Aspen CO 3

Hotel mogul Ed Scheetz is looking to sell his duplex penthouse in the Soho neighborhood of New York for $15.93 million.

Scheetz reportedly purchased the property for $10 million in 2008, soon after the overdosing death of his then-girlfriend. Scheetz was sued by the family of the woman, and the case was settled privately in 2010. Scheetz has worked on the Chelsea Hotels in New York and the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, and he was formerly the CEO of Morgans Hotel Group.

First listed for $18 million in Feburary 2016 and now priced at $2 million less, the home comes complete with two bedrooms and 2,000 square feet of outdoor space. It's listed with Lori Shabtai of Town Residential.

Starbucks Barista

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Baristas often deal with rude or underinformed clientele.
  • They vented about the most annoying things customers do in a Reddit thread.
  • The list includes being glued to their phones and asking for free water.

Baristas are trained to meet the needs of caffeine-deprived customers, but sometimes those needs are a bit ridiculous.

We combed through a Reddit thread where Starbucks baristas vented about their most irritating customer encounters.

Here are nine things that you should avoid doing next time you order coffee.

Getting upset about a drink that isn't yours

"A bother of mine is when a customer screeches, 'I said no whip!' for a drink that is not even theirs."— Reddit user baileythedove

Ordering while on your phone

"Pretty much anything a customer says while ordering while also still on their phone. Drives me crazy and is really rude."— Reddit user mjz348

Missing your drink while looking at your phone

"My favorite is to place customers drinks/food directly in front of them and try to get their attention while they are on their phone. Walk away and then when they are looking around wondering why they haven't gotten their drink/food yet and I just point directly in front of them. Sooooo satisfying."— Reddit user Dead_Inside_Barista

The best trail running shoes for men

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

trail shoes 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Trail running shoes keep your feet protected against the rocks, roots, and ever-changing terrain you'll find on those backwoods jogs, giving you the traction and support you need to log the distance. The Columbia Conspiracy Titanium OutDry trail runners are our top pick because they're comfortable the first time you slip them on and durable enough to last for hundreds of miles.

I know you're thinking about it, so let's start with the most common question: What is the difference between trail running shoes and hiking shoes? The primary difference is simple. Hiking shoes are designed for use while you're carrying a pack and covering long distances, while trail runners are ideal for the unladen user out for a few hours at a time. The presumed user of a hiking shoe has weight on his or her back and will be logging many miles over the course of multiple consecutive days. Hiking shoes tend to be heavier than trail runners due to added cushioning in the sole and the extra support needed to prevent a rolled ankle, exacerbated by pack weight and/or the rugged terrain that comes with trekking both off the trail.

OK, now what's the difference between a trail running shoe and a running shoe more generally? There are two design elements that separate trail runners from road running shoes: The type of traction and the sole thickness (e.g. level of cushioning). On paved roads, sidewalks, or other prepared surfaces, you don't really need much additional traction, and you can generally count on a consistency of terrain, thus there's no need for extreme tread patterns or extra cushioning. Out on the trail, however, one step might fall on hard packed dirt while the next might see you cruising over a scree field filled with loose stones and fallen brambles.

The traction and cushioning offered by a good trail running shoe keep you prepared to meet and conquer all sorts of ground and in myriad weather conditions. They weigh a bit more than regular running shoes, so when you're training for the Boston Marathon, stick with road shoes. They don't necessarily offer the proper support for the hiker carrying a 50-pound pack and enduring the heel strikes of a granite boulder field, either. That's why hiking boots are a thing.

But for the runner out for a morning run on the mountain trails, trail running shoes are the ideal footwear. Go ahead and use them for any casual hike, too. They can handle it. And so can you. Read on to see which of our top picks are best for your needs.

Although the Columbia Conspiracy Titanium Trail Running Shoe is our top pick, for the reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the ASICS GEL Venture 5 Trail Running Shoe, the Salomon Speedcross 3 Trail Running Shoe, the New Balance Minimus Trail 10v1 Trail Running Shoe, and the Tesla Bare Trek BK31 Minimalist Barefoot Trail Running Shoe.

The best trail running shoes overall

Why you'll love them: The Columbia Conspiracy Titanium OutDry Trail Running Shoes will be comfortable the very first time you slip them on and they're rugged enough to last for miles without getting wet or worn down.

In the good ol' spirit of full disclosure, I should tell you that don't own a pair of Columbia Conspiracy Titanium OutDry trail running shoes ... I have two pairs. One got worn down thanks to heavy use, but I couldn't part with them, so now they're my lawn mowing and general muck around shoes. The second pair I'm lovingly grinding down every time I get a chance for a shorter hike or an off-road jog. If buying the exact same pair of shoes to replace those that have worn down is not a seal of approval, then I don't know what is. Oh, and my wife has a pair also. Yeah. We like them.

