charge Dock, the Anker Quick Charge 3.0 63W 5-Port USB Wall Charger, the Vogek 6-Port USB Charger Desktop Charging Station, and the bamboo FLECK 5-Port Fast USB Charging Station.

SEE ALSO: The best battery packs you can buy

The best charging station overall

Why you'll love it: The Satechi 7-Port USB Charging Station Dock charges seven devices at once and holds them in place while they juice up.

Anyone who lives in a crowded household needs a charging station with a lot of ports, and the Satechi 7-Port USB Charging Station Dock fits the bill perfectly.

You get seven USB Ports, three of which are Quick Charge compatible, charging at rates of 2.4A and four of which charge at the standard 1A. Each port has surge protection, so you don't have to worry about your device getting fried by too much electricity.

The cables are not included, contrary to what you see in the product images on Amazon, so you have to buy your own cables. We recommend buying short 6-inch cords, so you don't have to wrap up the excess cordage. You should always getApple MFI certified lightning cables and safe USB- C and micro USB cables(<— click on the links to get the best ones). If you already have cables and they're long ones, you can use the velcro straps Satechi includes with the charging station for cable management.

The charging station itself is sturdy and simple. It has seven slots with anti-scratch silicone pads that hold your devices in an upright position while they charge. Satechi's charging station measures just 7.4 x 5.5-inches, so it shouldn't take up too much space on your desk, shelf, or countertop.

To use it, you simply plug the USB end of the cords into the side of the charging station, set your device on its side with the charging port facing the cable, and plug it in to charge. It's a brilliant, simple solution that prevents tangled cables and clogged outlets. The charging station plugs right into the wall, taking up only one outlet to charge up to seven devices at a time.

Buyers on Amazon generally love the Satechi charging station, but some say that the spacing between dividers is too narrow for devices wearing thicker cases. Others point out that it's not the most beautiful thing to have on the counter, especially is you have long cords. However, most buyers still say it gets the job done and works very well.

Pros: Charges seven devices at once, holds gadgets in place, includes short cords for charging without tangled wires, affordable

Cons: Basic design, cables not included

Buy the Satechi 7-Port USB Charging Station Dock on Amazon for $49.99 (originally $59.99)

The best charging station for iPhone and Apple Watch

Why you'll love it: The Belkin PowerHouse Charge Dock juices up both your Apple Watch and iPhone at the same time.

The Belkin PowerHouse Charge Dock for Apple Watch and iPhone sat on my nightstand for several months while I was using an iPhone and Apple Watch every day. It looked gorgeous and got the job done without cluttering up my bedroom with wires and ugly chargers.

If you have an iPhone and an Apple Watch, this is the dock you want. It's less pricey than most dual iPhone and Apple Watch docks, but it has a lightning connector and an Apple Watch charging disc built into the design so you don't have any extra wires. you simply plug the Belkin dock in and pop your phone and watch in the dock to charge both up simultaneously.

The only real downside to the dock is that you can only charge one iPhone and Apple Watch at a time, so if the rest of your family wants to juice up, they'll have to go elsewhere. It's also expensive in comparison with the other charging stations in our guide, but that's the price you pay for good looks and concealed cords.

Pros: Great for iPhone and Apple Watch, attractive design, sturdy, built-in lightning and Apple Watch charging connectors eliminate wires

Cons: Only charges one iPhone and one Apple Watch at a time, expensive

Buy the Belkin PowerHouse Charge Dock for Apple Watch and iPhone on Amazon for $89.99 (originally $99.99)

The best charging station for Quick Charge devices

Why you'll love it: The Anker Quick Charge 3.0 63W 5-Port USB Wall Charger can juice up five devices simultaneously in record time.

If you have Android phones in your house, chances are many of them have Quick Charge technology that allows them to juice up faster. The Anker Quick Charge 3.0 63W 5-Port USB Wall Charger will charge your devices at the fastest rate possible, so you can get moving more quickly.

You simply plug the power source into the wall, pop in your charging cables, and plug in up to five devices at a time to charge. The hub is a simple rectangle that looks like a small battery pack. It may not be the most beautiful thing you've ever seen, but it gets the job done and takes up very little space.

Unless you want to have lots of long cords around, we recommend getting shorter cables that are between 6-inches and 1-foot in length. You should always get Apple MFI certified lightning cables and safe USB- C and micro USB cables (<— click on the links to get the best ones).

Anker offers an 18-month warranty and customer service if you run into any problems. Buyers on Amazon are very enthusiastic about this charger, mainly because it actually meets Quick Charge 3.0 charging speeds. It's also quite affordable.

Pros: Five USB ports, Quick Charge 3.0 compatible, simple, affordable

Cons: Not that attractive, you need your own cords

Buy the Anker Quick Charge 3.0 63W 5-Port USB Wall Charger on Amazon for $30.99 (originally $89.99)

7 underdog picks to win the Heisman this college football season

Trace McSorley

Every year the Heisman Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding player in college football, and every year people are quick to deem one player the favorite to win the award before a snap of football has been played.

This year, the de facto favorite for the award is USC quarterback Sam Darnold. The distinction is well-deserved — Darnold leads a potent offense with poise, and showed in the Rose Bowl last year that he has what it takes to perform his best under the brightest lights.

But there are other candidates for the award who should not go overlooked, as Heisman winners have a habit of coming out of nowhere to win the award.

Below we are taking a look at a few players with longer odds to win the Heisman who could potentially string together a special season that leaves them posing at the end of the year. Sam Darnold, Saquon Barkley, and Baker Mayfield are the three biggest favorites to take home the Heisman, but there's plenty of talented options further down the betting sheet as well.

Below are your best underdog bets to come home with the Heisman this year. All odds courtesy of the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

SEE ALSO: 'I just don’t think the game is safe for the brain' — ESPN college football analyst quits over concern for players' safety

Deondre Francois, 15/1

Who he is: Sophomore quarterback at Florida State coming off an impressive freshman season.

Why he can win: Last season Francois showed a poise you don't normally expect out of a true freshman under center. As the Seminoles quarterback, he's likely to draw comparisons to Jameis Winston, but he also has some of the agility that helped Lamar Jackson take home the trophy last year. With an early test against Bama and a head-to-head matchup with Jackson due in October, Francois will have ample opportunity to show Heisman voters just what he is capable of.

Key games: Alabama (9/2), Louisville (10/21), Clemson (11/11)

Jake Browning, 18/1

Who he is: Washington's Junior quarterback entering his third year under center for the Huskies.

Why he can win: Washington made the playoff last year thanks to Browning's passing and a defense that could hang with the best of them. To compete in the Pac-12 again, the Huskies are going to have to be gunslingers, and Browning has all the tools necessary to light up the stat sheet. Last year he finished with 3,430 passing yards, 43 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. If he can improve on those numbers and lead the Huskies to the Pac-12 title game, winning the Heisman doesn't seem like a stretch.

Key games: Colorado (9/23), Oregon (11/4), Stanford (11/11)

Bo Scarbrough, 30/1

Who he is: Junior running back at Alabama who ran for 270 yards and four touchdowns during the Crimson Tide's two games in the playoff last year.

Why he can win: Two basic aspects of becoming a Heisman finalist is getting on national television and looking good when you do. Alabama is a marquee game every week, and Scarbrough will be a feature of the Crimson Tide's pro-style offensive attack this year. Break enough big runs in the right spots and he'll be in the conversation.

Key games: Florida State (9/2), LSU (11/4), Auburn (11/25)

Women party alcohol fun weekend

We're heading into Labor Day weekend.

That means you most likely have an extra day off to add to your normal weekend.

But how should you spend that extra time?

If you're not sure how to make the most of the next 72 hours, we've got some ideas.

Here are 17 things successful people do before and over three-day weekends:

SEE ALSO: 11 things unsuccessful people do over long weekends

DON'T MISS: 14 sleeping habits of unsuccessful people

1. They plan ahead

Many successful people plan out their activities for the holiday weekend well in advance so that they are not drawn into the temptation of working, says Michael Kerr, an international business speaker and author of "The Humor Advantage." They make reservations, book tee times, or schedule activities with their kids.

"They're strategic enough to have an action plan for the three-day weekend, but flexible enough to tackle any urgent work issues that may arise," says Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of "Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job."

2. They prepare at work

"Most of what they do happens before they leave for a long weekend so that they are psychologically free to relax and enjoy it," Kerr says.

This includes saying proper goodbyes to colleagues, cleaning up their office, finishing any pressing tasks, and creating a clear plan of action for when they return to the office so they can hit the ground running.