The first day I wore a pair of Conspiracies, I actually went for a ten-mile hike. My feet felt great the whole time despite the total lack of break-in period. The shoes manage to provide decent ventilation even though they are fully waterproof, an attribute I can confirm, having worn them in the rain and mud. Columbia calls the shoe's Omni-GRIP soles sticky, meaning that they grab onto rocks, roots, and more, creating plenty of friction to help you establish a firm grip on all sorts of ground. The tread pattern is not aggressive, but it is ideal for a moderately maintained trail.

Depending on which color you choose, you can even wear the Conspiracy Titaniums as casual footwear, making them a good choice for use during travel when you're not sure just where the journey might lead. The electric blue shoes are probably best relegated to the trail, though.

One five-star rating on Amazon came with the comment: "It was pouring rain on the 47 [degree] day ... but my feet stayed dry." Another satisfied owner was unambiguous with his sentiments, saying: "These are my favorite shoes now."

A gear tester with Gearjunkie.com wore a pair of Conspiracies for more than a week, and praised their ability to keep his feet "dry while walking through snow and puddles." And a reviewer with Camping Insider uses his pair for long mountain walks and hill running, and noted the "solid sole with a fairly wide base and really good grip."

Pros: Fully waterproof, comfortable from first use, great grip on most surfaces

Cons: Laces occasionally slip loose

Buy the Columbia Conspiracy Titanium OutDry trail running shoes on Amazon for $88.99 - $199.99

The best trail running shoes on a budget

Why you'll love them: A pair of ASICS GEL-Venture 5 trail runners costs less than fifty bucks, but they offer plenty of support and excellent protection against those punishing heel strikes you encounter on downhill stretches.

The Japanese company ASICS gets its name from the Latin phrase Anima Sana In Corpore Sano which essentially means "a strong mind in a strong body." The GEL-Venture 5 trail running shoes can't necessarily do anything to help your mental state (though the great outdoors sure can) but they do a whole lot for those feet despite a low price tag.

These trail runners feature "Rearfoot GEL cushioning" that greatly reduces the severity of the impact your heel experiences even as you pound your way over stone or down steps. As most trail running injuries occur on the downhill portions — both acute and chronic injuries, for the record — shoes that can minimize the stresses caused by downhill running on rough terrain are a smart move.

The tread pattern on these shoes is minimal, though, so they are best used on graded, well-maintained trails or on fields and meadows. These probably aren't the best choice for blazing your own path through the deep woods.

That qualification noted, more than 7,700 reviews are currently logged on Amazon, and the GEL-Venture 5s enjoy a 4.5-star rating overall. One very satisfied customer said he "bought another two pairs of them to replace [his] old pair."

A write-up with Runrepeat.com highlighted the ASICS GEL-Venture 5 trail running shoe's "grip of the outsole" and lack of "discomfort when striking" the ground. A review from Runnerclick.com praised them as "highly durable" and noted their breathability.

Pros: Affordable price point, great heel cushioning, good breathability

Cons: Too narrow for some users, long break-in period for many feet

Buy the ASICS GEL-Venture 5 Trail Running Shoe on Amazon for $43.25 - $109.99

The best trail running shoes for hot weather

Why you'll love them: The New Balance Minimus Trail 10v1 trail runners are lightweight and well-ventilated, keeping your feet cool and dry even during long runs on hot days.

One of the leading complaints people have about trail runners is that they leave the feet hot and sweaty. Warmth and dampness can be annoying and uncomfortable, and can also make feet more prone to blisters and abrasions. Having hot, clammy feet certainly doesn't help with odors. In certain conditions, such as rain, snow, or on muddy trails or paths that traverse streams and marshes, waterproof trail shoes are ideal. When it's hot and muggy out (or if your feet are prone to heavy sweating), it's a good idea to trade in those water-resistant shoes for a pair that lets your feet breathe.

The New Balance 10v1 trail runners have an exterior made largely of mesh that allows heat to radiate away from your foot. The sides and top of the shoe are relatively thin, meaning reduced insulation, and their low-rise leaves much of your foot and ankle exposed to the air.

The soles of the 10v1s are thick enough to absorb hard strikes and to keep your foot protected against bruising even when you step on loose stones or sharp roots, though I do wish the tread pattern was a bit more aggressive. These shoes won't help you kick steps into a snowy hillside, certainly, but no one will be complaining about the odor-reducing antimicrobial treatment each pair gets.