3. They unplug

Not only do they set guidelines, but truly successful people actually put their phones and laptops away — at least for part of the weekend.

Don't sit and stare at screens during your time off. Unplug and try to use as little technology as possible. It will help you sleep better and can keep your mind clear.

The foods that are the most likely to make you sick, according to the CDC

turkey sandwich

Every year, one in 6 Americans gets sick from contaminated food — but the most common culprits may surprise you. Raw meat and shellfish are obvious risks, but fresh vegetables and fruits can pose problems of their own.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention keeps track of the foods that make people sick. Using a decade of outbreak data, CDC epidemiologist John Painter was able to determine the most common sources of illness. These ranged from the mild, such as minor diarrhea and upset stomach, to the serious, when foodborne illnesses turned deadly.

SEE ALSO: 11 things people think are terrible for your diet that actually aren't

DON'T MISS: One type of diet is the best for your body and brain — but a lot of people are doing it wrong

Spinach — can make you sick when contaminated and eaten raw

Nearly half of all foodborne illnesses the CDC recorded in its report were caused by produce. Of those illnesses, the vast majority (22%) were linked to leafy vegetables like spinach, making leafy greens the most dangerous commodity of all of the food categories the CDC explored.

Since fruits and veggies are frequently consumed raw, any harmful bacteria introduced to the produce at any time during production could make you sick. Contaminated spinach typically harbors norovirus — the common stomach bug linked with vomiting and diarrhea — and sometimes carries E. coli as well.

Rinsing or washing your produce is a healthy protective step, but this merely decreases the possibility of contamination — it's not a fail-safe, according to the CDC.

Chicken and poultry — problems in production have been linked to serious infections

More deaths documented in the CDC's report were attributed to chicken and turkey than to any other food.

Part of the reason poultry got such a bad rap has to do with three large listeriosis outbreaks traced to turkey deli meat that occurred between 1998 and 2002. Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by Listeria bacteria; its symptoms can range from fever and diarrhea to stiff neck, headache, and confusion. Pregnant women, children, and the elderly are the most at risk.

Still, it's important to recognize that, just as it did with unpasteurized juices following several illness outbreaks, the FDA issued new regulatory standards aimed at increasing the safety of deli meat in the years following the listeriosis outbreaks.

Sprouts — the moist environment they're grown in can breed bacteria

The moist conditions in which sprouts are grown are also the perfect environment for bacteria — especially Salmonellawhich can cause diarrhea, fever, and painful stomach cramps. Of particular concern are contaminated seeds.

"A few bacteria present on the seeds can grow to high numbers of pathogens on the sprouts," the CDC wrote on its food safety page.

Texans in Harvey's path will face health risks from mold, insects, and bacteria for months to come

harvey flood houston rescue evacuation

Tropical Storm Harvey may be on the move — but its after-effects are just beginning to be realized.

In under a week, the storm unleashed as much as 51 inches of water in some areas, causing catastrophic flooding that displaced 33,000 Texans. At least 41 people have died since the storm began, and officials expect the toll to rise.

People in flooded areas quickly found themselves face-to-face with a range of health problems, including contaminated floodwaters and the threat of injury.

Although the skies have begun to clear, the problems are far from over. See what people in affected areas are up against for the next several months:

SEE ALSO: Health officials are warning Texans to stay out of Harvey floodwaters for a disturbing reason

DON'T MISS: Heartbreaking photos show Houston's devastating flooding from the sky

Mosquitoes gather near standing floodwaters, spreading infection.

While the storm wiped out mosquitoes from the area for now, the standing water left over from the flooding and the warm temperatures will make parts of Texas particularly prone to mosquitoes and the diseases they can carry in the coming months and year.

"As the floodwaters recede, you’re left with pockets of water which are good for breeding both Culex mosquitoes and Aedes mosquitoes," Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, told The Atlantic. That could lead to more West Nile infections, and possibly Zika. Texas has seen some local transmission of Zika in Brownsville, Texas near the Mexico border.

Chemical plants sent offline by the storm explode or burn, releasing harmful pollutants.

Explosions rocked the outskirts of Houston on Thursday at the Arkema chemical plant after flooding shut down its power and backup generators, which had been keeping explosive compounds cool via a refrigeration system.