Buyers almost universally love these shoes, with more than two-thirds of the review sporting five stars and the rest mostly four-star ratings. One customer named Jay called them "quite well ventilated," while an owner named Juan called the 10v1 train runners "great all around."

A gear writer with Irunfar.com said the 10v1s "conform to the contours of your feet," while in a YouTube video review, runner Aaron Dye pointed out the Minimus 10v1's excellent flexibility and cushioning.

Pros: Superb breathability, snug foot conformity, lightweight

Cons: Not water-resistant at all, many users will require added inserts

Buy the New Balance Minimus Trail 10v1 shoes on Amazon for around $104.88 - $115.00

george and amal

George and Amal Clooney have been the subject of infatuation since they met in late 2013. In the last few years the actor and the human rights lawyer have stunned on the red carpet, advocated for important causes, and become parents in the public eye.

Here's a look back at everything you may have missed from the Clooneys' epic romance.

September 2013: They met — and she met his parents.

The pair met at a dinner party in 2013 that was hosted by mutual friends. George's parents Nick and Nina were actually the first ones to meet Amal, and Nick said he knew from their first meeting that George and Amal would be together.

"Nina and I were actually the ones who answered the door when Amal came in," he told People. "She introduced herself to us and we talked. She was obviously very charming, gorgeous and so clearly accomplished, but by the time we had supper that night, it was clear there was a kindness to her and an inclusiveness."

"I really think by the time that first [meeting] was over, his and her fates were sealed, both of them," he said. "She was so remarkable and he was so remarkable around her."

"It was just different than all the other relationships I had seen him in, and I had watched them all from the time he was 13," he continued.

October 2013: They were first spotted getting dinner.

They were first seen getting dinner together in London, but Clooney and his rep denied that they were an item — or that he was dating the two other women he'd been romantically linked to that week — Katie Holmes and Croatian model Monika Jakisic.

“George wants this Monika crap to stop. He wants Katie to get a break, and he wants Amal to be able to prosecute cases without being hassled because she had one dinner with George and four others I even asked George if these [rumors] were true and he said he never comments on his private life, but in the interest of stopping the harassment of all three of these women, he felt he should," his rep told People magazine.

“Three different stories in three weeks. I should be an athlete. But, no of course, it’s all made up,” Clooney told them at the time.

March 2014: They traveled the world together.

Despite his denial that they were dating, George and Amal took trips around the world together. They went to the Seychelles and then went to  Tanzania for a safari trip

Here's how brands are responding to Trump's criticism of the NFL anthem protests

Dozens of brands have been caught in the middle of controversy as President Trump has taken to Twitter to condemn NFL players' protests during the national anthem.

The anthem protests, started by Colin Kaepernick last year, were meant to protest police brutality against black Americans.

Now, after President Trump derided players who have knee led during the anthem, the issue has blown up into a dangerous firestorm for brands trying to avoid controversy.

There are 35 brands sponsoring the NFL this year. Of those, a few have put out statements.

Most of the statements seem to neither support Trump's criticisms nor the players who have protested during the national anthem, though a few go far enough to defend players.

Under Armour

Under Armour, no stranger to Trump-related controversy, was quick to put out a statement Saturday.

"[Under Armour] stands for the flag and by our Athletes [sic] for free speech, expression and a unified America," the brand tweeted.

Nike

Rival Nike's statement was more definitive: "Nike supports athletes and their right to freedom of expression on issues that are of great importance to our society."

Ford

Carmakers have also weighed in. Fordtold Bloomberg that the company does "respect individuals' rights to express their views, even if they are not ones we share. That's part of what makes America great."

Here's how much money you actually take home from a $75,000 salary depending on where you live

$
0
0

What you see isn't always what you get — especially when it comes to salary.

According to a 2010 study from Princeton University, Americans' happiness number — the income threshold at which their day-to-day happiness is no longer enhanced by earning more money — is $75,000.

That's a reasonable number. In fact, it's nearly 30% more than the national median income. But depending on where you live, a $75,000 salary can look very different when it hits your bank account, after federal, state, and local governments have taken their share.

We used SmartAsset's paycheck calculator to find out what $75,000 looks like after paying taxes in 11 popular US cities. The chart below shows annual take-home pay in each city.

What 75k looks like after taxes

Some states, like Washington, Florida, and Texas, don't have state income taxes, so a $75,000 earner will bring home a bigger paycheck there than someone in California or New York.

Still, these totals only account for state and local income taxes, which vary by place, plus federal income taxes and Social Security and Medicare (known as FICA), which amount to $778 per pay period no matter where in the US you live.