When the refrigerators went offline, the compounds got warm and exploded. Officials said they plan to let the fire burn out, meaning more blasts are likely. But Arkema is just one of hundreds of chemical plants in the Houston area, many of which have been flooded and are now at risk of further damage.

Shuttered oil refineries release toxic chemicals as a stop-gap disposal method.

In addition to slamming homes and hospitals, Harvey struck the heart of Texas' refining industry, where roughly a third of America's oil is processed. In anticipation of the storm, dozens of processing facilities were forced to intentionally burn chemicals as a means of disposing them, releasing millions of pounds of pollutants into the air

Chevron Phillips, the company that reported the largest release, burned close to 800,000 pounds of chemicals — nearly 300,000 of which were the colorless, odorless, and potentially deadly gas carbon monoxide — as it shut down its plant to prepare for the storm.

rothys shoes flats 8038

Women from the tech offices of Silicon Valley to the streets of New York City have embraced a new status symbol:  $145 shoes that happen to be as cute as they are eco-conscious.

Rothy's, a shoe startup based in San Francisco, turns plastic water bottles into trendy ballet flats. Since its launch in 2016, the company has gained a ravenous following, including venture capitalists and the editors of Vogue. While the shoes aren't the most environmentally-friendly in existence (check out these future Adidas kicks that will be 100% biodegradable), Rothy's has diverted more than five million plastic bottles from landfills since its founding.

We stepped into the Rothy's headquarters to learn how the new status shoe came to be.

SEE ALSO: A preppy apparel startup is defying J. Crew's curse and dominating the millennial market

In 2012, Stephen Hawthornwaite and Roth Martin left their jobs in finance and design to reinvent the flat — a stylish, but not so comfortable staple of many women's wardrobes.

They saw how women were dressing down — sporting athletic apparel outside the gym — and decided to take advantage of the shift. They set out to make a women's shoe for all occasions.

Rothy's flats are stylish and comfortable — and happen to be good for the planet.

During four years of research, the pair learned there's a great deal of waste in traditional shoe manufacturing. Most shoes are made by cutting out patterns and stitching the pieces.

The best KitchenAid mixers you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

kitchenaid 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • The best KitchenAid mixers serve as an indispensable tool as you bake cakes, pies, bread, cookies, and other delicious treats. They can knead the toughest dough for long periods of time, and they are versatile enough to make pasta and sausage. The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer with Pouring Shield tops our list because it does all of these things and more.

Aside from the satisfaction of a job well done, making your own baked goods from scratch tastes better, is better for you, and it generally costs much less than buying products from the store. KitchenAid mixers make home baking a cinch.

Even if baking isn’t your thing, there are plenty of secondary uses for these mixers that make them well worth your money. If you have ever watched one of those prime-time cooking shows, you have likely noticed a KitchenAid mixer in the kitchen. They are the standard in the industry. Here are some things to consider when you are ready to ramp up your culinary experience.

Tilt head versus bowl lift

KitchenAid mixers come with a tilt head or a lever that lifts your bowl up to the mixing attachment. The one that is best for you depends on how much space you have. The lift models tend to be taller and wider, therefore they require more counter space. But, they generally perform better than the tilt-head units, which can bounce when handling larger batches of dough.

Accessories and attachments

One of the aspects of KitchenAid mixers that sets them apart from the competition is the array of optional attachments and accessories available. Most of the attachments work with any of the company's stand mixers. Here are a few of the most popular accessories:

  • Ice Cream Maker ($63.96)In 20 to 30 minutes, this attachment will make up to two quarts of gelato, sorbet, or ice cream.
  • Pasta Roller and Cutter ($134.68): Stainless steel cutters and rollers produce six-inch sheets of pasta with eight thickness settings and can be cut for fettuccine, spaghetti, and more.
  • Food Grinder ($39.00): Use this to grind dried bread, meat, vegetables, cheeses, firm fruit, and use it with the stuffer set to make sausage.
  • Food Processor ($99.99): This attachment will shred, dice, julienne, and slice any vegetables, cheeses, and fruits.

Although there are a lot of similarities between models — including high-quality construction and a one-year warranty — not all KitchenAid mixers are the same. Based on our assessment of the reviews and ratings of thousands of buyers and experts, we have come up with recommendations that will guide you in choosing the best KitchenAid mixer for your needs.

Although the KitchenAid KSM150PSER Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer with Pouring Shield is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the KitchenAid K45SSOB 4.5-Quart Classic Series Stand Mixer, the KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Series Stand Mixer, the KitchenAid KP26M1XER 6 Qt. Professional 600 Series Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer, and the KitchenAid KSM155GBSA 5-Qt. Artisan Design Series with Glass Bowl.

The best KitchenAid mixer overall

Why you'll love it: From bread dough to honey, the KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer with Pouring Shield is powerful enough to handle just about anything you throw at it.

The KitchenAid KSM150 Artisan mixer is designed for the serious home baker. It comes with a five-quart stainless steel bowl that can mix dough for four loaves of bread or nine dozen cookies in one batch. Also included are a six-wire whip, coated flat beater, one-piece pouring shield, and coated dough hook. There are 47 colors for this appliance available on Amazon, so you are sure to find an option that matches the décor of your kitchen.

Another feature of the KSM150 is the “59-point planetary mixing action.” This essentially means that for every rotation around the bowl, the dough hook, wire whip, or beater has 59 touch points for more thorough mixing.

Many of the home and kitchen appliance experts have reviewed the KSM150 Artisan mixer, and most were impressed with its power. Top Ten Reviews lists this model as the best mixer because of the solid motor, its versatility, and the color selection. The reviewer only dinged it for not having a timer, overload protection, or other more advanced features.

The Good Housekeeping Institute endorsed the KSM150 with a score of 93 out of 100 because of the broad range of speeds, ability to handle bread dough, and stylish, robust design. Foodal liked that this model comes with all you need to get started, and ranked it number one on its list.

On Amazon, there are more than 7,200 positive reviews of the Artisan mixer. Buyers like how sturdy the mixer is. It doesn’t try to walk off your counter when it’s working on a tough task. The biggest complaint was that the mixing bowl sometimes leaves a gray residue on the food you are preparing. KitchenAid recommends scrubbing your mixer bowl with baking soda or lemon and salt to remove the polishing material used on the bowl. Also, buyers complained about having trouble choosing which of the ten available shades of blue to go with for their KitchenAid.

Pros: Powerful 325-watt motor, comes with pouring shield, dozens of colors to choose from

Cons: No overload protection

Buy the KitchenAid KSM150PSER Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer with Pouring Shield on Amazon for $299

The best KitchenAid mixer on a budget

Why you'll love it: The KitchenAid K45SSOB 4.5-Quart Classic Series Stand Mixer is the ideal mixer for beginner bakers since it is affordable and can handle most mixing tasks.

KitchenAid mixers are not cheap. Yet, the K45SS is the least expensive option available. It comes with a 4.5-quart bowl, a coated dough hook, 10-speed settings powered by a 250-watt motor, a wire whip, and a coated flat beater. And, as with other KitchenAid units, it has a multi purpose attachment hub that takes more than a dozen optional attachments that can be used to make pasta, grind meat, and much more.

Since the mixer has a relatively small motor, it is one of the quietest mixers you will find. You can control the speed using a shifting knob on the side of the unit. The K45SS does not have a slow start mixing option, so if you are mixing dry ingredients, such as flour, the fast start could send ingredients flying. You can combat this with a pouring shield, which this model does not come with, but you can pick one up for less than $20 on Amazon.

All of the expert reviews we looked at for this guide were positive. Mixer Reviews liked the K45SS because its small stature made it ideal for most countertops. The site did note that you may want to splurge on one of the Professional Series models if you plan on regularly making bread or have larger mixing loads.

Ratingle rated the K45SS highly for the dependability of the 250-watt motor and quality design. Mix It Bake It echoed Mixer Reviews’ concern about using this model for heavy duty dough, like bread dough. However, the reviewer commented that it is an excellent budget mixer for light to moderate mixing tasks.

An impressive four out of five customers on Amazon gave the KitchenAid K45SS five stars. Buyers liked the versatility of this mixer and found the attractive design fit well with just about any kitchen décor. There were a couple of complaints, though. In addition to the gray residue problem mentioned in the above review, users complained that the bowl that this unit comes with does not have a handle. So, you may want to buy a replacement bowl if that bothers you.