If you're contributing to a tax-advantaged retirement account, like a 401(k), the paycheck you bring home will be less than these figures.

But in that case, your savings are covered — or at least part of the recommended 20% of your paycheck you should earmark for savings and paying off debt — and the rest of your paycheck can go toward necessities like housing, food, transportation, and discretionary spending.

The same goes for health insurance, if you're enrolled in a healthcare program through your employer, which will deduct monthly insurance payments from your paycheck on a pre-tax basis.

New York City residents fare the worst in our city comparison. Earners there take home just under $50,000 on a $75,000 salary, largely thanks to steep state income taxes and city taxes. That doesn't leave much to cover housing or transportation costs in the most expensive city in the country.

Below, check out the semi-monthly paycheck breakdown for workers earning $75,000 in 11 US cities.

Here's what 14 celebrities looked like in college

A lot of celebrities lived normal lives before becoming famous, which means a lot of them attended college.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was a college football player before becoming one of Hollywood's most successful actors. Conan O'Brien was president of his university's satirical newspaper.

Others attended college even after they were already well-known, like Jodie Foster and Jake Gyllenhaal.

And a good number finished their degrees later in life, like Shaquille O'Neal and Steven Spielberg.

Looking at their old photos shows how astoundingly normal they can be. Here are what 14 celebrities looked like in college.

Before Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was an actor, he was a wrestler. Before that, he was a college football player.

The Rock played the defensive end for the University of Miami Hurricanes. He graduated in 1995.

For her graduate school graduation, Lupita Nyong'o wore a rubber nose.

The "12 Years a Slave" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" actress attended Hampshire College as an undergraduate before going on to the Yale School of Drama. At Yale graduation ceremonies, newly minted graduates dress up corresponding to their school.

Bill Gates got arrested shortly after leaving Harvard.

The Microsoft founder famously attended Harvard University for just two years before dropping out. Shortly after that, he found himself arrested after a traffic violation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The details of the situation have been lost over time.

7 ways to make your next flight less stressful

$

Passengers board their flight at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, November 23, 2015. REUTERS/Lucas Jackson

I'm on record saying that air travel is an awful experience for the most part and has been for my entire life. I came to this conclusion long before United Airlines' had a dismaying experience with a passenger who was dragged off a plane by police, sustaining injuries in the process.

I also came to this conclusion long before that event was followed by a parade of horribles throughout the industry, reported by smartphone and on social media.

As negative as I can be about the miseries of flight, over the years I've come up with some hacks that make it bearable. I put some of these to work on recent flights to Europe and Utah, in fact.

Here are my top seven:

SEE ALSO: I've been flying for 40 years — and it's always been a terrible experience

FOLLOW US: on Facebook for more car and transportation content!

1. Make a day of it.

Modern air travel is so much faster relative to what most people used to endure — long train, boat, or car rides — that we've come to believe that we'll be whisked from point A to point B with no deleterious effects.

This is foolish. Just because your flight is two hours doesn't mean that's all the time you'll be committing to the journey. You could get stuck in traffic on the way to the airport. You could be delayed at check-in or security. The flight itself could leave late. You could get bumped! You could miss a connection. And on and on.

Add to that the stress you'll endure if you fly coach, with a cramped seat, and you're confronting an ordeal.

My practice is to write off the travel day. Even if my flight is just a couple of hours, I plan to spend the day on the move and unless there's a business commitment mixed in, I devote myself to the journey.

I get to the airport with hours to spare, have a bite to eat and something to drink, do a bit of reading, board the plane, take my flight, and then I don't rush at the other end. In effect, I impose leisure on something that for most people isn't leisurely.

All bets are off, of course, if I'm flying with my family. But when I'm, solo, I make it all about me. I didn't adhere to this rule on my most recent trip, mainly because the schedule wasn't completely under my control, and as a result I wound up a bit cranky by the end of my return flight.

2. Use the lounges.

Some travelers have airport lounge access thanks to their ticket or relationship with the airline or lounge through a credit card. But if you don't, I think it's worth it to pay for daily access. In fact, I routinely now do this.

I usually spend around $50, and if you figure that I'm already saving a fair amount of money by flying coach and would have to feed myself in any case, I think it evens out and actually can be a money saving expenditure.

Even if it isn't, it's much more relaxing to hang out in the lounge than it is in the terminal or by the gate. I'll often spend a few hours doing this, becoming a sort of temporary citizen of the airport.

3. Stay overnight at an airport hotel.

This often isn't as expensive as you might think. On a recent layover in Lisbon, I decided to spend the night at a nice boutique hotel across the street from the airport, and I spent around $100.

Again, you're taking care of yourself with this move, reducing the stress of getting the airport on time. For early flights, I think this a total no-brainer. You wake up, maybe enjoy a free breakfast, and you either stroll over to the airport or jump on a shuttle.

This works out best if the hotel is in the airport itself. Or nearby. I stuck by this rule in Lisbon this year and in Paris last year and the results were great. I arrived for my flights with plenty of time to spare.

20 overlooked Netflix documentaries that you need to watch

the pearl button

Last month, IndieWire listed the 50 overlooked indie movies you must stream on Netflix. One thing that became clear while curating that list was how Netflix has become the streaming destination for the best of the documentary genre.

From documentaries that blur the line between reality and fiction to crowd-pleasing character studies, there’s so many options for documentaries on Netflix it can be hard to pick which title to stream.

Major docs like “The Look of Silence,” “Man on Wire,” and “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” are obvious picks, but so are the following 20 titles, all of which deserve more eyeballs.

"All These Sleepless Nights" (2016)

"All These Sleepless Nights” is a mesmerizing, free-floating odyssey that winds its way through a hazy year in the molten lives of two Polish twentysomethings. It’s an unclassifiable wonder that obscures the divide between fiction and documentary until the distinction is ultimately irrelevant. IndieWire recently named it one of the best documentaries of the 21st century.

"The Armor of Light" (2015)

"The Armor of Light” follows Reverend Rob Schenck, an anti-abortion Evangelical minister who speaks out against gun violence in America, specifically targeting the enthusiasm that the Christian community has for gun culture. By taking the thoughtful character study approach, director Abigail Disney searches for common ground among opposing views while shining a light on the relationship between religion and the NRA.

"Best of Enemies" (2015)

Morgan Neville teams with Robert Gordon for this exciting look at the televised debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley in 1968. While the film digs beneath the political climate of the Democratic and Republican national conventions, the directors ultimately triumph by exploring how the debates turned broadcast television into a powerhouse tool for public discourse.

Guardians Disney

This year at the movies has been a roller-coaster ride when it comes to the box office.

It was on a high at the beginning of the year, with surprise performers like “Get Out” and “Logan” holding court until Disney’s live-action remake “Beauty and the Beast” flexed its muscles.

Then the summer came and was pretty disappointing (especially in August), though there were some standouts like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and “Wonder Woman.”

Now it's riding another high with the surprise September success of “It.”

It’s looking more and more like when 2017 comes to a close, the box office will match up to last year’s total gross and tickets sold (maybe even surpass it if “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” does beyond the monster business it's supposed to do).

Trump's tax plan is here — here's how Wall Street says to trade it

$

Donald Trump Steven Mnuchin

Corporations aren't the only ones set to profit from the Republican tax plan released on Wednesday.

You can too — if you know where to look.

Just focus on the so-called Trump trade, which involves betting on the areas of the market poised to benefit most from the pro-business policy overhaul being touted by President Donald Trump.

Investors have already started piling back into the trade after a long hiatus, as they start to hope for real progress on the policy front.

But don't worry; you haven't missed much yet. There's still a great deal of upside potential to be realized, especially since these same Trump-linked strategies retraced all of their postelection gains — and then some — as investors lost confidence in the president's proposed policies.

Here's a quick primer on what matters to investors:

  • The key measure investors are focusing on involves a lowering of the corporate tax rate to 20% from 35%. Trump has pushed for 15% in the past, but that's being increasingly viewed as unviable.
  • The repatriation tax holiday for companies holding trillions of dollars overseas. They'll be allowed to bring that cash back to the US at a lower-than-usual rate. It could spur investment in the US, but it's also very likely to wind up being used to pay dividends and buy back shares.
  • Another element that investors could trade on is the ability to immediately expense capital expenditures.

The two most straightforward Trump trades involve buying stock in two types of companies:

  1. Those that pay the most taxes and
  2. Those that hold the most cash overseas.

Lucky for you, both Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have baskets tracking both groups.

For more detail, here's a breakdown of how those two firms, plus two other Wall Street titans, recommend investors play tax reform:

Goldman Sachs, part 1

Overview: The chart above shows a Goldman-curated basket of 50 companies that pay high taxes, spread across a variety of US industries.

After a postelection surge, the index saw all of its gains relative to the broader market erased by mid-March. Now, amid rising optimism around some sort of tax cut, it's been ticking up in recent weeks.

Top recommendation: Figure out which companies pay the most taxes, then buy their stocks and don't look back.