Pros: Affordable, 10 different speed settings, tilt-up mixer head

Cons: Least powerful motor on the list

Buy the KitchenAid K45SSOB 4.5-Quart Classic Series Stand Mixer on Amazon for $207.99 and up (price varies by color)

Buy the KitchenAid KN1PS Pouring Shield on Amazon for $15.99

Buy the KitchenAid Stainless Steel Bowl K45SBWH, 4.5-Quart (with Handle) on Amazon for $31.99

The best KitchenAid mixer for making bread

Why you'll love it: With a 450-watt motor, the KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Series Stand Mixer is one of KitchenAid’s most powerful mixers.

The KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus has a ten-speed motor with a slow start function and overload protection. The mixer comes with a five-quart stainless steel mixing bowl featuring an ergonomic handle. Also, the hinged hub cover flips up to make it easier to install attachments, including the spiral dough hook, wire whip, and flat beater that it comes with. The bowl is lifted to the mixer are using a simple lever that securely stays in place.

The Professional 5 Plus is available in thirteen colors on Amazon, including Metallic Chrome, Empire Red, Cobalt Blue, and Onyx Black.

For 15 years now, I have owned and regularly used the forebear of the Professional 5 Plus: the Professional 5. The Professional 5 Plus improves upon my model with a stronger motor (450 watts versus 350 watts), overload protection, and slow start. That said, my model has done a fabulous job making cookies, cake, pie, and everything else we ask of it. In fact, I bake two loaves of bread per week, and it has never had a problem kneading the dough, even with the weaker motor.

One of the expert sites that reviewed the Professional 5 Plus was Ratingle, and the site put it among its top four KitchenAid stand mixers. The reviewer liked the flexibility afforded by the 10 speeds of the 450-watt motor. However, the site noted that this unit is quite loud when in use.

Just My Two Cents, a respected site that covers a wide variety of appliances, liked the large capacity of the mixer and how it could handle large tasks with ease. The reviewer found that what set it apart from other KitchenAid products was an overload reset button and the slow start-ups, which keep your ingredients from flying everywhere. Cooking Upgrades also appreciated the size and reset button and gave the mixer 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Some 89% of the buyers who reviewed the Professional 5 Plus on Amazon gave it a rating of four stars or higher. Buyers liked that it packs a lot of power while taking up relatively little counter space, and at 16.5 inches tall, it fits under most cabinets. Reviewers found it especially helpful for making bread, cakes, and pies.

Pros: Advanced features, ergonomic design, 67-point mixing

Cons: Heavy, loud

15 movies with completely different titles in other countries

The Mighty Ducks

"Champions" is a movie about a hotshot lawyer required to coach an underdog peewee hockey team as community service after getting arrested for drunk driving. If you think this plot is suspiciously similar to "The Mighty Ducks," you are correct.

And it's not just a low-budget Hallmark Channel remake either — it's actually the Australian title of the same movie.

Movie titles can change from country to country for many reasons, such as specific cultural references that go over people's heads or marketing ploys to get the attention of a larger audience.

Here are 15 movie title that were changed in other English-speaking markets.

SEE ALSO: 34 movies you have to see this fall — including 'Justice League,' 'It,' and 'Blade Runner 2049'

"13 Going on 30" (2004) became "Suddenly 30" in Australia.

This romantic comedy from 2004 was released as "13 Going on 30" in the United States, however the title was changed to "Suddenly 30" in Australia.

The expression that the original title uses is more commonly heard in American culture compared to Australian, and according to IMDb, it was changed to "Suddenly 30" because distributors thought audiences would misunderstand the original title.

"Airplane!" (1980) became "Flying High?" in Australia and New Zealand.

Distributors in both Australia and New Zealand changed the title of this classic comedy from "Airplane!" to "Flying High" because they thought it would be too similar to another American movie released at the same time.

"The Concorde... Airport '79" was an unrelated film to "Airplane." However, due to release delays of US films at the time, it was released in 1980 in Australia and named "Airport '80." Having "Airplane" and "Airport '80" released at the same time would have caused much confusion to moviegoers, so distributors changed the title.

"Fever Pitch" (2005) was transformed into "The Perfect Catch" in the UK.

"Fever Pitch" is actually an American adaptation of a 1997 British movie with the same name starring Colin Firth. The British movie was about soccer, and the American version adapted it to baseball.

Distributors in the UK changed the movie title to "The Perfect Catch" to separate it from the original 1997 movie. Australia and New Zealand used the UK title.