Goldman Sachs, part 2

Overview: The second big component of the tax plan, a repatriation tax holiday, will incentivize multinational companies — which make a large portion of their earnings overseas — to bring cash held internationally back into the US.

The chart above shows another Goldman index containing the stocks with the highest earnings reinvested overseas. After losing their postelection gains, they recovered before spiking in recent weeks on increased policy optimism.

The firm estimates that a lowering of the corporate tax rate would result in multinationals repatriating $250 billion of a possible $920 billion untaxed overseas cash in 2018. In terms of the specific sectors that stand to benefit most, Goldman highlights tech and healthcare, which combine for roughly 85% of the total overseas cash for S&P 500 companies.

Top recommendation: Figure out which companies are reinvesting the most earnings overseas, then buy their stocks and don't look back. Large-cap tech and healthcare are a good place to start.

JPMorgan

Overview: While JPMorgan shares Goldman's view that highly taxed companies will benefit from the tax policy, they will also get a boost from the immediate expensing of capital expenditures (capex). That's expected to benefit asset-heavy industries, most notable energy and industrial companies.

To help better understand the effect of the newly-announced 20% corporate tax rate, take a look at JPMorgan's analysis from last week around a cut to 25%. Such a trimming would boost the S&P 500's earnings by $11.40 a share to $143.40. That, in turn, would add more than 150 points to the index, which is fresh off a series of record highs.

And with the stock market serving as a handy signaling device for the likelihood of policies being introduced, JPMorgan also sees areas of the bond market impacted by the repatriation portion of the tax plan.

"Tax reform that repatriates foreign cash and eliminates interest deductibility would greatly reduce US corporate bond supply and should thus on net tighten credit spreads," analysts led by Jan Loeys, the firm's head of global asset allocation, wrote in a recent client note.

Top recommendations:

  1. Buy stocks of companies paying high taxes
  2. In the event of immediate capex expensing, buy stocks of companies in asset-heavy sectors like energy and industrials over those in asset-light sectors
  3. Keep an eye on the potential for tighter credit spreads

Here's a detailed look at the Army's new sidearm — and how it shoots

Army Sig Sauer handgun pistol

It’s the first time the U.S. military has made a major upgrade to personal weapons in over 30 years, and so far, the only way anyone’s gotten an impression of what this new gun can do is to look at press releases and a few pictures from test ranges.

But as the Army is set to field upwards of 500,000 new M17 and M18 Modular Handguns to replace the 1980s-era M9 Beretta pistol, We Are The Mighty got an exclusive look at the impressive new firearm from the folks who designed and built it.

Comparing the M9 to the M17, gone are the external hammer, double action and decocker, and in its place is a slick handgun with a streamlined build based on the most modern technology available in pistol operation and design.

Engineers with M17 maker Sig Sauer likened switching from the M9 to trading in a 1980 Pontiac Bonneville station wagon for a 2015 Honda Accord.

“That old car works just fine, but think of how far car design has come in over 30 years,” one Sig official said. “That’s kind of what’s happening here with the M17. Pistol design has come a long way since the 1980s.”

The new M17 — and its smaller cousin, the M18 — is based on the ground-breaking P320 civilian handgun, which is a lot like a pistol version of a Lego set.

The M17 is built with a removable trigger module that can be inserted into new grips and mated with new barrels and slides to make a whole new handgun based on whatever the mission calls for.

But the main difference most soldiers will notice with the M17 is the change from a double action to a striker fired operation. What that means is an end to that heavy first-shot trigger pull with much lighter follow-up pulls. With the M17, every tug of the trigger is the same — and that makes for easier training and better familiarity with the handgun during yearly qualifications, Sig officials say.

“Soldiers will have a consistent trigger pull every time they shoot the M17,” said Sig Sauer pistol product manager Phil Strader.

Also, the M17 does away with the need for a decocker, so soldiers won’t have to be taught how to drop the hammer before holstering the weapon. Now, once you’re done shooting, you simply engage the external safety and put the gun on your belt.

Shooting the M17 is a no brainer. The design of the grip encourages a natural aim and the 4.7-inch barrel provides good balance between accuracy and compactness. During quick draw-and-shoot drills engaging steel targets at 10 meters, the M17 hit the target every time, even in this amateur’s hands and without taking the time to line up the sights.

For those not used to an external safety on a striker-fired handgun, switching from safe to fire and back again takes a bit of getting used to, and lining up your grip hand thumb so that it doesn’t engage the slide released takes a few mags to drill into muscle memory.

But other than that, the M17 and M18 are pretty much as easy as any modern pistol to figure out.

Trump's tax plan could bring $250 billion into the US — here are the companies set to benefit most

fake money Donald Trump dollar bill

President Donald Trump's new tax plan could cause a tidal wave of internationally-held cash to flood back into the US.

The repatriation tax holiday outlined in today's release is designed to incentivize US-based companies that do big business overseas to bring those profits back home.

By Goldman Sachs' calculation, S&P 500 companies currently hold $920 billion of untaxed overseas cash, and the firm estimates that $250 billion of that will be repatriated. Looking at all US-based companies, Citigroup says there's a whopping $2.5 trillion of capital stashed internationally.

Once that money is brought back to the US, companies have a few options for how to use it. The first is reinvestment back into core businesses. This is likely the avenue policymakers would prefer, as it holds the most direct bearing on economic expansion.

Another option would be for companies to repurchase their own shares. This would be beneficial to stock prices and, by extension, the market as a whole. Buybacks are a good way to achieve immediate share appreciation and signal to investors that a stock is viewed as undervalued.

And regardless of how the cash is used, a tax break for multinational companies at least partially addresses what a recent World Economic Forum survey identified as the most problematic factor for doing business: tax rates.

So with that established, which companies stand to benefit most? Goldman says it's those companies holdings the most post-tax cash overseas, relative to their market cap — a group heavily concentrated in the tech and healthcare sectors.

The firm has put together a handy list of the stocks that fit the bill. Here are the ones they've identified as the top 14 beneficiaries:

14. General Electric

Ticker: GE

Sector: Industrials

Total return year-to-date: -19%

Overseas cash: $35 billion

Overseas cash as % of market cap: 14%

13. Foot Locker

Located 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 1,000 miles northwest of Anchorage, the remote Alaskan village of Kivalina is literally melting under the weight of climate change.

The barrier island has been disappearing under water over the last decade, as the warming ocean causes sea levels to rise and powerful storm surges to eat away at the beach. The US Army Corps of Engineers has said Kivalina will no longer be habitable within 10 years.

The future for residents is uncertain. President Barack Obama recommended a budget of $400 million to relocate Alaskan villages like Kivalina in 2016, but Congress has not approved it.

These photos from the Associated Press and photographers Corey Arnold, Zoë White, and Vlad Sokhin, who shared their beautiful images to Instagram, offer a glimpse of life in Kivalina.

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

air fryer 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • The best air fryers can fry, grill, roast, and bake an array of foods in a short time. They are also durable, have an intuitive user interface, and a large capacity. The SimpleTaste 1400W Multi-function Electric Air Fryer is the best air fryer you can buy because it has all of these features along with a slick digital display.

According to Kitchen Weapon, Philips was the first to introduce the air fryer in 2010. Since then, dozens of brands have entered the market with their own version of this innovative appliance.

Air fryers work using the Maillard reaction. In case you aren’t well-versed in early 20th-century chemistry, the Maillard reaction is a chemical reaction between reducing sugars and amino acids that give a distinctive flavor to browned foods. With traditional fryers, this is achieved by submerging the food in hot oil. On the other hand, air fryers achieve the same reaction by using a mechanical fan to circulate hot air at high speeds around the food. The result is fried foods that use up to 80% less oil. In fact, most recipes just call for a few squirts of spray oil.

When shopping for an air fryer, there are a few features that differentiate them. Digital display air fryers are generally more expensive, but they are a must for precise cooking. Many models come with dishwasher-safe components that make cleanup simple. Also, pay special attention to the warranty information on the appliance you are considering, because many brands have had issues with the cooking drawer busting.

Our guide to the top air fryers is based on thorough research into the ratings and experiences of countless experts and users. Based on our analysis, the following models meet the highest standards of reliability, functionality, and value.

Although the SimpleTaste 1400W Multi-function Electric Air Fryer is our top pick overall, the following slides present strong arguments for considering the Simple Chef Air Fryer, the Secura Air Fryer, the Air Fryer by Cozyna, and the Stove & Brick Air Fryer.

The 1400W SimpleTaste Air Fryer has options for people who like control and for those who like everything to be automated. The temperature and timer can also be adjusted manually with a maximum temp of 400 degrees. Aside from frying, the SimpleTaste air fryer has baking, grilling, and roasting functions. And, it can fit up to 3.2 quarts of food into its basket.

This unit does not have any dishwasher safe components, but the cooking shelf and basket are simple to wash with dish soap, a non-abrasive sponge, and hot water.

BestReviews took the SimpleTaste 1400W Air Fryer for a test drive and ultimately named it the best air fryer overall. The reviewers say that you will not find another model that produces better results or provides better features or quality. The healthy living site Happy Happy Vegan also declared this unit its top pick for air fryers. On Amazon, 92% of the people who reviewed the SimpleTaste air fryer gave it five stars. Buyers like how well it cooks sausages, chicken, fries, and more. The best air fryer on a budget

Why you'll love it: If you are interested in checking out the air fryer craze, the Simple Chef Air Fryer is an affordable, well-crafted option for beginners.

The Simple Chef Air Fryer lives up to its name: it’s simple. There are no fancy pre-set functions, no LCD displays, and you can’t watch your food cook through a transparent lid. There are only four markings on the temperature dial ranging from 175 degrees to 400 degrees. But, what this model lacks in flashy features, it makes up for with consistent, reliable performance. This Simple Chef model is made with 100% BPA-free plastic, and it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

YourOwnHomeTips included the Simple Chef Air Fryer in its list of the top five air fryers. It got high marks because of its affordability, effortless use, and sturdy construction. This model got a 9 out of 10 from AirFryerReviews due to its dishwasher safe elements, large capacity, and safety protections. However, it did lose points because there are no pre-set options, and the lid is not transparent.

Of the buyers who reviewed the Simple Chef Air Fryer on Amazon, 93% gave it at least four stars. Reviewers noted that they’ve had great success making chicken wings, fried chicken, fries from scratch, baked vegetables, pot pie, and more. Since air fryers are relatively new, most of the buyers did not have an older model to compare this one to. The comments mainly focused on how much easier this new appliance makes cooking. However, one verified purchaser had experience with three other brands previously and still rated this one the best.

Pros: Built to last, dishwasher safe, large capacity

Cons: Hard to precisely gauge temperatures, lacks a transparent lid

Buy the Simple Chef Air Fryer - Air Fryer For Healthy Oil Free Cooking - 3.5 Liter Capacity on Amazon for $67.99

The best air fryer for large meals

Why you'll love it: The Secura Air Fryer is cost-effective, has a large frying capacity, and does an excellent job of cooking evenly.

Aside from the 4-liter/4.2-quart cooking capacity, the Secura Air Fryer is a fairly basic device. There are two dials for setting the temperature (up to 390 degrees) and time (up to 60 minutes). There are also heating and power indicator lights. The unit comes with a nonstick fryer basket, toaster rack, and skewer.

As with most gadgets, when there is a lack of features, such as digital settings, there are fewer parts that could potentially break down. Secura stands by the quality of this device with a two-year limited warranty.

Corrie Cooks reviewed the Secura XL air fryer and gave it high marks for its durability, size, and functionality. However, the reviewer disliked that it didn’t have an LCD display and thought the 4-liter size didn’t warrant an “XL” distinction. BestSmokerz.com included the Secura XL on its list of the top ten air fryers because of the heavy-duty construction and large capacity. But, this unit lost points because the dial makes it hard to precisely set the timer.

Around 93% of the reviews of the Secura Air Fryer on Amazon are positive. Reviewers were impressed with how this model is able to cook healthier French fries, reheat leftover fries to their original glory, make small pizzas, roast turkey breasts, toast bread, and more. One buyer pointed out that it can do everything an oven can do, but it’s easier and faster. One buyer mentioned they did have trouble making onion rings from scratch.

Pros: Two-year warranty, durable, easy to use, relatively affordable

Cons: Relies on dials instead of digital settings

One of New York's most influential chefs just opened a new restaurant for his delivery app — and it's a major fast-casual upgrade

Ando 14

David Chang's culinary empire continues to expand.

The influential chef of Momofuku fame launched Ando as a delivery-only concept in New York City in 2016, which received cautiously optimistic, if not tepid, reviews.

Previously, Ando existed only in the virtual world — all orders were placed through the restaurant's app, and the food was delivered via UberRush.

But now Ando has a foothold in fast-casual reality with an honest-to-goodness brick-and-mortar establishment.

Business Insider reviewed an early iteration of the delivery service's menu before, so we decided to head down to experience Ando in person.

SEE ALSO: We visited one of the fastest-growing chicken chains that's taking over America — here's what it's like

ALSO READ: We tried McDonald's, Wendy's, and Burger King's signature burgers — and the winner is unmistakable

Ando's storefront is on 14th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue, just a few blocks from our offices.

The interior is cavernous — a counter and stools line the window wall, and a simple counter with several registers await.

The menu is varied enough to give options without being overwhelming; there's even a new breakfast menu that's excluded from the app during the week. The prices are within a reasonable range — at least for an NYC lunch.
